Round twenty one selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

The Bulldogs are still trying hard, and were rewarded for effort last start with a win over a disappointing Tigers outfit, but there's two reasons why they can't beat the Broncos on Thursday:

  1. The Bulldogs haven't beaten a top eight team all season unless you count the Panthers way back in round three  :-)
  2. With the Bulldogs winning last start, the Broncos won't take them lightly.

In round nine the Bulldogs nearly beat the Broncos (and were unlucky not to), but the Broncos have improved since then while the Dogs have been shedding players and treading water.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result – Bulldogs 36 defeated Broncos 22

Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

Both sides lost last start to lowly opponents and both sides were ordinary at best (and I'm being polite). The Knights are tough to beat at home but the Tigers still have the sniff of a top eight finish in their nostrils – that should be all the motivation they need. A repeat of their performance against the Dogs and the Tigers season is over, but they're better than that...I hope they're better than that. With apologies to all the Tigers fans on the site – if you're only going to miss one game this weekend make sure it's this one.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result – Tigers 25 defeated Knights 16

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Melbourne Storm – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

First plays second and quite a few are talking up this contest in the lead-up...and why not? Here's my reason why not – the Bunnies record against the Storm is truly awful (4 wins from 28), and the last time these sides met was in the lead-up to the 2017 finals series. Back then the Storm won 64-6. We'll have nothing like that on Friday night, because the Bunnies are a serious football team this season, but the history of these sides tells a story and it's telling me to stick with the purple machine. It's a formula that's worked for a very long time.

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Rabbitohs 30 defeated Storm 20

St George Illawarra Dragons vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – WIN Stadium

I think this is the toughest game to pick all round. Both sides were convincingly outplayed last Sunday and both have their place in the finals (Dragons – top four and Warriors – top eight) to defend. It's fair to say the Dragons loss to the Roosters looks like stronger form than a loss to the Titans, but the Warriors (potentially) have some very important inclusions this weekend. Adam Blair will be back and Tohu Harris and Issac Luke are likely to be back. If all three return I'm leaning the Warriors way. The Warriors playmakers are a much more dangerous pair playing behind Issac Luke, and the Warriors did beat the Dragons earlier this season when few thought they could. I'm just leaning to the home team, who have a fair run into the finals and still look on track for a top four finish. The Rabbitohs/Storm contest will get plenty of headlines, but this game should create plenty of interest.

Verdict – Dragons by 2

Result – Warriors 18 defeated Dragons 12

Parramatta Eels vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

The Eels are pretty crap, but at least they're playing at home which is the only place they've won a game all year. Perhaps that's why they are favoured to win on Saturday. The Titans are almost always expected to lose, but in their last six games they've won four and scored 30 points or more every time (and two of those were against top eight teams). Their two losses were a narrow (and dodgy) loss to the Chooks and a game they had in the bag but let slip against the Knights. The Eels by comparison have scored more than 20 points just three times all year. They've only done it once since round 8...and they lost. Not for me.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result – Eels 28 defeated Titans 12

Sydney Roosters vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Allianz Stadium

Last week I put my comically over-sized head on the chopping block and suggested the competition was a two-horse race...and now look at the all experts jumping on the Thinker bandwagon and tipping the Storm and the Roosters for the 2018 grand final. Get in line gurus....the Thinker is in town. The Cowboys are in Sydney this weekend and I don't know if they want to be. They jagged a rare win at home last weekend which was a nice little lift for the local fans who have suffered this season, but if that game wasn't the lowest quality contest in round 20 it was sitting right next door to it. Meanwhile the Chooks put the Dragons to the sword. They're winning, they're on track and they're a serious football team. Since Roosters coach Trent Robinson took hold of the clipboard in 2013 his troops have finished the NRL season in the following positions – 2013 (1st), 2014 (1st), 2015 (1st), 2016 (15th), 2017 (2nd). There's only one Craig Bellamy, but he's no slouch.

Verdict – Roosters by 20

Result – Roosters 26 defeated Cowboys 20

Cronulla Sharks vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

The Sharks are in 6th and the Sea Eagles in 14th place, yet Manly have actually scored more points than Cronulla this year. That tells you a few things – Cronulla must be pretty good at winning tight games and when Manly lose they really really lose. Manly were pretty good for much of their game against the Panthers, and then they really really lost while the Thinker boiled an egg. Cronulla lost narrowly to the Broncos but that was a quality contest and they'll be winning this.

Verdict – Sharks by 14

Result – Sea Eagles 33 defeated Sharks 32

Penrith Panthers vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Panthers Stadium

If some challenging officialdom didn't kill the Raiders two weeks ago the Storm certainly did one week ago. A shame really, because when the Raiders are winning, the NRL is a much more entertaining competition. They could actually win this, because Penrith are a baffling riddle. If they start slowly this weekend Canberra are the sort of team that could score a point a minute, and you can't run down a 40 point deficit in the last seven minutes of play. Reagan Campbell-Gillard should be back this week and he's a massive inclusion for the home side. You can't tip the Panthers confidently, but I can't tip against them either.

Verdict – Panthers by 4

Result – Panthers 40 defeated Raiders 31

Morning Mark - tell me about it mate.
This would be the most "upsetting" round, this season.
Results going bottom up for me also. 1 from 6.
I doubt Big Pete can mount a challenge on the top guns now.
I came second to Scott M last year, but I never lie down, only to go to sleep.
Cheers mate - Big Pete

big pete If your on 1 / 6 then I suppose being on 2 / 6 I shouldn't really complain , it's still a horror week for tipping & manly is currently ahead of sharks in score & I tipped sharks yikes ...

christine 's picture

I spoke too soon 2 / 7 with one to go ...

Mary S's picture

BigPete & other Manly supporters - your team certainly pulled out all the stops this week for a nail-biting finish!! Great work!!

christine 's picture

I just read an article from todd Greenberg of what they intend to do to help farmers with the drought & all I can say is shame on you todd Greenberg shame on you $100.00 for every point scored during the finals is going to do nothing for the farmers & Penrith gave two hundred thousand which is more than todd Greenberg & the nrl are trying to urge farmers to come to a game but they won't make it any cheaper for them to do so , that's disgusting they should be ashamed of themselves ...

christine 's picture

I just read another article that states the nrl will give farmers free tickets but that's still not good enough the nrl make so much money & that's all they come up with , no they have lost my support except for this website farmers are the back bone of this land & they need our support ...

Steel Panther's picture

I was at Allianz last night Mary & I thought your Cowboys were unlucky. One of their best efforts in what's been a disappointing season. Friday night I was lucky to go to ANZ to see the Rabbits v Storm game. Loved the atmosphere at both venues.

Looks like we are all in the same boat with our tips this weekend with so many upsets. Raiders up 26-12 at halftime. Another head scratching effort frm Brisbane & the Warriors for opposite reasons. Last win in Woolongong for the Warriors was in 1996!!

Thanks again Pabdul & Big Pete for your earlier help re attending the venues. I have to say the weather in Sydney has been stunning. Back home to Auckland tomorrow!!

christine 's picture

Thinker sorry for mentioning that on your website but the nrl is just greedy & they need to support this country ...

Mary S's picture

So pleased your enjoyed your visit Steel Panther, and the games you attended.

Like the Broncos match - just not enough time at the end for Cowboys to make it against a very determined opposition.

a's picture

136 points scored between 2 games that's 20 more points between 3 games yesterday

mark ashford's picture

This won't be popular but I thought both the Cowboys and the Raiders were robbed by ref decisions. Didn't tip either team but they were both hard done by.
Sunday Footy Show says Matt Cecchin is quitting the game after several death threats on social media. Brad Fittler said the most intelligent thing I've ever heard from him "just turn it off, don't look, you don't need it" Brad you are so right.

The Thinker's picture

I just updated the NRL ladder - the only change from last weekend was 1st and 2nd swapped places.

christine 's picture

Now I can at least say I finished on 3 / 8 what a shocking week ...

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Mary and Christine - re Manly, I tipped against them for the 2nd time this season. They've been that hot and cold, that I felt Sharks would beat them by 4 at Shark Park. Looks like travelling over the Sydney Hbr Bridge, does have its advantages - sometimes.
Cheers and have a good week - Big Pete

Greetings football fans

I have updated the tipping comp after a difficult round. Just one of us did better than 50%, so a special congrats to The Voyeur who picked 5 from 8.

All of a sudden Tiger Girl has taken a two point lead in the tipping comp, with a pack of about 8 or 9 close behind. Still plenty of contenders up for prize money this season.

I will have the round 22 page published tonight for those that need to tip early, and I will publish my previews and tips on Tuesday.

All the best

Christine - Thinker is human enough, for you need not saying sorry.
Many people and big capital city types don't "cotton-on" to the fact, like Lynn McGranger (Irene) from Home Away said this week on Sunrise weather reporting - "Remember food doesn't come from supermarkets!!!!"

To grow fruit, vegies, crops etc and to graze sheep/cattle etc. you need water for growth of trees, plants, crops, fodder.
Some rivers and creeks are all dry in NSW and out of town here.

Keep well all and pray, even if you've never prayed - apart from footy.

Good evenin Steely - glad the weather held together for you.
Excuse my French, but a shit of a round this one. Thanks heavens many of us aren't punters, because we'd have the bum burnt out of our duds.

No probs mate and I speak for Brother Pabdul as well.
Round, round get around, we got around.....hummin mate.
Been a little fresh and icy up this way, but sun has been shining, but we need rain.

Enjoy a couple of nice NSW beers, before you depart. One day we will catch up and meet, to share one or two.

EPL starts again, for a new season next week. Community Shield tomorrow.

Cheers - Big Pete

Baggy_Gee's picture

I suppose that's it's just coincidence that it's a Beach Boys song your humming there Pete. Stunned by your boys win but it puts paid to the thought that its game over for the season.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes B G - The B/Boys might just rain some rain on us, which coincidentally we are getting very light showers here at present, as from around 6am this morning.
Well that was one golden point decider, we didn't lose. Its been game over for us, for several weeks/months now. Maybe S/Eagles will go back to back at Lottoland/Brooky next week.
Cheers mate and have a good week - Big Pete

Thanks Christine, certainly started promising but definitely went down hill after that first game :P

Big pete
Apart from needing water for our farmers on the land for there stock we also need bees without bees we wouldn't survive we would run out of food so everyone needs to put plants in there gardens that are bee friendly not all plants attract bees ...

After the round had started I looked at tiger girls tips & it said there are no tips available , if I have noticed i'm sure others have too ...

Penrith have sacked griffin this afternoon just 4 weeks out from the start of finals ...

mark ashford's picture

Big Pete, I'm surprised it has taken this long for our State & Federal governments to recognize this drought problem. No doubt there have been things going on but we just don't hear about it.
Love him or hate him Alan Jones has been very vocal about this, quoting the billions we give in overseas aid but f--k all to our farmers.
I have no love for the Greens who oppose dams, clearing of land, and any development that would support our farmers. Surely the people on the land in many cases for generations have a better idea than those clueless Tasmania based fools who just want to save a frog or two.
Can you imagine what we'll be paying for a lamb chop and a vegie or two if this continues.

mark ashford's picture

Sorry back to the footy.
Christine your news on Anthony Griffith is correct.
Can't ever remember a coach being sacked 4 weeks out when the team is sitting on equal 4th. Who made this decision? was it Gould?
Watched Gould on the Sunday Footy Show and he said nothing.
His eyes amaze me, they are just tight slits surrounded by bulbous flesh.
Reminds me of a toad I saw in a cartoon somewhere.

mark ashford's picture

Despite the Panthers having a win, somewhere Coachy is still licking his wounds. It's time for you, Coach, to do the Icarus thing and rise up.
Only 4 rounds left, time for a comment or two

christine 's picture

Mark
Yes I believe it was Gould who has been playing it down for weeks with all the media speculation & uncertainty in the club with the player revolt that was going on what club has consecutive wins that are in the top 8 that sack there coach this close to finals there has to be more too it than that ...
