Finals week one

Sydney Roosters vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Sydney Cricket Ground

This is the third meeting between our foundation clubs in 2019, which is unusual. It's also unusual that the Roosters haven't beaten the Bunnies this season, because they usually beat them at least once. The last meeting was only a few days ago, so it's a handy enough guide, although the Bunnies had more to play for and there's been some roster changes for this match. The Chooks welcome back Keary, Taukeiaho, Aubusson and Morris. The Bunnies have two Burgess brothers returning (Tom and George) but Sam is out suspended. James Roberts also returns from suspension and will slot in to replace the injured Gagai. Cameron Murray could be the form player of the NRL right now, and he's become part of a very dynamic attacking combination with Cook, Walker and Reynolds. If the Bunnies win they are the four that get them there, but I'm with the Chooks who are bringing back plenty of big match players and what looks like a slight edge in the forwards.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Roosters 30 defeated Rabbitohs 6

Melbourne Storm vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – AAMI Park

While a loss doesn't mean the season is over for either side, you cannot underestimate the importance of winning a game like this – particularly for the Storm who can potentially make a grand final without having to leave Melbourne. Croft misses out for the returning Munster, who spent the week off retrieving his shoulder which was found several kilometres away from the point of impact. Neither side was super impressive last weekend against lesser opponents but at least the Storm won. That said, the Raiders bring back a whole bunch of proper first graders this weekend in Nicoll-Klokstad, Soliola, Bateman, Rapana and Leilua. The Green Machine will be heading to Melbourne free of fear, after running the Storm down in Melbourne earlier this season. I think they can do it again.

Verdict – Raiders by 2

Result – Raiders 12 defeated Storm 10

Manly Sea Eagles vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – Lottoland (probably)

In the 1993 film Jurassic Park, a team of genetic scientists create a wildlife park of dinosaurs on the island of Isla Nublar. Des Hasler, not afraid to think outside the box, has jetted over and brought back the T-Rex in his over-sized baggage. It's unusual, and potentially just a complete distraction, but Des has always been one to play his own tune. Speaking of dinosaurs, we're likely to have a current Prime Minister (No 1. Sharks fan Morrison) and a former Prime Minister (No. 1 Sea Eagles fan Abbott) in the crowd on Saturday night. Hopefully they don't start throwing asbestos at each other. At full strength the Sea Eagles would be a warm favourite here, but a string of injuries and a likely suspension for Taupau leaves Manly short of proper footballers.

Verdict – Sharks by 14

Result – Sea Eagles 28 defeated Sharks 16

Parramatta Eels vs Brisbane Broncos – Sunday afternoon – Bankwest Stadium

The Broncos have made the eight even though they lost more games than they won this season. Their points differential is 107 points worse than the team in seventh, and 388 points worse than the minor premiers. It doesn't read well, and their efforts in Sydney this season read even worse. They've won just one game in Sydney this season, by 2 points over the Sharks. In every game they lost they were flogged, including last week against the Bulldogs and in round 14 against this opponent at this venue. Yuck!

Verdict – Eels by 8

Result – Eels 58 defeated Broncos 0

Wally Lewis - week one finals selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or Thursday morning

  • ROOSTERS vs Rabbitohs
  • STORM vs Raiders
  • Sea Eagles vs SHARKS
  • EELS vs Broncos

Eugene here. I was more surprised that Storm were ever ‘not’ the most hated. They contain the most hated players past and present.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Manly does have a history that is longer than those space wasters from the far south. Same as the Broncos, it is surprising that even with the biggest grubs of all time that they will be celebrated as a great team and era of the game.

The Voyeur's picture

Yeah I hear you, 3 likely future immortals, multiple players who have improved their football, players who all rave about the culture in the club, probably the best club coach in history.....what a bunch of grubs lol

mark ashford's picture

Oh I do get a laugh on this site occasionally. A fan poll taken no doubt primarily in NSW found the Storm most hated. No doubt because they have beaten most NSW teams this and past years. Take a poll in VIC and it would be Manly, Sharks & Bulldogs. Take a poll in QLD and you'd get Sharks, Roosters & Panthers.
These polls are a joke driven by the media to excite NSW fans.
The answer is simple, just defeat Storm in the GF (if they get there) and you have bragging rights.
Manly was the most "hated" club for years in NSW did that give you "haters" any real joy? I doubt it.
We don't need to hate any NRL club just wish for the best team to win and take our great game forward.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I can not forgive Will chambers for lying down like a little girl to waste time. Highly likely we still couldn't win, but be a man play the game like a man and hold your head high win, lose, or draw.

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Hello everyone, finals footy here we are! How good is it. The only thing is that my Dragons aren't there like we were last year which has decreased my excitement for finals this year a little. Ah well, we haven't seen much finals footy over the last 8 years anyways so I'm used to it. My tips for this week are:

Roosters by 14 - The Roosters welcome back Taukieaho, Aubusson, Keary and B. Morris who are huge inclusions and will help the Roosters' cause considering what happened when they faced the Bunnies last week. By the way, how good is it to know that these two clubs will face each other for a second week in a row! The Rabbits on the other hand welcome back two of the Burgess boys in Tom and George but will be missing Sam along with Gagai and Amone. I think that the Roosters will bounce back after last week's loss. Remember guys, Roosters + SCG = big win for the Roosters. Yes I know they're playing the Rabbitohs in a finals match, but you never know, they can still win another big one here over the Rabbitohs… or maybe not, a close game again will be amazing. We'll see, we'll see.

Storm by 6 - Now this will be a cracking game. Even though they weren't at their best last week, the Storm were still very classy as usual and dangerous. It's scary to think what the Storm can possibly do in this finals series. The Raiders will be welcoming back their rested players from last week with open arms considering that plan backfired on them. But still I have to give credit where it's due. The Raiders have defied the odds this season to make it to the 4 credit Ricky Stuart, the new signings; the Poms, CNK, etc and just the whole squad for lifting their games up to another level to get the Raiders to this position. They've been very tough this season and one of those instances were against the Storm in Melbourne where they came back from 18-0 down to beat the Storm 22-18. Will we see a repeat of that? Well not coming from behind I guess but still will we see the Raiders beat the Storm again? It could happen and I wouldn't be surprised if it happens but the Storm are just too classy and too well-drilled that they will be looking to be at their best and even if the Raiders are at their absolute best, I can't see them beating the Storm if they're at their best themselves. Will be intriguing but it's the purple machine for me.

Sharks by 10 - Manly will be missing a lot of key players; Tommy Turbo is still out, Taupou, and Curtis Sironen will be missing for Manly in this one. I think that with an under-strengthened line-up, they'll be the first to get knocked out here. Great to see that Tony Williams gets to play but he hasn't played an NRL game since round 8 last year and to return on such a big stage, he'll be under a lot of pressure to be able to perform, and he should have a lot of rust and I'm not sure he he'll be mentally for this game considering it's an elimination final. But to think that Manly will have Fonua-Blake and Tony Williams on the same field together is daunting for the Sharks. Speaking of the Sharks, they had a great game against the Tigers last week, you could clearly tell that they wanted it more, especially when they scored 3 tries in 6 minutes early in the second half. They just have to keep up that momentum they have in defence and bring it into this game and they'll be just fine against Manly in my opinion, even with the crowd strongly behind them. Something to point out though, Manly are the bogey team of the Sharks but surely that is thrown out when it comes to finals footy. With that said, it's the Sharks for me who I think will get it done quite comfortably in the end. If this is goodbye for Manly this season, then I have to take this time to credit to Des. The way he has been able to get the Manly players up even with plenty of injuries and distractions has been absolutely unbelievable to see where Manly were last week to where they are now, Manly should be proud win, loss or draw on the season that they've had. Same goes to Cronulla, credit to John Morris, in his first season of coaching to get the Sharks to the finals is an almighty effort from him.

And finally... Eels by 8 - Eels will be playing at their fortress in Bankwest. Expect them to come out and perform really well here for their fans. So, it's massive pressure on the Broncos to be able to match it with Parramatta because they're coming into this coming off a poor performance against the Dogs last week. It's very true that it seemed like the Bulldogs were playing for a finals spot rather than the Broncos. But hey, hopefully for the Broncos' sake, they will be able to turn it around in 1 week but I just feel that Parra will want it more and will be playing the better footy in the process to knock the Broncos out of the finals. Keep in mind though, the Broncos did beat the Eels in extra time just 2 weeks ago up in Brisbane though, the Eels have the momentum now and the Broncos don't coming into this one. So it'll be interesting to see how these teams will go on Sunday afternoon.

Awesome. Good luck to all with your tips for this week and with those who's teams are in the finals, good luck to your teams for this week. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

voyeur I was just saying what the article said at the bottom of the page at the time did I offend a storm fan by saying what the article said I don't need a cup of tea I actually hate watching storm play they are so finely drilled it is always the same no variation at all ... by the way the article is still at the bottom of this screen it was done by fox sport league so argue with them ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Kinda missing the point Christine, Voyeur was saying that even the poll that was conducted was only ever going to point to the results given. And with the amount of negative publicity they have had recently there was only ever one result. Everything that came afternoon was called discussion not a storm in a tea cup. Lively conversation is good for the soul.

Steel Panther's picture

Baggy you're on fire tonight!!

Steel Panther's picture

Voyeur.....where have you been all season? You make some valid points. All the anti-Storm press becomes tiring.

christine's picture

I am not missing the point you are I was pointing out the article down the bottom of the page read it for yourself that is all I said I hate storm that is my business I am not saying you all have too but instead I get attacked by two of you for pointing out an article so I am not allowed to have my opinion I agree with it I hate storm ...

christine's picture

I think you both need to chill not be so quick to jump down someone else's throat they way you both have ...

Mary S's picture

Hi Baggy,
Who have the girls picked for this weekend?
Always have a smile on their reasoning!!
Cheers,
Mary

a's picture

The vouyer you should be here more often

mark ashford's picture

Hatred of any club in our competition is to be laughed at.
Just support your club, hatred is for terrorist's or child molesters or rapists. Get real people and enjoy the game.

Mary S's picture

Agree with you 'a' - great to see your comments Vouyer!

One thing about any poll - they can be manipulated to suit the person's (or newspaper or company's) agenda - just ask any politician, as they do it on a regular basis!!!

Cheers to all & enjoy the games this weekend,
Mary

The Thinker's picture

How good would the competition be if every team in the NRL was as professional as the Storm?

Quirky fact - just 3 tipsters here tipped the Bunnies tonight, even though they beat the Chooks last week.

Given the score at half time...we must be good judges.

mark ashford's picture

THINKER
I totally agree with your comment about how good the Storm is.
Full marks must go to Craig Bellamy & Cameron Smith. A few posters here express hatred for the Storm but I believe envy is the real reason.
As a Broncos supporter, who has been flogged by the Storm this year I can't express hate just wish we were as good as them.

Mary S's picture

The Roosters are having a meal of Rabbit tonight!!

christine's picture

mark I shouldn't say the word hate I should say I get bored watching storm play because bellamy has them so finely drilled it is the same thing week in week out I tend to loose interest when they play now I am not the only person in this house that says that so maybe he is rubbing off on me who knows but I am not critizing your broncos I just read the article at the bottom of the screen & pointed it out so jump on jump the jurno that wrote it not me I just said what they said storm are the most hated team in the nrl that's not a reson to attack me ...

christine's picture

all I did was point out an article that is at the bottom of the screen & I have been verbally attacked by 3 people for it isn't it good we don't all have to have the same opinions enjoy the rest of your year I am done with this no more ...

christine's picture

mark
Go & have your arguments with anonymous or coach or who ever you want but you had no reason to jump down my throat just because the others were ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

You do make a good point mark. Joe Lewis when asked if he hated his opponent said "when I went into the ring against him (Max schmeling) the second time, I wanted to knock him out as a man who was in there to knock me out. But to hate him, that's another matter. I don't hate that easy. Hating is something that comes deep. I never learnt to do that." If a boxer knows the game you should listen as they need those emotions more than anyone else. Maybe we bandy words to easily these days.

christine's picture

I will be out of your way soon enough the season is nearly over but I have a different opinion of you now mark ...

Mary S's picture

Hi Baggy,
I, personally agree with Joe Lewis sentiments, and your final summation of "Maybe we bandy words to easily these days.'

Being intrigued, as I am, by people's individual take on words, and the manner in which they can be strung together, I looked up the meaning of hate and I quote
"hate
verb
feel intense dislike for.
"the boys hate each other"
synonyms: loathe, detest, dislike greatly, abhor, abominate, despise, execrate, feel aversion towards, feel revulsion towards, feel hostile towards, be repelled by, be revolted by, regard with disgust, not be able to bear/stand, be unable to stomach, find intolerable, shudder at, recoil from, shrink from; informal hate someone's guts; rare disrelish
"the boys hate each other"
noun
intense dislike.
"feelings of hate and revenge"
synonyms: loathing, hatred, detestation, dislike, distaste, abhorrence, abomination, execration, resentment, aversion, hostility, ill will, ill feeling, bad feeling; enmity, animosity, antagonism, antipathy, bitterness, animus, revulsion, disgust, contempt, repugnance, odium, rancour; rare disrelish
"feelings of hate and revenge" - end of quote

It really seems to depend on the amount of emotion we feel at the time, as to the importance we place on a word.

Personally, I found it interesting, as I might consider I dislike something or someone, but it doesn't have the same emotional involvement as the more (to me) intense emotion of hate, and yet both are listed as the meaning of 'hate'.

Curious, as to how human beings can react.

Bet there a few supporters of the game tonight that are using some choice words!!

Cheers to all
Mary

christine's picture

all I said mary now you are joining in on this is there is an article at the bottom of the screen that says storm are the most hated team in the nrl go to the homepage of nine msn & it is even on there saying it but if I point it out I get told off by 4 of you for it now am I not entitled to my opinion only yours marks voyeurs & baggy I didn't even mention eels or broncos or cowboys but all of you jump down my throat seriously go & find coach & start an argument with him not me I don't need this crap from any of you ...

christine's picture

enjoy the rest of your season mine is over I am out of here thank thinker for running your website but I am done hope you enjoy your off season & have a safe xmas & new year ...

Mary S's picture

Hi Christine,
I read the article you mentioned in your post earlier this week, and agree with you Christine, on a further comment in regard to journalists. When you look at it, your comment has sparked a great deal of discussion, and none of it has been 'to have a go' at you.
I also found the article of interest, that it only mentioned 4 of the teams taking part in week 1 of the Finals.
If you like, I (personally), see it as an expansion of the topic that you brought to posters attention. For that I congratulate you.

In life, we see a great deal of information thrown our way, but how much is true, and how much is not is often hard to tell as it can be done up in very believable packaging.

I hope you will re-read some of the comments later, as your post, and your opinion is valued.

Cheers,
Mary

I was sorely tempted to not say anything about tonight’s game (it’s still Friday night over here albeit only just) but I might indulge myself and bask in the glory while I can.

How good were my BBB eh? Bada Bing! Bada Boom! I thought they’d win but not by that much. I’m a very happy chappy at the moment. Maybe not so much when everyone’s favourite JWH 😁 gets suspended (maybe) for the “trip” he tried to disguise tonight. Dude, seriously…

Anyways, must dash and get me some booty sleep. Cheers 🐔 🐔 🐔

Yeah. Newbie your boys were so fantastic last night

Baggy_Gee's picture

But if you look at the usage of the word it has been associated with apathid, both Russian and Chinese communist and the ethnic cleansing that has occurred in both countries, Nazism and all the suffering that unfolded, and the lessor reported ethnic cleansing in Africa. So it would appear that the word has travelled beyond its original meaning. Factor in the behaviour of EPL fans, and we can see that this intense dislike is far and away from the innocuous way we have been using it about the Storm, Manly on the other hand......... 😈

The Voyeur's picture

Good discussion Baggy, Mark and Mary.....well played and some really great points on both the Storm and the hate word.......roll our today’s footy !!!!!

It’s how you use the word that matters you can hate a team it’s not a personal attack it’s usually a rivalry
you can hate as many things as you like transportation vegetables political party’s to name a few because there not personal attacks
You can hate someone the way they play the game your not hating them as a person off the field because you don’t know them
The hate can stay on the field that’s the competitive of sport as long as it stays on the field
Like I hate this subject so your right back to the finals

Baggy_Gee's picture

All mark did was express his detestation in all people saying they hate a team or person, and with the subsequent conversation he agreed with the Boss that the comp would be amazing if all the teams were as diligent as the Storm in finding underperforming players and lifting them to their full potential. This is expressing his OPINION and not attacking anyone, and thought out the conversation I, personally, have been challenged to use better wording when talking to and about things. As an online community who have a common passion we are here to use iron to sharpen iron, to talk, discuss and in some cases find an internal fault within ourselves to remedy. I would like to thank everyone who added their point of view and encourage it to continue.

a's picture

Yeah hates a strong word we should save it from criminals and no I don’t hate the Storm either

Mary S's picture

I'm really looking forward to the remaining NRL games this weekend - I wonder if any other teams will 'steamroller' their opposition, like Roosters did to the Rabbitohs last night?

I could just imagine you jumping for joy Newbie!!

I felt that Rabbitohs, as a team, were stunned by the pace the Roosters set in the first half last night. Don't know if anyone else had the same impression?

Cheers to all,
Mary

a's picture

Yep I certainly did to Mary S I agree with everything you said about the Roosters and Rabbitohs

Anonymous's picture

Everyone has teams they don’t like. Let’s all come out of that closet. So rather than quietly sweep it back under the carpet like it never happened, I think it would be better to give the rug a good spring clean and shake it out a bit. Including your own valued opinion, if the thinker page took the same poll amongst yourselves, you could fix all argument. Vote your “top 5” in terms of your most hated. Of course, you can’t be wrong, won’t be judged, and shouldn’t have a grudge held against you as it’s your opinion which is of no one else’s business. By the end of the week, the team with the combined lowest total is the Thinker’s most hated (in a combined average personal opinion and partially anonymous kind of way).

Mine is:
1 Storm
2 Broncos
3 Manly
4 St George/I
5 Bulldogs

As it stands, this is the final standings.

Steel Panther's picture

First time I've checked the site today and I have to admit at being a bit shocked. Where has any one on here jumped down your throat Christine? You alerted everyone to an article about the Storm and from that, some good robust discussion developed something that has been lacking here at times this season. I can't believe how & why you reacted the way you did. Mark & Mary S especially have been two of the most supportive posters on here with regards to your personal life. No one has tried to kick you off the site. You should be joining in the discussion.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Good news Steel, the Warriors women are better than the other Warriors. Maybe there might be some silverware in your cupboard by the end of the NRLW season. Only problem might be Broncos women who put of massive scores last year.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Christine
Hi mate please reread the comments. No one was criticizing you certainly not me. I was simply pointing out what I felt was wrong with the article. You are of course entitled to your opinion, that's what this site is about. With regard to Anonymous, he and I are just having a bit of fun with me trying to guess his identity. Try not to take things personally and just enjoy being here, it's nearly over!

mark ashford's picture

Anonymous
I won't be participating in your "hate-a-thon" questionnaire. Simply put I don't "hate" any of the clubs in our comp so I can't be involved.
I thought the Roosters were amazing last night virtually unstoppable.
I've tipped Storm to win and think they will but I've been wrong many times this season. Now if you want to know the truth I've harboured a strong dislike for Sharks (only because Gallen & Fifita play there) and also Panthers ( I don't like Maloney) Now Maloney & Gallen are out of the game or soon will be I'll have to rethink my position. Apart from that I just love the game of RL as we all should.

Christine 's picture

I not against mark or anyone on this site but we are all different & we all have our own opinions & I personally felt I was being attacked by your comments last night just for having an opinion anyway let's drop it my teams I dislike are storm because the age to fondly drilled & they get away with more thongs than other teams do sharks as the thinker says gallen is grub & they should have kept feki ,bulldogs because of there fan base they are the most uncivilised team I'm the Nrl# if I had to choose a anpther team I would probably say warriors because they are so inconsistent but then so is penrith but that is only my opinion & I would rate bulldogs first out of all of those teams bulldogs for me is the worst in the nrl & I will say it again I don't hate storm I find watching them boring they Too finely drilled but I give Cam smith for someone who doesn't train to keep going what he owes he must be very fit...
