Finals week one

Sydney Roosters vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Sydney Cricket Ground

This is the third meeting between our foundation clubs in 2019, which is unusual. It's also unusual that the Roosters haven't beaten the Bunnies this season, because they usually beat them at least once. The last meeting was only a few days ago, so it's a handy enough guide, although the Bunnies had more to play for and there's been some roster changes for this match. The Chooks welcome back Keary, Taukeiaho, Aubusson and Morris. The Bunnies have two Burgess brothers returning (Tom and George) but Sam is out suspended. James Roberts also returns from suspension and will slot in to replace the injured Gagai. Cameron Murray could be the form player of the NRL right now, and he's become part of a very dynamic attacking combination with Cook, Walker and Reynolds. If the Bunnies win they are the four that get them there, but I'm with the Chooks who are bringing back plenty of big match players and what looks like a slight edge in the forwards.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Roosters 30 defeated Rabbitohs 6

Melbourne Storm vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – AAMI Park

While a loss doesn't mean the season is over for either side, you cannot underestimate the importance of winning a game like this – particularly for the Storm who can potentially make a grand final without having to leave Melbourne. Croft misses out for the returning Munster, who spent the week off retrieving his shoulder which was found several kilometres away from the point of impact. Neither side was super impressive last weekend against lesser opponents but at least the Storm won. That said, the Raiders bring back a whole bunch of proper first graders this weekend in Nicoll-Klokstad, Soliola, Bateman, Rapana and Leilua. The Green Machine will be heading to Melbourne free of fear, after running the Storm down in Melbourne earlier this season. I think they can do it again.

Verdict – Raiders by 2

Result – Raiders 12 defeated Storm 10

Manly Sea Eagles vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – Lottoland (probably)

In the 1993 film Jurassic Park, a team of genetic scientists create a wildlife park of dinosaurs on the island of Isla Nublar. Des Hasler, not afraid to think outside the box, has jetted over and brought back the T-Rex in his over-sized baggage. It's unusual, and potentially just a complete distraction, but Des has always been one to play his own tune. Speaking of dinosaurs, we're likely to have a current Prime Minister (No 1. Sharks fan Morrison) and a former Prime Minister (No. 1 Sea Eagles fan Abbott) in the crowd on Saturday night. Hopefully they don't start throwing asbestos at each other. At full strength the Sea Eagles would be a warm favourite here, but a string of injuries and a likely suspension for Taupau leaves Manly short of proper footballers.

Verdict – Sharks by 14

Result – Sea Eagles 28 defeated Sharks 16

Parramatta Eels vs Brisbane Broncos – Sunday afternoon – Bankwest Stadium

The Broncos have made the eight even though they lost more games than they won this season. Their points differential is 107 points worse than the team in seventh, and 388 points worse than the minor premiers. It doesn't read well, and their efforts in Sydney this season read even worse. They've won just one game in Sydney this season, by 2 points over the Sharks. In every game they lost they were flogged, including last week against the Bulldogs and in round 14 against this opponent at this venue. Yuck!

Verdict – Eels by 8

Result – Eels 58 defeated Broncos 0

Wally Lewis - week one finals selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or Thursday morning

  • STORM vs Raiders
  • Sea Eagles vs SHARKS
  • EELS vs Broncos

That was supposed to read because storm are too finely drilled

Christine 's picture

I just loose interest in watching when storm are playing & then before I know it the game is over it doesn't happen with any other team actually it does bulldogs as well those two teams I just tune out during the games maybe it is just me but my dad says the same when he is watching them play but when they played manly in. Melbourne & it was a bookie rematch & Dylan walker big the fractured eye socket I made bum watch that one I did see that game of storms when 6 layers got sin binned that game was good but storm last that game bring back the big & let the game flow do we really need the bunker...

Christine 's picture

I not against mark or anyone on this site but we are all different & we all have our own opinions & I personally felt I was being attacked by your comments last night just for having an opinion anyway let's drop it my teams I dislike are storm because the age to fondly drilled & they get away with more thongs than other teams do sharks as the thinker says gallen is grub & they should have kept feki ,bulldogs because of there fan base they are the most uncivilised team I'm the Nrl# if I had to choose a anpther team I would probably say warriors because they are so inconsistent but then so is penrith but that is only my opinion & I would rate bulldogs first out of all of those teams bulldogs for me is the worst in the nrl & I will say it again I don't hate storm I find watching them boring they Too finely drilled but I give Cam smith for someone who doesn't train to keep going what he owes he must be very fit...

Steel Panther's picture

I missed that Baggy. I have to be honest but I struggle to watch the NRLW. It wouldn't take much though to be better than the men who are perennial disappointments!! Good luck to your Eels in the Finals.

Christine 's picture

Mark I meant what I said I am not against you i have always said you are a good guy a genuine person so I mean what I say I am not against you at all OK so sorry if I have offended you i just get bored watching storm play it is not a personal attack against you at all so fon'g take it that way OK...

a's picture

Christine you know no one is against you on this site

mark ashford's picture

Christine
No offence taken. You have major health problems so don't need any more stress. Just enjoy the footy mate and keep well!

mark ashford's picture

Hey Steel
You should have watched your ladies play the Roosters. I swear to God some of those girls hit harder than the men on both sides. I must admit I was not sure about a women's comp at the top level but these girls put on a great spectacle and was very good to watch. Maybe I'm getting old and a little in touch with my feminine side or maybe just enjoy seeing the girls belt each other.

Baggy_Gee's picture

The only problem I have with the NRLW is actually the broncos girls. Ever other games is low scoring and when the broncettes? Hit the field they easily put 30 odd points on. And in a very attractive manner, good passes, excellent runs. How is there such a gulf between all the teams?

Christine 's picture

Mark all Is good i am trying to watch the storm game I missed what happened with The fire work i did tip storm if you look aty tips bit I also said I would like Robert raiders win...

Christine 's picture

That was I did say I would like to see taidersvwin but I did tip storm...

Christine 's picture

I hate posting comments on my phone I did tip storm but I said I would like too see raiders wins

Steel Panther's picture

Evening Mark

Trust you are well my friend.

I watch a lot of footy every round & often cop a fair bit of grief for doing so. I'd be well & truly pushing the boundaries if I started watching the NRLW too. I'm watching the Storm now struggling against the Raiders who are winning 6-2 at half time. I must say I share your sentiments about Cronulla. Never liked Gallen & Fifita & the team were worse when Ennis was at number 9.

Anonymous's picture

Because of the idiot who keeps copying me and can’t come up with his own name his last hate poll post being pathetic
I will now be known as the Green Machine formally known as anonymous and never said I was the coach you people created that.

Mary S's picture

Only half way though the match Christine with Raiders leading 6/2

ScottySeahawk's picture

I'm just here for the comments.

Mary S's picture

Hi Anon,
I won't take part in your survey either as I don't hate any of them.

Are there some teams I prefer to watch - then yes.

Sharks haven't been a favourite, mainly because of Gallen & Fifita, I would suggest, although saying that, as Gallen has approached his retirement, his method of play seems to have changed somewhat.

An interesting concept you have put forward though!

Cheers
Mary

Baggy_Gee's picture

How is val Holmes going Seahawk?

ScottySeahawk's picture

He's on the New York Jets practice squad, Baggy, making about a 1/4 of the money he could be earning in the NRL

ScottySeahawk's picture

chasing dreams though so ya gotta give him credit

Baggy_Gee's picture

I always cheered Jared for doing the same. Best of luck to him. That was a bad call by the touchy, but then it should have been a penalty against the Storm for the way the talked to the touchy afternoon the call. That was poor sportsmanship.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Dammit, this means that we have to play the Storm in Melbourne if we win Sunday.

Steel Panther's picture

Well Baggy no one gave the Raiders a chance so you never know....but yea you gotta get past the Broncos first!!

Christine 's picture

I have to give credit to the thinker who did tip raiders 4th I win if only I stuck to my beliefs too i even said it when I put my tips in congrats thinker on your win well done...

Christine 's picture

Still using my phone that was meant to read thinker tipped raiders to aim well done I had the same thoughts but I sent with storm to play it safe if only I had stuck to my beliefs well done thinker well done...

mark ashford's picture

WOW that was one of the most physical games I've watched this year.
Well done to the Raiders and their fans. The last touchy call was unfortunate but wouldn't have made any difference. Goodness there are some big boppers in the Raiders team. Well done the green machine, you may just meet the Storm in the big dance.

ScottySeahawk's picture

I think Raiders deserve to be in Grand Final this year, played outstanding this season. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstadt, especially!

Baggy_Gee's picture

OK Mary the girls stopped tipping because the season was over. They have picked Manly tonight, and the Eels tomorrow, because I will put on the right combination of shirt and Jersey to get the BOYS home.

Steel Panther's picture

Bellyache will be furious with the loss but well done to the Raiders & well done to the Thinker & all others who tipped the Green machine!!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

And how good was that young guy in 14??? Great try and then that return from the kick off. Wow. It was a good game.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Raiders and Storm set the bar high, and Manly exploded out of the blocks. The Sharks look like the knights in rounds 23 and 24, soft and uninterested.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Love ya work Morris. What a tackle of Jorge.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Big Pete how those dancing shoes going mate? How good is that score line?

TipStar's picture

Great game with Raiders beating Storm. However hugely disappointed with the call of the touch judge against The flying winger Viluvaiu. He flew in the air from the short kick off, caught it and did not go out when he went to ground. However was ruled out. I would be very surprised if touch judge keeps his job for rest of the finals. Very poor 😔

Christine 's picture

Johnny awesome will be loving it i bet he is still celebrating & voyeur I have never done anything to you i don't chase people off this site...

Mary S's picture

Great play by Manly tonight. There will be a lot of celebrating going into the wee hours - have fun Big Pete.

Cheers to all
Mary

Christine 's picture

Baggy i just read your team are getting rcg from penrith next year on a 5year deal I didn't know Regan Cambell gillard was going to eels he will be good there for your team can't day I blame him I think a lot of people want out of pennies...

Christine 's picture

I still think there is Lot of unrest going on at penrith we only hear some of it...

Baggy_Gee's picture

As long as they pay a decent proportion of his alleged salary then it's all good. But I'd rather blood some young BOYS than keep pushing them backwards because we brought the next "big" thing. We'll see if he pulls a Evans and starts slow or has his finger firmly pulled out from day dot.

a's picture

That Raiders and Storm game was amazing

Christine 's picture

Baggy you want to hope so you have him for 5 years i hate think about the cost of getting him too but you never know see how he goes my father tells me penrith want to get rid of him & Kane Evans my father refers too as a great Dane big & no brains ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

He has picked up his game this year, but his first season with us was abysmal. Not good enough given what we paid to bring him over. Just don't have that luxury of an overpaid, under performing player at this stage of the club development. But it is done we shall see where the chips land.

Anonymous's picture

Each year the NRL run their own survey of fans of the game for them to decide best of .. like the Dally M’s - although they chuck in a couple of extras like #19 “team you would like to beat the most” - such a politically correct way of asking which team you dislike the most. Interesting that so many fans take part and got similar results to me. I wasn’t copying either. Also suggests hardly a State biased survey when favourite home ground is Suncorp and next immortal Lockyer. Shame so many here feel they are above such a harmless and fun census question.

https://www.nrl.com/news/2019/08/08/2019-nrl-fans-poll-have-your-say-on-...

Steel Panther's picture

At least you only have a player or two in that category Baggy. The Warriors have a whole squad that fits that description!!!

Mary S's picture

Hi Annon,
There were an interesting selection of questions on the survey with more votes directed by fans to who they thought were the best players.

Wonder if NRL will act on the fact that fans were interested in having more teams, yet the majority were happy to see the season stay the same length!!!!

Cheers,
Mary

Anonymous's picture

Mary, Good observation. NRL statisticians will no doubt interpret these two as justification that this is what the fans want, and to have both, a compromise of bringing in a new team, but keeping it at 16 by shafting another / forcing another basket-case problematic merger, or / transplanting an existing team somewhere else. I say, they transplanted the Storm into Melbourne, so just re-transplant our to South Hobart.

Who’s your teams you most like to beat ?

Mary S's picture

As I'm a Cowboys fan Annon - all of the other teams I like us to beat!!!!!

Cheers,
Mary

Anonymous's picture

Yep. I guess when the two points are at a premium, no sense in being choosey.

The Voyeur's picture

Christine I am so pleased you do not chase people off this site, good for you, in fact it seems you chase yourself off here regularly with yourself imposed “I have had enough am I will not be coming back”.......but just like the raiders you actually have a good comeback in ya

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
Your boys are giving a lesson to my Broncs in how to play finals footy.
Can't see how we can come back from here. Are you smokies for the GF?
