Round nineteen selections

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

To avoid the spoon, the Bulldogs will need to win this game or their final round clash with the minor premiers. A top four finish seems unlikely but not impossible for the Rabbits, but top six gives them home ground advantage in week one of the finals. The Dogs have been starting well in recent weeks, but are getting run down because they just don't have enough class in their roster. Josh Jackson plays his 200th NRL game here, and I've no doubt the Dogs will put in and make a game of this. I also have no doubt the Bunnies will be too good over the 80 minutes.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 10

Result – Bulldogs 26 defeated Rabbitohs 16

North Queensland Cowboys vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – Queensland Country Bank Stadium

The Cowboys face an impossible task here, and not just because they are taking on a team that need just one more win to secure the minor premiership. The Thinker is heading up to Townsville for the weekend and will be at the game. I've been to quite a few Cowboys games now, and every time I'm there they lose. The Panthers are resting Tamou and Koroisau, while the Cowboys will be missing McGuire, Asiata and O'Neill. Taumalolo is close to a return but unlikely. In round ten the Cowboys gave the Panthers a scare but eventually succumbed 22-10. The Cowboys are less scary this time, but the margin could be frightening.

Verdict – Panthers by 22

Result – Panthers 32 defeated Cowboys 12

Parramatta Eels vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – Bankwest Stadium

When these sides met earlier this season the Broncos were one of the favourites to win the premiership. That was back in round three, and we have all watched the Broncos season unravel ever since. The Eels are clinging to the top four and this game, potentially at least, gives them a chance to keep the Raiders at bay. That said, their recent results are shakier than a jellyfish tower. In round 12 they beat the Dogs by 2. In round 13 the Sharks by 2. In round 14 they lost to the Dragons. In round 15 they played the Sunshine Coast Falcons/Storm and won 14-0. The win over the Warriors in round 16 had its share of controvery, and their two recent performances against sides in the top eight have seen the Eels concede 58 points and not score a single try. It's been a long season without any byes or rep footy, and I think the Eels have run out of puff. They're tired, but they would have to be asleep to lose to the Broncos. The Broncos are too tired to be tired.

Verdict – Eels by 20

Result – Eels 26 defeated Broncos 12

Manly Sea Eagles vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland

The Sea Eagles have named all three Trbojevic brothers in their extended list for Saturday. It would be bloody tremendous if they all played. For those not familiar with youngest brother Ben, he's like a combination of his older brothers. He can play in the back row or the centres, and he's a big unit with speed. I'll add a link below to a highlights reel, but I look forward to seeing all three of them fronting up for the Sea Eagles in the years ahead. The Titans just keep keeping on, quietly over-achieving while the other Queensland teams flounder like...flounder. They can finish as high as ninth this season, which isn't shabby for a team most expected to be our wooden spooners. Taylor seems happy (and fit) in the halves, and he has some quality forwards and a promising spine to help him on his way. $2.85 for the Titans here if you like them and are into that sort of thing. Doesn't look right to me. Ben Trbojevic highlights.

Verdict – Titans by 2

Result – Titans 42 defeated Sea Eagles 24

Melbourne Storm vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – Sunshine Coast Stadium

Storm ballboy Brandon Smith broke his face (again) about 40 minutes ago, and he's been named on the extended list for the Storm. The little champ must be made of lego. The Storm will probably finish the season in second position, but a minor premiership or dropping to third are still viable outcomes, so they aren't likely to take this game lightly (not that the Storm ever do). The Tigers top eight aspirations are officially over, and most of the interest in this game will be around the performance of Harry Grant against his proper club. He's a good one, not that the Storm need any more good ones.

Verdict – Storm by 28

Result – Storm 50 defeated Tigers 22

Sydney Roosters vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – Sydney Cricket Ground

The Roosters are resting a few big guns on Saturday night, with Tedesco and Taukeiaho warming the pine. Manu slots in at fullback, and he's usually brilliant when he does. The Sharks have secured their top eight berth but have struggled all year against the better teams. By way of example, in round 17 they lost to the Knights 38-10. One week later the Knights played the Roosters, and lost 42-12. I can't see the Chooks beating the Sharks by 60, but I can't see them losing either.

Verdict – Roosters by 24

Result – Roosters 34 defeated Sharks 18

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

The Raiders attack is finding its feet late in the season - they've scored 30+ points in three of their last four outings. That game where they didn't was against the Roosters, so forgiveable. The Warriors have done tremendously well this season, but their finals campaign is over and they've had to send back all the troops they borrowed from other clubs. Back the green, mean winning machine.

Verdict – Raiders by 22

Result – Raiders 26 defeated Warriors 14

Newcastle Knights vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Dragons have an imposing record over the Knights but they have nothing to play for on Sunday night...expect pride, and they haven't shown a lot of that. The Knights have won four in a row at home and this is their last game in Newcastle for the season (unless they jag a home final somehow). They were truly ordinary against the Chooks, but I'm pretty confident here.

Verdict – Knights by 8

Result – Knights 42 defeated Dragons 18

Sa-wat-dee krup,

I’ve got this week off so lots of spare time on my hands. Normally I’d be jetting off overseas to Thailand or Bali but obviously can’t do that because of the “rona” situation. Instead, I’ve just done a load of washing and waiting for my loaf of bread to finish cooking and then maybe a bite to eat. Not sure what’s on the cards after that. In the meantime I thought I may as well get my tips and comments in. I was hoping I could tip a few “roughies” to try and catch those above me on the ladder but all the games this week look straightforward. Might have to leave it until next week 😉. OK, let’s do this thing…

Rabbitohs vs. Bulldogs 75-25 @ ANZ
Ladder Position = Rabbitohs
Bookies Favourite = Rabbitohs

Rabbitohs
With the Rabbitohs leading 20-0 after 26 minutes, the Tigers came back at them and all of a sudden it was 20-12 at the break. In an entertaining second half, the Rabbitohs looked home and hosed at 26-12 with 19 minutes to go. Enter the Tigers’ comeback v2.0. After letting in 2 quick tries the Rabbitohs held on and won a thriller 26-24. I think the Rabbitohs can thank their dominant possession and completion rate in the opening 30 minutes for that win. It could’ve been a slightly better margin had Johnston not dropped Graham’s pass cold. He absolutely butchered an easy try for sure. Seriously, the stats were so similar for the Tigers and Rabbitohs last week that it’s kind of freaky. Except for the error count (Rabbitohs 10 Tigers 15), they were basically the same.

Bulldogs
Despite leading 10-0 early on last week, the Bulldogs basically fell away late in the half and allowed Manly to score 3 tries and all of a sudden they were heading into the sheds 16-10 behind. The Bulldogs were the better side for the first 30 minutes but 30 minutes of good footy doesn’t always win you games. They were good at various stages but could’ve (and should’ve) done better. The try they let Jack Gosiewski score was as soft as butter. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (52%-48%)
Line Breaks (1-8)
Missed Tackles (38-20)
Ineffective Tackles (25-12)
Penalties Conceded (4-11)

Verdict: Rabbitohs

Cowboys vs. Panthers 25-75 @ Townsville
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Cowboys
The Cowboys were first on the board last week against the Storm after scoring their first try in the 4th minute. Unfortunately for them the Storm clicked into gear and put 4 tries past them and the Cowboys went into the sheds 24-4 down. It was a much better effort from the Cowboys in the second half (where they outscored the Storm) but still fell short 36-20. The Cowboys’ effort in the second half was full of merit. They pushed the Storm into semi-panic mode on a number of occasions and showed the Storm to be vulnerable in defence at times. It was due to this pressure that the Cowboys were able to score easy tries in the second 40. Cowboy fans would’ve been proud with the effort and spirit their boys displayed. Can’t say they’d feel the same about Josh McGuire’s “verbal spray” at the referee in the 7th minute. While he was in the bin, the Storm scored 2 tries through the guts. I realise it’s a case of “ifs and buts” but take away those 12 points and things might’ve been different. Just sayin’. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (48%-52%)
Post Contact Metres (355-516)
Line Breaks (3-9)
Missed Tackles (39-17)
Ineffective Tackles (23-15)

Panthers
As much as they dominated the first half last week against the Eels, I reckon the Panthers were a tad lucky to be leading 6-2 at the break. Mansour scores with 6 seconds left on the clock? Seriously? Their second half was a lot better. They simply ground their way past a brave Eels and went on to win comfortably in the end 20-2. Not convincing in my mind but comfortable nevertheless. An absolutely awesome game from Dylan Edwards, ably assisted by Cleary and Luai. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (65%-35%)
All Run Metres (2223-1326)
Post Contact Metres (854-532)
Line Breaks (5-0)
Forced Drop Outs (5-0)
Missed Tackles (24-43)
Ineffective Tackles (21-13)
Ruck Infringements (3-8)

Verdict: Panthers

Eels vs. Broncos 70-30 @ Bankwest
Ladder Position = Eels
Bookies Favourite = Eels

Eels
The Eels only scored 2 points for the entire match from that first half penalty but with the amount of defensive work they had to do, you could excuse them for that. Even though they lost 20-2, the scoreline didn’t reflect how well the Eels did overall. The Eels really manned up on the Panthers last week and made them work hard for their win and for that, they deserve some credit. In the end they just had no answer to the pressure that the Panthers were putting on them. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (35%-65%)
All Run Metres (1326-2223)
Post Contact Metres (532-854)
Line Breaks (0-5)
Forced Drop Outs (0-5)
Missed Tackles (43-24)
Ineffective Tackles (13-21)
Ruck Infringements (8-3)

Broncos
As they’ve done lately, the Broncos started well and were the first to score after just 6 minutes in their clash with the Titans last week. Unfortunately for the Broncos, that would be their only score for the remainder of the game and they lost a disappointing one 18-6. The Broncos defence wasn’t too bad but their attack was somewhat lacking (obviously). Too many poor decisions, poor kicking and ball handling errors in the second half certainly didn’t help their cause. They had a few opportunities to get back into it but missed chances from Fifita, Staggs and Paix ruined whatever hope they had. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (46%-54%)
Line Breaks (0-4)
Missed Tackles (19-25)

Verdict: Eels

Manly vs. Titans 55-45 @ Brookvale
Ladder Position = Manly
Bookies Favourite = Manly

Manly
Down 10-0 early on last week against the Bulldogs, Manly got their act together and scored 4 tries just before and after half-time which eventually saw them leading 22-10. A lot of that had to do with Daly Cherry-Evans. After a poor start he really picked up his game and steered Manly to a 32-20 win. Harper’s try in the 52nd minute was an absolute joy to watch. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (48%-52%)
Line Breaks (8-1)
Missed Tackles (20-38)
Ineffective Tackles (12-25)
Penalties Conceded (11-4)

Titans
After the Broncos were first to score last week, the Titans charged back into the match, dominating possession and territory and scored 2 tries and went into the break leading 12-6. The Titans “team” try just 3 minutes into the second half was a beauty. It gave the Titans an 18-6 lead and ended up being the last score for the match and just as well. The remaining 37 minutes was a display of how not to play the game. There was some poor decision making, execution, kicking and ball handling from both sides. But on balance the Titans were the better side on the night and ran out 18-6 winners, thanks in part to a good first half and some solid defence in the second. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (54%-46%)
Line Breaks (4-0)
Missed Tackles (25-19)

Verdict: Manly

Storm vs. Tigers 70-30 @ Sunshine Coast
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Storm
After the Cowboys scored in the 4th minute, the Storm rallied, applied the pressure, did what they do best, put on 4 tries and went into the break leading 24-4. That tremendous first half effort laid the foundation for their 36-20 win. Having said that, the Cowboys managed to expose the Storm’s lack of defensive effort and at times, the Storm were unable to counter the Cowboys’ attacking forays. In the end the Storm’s class prevailed and they got the win, albeit not totally convincingly. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (52%-48%)
Post Contact Metres (516-355)
Line Breaks (9-3)
Missed Tackles (17-39)
Ineffective Tackles (15-23)

Tigers
After the Rabbitohs got out to a 20-0 lead last week I thought the Tigers were gone. To their credit, the Tigers fought back and were still a chance going into the break only trailing 20-12. With just 19 minutes to go they were down 26-12 but once again fought back (as they did the previous week) and scored a couple of quick tries but fell short and lost a thriller 26-24. They threw plenty at the Rabbitohs in the last 10 minutes but poor execution at crucial stages let them down. Even so, they simply refused to lie down. Seriously, the stats were so similar for the Tigers and Rabbitohs last week that it’s kind of freaky. Except for the error count (Tigers 15 Rabbitohs 10), they were basically the same.

Verdict: Storm

Roosters vs. Sharks 70-30 @ SCG
Ladder Position = Roosters
Bookies Favourite = Roosters

Roosters
Without any bias whatsoever 😉, the Roosters were simply brilliant last week against the Knights. They ran in 5 tries and were leading 30-12 at the main break. While they only scored 2 more tries in the second half, they did keep the Knights scoreless and cruised to a 42-12 win. The win may have been bigger had they not blown a number of second half chances. The disallowed try to Lindsay Collins was an absolute joke! What’s a player supposed to once he plays the ball? Ashley Klein and Jared Maxwell should both be ashamed at how wrong they got that BS decision 🤬. Great efforts from Keary, Tedesco and Taukeiaho. Good to see the “regulars” showing solid form again. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (55%-45%)
Line Breaks (8-1)
Offloads (20-6)
Missed Tackles (18-36)
Ineffective Tackles (9-29)

Sharks
The Sharks started well last week against the Warriors after Shaun Johnson laid on grubbers for Katoa and Mulitalo to score tries and get out to a 12-0 lead after 34 minutes. The Warriors scored a late try and it was 12-6 at the break. The Warriors fought back in the second half and were in front 14-12 with just 7 minutes to play and you thought the fairytale might come true but the Sharks dug deep and after tries to Rudolf (a very good try to be honest) and Mulitalo, the Sharks got home in a sometimes uninspiring affair 22-14. The Sharks left it late but got the win. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (53%-47%)
Line Breaks (7-3)
Ineffective Tackles (25-17)
Penalties Conceded (6-9)

Verdict: Roosters. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔

Raiders vs. Warriors 65-35 @ GIO
Ladder Position = Raiders
Bookies Favourite = Raiders

Raiders
It was a fairly even affair last week when the Raiders faced off against the Dragons. Some slightly better kicking saw the Raiders leading 14-8 going into the sheds at the break. The Raiders had to work for their first half lead but in the second half they were simply too strong for the Dragons, kept them scoreless and ran away with a convincing 37-8 win. Great efforts from Wighton, Whitehead and Williams gave the struggling Dragons defence no chance. In the end the Raiders were just too classy. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (56%-44%)
Line Breaks (7-3)
Missed Tackles (18-31)

Warriors
The Sharks got out to 12-0 lead early on last week but the Warriors didn’t panic and they worked their way back into the game, scored a late try and went into the sheds 12-6 behind. The Warriors had a good second half and after a magnificent penalty goal from Chanel Harris-Tevita, were leading 14-12 with 7 minutes to go but then had their hopes dashed when the Sharks scored 2 quick tries to steal the match 22-14. They tried their best but failed to get the result they needed. Given their dramas with injuries and being away from home amid all the demands brought on by COVID-19, it was an effort to be admired and applauded. Thank you Warriors 💪. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (47%-53%)
Line Breaks (3-7)
Ineffective Tackles (17-25)
Penalties Conceded (9-6)

Verdict: Raiders

Knights vs. Dragons 60-40 @ McDonald Jones
Ladder Position = Knights
Bookies Favourite = Knights

Knights
You know you’re in trouble when a side scores 5 tries against you in the first half. And that’s what happened to the Knights last week when they faced off against the Roosters. Mind you, the Knights did well to score 2 tries in a 7 minute period but in the end they were out-gunned and off of a disappointing second half where they went scoreless, they finally succumbed to a demoralising 42-12 loss. Their defence seemed a little soft for most parts and they lacked in execution. For some reason they failed to answer the domination and pressure that was applied. They need to turn it around if they’re any hope of progressing in the finals. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (45%-55%)
Line Breaks (1-8)
Offloads (6-20)
Missed Tackles (36-18)
Ineffective Tackles (29-9)

Dragons
The Dragons were competitive in the first half last week against the Raiders and went to the main break 14-8 down. They could’ve been closer had it not been for poor kicking and a few errors. Their second half was a disaster for them though. Their defence was poor and they were kept scoreless after a ruthless Raiders side muscled them out of the contest and they lost a disappointing one 37-8. It was an impressive debut from Cody Ramsay who scored a double. It might’ve been a hat-trick had Lomax not been called for offside 😱. A great debut where Cody showed some genuine speed and he looks a promising prospect for the future. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession (44%-56%)
Line Breaks (3-7)
Missed Tackles (31-18)

Verdict: Knights

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

To say my taste in music is diverse would be an understatement 🙄

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.

Hey Newbie, would you also call the Cowboys last second 2015 Grand Final try a fluke as well, or a clutch play at the death from a team unstoppably focused on finding that gap in the opposition line ?

Tell me otherwise more about the Panthers flukey season. Do you think they were lucky to win the Roosters game?, maybe the Storm game?, how about the Raiders games?, the Souths game? possibly the Sharks games? Please fill me in on what I’ve missed.

Coach
What amazes me about you is you slink off this site a couple of years ago after annoying most here and your Panthers did the same in the comp. Now you come back after the Panthers string wins together and you continue on in your arrogant way. Try a bit of humility, it goes a long way. With your attitude you won't get any sympathy when the Panthers get beaten.

Coach Potato's picture

How does support = arrogance (?) Have a look at yourself I suggest. Corona virus + Busted Broncos must be doing your head in, I well understand.

@ Coach

Nah, the Cowboys try in the 2015 GF was no fluke. I’m thinking you might be hinting at whether or not you think I reckon the Cowboys were “lucky” to score that try at the death. I see where you’re coming from with your “clutch play at the death from a team unstoppably focused on finding that gap in the opposition line” comment and the relevance to that Panthers try and from that viewpoint you’d be spot on and I take your point 😉. Me saying the Panthers were lucky to get their try last week 6 seconds before the first half siren was just my take on what I saw and nothing more. I suppose we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

Mate, the Panthers are exceptional this year. You know that, I know that. The wins you mentioned against the “better” teams (Roosters, Storm, Rabbitohs, Raiders, Eels, Sharks) were no fluke. I don’t mind admitting they deserved those wins. I have no problem with giving credit where credit’s due. I’m just not as “passionate” about the footy as some people. Call it a blessing or call it a curse. All I’m saying is that even the best sides get lucky (and unlucky) sometimes 😉. Don’t they say that great teams make their own luck?

Anyway brother, hope that clears things up. I’ll just tiptoe on out of here 🤪 but I’ll be back later to check in with upcoming comments. Yes, you’re definitely keeping the site alive mate. Cheers 🥂.

The Thinker's picture

The Panthers five year plan has finally come good, but it hasn't taken five years, and it hasn't come cheap.

The club loses millions every year, and the last I heard they were expecting to lose $9 million this year. $9 million, in a year where they have lost just one game.

So where does all the money come from to keep the Panthers afloat? It comes from the Panthers Group, which owns five leagues clubs, and their profits don't come from selling $12 schnitzels on a Tuesday night. Still, it's good to see them finally producing some results on the back of all that money and all those juniors.

By comparison, the Broncos couldn't possibly have a worse season than this one, but in 2020 they will still actually make a profit.

Coach Potato's picture

What a laugh. Must have burnt the midnight candle with the negative spin on such a great run. Closer to the greatest of all time. A team chock full of loyal juniors. They have been the excitement machines of the comp that has offered some of the poorest excuses for rugby league dressed in 17 Broncos jerseys. Why not talk about your own shitheap.

Summary of teams in premiership contention (assessment by Coach appears in brackets:

* Roosters - current favourite, 8 grand final appearances this century, 4 premierships this century, on track for an historic threepeat which hasn't happened for 37 years. Have played interstate in rounds 4, 8, 9, 11 and 17. Six of the players that played in their 2018 premiership side are no longer there.

(bunch of cheats and crooks)

* Storm - current second favourite, won the premiership in their second year in the competition, played in 3 of the last 4 grand finals. Have had to move their entire squad 2000km away from home for the entire season. Have travelled interstate seven times from the Sunshine Coast. Six of the players that played in their 2018 side are no longer there. Led around the park by a player who gets a seniors discount on the bus.

(bunch of cheats and crooks....their captain should be in jail)

* Panthers - current third favourite, have won two premierships in 54 years. Didnt make a grand final in their first 24 years. Didn't leave home for the first ten rounds of the season.

(the most exciting story in rugby league)

You make a very ballsy comeback after a long hiatus and it's probably got a lot to do with the Penny Panthers doing so well. Since you've been back on the site you have taken aim at most of the tipsters and as Mark suggested, why don't you try a little humility.

Now I feel the need to defend the Boss, you can't take aim at him like you have, the rest of team will turn on you(wait, we already have).

I'm sure the Thinker is big enough to handle your attack with grace and composure, let me the first to tell you that you should offer an apology to the boss.

You refuse a bit of well meant advice and now look what's happened.
You have alienated 99% of the posters here by trying to belittle the Thinker who we all agree is sacrosanct.
Do you have a feeling of deja vu? Seems this is how we went a couple of years ago. I admire your support of the Panthers and understand your excitement as we approach the finals. Winners will be grinners so good luck. I'll ignore your remarks about the Broncs as I feel they are below your intelligence. Panthers 2 premierships in 54 years Broncs 6 in 32 years. Something to think about.

Steel Panther's picture

Does anyone else remember F Witt's brother Michael. He played at the Warriors a few years ago after time at both Para and Manly. Michael will always be remembered for scoring the match winning try v Storm in the first week of the play offs in 2008. He crossed the chalk with only minutes to go and before dotting down held the ball aloft. The Warriors won against all odds registering one of their greatest wins.

Got to say Michael Witt was pretty good for the BOYS. There are a list of forgotten players that really made a difference to their team for a long period. The other one I think of often is M. DeVere. I miss him as a player for the Blues.

Thanks for the support football fans, but none of you need to defend me against the Coach. He's a rabid fan, and can't understand why everyone else isn't a card carrying member of the Panthers Appreciation Society. And he fires up at the slightest hint of anything he construes as a criticism of him or his team. As Taylor Swift would say...he needs to calm down.

Interestingly he's claimed that I have taken a set against his team, but here are my tips in Panthers games this season:

Panthers by 22, Panthers by 13, Panthers by 22, Panthers by 8, Panthers by 10, Panthers by 20, Panthers by 1, Sea Eagles by 1, Panthers by 8, Panthers by cakewalk, Panthers by 4, Panthers by 10, Panthers by 4, Storm by 4, Panthers by 1, Panthers by 4, Panthers by 4, Panthers by 10, Roosters by 8.

Clearly I think they are crap.

Please don't think(er) you have to defend yourself against Coach. Your tips this year speak volumes. I'm beginning to feel sorry for him as he has such a one track mind.
