Round one selections

Parramatta Eels vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – Bankwest Stadium

Parramatta begin season 2020 with lofty expectations, but this is a team with a history (since 1986 at least) of struggling under the weight of such expectations. Last in 2018 and fifth in 2019, they appear to be heading in the right direction. Were they to miss the top eight this season it would be an epic fail, but failure is one thing this club knows well. They kick off the season at Bankwest, a venue that has become quite a fortress for them (although they did lose to the Bulldogs at this ground late last season). Campbell-Gillard debuts with his new club, and I'm hopeful that the change of scenery will see him return to the sort of form that saw him, albeit fleetingly, as one of the best props in the game. This is a good test first up, as the Bulldogs always turn up with a pack of forwards that will make you earn your keep. I genuinely believe the Bulldogs are a top eight team this season, and I'm expecting a tighter contest than most, but that home ground advantage and the enthusiasm that the first game of the season brings, sees me tipping the Eels.

Verdict – Eels by 2

Result – Eels 8 defeated Bulldogs 2

Canberra Raiders vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – GIO Stadium

The Raiders, grand finalists last year and oh so close, take on the 2019 wooden spooners. The Titans won just four games last year, and they've lost one of their most important players in Ryan James in what appears to be a season-ending injury. He's a huge loss, and Friday night could be another huge loss.

Verdict – Raiders by 16

Result – Raiders 24 defeated Titans 6

North Queensland Cowboys vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – Queensland Country Bank Stadium

The game has come a long way since 1995, and even moreso the Cowboys. In their inaugural season, the first grade team were called in to lay the turf on the ground in the days leading up to the first game. Kerry Boustead, the inaugural CEO, ducked off to the shops before the gates opened to get toilet paper for the portaloos. In 2020, we're all running out of toilet paper, but the Cowboys have a bloody nice stadium in the right part of town. It's a huge boost for the club, the city and the game. Fingers crossed they stocked up on toilet paper before now. You couldn't have them playing any other team for their first game at the new venue, with these two clubs giving us some of the best club rugby league we have seen in recent years. Both sides are coming off disappointing seasons, and both have rosters that are good enough to be playing finals footy in 2020. The Broncos have lost Matt Lodge and will probably lose Alex Glenn, and while they have an extraordinarily brilliant pack of forwards they will be without two of their most senior and sensible figures. It's highly likely that Patrick Carrigan, barely 22 years of age, gets the (c) beside his name on Friday night. He's a tremendous young man, but it's a big ask to expect him to keep all those other big units in check. Plenty of eyes will be on Valentine Holmes, the big ticket signing for the Cowboys. He'll go well...and the Cowboys will christen the new home ground with a win.

Verdict – Cowboys by 4

Result – Broncos 28 defeated Cowboys 21

Newcastle Knights vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium

It's not easy to make outlandish claims in the first week of a season - this game can make the best of judges look quite the fool. That said, I'm foolish enough to suggest that the Knights are good things on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors are notoriously slow starters, they're away from home, they're short on big forwards, and their best player (Tuivasa-Sheck) is in doubt. Their coach could be updating his linkedin profile early this year. Speaking of coaches, the Knights have handed the clipboard to Adam O'Brien. He's got a good pedigree, spending time in assistant roles with the Storm and the Roosters. The Knights trial form, for what that's worth, has impressed, and there's a feeling around town that O'Brien has this team doing all the right things. With the Warriors down on forwards, the Knights pack can dominate here, and Jayden Brailey has the speed and the hands to give Pearce and Ponga the room they need to deliver.

Verdict – Knights by 10

Result – Knights 20 defeated Warriors 0

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Most eyes will be on Latrell Mitchell in the red and green. The club, and the coach, look a good fit for him. Plenty are questioning him in the fullback role, including me, but having players of the calibre of Cook, Murray and Walker steering you into gaps should make it easier. He will need to stay engaged in defence, but that's up to him really. I expect he will be relieved of kicking duties, at least while new club captain Adam Reynolds is on the paddock. Potentially, this is the best spine in the NRL, so let's see if they deliver. My eyes will also be on a couple of young guns for the Sharks. Cronulla have let Jayden Brailey go and stuck with younger brother Blayke (clearly their parents love the letter 'y') - big wraps. Billy Magoulias looks set to become a regular first grader this season after impressing the Bluebags at Newtown. Promising youngsters both of them, but with doubts over a whole bunch of the Sharks key players (Dugan, Moylan, Xerri, Johnson) I'll tip the Bunnies.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4

Result – Rabbitohs 22 defeated Sharks 18

Penrith Panthers vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – Panthers Stadium

Back-to-back premierships is quite the feat, and the Chooks are the current favourite to win the title again this season. Cooper Cronk and Latrell Mitchell have departed, but they still have a roster that is the envy of just about all others. There are no big-name recruits this season, but they don't need any. Penrith, on the other hand, are spending and losing more money than every other club and have little to show for it. Even Phil Gould has given up, jumping ship to the Dragons this season. They're a frustrating side, and they're not even my side. The Roosters are on the back-up from the World Club Challenge, but they were on light duties during the Nines tournament and I expect they'll be fine. Too much class.

Verdict – Roosters by 8

Result – Panthers 20 defeated Roosters 14

Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – Lottoland

I've got a peaceful easy feeling that the Eagles can win the premiership this year (did you see what I did there kids? Come on....that's not bad). This is a good early test of their capacities against one of the great Australian sporting clubs of the modern era. Manly are missing a decent chunk of their engine room (and some real spelling challenges for The Thinker) in round one with Jake Trbojevic, Addin Fonua-Blake, Jack Gosiewski and Taniela Paseka all unavailable with injury. The Storm pack will be without Brandon 'waiting for a mate' Smith and Christian Welch but otherwise look strong - my mail is Asofa-Solomona will play despite a hamstring issue and a colourful off-season. While I expect the Sea Eagles will make a game of it (and this is the game of the round), the Storm almost never lose the first game of the season. I can't find enough reasons to tip against them.

Verdict – Storm by 2

Result – Storm 18 defeated Sea Eagles 4

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – WIN Stadium

Now that The Mole is basically a celebrity, I've stepped up into the role of Australia's most famous anonymous rugby league tipster. With the role comes great responsibility - at times I have to make judgement calls I don't particularly wish to make. Here's one such call:

I don't like the Tigers line-up...at all.

Now the Tigers aren't my team, but I do have a soft spot for them, and I want them doing well. I hope they prove me wrong, but I fear I'm right. The Dragons, even without McInnes, Korbin Sims and Dufty, will beat this lot on Sunday afternoon. Ouch!

Verdict – Dragons by 4

Result – Tigers 24 defeated Dragons 14

Wally Lewis - round one selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or Thursday morning

  • EELS vs Bulldogs
  • RAIDERS vs Titans
  • COWBOYS vs Broncos
  • KNIGHTS vs Warriors
  • RABBITOHS vs Sharks
  • Panthers vs ROOSTERS
  • Sea Eagles vs STORM
  • DRAGONS vs Tigers

Given the very tight travel restrictions for New Zealand, I'm wondering how the NRL can continue from here.

What do you do with the Warriors? A team can't travel to New Zealand and self-isolate for 14 days before a game.

It would be a big ask to expect the Warriors and their support crew to relocate to Australia and stay here until this blows over.

There's every chance they suspend the entire comp after round one. Yeeeeessshsshhsshhsshshshshshshhhhh

Steel Panther's picture

If I could add my 50 cents worth Thinker....pull the Warriors from the comp this year & give each team a bye & the two points because based on what I saw yesterday, the opposition will get the two points when they play the Warriors anyway.....

Rick's picture

I agree Thinker 😞😓 it is looking that way with each passing day from what I see, there does not seem to be many alternatives available sadly.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Well the NRL has a shed load of cash from T.V. rights, that is being sent to the wrong areas. This is exactly what a surplus is meant to look after, pay the Warriors their salary cap so the can retain their players, and let them spend a season on skills and drills. Sad that the so call "champion" of the game has not enough bottle to play to an empty stadium, Harden up son.

I told you rocket i changed my tip i lost tigers one it is like the unspoken rule stick too your tip or loose on the thinkers comp i second guess myself but when i won tje in house comps all 3 i never did there was alot more people in that but now tell me you didn't change it doesn't matter if i do i am not on the tipping ladder ???

Christine's picture

Well rocket what did you do toss a coin flip or stick i will no at the end of the rd with your score anywsy so fess up ...

Christine's picture

We should all know by the end of 4 round which teams will do any good or not thats providing the nrl don't suspend the season which is what cam smith is calling for & you all know what cam smith wants he gets ...

JKBubble's picture

The NRL made a 90 million dollar net profit in 2018/2019.... i think they are going to need evey cent this year to keep the comp running. Then again steel panthers comment makes sense and would save some $$$. Im going to add to it and say the saints should take a year off as well and that way the comp can carry on with an even number of teams (14). As a saints supporter i dont know if i can take watching another year of dismal performances so its probably better for all if they do take a year off. I might make a request to Greenberg!

Steel Panther's picture

JK...I feel your pain. With a pack that boasts Merrin, Graham, Frizzell, Vaughan & Sims plus a halves combo of Hunt and Norman you would have expected better yesterday. I tipped the Dragons on the "they usually start well" theory plus they were at home. I was even more confident when Brooks pulled out of the Tigers line up. Old man Marshall had the ball on a string for them. If McGregor can't get a team like that up maybe it's time for him to go.

NuL1F3's picture

Good Monday morning everyone! What a start to the season.. A season that looks to be interrupted at this stage. A major false start for some teams with Dragons looking the worst of the lot. Wow! They looked the stronger team for a bit there and should have won that match but those errors!!? Also, how good was Benji?!

Panthers beat the Roosters.. I don't think I was ever going to tip against two in a row premiership winners so I can't feel bad about getting that one wrong. Great game by the Panthers!

My beloved Cowboys... Certainly did not look the goods at all in the first half. Came strong halfway through the second but once again, too little too late. Why do they always seem to save it till the last minute? The Broncos looked like an absolute force! Still proving that they are indeed big brother and not a cousin (yet).

Can they keep it up? This is the best I have seen them in a long time! For their and their fans sake, I hope it wasn't an undisciplined Cowboys side making them look better than they are. Still, was a great game to watch, these two sides rarely disappoint when they come up against each other.

I was never tipping against my boys in round one, especially against what I believed a weaker Broncos side, playing in a brand new home with Holmes in the pack. So I don't mind loosing that point either. Except of course for 'The 'a' game'.. I'm already down a strike!!

Thanks for the tunes Mary and Newbie, I enjoyed each one!

Finally, congrats to Nik who got 10 for 10 in that first round!! Hell yeah!

Peace!

Christine, it's not about "what Cam Smith wants he gets", it's a matter of safety for the players and the fans. Plus he's not the only player calling for the season to be suspended, Daly Cherry Evan's is another along with many more.

ScottySeahawk's picture

**sorry I meant to say that DCE as well as many others want to play but its up to the NRL. They'll be criticized for continuing season or suspending it, regardless. Seems I'm having mobile phone troubles today..

Good Morning Thinker
Just checking is there a leaderboard to check how we are progressing in this year's comp
Even though suspending the comp is looking likely
Regards
The Last Samurai

Steel Panther's picture

One minute you are going on about how serious this global medical situation is Christine then the next minute you're bagging Cam Smith for wanting the season suspended in the best interests of both players & spectators.

Yes it annoys me how you constantly bag Smith & Melbourne....

BigPeteBx's picture

Evenin there Samurai - yes Thinker has a leaderboard, but it wouldn't be posted up just yet. Depends on Thinkers weekend life as well and also the fact that this 2020 season, he has more tippers to play with and sort out wins from losses.
Good to see u r keen here, but as we all past tippers know - Rome wasn't made in a day.
Cheers, keep well and I'll see you through the season.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello Mark - nice to see you again in print.
I lost a thread you posted, but recall some questions - the "peepers" are going ok, until brights lights intrude me. Op planned for late April. Great to hear that Gregs chicken pieces are good. I'll let them know next time we (his partner) and I speak.
Long season ahead of us this NRL 2020 one, if we can get to play matches. I feel for the good of the game, but in the short term, let players at least play at empty stadiums, so that the comp isn't intruded and so forth. If players become an issue with the dreaded virus, then suspend it.

BTW - not sure if it is NSW in your TLH post, but there is a Glebe in Sydney out near Balmain and Rozelle area. I know it well, as some past rels lived near there and a friend at Lilyfield (not far from Leichhardt Oval........a friend I know, had a previous interest with The London Hotel at Balmain.

I do apologise to each and all, as the past month has been taken up heavily, with the organising of our local sports awards dinner, which I am directly involved with and have been for the awards presentation, for the past 30 plus years.

Well buddy - I must move on for now, but do keep in touch and I truly appreciate your friendship here.

No steel the consensus in this house with my father is what cam smith wants he gets my father has always said that even though he rates cam smith as a true professional that is just his opinion & he also says cherry is a bit too precious for his liking but that is just him no need to jump down my throat ,i can see the nrls point of view yes it is a business for them & they do stand too losr alot of money from it but if just one player gets coronavirus then that puts out two teams straight away & the way this virus is spreading it is highly possible ...

The Thinker's picture

Greetings The Last Samurai

I'll try and get the tipping comp/leaderboard updated tonight.

Just juggling a few corona-virus related non-NRL issues of my own.

Evenin Steely - only first round mate. Times can change, just like Phoenix have and are coming home in a bolter.

I see your sister band Steel Panther (heavy metal) are touring Auckland on 20th May, then over the ditch to us.

Cheers Champ and keep well

tigerholic's picture

Come On Steel
Christine can have her opinion and I agree with her. All NRL players will have their thoughts on whether to play on or suspend the season. Cam Smith will always rub me up the wrong way and just because he says something, doesn't mean its gospel.
I watched the Manly verse Melbourne game and one of the big forwards from Manly wanted to throttle Cam Smith, god I wish we still had the biff.

Tiger

The Butcher's picture

I can’t believe this but I agree with the tiger on this one
He rubs me the wrong way too
I remember seeing my psychiatrist and he would hold up a picture and I had to say the first words that came into my head.
You know like he held up a wooden spoon I said Eels then he held up a trophy I said roosters or a picture saying half price tequila I said pangai junior(cheap shot)
My psychiatrist said I was puzzled by one of your answers why did you say Cam Smith when I showed you a worm?
Oh was that a worm I thought it was a grub.

Christine's picture

Just because you don't like what i said it doesn't mean i am not entitled to have an opinion apparenrly you are remember that we all have different opinions & you don't have to get your backs up because in turn mine now is so according to you guys i am only allowsd an opinion if it is the same as yours ,stop being simple everyone is allowed an opjnion they don'tvall have to agree with me or you for that matter ...

mark ashford's picture

HEY ALL
We are in a very challenging situation with this virus and saying things like "Cameron Smith gets what he wants" is nonsense do you really think Cam Smith has the ability to shut down our comp??? This will be a decision from Todd Greenburg or the managers of the various clubs.
Round 2 will proceed behind closed stadiums and who knows where we will go from that. I hope we will proceed with the best interests of the players and their familys from there. HEY in the interests of this country I wont complain if it shuts down until we have an answer to this virus.
But please don't blame Cam Smith for whatever happens in NRL.

Esra Star's picture

You're not ailing are you mate?

mark ashford's picture

TIGERHOLIC & THE BUTCHER
You NSW tragics have always hated Cam Smith when his Storm or Maroons flogged you. BUT I never heard a word when he led Australia to win after win. Time for a bit of balance boys. Cam Smith is a champion player and should be respected as such
Butcher if your Psychiatrist had held up a picture of Paul Gallen would you have said a dedicated lover of all people, particulary other NRL players?

mark ashford's picture

ESRA STAR
No mate I'm all good.

a's picture

Yeah anyone can have an opinion as long as they respect others

Christine's picture

Mark i just busted your arguement open i am a quennsland supporter i just live in nsw i have never backed Nsw in my life nor i ever would but cam smith still gets what cam smith wants you can argue as much as you all like but i am atill entitled to my opinion as are you all too but on a bigger picture what if this virus interupts state of origin then all hell will break loose it has the potential too they now say about quuarenteening us for 4 months ,my fathercomes back cfom thailand on wednesdaybe interesting too see wheather they make him quarenteen he says he won't but it is a $10000.00 fine if you don't , you didn't have ro when he left to go there but it has all changed ...

Greetings football fans,

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping competition. A big shout out to one of our longest serving and wisest tipsters, Nik, who has jumped out of the gates with a perfect round....in round one.

Outstanding work sir.

If anyone feels like there are errors with the results just let me know in the comments and I will investigate.

I will have the round two tipping page published tomorrow.

It's hard to know how much longer we will be doing this - there's every chance Nik could end this season with a 100% strike rate.

All the best

Christine's picture

Thinker what about todd greenberg susending the season if he has too & only if he has too but we still get state of origin what do you think about that & if what they say is true send it to a warmer climate & have all 3 games in one place ,preferable not suspend it at all butbonly in worse case scenario i how ca we posdible have a grand final if a few games get suspended surely it could affect the out come leading into finals ...

Christine's picture

Sorry for the wording there guys but you get the jist of it all no one thought about how any of thiscwull affect state of origin or the grand final ...

Rob181's picture

Hi Thinker
I was one of the "newbies" who couldn't add my tips in the traditional manner so posted them on this page. You commented thereafter that you would see if they (mine & others) could be added to the competition proper.
Given mine were posted well before the first game commenced I am hoping you will include me in the competition & my tips for Round 1.
Know you are busy - so please advise when you get the chance.
Thanks
Rob

Christine's picture

Yes thinker rob has been asking for a while now but it is your comp your the boss it is up too you i will leave it in your hands ...

Christine's picture

What i just said abour state of origin freddy fitler is also ssying but i said it before i just read what he said basically the same thing have a stand alone origin you could do it all in one hit even if the season gets suspended the nrl is considering doing so i think ...

a's picture

When will you update my comp Thinker

Mary S's picture

Hi 'a'

It looks like Thinker had a very busy night last night, getting our comp ladder up and running.
I imagine he will update the 3 strikes comp ( which is always a great comp) as soon as he can. Have to say - I didn't get off to a good start this season!!!

Cheers
Mary

Steel Panther's picture

My apologies if I've got it wrong. All this time I thought it was Todd Greenburg who made the decisions on the running of the NRL? Now I find out it's Cam Smith. I'm in shock. Such a multi talented guy..... player, CEO and pretty good ref too. What a CV...

The Thinker's picture

Greetings Rob181

Welcome aboard. Apologies for the delays, but I have added you to the tipping comp now. I'm not quite sure how long the comp will be this season, but good luck to you, and thanks for taking part.

If you login and visit the round two page you should see a link that allows you to submit your tips. If you have any issues or need a hand just let me know.

Morning All

I just worked out why Cam Smith is calling for a suspension of the NRL for a short period, he had a shit off season and is not fit enough to play on, he is clutching at straws already.
This thought was for you and Rocket Mark A

Greetings a,

Will get to that today. Sorry...a bit going on, what with the world tipping toward some sort of zombie apocalpyse.

Morning Again
The game of footy is just a sport that allows us to enjoy the whole spectacle, there is life outside of footy that is all of our realities.

So to Mark A and Rocket and all of the other supporters of Cam Smith, I am fully supportive of any decision that the NRL makes and if that means suspend the comp then thats what is has to be.

All of this banter is fantastic and I do enjoy poking the fire a bit but when the reality of life needs to be taken over a sport, then thats how it is.

Have a great day everyone, hope you are well Christine.

Thanks tiger on my way to make sure i don't have coronavirus i will let you all know ...

Tiger,

Well said but I'm feeling neglected.....couldn't agree more with your thoughts on life. And yes we all know you've had it tough just hope things are on the improve for you!!

Hey Steel
You must be in Tiger's good books as only myself and Rocket got a mention. Poor old Rocket didn't even come to Cams defense!
Not much love here for Cam Smith but hey you're all entitled to your opinions.

Mark ,steel & snyone else for that matter i am not for one minute saying cam smith runs the whole nrl but i am saying hd is an influence on decisiobs that made thats why they ask him thsy vslue his feed back so stop telling ms i van't havebN ipinion or just don't bother to address me at all mark ...
