Round seventeen selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Penrith Panthers – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

Broncos fans are doing it tough at the minute. A number of them have confided in me and told me how difficult it has been to stay solid. To these people I say this - a football team is like your wife or husband. Sometimes they let you down, sometimes they embarrass you, and sometimes you wonder if you should just give up and start supporting someone else. But you made a commitment to your team, and that beanie on your head means something. So my advice is to stick with your club/wife/husband, but don't tip the Broncos on Thursday night because they are bloody hopeless this season. For the record, if we excluded the first two rounds of the season (pre Covid), not only would the Broncos be outright last, their points differential would be 142 points worse than the team running second last. For the wealthiest club in the NRL, it is simply extraordinary. Kikau and Koroisau return for the Panthers to strengthen the visitors in what should be a procession.

Verdict – Panthers by 22

Result – Panthers 25 defeated Broncos 12

Newcastle Knights vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Knights and the Sharks are almost certainly playing finals football this year, but a win on Friday night virtually seals it while the loser will have to hold out the Warriors. The Knights were disappointing last start but the circumstances of that game were unusual. Returning to their home ground (where they have won three games in a row) has to help. I'm assuming Daniel Saifiti returns for the home side and he's a big inclusion if he does. As I write the Sharks are still running the set squares over Townsend, Johnson, Moylan, Ramien and Dugan. Some of them may play, with Townsend most likely, but with so many potential line-up changes I'm with the Novacastrians.

Verdict – Knights by 2

Result – Knights 38 defeated Sharks 10

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Melbourne Storm – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

Just as Latrell Mitchell was getting fit and warming into the fullback role he goes down for the season. Ouch! Johnston is the likely replacement, but Allan is a viable option. Gagai should return in the centres. The Storm lose Asofa-Solomona and Seve, while Kenny Bromwich and Eisenhuth are some chance of lining up. The Storm haven't spent a lot of time in Sydney this season, and they haven't enjoyed it when they were there. Three losses from four games, all against top four sides (Panthers, Roosters, Eels). The Rabbitohs aren't in the top four but showed us why they should be with a comprehensive demolition of the Eels. A top four finish isn't beyond them, and that game against the Chooks in the final round could be all important. The Storm are a very warm favourite (as they usually are), but I'll take the Bunnies who are looking pretty switched on after their coach had his little bubble break.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result – Storm 22 defeated Rabbitohs 16

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

I doubt the Titans have started favourite in a game all season, but they do here (albeit barely). The Bulldogs are clearly still trying, knowing full well that they are better than the Broncos and need one solitary win to avoid the spoon, so they'll put everything into this. That said, the Titans have won their last five games against teams outside the top eight, and even some of their losses against the top eight teams (Panthers and Roosters) have been competitive. They finished strongly against the Dragons while the Bulldogs limped to the finish against the Raiders, and the Titans have had extra time to prepare for this.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result – Titans 18 defeated Bulldogs 14

Manly Sea Eagles vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – Lottoland

The mathemagicians will tell you that the Sea Eagles or the Tigers could still make the top eight this season, but it's all wizardry and smoke and mirrors. In reality, they are stuck in that dreadful no-mans land where they are out of the running but safe from the wooden spoon. It leaves you with little to play for, but at least Manly can try and give their rusted on fans at Brookvale a win on a Saturday night. Injuries have not been kind to either side, but the Manly forward pack looks strong. Note than Benji is still in the official team lists, but I assume he will be replaced by someone (Reynolds).

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Tigers 34 defeated Sea Eagles 32

Canberra Raiders vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

This was always going to be the game of the round, and how it ended up scheduled on a Saturday night is beyond me, but it just got a lot more interesting with the return of the biggest acronym in sport. SBW has been named on the interchange, and it will be interesting to see how the Roosters use him. The general consensus is he'll play at lock, shifting to an edge back-row role for the finals as his match fitness improves. He's not the player he once was, but he creates plenty of interest. Perhaps more importantly, Luke Keary returns for the Chooks. They've scored 96 points in their last two games, and he can only improve them in attack. Clearly this is a tougher challenge than recent outings, but a threepeat isn't beyond them (which is freaking unbelievable when you think about it). For the Raiders, Jack Wighton continues to blossom, and has to be in contention for the Dally M this year. I'm gutted this game isn't on a Sunday afternoon, but what a game.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Roosters 18 defeated Raiders 6

New Zealand Warriors vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Central Coast Stadium

Does anyone else think Todd Payten has beautiful eyes? No? Just Ms Thinker then huh! Anyways I keep telling Ms Thinker this bloke can coach and she just keeps scrolling through images of him on her ipad in bed. I might have to grow a beard and keep the lights off. In a year that has really tested us all and, to borrow a phrase from the French, been pretty shit, the New Zealand Warriors have given us that one glint of joy and sunshine. They probably can't make the top eight, but sheesus mcsneezus how good would it be if they did? I learned today that Warriors players on loan from other clubs can't play against those clubs, so George Jennings and Daniel Alvaro have to sit this one out. The Eels went from keeping the Storm on zero to getting stuck on zero themselves. I think they can bounce back with a win here - not a win that says their campaign is on track, but enough to keep them in contention for the top four.

Verdict – Eels by 1

Result – Eels 24 defeated Warriors 18

North Queensland Cowboys vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday night – Queensland Country Bank Stadium

The Cowboys are on quite the losing streak at the moment, and they'll be desperate to win this because the two games that follow for the Cowboys look like losses. They have been better at home, but still losing, and I fear we might see more of the same here. The Dragons will be desperate after letting the two points slip in the final five minutes against the Titans in round sixteen. A little like the earlier game on Sunday I suspect. The Dragons won't be convincing, but they'll get the points.

Verdict – Dragons by 4

Result – Cowboys 23 defeated Dragons 22

Evening Tigger - will be a better game than some predict.
Best of luck mate.

You might like to know, that the new maximum security at our gaol, was opened today. Its back to the bad days, as we once were. I saw it on the tv and looks a modern feature.

Cheers and keep well - Big Pete

ScottySeahawk's picture

Cheers Big Pete. Yeah I still don't really follow any particular team but I just love the game of league like everyone else! I'm a huge NFL & NHL fan, hence the Seahawks name haha. But i love my league! I'm an Aucklander but I now live in Wellington NZ. Trying out engage more with the people on the site, good to be a part of this. Cheers Pete

Evening Mark - a good topic you have raised with MJ. Great entertainer in their days as Jackson 5. Then as years rolled by, La Toya steals the news when she posed.
But MJ made that Thriller album, which would be one of the fastest sellers that ever got released and still a great entertainer. MJ had the hots for Diana, but there was a major difference in years. You know, Diana wanted all white husbands and maybe that was the reason Michael started turning a paler shade of pale.

Keep well mate and keep humming.
Big Pete

Great to hear back from you Scotty and great to have you as part of us.
Steely won't be on his own in communicating from over The Shaky Isles.
Do you follow the round ball code in soccer or The NZ Nix?
If so, do you also follow EPL in UK, or any American team being a huge NFL/NHL fan.
I do state that I love LA Lakers in NBA and always have!

Until next chat - keep well mate
Big Pete.

ScottySeahawk's picture

Hahaha agreed, Pete. That Steel fulla isn't all on his lonesome haha. Since I moved to Welly I started following the Nix a lot, still yet to get to a game here though! Had a great season. I used to be a huge Man U & football fan growing up but honestly mate that sport is just full of too much theatrics and drama now. After watching it happen and all the players diving etc I stopped watching. Became a joke sadly. Love the Lakers mate, classic NBA team. Cheers bud.

Gr8 Scotty - I'm Red Devils through and through and goes back to my much younger days, of when the late George Best was playing.
That bloke was poetry in motion!
Panthers in front of Broncs 8-7 in 34th minute.

Speak again over weekend - whenever and do keep well.

Scotty seabawk no it certainly wasn't me that posted that comment i have never heard of them & my father is from tauronga but he has been here a very long time ...

Improvement by the broncos but panthers were always going to win

newbie from perth's picture

@ Butcher
Yeah, I too would prefer a fit Victor Radley playing instead of SBW. Nothing against Sonny but Victor is a hard, fearless match-winner in my book and we need him back desperately. As I mentioned in my comments this week, Tupouniua is my new “current” favourite player but only because Victor is out. Can’t wait until next year when Victor gets back on the paddock 💪.

Borrowing from what Tiger said, I’ve always believed that the longer you keep winning, the closer you get to losing (and visa-versa). My perfect scenario …. The Panthers keep winning and reach the GF against my BBB and then the Roosters inflict that eventual Panthers’ loss. Harsh I know but still … 😉

@ Big Pete
Stoked the Mighty Gunners have added the Community Shield to their FA Cup for 2020. Seems we do better playing in empty stadiums. Happy days indeed 😍. Cheers.

OK, I’m outta here. Peace 🐔 💖 🐔 💖 🐔 💖 🐔 💖

Morning All

I'm feeling bloody stupid(more than normal Butcher) this morning after putting my tips in yesterday. I didn't realise that I had made a mistake with the Broncos/Panthers match until I checked in at half time and saw Mary's comment.

Can't believe that I made that rookie mistake but that id how the cookie crumbles. Will have to snare a few upsets next week.

Have a great Friday everyone

Tiger

Tiger stuffed up his tips
Rocket isn’t posting
Got tread carefully the genie reckons I’ve only got 1 left.

tigerholic's picture

Hey Butcher
I didn't realise that you were still tipping, I didn't think to look that far down the ladder, remember that old chestnut of a saying"nothing ventured, nothing gained:.

Tiger
You’re right I started going for the upsets after falling behind and usually you jag one here and there but they’d get in front and get run down. You have to have a bad year now and then.
I’m coming 2nd in AFL go figure.
Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame. If you win I may become a follower so then you can use the word “couple”.
But your only as good as the present and right now I’m one up on you.
PS I took the tigers.

@ ScottySeahawk
Sorry mate, I thought you were a Manly supporter. Your avatar must’ve thrown me. Obviously you’ll need to ignore my previous post regarding belated birthday presents and such 😁.

I noticed you don’t really follow any NRL team as such but if you ever felt like it you could always get on the Roosters buddy 😉. Have a good one.

Not that it really matters but I’m a 49’er and always will be. Arsenal in the EPL and Chicago Bulls in the NBA.

OK, breakfast is beckoning on this fine and crisp Perth morning. Peace 🐔 💖 🐔 💖 🐔 💖

BigPeteBx's picture

Its ok Newbie - I'll throw Scotty a line for the featheries....hahaha.
No doubt you need to let him know that you follow The Eagles in AFL.
Mate - u cant get away from me quick enough today - can you.

Cheers and keep well - Big Pete

Christine's picture

Manyana how are you coping with your fractured vertebre keep us informed by posting when you can you shouldn't move around too much i knew somone that had done that but it was her neck & she had to wear a neck brace that was metal to limit her movements ...

Rocket Ryan's picture

I'm still here butcher but I'm suffering and identity crisis I feel like a Parramatta follower from the last few years beaten every week like I stole something waiting for the next big drama to unfold what a year you haven't supplied any horse shit for ages my business has gone bust
now I'm starting to feel like a Blues Origin follower from that era
And that unfortunately is as bad as it can get

Baggy_Gee's picture

True true, I know the feeling Rocket. Good news though, there are at least 4 years of fun and games for the Broncos, and one of those years will involve Ricky coaching, firing everyone, and then leaving to Canberra.

The Butcher's picture

Get used to it Rocket
It doesn’t matter who you get as coach if you don’t have the right players your screwed.
The best two coaches ever had this problem Bennett at Newcastle and Gibson at Cronulla
Your odds on to get Paul Green when at the Cowboys he got a sweet JT
At the Broncos he gets sweet FA.

mark ashford's picture

The Butcher
It's so easy to knock or make fun of the Broncs as they struggle this season. I thought they went ok for a large part of last nights game only going down to the ladder leaders by 13 points. There is a lot of good young talent at the club only needing some non performer old boys to go and a good coach. If it's Greenie I'll be happy with that.

Mary S's picture

Hi Mark,
The Broncos played a 'heck of a lot better' than Sharks did this round.

Cheers,
Mary

Rocket Ryan's picture

Hey butcherboy what's happening with your tips I can't exactly say you're on fire so far here's a tip for you join up become tiger second follower least he gets the favourites up

Guru Craig's picture

He cant be much worse than The Guru this round lol...bloody Dogs were hopeless and The Sharks...far out. Good thing The Guru wasnt too enthusiastic with the tipping lol, still we've got 3 games to go...The Guru is almost ready to bet against himself.

Steel Panther's picture

I tipped the Dogs too. Surely they have to win one at some stage but they are just awful.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Steel
Those who tip the Dogs are akin to those who tip the Broncos, always on a hiding to nothing. Next week the Dogs face Manly who are currently in front of the Tigers so I hope you have a good think about that. Next weeks Broncos/Titans game will show if my team has anything left to save some face. Good luck to your Warriors against the Eels.

Christine's picture

Rocket now your bringing me into it again ,make your comments all you like but leave me out of it rocket ...

Christine's picture

Dame i thought manly had that one ...

mark ashford's picture

Steel
Tigers come back to beat Manly 34/32 really wish I had been able to see that game. The Tiger man will be over the moon and our friend Big Pete will be devastated. Oh well thats footy.

Steel Panther's picture

Hi Mark,
Yea I was watching and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Manly 32-18 up with ten to go and they end up losing!! Sad state of affairs indeed. And I see both table toppers JK & Footy Chick tipped them. Mate I'm throwing in some hopefuls (Dogs). Since I'm so far down the tipping ladder it doesn't really matter. My other hopeful this weekend is the Cowboys to notch a win!!

a's picture

Well the cowboys game this week will show if they want to win another game

Bronco Legend's picture

Eagles had it won but its not over until the fat lady sings and Tigies capitalised on it, looks like im sharing the lead with Jk bubble and Footy chick after round 17 but all good, hope all are well with the covid stuff around and good luck to you all.

Mary S's picture

To all Fathers (or soon to be) out there - I hope you have a great day.

Cheers,
Mary

mark ashford's picture

Mary S
I'm sure most of us males here are fathers so thank you for you good wishes. Must say I feel for those in Melbourne who can't see their Dads today. Also have to say I think those idiots in Melbourne protesting have no respect for the elderly in the community. I chose not to visit my daughter or my son on the Gold Coast due to Covid-19. Instead I had a delightful one hour phone conversation with both of them which was great. A little patience and we will beat this thing.

mark ashford's picture

Steel
If you're watching this game, you must be proud of your team.
Why is it I get the feeling the refs want Parra to win. Your favourite player Nathan Brown has been constantly working players over in the tackle and when one responds he gets sent off. Brown gets nothing after he has yet another brain snap. A very doubtful forward pass denies the Warriors a try.
Sorry Baggy but Brown is a grub and doesn't have to be. He's a great runner of the ball and fierce tackler just needs to get the crap out of his game.

Steel Panther's picture

Sure was watching Mark. Yes very proud of the Warriors. The Warriors of old would have caved at 16 nil down but we are seeing a very different team right now. As the commentators said, worst sin binning in history which resulted in two Para tries in the 10 minutes. Not much else went our way as we were on the end of a lopsided penalty count. The two great tries we scored in the first half took ages to be confirmed by the bunkeras they looked for a reason not to award. You can handle a loss when you see your team fight to the end. Yea Brown's a grub and that was on full display again today.

Guru Craig's picture

Guru is with you there Mark, the refs have had a big impact this round.

NZ were hard done by, incorrect calls cost them the game, Souths should have won, several key game changing calls went with Mel and currently watching the Cowboys...Video ref doing all they can to take this away from NQ...Few NQ players have zero effort in def though..Drinkwater? whats this bloke doing.

a's picture

Finally a win for the cowboys

mark ashford's picture

Seems a shame we are talking about refs with after this round only 3 games to go in the regular season. I don't like knocking refs but fair dinkum the Warriors were robbed today. You would think after all they have put in they would get a tiny bit of the rub of the green but they didn't even get a sniff of it. Shame on you refs and bunker, you broke the spirit of an incredible team hope you sleep well tonight.

Bronco Legend's picture

Broncos need all the help they can get, so sign him up for one year maybe we have to have some new blood.

mark ashford's picture

Bronco Legend
Are you referring to Josh Papalli ? if so I agree he would stiffen up both defense and attack.

tigerholic's picture

Cheers BigpeteBx
I didn't see that result coming, the Tigers defence looked very very soft at times. Hope you are well, thanks for the info about the prison.

Tiger

ScottySeahawk's picture

Newbie - thanks mate but i'll never see myself as a Roosters fan. I would rather support the 49ers ha ha but nice try! Being in the same NFL division, Seahawks & 49ers have a huge rivalry! We also both choked in our last superbowl appearance haha.

Pete- nice mate haha, hope you enjoyed the weekend despite the Sea Eagles choking themselves! Cheers bud

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans,

I am back from the Island (with more fish than I expected). Happy days.

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round 17. Quite a lot of people got 7 from 8 (and I'm amazed how many of you found the Cowboys...well done), but only one of us got a perfect round.

Congrats to NuL1F3, who jagged a second 8 from 8 for the season. Amazing stuff, as I reckon I've only had about 2 perfect rounds in 9 years.

If anyone sees any issues with the tipping ladder just let me know.

I will have my previews and selections for round 18 published tomorrow.

tigerholic's picture

Well done NuL1F3, fantastic effort with two late winners to get the heart rate up'

Tiger

BigPeteBx's picture

Mark - good enough as trounced with that lead and letting Tigs come back at them.
Not the first time they have turned off, or had a breather and found themselves on the backend. They need a good kick up the backend.
Bugger me - fair dinkum. Oh well, at least some of us closer guys, are on the same points and I have Awesome winging in on me.

Cheers Champ and keep well
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

U got me Tigger with that one. I think Eagles packed up and went fishing, with the three of yours that left early. I think the players or club, must have had a wager on this. Chee Kam is a former Manly player and might have arranged a beach party as well.

Keep well Champ
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Evenin Scotty - had a nice weekend apart for that match.
Struth, how could they switch off with that sort of lead. Although its been done before, by teams that didn't want it the most.

Have a good week Champ and keep well
Big Pete

Thank you Mr Thinker Sir, and would you believe it, I once again didn't get my tips into the local radio station's competition in time.

NuL1F3's picture

Thank you Tigerholic :) There were a couple of nail biters, I found the Cowboys game especially enjoyable haha.
