Round six selections

Newcastle Knights vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – Central Coast Stadium

The return of Glenn and Pangai Jnr will see Oates return to the wing after a brief flirtation with pack life. The Broncos will need his bigger body in the backline, with Staggs out for some time with a hamstring issue. Some positive signs for the Broncos as they skipped out to an 18-0 lead last Thursday against a proper team, but that proper team ran them down, and they didn't score another point after the 30 minute mark. The Knights loss to the Storm was more competitive than the scoreline indicates. They should be too strong here, and McCullough will be keen to show his old club a thing or two.

Verdict – Knights by 8

Result – Knights 27 defeated Broncos 6

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs New Zealand Warriors – Friday night – Bankwest Stadium

I'm still not convinced that fullback is the natural habitat for Latrell Mitchell, but he's improving each week. I'm mindful however, that the Bunnies opponent last start wasn't exactly top-notch. This is a sterner test, but as I look through the starting thirteen for the red and greens I keep thinking they'll be winning this. Kodi Nikorima has shown his immense value as a post-Covid playmaker - yet another player the Broncos are wishing they kept in their top pocket. In a round with no easy selections this could be one of the hardest.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 2

Result – Rabbitohs 40 defeated Warriors 12

Penrith Panthers vs Melbourne Storm – Friday night – Campbelltown Stadium

I tipped the Panthers last start...and I was wrong, and I tipped against the Storm last start...and I was wrong. On top of that, the Panthers have a woeful record against the purple machine, losing 18 of their last 20. I might be stupid, but I'm not an idiot.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Panthers 21 defeated Storm 14

Gold Coast Titans vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – Suncorp Stadium

Picking a winner here is like trying to decide whether you'll take your Mum or your sister to the prom. Three team changes last start would give Dragons fans hope that this season isn't over just yet. Dufty at fullback was fantastic, the Norman kicking game in the halves was deft, and Hunt off the bench played with confidence in the dummy half role. I don't want to get carried away here (after all, I am dating my sister), but Dragons.

Verdict – Dragons by 4

Result – Dragons 20 defeated Titans 8

Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Campbelltown Stadium

A couple of sides spluttering along at the minute - they'll both win games here and there but neither of them are looking like top eight candidates right now. I've defaulted to the Tigers with home ground advantage, particularly while the Cowboys have so much experience (Morgan, McLean and Holmes) unavailable.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result – Tigers 36 defeated Cowboys 20

Sydney Roosters vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – Bankwest Stadium

You don't need to be the biggest mind in rugby league to know this is the game of the round. The undefeated Eels take on the back-to-back premiers and current favourite to make it three in a row. The Eels last two victories have been narrow but both were against genuine opponents, and I was particularly impressed with the Eels goal line defence against the Panthers. This is a proper side and a premiership threat. Also note that the two teams the Eels defeated in rounds 4 and 5 are the two teams that defeated the Roosters in rounds 1 and 2. Having said that, the Roosters deliberately held themselves back at the start of this season, and since the season was resurrected they have clearly gone to another level. In three games they've scored 129 points and conceded just 18. To give those figures some context, if they maintained that for a regular 26 round season they would end the year with a points differential of +1332 (not a typo). Last year the premiers had a points differential of +264. Have they actually improved? Current figures would suggest they have.

Verdict – Roosters by 8

Result – Roosters 24 defeated Eels 10

Canberra Raiders vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – Campbelltown Stadium

While it's not the game of the round it's pretty darn good - to my eye these sides look like worthy finalists this year. The Sea Eagles best thirteen are one of the top sides in the NRL, but they are a little short on depth after that. Given the injuries to Taupau and Suli, I'm with the full-strength Raiders.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result – Sea Eagles 14 defeated Raiders 6

Cronulla Sharks vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday night – Bankwest Stadium

There's not a lot to get excited about here, but here's something - both sides have a player by the name of Sione Katoa. I don't know about you, but I think that is pretty bloody amazing. Other than that, this looks a bit of a yawnfest between a team who were bad enough to let the Dragons score 30 points, and a team that gots their pants pulled down several times by the Roosters earlier in the week. I'm with the Bulldogs, who conceded a lot less than 30 points to the Dragons not so long ago. But yawn!!!

Verdict – Bulldogs by 2

Result – Sharks 20 defeated Bulldogs 18

Wally Lewis - round six selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or Thursday morning

  • KNIGHTS vs Broncos
  • RABBITOHS vs Warriors
  • Panthers vs STORM
  • Titans vs DRAGONS
  • TIGERS vs Cowboys
  • ROOSTERS vs Eels

I don't have the figures, but I suspect the Redcliffe Dolphins are in a better financial state than some NRL clubs.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Well in that case we don't want to overburden them, but lets start thinking about it, Perth, PNG , Fiji, Central Coast, Brisbane #2, Sharks, Dragons, Bulldogs, Titans, Redcliffe, Rockhampton, Darwin. There are another 8 teams, all who wouldn't need to find so much money to get started, most of them have good stadiums that can be folded into the mix, a league hungry area, and Fox and Nine get a total of 12 games a weekend to drive ad revenue and viewership.

Sorry all, have had someone pass very close too me so missed last weeks and last nights tipping.

Christine - who's having a go and calling you what you've described?
I appreciated your offer of past posts exchanged, but lets think back to some things of old - OLD DAYS and Quotes.
You said it, "that you have a memory like an elephant" and forget nothing.
Old Day quote used to say, via telephone, "phone trunks and reverse the charges". I'm sure others here have heard that before.
As for hills, Hills District - hmmmmm someone may live there.
But then, that may be The Hills are alive with The Sound of Music.

Either way a noise has been made and not to the detriment of you.

What is this world coming to - another story, but didn't originate from this site and people discussions. There are worse about and they don't happen to be here.

Take it steady, keep well.

Newbie & Baggy
Newbie's suggestion expanded on by Baggy certainly has some merit. Sounds a bit like the English premier league in soccer where under performing face relegation. Not sure what the situation is in NSW but the Q-Cup is currently suspended with no restart date at this time.
Changes would be needed to player contracts saying if the club is relegated then their contract reduces by xx% same for promoted teams except with an increase. This would shake up a few under performing teams.
Can anyone tell me what would Milford do if Siebold dropped him and to where? Just sit on the bench and get his obscene salary?
Surely it's time to introduce performance clauses into contracts.
No I haven't mentioned Broncos, they were rubbish last night.

mark ashford's picture

Bradapple
Sorry to hear of your loss. Hope you and your family are all ok.

Steel Panther's picture

From what I saw tonight and last night Mark, the Broncos & Warriors would get relegated!!

mark ashford's picture

Hi Steel
I know it has it's merits but would surely take years to bring in.
I still think player performance clauses with salary reductions in contracts would go in some way to reduce non-performance.
If the Broncs & Warriors were relegated then that's it for me.
I think I did see a little tongue poked into your cheek!

Morning Folks
Last nights game between Panthers and Storm? Even though I tipped Panthers I still have the following issues. The Storm were awarded around 6-7 ruck infringement 6 again calls, how many did Panthers get-0.
You can't tell me that Melbourne have gone from being the biggest wrestlers and the worst ruck slow downs in the game to being squeaky clean.
Ashley Klein has to be the worst referee going around, I have said this before and I will keep saying it too. Now he is the only ref on the park he can call it all his way or at least be more favourable to any team.
What about when Cam Smith's captains challenge was unsuccessful did you see how he continued to badger the ref, he needed to be sent to the bin for 10 mins for dissent but not old Klein.

Anyway that's my bitch for today, was good to see the Panthers get up. Looking forward to the games tonight.

Have a great Saturday folks

Christine - no probs, I wasn't upset or anything like that.
Just explaining to you how it was. I doubt I need settling down, more here need a bit of that, but it goes on and that's life.
I never responded earlier, as I was on community desk duty earlier today. I never took you to be the stirring type, just one who defends oneself, when on the receiving end.
Keep well - Big Pete

Hey Rocket - have you got the jitters sending that email 4 times?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Its killing me here, it sounds a great clean game with not a lot of ref interference. Two games in two weeks where I am down to the quick.

The Butcher's picture

I finally got to watch the roosters v eels game this morning and it was such high quality I really believe we witness the grand final rehearsal.
Eels supporters should be proud
They are the real deal, They should trouble the Raiders next week and put a further gap between the top two performing teams and the rest of the field.
When Sivo scored and Tedesco went off I was thinking the worst but the roosters showed their class and went on with the job.
The eels defence and their ability to offload was on par if not better than the roosters.
Baggy your in for a good year.

mark ashford's picture

Tigger, yes Tigger you have lost your Tiger name after that rant about Storm and Ashley Klein. I know you don't like anything north or south of your precious NSW despite your domicile here in QLD.
When was the last time Storm got the "rub of the green" (which for those who don't know is a snooker terminology)
Perhaps Tigger you should put on a pair of boots and ref a game?

Baggy_Gee's picture

It was a good game Butcher, my only question was what was the go between Jennings and Keary before the sin binning. I was happy until that moment, I feel that combining both the errors from the first half, and the sin binning really lead to the blow out, and those 4 penalty goals really were points for Jam in the end. I was happy with what I heard and saw in the highlights (curse Saturday football being exclusive to Fox), I think they acquitted themselves well, and as long as they don't mentally drop the ball from this game we can keep marching forward. Pity we gave away 24 points so no longer have the best defense in the league. :(

mark ashford's picture

The Butcher
As you are a Roosters supporter I have to admire your post regarding the Eels effort. Easy to gloat after an almost top of the table win.
I have been on the Gold Coast visiting my beautiful daughter so missed all Saturdays games. Don't think it matters as 2 out of my picks went down. Manly doing well at the moment, Ricky will not be happy.

mark ashford's picture

ANYONE
Can you tell me when the "6 again" call comes into play??
I've watched a few games where players are a bit slow out of a tackle but then hear this whistle thing and the ref signals "6 again" Who decides this is it the ref or the bunker?

Steel Panther's picture

Evening Mark,

From what I understand, the ref decides the tackle restart. I think this rule change is a good one. It's really improved the speed of the game!!

Steel Panther's picture

Baggy,

Really thought your BOYS played well too. Just outclassed in the end.

Of particular interest to me was seeing my favourite Eel up to his usual tricks. Looks like he'll be sitting on his backside again for another couple of weeks.

mark ashford's picture

Steel
If it's the ref then I find it hard to understand as most times play has resumed and the ref is following play. Maybe I'm getting a little old and slow and can't keep up, like most of the players.
What do you think of Steve Kearneys sacking, I'm gobsmacked thought he was doing ok after the resumption of play. Goodness he has 2/2 whereas Siebold has 0/4 who should be sacked?

tigerholic's picture

Mark

Thanks for your valued feedback.

Tiger

Steel Panther's picture

You know I'm a big critic of the Warriors Mark for many a bad decision of the field coupled with to many to mention horror shows on the pitch. This is no exception. Given what Kearney has sacrificed for the club & game by leaving his family & coming to OZ, the sacking is a disgrace. An absolute PR shocker. The Warriors are on a hiding to nothing and to expect improvement, good results within the current climate is a joke. Kearney has a poor roster and is operating in bizarre circumstances but has chalked up a couple of wins. Compare him to McGregor who has a talented squad. Who would you chop? Another dreadful chapter in the club's history.

mark ashford's picture

Tigerholic
You amongst others are one of my favourite people here. I hope you took my post as it was meant with a fair bit of tongue in cheek. If I was a little too hard I apologise just gotta keep you NSW holics in check.
You should be happy your Tiges had a great win.

mark ashford's picture

Steel
I watched our local footy show here today and most were dumbfounded by the sacking. Some said yeah it's ok considering the Warriors results under his leadership. No one mentioned Siebold or Mcgregor despite their poor performance or other local coaches Titans, Cowboys, Sharks or Dogs. I believe the Warrior players were devastated and some threatened to go home. Who made this call?

Steel Panther's picture

I understand the decision to sack Kearney was made by CEO Cameron George in conjunction with the new owners. While I know Kearney's record isn't great I don't think he deserved to be treated like he has been. He's given a lot to the club both as a player & coach and should have at least been allowed to see out the season.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Now on that subject Steel, that tackle hard nothing in it compared to others over the weekend, especially that L. Mitchell tackle. It rode up and was accidentally high, compared to other things he has done, this was a non event. I was slightly annoyed with the penalty against the Raiders this afternoon where the Center fell over and after the event showed the Raiders player not touching him at all. Felt that was a bit of a stitch up. But on your favorite Martian, it sounded worse on radio than it looked on the T.V.

Steel Panther's picture

Yea the tackle wasn't much Baggy. I only raised it because it was him haha. Worst tackle of the weekend was the boy Carrigan from the Broncos on Pearce. An Adam Blair special. I think the gutless late hits like this one really do deserve a sending off.

From what I witnessed tonight your lads should easily dispose of the Raiders next week. They were truly awful but you can't take such a gutsy effort away from Manly who lost two players in the first five minutes then Turbo Tommy in the second half. You'd be proud Big Pete!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
I love your enthusiasm for the Eels and I hope they go deep into the premiership chase. But mate Nathan Brown is nothing less than a thug.
I know you love to defend him but mate I think you're on a losing horse.
Google his past and look at what he has done lately, he has no control over his aggression and will cost you points. Think about it.

tigerholic's picture

Hey Mark

All good here mate, bloody Raiders put in their worst performance of the year to cost me a chance at a perfect round.
Take care mate.

Tiger

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Steely - Big Pete is one-eyed and also proud.
Sharks just defeated Dogs 20-18.

Not nice with Kearney dismissal as he gave his lot to Warriors and NZ.

Derby for you tonight between Liverpool and Everton.
Several of our Arsenal supporters here, as much as a "missing" Pabdul was, didn't have a successful week going down twice. Catchup mid-week to Man City and this morning to Brighton, who scored a late one.

Cheers mate, have a great week and Keep Well.
Big Pete

Baggy_Gee's picture

Not defending him per se Mark, its just out of everything that he has done, an innocent slipper arm is basically nothing, I did think of Voyer as I watch some half back slide into a player who had just scored with his knees and not get pinged. That is what annoys me, some players with history get the rough end of the stick while others get off completely. Foul play is foul play and I think that the best way to deal with it is to remove it from the hands of the refs on the field, and put it into the match review committee. the refs then call the game square (joke ha ha https://youtu.be/hPx2GrOB6Ws?t=180 ) and allow foul play to be decided once the heat has left the moment. Now I'll defend the BOYS till the death, but I am always happy to call a spade a spade, unless you give me a pick.

BigPeteBx's picture

Tiger - cant take from my lads. We did it hard and that last 20mins was pure inspirational, after losing Walker, Parker and Tommy T. Plus we started without Marty Kapow and Moses Suli, so a full fit team on the park, might have seen a higher score.

Sharks got over Dogs tonight 20-18, but Dogs were coming back, but too late with it. Gave me 6 from 8, as I took Dogs for an upset. Not many picked Manly this round, so I doubt there would be any or many perfect 8's.

Cheers, have a good week and keep well.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Tiger - further to my previous post.

I've got a feeling that Islander might have been among the goods, this round.
