Coach - Paul Green

Fun Fact: Cowboys coach Paul Green is a licensed pilot.

Throughout much of the finals series I've been using the first finals clash between the Broncos and the Cowboys as a reference point. It would be a little silly of me to stop now. Last night I watched that game again, and it was the first time I've actually watched it away from the distractions that come with the spectacle of seeing it live. What a game it was. We have two teams in the final that deserve to be there, and two teams that play an entertaining version of the game. Long may they prosper, and if more teams try to emulate their style in the seasons ahead I'll be one happy spectator.

The Cowboys scored seven tries against the Sharks, and five of them were against the Sharks left edge defence. Of the other two, one was a cross field kick and the other was through the middle (but again they were heading to the left edge defence before straightening the attack. The Cowboys scored six tries against the Storm, and three of them were against the Storms left edge defence. Of the other three, one was a cross field kick, one was from a chargedown and one was on the other side of the paddock when the game was already run and won. It's no secret they'll go their again, but will it work?

The Cowboys threw plenty at the Broncos left edge defence in the first week of the finals. They had more ball and more opportunities, but they scored just once through that corridor, and it took a grubber kick to do so. In that game they had 57% of the possession, made 400 more metres with the ball and made 50 less tackles - and with all that the Cowboys managed one solitary line break. There is nothing wrong with the Cowboys attack - they made six line breaks against the Storm and ten against the Sharks. The Cowboys are a great attacking side, but to get through the Broncos line you have to be greater than great. They can lift to another level, but they'll need to.

Wayne Bennett has made no secret of the fact that most of his time at the Broncos this season has been spent on getting their defence right. It was only after their narrow loss to the Roosters in round 24 that Bennett was satisfied that the team had their defence where he wanted it. Only then did Bennett start working on attacking structures at training. A few days later they took on the Rabbitohs in Sydney...and scored 47 points. Have another look at the Broncos third try against the Roosters last Friday night if you can. It looks spontaneous, but I'll bet my first born that's a structured play from Bennett...and it's brilliant.

The Cowboys conceded two tries to the Storm last week through the middle corridor. They conceded two tries to the Broncos in their 16-12 loss through the middle corridor. This is where the game will be won. Can those big Cowboys forwards contain those dynamic Broncos halves?

A few other important things to note - theoretically this is neutral ground, but I think we can assume the Cowboys will have the weight of support from the crowd. They haven't won a premiership yet, and the affection for Jonathan Thurston seems to cross all borders. Those in NSW that feel the need to hate clubs outside their state tend to hate the Broncos more than the Cowboys...it seems. Goal-kicking could prove the difference too, and usually I would say Thurston wins a kicking contest with Parker every day of the week. In recent times the Thurston radar has been imperfect so the edge to the Cowboys on that front has narrowed. Mind you, Thurston could come out and slot them from everywhere - we'll find out on the night.

In the end, I'm tipping the Broncos in what looks like a grand final for the ages. They haven't had to leave Brisbane for five weeks. They've had one extra days rest after the preliminary final plus they didn't have to travel home from Melbourne on the back of it. The back end of the Cowboys season has seen them play at the following locations - Auckland, Melbourne, Townsville, Brisbane, Townsville, Melbourne...and now Sydney. I suppose that means they should be used to all the travel, but I'm looking for an edge and that's where the Broncos may have an edge. It only takes one moment where Tamou, Scott or Taumalolo feel the long season in their legs and those Broncos halves will capitalise. When we call time on season 2015 that may prove to be the difference.

Verdict – Broncos 22 to Cowboys 20

First try scorer - Michael Morgan

Clive Churchill medallist - Ben Hunt

Wally Lewis - Grand Final (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Thursday night or early Friday morning.

Tipping Competition - final results

Evening football fans,

Like many Queenslanders I have spent the weekend in New South Wales, although sadly I didn't make it all the way to Sydney, where I would have witnessed one of the greatest sporting contests we've ever seen in this country. What a game. We all thought it would be good but we were lucky to get one that good.

Plenty of plaudits, and rightly so, for Jonathan Thurston, but a standing ovation for Michael Morgan with a pass to tie the match in the dying seconds...and what a pass. To get into that position and then nail the offload.....wow!

Kudos to the Broncos, who led for nearly every minute of the game. Commiserations to Ben Hunt, a man who had a breakout season but has ended the campaign in the worst way possible - three critical errors (a lifting tackle/penalty, losing possession in a one on one strip and then the fumble from the extra time kick-off). Nowhere to hide sadly.

It's worth noting the television audience for this game, which peaked at 4.4 million nationwide. That's half a million more than the AFL grand final...and most of the experts were tipping a smaller audience without a Sydney side in the contest. The experts, as they so often are in this extraordinary game, were wrong.

Now to the season tipping comp, where we had already established our first and second place getters, but third place went down to the wire. And of course Footy Chick and Nik had to tie for third, leaving poor old Thinker with the task of determining a winner. In the end I've given the prize for third to Nik, who correctly tipped the winner and margin in the grand final. Commiserations Footy Chick....hopefully you understand that I had to find a winner somehow.

Tigerholic and Mark A have claimed the footy jersey and the polo shirt as prizes. Nik you can choose a $25 bonus bet from William Hill or a club footy. Let me know what you would like by sending me an email and I shall organise.

Special thanks to the Coach Potato, whose contributions to the site have been both peerless and thought-provoking. Thank you also for running the finals comp. I suppose I better check to see who won and track them down. There's a footy in it for somebody.

And thank you to you all for being here and contributing to the success of the site. It would be pretty ordinary without you. This season we had more than 750,000 visits - nearly a quarter of a million more than in season 2014.  Not too bad at all for a humble little footy tipping site.

Thanks also to my little helper, whose tireless work behind the screens goes mostly un-noticed. Of course, not being noticed is the sign of a well-run website I say. Well done sir....let's drink scotch and celebrate shall we?

We'll be back again for season 2016 and yes, for those that are interested I will post my Melbourne Cup preview later in the spring.

Thank you all. Good night and good luck.

I hate Qld. Nothing changes but that was just the best.

Seeing Hodges lose in the last second. Gold

Baggy_Gee's picture

Shattered, until you pointed the Hodge thing out. Still disappointed, so much disappointment. But one team had to win and I still wouldn't have been overjoyed.

Tailspin, a, and other Cowboy fans, copied for your convenience. .... Come back to this post after full-time when you think you are still dreaming, and play the song. You'll never hear anything ring truer.

(Pump up the last verse)

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesise with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still to spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside and it's ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticise
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
Your old road is rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

Seriously Thinker. tonibet says Cowboys by 1 in O/T. There's gotta be a prize for that

Baggy_Gee's picture

Is that your way of pointing out that next year that the BOYS are going to get their act together and put up a good showing? Thinking that some of the top eight may have the Manly's next season.

Coach Potato's picture

And Chooks, the Panthers Grand Final game ball is yours !!!!

Unless you want a Rooster's.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Come on Coach, It was an Eels ball up for the winner.

Coach Potato's picture

go GAZ. Warm beer is on you.

Hey Baggy, 2 premiership now to JT. Is that enough?

Remember Wally couldn't find one.

Holy crap! This is what footy’s all about and why I love it!

Would have to be the best grand final I’ve ever had the privilege to watch.

Watching this made my hangover and heartbreak from yesterday disappear. Yee-Hah!

Well done Cowboys. Well done JT. Best on ground as well! Awesome!

Coach Potato's picture

Nah. Give him a Brisbane one. They're going cheap

Baggy_Gee's picture

This time it counts, He was the difference between the teams, I will never say that he isn't an incredible player, one of the best. But not a fan, sorry JT, you wouldn't be part of my meet anyone in the world list.

Coach Potato's picture

Luvvin this Broncos funeral procession

Baggy_Gee's picture

Really, he just won, don't bring him down with a Bronco's ball. Maybe with a JH signature would make it better.

Coach Potato's picture

I feel like jumping on a plane to Townsville, even though I bloody hate ya guts

Baggy_Gee's picture

The party won't stop till long after the Cows get home. Remember Robbie vanished for 3 days after last years origin win. Party hard dude's, you deserve it.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Good news for NSW as well, World club challenge, Australia test teams and the nines to keep the Cows on the go.

Coach Potato's picture

Thanks christine. Hey Thinker Nik said Cowboys by 1 too. Although he took an each way bet and didn't put it out there about normal time or extra time. tonibet was super spot on.

Engineer Pete's picture

The only disappointment about that great game is it was played in NSW.
Two great teams and a fantastic performance by both.

AJ's picture

Wowseers what a game! !!! Best ever GF i have watched! Thanks thinker and coach and everyone, really enjoyed being part of the finals comp and everyone's comments. ... lotsa fun :))

Coach Potato's picture

Disappointing comment to finish Pete, you would rather 50000 obnoxious Broncos fans over 83000 true supporters of the game.

Not gonna say any more on this. Don't need the moment spoilt by rubbish

.. "So I say the times, they are a-changing. It's time for a Cowboys victory, and using the same stone, it's gonna give the Broncos that taste they haven't ever savoured. It's gonna hurt Broncos. More than you ever imagined possible."

Not a bad forecast either if I reckons.

No amount of prescription drugs is touching that indescribable pain, eh Broncos?

Ben Hunt, Jack Reed, and half the team, you're obviously not from Balmain I see? Cry babies.

mark ashford's picture

Congrats to "a" and tailspin and any other cows supporters out there.
Would love to have seen my Broncs do it but there you go.
Coach you are a miserable son of a bitch and I look forward to continuing our disagreements next year. Perhaps you could spend a little time on picking some winners rather than all those "I know it all stats"
NOW this is my last post for 2015.
Johnnie Ray thanks mate for all the laughs.
Whoops Tigerholic you should have been first for your great picking, well done mate on winning the comp!
Newbie from Perth... mate you're not a newbie you're our new Guru
Sorry he's not here but you fill his shoes well...keep those one liners coming.
Would love to mention everyone individually but would probably leave someone important out so it's a very big thank you to all involved, this site is amazing....can we all please be back here next year to do it all again.
My last thoughts for 2015 are with CHRISTINE about this time last year she lost her mom and was assaulted by that horrendous MS. CHRISTINE was also abused by some posters here and that was not right.
So to CHRISTINE it's be cool , get well and mate the serious people here love you and wish you well.
Look forward to hearing from you in 2016
Thank you Thinker & TLH

Baggy_Gee's picture

Enjoy the off season all. 6 months to get everyone ready for the next assault on the peak of the game.

Coach Potato's picture

Was made pretty clear from the start, you win you get to give it, you lose you get to cop it. Nothing personal. Just that those were the groundrules we all agreed to.

Sure my tips have been a lot crap this year. So what? Like not picking the winner of the Melbourne Cup each year, doesn't lose me any sleep.

Cop it on the chin Mark. The loser doesn't get to have a go back.

a's picture

I wish we could do something in the off season

Steel Panther's picture

Thoroughly enjoyed the Grand Final last night. A deserved win to the Cowboys who had a never say die attitude. Heart breaking loss at the death for the Broncos. Good to see no controversial refereeing decisions. Congrats to a and Tailspin, their beloved team taking out the win. I hope someday to see my Warriors win a Premiership. Maybe 2016?

Congrats too to Tigerholic who comprehensively took out the tipping comp and Mark Ashford for taking out runner up.

It's been a fun season with all my old friends and making new friends. Hope to be invited back next season.

Appreciate this year's invite Thinker. Thanks so much and awesome work in behind the scenes from TLH. Great stuff.

Enjoy the off season everyone. Before we know it it will be the Auckland 9s. A special best wishes to Christine.

Thanks again Thinker!!! All the best

christine 's picture

thanks mark you are a true gentleman but I can never get rid of my ms I will have it the rest of my life & my nuro has confirmed that the type of ms I have is the worst type it's called progression secondary but I have to stay positive it's not going to get worse , they hope to slow down progression when I have infusions next year but not before april & I will only have 1 infusion every 6 months . till then see ya back here next year mark

christine 's picture

To Thinker & TLH It's been great this season ,have a safe off season guys & see you back here for nines

christine 's picture

thanks steel panther I hope you have a great off season to & we will all be back here for the Auckland nines

Clan we do Kelbourne cup this year

a's picture

Can we do Melburne Cup this year is what I meant

Coach Potato's picture

'Opinion' currently at $71, and 'Excess Knowledge' $101. I'm having a bit on those.

All ribbing aside, that really was the most amazing Grand Final I have ever been witness to. As a true Rugby League fan and supporter through the finals series regardless of who's playing, I feel a bit weird that 1991 and 2003 are no longer my favourite. It's now 2015, and not sure if ever that will change.

a's picture

Cowboys are the best

Coach Potato's picture

'a', in finals week 2 when tonibet strangely picked Cowboys to win by 6 in overtime, you corrected him and said ...

Sorry but you can only win by 1 2 or 4 in folders point

Then I had some fun with your spelling mistake and wrote ..

You fold, you lose.
In Folders Point, as in Golden Point, the test is to see which team will fold and which team will not.

Sounds like there was no spelling mistake. Folders point was right. As a matter of fact, looking at the game again, Brisbane folded long before full-time, in particular Ben Hunt. For the last 20 minutes, he repeatedly kicked out over the sideline. Many thought it was a masterstroke running the clock down and giving players a rest. What it now show is that Hunt with time ticking down just couldn't take it any more. He didn't want to play any more. Not one bit. He just wanted it to be over. Those constant kicks out, obviously debatable, but for me, was a sign the pressure was getting to much. He couldn't get rid of the pill fast enough.

Fast forward to extra time, where I was sure Thurston had blundered by winning the toss and choosing to receive. Or did he know something? Could he see that Hunt was shot and wanted the ball kicked to the one who didn't want it in his hands the last 20.

Folders point hey?

Coach Potato's picture

*sorry last paragraph, should read 'thought Thurston blundered by winning the toss and choosing to kick off.

Cowboys will go back to back

Coach Potato's picture

Its not even been 24 hours. No need to get too far ahead. Celebrate 2015.

Penrith won their first after 24 years, beating Canberra, who were going for three premierships in a row. So they beat the best and suddenly thought next year they would dominate. They missed the semis the next 5 years.

As it stands, I wouldn't be surprised if JT is about to call it a day. Either in the coming days , or maybe whenever the next big injury ACL, shoulder, groin etc happens. He looked like he'd gone 12 rounds with Tyson last night. Without him, I don't see how they go back to back.

Tailspin's picture

Hey everyone, well I can tell you that was the trip of a lifetime. The best game I have ever been to bar none, yes and even the origin. Coach you really have no idea how good that was unless you were there. the atmosphere was unbelievable being 2 x QLD sides, both lots of supporters were cheering and clapping everything and everyone you talked to broncos and cowboys supporters just wanted a great game which we were delivered in huge amounts. It was beyond my expectations by far and I went with my mate who is a broncos supporter and he feels the same. and I can guarantee you that there was probably 79000 QLD supporters there and the rest from down south, no matter what the NSW papers say. Thanks for a great year everyone, it's been a long hard road for the cowboys but we got there in the end and i'm as happy as a pig in shit, ye ha, hope to see you all next year. Signing off for 2015, happy days.

Tailspin's picture

P.S. a, keep on keepin on, go the cowboys 2016.

a's picture

Yes go Cowboys for 2016

Coach Potato's picture

Glad it went well.

Only you could answer then, (next year it seems) would you have preferred to be amongst 50000 Qld'ers or 80000?
