Coach - Paul Green

Fun Fact: Cowboys coach Paul Green is a licensed pilot.

Throughout much of the finals series I've been using the first finals clash between the Broncos and the Cowboys as a reference point. It would be a little silly of me to stop now. Last night I watched that game again, and it was the first time I've actually watched it away from the distractions that come with the spectacle of seeing it live. What a game it was. We have two teams in the final that deserve to be there, and two teams that play an entertaining version of the game. Long may they prosper, and if more teams try to emulate their style in the seasons ahead I'll be one happy spectator.

The Cowboys scored seven tries against the Sharks, and five of them were against the Sharks left edge defence. Of the other two, one was a cross field kick and the other was through the middle (but again they were heading to the left edge defence before straightening the attack. The Cowboys scored six tries against the Storm, and three of them were against the Storms left edge defence. Of the other three, one was a cross field kick, one was from a chargedown and one was on the other side of the paddock when the game was already run and won. It's no secret they'll go their again, but will it work?

The Cowboys threw plenty at the Broncos left edge defence in the first week of the finals. They had more ball and more opportunities, but they scored just once through that corridor, and it took a grubber kick to do so. In that game they had 57% of the possession, made 400 more metres with the ball and made 50 less tackles - and with all that the Cowboys managed one solitary line break. There is nothing wrong with the Cowboys attack - they made six line breaks against the Storm and ten against the Sharks. The Cowboys are a great attacking side, but to get through the Broncos line you have to be greater than great. They can lift to another level, but they'll need to.

Wayne Bennett has made no secret of the fact that most of his time at the Broncos this season has been spent on getting their defence right. It was only after their narrow loss to the Roosters in round 24 that Bennett was satisfied that the team had their defence where he wanted it. Only then did Bennett start working on attacking structures at training. A few days later they took on the Rabbitohs in Sydney...and scored 47 points. Have another look at the Broncos third try against the Roosters last Friday night if you can. It looks spontaneous, but I'll bet my first born that's a structured play from Bennett...and it's brilliant.

The Cowboys conceded two tries to the Storm last week through the middle corridor. They conceded two tries to the Broncos in their 16-12 loss through the middle corridor. This is where the game will be won. Can those big Cowboys forwards contain those dynamic Broncos halves?

A few other important things to note - theoretically this is neutral ground, but I think we can assume the Cowboys will have the weight of support from the crowd. They haven't won a premiership yet, and the affection for Jonathan Thurston seems to cross all borders. Those in NSW that feel the need to hate clubs outside their state tend to hate the Broncos more than the Cowboys...it seems. Goal-kicking could prove the difference too, and usually I would say Thurston wins a kicking contest with Parker every day of the week. In recent times the Thurston radar has been imperfect so the edge to the Cowboys on that front has narrowed. Mind you, Thurston could come out and slot them from everywhere - we'll find out on the night.

In the end, I'm tipping the Broncos in what looks like a grand final for the ages. They haven't had to leave Brisbane for five weeks. They've had one extra days rest after the preliminary final plus they didn't have to travel home from Melbourne on the back of it. The back end of the Cowboys season has seen them play at the following locations - Auckland, Melbourne, Townsville, Brisbane, Townsville, Melbourne...and now Sydney. I suppose that means they should be used to all the travel, but I'm looking for an edge and that's where the Broncos may have an edge. It only takes one moment where Tamou, Scott or Taumalolo feel the long season in their legs and those Broncos halves will capitalise. When we call time on season 2015 that may prove to be the difference.

Verdict – Broncos 22 to Cowboys 20

First try scorer - Michael Morgan

Clive Churchill medallist - Ben Hunt

Wally Lewis - Grand Final (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Thursday night or early Friday morning.

Tipping Competition - final results

Evening football fans,

Like many Queenslanders I have spent the weekend in New South Wales, although sadly I didn't make it all the way to Sydney, where I would have witnessed one of the greatest sporting contests we've ever seen in this country. What a game. We all thought it would be good but we were lucky to get one that good.

Plenty of plaudits, and rightly so, for Jonathan Thurston, but a standing ovation for Michael Morgan with a pass to tie the match in the dying seconds...and what a pass. To get into that position and then nail the offload.....wow!

Kudos to the Broncos, who led for nearly every minute of the game. Commiserations to Ben Hunt, a man who had a breakout season but has ended the campaign in the worst way possible - three critical errors (a lifting tackle/penalty, losing possession in a one on one strip and then the fumble from the extra time kick-off). Nowhere to hide sadly.

It's worth noting the television audience for this game, which peaked at 4.4 million nationwide. That's half a million more than the AFL grand final...and most of the experts were tipping a smaller audience without a Sydney side in the contest. The experts, as they so often are in this extraordinary game, were wrong.

Now to the season tipping comp, where we had already established our first and second place getters, but third place went down to the wire. And of course Footy Chick and Nik had to tie for third, leaving poor old Thinker with the task of determining a winner. In the end I've given the prize for third to Nik, who correctly tipped the winner and margin in the grand final. Commiserations Footy Chick....hopefully you understand that I had to find a winner somehow.

Tigerholic and Mark A have claimed the footy jersey and the polo shirt as prizes. Nik you can choose a $25 bonus bet from William Hill or a club footy. Let me know what you would like by sending me an email and I shall organise.

Special thanks to the Coach Potato, whose contributions to the site have been both peerless and thought-provoking. Thank you also for running the finals comp. I suppose I better check to see who won and track them down. There's a footy in it for somebody.

And thank you to you all for being here and contributing to the success of the site. It would be pretty ordinary without you. This season we had more than 750,000 visits - nearly a quarter of a million more than in season 2014.  Not too bad at all for a humble little footy tipping site.

Thanks also to my little helper, whose tireless work behind the screens goes mostly un-noticed. Of course, not being noticed is the sign of a well-run website I say. Well done sir....let's drink scotch and celebrate shall we?

We'll be back again for season 2016 and yes, for those that are interested I will post my Melbourne Cup preview later in the spring.

Thank you all. Good night and good luck.

After last week the Cows should run at Jack Reed's side. Twice he dropped off one on one tackles on Blake Ferguson which cost tries......

The Thinker's picture

Steel P,
That is exactly where they are heading

The White Pearl's picture

Agreed that the Cowboys will target Reed's side however Jack defended half a metre closer to the MILF against the Roosters than he normally would as Broncos were worried about RTS - Lachlan Coote does not provide the same level of threat. Reckon the Broncos will be set up for Morgan on the outside so maybe Feldt or O'Neil cutting back may be an answer to the conundrum of how the Cows with what should be superior possession and metres cross that line...

Tigerholic and Mark Ashford aka prizewinners,
While I still have your attention. If you can get in touch with me regarding your tipping comp prizes that would be super.

Tiger...you can choose between a free $200 bonus bet with William Hill (providing you are 18+) or an NRL footy jersey of your choosing.

Mark...you can choose between a free $75 bonus bet with William Hill (providing you are 18+) or an NRL polo shirt of your choosing.

As for third place, it's between Footy Chick and Nik...so we'll have to wait and see. I'll track them down along with the winner of the Coach comp.

If you don't have a William Hill account and would like to open one (you need an account if you want the bonus bet prize) here is the link:

Get in touch with me via email at heythinker@the-thinker.org and I'll start organizing things. Congratulations to you both.

Just got surprised by hubby, tickets to GF. Yay! Can't wait. Was on bucket list. First time to GF. Any advice for a first timer?

Coach Potato's picture

Every team in this comp has tasted Grand Final defeat except for two, well, technically, three.

#Broncos have never lost a Grand Final.
#The only dance floors the Titans have seen are in Cavill Avenue.
#..and Technically Wests Tigers have never lost one, although Wests and Balmain definitely have.

But every other team has. There's really no pain like it. It can't be replicated either. It cant be replicated in junior footy days, Holden Cup etc. Nothing replicates the First Grade Grand Final loss. And the pain lasts a long long time. It lingers. It was the reason I feared the Sharks through this year's finals series. 48 years with no prize but more importantly 42 years of pain since their first Grand Final loss. That's two whole generations that thing has lingered inside the Shark without being excorsised.

When two teams that have only known Grand Final pain and suffering came up against each other finals week 2 this year, it felt a lot like, for the winner, whoever it may be, it was their turn this year to turn tears into cheers. The Cowboys won that duel in emphatic style. They blew their smoking guns, back into holsters, and ready for the next duel, did matter who. They were standing up to say this time we're not feeling that Grand Final pain this time. Not again.

So Broncos on the face of it, deserved favourites, (although pre-judiciary hearing, Cowboys were actually favourites!), still, there's one thing that the Broncos, as a team, don't have to spur them on. That feeling that cant be replicated.

Granted, only Thurston was there to suffer in 2005, but his pain easily circulates through the arteries of each player beside him, and the whole squad know the pain of the fans for the last ten years of a one team region.

So I say the times, they are a-changing. It's time for a Cowboys victory, and using the same stone, it's gonna give the Broncos that taste they haven't ever savoured. It's gonna hurt Broncos. More than you ever imagined possible.

This is a little weird because its Tracy Chapman showing pics of Bob Dylan but the intro ad is great viewing. It's showing me face-timing Footy Chick!!

Tailspin, a, and other Cowboy fans, come back this post after full-time when you think you are still dreaming, and play the song. You'll never hear anything ring truer.

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesise with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still to spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside and it's ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticise
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
Your old road is rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

Hi all
Like our mentor THE THINKER I'm going for my Broncos.
Not worried about Jack Reids defense. I think throughout the year he has proved himself pretty safe and he can get to the line.
The Broncs will ALL stand up but for mine the Bennett factor is the decider.
Thinker and TLH thanks for all your support and kind words this season.
I'm not a betting man so would prefer the NRL polo BUT if it's a problem getting it to me (I live on Bribie Island) please feel free to give the voucher to a worthy poster...your choice.
So it's the Broncos by 8
If the Cowboys win I will be just as happy as they are my second team.
Either way this will be a fast and exciting game.
So all you Thinker fans sit back and enjoy...I will.

Awesome. And here we all are now. It's all lead up to this, Grand Final. Queensland V Queensland. Cowboys V Broncos. Man Vs Horse. It's easy dewc on who to go for in this game but not so easy if you're centaur ! It's destiny calling. Cowboys by eight. Go Cowboys ! ;-D

The Thinker's picture

Mark,
Bribie Island isn't a problem - nice part of the world you're living in.

If the Broncos win I'll find a 2015 Premiers polo or something similar for you. If they don't I'll find the next best thing.

Coach Potato's picture

.. I guess the next best thing to a Broncos Premiers polo must be a Broncos Runners-Up polo?

Thank the footy gods that Shayne Hayne has taken his stamp off this year's finals and no Hayne stamp left on the big one.

Still, Patten certainly doesn't guarantee a dud-call free game.

At least the Panther is a friggin Panther.

The Thinker's picture

Jazzy,
Nice work from your hubby there....well done.

I must admit I haven't been to a grand final yet, so I can't offer much advice for you there.

I was watching the Cowboys/Storm game with some friends who booked their trip once they knew the Cowboys were going to be there - the airlines and hotels certainly don't miss you if you want to stay in Sydney this weekend.

Jazzy's picture

No wonder Qantas are back in the surplus - price gouging to the max. Can't afford flights so we are driving. Staying at Taree on the way down and Grafton on the way back. Cheapest night stay in Sydney anywhere near the stadium was at Parramatta for $260. Probably be the only time we will ever get to go to GF (unless of course it comes to QLD in the future).

I am predicting field goals from both teams in this game.

Enjoy the weekend sport in whatever capacity or code! Love Sept/Oct for sport in Australia!

I checked out the archives Thinker and I see you've tipped three of the four Grand Finals since you set up this site in 2011. Only blip on the radar is your 2013 GF tip of Manly to beat the Roosters with the Chooks prevailing.

Not that it will make any difference other than having the winner finish on the nice number of 10, but the big one is worth 3.

Could I also ask to play this week in the right spirit, meaning "pick and stick". Afterall, its just a bit of fun.

It's been a hard day's drive back from Dubbo. I'm thinking that the 2015 premiers should be Parramatta to beat the Panthers by the length of the football field. Since that's not going to happen, Broncos by 13. It's been a good year of football and with a full off season a lot of our boys are going to be firing for next year. Let us see a good clean game and at the sound of the bell come out fighting. LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE. (or if you rather the other Buffer) IT'S TIME!

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Well here we are, last game of the year. D’oh! What to do? What to do? I’m consoling myself with being able to watch some NFL, mainly 49ers games. Looking forward to developing a routine whereby I record the 3 games each week and watch them sometime during the next few days thereafter. If anyone’s interested, “live” coverage is on 7mate every Monday morning at 1am and goes through to 7.30am. This is WST so you’ll have to adjust for local time accordingly. Then again, you could always just look it up on your EPG eh? Anyhoo, onto the Grand Final…

Cowboys by 8

I’ve read the Boss’ preview of the game and I’m as unsure as ever. Both sides have a good case for hoisting the trophy and both sides have weaknesses that may or may not be exploited. Being the “newbie” that I am, I reckon I should just go with “gut feeling” and tip who I’d like to see win. Seeing as Bris-Vegas have been there and done that and seeing as the Cowboys have been robbed of grand finals in past years (so I’m led to believe), I’m gonna have to tip the Cowboys for Sunday. Sometimes fairytales do come true and it would be pretty awesome if the Cows could do it for their fans and especially for JT. God knows he’s a deserving case.

Good luck to all you Cowboy fans out there and if you’re crying after the game, I hope they are tears of joy! Nothing better than seeing your side win their first grand final. I speak from experience here people, albeit with the West Coast Eagles in ’92 when they got their first. Then again, I also cried in 2006 as well but that was due to the heartbreak of the previous year (we were robbed in that one) and far too much Johnny Walker Red I’m afraid. Here’s hoping we can make our own AFL “fairytale” come true on Saturday. Win, lose or draw I’ll be happy (and very very drunk).

OK, in closing I just want to say a BIG “thank you” to the Boss, the Boss’ Little Helper and all you guys who made this year such a great one. Special mentions to Johnny Ray for his comedy and great video links. To the Coach for his thought provoking insights, stats and commentary that got everyone talking and fired up. To our friend “a” for his undying passion for his beloved Cowboys. To Tigerholic, mark ashford and Footy Chick for smashing it in the tipping competition. Big Ups to Panther and Baggy as well. Bravery Award this year goes to Christine. Good onya Chris! And last but not least to my brother Shanghai for finally “getting involved” this year. It was fun wasn’t it bro’?

Good luck to your mob if they’re still in the “hunt” and here’s hoping we get to see some great footy. Cheers.

P.S. Thought I’d go out with a bang this week…

1. If a glassblower inhales, does he get a pane in the stomach?

2. Is a pessimist's blood type B-negative?

3. Does the Little Mermaid wear an algebra?

Bring back the Guru! Peace…

Just wanted to thank the Thinker and the Thinker's Little Helper for a great year and a great competition, would also like thank all those who were a part of the tipping comp, Coach you must have worn out a few keyboards with all your posts, I did enjoy the content and at some point I realised how you put ideas and thoughts about results in peoples heads and I realised then to read your posts and then forget them if I was going to be a chance.

I look forward to next years competition and I hope everyone returns for another go, thanks again and enjoy the GF.
