Sydney Roosters vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – Allianz Stadium
These sides met in round 21, and what started as a Roosters romp turned into one of the games of the year. The Chooks flew the boxes and raced to a 22-0 lead. Then they switched off (or did the Bulldogs switch on?), and the Bulldogs hit the front with ten minutes to go. The Chooks switched on again (or did the Bulldogs switch off?), scoring three tries in the last ten minutes to prevail 38-28. Both sides experienced periods in that game when they absolutely dominated their opponent. With that, both teams should head into this game knowing they can win if they keep the switch on for more than 40 minutes. The minor premier doesn't tip out in the first two weeks of the finals very often but I'm leaning to an upset. Pearce comes back but that halves combination may not necessarily click straight away, and Hastings has been tremendous. Reynolds and Mbye hardly set the world on fire for the Bulldogs last week but they should be better for the run. The Roosters will try and speed this game up and the Bulldogs will try and slow this game down. Hasler got a chance to observe how the Storm did just that one week ago. Providing the Dogs forwards don't get run off their feet they can win this, particularly with Jared Waerea-Hargreaves unavailable for the tri-colours. Note that in the round 21 clash, JWH carted the ball for 238 metres. The Chooks have done well without him, but I feel his absence could prove the difference. It's a home game for the Chooks, but the Dogs will have plenty of support in the cheap seats. It's either the Chooks by plenty or the Bulldogs by barely enough. Doggies in a close one.
FUN FACT: Roosters coach Trent Robinson played just four club games in his football career. Bulldogs coach Des Hasler played 12 games for Penrith that no-one can remember, and 12 games for his country that no-one can forget.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 2
Result - Roosters 38 def Bulldogs 12
North Queensland Cowboys vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
The Sharks might be rank outsiders on Saturday night but they have beaten the Cowboys twice already this season. The first time the Sharks did so the Cowboys were without co-captain Thurston, and the second time they did it the Cowboys were without their other co-captain Scott. Those are significant omissions, but it's clear the Sharks have a style of game that can trouble the lads from the north. Ennis is free to play and that worries me - he'll be in the face of Thurston all night and he won't be the only one. Even in front of a boisterous Cowboys crowd the men with the whistles may be reluctant to use them. As I've said previously, if Thurston get frustrated his performance drops. The Cowboys need a performance and a half from their forwards on Saturday night. They've had an extra day to prepare for this game which helps, and I'm hoping the home crowd lifts them. There is no doubt that the quality of the Broncos/Cowboys contest was superior to the Sharks/Rabbitohs final. If the Cowboys can maintain that level or improve (and they can improve) they'll be too good. At $3.15 the Sharks are absolutely backable, but I won't be tipping them.
FUN FACT: Cowboys coach Paul Green played for four of the six clubs left in contention, including the two clubs playing on Saturday night.
Verdict – Cowboys by 8
Result - Cowboys 39 defeated Sharks 0
Wally Lewis - finals week two selections (in bold)

Hi all
Cowboys by 8
Roosters by 10
Last week will be a wakeup for the Cows they were good against the Broncs but not quite good enough. As Phill Gould said "one of the best games he's seen this year"
This is their best chance for a flag and I thought the Sharks were pretty ordinary in the second half.
The Sharks best forward is ...you know that big ugly dude...no no not Gal....he's a twin or something...only a mother would love him.
If he's fit then look out Cowboys.
Lets be honest Ennis and others should be sitting out this week but that's the judiciary.
The Roosters have so much attack power across the park, which Storm shut down...won't happen again this week.
As those huge Dog forwards tire watch the Chooks carve them up.
Anyway probably the most I've said all year....Oh Coach can we have one more stoush before it's all over?
Luv Ya
Mark

Surely there's something the Roosters loving media aren't sharing this week. The biggest factor in deciding Friday's game, yet not a boo.
It's Kenny Dowall and his court appearance (set down for tomorrow). To be successful through September surely players need to be 100% focused. If there's a distraction, then that has to have an effect. If that distraction has even the remotest possibility of leading to a criminal conviction (without casting aspersions of course) then that player just can't be focused. Not 100% anyway. How do those set plays go at training? Does it affect the rest of the backline? The rest of the team? I say it must and it will. It's been out of sight out of mind for a while now, but tomorrow it all comes to a head.
No way Roosters can be at their best. They cant be. Ironically we initialise players names like they are a band of superheros - DCE, GI, SBW .... SKD. Truth is, none of them are. All human. All have human failings and frailties. Roosters will show on Friday that they are no different.

Cowboys by 6 (in OT): Sharks prepare for next season.

Ahh tonibet, just before I post your tips, you can't actually win by 6 in overtime. Still 6?
Submitted by Coach Potato on
What a great scenario these two games. Roosters with 13 victories play Bulldogs with 8. Both know what Grand Finals are about and what it takes to win, wanting to do it one more time.
Cowboys and Sharks on the other hand, twist and turn their Rubik's cube puzzle of winning just one, into untold and seemingly unsolvable combinations .. or has one of these teams finally worked it out, finally solved the puzzle. At game's end one team will believe so.
Submitted by a on
Sorry but you can only win by 1 2 or 4 in folders point

You fold, you lose.
In Folders Point, as in Golden Point, the test is to see which team will fold and which team will not.

Hang on Roosters -1912, 1913, 1937. All three Grand Final wins against no opponent!!?! I thought only South Sydney claimed those as being same as the 80-minute version. Obviously not.

Yeah ... For anybody interested the reason why I've gone with Sharks to beat Cowboys this week is because I am quietly confident that this year grand final will be repeat of 1979 Amco Cup Final where Sharks beat combined Brisbane side for title. Man this internet is fascinating you really can find anything you want to know on this thing. I wonder who captain of combined Brisbane side was back then ? Wally Lewis ! Omigod ! I don't care if nobody knew who he was back them, nobody beats team captained by King Wally Lewis, especially when it's team like Sharks. Dude if Cronulla couldn't give me one more good reason to hate them, congratulations, they just did ! God I love to hate Sharks ... :-(

Evening Coach
For those wondering what you are on about regarding the chooks...an explanation of sorts:
1912 and 1913 - at that time the competition only played a 'grand final' in the event that two teams were tied in first place (I have no idea what their plan was if there were a three way tie).
In 1937 they held no finals series so they could accommodate a Kangaroo tour at the end of the season to Europe.

How good were the Sharks of 79. I honestly think they would win the 2015 premiership - if you know what I mean. The year before State of Origin starts, they absolutely slaughter a team that would have 6 QLD Origin players in their lineup - Mal Meninga, Chris Close, Brad Backer, John Lang, Wally Lewis, Norm Carr. (and we all know what they did to NSW that game)

Great to see the old clips, especially Souths - V - Wynnum in 1982. Brings memories back of when I was on a ship in dry dock in Brisbane in 1983 or 1984. First time I had ever been there and I weaseled a day off work and went out to Newman Oval (I think - I had no idea where I was) to watch Mal Meninga play for Souths against The King, who was playing for Valleys (I think - do they or did they play in an all blue strip?) Anyway, it was a huge thrill for a 23 year old rugby league hack from Fremantle to get to see these two stars in the flesh ...... ah, what a day it was
