Sydney Roosters vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – Allianz Stadium
These sides met in round 21, and what started as a Roosters romp turned into one of the games of the year. The Chooks flew the boxes and raced to a 22-0 lead. Then they switched off (or did the Bulldogs switch on?), and the Bulldogs hit the front with ten minutes to go. The Chooks switched on again (or did the Bulldogs switch off?), scoring three tries in the last ten minutes to prevail 38-28. Both sides experienced periods in that game when they absolutely dominated their opponent. With that, both teams should head into this game knowing they can win if they keep the switch on for more than 40 minutes. The minor premier doesn't tip out in the first two weeks of the finals very often but I'm leaning to an upset. Pearce comes back but that halves combination may not necessarily click straight away, and Hastings has been tremendous. Reynolds and Mbye hardly set the world on fire for the Bulldogs last week but they should be better for the run. The Roosters will try and speed this game up and the Bulldogs will try and slow this game down. Hasler got a chance to observe how the Storm did just that one week ago. Providing the Dogs forwards don't get run off their feet they can win this, particularly with Jared Waerea-Hargreaves unavailable for the tri-colours. Note that in the round 21 clash, JWH carted the ball for 238 metres. The Chooks have done well without him, but I feel his absence could prove the difference. It's a home game for the Chooks, but the Dogs will have plenty of support in the cheap seats. It's either the Chooks by plenty or the Bulldogs by barely enough. Doggies in a close one.
FUN FACT: Roosters coach Trent Robinson played just four club games in his football career. Bulldogs coach Des Hasler played 12 games for Penrith that no-one can remember, and 12 games for his country that no-one can forget.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 2
Result - Roosters 38 def Bulldogs 12
North Queensland Cowboys vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
The Sharks might be rank outsiders on Saturday night but they have beaten the Cowboys twice already this season. The first time the Sharks did so the Cowboys were without co-captain Thurston, and the second time they did it the Cowboys were without their other co-captain Scott. Those are significant omissions, but it's clear the Sharks have a style of game that can trouble the lads from the north. Ennis is free to play and that worries me - he'll be in the face of Thurston all night and he won't be the only one. Even in front of a boisterous Cowboys crowd the men with the whistles may be reluctant to use them. As I've said previously, if Thurston get frustrated his performance drops. The Cowboys need a performance and a half from their forwards on Saturday night. They've had an extra day to prepare for this game which helps, and I'm hoping the home crowd lifts them. There is no doubt that the quality of the Broncos/Cowboys contest was superior to the Sharks/Rabbitohs final. If the Cowboys can maintain that level or improve (and they can improve) they'll be too good. At $3.15 the Sharks are absolutely backable, but I won't be tipping them.
FUN FACT: Cowboys coach Paul Green played for four of the six clubs left in contention, including the two clubs playing on Saturday night.
Verdict – Cowboys by 8
Result - Cowboys 39 defeated Sharks 0
Wally Lewis - finals week two selections (in bold)
Note: tips from Wally will be published on Thursday night or early Friday morning.

Hi everyone,
Newbie is heartbroken his beloved Chooks got beat last week. Oh well, these things happen I suppose. It wasn’t a complete downer though as it was a ripping game and on balance, the Storm deserved to win (even if only by a smidge). At least we have another chance this week.
I did gain a great deal of happiness and enjoyment however when the Mighty Fremantle Roosters won the WARL Grand Final last weekend. The Roosters (NSW counterpart Sydney Roosters) beat the reigning premiers South Perth (NSW counterpart Dragons) 26-10. At least the Tri-Colours have won a Grand Final somewhere this season. It was Freo’s first top grade flag in 18 years. Awesome effort guys, well done!
Anyway, what about those other games last week eh? Man, I was in heaven! The Dogs and Dragons game was an absolute rip-snorter! So too was the Qld Derby. The Sharks game was, well how do I put it? Entertaining? Passable? Whatever it was, it didn’t get me going a hell of a lot. No problem though, a great weekend of footy regardless.
OK, we’re getting closer to the pointy end this week and just 2 games to feed our hunger. Let’s get into it…
Roosters by 12
Even after last week’s effort, I’m still tipping The Mighty Chooks to get the job done this week. When I voiced my concern last week that “the longer you keep winning, the closer you get to losing”, I was hoping for all money that it wouldn’t come true. Unfortunately the football gods decided otherwise. Damn! Surely they won’t punish me 2 weeks in a row, will they?
Cowboys by 10
Based on what I saw last week, the Cowboys standard against the Broncos far outweighed the effort from the Sharks against Souths. I’m thinking a gallant and commendable season from the Sharks must surely come to an end this week. On balance, the Cows have to win this, even if the refs are reluctant to use the whistle when they should do.
Good luck to your mob if they’re still in the “hunt” and here’s hoping we get to see some great footy. Cheers.
P.S. With no particular reference to Friday night’s game …
If you cross a Bulldog with a Shihtzu, would it be considered a Bullshit? Hmmm…

Anyone seen my arse? I just laughed mine off and can’t seem to find it.
“where’s are my pants” was so weirdly funny. Dude, no idea how you come across these “gems” but keep putting them up. It be Newbie’s kind of humour! Awesome!

Hi guys my tips for this week are:
Roosters by 16- Roosters will be too strong even though Pearce isn't playing in this game. The Roosters have played will without Pearce anyway even though they lost last week and needed him otherwise they have played well without Pearce. I think Roosters will be too good and get a big win over the Bulldogs.
And Cowboys by 4- Cowboys in a close one.
Thank you everyone and cheers!!!!!!!!!!+

As always, it seems that everyone is getting the men in pink ready for a tight neck tie. Let them do their job and we'll dissect their performance after the game. Maybe the Cows will not have the ability to win the big game without the crowd pressuring the ref's. They have finally reached the point where JT has to put up or shut up, the problem is that with the team who struggle to win without him and the entire FNQ region he may need a back up, and his back up is slightly broken.

Horrible to see one of the better teams already, get so much help with decisions, no try given green light, forward passes imitating those thrown to Jarryd Hayne given the green light, and leading to more trys. The fact a score is racked up then becomes a defence that the better team won and everyone says all the errors can be overlooked.
I'm really not sure what refs are trying to do when they choose to ignore the rulebook. It's hard to watch. It's wrong. Rules are rules. Players need to honour the rules of this game, why do refs feel they are above it. Above the game itself.
Submitted by Steel Panther on
Coach I agree that the refs have a lot to answer for last night but the Dogs made too many mistakes to deserve to win. Rona and Mbye had nights to forget especially Rona who was poor under the high ball. I've been saying it all season that the Dogs 5th tackle kicking has been a disgrace. Time and time again no pressure created here. Reynolds very guilty in this area.
P.S Wow....I've made it to the bottom of your tipping ladder Coach. I guess this is what happens when you don't pick the favourites.

What a way to start the day. Woke up to the opening match of the rugby world cup. Yes! we lost but still proud of the mighty effort they put in against the hosts. Watch out wallabies!
OK on to rugby league now, I would love for the Roosters to win the premiership twice in three years and hoping Kane Evans will play for Fiji again in the not to distant future, but still that was a NO TRY!
Moving on to tonight's game, is it just me or are the cowboys fans already looking for a excuse (blame the ref) before the game has even begun. Have a little faith in your team guys, and they will deliver.
Submitted by Coach Potato on

Morning all.
I agree with you Coach there were so many forward passes from BOTH teams that for a moment I thought I was watching NFL.
That try??? well the #9 dribblers were miles away and the ref was 3 feet from the action. Gotta give him (the ref) the benefit of being the closest person there. Did look a bit suss to me but the Chooks were far superior to the dogs and would have won anyway.
Coach I thought SKD had a blinder and deserved MOM honours.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
No bullshit full stop. Lots of people want to see Cowboys win, but noone wants them to be given silver service either.

Q? If his eyes were closest, why does he ask cameras from 85m away to check?
A. He knows if he throws it upstairs, he absolves himself of anything to do with it. Remember he's standing in the ingoal only ten feet from thousands of screaming Roosters fans. Guess that just means that some refs are not semi-final standard. Don't want to upset the crowd? Choice another vocation I say.

My heart sank when that try was awarded.....and I'm an old chook.
If my heart sank I imagine it has to have some impact on the Dogs on the paddock.
It's human error, but what an error....and when it came on the back of the world's worst forward pass (from Jake Friend) it's not a good look.
