Olympics Gold Medal tally-a-thon

Here we go folks - the Olympics (and our little competition) gets its own page. Feel free to add comments, and there's still a few spots up for grabs if you want to join in. You can't pick a total someone else has already taken.

Assuming someone picks the correct total they score a $50 NRL shop voucher, courtesy of our competition sponsors (Mark Ashford and The Thinker). Thank you Mark...tremendously generous of you).

Coach,
319 million dollars is not a tiny sum of money - plus 3 million a year for the upkeep.

That's an enormous amount of money - Suncorp Stadium was $280 million. It's used by three sporting codes and as an outdoor concert venue.

The town where that Brazilian stadium was built doesn't even have a soccer team in the national competition....and they never will. The team they do have would be lucky to get 500 people to watch a game.

Coach Potato's picture

You're right Thinker. Is a lot.
So 15 times that is , well, it is what it is.

Coach Potato's picture

I gotta say the Bunker would have been right to disallow that fumble over the line in the 7s.

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
We are actually on the same page about the Olympics.

a's picture

Yes the Cenus asked too much

Coach Potato's picture

Oh. Oops!
So used to trading barbs, I only skimmed enough to suggest it was just another day.

Religion and politics does not belong in sport, look at the gymnastics it took years before the ussr and the USA and Romania and China were beaten today japan won the mens teams event a shock and upset in massive propertions. For yrears the countries above had a mortgage on gold silver and bronze because politics dominated the judges scores if someone from the ussr made a slight mistake they would still get a bigger score than if someone from France performed a perfect routine because the judges were biased and politically motivated towards that country .

Rorting and scoring across all sports have always been questioned but no one has the guts to tell the truth .

How china and the Russia are competing at these games is a blight on the movement. Mack Horton , Michael phelps and the new womens 200 breath stroke champion Lilly king of the USA beat another drugs cheat effamnova of Russia , the Russian thought there was no way she would lose but the constant booing from the crowd and her guilt finally caught up with her and the American dismantled her.

The war between mack Horton who only said what we all think bout drug chests on the sport spoke his mind and he was criticised by the Chinese but why sun yang is a cheat he should of been banned for life puting a gold medal around his neck means the people that presented him with the gold medal are a disgrace as much as he is. Sun yang is a lowlife big mouth cheat , mack Horton is a great example a humble clean athlete who had the guts to stand up to a man who not only has disrespected the ethos of what the games stands for, but also has tried to pull the wool over our eyes thinking we are all mugs little does he know that he and the rest of the drug cheats are already viewed as vile poison with no integrity .

GaryChesterUK's picture

Coach, I like the Olympics but it is a disgrace the money they cost to host. I was a very vocal critic of 2012; I think the cost was around £8bn whilst disabled people are having their living allowance cut as we 'can't afford it'.

I think all the massive sporting events need to rethink the bidding process and how they are allocated,it seems that whoever promises to spend the most of brand new state-of-the-art facilities is favourite to be awarded the games. Brazil and China though cash-rich have millions and millions of people living in absolute poverty, for me them spending many billions on hosting the olympics is immoral. I think that a good starting point for countries wanting to host such events is assessing how their citizens are treated, and making sure that the cost of hosting the olympics won't be taking priority over making sure kids are fed and homes properly. I also think that having brand new facilities shouldn't be the norm for every event, and that it shouldn't cost the earth to host the events.

I love sport, its really important, but in the UK participation is down from where it was before the olympics, so it doesn't have the effect that was used as the main argument to justify spending all them billions. For me the 8bn would have made a much bigger difference being distributed to grass roots football, rugby, athletics, swimming teams etc etc.

Thats my rant over! now to read the RL tips!

Coach Potato's picture

You'll also be poor real soon if you keep getting on every NRL game going! It's the crooked-est betting option there is - so people say.

GaryChesterUK's picture

Ha!! Yeah I bet on RL for a bit of fun!! It sure is tricky though!

Football (Soccer) much easier to win on but betting is definitely a mugs game :)

Coach Potato's picture

Gary, GB got their second Gold with Joe Clarke winning the men's K1 slalom. How does it feel two Englishmen carrying four countries. Should be showing Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales nil.

GaryChesterUK's picture

Ha! I count myself as British not English coach! 1 gold bhind you Aussies now!

fortresseagle's picture

Forget it pom no chance why are you pommys so boring .

More gold to come in swimming hope cycling and the fox in coneing your dreaming buddy how's the turps

Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi

GaryChesterUK's picture

Ha Eagle I think by this time tomorrow we will be a couple of golds ahead and running off into the distance.

We ain't boring, our higher IQ gives us a more sophisticated sense of humour than you aussies so maybe you just don't get the jokes?

The Thinker's picture

Gutsy effort from the Boomers this morning. Very impressive.

fortresseagle's picture

Sence of humour are you seriouse you people are are bout as funny as a game of lawn bowls fair dinkum I would say crass more than funny and iq yeah saying we will only win 2 golds that is a very high IQ isn't it.

Remember u have almost 3 times the population understand that.

The Thinker's picture

If we end the Olympics with a higher gold medal tally than Great Britain I would consider that a successful games. We will see.

We are seriously overdue for a silver medal in something.

I like 90% of Poms and 90% of Aussies. Around 10% of people everywhere are infuriating. I do my best to stay in the 90%.

Doggie's picture

Why does everyone assume aussie athletes, swimmers, whatever are clean.

The Thinker's picture

Sorry about that AFL.....you can't have them all (even though you want to).

a's picture

Aus have got 5 gold medals now

fortresseagle's picture

Look here pom that accusation is about as credable as a fart in the wind. I would bite my toungue if I were you mate.

Who the hell are you to accuse us as been cheats have the beatings we have given you lot been too much to handle.

I don't think the rest of the boys on this site are going to be too happy with your accusation of calling us drug cheats you better watch it or you will fast become an enemy.

It's the spirit of Australia the guts and determination, the never say die attitude that has made this great proud country the envy of the world over.

Your comment is one of vile hate and one must think that you have no backbone to hide behind your computer and write such muck.

Fair dinkum pom u are nothing but a drop kick I take your accusation of my country very personally.

You can stick it where it belongs and just to rub salt in the wound the hoockyroos beat your no hopers 2-1 in the hockey HOWZAT for ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go the mighty Aussies more gold!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fortresseagle's picture

Ooops I made a mistake doggie ur not accusing us of been drug cheats I expected that from pommy Gary .

Gary my apologies to you I quickly saw the comment and thought it was you mate, anyway u don't like us anyway and I don't think u would disagree with doggie so it wasn't that bad after all .

Doggie ur not English are you I mean I don't hate all English people but they are the biggest whingers on this earth .

St.George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever's picture

My pick is 16 gold medals.

a's picture

Sorry but Rocket Ryan already took 16

GaryChesterUK's picture

Australia clearly punches above its weight sports wise considering your population. From our point of view the climate isn't ideal for breeding champion sportsmen. I would say both countries are good at sport but based on the fact there is many more people here I am hoping we double your gold tally :)

I don't dislike Aussies btw my IQ tease was merely some banter, I agree thinker most people in most places are cool, there are a few idiots everywhere

Coach Potato's picture

Not Gold but well done Jessica Fox.
22 years old and two podium finishes from two Olympics you"ve contested.

Quickest by nearly two seconds, several runners pass by, and then judges come back and say you hit a gate at the end. Wasn't the wind on avery windy day. Not sure who was in the Olympic Bunker but on that effort they show real NRl potential. Slow-mo didn't pick it up so where did it come from? I wouldn't have picked women's kayaking as crooked.

Suddenly put you back into second place.

And then the Spanish girl flew like they'd turned the water on harder in a kayak designed by the great Ben Lexcen. .Was neither of those but you'd be excused for thinking so. Beat Jess's original time by nearly 2 seconds. That put you back to third.

Spain - NZ - Australia podium. Well done all
.

Doggie's picture

Sorry fortress. Aussie as they come. Just stirring the pot a bit. Thought i might get a bite from coach. Hooked you instead. All the aussie drug cheats play for bombers or sharks.

fortresseagle's picture

That's ok doggie great match last nite the ref sucked but hey it was anyone's we will be back bigger and going for the big prize ,good luck in the finals.

a's picture

Come on we need 15 more Medals

mark ashford's picture

Serious bad luck to our JFox could have been gold.
Too much pressure on our Bronte girls.
Heard Alan Jones say this morning "It's the most competitive games he has ever seen" he should know.

mark ashford's picture

Gary from the UK
Coach doesn't seem to understand the UK
But let's not go there in case it exposes his IQ
Up until I was 18 months old I was a "pom" now a proud Aussie.
We're gunna kick your "British" arses this time old son.
Just watch the medal tally.

Coach Potato's picture

Actually no I don't really get it.

Gary said he doesn't class himself as an Englishman but rather as British. Is English something lesser than Brit ? That's how it sounds.

Coach Potato's picture

With medals seemingly drying up. and no time limit on entries, I find it astounding that there is still no entry received that says 5, or 6.

The winner is not whose closest. The winner must be spot on.

GaryChesterUK's picture

What do you mean medals drying up? They are just getting going?

Ohh..... You mean for the Aussies?!

GaryChesterUK's picture

You boys are probably asleep. just watching the mens team pursuit final. GB v Aus. May the best men win!

GaryChesterUK's picture

Good race, unlucky Aussies :)

Wally Lewis's picture

I only just saw this. I'll take six, but I hope I'm wrong.

Coach, I'm not on television for my hair.

Coach Potato's picture

Hey hey King. Or maybe Yeah yeah !!

Yes you are right King Wally

Thinker - the King takes 6.
He wants Mack Horton to win the 1500m Sunday night then call the Games off.

Coach Potato's picture

... He needs the damn beanie !!!

fortresseagle's picture

micheal phelps and katy ledeke of the states are out of this world
just so dominate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

great day for the aussies cycling, rowing, and walking silver medals and bronze hoping for gold medals tonight.

BigPeteBx's picture

Good evening Tippers and Thinkers.

Wrt to post made - Brazil didnt really need the games. They have enough issues with debt and poverty. It was logical that thefts would be on.

Maracana has always been the biggest footy stadium in the world. Brazilians love their footy. Did you see the crowds at the Matildas v Brazil women's football. I'll bet they let many in off the streets to attend, so they could support Brazil. There has been talk about stadiums and events not selling tickets. I felt for our girls in that match getting beaten in the shootout.

As many the silver medals we have, well, we just fell short of gold. But then the pressure and fame has been heaped on many of our athletes, that they are heartbroken, when they failed to make the grade or final.

As for Brazil having infrastructure it wont use into the future, it isn't a problem, as many hosts of past games don't really keep all the buildings.
It can be recycled or sold for other purposes. It happens - take for instance some of the Sydney 2000 Olympic accommodation, some of the cabins were sold off and our local council purchased several for camping etc at our local dam and waterway.
Also if ever any of you visit for the Bathurst 1000 Great Race, two of the games village bridges were installed at the race track for pedestrian access.
So in many ways, if Brazil pollies of the day have any sense of direction, the beach eyesores and other surplus', can be sold-off. Maybe convert games villages into a motel or for low income housing.......but, you will never take the love of Sth American football away from Brazilians.
I love them, in international football and World Cups. I love Australia, when we are there, but if Brazil gets held by an Aussie team, it means Brazil has some mighty hard work to do, before they get over the European Nations. Brazilians would die for their national code.

Check the criteria for Olympic Games Movement etc, as I'm sure somewhere, there is an arrangement in place, where the Northern and Southern Hemisphere's rotate the games venues/host city.

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening Fortress, yes I'm still about. Just been checking into first round of EPL that kicks off in London tonight. That is where my interests pick up, as NRL Finals draw near, because EPL goes until May next year - long season indeed.

Yes, Phelps and Ledecke have the right mix - confidence breeds success. No swollen heads there and they dont let the highs of it get into their head. That is where some of our Aussies, fell in a heap. Favorites for gold and got nothing. Media had built them up - fashion, modelling, the high life of promotions...it goes on.

Note in Women's 800 Freestyle, a young lass by the name of Jessica Ashwood. Her dad came from here. His mum was the first female Mayor on Council from here.
Yes mate, we have good water and an excellent dam (The Ben Chifley Dam) to store it. Jessica came 5th and the experience has done her well.

Keep well mate. I'm on the couch with Coach and my lead has been shortened in the Non-Tippers Comp. Mainly due to Dogs and Drags wins.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Mark - pressure has surely been on our athletes.
Bloody wind and gates beat Jess Fox.

John Coates also said "the most difficult games to run".
I don't think some of the infrastructure was totally completed either. We'll see what comes out in the Closing Report. Money makes money, so it had to be spent, not that Brazil had it to spend. Rio was the lure and the dangling marketing carrot.

Cheers and keep well - Big Pete

Medal talliies of the host nations

I guess Rio's explanation is lack of money to invest in sport
Moscows explanation of 195. You guess so but remember how Americans hate to be outdone by Russia, and look what happened in 1984. We all just think the red white and blue are super athletes don't we? Something to think about I say.

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
65 nations boycotted the games in Moscow (including the US).

14 nations in the eastern bloc boycotted the LA games (including the Soviet Union).

Hence the higher medal tallies for the locals at both events.

Coach Potato's picture

Yes there is always more than one factor.

Remember there is still damning circumstances to conclude drugs were used by Cronulla and Essendon yet failed to lead to results on ye field.

Parra have just been done for salary cap breaches in years where they won the spoon.

2 and 2 don't always equal 4.

The Thinker's picture

Come on Coach

The boycotts are a greater contributing factor than your suggestion of systemic cheating by the US?

The improved medal tally by the US is almost entirely due to two factors....they're competing at home and the Soviet Union and East Germany weren't there. Surely you've seen the episode of The Simpsons where Krusty takes a bath on his Krusty Burger Olympics promotion?

In 1988, one Olympics after their LA domination, the US finished third behind the Soviet Union and East Germany. Did the Americans cheat their way to success in LA, and then just stop cheating? Why? I'm not going to suggest every American athlete was clean because they were not...but to suggest there was systemic cheating in the US is a long bow.

St.George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Oh wait so you can't pick the same as someone else. Ok then my pick is 15.

St.George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Nope I'll go with 20 then.
