Round eight selections

Brisbane Broncos vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

Age shall not weary them, but it's starting to take its toll on one of the greats of the modern game. Greg Inglis himself has admitted his form is down from where he'd like it to be. I'm not convinced he has complete confidence in his knee. He's still an outstanding footballer, but I fear the best of him has been and gone. The best of him is on display in the video on this page - a remarkable solo try and possibly the best solo try ever, and it happened to be in this corresponding game in 2014. On Friday night he fights to hold on to his number one jersey for the Kangaroos, but it looks like Darius Boyd already has one arm up its sleeve. Even the greats aren't great forever, but how great he was. One man not wearied by age is Corey 'Benjamin Button' Parker - a man who becomes greater every season. On Friday night he goes past another one-club player (Nathan Hindmarsh) to become the most capped forward in NRL history. 331 games and counting is an extraordinary contribution to the game. He captains an unchanged line-up at home, where they've scored successive victories without conceding a point. Back the total points unders I say.

Verdict – Broncos by 14

Result - Broncos 30 defeated Rabbitohs 8

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

One of the perils of tipping early is not knowing who is in and who is out. Last week I convinced myself Greg Bird could get out of his suspension - pretty silly of me in hindsight given he's the most suspended player in the history of the NRL. He didn't play last week and the Titans missed him, so his return for the Bulldogs clash gives the visitors a very real chance of an upset. That said, I'm sticking with the Bulldogs on the basis that their backline is the more potent. Players 1 through 7 for the Bulldogs have scored 23 tries this season, while the Titans backline has scored just nine. Granted the Titans forwards are scoring more tries than the Dogs forwards, but I'm banking on the Bulldogs pack holding their own in front of a supportive crowd. If they can do that the Dogs win and, as Steve Roach used to say, the backs simply determine the size of the margin.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result - Bulldogs 21 defeated Titans 20

Canberra Raiders vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

There's a feeling I get when I look to the Wests that their spirit is crying for leaving. Five losses in succession for the striped cats looks bad and it is, but at least they've competed in most of those games. Take note that their points differential is substantially better than the top eight Raiders. The Raiders aren't exactly firing with two substantial losses in a row, but to give them some credit their opponents in those games are starting to look like genuine top four contenders. I'm certainly not tipping the Raiders with confidence but I'll stick with sticky at home. Raiders just, but it makes me wonder. Ooh....it makes me wonder.

Verdict – Raiders by 2

Result - Raiders 60 defeated Tigers 6

North Queensland Cowboys vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

The Cowboys are undefeated at home this season and in doing so have scored 140 points while conceding just 32. In days of yore visiting teams would look forward to the trip to Townsville, knowing the two points was there for the taking and then a night of free-flowing (and free) silliness was on offer at the Mad Cow after the game. Not any more. Note that the Cowboys have a history of starting the season slowly and building throughout the year. I think we're seeing the same thing this season, but their slow start in 2016 isn't as slow as we've seen in seasons prior. Can they actually be better in 2016 than they were in 2015? JT says yes we can. Watch for a big game from Michael Morgan this weekend - I suspect Mal Meninga will be calling him any day now. In pure footballing terms it's the game of the round. Get there.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Cowboys 32 defeated Eels 16

Cronulla Sharks vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

Seven games down and here is a list of the points scored by the Panthers this season - 22, 16, 23, 12, 20, 18 and 20. One thing you can't accuse the Panthers of is inconsistency. In seasons past 20 points is probably enough to beat the Sharks but not this season. They've scored 99 points in their last three outings, and daytime conditions in front of a vocal home crowd should give their backline every chance to shine. If you're keen to back someone in this, back them to win by 1-12 - I can't imagine there'll be much in it.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Sharks 20 defeated Panthers 18

Newcastle Knights vs Manly Sea Eagles – Monday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

In a season where the Knights aren't likely to have a lot of highlights a victory at home on ANZAC Day would be one of them. On form you can't possibly tip them, even against a Manly side that aren't at their best, but I've a crazy feeling inside that the Knights will lift like stupid on Monday afternoon. A big crowd, an emotional occasion, and a coach who knows how to pull the heart strings and make them sing. Jeremy Smith returns to bolster the pack, the Sims boys will fire and Jarrod Mullen can steer the ship. That's enough to keep them in the game and the steady goalkicking of Trent Hodkinson can get their noses in front. It's a long shot, but I'm shooting regardless.

Verdict – Knights by 2

Result - Sea Eagles 26 defeated Knights 10

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Sydney Roosters – Monday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

I'm sure there are perfectly cromulent reasons why the Roosters are favoured to win this game - if anyone knows what they are please let me know. I thought the Dragons were very good indeed against the Titans last round and you'd expect them to improve again on the back of that effort. Of primary concern is there inability to score points, but their defence should hold against a team that are running last. Note that this is a home game for the Dragons played at the home ground of the Roosters, but the Dragons will have their fare share of the crowd support regardless. On paper the Roosters should be winning, but we've been saying that for weeks. This contest is always a tremendous occasion, and I urge you to make the effort to watch.

Verdict – Dragons by 2

Result - Dragons 20 defeated Roosters 18

Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors – Monday night – AAMI Park

The Storm feel like a thoroughly professional unit desperately trying to keep things together through difficult circumstances. The Warriors feel like a thoroughly unprofessional unit desperately trying to keep things together through difficult circumstances. Given the venue, the occasion, the senior players at the Storm, and yet another line-up change for the Warriors spine I'll stick with the purple machine.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result - Storm 42 defeated Warriors 0

Right. A good showing last week still leaves me well outside the potential to shake the top of the tree. Lets see if we can do it again.

Broncos - Hopefully this will be closer than last week, but with the current form the Broncos are in it's going to be hard to see them dropping this game, especially at home on a Friday night. Should be close to a packed house as well, very hard if your a Rabbit.

Bulldogs - Hard to pick a winner in this one, Dogs lost, Titans lost, but both teams are better than their results indicate. It wouldn't either upset or shock me if the Titans give the Dogs a beating, but I'll take the home team.

Raiders - Likewise, Raiders were flattened by the Sharks and I still think that both teams have points in them, the Raiders feel to have more. Should be an interesting back and forth game with almost a NSW cup score in the end.

Eels - The BOYS have the beating of the Cowboys, last year we put 30 -0 in the first half only to give it up, we have beaten them out of QLD already this year. We know we can do it, they know we can do it, we just have to do it. Clint Gutherson double to lock the game away. CARN THE BOYS.

Sharks - Panthers almost beat themselves last week in the final 10, and the Sharks kicked the stuffing out of the Raiders by 24. It was another rough one to call, I wanted to go the Panthers, but the have failed to fire on back to back weeks so far. Sharks are winning like a contender should do.

Manly - Hard to tip the Knights against teams above them on the ladder, with an average losing margin of 27 points so far and that excludes their win and a draw. Manly aren't the worse team in the league at the moment and might have had some fight in them if they had time to chase the points, not get blown out of the park in the last few minutes. Manly by 24

Roosters - Roosters couldn't capitalise on the scrappy Panthers handling in the last bit of their game which proves they are not mentally there atm. Dragons have just visited QLD and went 76 - 19. The Roosters have gone 61-64 in the same time, So based on the numbers I'm going with the Roosters.

Storm - Before the Warriors lost RTS, I was going the Storm, now without RTS I'm staying with the Storm. But this might work for the Warriors, new, exciting, possibly game changing. The storm were ordinary against the Tigers, but sorry JR this is the Warriors in Australia. It can only have 1 result.

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Broncos by 20- The Rabbitohs misery will continue here. Broncos way too good.

Bulldogs by 8- Bulldogs have been inconsistent. But Titans have been in bad form. Bulldogs are playing at home, they have the home crowd advantage. Yes, that might not even matter, but I think the Bulldogs will win at home.

Raiders by 4- Raiders in an absolute belter.

Cowboys by 2- Cowboys in a close one.

Sharks by 10- Sharks too good here.

Sea Eagles by 14- I don't think Knights will back up their horrible performance last week with a win. They'll lose here. Manly too good here.

The mighty Dragons by 10- Last week, the drought was over. We'll prepare for this one well and back in Sydney FINALLY we'll get the win here. 20-10

And Warriors by 7- Warriors are the Storm's bogey side. They have a good record against Storm and they play well in Melbourne against the Storm. But in late, they haven't done too well at Melbourne against the Storm. The Storm just stick with the same game plan every week. Sometimes it works, sometimes teams know what they're going to do therefore it doesn't work for them sometimes. Yes Warriors are without Tuivasa-Sheck, but it's only one player. Yes he's a superstar, the Warriors will miss a chunk without him. But, Manu Vatuvei comes back for them onto the wing and Lolohea goes to fullback. I think he'll play pretty well at fullback getting more involved. So my tip is the Warriors.

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

Sorry to follow up my last comment. Good luck to everyone. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alright. Continuing the Led Zeppelin theme that The Thinker has got going this round here are my tips for this week. Good luck everybody.

Broncos - The song to remain same for Brisbane as I expect them to ramble on and beat Rabbitohs this Friday in the evening. Broncos by ten points.

Bulldogs - Achilles last stand for Titans. Lose this and they lose any chance of getting into top eight this season. It will be close but The Rover by twelve points.

Raiders - Sticky's men to put an Immigrant song performance on the Tigers. Raiders by ten points.

Eels - Celebration Day for the boys from Paramatta as I've got this feeling they will beat Cowboys this week before facing Gallows Pole next week over their salary cap. Eels by eight points. Rock and Roll.

Sharks - Cronulla to beat Black Dogs in this game. Cronulla by six points.

Knights - Sea Eagles are Moby Dick of this competition as everybody loves hunting them down especially when it's on their home turf. Expect Knights to do same leaving everybody watching at home Dazed and Confused. Knights by two points.

Dragons - It's been Good Times Bad Times for both of these teams but look to St George Dragons to Tramples Them Underfoot in this Battle of Evermore on Anazac Day. Dragons by six points.

Storm - Anybody who's put on with my crap on this site for more than two weeks knows that I have Whole Lot Of Love for NZ Warriors and as much as I would love to see them Bring It On Home against Storm this Anzac Day when I'll be Out On The Tiles I know that this game is just going be another Heartbreaker. Storm by twenty points. If I'm wrong it's Nobody's Fault But Mine. Thank You.

Awesome. Thanks again Thinker. Thanks everybody. Have a happy Anzac Day. Laters ! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=K9fp3rCHvic ;-D

Changed to Panthers. They will upset Cronulla this game.

Broncos
Bulldogs
Tigers
Cowboys
Panthers
Manly
Roosters

The Joker's picture

Did anybody notice the Tigers new recruits on debut. The way they performed against the storm tells me that they will be snatching this game from the raiders in the dieing minutes. Ricky might have to quit after this one. lol.

christine's picture

There is a theory out there in the ether that you shouldn't tip the team that played against sharks the week before because when they play against sharks they get towelled up well this week the raiders who played against sharks last week play against tigers this week who played against storm last week & got towelled up so given that theory & consider home ground advantage I've gone with raiders , see what happens ...

Coach Potato's picture

What a celebration Sunday footy was meant to be this week. Sharks meet Panthers, both clubs playing their 50th season. Why is this game not receiving what it deserves? Why is it Penrith only celebrating their 50th season since joining in 1967. Sharks footy club refusing to have anything to do with it turning 50 this year. Surely it can't be a mathematics thing and they just don't believe it's 50 in 2016. Surely not? Maybe yes.

Johnny Ray's picture

It's simple. The Sharks prefer to celebrate 50 years because it looks plain weird for club to have number 50 on their jersey when they've only been around 49 years. In Panthers defence least management there is smart enough to know that they're celebrate 50 seasons. It's not like Warriors who put "Celebrating Ten Years of Beast 2004-2013" on all their commemorative Manu Vatuvei merchandise a couple of years ago. Dude ... :-s

Coach Potato's picture

My god, education is certainly Gonski in this country.
2004 - 2013 is 10 years JR. If you still have all your fingers you can count.

04- 1
05- 2
06- 3
07- 4
08- 5
09- 6
10- 7
11- 8
12- 9
13- 10

Just like seasons 1967 thru 2016 for both Penrith and Cronulla is 50 years.

Will have to put you down as an honorary Sharkametician, JR?

Johnny Ray's picture

Yeah you're right Coach but only to point because what you've just counted in is seasons not years. As I said 2004 to 2013 is ten seasons not ten years ( for further proof that it's not ten years here's the math : 2013-2004 = 9 ). The problem is people being able to differate between the two definitions that's what makes things so confusing. Even I'm starting to completely doubt myself ... :-S

Johnny Ray's picture

Or to go one further the difference between 2016 and 1967 equals 49 years and 50 seasons. Both answers are correct ... ;-D

Speak up Coach, your not saying anything against the Bunker, just the judiciary. I understand that we need to respect the ref's, but there have been to many years of letting everyone get away with murder. Take players like Cam Smith, always at the ref, Squeaky wheel and all that. But what is the difference in constant arguing, bemoaning and telling them how to do their job vs a light touch in conversation?

Fortress eagle's picture

If the mighty eagles don't beat the knights than there should be am enquiry if the boys go out there and silence the crowd early with a couple of tries than the beating the knights had the week before could turn out to be a double dose I mean fair dinkum the eagkes should only have to be in 2nd gear to win this one the only fear I have is the ref the occasion the crowd could get to him and we could have a farce if the ref is fair the mighty eagles by 30 go u mighty and magnifient eagles by the way I got a bird the other day and called him 40 nil. Cheers and good luck everyone.

Coach Potato's picture

I gotta say you're wrong JR because all along Panthers have been celebrating their 50th "season" of footy. What's the point in celebrating 50 years played. You only get to do that in the off season.

Coach Potato's picture

Oh so JR, Manu's ten year commemorative shirt should have read something like 2004-2014 ?? You sure? You were really unhappy about it only mentioning the ten years he had played?

My god. Education in this country is more than Gonski. It's Gooooonnnnneee!!

Poor Sharks administration, their fans, and Thinker scribes. They mock Penrith for not being able to count, and don't even realise they are the ones that can't.

The Thinker's picture

It's 50 by my count.....assuming you count the Super League season, and clearly Penrith do.

Perhaps the Sharks thought it a bad idea to remind people how long they've been in this competition without winning it. 50 years.....one of the longest droughts in world sport.

The Thinker's picture

Thanks Tailspin.....I'll slot them in

What round are you looking at Tailspin??? Those tips are all over the place!

Here are my tips

Broncos by 10 I think Broncos will go to 8-1 here with a win over the Rabbitohs

Bulldogs by 6 I think Bulldogs are going to get on top of the Titans here

Raiders by 2 I think it is going to be a thriller here with the Raiders winning

Cowboys by 4 This is going to be hard for the Cowboys but the best team will always get revenge so its Go Cowboys here

Sharks by 1 It is going to be a thriller here with Sharks winning

Knights by 1 Knights will win in extra time here

Roosters by 6 Roosters to win their 2nd game here

Storm by 4 I think Storm will sneak home again

Coach Potato's picture

The Gallipoli campaign wasn't no 4 day stint as you'd be forgiven for thinking. It stretched a horrible 11 months, February 19 1915 to January 9 2016. Why we marked the ANZAC centenary last year is anyone's guess. Why we chose to mark the beginning of such a campaign. My thinking is it would have been better to mark the end of Gallipoli, and that was 1916. 100 years ago.

Let's not worry about 50 too much.

Coach Potato's picture

Thinker, Leicester City Football Club. Currently lead the Premier League by 5 points with 4 games to go.

They formed in 1884. Their highest finish in the top flight was 2nd in 1929. Forget about the maths. If Leicester kick the last 100m, it will truly be the most historic win ever.

Coach Potato's picture

Panthers and Sharks can count Super League if Broncos are allowed to count their trophy - and they do.

mark ashford's picture

Thanks for noticing Christine, not losing interest just trying to put Coach off his blah-blah of the QLders.
Coach I must agree McKendrick's(is that how you spell it?) suspension is a bit silly. There was no agro in his touch as there was no agro in any of the previous charges.
BUT tell me Coach if you were in a line at Maccas and there were 5 people in front of you and the first person said "can I have a big mac" and the girl said "we are out of big macs" and then the second person asked for a big mac only to be told they were out and then the next 3 also asked for a big mac only to be told the same thing. Would you step up to the counter and ask for a big mac?
The NRL is saying there are NO MORE BIG MACS!

Rocket Ryan's picture

I heard peter stirling say if parramatta lost 8 points for their salery cap rorts they might still be a chance of making the eight on their current form if that was to happen then i dont think bulldog and storm supporters would be happy with that at all.

mark ashford's picture

Rocket I don't agree with clubs losing points for so called salary cap rorts.
I didn't agree when the dogs lost points about 15 years ago and then the Storm more recently.
Big fines and maybe a salary cap reduction for the next season would be more appropriate.
The loss of points only hurts the fans, who lets be honest are what RL is all about. Who want's to see their club play for nothing.
The penalties should be incurred by the management who let it happen.
Don't care what Sterlo said a loss of 8 points is devastating.
Lets make it an even playing field and let the player agents/ club managers/ coachs etc pay for the problem.
To take points of a club only penalises the fans and that aint right!

Coach Potato's picture

Mark, as I recall the first person got a Big Mac, the next didn't they just ran out, the third missed out too. The fourth was lucky, a fifteen year old just finished their toilet break. Not quite enough time to wash their hands but enough time to get quick smart back onto the Big Mac grill. Was a bit of a lucky dip at Macca's that day. Regards burgers. Regards hygiene of cooks. Not unlike the hands of ref rule. A few did time, a few didnt. Agressive behaviour apparently not considered. Eg Can anyone relay back to me how the overturned judgement against Klemmer read? No? Didn't think so.

Coach Potato's picture

Level playing field huh? You calling on your own team to come clean , Mark? That would be an essential part of your plan.

Coach Potato's picture

To make the finals minus 8 points. That would be on average a total (pre deduction) of 36.

36 just about wins the minor premiership. Minus 8 points and Parra have as much chance as the Titanic post iceberg. Ie a They're sunk.

Sammills's picture

leicester could be EPL champions and Palace could be FA cup winners over the pond but not certain if were going to get too many make believe stories coming true in Rd 8 this week.
Broncos by 2
Dogs by 12
Cowboys by 20 ?
Tigers by 2
Sharks by 6
Roosters by 4
Storm by 6
Sea Eagles by 14

Coach Potato's picture

Ok so talking about hands, heres the game that's not meant to use any, and Maradona, arguably the best of all time. Whether you are a fan or his or soccer or neither, no matter you will still marvel at the absolute 100% control of a ball.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRG0kAcdppA

Fast forward to 1986 world cup Q/f Argentina v England which produced the goal to be forever known as Hand of God.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ccNkksrfls

Only 4 minutes later, no need for hands, beat almost the whole team with his feet. The music's a bit much but slow mo is great to see how many players he beat. There's only 11 on a team and I counted he beat 7 of them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z-qm-Sb_4s

Then fast forward again ... I think they call it Hand of Cod :p

Baggy_Gee's picture

I agree with Coach on the touching subject, as much as I would have been annoyed and aggrieved, Foran should have got a week if that was the precedence set for the penalty. We all believe in fair play, and as much as we like to joke that our team should be the only one exempt, we all know that for the game to work across every level there has to be consistency. Which is why I'm so frustrated with this cap crap. Why has our 4 point deduction ballooned out to 8? Why do the Titans get 2 years probation and not a point loss last season? Why can local businesses get unused boxes at a stadium which is good for them and their clients? Why is this rubbish dragging out like the stupid ASADA thing of 2013 (2015?)?

Baggy_Gee's picture

That last one was proof how good he was, the first is proof that once branded, you stay branded.

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Got all excited last week ‘cos I thought both Newbie and the Mighty Roosters were on their way back but alas, we both fell in a hole. I’m thinking it just aint our year. At least I picked 4/8 which is way better than what I’ve been doing so far. Interesting to note (for me anyway) that I’m sailing along superbly in my AFL tipping competition (sitting pretty in 3rd position) so maybe it’s a case of doing well in one and crap in the other and vickie-verkie. Hmmm …

Penultimate week before I head off to Thailand so I’m hoping like hell I can shore up my points this week and next before I “guess” my tips for rounds 10 and 11. Not much chance of that given my current form but having said that, I always go into each week expecting to get a perfect round, doesn't everyone? OK, without further ado, let’s get into it …

Broncos
Bulldogs
Tigers
Eels
Sharks
Manly
Roosters
Warriors

Going with what I think are a few roughies in the Eels, Roosters and maybe the Warriors but the rest, I would imagine, should pick themselves. Then again, if I actually knew what I was doing I wouldn’t be sitting on the bottom of the ladder would I?

Don't worry too much about your tipping Mark Ashford. You're only 7 off the pace and I'm 7 off you, so you're not doing that bad, especially considering it's only been 7 rounds so far. 7-7-7? Is there a cosmic message here I wonder.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Cheers.

P.S. Why is there an expiration date on sour cream? Hmmm…

Coach Potato's picture

The maths doesn't look great. But it's not improbable.

Lose against Cowboys and stay on 10
Minus 8 = 2.
Add two byes = 6
16 games left. Need 22 /24 more to make the 8.
That's 11 or 12 wins of the remaining 16.

Win against the Cowboys and it becomes 10 or 11 out of the remaining 16. Win this week and the maths is looking ok for Parra. God, if they can't win 10 out of 16 then they shouldn't be in the finals anyway.

In saying all this, it's the bookies who know the most right? Remember last week I told they were still paying $25 to win the spoon? They are now into $3. Maybe I influenced a mining magnate or two? Anyway it tells me this is not just a points deduction thing. It's not the Broncos or the Titans/NRL pty Ltd involved so the knives are out. Parra will be playing for fun the rest of the season. Heartbreaking for fans who have waited since 1986. Yeah not since the Hand of God has Parra lifted their own silverware. Not the players fault, nor the fan, but the team was inadvertantly advantaged over others. Parra will argue so too was Gold Coast and the non-compliant Broncos.

Get Chris Murphy on the counter lawsuit case, and the NRL would be toast. Will be an interesting next few months whatever happens.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Lets see the verdict first, then we'll hire Dennis Denuto. We're taking this to the high court of Australia.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Either that or we'll steal their gates and get Farouk to talk t his friends.

Coach Potato's picture

Parra fans protest marching through the streets of Sydney to hold picket signs out the front of NRL H/Q.

In a strange way, I reckon it would produce a show of unity and stir the fire in die-hard Rugby League fans of all teams, near and far.
