Round eight selections

Brisbane Broncos vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

Age shall not weary them, but it's starting to take its toll on one of the greats of the modern game. Greg Inglis himself has admitted his form is down from where he'd like it to be. I'm not convinced he has complete confidence in his knee. He's still an outstanding footballer, but I fear the best of him has been and gone. The best of him is on display in the video on this page - a remarkable solo try and possibly the best solo try ever, and it happened to be in this corresponding game in 2014. On Friday night he fights to hold on to his number one jersey for the Kangaroos, but it looks like Darius Boyd already has one arm up its sleeve. Even the greats aren't great forever, but how great he was. One man not wearied by age is Corey 'Benjamin Button' Parker - a man who becomes greater every season. On Friday night he goes past another one-club player (Nathan Hindmarsh) to become the most capped forward in NRL history. 331 games and counting is an extraordinary contribution to the game. He captains an unchanged line-up at home, where they've scored successive victories without conceding a point. Back the total points unders I say.

Verdict – Broncos by 14

Result - Broncos 30 defeated Rabbitohs 8

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

One of the perils of tipping early is not knowing who is in and who is out. Last week I convinced myself Greg Bird could get out of his suspension - pretty silly of me in hindsight given he's the most suspended player in the history of the NRL. He didn't play last week and the Titans missed him, so his return for the Bulldogs clash gives the visitors a very real chance of an upset. That said, I'm sticking with the Bulldogs on the basis that their backline is the more potent. Players 1 through 7 for the Bulldogs have scored 23 tries this season, while the Titans backline has scored just nine. Granted the Titans forwards are scoring more tries than the Dogs forwards, but I'm banking on the Bulldogs pack holding their own in front of a supportive crowd. If they can do that the Dogs win and, as Steve Roach used to say, the backs simply determine the size of the margin.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result - Bulldogs 21 defeated Titans 20

Canberra Raiders vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

There's a feeling I get when I look to the Wests that their spirit is crying for leaving. Five losses in succession for the striped cats looks bad and it is, but at least they've competed in most of those games. Take note that their points differential is substantially better than the top eight Raiders. The Raiders aren't exactly firing with two substantial losses in a row, but to give them some credit their opponents in those games are starting to look like genuine top four contenders. I'm certainly not tipping the Raiders with confidence but I'll stick with sticky at home. Raiders just, but it makes me wonder. Ooh....it makes me wonder.

Verdict – Raiders by 2

Result - Raiders 60 defeated Tigers 6

North Queensland Cowboys vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

The Cowboys are undefeated at home this season and in doing so have scored 140 points while conceding just 32. In days of yore visiting teams would look forward to the trip to Townsville, knowing the two points was there for the taking and then a night of free-flowing (and free) silliness was on offer at the Mad Cow after the game. Not any more. Note that the Cowboys have a history of starting the season slowly and building throughout the year. I think we're seeing the same thing this season, but their slow start in 2016 isn't as slow as we've seen in seasons prior. Can they actually be better in 2016 than they were in 2015? JT says yes we can. Watch for a big game from Michael Morgan this weekend - I suspect Mal Meninga will be calling him any day now. In pure footballing terms it's the game of the round. Get there.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Cowboys 32 defeated Eels 16

Cronulla Sharks vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

Seven games down and here is a list of the points scored by the Panthers this season - 22, 16, 23, 12, 20, 18 and 20. One thing you can't accuse the Panthers of is inconsistency. In seasons past 20 points is probably enough to beat the Sharks but not this season. They've scored 99 points in their last three outings, and daytime conditions in front of a vocal home crowd should give their backline every chance to shine. If you're keen to back someone in this, back them to win by 1-12 - I can't imagine there'll be much in it.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Sharks 20 defeated Panthers 18

Newcastle Knights vs Manly Sea Eagles – Monday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

In a season where the Knights aren't likely to have a lot of highlights a victory at home on ANZAC Day would be one of them. On form you can't possibly tip them, even against a Manly side that aren't at their best, but I've a crazy feeling inside that the Knights will lift like stupid on Monday afternoon. A big crowd, an emotional occasion, and a coach who knows how to pull the heart strings and make them sing. Jeremy Smith returns to bolster the pack, the Sims boys will fire and Jarrod Mullen can steer the ship. That's enough to keep them in the game and the steady goalkicking of Trent Hodkinson can get their noses in front. It's a long shot, but I'm shooting regardless.

Verdict – Knights by 2

Result - Sea Eagles 26 defeated Knights 10

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Sydney Roosters – Monday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

I'm sure there are perfectly cromulent reasons why the Roosters are favoured to win this game - if anyone knows what they are please let me know. I thought the Dragons were very good indeed against the Titans last round and you'd expect them to improve again on the back of that effort. Of primary concern is there inability to score points, but their defence should hold against a team that are running last. Note that this is a home game for the Dragons played at the home ground of the Roosters, but the Dragons will have their fare share of the crowd support regardless. On paper the Roosters should be winning, but we've been saying that for weeks. This contest is always a tremendous occasion, and I urge you to make the effort to watch.

Verdict – Dragons by 2

Result - Dragons 20 defeated Roosters 18

Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors – Monday night – AAMI Park

The Storm feel like a thoroughly professional unit desperately trying to keep things together through difficult circumstances. The Warriors feel like a thoroughly unprofessional unit desperately trying to keep things together through difficult circumstances. Given the venue, the occasion, the senior players at the Storm, and yet another line-up change for the Warriors spine I'll stick with the purple machine.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result - Storm 42 defeated Warriors 0

I realise the current streak table is proving this is not a Panthers year. My comfort is the knowledge that it's only a theory about needing to be in the top 3 streak scores, and that I'm wrong plenty often.

BRONCOS 7
SHARKS 5
EELS 5
COWBOYS 4
STORM 3
BULLDOGS 2
RAIDERS 2
SEA EAGLES 2
WARRIORS 2
TITANS 2

Bloody hell Coach, I cant win with those panthers, whats doin???

Coach Potato's picture

But Tailspin, their 4 losses they were in front of with ten to go, Cowboys, Sharks, Dragons, and Bulldogs. The rest they won including the Parra, and the only team that's beaten Broncos.

tigerholic's picture

Ah Coach, you have to stop looking at the narrow losses old mate. They are still losses and the injury curse may have struck the Panthers again with one of your main weapons Te Maire Martin gone for a long pell.

Maybe the Tigers will stop the Panthers from hitting the cellar floor Coach, Rocket Ryan can throw stones at the moment with the Broncos riding high.

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
A few weeks ago I suggested the Panthers at $3 to make the top eight was a fair bet (I think it was $3). I still think its a good bet, but you can probably get more than $3 now.

They are about to play three games they can win at home - Raiders, Warriors and Titans. 6 of their next nine games are at home.....they need to produce one of your streaks.

It's fine to say they're in these games but they aren't winning enough of them.

a's picture

But more excuses PNthers are not just good enough

Baggy_Gee's picture

Apparently Segeayro is back in contention for next week allowing Wallace to get back into the halves. It bodes well for the Panthers as the Soward/Wallace combination has been pretty good. We'll have to see what happens down south today with the Warriors, but as it currently stands the Panthers have a great chance of putting some wins together. As long as it doesn't come at the expense of the Eels, they can make the eight, if its close then not a prayer.

Thinker don't get coach potatoes hopes up just ask tigerholic the Raiders were pretty good last start!

Lest we forget ready for the three clashes today especially the Dragons-Roosters game. Knights-Manly have already started

Coach Potato's picture

Just keep on coming up against teams who are fielding their absolute best 17, and not once this year have Penrith fielded theirs. Not to say results would have been different, but frustrating to be left wondering.

Tipsters are tough to please. I'm thinking win the next couple and they are back 5-5 and that kind of strike rate will mean September. And all those rematches later in the season get played at Penrith.

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
Penrith shouldn't lose too many to Origin duty this year - I expect they'll make some inroads through the winter months.

If Segeyaro comes back fit and well and can stay that way....the top eight beckons.

Good luck to you sir.

Coach Potato's picture

A week's a long time in Rugby League.

Last week we were told to "Believe the Hype" about Latrell Mitchell.

Any believers still out there?I never believed. Never been convinced. Today only confirms I was not fooled. Only 18 you say? Well he's far from ready I would respond.

Coach Potato's picture

Thinker,

# We still won't have our best 17 again now until Martin makes it back, but watch our defence and offence improve a notch each when Whare is back on the park.

#No, I haven't been knighted as yet. I'm still trying to explain the streak theory to the Queen's guards.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Roosters unlucky poor refereeing again for all to see

Coach Potato's picture

Hey Rocket. Roosters had a two tries given. One where Jake Friend threw it a metre and a half forward earlier in the set, and the other where the ball was knocked-on into the defender's leg attempting to kick through to the in goal. Any chance of including those in your analysis? Or are they already included and Roosters were still dudded? Would love to know.

Coach Potato's picture

Warriors, a deficit of 28 has not been reversed in 108 years. Not once.
Will tonight be the night? Not thinking so.

Coach Potato's picture

Easier enough to cut and paste R8 best and worst streak tables now. Dragons still deciding which list they should be on.

Remember 10+ win score is needed to finish top 4. Broncos almost there already.

10+ lose score qualifies for bottom 4, and Roosters are equally almost there already.

" Storm - Anybody who's put on with my crap on this site for more than two weeks knows that I have Whole Lot Of Love for NZ Warriors and as much as I would love to see them Bring It On Home against Storm this Anzac Day when I'll be Out On The Tiles I know that this game is just going be another Heartbreaker. Storm by twenty points. If I'm wrong it's Nobody's Fault But Mine. Thank You. "

Dude :-(

Did you see Robinson spray

Baggy_Gee's picture

Wasn't to sure about the first try to the Dragon's. Did he even get downwards pressure? I would have been spewing as well if one of the BOYS got penalised let alone reported like Napa, good clean hit, identically to the one Scott put on G.I. for the same result.

Coach Potato's picture

Gotta be a smokescreen surely Trent Robinson. Were the couple of calls against the Roosters the reason why they lost? Hardly because you were also given two tries that weren't ones.

This wasn't about this game. This is a smokescreen to deflect attention away from yourself as coach of a team that has lost 7/8.

The only farce going on is if you ,:
1- don't cop a huge fine for things that happen to every team these days, not just yours
2- aren't on your last legs as coach.

Coach Potato's picture

Thinker, if selectors had any sense we'd be without Moylan, Mansour, and a selection of great tough young forwards thru Origin season.

Happy for Penrith, the selectors don't have any.

tigerholic's picture

The end of another weekend of footy. The wrong people are in the headlines again, the Referees and the Bunker making incredibly obvious wrong decisions.

Stop making the on field refs having to give an opinion, Badger made some idiotic calls as try's and then the Bunker could not find enough to overturn.

The one positive about the refs being in the headlines is that the spotlight is off the Tigers for a spell.

Coach, you seem to be very defensive when ever Rocket throws a few barbs your way. When you reply to him throw something back at him, I can see him running for cover with his horse tail between his legs.

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans,
I've updated the tipping comp and the NRL ladder - standing ovations for Rick, T Corte and The Voyeur with perfect rounds this weekend. Rick has kicked away from the pack at this stage and is looking good....but we've a long way to go.

I'll have the round 9 page published later today, and I'll add my previews and tips on Wednesday morning.

All the best

Steel Panther's picture

Thinker...talking of kicking...someone needs to kick the Warriors asses out of the comp for good to save the ongoing embarrassment the supporters are subjected to week in week out Where was the Anzac fighting spirit last night? Nowhere!!! And for Trent Robinson to dish up a serve re the refs is seriously unbelievable. His team got two poor decisions which both resulted in tries.

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

Thinker you made some mistakes with the results for this week how many people got.

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

I mean for round 8

Dragons fanboy 2007

I'll have a look - anyone in particular?

Got 7 from 8 which puts me on 42 , I foolishly tipped roosters over dragons .

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

I had a look and Footy Chick got 8, Newbie got 4, and there is more.

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

Also Baggy Gee got 6, Chooks got 5. I'll leave it at that

The Thinker's picture

Thanks Dragon....that seems very odd, but I'll go back and check everyone.

The Thinker's picture

Sheesh.....there were plenty of mistakes there. Thanks for letting me know Dragon......clearly I forgot to put my eyeballs in this morning.

Everything should be in order now....but feel free to let me know if you pick up any errors in the future.

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

You're welcome Thinker it's all right that you made those mistakes. It's all fixed now that's the main thing. Yep, I'll let you know in the future if it happens again. Cheers!!!

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

Not all are fixed actually. Unless they're getting fixed now.

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

Unless you didn't fix up the scores. I dunno

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

The scores for round 8

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

The scores for round 8

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

No just don't worry about what said before, you fixed all of them. It just doesn't show on the results for each tipster for round 8 that's all. It shows on the updated ladder the changes so yes you changed all them. My bad.

The Thinker's picture

It will update there after a little while Dragon....takes a while to filter through.

The tipping comp should be up to date now.

Thanks again for checking and letting me know.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Hey hey hey, now I'm an acceptable distance above the foot of the ladder, middle of the table here I come.

Coach Potato's picture

Too bad those BOYS will be joining Roosters real soon down the bottom of the other ladder.
