Round eight selections

Brisbane Broncos vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

Age shall not weary them, but it's starting to take its toll on one of the greats of the modern game. Greg Inglis himself has admitted his form is down from where he'd like it to be. I'm not convinced he has complete confidence in his knee. He's still an outstanding footballer, but I fear the best of him has been and gone. The best of him is on display in the video on this page - a remarkable solo try and possibly the best solo try ever, and it happened to be in this corresponding game in 2014. On Friday night he fights to hold on to his number one jersey for the Kangaroos, but it looks like Darius Boyd already has one arm up its sleeve. Even the greats aren't great forever, but how great he was. One man not wearied by age is Corey 'Benjamin Button' Parker - a man who becomes greater every season. On Friday night he goes past another one-club player (Nathan Hindmarsh) to become the most capped forward in NRL history. 331 games and counting is an extraordinary contribution to the game. He captains an unchanged line-up at home, where they've scored successive victories without conceding a point. Back the total points unders I say.

Verdict – Broncos by 14

Result - Broncos 30 defeated Rabbitohs 8

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

One of the perils of tipping early is not knowing who is in and who is out. Last week I convinced myself Greg Bird could get out of his suspension - pretty silly of me in hindsight given he's the most suspended player in the history of the NRL. He didn't play last week and the Titans missed him, so his return for the Bulldogs clash gives the visitors a very real chance of an upset. That said, I'm sticking with the Bulldogs on the basis that their backline is the more potent. Players 1 through 7 for the Bulldogs have scored 23 tries this season, while the Titans backline has scored just nine. Granted the Titans forwards are scoring more tries than the Dogs forwards, but I'm banking on the Bulldogs pack holding their own in front of a supportive crowd. If they can do that the Dogs win and, as Steve Roach used to say, the backs simply determine the size of the margin.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result - Bulldogs 21 defeated Titans 20

Canberra Raiders vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

There's a feeling I get when I look to the Wests that their spirit is crying for leaving. Five losses in succession for the striped cats looks bad and it is, but at least they've competed in most of those games. Take note that their points differential is substantially better than the top eight Raiders. The Raiders aren't exactly firing with two substantial losses in a row, but to give them some credit their opponents in those games are starting to look like genuine top four contenders. I'm certainly not tipping the Raiders with confidence but I'll stick with sticky at home. Raiders just, but it makes me wonder. Ooh....it makes me wonder.

Verdict – Raiders by 2

Result - Raiders 60 defeated Tigers 6

North Queensland Cowboys vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

The Cowboys are undefeated at home this season and in doing so have scored 140 points while conceding just 32. In days of yore visiting teams would look forward to the trip to Townsville, knowing the two points was there for the taking and then a night of free-flowing (and free) silliness was on offer at the Mad Cow after the game. Not any more. Note that the Cowboys have a history of starting the season slowly and building throughout the year. I think we're seeing the same thing this season, but their slow start in 2016 isn't as slow as we've seen in seasons prior. Can they actually be better in 2016 than they were in 2015? JT says yes we can. Watch for a big game from Michael Morgan this weekend - I suspect Mal Meninga will be calling him any day now. In pure footballing terms it's the game of the round. Get there.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Cowboys 32 defeated Eels 16

Cronulla Sharks vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

Seven games down and here is a list of the points scored by the Panthers this season - 22, 16, 23, 12, 20, 18 and 20. One thing you can't accuse the Panthers of is inconsistency. In seasons past 20 points is probably enough to beat the Sharks but not this season. They've scored 99 points in their last three outings, and daytime conditions in front of a vocal home crowd should give their backline every chance to shine. If you're keen to back someone in this, back them to win by 1-12 - I can't imagine there'll be much in it.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Sharks 20 defeated Panthers 18

Newcastle Knights vs Manly Sea Eagles – Monday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

In a season where the Knights aren't likely to have a lot of highlights a victory at home on ANZAC Day would be one of them. On form you can't possibly tip them, even against a Manly side that aren't at their best, but I've a crazy feeling inside that the Knights will lift like stupid on Monday afternoon. A big crowd, an emotional occasion, and a coach who knows how to pull the heart strings and make them sing. Jeremy Smith returns to bolster the pack, the Sims boys will fire and Jarrod Mullen can steer the ship. That's enough to keep them in the game and the steady goalkicking of Trent Hodkinson can get their noses in front. It's a long shot, but I'm shooting regardless.

Verdict – Knights by 2

Result - Sea Eagles 26 defeated Knights 10

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Sydney Roosters – Monday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

I'm sure there are perfectly cromulent reasons why the Roosters are favoured to win this game - if anyone knows what they are please let me know. I thought the Dragons were very good indeed against the Titans last round and you'd expect them to improve again on the back of that effort. Of primary concern is there inability to score points, but their defence should hold against a team that are running last. Note that this is a home game for the Dragons played at the home ground of the Roosters, but the Dragons will have their fare share of the crowd support regardless. On paper the Roosters should be winning, but we've been saying that for weeks. This contest is always a tremendous occasion, and I urge you to make the effort to watch.

Verdict – Dragons by 2

Result - Dragons 20 defeated Roosters 18

Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors – Monday night – AAMI Park

The Storm feel like a thoroughly professional unit desperately trying to keep things together through difficult circumstances. The Warriors feel like a thoroughly unprofessional unit desperately trying to keep things together through difficult circumstances. Given the venue, the occasion, the senior players at the Storm, and yet another line-up change for the Warriors spine I'll stick with the purple machine.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result - Storm 42 defeated Warriors 0

No need to suspend JT when Moses Norman Merrin Soward Lowe Klemmer Roberts and Foran all got of as well if you suspend JT than go back and suspend all these players please

Rocket Ryan's picture

Just looking at the ladder six teams on six points, the Panthers Titans and Warriors are up against top sides this week, only the Eagles and Dragons play sides not in the top eight, my tip is the Eagles to be in the top eight by Monday night, and with the Eels about to be hit with the sledgehammer they will be further entrenched, South Sydney have left the door open and the party crashers are coming!

Baggy_Gee's picture

As a said, either do it for all, or don't even bother. That Panthers guy was exactly the same, conversational touching, JT's was that as well. We need to respect the ref's, while holding them to account, but that has to come with consistency in the execution of the law.

I wonder who will be the first reporter that Ricky Stewart murders for goading him into talking about the Bunker in a negative way?

tigerholic's picture

I didn't want to say this but I will anyway. If the Eels get stripped of 8 points then that is a lesson that the leadership group at Parra needs to learn.

Give the 8 points to the Tigers and I would almost bet that the Tigers would still miss the eight, not real positive from a loyal supporter I know.

Keep an eye on the tips as I think I am going to put my faith back in the Tiggers this week against the raiders:)

Rocket Ryan's picture

Tigerholoc I doubt you qualify as a loyal supporter it takes more than a fancy set of number plates to support a team as the pototo said you shy away from the Tigers too much for mine.

Coach Potato's picture

a, you haven't said anything about Mckendry. Should have been suspended or not?

Coach Potato's picture

Rocket, the only teams that have matched it against Broncos and/or Cowboys are Sharks, Eels, and Panthers.

Panthers have matched it so far against all of the above, except for Sharks who they play this week. Why wouldn't aren't they included in this group? Geez I hope they do the Sharks and start forcing people to take some notice.

Coach Potato's picture

There's a player in the NRL from Grafton.
Yes, Grafton NSW as opposed to Macksville, Qld.
He's got a great stride. Hard to put down. Always busts a tackle or two. Super under the high ball. In other words, a handful. He doesn't get much plaudits though.

I'm sure if Freddy and Loz were listening, or reading should I say, they would be starting to watch the form of one Anthony Don. I think he'd be great in a Blues jumper. Utility back. Number 15 or 16. I'd give him a run.

Watch out Bulldogs, he's gonna continue his good form against you.

BigPeteBx's picture

G'day Tipsters.
Hope u r all well.
Mne for Round 8 are Broncos, Bulldogs, Raiders, Cowboys, Sharks, Sea Eagles, Roosters and Storm.

Hope you all have a nice deserved long weekend and take time on ANZAC Day to remember those who fought for this Country.

Cheers and keep well - Big Pete in WNSW

BigPeteBx's picture

Agree with you there Coach P - it would be great to see Ranieri get The Foxes a well earnt title. My lot, Man Utd, are edging for a Top 4 and who wouldnt want to see a struggling club of lower divisons of the past win the EPL this season. They need to play extra hard now they have lost Vardy this week. At home to Swansea this week and then off to Old Trafford next week.

Coach Potato's picture

Just hope that Carrington Park, Bathurst is a footy field not an ice skating rink next weekend when Panthers host the Raiders. Why the hell would you host a team that loves the cold ? Should've played Cowboys there.

The Thinker's picture

Not just Grafton Coach....he played for the mighty Grafton Ghosts.

Outstanding team name.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Coach the panthers aren't getting respect from people for a number of reasons their last game against the roosters did not help they do however have some great players who are i reckon underpreforming you know this week is a big game for your club i just said manly didnt have to play a top 8 club of course a win also puts the panthers in the 8 courtesy of the broncos who have downed an impressive rabbit outfit

Coach Potato's picture

Talk about horse shit coming out the other end.

Coach Potato's picture

So Adam Reynolds puts his hand on Jared Maxwell's upper arm protesting he was obstructed. What are you going to do one week on NRL? I got my money's on nothing.

Different rules for high profile teams is what it comes down to.

Coach Potato's picture

Dear NRL (not that I'm sincere about the Dear bit)

Can you please get rid of Maxwell?

Falling down on a tackled player is not a penalty. Sure, Burgess was rough about it, but that's footy. Broncos had no right to react to something they would have no issue doing themselves (yes that would include you Adam Blair you dirtbag)

Before Burgess had even made his dive, Broncos should have been done for a voluntary tackle. These never get called but its in the rules. Like taping a TV show, its illegal but noone ever gets done. The player who dives on the ball then simply waits for someone to tackle them - that's the most blatant voluntary tackle you will see. (The player has volunteered to be tackled right?) Penalty. Joe Ofahengaue had no thought to promote the footy, only to wait to be tackled. He volunteered. He wasn't hurt. If the ball had been a foot away from the Souths tryline he wouldn't have dived on the ball and not moved.

Even if that gets missed, it should still be a penalty against Broncos for overreacting to a player being tackled, not high, and not late (only late in terms of too late to call a voluntary tackle!)

Earlier Adam Reynolds touched his arm, basically tries to get his attention to ask a question. That's the contrary conduct matter he made a complaint about only last week. Yet he did not want to brouch the subject. I saw him mouth the words 'dont go there', as if to give a warning to Reynolds. Sam McKendry didn't get any similar warning. Why not? He is paid to be a referee and keep the same level of interpretation week in week out, not week here, week there.

So why are you still paying him anything?

a's picture

I will be at the Cpwboys game tonight

a's picture

Cowboys game I mean

Coach Potato's picture

Freudian typo?
What's wrong with C-Pow-Boys ?

BigPeteBx's picture

Agree there Mark.

If the problem is in the backrooms and most of it is, hit Mgt/Executive with it. Sweetheart deals don't exist or belong on the paddock.
Why be cruel to supporters whose bums on seats, keep the turnstiles ticking and creates the revenue that NRL/Clubs survive with.
As you say, they play for nothing when points are taken away and what really have the followers got to support, apart from a team trying to play catch-up footy.

Which then brings me to another raw nerve - Golden Point.
Bloody Americanised game crept in. They had shootouts in NASL as paying customers wanted to walk out of the ground/stadium with a result.

Cheers mate and have a nice weekend.
Big Pete in WNSW

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes mate - hasn't been too bad here, as we are having a late Summer.
The past two days have been a little breezy and we had a light showering, which brought along the "freshness".

Raiders are certainly an unpredictable team in Canberra on a cold/frosty/icy Saturday night, so we'll see what they bring with them to good Old Bathurst "town".
Cowboys here would have certainly had the Full House sign up.

That's the way the draw is, along with what game goes to a regional area as our Bathurst Council and Panthers/NRL have an agreement in place that one Panthers home game, per season comes to Bathurst for 5 years. Me thinks we have about two left.

Whack on your "Jockey-Johnsons" and I'll see you there.

Cheers - Big Pete in Bx

BigPeteBx's picture

Good Saturday morning Sawmills, nice meeting you in a love of another footy code, getting a mention.
This weekend sees both FA Cup semi-finals being played. We'll see what eventuates.

Round 8 in NRL, could be a bit of an opener upper, with a couple of close ones possible. Good luck with yours. I have picked similar except TigPies. Have a nice weekend.

Cheers - Big Pete in Bx (WNSW)

Cowboys will win tonight

Baggy_Gee's picture

Have the points come from penalties or just being out played? The multi Billion Dollar t.v. deal isn't providing coverage.

Tailspin's picture

Hey Thinker, sorry but I've changed my mind with next weeks picks and it is changing from useless Tigers to the Bunnies, hope that is alright. Obviously they are shot ducks, how bad was that performance.
Go the mighty Cowboys.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Gah............. at least we competed better than most teams tonight. It looked good at 16-14. But again we dropped to many points in bunches. Ah well we'll get another crack at them come the finals. Lets see if if the BOYS can get up after a bit of a bad beat, and the rubbish NRL ruling.

Johnny Ray's picture

Godamn Eels. They can't even win a game when they're cheating. Not that I'm gonna get too upset. The Bears NSW Cup game was on today that will always cheer me up. God I miss North Sydney ... :(

Rocket Ryan's picture

Tigerholic,Tigerholic,Tigerholic, where are you,R-U-OK, has anybody seen the tragic tigerholic in their travels, I seek him here I seek him there!

Rocket Ryan's picture

The Eels couldn't cut it when the Cowboys turned up the heat, looks like another all Queensland showcase coming up at the big dance.

Coach Potato's picture

Ok everyone. I have the answer to Golden Point. NRL please listen. I have it.

It's easy. Simple. Doesn't change the Golden Point format at all. Still allows for field goals. Promotes tries to be scored. Lots more Golden tries will be scored. Increases ball turnover so excitement factor also increases. The answer is?

Add a "Golden Point only" rule which says a field goal can only be taken outside the 30m mark. Once a team passes that mark they would naturally go for a try instead unless they want to snap it back 20. Missing a field goal is also a bit less of a death sentence for that team, because they know that although the other team has the ball, they too, must go for either a try or shoot from outside the 30.

I think even Wayne Bennett would be happy with this change.

Take yesterday's game, you would have seen Morris's long range attempt as legitimate, but Reynolds winner not. From 23m out, Reynolds would have been forced to do something else.

Thinker, and others - what do you think?

Coach Potato's picture

To be fair to Tigerholic, he has actually tipped the Tigers 4 times out of 8. Just sadly, he's yet to correctly tip a win for his own team. Probably now wondering when that will be.

Coach Potato's picture

I don't disagree with the Norman sin-binning but what right did Sutton have to make an initial call of TRY, when from 5 metres away, he saw the ball drop from 3 feet. He was clearly trying to influence a penalty try. Again, not that I would have disagreed with that either, but either he blows a penalty try, or he says no try, ball not grounded, check for penalty try. Can't have $2 each way mate.

tigerholic's picture

Morning Folks

To avoid the wrath of Coach , I know I have to make some sort of comment. Yesterday was one of the darkest days as a Tigers supporter and Tigers member, I feel even worse than 88 and 89.

Again I question Jason Taylor's ability as a coach, what he said in the press conference "that effort was not good enough tonight", fuckin Rocket Ryan could even come up with a better comment after a devastating result. I also realise that it is not him out on the field missing tackles, offering attempted tackles that a girl guide could do better but come on!!!!

To be a real fan, you have to take the ups and downs, obviously the Tigers are in for a lot more downs. Feel free to take a shot at the Tigers and Tigerholic, I have no defence nor do I have any answers:(

Baggy_Gee's picture

When I saw the send off offence, I was ok with it. But I do argee and wish to echo Brad Arthur's question, where is the consistency. Others have done that and stayed on the field. Would it have changed the result at 20 - 16? probably not, but who can say. We were playing one of the better sides at home so it was always going to be uphill. But lets get on with it, find out weather the NRL has it in for us this year like the Sharks were dudded previously.

Coach Potato's picture

Sad to say, Tigers are now an emanation, a result of team disharmony, not working as a team, not playing as a team, not caring about winning or losing. Farah, I'm pointing a finger at you.

christine's picture

I believe a lot of the problems with tigers at the moment is because of farah some of the players want him gone but he won't go ...

christine's picture

And further more mark o'neil what ever your doing as football manager at tigers isn't working , you need to fix it ...

Rocket Ryan's picture

Golden point itself is the problem what percentage of games would be settled with extra time each way it would probably still be a field goalathon but the first one wouldn't necessarily win the game with your idea coach teams would just push inside the 20 then pass back to the 30 and fireaway.

Coach Potato's picture

Broncos are united in being against Golden Point. Maybe if they won a Grand Final in extra time it would change people's tune. Unfortunately sore losing is part of their culture from the coach through to the fans.

a's picture

Cowboys are the best they will win back to back

Coach Potato's picture

Well done Sharks. Just far too good for us, hey Rocket?

Sharks beat us by 2 (a side meant to finish bottom 4) so you guys should have no problems doing them by about 20 next week.

Coach Potato's picture

Dont hear many (at all) kicking Penrith now. The only team that has competed with Broncos, Cowboys, Parra, and now Sharks, not to mention three of the four games were away games. Leading all these games at some stage with the clock winding down. They surely can't be fluking it.

Thinker, would Panthers still be overachieving in your books if they were in the mix come September?

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
By 'in the mix' do you mean top 8....or a premiership contender?

Coach Potato's picture

A =ing B

Coach Potato's picture

..and considering there's a good chance that 8 teams apart from Parra will be in the semis this year.

Panthers will not make the finals this year
