Round fourteen selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Canberra Raiders – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

I said it once before but it bears repeating - the Raiders are not my friend. They were patchy last round, at times brilliant and at other times scrappy, but it was good enough last week against the Sea Eagles. Note that the Sea Eagles were down to one player on the bench for the last 20 minutes, and played most of the second half without Cherry-Evans, Lyon and Lawrence. We'll need more of that Raiders brilliance this time. The Broncos, in recent weeks, haven't been my friend either, with three losses from their last four starts. Sam Thaiday started the season on the bench, but he's gradually worked his way to the front of the scrum. Travis Waddell has big shoes to fill in the weeks ahead - I imagine he'll take a simple game plan into the match and let Milford and Hunt dance their dance. As a rule I take on the Raiders away from home, particularly against the better sides. Their record at Suncorp in recent years isn't great either.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Broncos 26 defeated Raiders 18

Wests Tigers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

I'm not sure which side has the tougher back-up. The Rabbitohs return from an extra-time loss in Perth while the Tigers never looked likely in the heavy going in Sydney. It looks like Robbie Farah is playing on Friday night but who really knows - surely Farah-gate is having a de-stabilising effect on the club. The Tigers usually win without Farah but that didn't happen against the Chooks. They usually lose with him so let's see if they can defy recent history again. Oddly enough, the only game the Tigers have won with Farah this year was in round nine against (you guessed it) the Rabbitohs. They won that game without Woods, Grant and Moses and with Lawrence playing in the halves. Despite that the Tigers are rank outsiders and I think they're backable (mind you I said that last weekend). I haven't had much luck tipping outsiders in recent rounds but here I go again.

Verdict – Tigers by 2

Result - Tigers 30 defeated Rabbitohs 14

Newcastle Knights vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

Clearly my criticism of the Warriors last week was the wake-up call they needed, as the greatest enigma in sport burst into life and played the type of spirited football we all wish they could deliver every week. Was the win over the Broncos a one-off or are the Warriors about to start one of those mid-season runs we often see during 'Origin season'? I doubt we'll be much wiser after this game, because even a lack-lustre Warriors should be too good for the rebuilding Knights.

Verdict – Warriors by 16

Result - Warriors 50 defeated Knights 14

Parramatta Eels vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – TIO Stadium

One of these teams is facing a crisis, and it's not the Gold Coast Titans. Most of us had them pegged as wooden spooners this season, yet here they are in the top eight. Meanwhile the Eels lurch from one drama to the next. Their marquee signing looks more like a used tent right now. Foran is out for the season with injury, welfare issues and legal battles to contend with. Corey Norman might not be far behind. Eels coach Brad Arthur appears to be the only one holding the club together on and off the field. It has to be a distraction, and to add to the madness he's got an interstate trip to the Top End to manage. Titans...specials.

Verdict – Titans by 10

Result - Eels 22 defeated Titans 12

Sydney Roosters vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Allianz Stadium

Roosters fans (and you know who you are) may be rejoicing after the solid win over the Tigers on the weekend but I'm here to give you all (and you know who you are) a dose of reality. The Chooks have won three games this season, and the teams they've beaten are currently 10th, 14th and 16th on the ladder. This Saturday night they take on a team at the top of the tree. The purple machine hasn't lost a game since round six and they won't be losing this either. That said, I'm looking forward to the battle of the forwards. Waerea-Hargreaves is improving with each performance and he and Napa will be licking their lips as they prepare to take on the biggest pack of forwards they are ever likely to face. Note that the Storm snared two handy signatures during the week - Addo-Carr from the Tigers and Asofa-Solomona has kept the All Blacks away and stayed purple. It's only a matter of time before Cronk commits to a life in purple too. The Storm are $1.50 to beat the Chooks. It's a gift.

Verdict – Storm by 13

Result - Storm 46 defeated Roosters 0

Manly Sea Eagles vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – Brookvale Oval

The Panthers record at Brookvale is poor, but the Sea Eagles record at Brookvale this season is even worse. They've won just once at home this season and that was way back in round three. That said, their last two losses at home were to the Broncos and the Cowboys, and I'd argue the Panthers are a rung down from that level. Both sides bring inexperienced halves combinations to this game. The Panthers have gone with a couple of Generation next-ers with Cartwight (not John) and Cleary (not Ivan) while the Sea Eagles are giving Koroisau and Walker another chance. These Sunday afternoon games at Brookvale used to pick themselves but not this season - I'll take the Panthers, but not confidently so. The Sea Eagles with the handicap start may tempt me.

Verdict – Penrith by 2

Result - Panthers 31 defeated Sea Eagles 24

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

This is the second game at ANZ Stadium this round where the away team is playing at their home ground. I've struggled to get a read on both these sides this season but the Bulldogs went within a whisker of beating the Sharks last Monday night. A repeat of anything like that performance and they'll be too good this Monday night.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result - Bulldogs 34 defeated Dragons 16

Cronulla Sharks vs North Queensland Cowboys – Monday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

We're saving the best for last this round. Michael Morgan returns for the Cowboys and both sides have effectively named their best seventeen. These sides met in round one where the Cowboys prevailed 20-14 in an even contest. Both sides have improved since that performance but most of the Cowboys best efforts have been at home. They've won just two from six away games this season, and those wins were against sides outside the top eight. Meanwhile the Sharks have won eight games in a row and haven't lost at home all season. They beat the Storm at home. They beat the Broncos at home, and I think they'll beat the Cowboys at home. You don't need me to tell you, but it's the game of the round.

Verdict – Sharks by 2

Result - Sharks 13 defeated Cowboys 10

hi guys
In nice and early this week along with Ric & Chooks
Broncos to bounce back.
Rabbits to just get the Tiges.
Warriors over the Knights.
Titans to have another win.
Storm to beat the Roosters.
Panthers to beat the depleted Eagles.
Dogs a big win over the Dragons.
Cowboys to hand Sharkies a loss.
All away teams except for the Broncs. They really need to win this one.
Hey Newbie I watched the Titans/Rabbits and the camera zoomed in on the crowd and there was this guy in a "I love Thailand" t eating an icecream. Was that you mate?
Good luck to

mark ashford's picture

Sorry left off "all this week. Hope your team wins"

mark ashford's picture

OK it's just 2 weeks out to the next origin. AND the Broncos are doing it tough. Storm and Cowboys are going Ok.
Rocket has shown his support but need to hear from you Bronco Swimmer.
Get on the keyboard and give us something.
Despite what others say this site has more NSW supporters than QLDers.
So come on swimmer have a go.

tigerholic's picture

Hey Mark

I don't think Bronco Swimmer is much of a typist, not sure if she has posted anything at all.

Seaeagle47's picture

G'day Mark, mate i might follow the mighty SEAEAGLES, but definately a QUEENSLANDER. I think your wrong about the eagles this week & for the punters out there EAGLES 1-13 is a safe bet.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Sea Eagle 47 you picked a good week to tip the Eagles, Hook has plenty on his plate, still young Cleary looks the goods, but I see the Panthers have dropped Soward, he was not alone in an ordinary performance last week, Cartwright to the halves, I can only assume he has graduated from the academy with an A for field goals.

Tailspin's picture

Hey everyone, my picks are easy this week
All away teams except the broncos, hope they improve.
hope you all have a great weekend.

mark ashford's picture

Seaeagle 47 Mate I like the Eagles mainly because of DCE and more recently Miles but you guys unfortunately have a few big names out and the Panthers are going ok.
They do struggle without DCE and Jamie Lyon has lost that bit of pace.
Tigerholic...yes you're right mate had a bit of a look back and couldn't find anything from the "swimmer"
So come on Bronco Swimmer here's your chance put finger to keyboard I promise it doesn't hurt and you'll enjoy the fun!

Here are my tips

Broncos by 10 I think on Thursday night Broncos are going to strike back with a win over Raiders

Rabbitohs by 10 I think Rabbitohs are going to win against the Tigers here

Warriors by 4 I think Warriors are going to win in a thriller

Titans by 1 I think Titans are going to win in a thriller here

Storm by 10 I think Storm are going to win in a thriller

Panthers by 6 I think Panthers are going to continue Panthers misery

Bulldogs by 10 I think Bulldogs are going to win here

Cowboys by 1 Remember can Cowboys won 11 in a row and guess who broke our streak the Sharks well we are going to do it here

mark ashford's picture

Tailspin and "a" we've all gone the same this week. Must be a QLDer thing! Lets hope for an 8/8
Cowboys to break the sharks winning streak.
Broncs to bounce back.
And the Titans to make it a QLD trifecta.
Go Queensland.

Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Broncos by 4- Broncos just will be too good here.

Rabbitohs by 8- Rabbitohs will be too good here and they'll get the win.

Warriors by 14- Warriors way too good in this one.
Titans by 4- Titans in an absolute thriller.

Storm by 16- Storm are in the best of form at the moment and even though Roosters won last week, Liu is out and Cordner is still out so Storm to win big here.

Panthers by 8- Panthers will be too good here. Manly have a way too depleted side compared to the Panthers.

Dragons by 2- Dragons to get the win in a close one.

And finally... Sharks by 7- Sharks to make it 10 in a row and make an even bigger statement to the rest of the teams here.

Awesome. That's done. Good luck with your tips everyone. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S GO THE DRAGONS WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Good onya Mark! Nah, wasn’t eating an icecream mate. Sensitive teeth normally excludes me doing so. Whoever that guy was I’m certain of 2 things:

1) He’s a good bloke who knows what’s important in life
2) He’s definitely not as handsome as me!

Just realised too that we both have the same tips across the board. Am I getting the hang of it or has your form started to slip bro’? Just kiddin… Tailspin’s the same. So too our friend “a”. Geez, this is getting scary!

OK, let’s move on and see if we can tip some winners this week…

Broncos - the Broncos disappointed last week as did the second half “switch off” from the Raiders. Broncos but only ‘cos they’re at home.

Rabbitohs - some would argue the Bunnies were a tad unlucky last week but I’m thinking they should bounce (or maybe hop) back into the winners circle this time around.

Warriors - underestimated them big time last week. Bet ya JR is over the moon. I’m jumpin’ on while I can.

Titans - yeah, the Boss summed it up beautifully. Titans for me.

Storm - again, the Boss has this one sussed (unfortunately for me). As much as it breaks my heart to do so, I’ve gotta tip the Storm Troopers here. Mind you, I’ll gladly (very gladly) sacrifice the tipping point should a miracle happen.

Panthers - not quite sure what to make of this one. Only 2 points apart on the ladder I see but Manly’s points differential worries me. Then again, the way they fought back last week was encouraging. Nah, Panthers for me.

Bulldogs - based on last week I might just “double up” on the Doggies this weekend.

Cowboys - eventually the Sharks are gonna lose at home and I’m taking a punt it will happen this week. Yes, the Sharkies have been impressive so far and hats off to them for that but I’ll risk it and go the Cowboys. Yee-Hah!

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Cheers.

P.S. Why are there no 'B' batteries? Hmmm…

BroncoSwimmer's picture

Excuse me Tigeraholic, at least I rate your team now and then and TIP em! Mark Ashford my keyboard has been spit polished and ready to comment.
Lets hope the Bronc's have a good game tonight, those raiders have some slippery players, so the Bronc's will need to be alert, and do lots defending I feel.

mark ashford's picture

NEWBIE I love ya style mate. There are B size batteries. I've got one in my car. It's B for bulls--t battery!
BRONCO SWIMMER great to hear from you.
The Broncs will bounce back tonight. Even the KING has tipped them.
NEWBIE one more thing that guy with the icecream was a pretty good looking bloke. Must put you in the Brad Pitt league!!!!

" a " just saw in tweets james tamou is leaving cowboys for a Sydney club & it looks like it's a four year deal with Penrith .

a's picture

Really hope he stays but I rather him leave then Coote Morgan JT Feldt Scott and any I may have missed

tigerholic's picture

I am in shock, BroncoSwimmer has come out and put fingers to a keyboard somewhere in this great country. Well done Broncoswimmer great to hear from you.

tigerholic's picture

Still no Coach, Rocket Ryan can you please apologise to Coach, maybe that will bring him back.

mark ashford's picture

Yes Christine and "a" James Tamou is leaving to go to Penrith in 2017.
He's been a great player for the Cows and NSW.
Guess the Cowboys cap couldn't keep him.
He will be a great asset for the Panthers.
BUT don't worry "a" you will still have a formidable team in 2017.
Queensland Queen how can you tip against the Broncs with your name?
Broncs to dust off the Raiders by 10 points.

BroncoSwimmer's picture

tut tut qld queen...................go the broncos.................

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening Thinkers and Tippers.
Have a good round and here's mine for Round 14.
Broncos, Tigers, Warriors, Titans, Storm, Manly, Bulldogs and Sharks.

Manly have some guns out and now Matai gone for season with neck injury.
But I'll take them at Brooky to do it by 2pts.

Cheers folks and keep well
Big Pete in Bx

Baggy_Gee's picture

Hey Thinker, with my tips in at 7:47 is my Thursday night selection valid? Happy with whatever is the ruling.

YES Broncos Swimmer that's what we love to see.
Half time and Broncs up by 18 nil. The boys are going well.
Just gotta hold on in the second half and we're home.
Thinker how about a welcome to Bronco Swimmer?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Thanks for that. Just changed jobs and am on phone only for a fortnight.

mark ashford's picture

There you go Bronco fans a great win for the boys.
Two huge guys Pappali & Paulo couldn't break our defence.
Probably our best win of the season.
A bye next weekend, gives the boys time to recover.
Go you mighty Broncs.
THANK YOU Bronco Swimmer. keep them posts coming!

Rocket Ryan's picture

Panthers have got their cowboy lots of cash are they going to be the eels of 2017 lots of stars and still under the cap we wonder how you wont hear coach pototo question that.

Coach Potato's picture

Congratulations Qld.

I see you've done a super bang up job in just a week and a day's absence. This page is going from strength to strength. Extra Qlders to chat with, full marks I say. Go all the Qld teams and bugger off the rest. I'm sure that attitude guarantees this page doesn't spiral into oblivion.
Looking just fine at the moment.

Regards and in the throws of signing off,
Coach Potato.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Thought that would work coach

christine's picture

Good to see you back coach now we just have to get jr back ...

Coach Potato's picture

Signing off means not coming back.

a's picture

Please don't leave Coach

Rocket Ryan's picture

Coach you cant leave tigerholic you know in a battle of witts he is unarmed, you also have blues man bigpete from south of the north pole north of the south pole east of perth and west of Brisbane somewhere but he is one of yours and your not setting them a good example for NSW.

newbie from perth's picture

@ Mark Ashford

Ha-ha! Mate, Brad Pitt wishes he was half as good looking as me! He mentions it every time we catch up for a beer. Just ask any “good” girl in Chiang Mai and they’ll tell you just how handsome I am. On top of that I’m a very humble person as well. OK, I think I’d better leave it at that. Nearly 7am here in rainy and cold Perth and I should really check emails (I’m sitting at my desk at work). Might get myself a coffee to warm up a bit.

Enjoy the footy and your day off on Monday. We don’t get it off unfortunately but hey, them’s the breaks eh?

Good to see the Coach resurface. Need his “encouragement” here absolutely. Now all we need is for JR to come back and things will be back to normal (or close to it). Cheers.

christine's picture

Coach if you were signing off you would not have come back to comment so don't sign off there is no need to just stick around ok ...

Rocket Ryan's picture

It would appear the outback jacks now have to play without a coach

christine's picture

|If that's the way it is then that's the way it is , there isn't anything we can do about it but see if things change I mean coach did put his tips in for this round so just wait & see what he does ...

a's picture

Yes I want you to stay Coach

christine's picture

Coach I can't believe you won't be on the site for the next origin game , c'mon coach do you really want QLD to win ?

a's picture

Yeah Coach I really want you here

mark ashford's picture

TIGERHOLIC
Great game by the Tiges. Probably their best this year. Never looked like losing.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Thought that with the up and down nature of the Tigers and Rabbits this year I had picked a winner with the Bunnies. But some of those tries the Tigers put on were slick.

Baggy_Gee's picture

A hat trick to David Fusitua in ten minutes, and its good Knight to them. Shame that a young team copes a thrashing on a regular basis.

Tailspin's picture

Hey coach, I never picked you for a quitter, I am a Queenslander but we are all Australian, I really enjoy your comments and remarks and that's what makes this a great game, I'm pretty sure I'm not alone when I say it's great to have you here on this site putting in your valued comments. I may not agree with them all but its still the input that gives us great enjoyment. Harden up princess and keep on keeping on, go QLD to win the title again and of course the mighty Cowboys , back me up here A.
