Brisbane Broncos vs Canberra Raiders – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium
I said it once before but it bears repeating - the Raiders are not my friend. They were patchy last round, at times brilliant and at other times scrappy, but it was good enough last week against the Sea Eagles. Note that the Sea Eagles were down to one player on the bench for the last 20 minutes, and played most of the second half without Cherry-Evans, Lyon and Lawrence. We'll need more of that Raiders brilliance this time. The Broncos, in recent weeks, haven't been my friend either, with three losses from their last four starts. Sam Thaiday started the season on the bench, but he's gradually worked his way to the front of the scrum. Travis Waddell has big shoes to fill in the weeks ahead - I imagine he'll take a simple game plan into the match and let Milford and Hunt dance their dance. As a rule I take on the Raiders away from home, particularly against the better sides. Their record at Suncorp in recent years isn't great either.
Verdict – Broncos by 4
Result - Broncos 26 defeated Raiders 18
Wests Tigers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium
I'm not sure which side has the tougher back-up. The Rabbitohs return from an extra-time loss in Perth while the Tigers never looked likely in the heavy going in Sydney. It looks like Robbie Farah is playing on Friday night but who really knows - surely Farah-gate is having a de-stabilising effect on the club. The Tigers usually win without Farah but that didn't happen against the Chooks. They usually lose with him so let's see if they can defy recent history again. Oddly enough, the only game the Tigers have won with Farah this year was in round nine against (you guessed it) the Rabbitohs. They won that game without Woods, Grant and Moses and with Lawrence playing in the halves. Despite that the Tigers are rank outsiders and I think they're backable (mind you I said that last weekend). I haven't had much luck tipping outsiders in recent rounds but here I go again.
Verdict – Tigers by 2
Result - Tigers 30 defeated Rabbitohs 14
Newcastle Knights vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium
Clearly my criticism of the Warriors last week was the wake-up call they needed, as the greatest enigma in sport burst into life and played the type of spirited football we all wish they could deliver every week. Was the win over the Broncos a one-off or are the Warriors about to start one of those mid-season runs we often see during 'Origin season'? I doubt we'll be much wiser after this game, because even a lack-lustre Warriors should be too good for the rebuilding Knights.
Verdict – Warriors by 16
Result - Warriors 50 defeated Knights 14
Parramatta Eels vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – TIO Stadium
One of these teams is facing a crisis, and it's not the Gold Coast Titans. Most of us had them pegged as wooden spooners this season, yet here they are in the top eight. Meanwhile the Eels lurch from one drama to the next. Their marquee signing looks more like a used tent right now. Foran is out for the season with injury, welfare issues and legal battles to contend with. Corey Norman might not be far behind. Eels coach Brad Arthur appears to be the only one holding the club together on and off the field. It has to be a distraction, and to add to the madness he's got an interstate trip to the Top End to manage. Titans...specials.
Verdict – Titans by 10
Result - Eels 22 defeated Titans 12
Sydney Roosters vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Allianz Stadium
Roosters fans (and you know who you are) may be rejoicing after the solid win over the Tigers on the weekend but I'm here to give you all (and you know who you are) a dose of reality. The Chooks have won three games this season, and the teams they've beaten are currently 10th, 14th and 16th on the ladder. This Saturday night they take on a team at the top of the tree. The purple machine hasn't lost a game since round six and they won't be losing this either. That said, I'm looking forward to the battle of the forwards. Waerea-Hargreaves is improving with each performance and he and Napa will be licking their lips as they prepare to take on the biggest pack of forwards they are ever likely to face. Note that the Storm snared two handy signatures during the week - Addo-Carr from the Tigers and Asofa-Solomona has kept the All Blacks away and stayed purple. It's only a matter of time before Cronk commits to a life in purple too. The Storm are $1.50 to beat the Chooks. It's a gift.
Verdict – Storm by 13
Result - Storm 46 defeated Roosters 0
Manly Sea Eagles vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – Brookvale Oval
The Panthers record at Brookvale is poor, but the Sea Eagles record at Brookvale this season is even worse. They've won just once at home this season and that was way back in round three. That said, their last two losses at home were to the Broncos and the Cowboys, and I'd argue the Panthers are a rung down from that level. Both sides bring inexperienced halves combinations to this game. The Panthers have gone with a couple of Generation next-ers with Cartwight (not John) and Cleary (not Ivan) while the Sea Eagles are giving Koroisau and Walker another chance. These Sunday afternoon games at Brookvale used to pick themselves but not this season - I'll take the Panthers, but not confidently so. The Sea Eagles with the handicap start may tempt me.
Verdict – Penrith by 2
Result - Panthers 31 defeated Sea Eagles 24
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium
This is the second game at ANZ Stadium this round where the away team is playing at their home ground. I've struggled to get a read on both these sides this season but the Bulldogs went within a whisker of beating the Sharks last Monday night. A repeat of anything like that performance and they'll be too good this Monday night.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 4
Result - Bulldogs 34 defeated Dragons 16
Cronulla Sharks vs North Queensland Cowboys – Monday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium
We're saving the best for last this round. Michael Morgan returns for the Cowboys and both sides have effectively named their best seventeen. These sides met in round one where the Cowboys prevailed 20-14 in an even contest. Both sides have improved since that performance but most of the Cowboys best efforts have been at home. They've won just two from six away games this season, and those wins were against sides outside the top eight. Meanwhile the Sharks have won eight games in a row and haven't lost at home all season. They beat the Storm at home. They beat the Broncos at home, and I think they'll beat the Cowboys at home. You don't need me to tell you, but it's the game of the round.
Verdict – Sharks by 2
Result - Sharks 13 defeated Cowboys 10
Wally Lewis - round fourteen selections (in bold)

Gotta feel for the Knights. Well stitched up by the warriors who continued their red hot form that beat the Broncos
Looks like our bros from NZ have finally come to play.
Half time Eels/Titans looks pretty even with maybe the Eels going a bit better. Interesting second half coming up.
COACH if your reading this I'll ad my request that you return to posting here.
We need your balance, particularly at origin time.
Anyway mate it's all fun. That's why we are all here.

Finally hanging tough with the BOYS pays off, looking good for the win against a team that has been racking up the wins against the other contenders. CARN THE BOYS!!!!!!!
Submitted by mark ashford on
Yes Baggy well done the Eels Titans are no easy beats this season.
Does anyone know what happened on Friday about the Eels loss of points ? I read it was to be finalised yesterday.
For mine I hope it doesn't happen.
They are very much in it this year and surely they are now under the cap. So why can't they play for points?
Storm continuing their winning way. Who will beat them?
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
The Eels will beat them. With a stick, as they sleep. It seems that that maybe the only way that they are beatable. A good team playing a winning brand of football.
Submitted by a on
Yes Cowboys will win and Queensland
Comment if you agree you do not want Coach to quit but remember I think he did this once last year too but ended up coming back

Morning Folks
I am very happy to see the style of footy that my Tigers played on Friday night, I thought Souths would roll right over the top of us, and no I did not tip them again.
I did tip the bloody Titans and what happens, they crash and burn, thats footy.
Coach, great to see you made a small comeback on this site, We are going to have one more go at getting you back to commenting regularly again.
I'm with "a" in asking for everyone that uses and enjoys this site to post either a "yes" or "no" if they think Coach should come back. Come on Coach, State of Origin is coming again soon and I will need your support against the dreaded Maroon army.
"Yes" from me
Have a great Sunday folks, off to Golf for 36 holes of mixed foursomes.

What website would there be if we all just gave up like that ?
Submitted by a on
Yes exactly like all website we all go thought hard time on each website its no different or Facebook or Twitter I think we should let no one Drag us Down and just have fun using it
Submitted by christine on
Coach did do the same thing last year but not to the same extent he did come back but it's up to coach what coach does & if he comes back then great he's welcome & if he doesn't then there isn't anything we can do about it , it's entirely up to coach ...

Yes, It would be good to hear from him on all matters football related.

Manly giving the Panthers a football lesson 20/4 at half time.
Dylan Walker playing like a champion.
Maybe Laurie Daly wasn't so silly after all (despite all the knockers).
Just didn't give him any time and played him out of position.
Manly with no DCE or Lyon Panthers at full strength.
What a fickle game our RL is.
C'mon COACH get on here and support your team.
Mansour is and Peachy should be in NSW SOO team.

Coach looking for a bridge panthers a rabble
Submitted by mark ashford on
Well RL is a fickle game. Panthers come back to win. Biggest comeback this year!
Penrith should be glad they were playing a depleted Manly.
No other team except maybe the Knights would have let that happen.
Hook has some work to do.

What a poor state this site is in just 10 days on.
Still so much rubbish written and noone at all is interested. Can you blame them?
Noone except the Knights would have let that happen hey? Pfft.
Short memories. Broncos leading Penrith 22 - 6 after 37 minutes and then go down 17 - 0 from there.
Here's a small clue.
Queenslanders start writing with a little more integrity and I come back. Continue with the rubbish and you can have it to yourselves and you know how that's going.
Going back to game I, I was the one who called the Blues forward pass the second after it happened, but I never heard back anyone admit that Gallen's tackle was fair, that Gagai played the ball sideways, that Bird got his head taken off, that a clear knock shouldn't have been reversed.
Nothing's changed 10 days on.
So change or don't change.
You choose.

Good to see you comment Coach and NSW people can comment if they want anyone is welcome here
Submitted by BigPeteBx on
Hey Rocket - you sound like u r commenting that I live Toowoomba.
Dont you know where Bx is?
Yes I am West of The Sandstone Curtain in NSW.
Quite obvious you've never heard of DJR Racing, FPR or HDT even if there is such a thing as Townsville 500. I know there is, as a guy who helped Townsville Council engineer it, moved North from where I live.
Yes for me - Coach to stay. NSW also needs him.
But, whilst here Coach, you guys came back and Manly should be tested for opiates. Slow working dopes in that second half, which assisted you guys with your win. Eagles were looking good and gave it away. I see why Fortress has gone missing in action.
Mate we have to take what is dished out here, but there are some good topics raised and some biased ones, as well. Thats footy!!!!
So come on Coach and give Kingswood Country and The Nepean what you know well - and start crashing the keyboards. Doesnt need to be as often, because even I am stuck for time. Just do what you do well.
Enough from me as I am only a newey here!!!!

Fortress as well Newbie,
He keeps quite a few honest with his remarks....especially if the traffic flow looks like getting too much one way.
So I take it Newbie, that you still follow Western Reds. If you know the family name Rawlings from there (he played with Reds before the club was dispensed with from ARL). His mother is my first cousin.
Yes Tigerholic - he (Kim) and his brother (Doug), Bruce Gibbs and Mark Latham all played with Wests Mapgies and came from Oberon/Bathurst NSW area. In case some never read in a previous posting of mine, Oberon Tigers is where Gorgeous George Rose is playing RL at in Group 10.

It certainly was Mark - and I, Big Pete (Sth of The Equator and Nth of The Antarctica, tipped them to beat Souths.
Bloody Titans and Manly let me down this round, so far.
Enjoy your Monday mate

Correct Mark -
its all fun, thats why we are here and stick around.
Some giving more stick than others, some making good friends and others a couple of enemies on said topics.
Oh yes, and not to forget the rivalry between North V South. State of Origins prelude to the American Civil War.

I'm happy to join the chorus of voices hoping that Coach hangs around. We probably disagree on more things than we agree on...but that's fine by me.
And besides....we were the only two that tipped the Tigers this round.
As for Johnny Ray.....I haven't been able to touch base with him since his departure. If any of you know the great man, it would be nice if you could confirm that he isn't stuck down a well with no wi-fi.
Submitted by Dragonsfan4ever on
Yeah same, I want Coach to stay. He's a significant member of this site. All the stats, always giving it to those Queenslanders. Who wouldn't want him to stay?
Submitted by The Thinker on
Asking football fans to be balanced and free of bias when it comes to State of Origin is a big ask. Rabbits and Gus use the term 'we' during the call of the game when speaking about NSW...and they're the professionals. Most people are watching the game with their goggles on...and it's hard to take them off - especially when the game is in play.
It's easier to take the goggles off after the game and have a slightly more objective view. I've watched the game a second time, and for the record I, like Kevvie Walters, believe QLD got more of the 50-50 calls in game one. It wasn't so one-sided as to demand a recount and yell 'conspiracy', but it helped the QLD cause. Did it change the result? Probably not, but it helped. Of course it helped.
I've written 13 State of Origin previews on this site, and I've picked the winner 11 times. Does that mean I'm biased? I think that just makes me (mostly) right.
Say what you will about bias or poor decisions by the refs, the fact is that Queensland are the better side at the minute, and they have been for years.
My opinion - I don't think that will change while Paul Gallen is the NSW captain.
Submitted by Rocket Ryan on
Just joking Bigpete, but I know now you wish you were from Toowoomba then you could call yourself a Queenslander, I hadn't thought about the equator that was a good one.
As for the coach, its a no for me, leave him out of it till after Origin, he is obliviously a poor loser and a sook and I cant see that changing this series.
Go Queensland.
Submitted by christine on
I always go for QLD even though I live in NSW but that doesn't mean I want coach to leave the website i mean it's my choice who I take which team I want be it QLD or NSW just the same as it is with tipping each week it's your choice & it's only nature for people to not always agree but that's no reason to not stay on a website coach .
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Thanks Thinker.
You are of course the most respected here, and I appreciate you seeing that more calls than not in game I, were in favour of the visitor.
I wasn't after anyone to say the result should have changed, just a bit of 'let's be honest' about the game.
How telling it is that we give it to the refs and Bunker each week but suddenly stopped after Origin? Just because your team won?? Made people look as bad as the refs themselves but if that's how they wish to be viewed, so be it.
So thanks again, Thinker. My break wasn't anything to do with sour grapes. Just want this page to show some integrity. If people choose not to show any, again that's their choice.
I've been vindicated.
So I'm back.

It is hard to watch you team get the rough end of the stick, and as a NSW supporter who lives in QLD, watching the game with other screaming fanatics hurts. Especially when they perceive that they were hard done by, but expect you to sit by and take it "cause it was the right call." I can't wait for the next 5 weeks so we are over all this nonsense and can get back to the football proper. Speaking of which does anyone barr a and tailspin rate the Cowboys chances in 13 or so degree night south of the border?
Submitted by Coach Potato on
I think Moylan is the bigger danger to Qld.
He goes himself instead of passing to the winger last game he scores. Getting the debut out of the way will do him the world of good. A moment away from breaking the game open and now talk of being dropped. Tedesco a fortnight back from a broken shoulder? Dugan just as bunged up. Stay with the fit one out of these I would say.
Three months ago this 'just' holds a first grade contract, Moses, was calling for U20s to be scrapped. Now he's a friggin State selector. Focus on what you are still only average at, Moses.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Strange species above that border - connecting a wish for scribes to assess games more correctly as egotistical.
If you are one of those who think all the calls Qld's way were correct calls, that's ego for you.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
I agree with the pick the fit ones, Last thing we want is the NSW bench empty because of the risky player we took into the game. Lets choose the best, fittest and come back from 1 nil down and win the series in Brisbane.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Are you sorry you mentioned 'noone except Newcastle', Marcus Einfeld?
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Thinker, are you saying the same thing about the Sharks Premiership chances this year with Gallen as Captain?
Have the Sharks got where they are, carrying a liability?
Submitted by BigPeteBx on
Its the fit ones that matter Baggy. Brisbane can be the start of that win for us Blues, then back to Sydney for the decider.
Its flamin senseless taking injury prone players into big matches like SoO.
You could lose them in the first five minutes or seconds for that matter.
Go The Blues!
It'll be tight, but we've won there before.

Evening folks,
I've updated the tipping comp and will be updating the NRL ladder shortly.
Most of us picked 5 or 6 this round, apart from some nutjob named 'The Thinker' who jagged 7 from 8 this round.
You know what they say - even a broken clock gets to be right twice a day.
Nick and Rik are tied for first, with Footy Chick desperately trying to get to third so we can have an all-rhyming threesome at the top.
I'll have the round 15 preview page published tomorrow and will have my previews and tips published on Wednesday morning.
All the best

Welcome back Coach.
Must say that The Sharks certainly played the last 8 minutes tonight, with a strategy. Use kicks to advantage, use time and keep the ball down Cowboys end of the paddock.

My two cents on the Moylan vs Tedesco thing for Origin 2.
Moylan was close to best on ground for the Blues in his debut. Why the heckity heck would anyone be talking about punting him?
Submitted by mark ashford on
OK Coach you win that round (broncs defeat) I should know better than to challenge you on statistical matters.
Also agree re Moylan he's fit fast and a game breaker.
Gotta forgive him a couple of small errors in his first ever origin.
Sharks/Cowboys a real arm wrestle as was expected.
Sharks play a rough and grubby game and I feel for any team that plays them. Graham has gotta go after that hit on JT.
Talking about integrity Coach if he's picked for SOO will he get off at the match review?

#Refs still getting it wrong. But it is what it is. Just crap.
Get these refs under the microscope after they finish with Manly.
#Sharks (see below) hit 10 in the winning streak score in just one streak, and only 1/2 way through the season. Here is their history of 10+ years. Finals footy is a guarantee and we can already see they have clearly not had a year like 2016 before.

#Roosters all but confirmed into the bottom 4 and their coach is offered a 2 year extension. Must be the best coach in the history of the game.
#Souths not far off bottom 4 on 8. What odds would you have got a few months back that Manly, Souths and Roosters would all finish bottom 4?
#My Panthers think they are close. They don't realise it will take another 5 wins in a row to be any chance.

Graham was not even put on report so hard to see him being charged now. For a long time the judiciary have tried hard not to pick up something the ref didn't.
Even if he was charged he would get off by simply saying "yes I'm guilty as charged". What a laughing stock of a system.
How someone else keeps getting picked in front of Cartwright I don't get. He's one of very few, who cause headaches for defences all game long.
My problem is not the Captain. It's the Coach/Selectors. They are the ones who have long needed replacing.

Well done Thinker on getting 7/8. When I mentioned Tedesco for SOO, I did not want Moylan dropped, can't we shift Moylan up to replace Walker, Tedesco at fullback??
Coach, can you please have a look back through the last 10 SOO series, how many games have us Blues won at Suncorp(Brisbane)??

Michael Morgan had a game to forget last night. He was involved in everything bad about the Cowboys and I'm sure he made more errors on his own than the rest of the team put together. The Sharks deserved their victory with some brutal defence that saw the Cowboys driven back in almost every tackle. Not sure the Sharks are premiership contenders but they may go pretty close....
