North Queensland Cowboys vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
Frustrating losses for both sides on the road last week. The Cowboys get to go home and lick their wounds but it's another unpleasant road trip for the tricolours. The heat hasn't abated in the tropics at this time of year, and it's that humidity that saps the energy out of visiting teams. The last time the Chooks lost the first two games of the season was quite some time ago - I'm pretty sure it pre-dates John Howard as Prime Minister, and there's every chance they'll be losing their first three. An injury-depleted Raiders outfit scored 21 points last round. I'd expect a full-strength Cowboys to at least match that...and that's enough.
Verdict – Cowboys by 4
Result - Cowboys 40 defeated Roosters 0
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – ANZ Stadium
Here's a game that should pull a few numbers through the turnstiles. Debutant Kerrod 'Eyes' Holland got the Bulldogs over the line after the siren last round, and his reward is a demotion to the NSW Cup. Don't worry Ms Thinker - I'm sure you'll get to see those eyes again. David Klemmer is facing the judiciary for inappropriate touching which sounds worse than it is. I don't expect him to play. And once again the hamstring of Keiran Foran hangs over his head - which is probably why he can't run. I'm all for stretching before a game but that seems unnatural. He won't run at all before kick-off and, quite frankly, that has me thinking he won't be playing either. With Foran unlikely and Peats unlucky I'm tipping the Dogs to start the season 3-0. Woof Woof Woof.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 4
Result - Eels 20 defeated Bulldogs 6
Newcastle Knights vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium
Last week I mentioned that the three coaches making their club debuts this season hadn't won a game yet, and I can say it again because it's still true. Trent Barrett is probably under more pressure than Knights coach Nathan Brown, but it's Brown with the highest mountain to climb. The Knights simply don't look like a first grade side at the moment. The Raiders did everything to win last week which is a refreshing change of attitude from the green machine. Traditionally I favour the Knights in these afternoon games in the Hunter, but traditionally the Knights are better than this.
Verdict – Raiders by 8
Result - Knights 24 drew with Raiders 24
Penrith Panthers vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Pepper Stadium
The Panthers have been playing well but they've little to show for it. Two narrow losses to teams that have beaten other teams is fair form in this competition. Sadly, it reminds me of the period when Anthony Griffin was coaching the Broncos - they were turning up and playing well, but found themselves just falling short when it mattered. Griffin gets an opportunity at revenge when he takes on the coach that replaced him in Brisbane, but he's not the kind of man that bears a grudge. When Wayne Bennett 'applied' for the Broncos job he claimed he knew what needed to be done to take them from being a competitive side to a premiership side. The old buggar was probably right. Expect Jamie Soward to test Englishman Greg Eden with his kicking game on Saturday night. A competitive affair, but the visitors will prevail.
Verdict – Broncos by 7
Result - Panthers 23 defeated Broncos 22
Gold Coast Titans vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium
I'm a little suprised that the Titans have their fair share of support to win this game. They did win at home in round one, but the form from that game (against the Knights) has to be questionable. The Tigers meanwhile are undefeated, and while this is their first away game for the year their record on the glitter strip is pretty good. A fair chunk of the Tigers starting side are up for contract renewals in the near term...and they're playing accordingly. James Tedesco has jumped out of the box this season and while he's running freely and playing with confidence he's a joy to behold. Don't be surprised if the Tigers get a fair chunk of the crowd support on Saturday night too. Sheesh! Now I've got four teams maintaining their undefeated status.
Verdict – Tigers by 4
Result - Titans 30 defeated Tigers 18
New Zealand Warriors vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium
For years the Warriors moved their first home game of the season to Eden Park and they would lose every single time. Finally they've nailed that coffin shut and returned to the ground that has been a graveyard for many a visiting side. If the Warriors like their coach at all they turn up and win this game. Perhaps they don't like him. If they do they'll be feeling the pressure, and I don't believe we get the best of the Warriors when they're under pressure. The Storm eat pressure for breakfast, and they dish it out for their opponents too. It's hard to replace Billy Slater, but Cameron Munster goes close. Note that half the Storm pack are Kiwis, so this will feel a little like a home(coming) game for a fair chunk of the purple machine. The Warriors haven't won a game since July and the Storm are undefeated in 2016, yet the Warriors are the bookies tip. What can they see that I can't see? Potential I suppose. I'll focus on the results.
Verdict – Storm by 1
Result - Storm 21 defeated Warriors 14
St George Illawarra Dragons vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Sunday afternoon – SCG
For more than a while I've been harping on about the Dragons and their limitations with the ball in hand. Their showing against the Sharks last week has done little to dispel my concerns. To make matters worse their opponent has racked up 90 points in two outings thus far. The only game this round where the winner virtually picks themselves. In any case, it's great to see two grand old clubs battling it out at a grand old venue on a Sunday afternoon. If you can be there....be there.
Verdict – Rabbitohs by 22
Result - Dragons 8 defeated Rabbitohs 6
Manly Sea Eagles vs Cronulla Sharks – Monday night – Brookvale Oval
Another false favourite on show here with the Sea Eagles favoured to beat the Sharks. Manly are missing Brett Stewart at the back, and they're really missing Keiran Foran in the halves. At some point the current halves pairing clicks or Jamie Lyon gets switched in for Dylan Walker. I suspect the latter, but it doesn't look like we'll see that on Monday. And what's not to like about the Sharks demolition job on the Dragons last week? I'll stick, and if its close I can bank on the goal-kicking of James Maloney to get the Sharks over the line.
Verdict – Sharks by 2
Result - Sea Eagles 22 defeated Sharks 12
Wally Lewis - round three selections (in bold)

Of course the thing that I find most funny about Thin Lizzy now is how instead of the name of famous classic Irish pub rock band, most people now know it as the name of popular make up product ! " Thin Lizzy, cleans and rejuvenates tired skin while helping you shine ! Just apply the dead. decomposing rock star evenly to the contours of your face ... " " I'm sorry, what ? " ;-D

Newbie is sooo sad … but sure to pick up once he’s taken a couple of Aropax. If that doesn’t work I suppose there’s always the leftover Zoloft he has somewhere in the cupboard. I seem to remember it’s in the plastic container with the Cipramil, Ciazil and Zactin.
OK, I gave my beautiful boys another chance and well, you saw what happened tonight. Damn! Ups and downs people, ups and downs. Our turn had to come I suppose. I’ll take it on the chin and keep the faith. Might not tip ‘em again until they start winning but I’ll keep the faith nevertheless. Well done to those Cowboys. Dagnabit! Peace …

Evening Thinker I was just wondering if you could do anything to possibly squeeze islander into the tipping comp at all by any chance & just let him accumulate points from round 3 on so he can at least join in but not be able to win prize money for not being in the comp from the start ??

Voyeur, my stirring the pot with others is all that that is. My comments don't exude hatred or intense dislike for another blogger - unless it's Origin and you are from the other State, and you wouldn't be a true footy fan if you weren't the same.
No Islander, I'm not the captain of the ship, but there surely is an unwritten rule about saying what you want to say about footy, as well as what you level you can go with the other people writing. Voyeur, your attack from 2015 springs to mind. I'm happy to have water pass under bridge, if a pact to say what you want about footy, give people a razz for tipping like a donkey, but leave opinions about the contributors to oneself.
... So back to footy, shame I've missed a lot of live stuff. Can see now why Souths smashed the Roosters, why a depleted Canberra were good enough to run down the Roosters, why Cowboys smashed the Roosters. What I can't understand are these wooden spoon odds with Roosters at the wrong end of the scale. Is this the first ever occasion where a team goes from 100/1 into favourite overnight?
Wests $3.50
Newcastle $5.50
Parramatta $10
St George $11
Canberra $13
Penrith $15
Cronulla $31
Manly $41
Melbourne $41
New Zealand $51
South Sydney $51
Canterbury $67
Brisbane $101.00
North Qld $101.00
Sydney $101.00

@newbie I feel your pain mate. The least we could have done is put a couple of points on the board.

They were muttering last night after the game that the year the Roosters started 0-3 that it was a very bad year for them. That and most punters (Punter excluded) like the next big move may have helped them bring them in.
But are we all forgetting last year, Manly got off to a shocker, and after they got their act together and a few players back they started to win again. I wouldn't condemn the minor premiers to the spoon just yet, but it doesn't look good.
There's a cricket reference for you Coach.

Yeah lets get Islander on competition ladder ! That and I wouldn't take too many of those pills Newbie because did you see that look on Issac Luke face last week against Broncos ? That's look of someone when drugs wear off and you find out you're playing for Warriors ... :-)

Afternoon Folks
I have to disagree about letting Islander enter the tipping comp, my apologies if that offends anyone but the comp has begun and the boss closed off the entrants with heaps of notice. Rocket and Eagle47, what do you think?
Islander, you will have to try again next week, I and all of the other footy mad people would like to see you post your tips in the comments section.
Hey "Coach", looks like another dismal weekend of tipping ahead for you, are you sure you don't want my help?
Come on the Bulldogs tonight.

Hi folks, the cowboys won last night at half throttle, you should be quite nervous "a" it makes them look bad last week when they were against better completion and couldn't lift, will watch them with interest in the coming weeks, they and Tigerholic seem at long odds to go back to back, hey Tigerholic I see you finally got on the tigers Hooray Hooray that could well be their undoing, I tossed up and wanted to take the titans, but I talked myself out of it, this is a danger game for you .
Coach Potato, Tiger has taken the whip to you for some reason, You have taken the Eels tonight and the Panthers Saturday, I almost hope they win just to see the spray you deliver our friend if they both get up, as for late starters the problem is Island boy is not on his pat Malone probably a lot of people missed out .the bus is full!
By the way Baggy don't get excited when I referred to the Eels as better completion last week, I have taken the dogs tonight there's another mauling coming your way.

On the Islander discussion. I didn't get my tips in, I got my ramblings down, but forgot the tip page. I'm not going to plead my case to the Boss and the Thinker. Some days you kick, some days you get kicked.

If they want the bunker to be a success, they need to be given the green light to strip the play down as they see fit. Forward pass, offside, grounding, shepherding, because as fans we want the right decision, not something that has questions around it. I.e. the bulldogs first try last week against the Panthers.

My thoughts on limiting the comp to 22.
In the year 2016, I truly don't get it. Its been a good Century or 20 since the abacus was the latest thing on the market. Why only 22? Why not 122? Why not 1022?
If tips are entered electronically, surely they can be tabulated electronically and so should be just as easy whether there was 22 players or 1022.
If there is some sort of manual process in all this, then a programmer fixes that in a couple of hours flat, no?
Sure, I'm happy to be in the top 22, but I do feel bad for others who want to be part of this page.
I know I'm being blunt, but l know that improvement never happens (in anything we do in life) until we question the current process.

About the Dogs no try, it put on show the flaws of the NRL video review for all to see.
The video ref cannot rule on a forward pass, but the pass was so far forward, they wanted desperately to rule it a no try.
Problem was Cecchin, obviously not watching the game too well including a 4m forward pass, indicated a try on the field. The Bunker needed some way not to give it. Somehow it was noticed the touchjudge had called a forward pass without Cecchin noticing.
But hang on, the Bunker is a video review. How then has audio part of the review? I have to ask, if the ref didn't know there was a forward pass call at the time, how did the Bunker get to know this? They only have vision available. The only possibility for me is that this info was only passed on 'after' it went up for review. Again, a big no no.
All in all as a rugby league purist it was a no try, but under the current rules, the Bunker should have had no choice but to give try. They clearly went outside their jurisdiction by including audio, and audio that was not heard before the Bunker was called on. Horrible night for the Bunker.
They must be thanking their lucky stars not a single NRL commentator brought up the Hopoate try debacle last week.

....and so surely this was a case of the on-field ref making a call of "Don't Know, Sorry"- and giving this signal with the arms

Bunker you got it wrong again with the Bulldogs try.
The dummy half takes a clear step and a half to the left of the player playing the ball, throws a dummy, then runs back behind to the right about 8 steps before passing.
2min 25s mark. Shepherd. No try.
You don't think so. Watch number 14 for Parra.
http://www.nrl.com/rd-3-bulldogs-v-eels-hls/tabid/10959/contentid/828652...
Who cares you say, Parra won anyway?
1/ Rules of the game apply for 80 minutes not 77.
2/ For and against will count for plenty come Round 26.
In the last two weeks the Dogs should be -2 points on the ladder and -12 for and against.

Video refs can not rule on a forward pass
Submitted by Coach Potato on
a, they pretended they were only going by the linesman's call. But where did they get this from? The ref never heard it, and the Bunker only gets vision.
Tony Archer's explanation after the game was complete gobbledy-gook.
Submitted by Steel Panther on
I understand that the video ref can't rule on a forward pass...never has been able to but if people want the right decision regardless of who can do what surely that's what they got last night? Chechin went upstairs with the wrong call and the Bunker came back with the right one.
And how about the cricket last night.....lol

To address the elephant in the room - I'm not excluding people just to be nasty. There are technical elements involved with the creating of a tipping ladder, and these things take time.
I pay my little helper with occasional good company and even less occasional bottles of scotch, but he's basically doing this for nothing (keeping the server ticking over that supports the site requires several bottles of fuel (scotch) every year alone.
At some point we had to draw a line to get things finished and working before season kick-off. That way my helper friend can get back to his real life and career - which is arguably almost as important as his role here :-)
The situation Islander is in is fairly unique. Just today my other workplace organised a pallet of goods which is on its way to one of the remote islands over there to help out. He's been a part of the site for a while, and if I can find a way to slot him into the tipping ladder proper I will do so. There is at least one other person I would like to include if I can.
If it were easy they would already be there, but I'll keep tally of those who continue to submit their tips in the comments section, and I'll keep you all updated with their progress throughout the season.

Witch person is that Thinker

On that try, I watched it at speed and was shattered by our flimsy defence in the last few minutes. But I did miss that obstruction, I concur no try. If it is still the nonsense of previous seasons in the Bunker then as Coach put it it has failed. The only way to bring creditability back to the men up stairs is allow them to rule on everything, and get rid of this rubbish notion that as long as the ball goes backwards out of the hand its not a forward pass. If you receive the pass ahead of the man throwing the ball then it is a forward pass no matter which way the ball leaves your hands.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Not sure about Elephant, was just a question. Thank you for the answer. I accept what you say is true, even though my simple mind doesn't fully grasp. I'm the little kid asking "but why?"
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Yes it was the common sense decision Panther, but it was done by moving goal posts mid-review.
Up until last year this kind of effort would have been awarded every time. What a horrible precedent was set last night. The Bunker, it seems, can use audio from a touchjudge with a different opinion, after the review has been called by the ref.
It's more than a bit disturbing that any decision could be reversed by differing audio from a touchjudge.
For the sake of the game, they should have blown the bloody try.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
For the sake of the Eels, I'm glad they didn't give the bulldogs any momentum until it didn't matter. They are a bad side to allow momentum to swing their way.
