North Queensland Cowboys vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
Frustrating losses for both sides on the road last week. The Cowboys get to go home and lick their wounds but it's another unpleasant road trip for the tricolours. The heat hasn't abated in the tropics at this time of year, and it's that humidity that saps the energy out of visiting teams. The last time the Chooks lost the first two games of the season was quite some time ago - I'm pretty sure it pre-dates John Howard as Prime Minister, and there's every chance they'll be losing their first three. An injury-depleted Raiders outfit scored 21 points last round. I'd expect a full-strength Cowboys to at least match that...and that's enough.
Verdict – Cowboys by 4
Result - Cowboys 40 defeated Roosters 0
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – ANZ Stadium
Here's a game that should pull a few numbers through the turnstiles. Debutant Kerrod 'Eyes' Holland got the Bulldogs over the line after the siren last round, and his reward is a demotion to the NSW Cup. Don't worry Ms Thinker - I'm sure you'll get to see those eyes again. David Klemmer is facing the judiciary for inappropriate touching which sounds worse than it is. I don't expect him to play. And once again the hamstring of Keiran Foran hangs over his head - which is probably why he can't run. I'm all for stretching before a game but that seems unnatural. He won't run at all before kick-off and, quite frankly, that has me thinking he won't be playing either. With Foran unlikely and Peats unlucky I'm tipping the Dogs to start the season 3-0. Woof Woof Woof.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 4
Result - Eels 20 defeated Bulldogs 6
Newcastle Knights vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium
Last week I mentioned that the three coaches making their club debuts this season hadn't won a game yet, and I can say it again because it's still true. Trent Barrett is probably under more pressure than Knights coach Nathan Brown, but it's Brown with the highest mountain to climb. The Knights simply don't look like a first grade side at the moment. The Raiders did everything to win last week which is a refreshing change of attitude from the green machine. Traditionally I favour the Knights in these afternoon games in the Hunter, but traditionally the Knights are better than this.
Verdict – Raiders by 8
Result - Knights 24 drew with Raiders 24
Penrith Panthers vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Pepper Stadium
The Panthers have been playing well but they've little to show for it. Two narrow losses to teams that have beaten other teams is fair form in this competition. Sadly, it reminds me of the period when Anthony Griffin was coaching the Broncos - they were turning up and playing well, but found themselves just falling short when it mattered. Griffin gets an opportunity at revenge when he takes on the coach that replaced him in Brisbane, but he's not the kind of man that bears a grudge. When Wayne Bennett 'applied' for the Broncos job he claimed he knew what needed to be done to take them from being a competitive side to a premiership side. The old buggar was probably right. Expect Jamie Soward to test Englishman Greg Eden with his kicking game on Saturday night. A competitive affair, but the visitors will prevail.
Verdict – Broncos by 7
Result - Panthers 23 defeated Broncos 22
Gold Coast Titans vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium
I'm a little suprised that the Titans have their fair share of support to win this game. They did win at home in round one, but the form from that game (against the Knights) has to be questionable. The Tigers meanwhile are undefeated, and while this is their first away game for the year their record on the glitter strip is pretty good. A fair chunk of the Tigers starting side are up for contract renewals in the near term...and they're playing accordingly. James Tedesco has jumped out of the box this season and while he's running freely and playing with confidence he's a joy to behold. Don't be surprised if the Tigers get a fair chunk of the crowd support on Saturday night too. Sheesh! Now I've got four teams maintaining their undefeated status.
Verdict – Tigers by 4
Result - Titans 30 defeated Tigers 18
New Zealand Warriors vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium
For years the Warriors moved their first home game of the season to Eden Park and they would lose every single time. Finally they've nailed that coffin shut and returned to the ground that has been a graveyard for many a visiting side. If the Warriors like their coach at all they turn up and win this game. Perhaps they don't like him. If they do they'll be feeling the pressure, and I don't believe we get the best of the Warriors when they're under pressure. The Storm eat pressure for breakfast, and they dish it out for their opponents too. It's hard to replace Billy Slater, but Cameron Munster goes close. Note that half the Storm pack are Kiwis, so this will feel a little like a home(coming) game for a fair chunk of the purple machine. The Warriors haven't won a game since July and the Storm are undefeated in 2016, yet the Warriors are the bookies tip. What can they see that I can't see? Potential I suppose. I'll focus on the results.
Verdict – Storm by 1
Result - Storm 21 defeated Warriors 14
St George Illawarra Dragons vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Sunday afternoon – SCG
For more than a while I've been harping on about the Dragons and their limitations with the ball in hand. Their showing against the Sharks last week has done little to dispel my concerns. To make matters worse their opponent has racked up 90 points in two outings thus far. The only game this round where the winner virtually picks themselves. In any case, it's great to see two grand old clubs battling it out at a grand old venue on a Sunday afternoon. If you can be there....be there.
Verdict – Rabbitohs by 22
Result - Dragons 8 defeated Rabbitohs 6
Manly Sea Eagles vs Cronulla Sharks – Monday night – Brookvale Oval
Another false favourite on show here with the Sea Eagles favoured to beat the Sharks. Manly are missing Brett Stewart at the back, and they're really missing Keiran Foran in the halves. At some point the current halves pairing clicks or Jamie Lyon gets switched in for Dylan Walker. I suspect the latter, but it doesn't look like we'll see that on Monday. And what's not to like about the Sharks demolition job on the Dragons last week? I'll stick, and if its close I can bank on the goal-kicking of James Maloney to get the Sharks over the line.
Verdict – Sharks by 2
Result - Sea Eagles 22 defeated Sharks 12
Wally Lewis - round three selections (in bold)

- COWBOYS vs Roosters
- BULLDOGS vs Eels
- Knights vs RAIDERS
- Panthers vs BRONCOS

We need to look at certain infallible truths, as much as we like to bash the Bronco's for being a Friday night team, they sell Suncorp out regularly during the season. 55,000 fans should have been at the first game of the season IN BRISBANE. As happy as I was that the first game to kick off the season was at Pirtek, it was the wrong day, and the wrong venue for the start of the season. Cowboys need to have their home games sometime of Sat/Sun to allow people to travel into Townsville, instead of just having the local faithful to enjoy the premiers at home, and the idea of Pepper, Pirtek, Kograh, being phased out for 3 or 4 main venues is the worst idea possible. Look at how well Campbell town sells out for the Dogs now they have gone home.
Anyway Christine, Sharks can swim and a Shark at a beach is enough to clear the water of everyone except them. Sharks to kick on and go 2-1 tonight.

Yes Baggy_Gee. Sure Cronulla Sharks are going to beat Manly Sea Eagles tonight's at Brookvale and maybe the alien space monsters will finally land tonight and teach us all that there is no such thing as death, in life you are born with the stars in your soul and universe is yours to do as you command and crap, Cronulla just scored ... :-(

Nice work there Johnny Ray
Metres gained for the game so far - Sharks 167, Sea Eagles 5

That's a pretty brutal start, 8 points in 8 minutes. Hope they have the long burn fuse and not a 1 half banger.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
But the tackle stats are where it's at. 85-29. A lond hard day at the beach for the Eagles tonight.

Christine, Thursday games are scheduled all the way through the season, there's only a week or two that there isnt. I just don't like it though. Footy is for the weekend. So what if there are games scheduled at the same time. Didnt anyone used to love hearing the score updates 'around the grounds'? Friday Saturday Sunday 2-3-3. Jam packed is so much better than one game here, one game there. Remember ANZAC day - 5 games straight. Did anyone argue with that? Bloody do it every week. Friday night game, 5 straight games on Saturday, 2 on Sunday. Sounds great to me. (I would say that though)
Tigerholic it's true NSW unites lots of sworn enemies. Probably why we lose so much. Can't get their heads around playing along side each other. Don't really blame them. Who wants Josh Reynolds and Michael Ennis as teammates?

Hey Tigerholic, it always amazes me how origin losers like you, Coach Potato and Gus Gould just throw of a decade of disaster like it never happened and talk up the cockroaches, what they are going to do, and how big and great this years team will be, if it wasn't for Dave Taylor the three of you would still be receiving counselling and wondering if you would ever win again.

Thanks coach my idiotic father said we only have four Thursday night games & I just took his word for it ,Tigerholic when I asked the ? about brookvale remember last year when brookie was all pot holes & in the wet it was just mud well I that what I was referring to .

Ah Coach your barbs are getting a bit old.
Your Panthers next meet the Broncs in round 20 at Suncorp.
I predict a 12 point win to the Queenslanders.
Why are you so vocal about the "bunker" using audio from a touchy to call a forward pass?
It seems to me that forward passes are the most annoying aspect of our game and if the "bunker" can help then surely it's a good thing.
Are we already talking about SOO?
NSW are trying to include Semi Radradra (is that how you spell it)
C'mon guys he's a Fijian and will play for his country.
If I get Sharkies tonight it will be 3/8 nothing to brag about.
Coach your Panthers take on a Dragons team this weekend that did well against the Rabbits in atrocious conditions.
What is your prediction?
AS far as my Broncs are concerned I predict a very narrow win over the Cowboys maybe a point or two.
Just because Voyeur didn't like the size of your ego doesn't make him/her a troll!
Your stats on the Broncs/Panthers were interesting but who was at the big dance?

Boy, lots of questions in that one. Ok one at a time.
#Beating one of the supremist teams in the NRL never gets old as does throwing the traditional victory barb. Don't like it? The adage ends something to the effect of please yourself !
#Bunker would be fine to rule using audio if they were legislated to. Problem is, they weren't and they aren't, and not on forward passes even 5m forward. They made up their own rules on the run. It's a horrible precedent been set. Ref rules try, goes up to the video, somehow the Bunker hears a call from the touchie that noone else did? It was a clear forward pass, but they aren't able to change the ref's call by themselves about this. Sounds all too much like the Joe the Cameraman conspiracy.
#Round 20 you might be right. Hope you're wrong.
#No I agree. Not right for Semi to play for NSW, but definitely worried about Te Maire Martin's school days in Qld.
#Next week @ WIN. Happy not to have played 80 minutes in driving rain. Surely that takes something out of the legs. Running around in clothes that weigh an extra kilogram. Surely that saps the energy. Panthers watching from the couch and enjoying an extra days rest. I think there's a chance of an upset. Just give it to Te Maire !!
#Good luck next week. You might need it.
#Theres a big difference between disagreeing with what someone says, and attacking someone's character. If you had thought it was all the same, well frankly that surprises me. Trust me. There is a big difference.
#You talking about that one point game again? Sucker for bloody punishment

Surely anyone who tipped just one correct winner this week is not entitled to take a shot at anyone, especially someone who will be in front of them on the tipping ladder. Maybe you need a hand with your tips instead of my old mate Coach Potato, I would recommend going the exact opposite to Newbie from Perth.
Like I told Coach, its a long way from the finish line and I can see you running out of puff Rocket.

Hey Coach
It would appear that you have ruffled Mark Ashfords feathers in a big way, what have you done to him?
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Wasn't me. Was Te Maire's fault.
Ok one more stat. 38 games ago since Broncos were held scoreless in the second 40. Against Manly Round 21, 2014. That's a fair while ago. Anyone think Panthers should get any credit for that. 17-0 from the 37 minute mark onwards is hardly a lucky win.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
If you took the opposite to me after 3 weeks you'd be on a pretty handy 14 1/2. Bugger it. That's it. Whatever I tip next week, I'm taking the opposite. I just need to work out which is the real tip, and which is the dummy, then swap. Easy.

Greetings football fans,
I'm about to update the tipping ladder now....shouldn't be long.
I've just updated the NRL ladder - only one Sydney team in the top six - and they're only doing well because their team is packed full of English forwards and that big Queenslander at the back.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
Dammit a hot start followed by a horrible back end of the weekend. 5/8 but glad to have it.
On the origin front, I agree with Coach and that QLD guy, no Sami, BUT........ we need to make this crap about declaring for a team a thing of the past and Iron clad 2 things, no NRL first grade till you over the age of 18, and your FIRST, first grade game is the deciding factor. Your first game is in Vic, to bad so sad, born in Fiji, ditto, want to play for an Island nation because you can't get a start in the Aus test team, no origin for you. Origin should play second fiddle to representing your country.

ARGH would have been top of the heap too. Damn these inefficient little hands.

Hello again
The tipping ladder has been updated now. Top scores this round went to Tailspin and Johnny Ray with an impressive 5 from 8. I'm pretty sure Tailspin was the only one to pick the Dragons this weekend. Tailspin warned us that a round of upsets was due and Tailspin was spot on. This happens every single season - backing outsiders in the first five rounds in the NRL is not a silly thing to do.
For those that are wondering, I haven't given anyone points for the drawn game. Some comps give you a point for a draw, some give you half a point and some give you none.
I'm one of the cruel heartless ones that gives you nothing.
Note how ridiculously close our tipping comp is - just two points separating first and seventeenth.
I'll have the round four page published late tomorrow. For those of you going away for Easter have a great break - and don't forget your tips before you go.
All the best

Hey Coach
What do you think of the tackle by Martin Taupau on Jack Bird, he has to go for at least a month. That would be the biggest problem with his aggressive tackling style.

I'm also on 14 points so i'm not doing any worse than anyone else .
