Round three selections

North Queensland Cowboys vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

Frustrating losses for both sides on the road last week. The Cowboys get to go home and lick their wounds but it's another unpleasant road trip for the tricolours. The heat hasn't abated in the tropics at this time of year, and it's that humidity that saps the energy out of visiting teams. The last time the Chooks lost the first two games of the season was quite some time ago - I'm pretty sure it pre-dates John Howard as Prime Minister, and there's every chance they'll be losing their first three. An injury-depleted Raiders outfit scored 21 points last round. I'd expect a full-strength Cowboys to at least match that...and that's enough.

Verdict – Cowboys by 4

Result - Cowboys 40 defeated Roosters 0

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

Here's a game that should pull a few numbers through the turnstiles. Debutant Kerrod 'Eyes' Holland got the Bulldogs over the line after the siren last round, and his reward is a demotion to the NSW Cup. Don't worry Ms Thinker - I'm sure you'll get to see those eyes again. David Klemmer is facing the judiciary for inappropriate touching which sounds worse than it is. I don't expect him to play. And once again the hamstring of Keiran Foran hangs over his head - which is probably why he can't run. I'm all for stretching before a game but that seems unnatural. He won't run at all before kick-off and, quite frankly, that has me thinking he won't be playing either. With Foran unlikely and Peats unlucky I'm tipping the Dogs to start the season 3-0. Woof Woof Woof.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result - Eels 20 defeated Bulldogs 6

Newcastle Knights vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

Last week I mentioned that the three coaches making their club debuts this season hadn't won a game yet, and I can say it again because it's still true. Trent Barrett is probably under more pressure than Knights coach Nathan Brown, but it's Brown with the highest mountain to climb. The Knights simply don't look like a first grade side at the moment. The Raiders did everything to win last week which is a refreshing change of attitude from the green machine. Traditionally I favour the Knights in these afternoon games in the Hunter, but traditionally the Knights are better than this.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result - Knights 24 drew with Raiders 24

Penrith Panthers vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Pepper Stadium

The Panthers have been playing well but they've little to show for it. Two narrow losses to teams that have beaten other teams is fair form in this competition. Sadly, it reminds me of the period when Anthony Griffin was coaching the Broncos - they were turning up and playing well, but found themselves just falling short when it mattered. Griffin gets an opportunity at revenge when he takes on the coach that replaced him in Brisbane, but he's not the kind of man that bears a grudge. When Wayne Bennett 'applied' for the Broncos job he claimed he knew what needed to be done to take them from being a competitive side to a premiership side. The old buggar was probably right. Expect Jamie Soward to test Englishman Greg Eden with his kicking game on Saturday night. A competitive affair, but the visitors will prevail.

Verdict – Broncos by 7

Result - Panthers 23 defeated Broncos 22

Gold Coast Titans vs Wests Tigers – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

I'm a little suprised that the Titans have their fair share of support to win this game. They did win at home in round one, but the form from that game (against the Knights) has to be questionable. The Tigers meanwhile are undefeated, and while this is their first away game for the year their record on the glitter strip is pretty good. A fair chunk of the Tigers starting side are up for contract renewals in the near term...and they're playing accordingly. James Tedesco has jumped out of the box this season and while he's running freely and playing with confidence he's a joy to behold. Don't be surprised if the Tigers get a fair chunk of the crowd support on Saturday night too. Sheesh! Now I've got four teams maintaining their undefeated status.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result - Titans 30 defeated Tigers 18

New Zealand Warriors vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

For years the Warriors moved their first home game of the season to Eden Park and they would lose every single time. Finally they've nailed that coffin shut and returned to the ground that has been a graveyard for many a visiting side. If the Warriors like their coach at all they turn up and win this game. Perhaps they don't like him. If they do they'll be feeling the pressure, and I don't believe we get the best of the Warriors when they're under pressure. The Storm eat pressure for breakfast, and they dish it out for their opponents too. It's hard to replace Billy Slater, but Cameron Munster goes close. Note that half the Storm pack are Kiwis, so this will feel a little like a home(coming) game for a fair chunk of the purple machine. The Warriors haven't won a game since July and the Storm are undefeated in 2016, yet the Warriors are the bookies tip. What can they see that I can't see? Potential I suppose. I'll focus on the results.

Verdict – Storm by 1

Result - Storm 21 defeated Warriors 14

St George Illawarra Dragons vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Sunday afternoon – SCG

For more than a while I've been harping on about the Dragons and their limitations with the ball in hand. Their showing against the Sharks last week has done little to dispel my concerns. To make matters worse their opponent has racked up 90 points in two outings thus far. The only game this round where the winner virtually picks themselves. In any case, it's great to see two grand old clubs battling it out at a grand old venue on a Sunday afternoon. If you can be there....be there.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 22

Result - Dragons 8 defeated Rabbitohs 6

Manly Sea Eagles vs Cronulla Sharks – Monday night – Brookvale Oval

Another false favourite on show here with the Sea Eagles favoured to beat the Sharks. Manly are missing Brett Stewart at the back, and they're really missing Keiran Foran in the halves. At some point the current halves pairing clicks or Jamie Lyon gets switched in for Dylan Walker. I suspect the latter, but it doesn't look like we'll see that on Monday. And what's not to like about the Sharks demolition job on the Dragons last week? I'll stick, and if its close I can bank on the goal-kicking of James Maloney to get the Sharks over the line.

Verdict – Sharks by 2

Result - Sea Eagles 22 defeated Sharks 12

Wally Lewis - round three selections (in bold)

Johnny Ray's picture

Yeah Thinker. Thanks again for your response ;-D

TO THE VOYEUR
Hey mate don't let Coach intimidate you or get under your skin. He has no more authority than any of us and as far as I'm concerned (and I'm sure most others) you are welcome on this site. Correct Thinker?
Coach is a passionate Penrith & Blues supporter and his views are welcome here.
Last year he did a series on "winning and losing" streaks that ended up spot on with the Cows and Broncs facing off in the big one.
He has a very good league mind and a bit of an ego to match so why not just read his comments, enjoy them (or not) and most of all love this great game.
Jeez we're on 2.2 rounds in and the fur is flying.
COACH you have no authority to ban anyone so just back off.
This is a site for fun and tipping...nothing else.
NEWBIE congrats on giving up the gaspers. No doubt you'll get to Thailand quicker and live longer when you get there.
Sadly I'm still puffing away but only when I have a drink.
I too have been at it for over 40 years (when will we learn?)
I picked the dogs but would like to offer congrats to all Parra fans and others that picked them. They were awesome.
"A" your Cowboys were unstoppable, great game.
NEWBIE the Roosters have lost so many stars why on earth did they let Jennings go? Swapped him for X Broncs Copley hardly any comparison. (and I'm a Broncos fan)
Good luck to all for the rest of the round.

Fired up before the game I see Mark.

What I was referring to was the same guy that tore into me last year just because he didn't like what I said. All he had to do was disagree and have his own opinion instead of going on like that. Lots of people came to my defence and told Voyeux back then to pull his head in.

Otherwise, when I say that when comments start drifting into the gutter from a troll as he was then, that I would call for a ban is just that. I would ask the question to Thinker of his opinion to decide. I would call for the ban. Not myself doing anything. You obviously misread.

a's picture

Yes I agree trolling is uncessary but we all need to play nice like everyone can share their opion toy will Se the comment has gone to the dogs before you just have to be careful

My multi died with raiders , Mark ashford may I say to you it is mind over matter when it comes to giving up smoking I quit in 2008 after 19 -20 years of my life & I have never craved it nor have I missed it but they say unless you have a reason to do it you won't in my case my brother in law got 1 lesion & I said if it comes back he has cancer I will quit which it did & 8 months & 13 days later he passed away , it's not worth it but it's up to you mark what you do .

a's picture

Smoking is bad for you

Baggy_Gee's picture

Yes on a perfect round depending on how the draw effects us tipping. oh the irony.

Coach Potato's picture

Haven't heard from any of the losing brigade.
Panthers rip your friggin tongues out?

Ahhh still nothing like the age old favourite is there ... Suck Shit Broonncccoooooos !!!!

If you remember I wrote in the predictions page before round 1, I told about Te Maire Martin. (Aka "Te Maire Who"). Tonight they unveiled him. Not against any old chumps. Against the Broncos. He passed the test. He'll pass a few more tests being only 18.

Hey Tigerholic, Tigers didn't want this kid. Shows how much they know. Panthers did. Wasn't rocket science. I'm sure he has a home here for a few years to come.

In case you feel like you need one more look at Te Maire Martin before you buy him into your SuperCoach team, here it is again -

Crap. Titans beating Tigers. There's goes my Multi ... :-(

Coach Potato's picture

Tigerholic, got any advice for next week's tips mate?
Take the opposite you say?
Great. Thanks mate. Your a legend.

Baggy_Gee's picture

How many took the Panthers? and there goes my perfect round, Tigers getting done like a dinner.

Johnny Ray's picture

I took the Panthers. Never would of picked Titans to win this not with way they played last week. Dude ! Still say Storm will win ... :-(

Coach Potato's picture

Not that I smoke, but wishing I did right now. Would love to be in Caxton St blowin a few smoke rings from a big Havana cigar.

Baggy_Gee's picture

And that is how the west won. Eels, Panthers 2/2 for a great weekend.

Coach Potato's picture

Saying nothing when you lose - the truest show of weakness.

Coach Potato's picture

Hi Mark

I know you love the stats. Keep them coming you say. Not a problem.

Ok stats are updated:

Stat 1: Last 4 games @ Penrith v Broncos W.W.W.W to the Panthers

Stat 2: Last 6 games v Broncos - Panthers 4, Broncos 2 (home team wins all 6)

Stat 3: Last 20 games v Broncos - Panthers 10, Broncos 9, 1 draw

Yours respectfully
Coach Potato

Coach Potato's picture

Hi Christine, just to check if your multi was all head to head bets (no start taken into account)? If so, your bet is still good. A draw would give you a payout at half of the price you got for that game.

Johnny Ray's picture

She took Broncos Coach. Come on NZ Warriors please win ... :-)

tigerholic's picture

Hey Coach

All of your comments directed at me are more than warranted. Don't get too cocky though, us Tigers supporters know how to dig deep and be patient(very patient).

Enjoy the rest of your gloating weekend.

Coach Potato's picture

Appreciate your attitude Tiger. Winners should be able to gloat. Losers should be able to cop a razz for getting it wrong. I know I'll get paid back many times over. It's all part of the fun.

Coach Potato's picture

Yes Ben Hunt should have taken the damn suspension and got some more catching practice.

Old wounds must be gaping open know. Dropped ball. End of next set, field goal that wins the game for the opposition. Poor little sucker.

a's picture

Yes winning means you should have bagging rights. Losers should just cop with it

christine's picture

It could get worse for me yet I took souths , storm , & sharks , but last week got 7 / 8 ....

Coach Potato's picture

Million-Dollar-Benny, you must be so happy it didn't go to extra time, even though the last 5 minutes of the game were played as if it was extra time anyway. Maybe cut the game off at the 75m mark then hey Million-Dollar-Benny? Would that be ok? Oh no wait, then if they do that the 70-75 minute mark will be played like it was extra time anyway right Million-Dollar-Benny? Maybe no more field goals then Million-Dollar-Benny? You wouldn't have to lose by 1 point, and then have to dribble through another press conference telling all how unfair it is on your players. Yes, Million-Dollar-Benny, put it forward. Would be such great comedy.

Coach Potato's picture

Corey Parker, you repeated about four times through the press conference that you take full responsibility for the way the team performed. Does that mean you are putting your hand up to be dropped next week? Or is this the psychology used so you won't be?

Wayne Bennett, one of the questions to you was 'How do you think Te Maire Martin went in his first NRL game?' Your first answer was 'Who?'. The question was repeated. Your answer was 'Don't know. I wasn't watching him'. Maybe keep an eye out next time.

It's disrespect like this for the Panthers and their players that lost you the game. No Merrin, no Moylan, no Segeyaro, no Whare. Can't lose you thought.

Coach Potato's picture

I very much don't follow Souths or Dragons, but I love the SCG, and I will watch today as a proud Rugby League fan and remember all the greats that have made history on this ground, right up to the 87 Manly-Canberra Grand Final when they decided a new stadium was better.

Souths and Dragons have long proud histories, but would be nice to share the SCG around. Wests and Roosters get to play here too, but 12 other teams (and their fans) would also like to share in the SCG spirit. It's sad to see year in year out that the BigWigs only think 4 teams deserve to play run out on the hallowed turf.

christine's picture

Your team ladder is wrong raiders are currently on 5 points leading the comp until souths , storm , sharks , play this week .

The Voyeur's picture

Hey Coach, nice pick with the Panthers, actually my team for many years since 86, but I have to say I had lost the faith over the past few seasons, but looking like a good crop of juniors coming through, so fingers crossed for the coming seasons..........just need some luck with injuries !!!!

see I can play nice........hahaha

newbie from perth's picture

Whaaa? All Newbie needs now is for Manly to win Monday and he has basically tipped NO WINNERS this round. More than happy to take a point for the draw but can't remember the Boss' rules regarding draws.

Maybe I should go back to "doing the opposite" ala George Costanza. I seem to remember putting that idea forward last year or the year before that. Can't do any worse than I'm doing at the mo. Sheesh!

christine's picture

Newbie i'm on 2 from 7 which for me is shocking so if sharks win i'll be 3 from 8 so one of us is going to be right but now that í've said that it will probably be a draw ,That's my luck at the moment I really don't know who I annoyed up stairs but they're not happy with me by the looks of things .

mark ashford's picture

Oh Coach how smug and predictable are you.
Your Panthers won by 1 point don't get too comfortable my friend there are 23 rounds to go.
Where did the pennies finish last year?
I don't remember them being in any important finals.
Broncos and Cowboys will be there again.
I've tried to be nice but you are never nice.
So it's WAR WAR Coach and may the best warrior win!
I think I have 1 out of 7 so far so it may well be you Coach.

Coach Potato's picture

Talking through the pain barrier hey Mark. I admire you for that.
Only one point huh? I hear Grand Finals can be won with just one extra point ( giggle giggle ). Should be an interesting rematch next week. Bad timing for Hunt though. He's got a few more days to learn how to catch.

Voyeux you are unrecognisable. Has someone hacked your computer? 86? Should have held on a few more years. '91 (Panthers 25th season) Grand Final win had a feel not unlike Cowboys 2015 (their 21st season). Both been to the dance once before and lost. Wasn't going to happen again.

Need to know who your team is though. It's important for anyone chatting to fess up to the team they support. Mandatory I reckon if you want to dish out stuff to others when their team goes down. Eg.The suck eggs line probably should only get used if my team beats your team and vice versa. If not someone could have eggs thrown at them every time their team loses which is a bit weak. NRL tribalism is based on the theory that my team is better than yours. So who's your team? You can't beat tribal drums with someone if you don't know who they support.

Admittedly I did as poorly as most others this week, but I also didn't need anyone's help, and I'm actually not that unhappy. 2.5 out of 7 ain't nothing to spruik about but I think it's great that it happened. Its put everyone one notice. Plants the old seed of doubt for weeks and weeks to come. It means you will start seeing people tip different teams a lot more now. Not the old 90% of tips the same, 10% different.

Johnny Ray's picture

4 out of 7 for me this round so far, 5 you count Raiders drawing with Knights. That and dude I can't believe I'm saying this but go Manly Sea Eagles ! ;-D

Coach Potato's picture

Would be interested to see if Thinker chooses to show the video of a rookie scoring the winning point again at Penrith Park next week.

Not sure though. I think Thinker hurts as much when his hometown team loses, as when his Roosters go down.

If this week's video was meant to sting - not sure why else it gets shown, then next week's proposed video is pure Karma. Love Karma.

christine's picture

Coach just so you know i'm not a souths member this season infact i'm not a member of any club this season .

Coach Potato's picture

And you go for Warriors now wasn't it?

christine's picture

Coach i'm not a member of any club this season so you won't get a bite from me nice try but it won't work ....

a's picture

I have only 2 so far if you count the draw that is

Baggy_Gee's picture

Batting 5/7 with one to go. I might have a great round which won't count. But how good is it to be a Dragon, might have been scrappy, but when you beat a team who have racked up 90 points in the first 2 rounds then your entitled to bask in the glow.

Coach Potato's picture

Really? You didnt get a start in the comp? You contribute several times a week. I just counted half a dozen new and old who treat this as a totally non-interactive tipping comp, plus there's a few who's comments are as common as blue moons (an average 1 - 2 a year). I thought Thinker said he was reserving somne places for the regulars. If the ones I mentioned opened their mouths I wouldn't have a problem, but not giving a shit to type one word, and happy to take the place of someone who does. Good on you though, if I was told sorry and others yes, I wouldn't feel like typing too much.

a's picture

What do you think of GI attempting a field goal when his team is behind by 2 with 2 secs on the clock

Baggy_Gee's picture

No I'm in Coach, just stuffed up and didn't lodge my tips. Devastated, but life is just, just have to have fewer windows open when I put my thoughts down, and pay attention to what I am doing.

Coach Potato's picture

I know the windows to put tips on are only small each week. Thinker has helped by opening up tips sometimes on the Tuesday for anyone who is ready to pick.

What combination of fruit loops instigated this Thursday crap anyway? I thought it was the proposal to end Monday nights? Obviously not. It does nothing for the game, not to mention player recovery and more short turnarounds. Players union needs to take the NRL to task over player safety - or threaten a walk out.

christine's picture

why do we only get Thursday night games for the first four rounds & I also thought the same as you coach that the nrl was doing away with Monday night games , can anyone give an update on the state of brookie with the rain we've been having ?? I need sharks to win .

tigerholic's picture

Evening Folks
I agree that Thursday night games make tipping difficult let alone what it means to the players. I love Monday night footy and would rather see Thursday night games removed.

Coach, at least you and I will always agree when Origin comes around, I am a mad NSW supporter and even though I live in QLD, I really despise Queenslanders at Origin time.

I think the tide has turned in favour of NSW, I can see a 3-0 white wash to the Mighty Blues, what do you reckon?

a's picture

No QLD will win 3-0
