Round twenty five selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs North Queensland Cowboys – Thursday night – Belmore Sports Ground

How much difference does a venue make? Just five weeks ago the Cowboys held the Dogs scoreless while picking up 36 points of their own. That Bulldogs team and this Bulldogs team are virtually identical (minus Kasiano), and there's no indication that the Bulldogs form is improving. The big difference is the venue - the Bulldogs spritual home. Oddly enough, Belmore is a venue where Bulldogs coach Des Hasler lost every single game he played. He'll fare better as a coach at this ground, but a win on Thursday night looks unlikely. A Cowboys victory and they move into the top four, and if they retain that it looks like they'll be heading to Melbourne for the first week of the finals. Worst reward ever.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result - Cowboys 24 defeated Bulldogs 16

Melbourne Storm vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – AAMI Park

The Storm get two chances to wrap up the minor premiership this season. A win here and the J.J Giltinan Shield is theirs. A loss and they take on the only team that can take that trophy away from them next week. That's a nice little buffer to have, but I'm sure they'd prefer to wrap it up this Friday night. Like the Thursday night game we have one team hoping for a dramatic turnaround on the result the last time these sides met. The difference here is that the Storm are back at home, after tearing the Broncos apart in Brisbane in round 17. Not a lot went right for the Broncos that night, and the Storm were at their brutal best in what I think was the most dominant performance of the season so far. It's unlikely they'll be that good again, but they don't have to be. The Broncos have clearly improved since then...a lot. A win in Melbourne and they move ahead of the team that loses on Thursday on the ladder. That goes a long way toward ensuring a home final, and everyone wants a home final. Statistically, the Broncos beat the Storm in Melbourne more often than they beat them in Brisbane, but 2 wins from 6 isn't something to cheer about. It just so happens that the Storm have a better win rate at Suncorp than they do at AAMI Park. It's a curious one...but it's true. In a round full of great games this is one of them. The Broncos to shake the life out of this contest...and just fall short. If it comes down to field goals the composure of Cronk and Smith will get them over the line.

Verdict – Storm by 1

Result - Broncos 26 defeated Storm 16

Manly Sea Eagles vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Brookvale Oval

The last game of the year at Brookvale and the faithful can pay their respects to Jamie Lyon who has played his last game for the club. He may not be the only one, with doubts over Brett Stewart and Steve Matai returning to the NRL next season. All three deserve a send-off and what's left of the Manly side will give their all but they just don't have the cattle. A win for the Green Machine and they, at least temporarily, move into the top two. They also welcome back Hodgson, Lee, Vaughan and Fensom this week. The Raiders are the feel good story of 2016. Just too good.

Verdict – Raiders by 10

Result - Raiders 44 defeated Sea Eagles 30

Gold Coast Titans vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

Here's a game of football. 7th plays 8th and the winner is absolutely guaranteed a top eight finish. Both sides bring handy form into this clash - the Titans have lost just once since 17 and the Panthers just once since round 18. Oddly enough, that one loss for each side was against the Warriors. These sides faced off in round 11 in Penrith and the Titans prevailed 28 points to 24. Since then the Titans have added Nathan Peats, Konrad Hurrell and Jarryd Hayne to their roster, while the Panthers have unearthed Nathan Cleary. The Panthers record against top eight teams this season has been poor, but they are peaking at the right time. I lean their way on the basis that their recent form looks stronger. They ploughed through the Tigers last week, while the Titans beat them by a solitary point. They took the Warriors to golden point in New Zealand, while the Titans lost to the Warriors on the Gold Coast. The Panthers beat the Chooks convincingly, and that's the only game the Roosters have lost in four rounds. It's the game of the round. Panthers.

Verdict – Panthers by 4

Result - Panthers 15 defeated Titans 14

Cronulla Sharks vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

If the season was four weeks old the Sharks would be on one point and the Roosters would be on six (including convincing wins over both grand finalists from last year). Sadly for the Chooks the season has been longer than that...much longer. The current vein of form just shows what the Red White and Bluesters could have done this season, but didn't. As for the Sharks, well you could almost feel sorry for them. Almost. It looks like the pressure of expectation is weighing them down like the Australian swim team. Despite that, I'm actually going to tip them here. They are hanging onto their top two spot by a thread, and if they want to keep it they really need to win this game given the challenge that awaits them in round 26 in Melbourne. It's the last game of the season at Shark Park and those rabid fans in the Shire can push their boys over the line.

Verdict – Sharks by 2

Result - Sharks 37 defeated Roosters 12

New Zealand Warriors vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

With 7th playing 8th earlier in the round this is a live game - the winner has (some) hope of making the eight, while the loser can officially schedule their end of season silliness. These sides did play earlier this year but it was a while ago, with the Tigers prevailing 34-26 at Campbelltown. This time the Warriors are without Tuivasa-Sheck and Issac Luke while the Tigers are without Tedesco. I'm leaning to the home side but not with the confidence of some. If the Tigers haven't given up this could be one of the games of the round. Sadly, that loss last week looked a little bit like giving up. Who knows what sort of weather they're facing in Auckland but if conditions are fair this should be very entertaining indeed.

Verdict – Warriors by 4

Result - Tigers 36 defeated Warriors 24

Newcastle Knights vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

Those wascally wabbits. This is the Old Boys game for the Knights and I had them pegged as winning this. I didn't expect the Rabbitohs to start trying (and winning). I'm still bl00dy tempted I tells ya, but I can't quite do it. It wouldn't be fair to the two people who don't bother to read my ramblings here and just go straight to my tip and follow it without thinking for themselves. I will say this though - I'm going to have a bet. I'm backing the Knights with 14.5 points head start at $1.77. There...I said it. Gamble responsibly.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4

Result - Rabbitohs 34 defeated Knights 12

Parramatta Eels vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Monday night – Pirtek Stadium

Not a lot to motivate either side but I have to find a winner and this is how I'm doing it. This is the Eels last game at home this season and quite frankly they should go out and win for those fans loyal enough to get out there on a Monday night for a fundamentally meaningless fixture. The Dragons can do the same next week against the Knights. To those of you that get to the game...I salute you. To the Dragons fans that get to the game...I'll buy you a drink.

Verdict – Eels by 14

Result - Eels 30 defeated Dragons 18

Wally Lewis - round twenty-five selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • Bulldogs vs COWBOYS
  • STORM vs Broncos
  • Sea Eagles vs RAIDERS
  • TITANS vs Panthers
  • SHARKS vs Roosters
  • WARRIORS vs Tigers

The Broncos to upset the storm. Heard it here first

mark ashford's picture

Tips are in. Fingers are crossed.

Coach Potato's picture

Broncos beating Storm is an upset? Surely not.

Everyone knows 48 to 6 at Suncorp was just an off night.

mark ashford's picture

Read it again Coach says "Broncos to upset the Storm" Not Broncos to beat the Storm in an upset.
Subtle difference my friend.
Just worry about your Panthers against a Hayne inspired Titans.

Coach Potato's picture

Oh? Broncos to make Storm cranky.
Cronk or Smith must be about to get a boot in the head.

Coach Potato's picture

All teams should unite in belting the Titans out of the finals.
Fielding an illegal player is not on.
The NRL that owns a team and makes up rules on the run about player registration.

It's up to you Panthers and then Cowboys.
Give them the harshest penalty.
Punish them on the field.

http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/nrl/teams/titans/nrl-refuse-to-close...

Thinker and others , got anything to come to the defence of the NRL?

Coach Potato's picture

Sorry about the stupid subscriber only article if it doesn't open for you. Basically reads that players need to be registered by June 30, and Hayne wasn't. So what the hell is he doing playing. The NRL aren't answering.

fortresseagle's picture

Good day folks.

This is my special tribute to a legend , the man affectionately known as killer sadly will not lace up his boots for his fortress brooky farewell. The boys will be going all out to send him out a winner regardless. a country boy at heart laid back with a brilliant tactical mind the lion king read the game like a book great hands ,deceptively fast , a killer step and always. was a step ahead of the play, I have met killer many times a champion bloke on and off the field always has time for a chat and a beer. I'm so distraught that he won't be playing but he will be there to watch on as his team mates give him a grand send off . The boy from wee waa is a manly legend a rugby league legend to you killer brother wishing you all the best for your life after footy and know that you will always come back to the ground that you graced and became a legend in my mind the greatest centre of the modern era .

Had a great round last round with 6/8 here's hoping for a clean sweep .

The might sea eagles

The warriors

The panthers

The broncos

The cowboys

The sharks

The eels

The rabbitts

So the tribute week continues big Pete and eagle rocks and all the mighty eagles supporters join me in tributes to the great man himself the killer the Lyon king Jamie Lyon.

Fortress eagle home of the killer the one and only Jamie Lyon !!!!!!

fortresseagle's picture

Totally agree coach he shouldn't be playing, my feeling is that he went to the titans knowing the eels weren't going to make the finals , the titans were better situated . Yes I know it was also for the big bickies as well , you see the nrl has lost the plot sub standard refs, out of touch media and administrators and garbage trash commentators someone has to step in and save our great game. If not than us the fans will have to do something about it , I like jarryd hayne great talent but it does t excuse the fact that rules have been broken and for that the nrl has a lot to answer to simply put rubbish.

The fortress saying it as it is !!!!!! !!!!!

tigerholic's picture

Well said Fortress, I must say that I did not have much time for Jamie Lyon even though he was a NSW player, regardless of my own dislike for him he was a great player.

The Manly side has introduced new blood as the new lifeline for the club in Jake and Tom, they will bounce back next year.

Have a good weekend

tigerholic's picture

Giddy Coach

I still can't believe Hayne was allowed to play and be signed by another NRL club this year. It is total bullshit and the NRL won't or can't or are not saying anything, what is the go Thinker?

fortresseagle's picture

Thanks tiger ,

That's your opionion quite frankly I don't know what there was not to line about Jamie Lyon no footy player is perfect , he didn't love himself like some never off feild problems with the law laid back and a great competitor everyone has an opionion and your welcome to yours buddy ,

And yes the futures looks great for the club.

Happy fishing I think your mob will put up a great fight but I feel they have lost a bit of sting still been a spirited season for the tigers.

Off to work to ear.n the bucks have a good one everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a's picture

I would like to see all 3 QLD teams in the finals

The Thinker's picture

I believe the Hayne signing got clearance via a loophole. A very convenient loophole.

I read somewhere (don't quote me) that the Hayne cam in his return to the NRL rated higher than the Swans game. Yep....just the Hayne cam.

A very valuable loophole too.

christine's picture

My tips for rd 25
cowboys
storm
raiders
titans
sharks
warriors
souths
eels
may the nrl gods be good to us all .

mark ashford's picture

Coach I'm not defending the NRL but I think I read or heard somewhere that the June 30 rule only applies to players currently registered with an NRL club. As Hayne wasn't the rule doesn't apply.
Anyone know if this is correct?

The Thinker's picture

Mark,
That is the correct loophole.

a's picture

Here are my tips

Cowboys by 6 I think Cowboys are going to make the top 4 here

Storm by 8 I think it will be closer than the 42 point victory but they will win

Raiders by 12 I think Raiders are going to finish in 2nd here

Titans by 2 I think Titans are going to secure a finals birth here

Sharks by 1 A tough one here Sharks to get over the line only just

Warriors by 10 Warriors to keep their season alive here

Rabbitohs by 14 I think Rabbitohs to win 3 in a row here

Eels by 4 I think Eels are going to win here

And coach for the couch competition with those 3 whole games I tipped Warriors Rabbitohs and Eels please put me down for Rabbitohs

mark ashford's picture

Coach Titans at CBUS hard to beat. Hayne at fullback will test you.
Think you should take your focus away from the Broncos (wtf) and pray your team wins.

mark ashford's picture

Coach. For the couch comp I'll take the Rabbits (if I haven't taken them before) let me know.

Tim Clark's picture

Well done the THINKER picked the round again 3rd time this season

Coach Potato's picture

Surely the Titans have more Panther players to worry about than vice versa.

He's not even assured of playing following his concussion. I hope he does play, because if he does, it smacks of desparation, and that's a great compliment to the Panthers who will play anyone, anytime, anywhere.

Coach Potato's picture

I hope that anyone with half a brain cell realises that the Hayne exemption has brought to light that there is no such thing as a June 30 deadline.

Either you are a current player contracted so there's no date to worry about , or you are not a currently contracted player and so there's no date to worry about.

If only NRL matters were criminal offences. I'd be calling for the Feds.

mark ashford's picture

Earlier Coach said" all teams should unite to "knock the Titans out"
It's only you or the Cows that can do it.
About Jarred Hayne......
Coach he got a little knock to the head from a hip contact.
He'll be there at fullback weaving his magic.
You sound a little worried. Plenty of good players in the in the Titans squad as well.
Probably the game of the round to decide the 8.
Better hope your Pennies travel ok.

mark ashford's picture

Coach your 6.19 comment seems to me to indicate your half a brain cell has exploded into fragments never to be united.
If you are a current player under the NRL then there is a date 30th June.
If your not contracted to the NRL then there is no date.
Call the Feds Coach and the guys that come with straight jackets.

Coach Potato's picture

Mark, if a current player fails to gain a new contract by June 30, there's always 1st of July onwards because at that point you are not a current player.

Talk about education standards and Gonski in the same bloody sentence.

Coach Potato's picture

Fan integrity at its worst if Qlders are shuttin their traps because they feel they need all three teams in the finals to be any chance.

mark ashford's picture

Coach can't seem to understand that you don't understand that Hayne wasn't a contracted player. He was not a "current player"
Current players, if their contracts expire on 30th June of course are free to talk to other clubs.
I think Gonski refers to your, now gone, half a brain cell.

mark ashford's picture

Coach we now have 5 teams outside of Syderny in the top 8 with another QLD team snapping at their heals.
Better hope your Panthers win or it could get real embarrassing.

The Thinker's picture

"Mark, if a current player fails to gain a new contract by June 30, there's always 1st of July onwards because at that point you are not a current player."

Coach,
That's not the case. Players are on contracts for a season - there wouldn't be a player in the NRL that has a contract that ends on June 30.

Coach Potato's picture

Means a current player could effectively quit his job / leave the team he plays for mid-August and resign with another in time for finals. That doesn't sound in the spirit of things if the best players with a penchant for a premiership can just jump to a finals bound team on a back-ended contract ala Gasnier.

Coach Potato's picture

Just remember Hayne chose to play for Gold Medal favourites Fiji through some family ties, disregarding the fact he is himself Australian. The man has as much respect for himself and his back pocket as that other Aussie-Fijian we have all come to learn so much about recently.

St.George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Cowboys by 16- No Kasiano for Bulldogs and Scott back for the Cowboys. The Cowboys to get a big win over the Bulldogs to ruin their return to Belmore.

Storm by 2- The Storm to win in a close one to secure the minor premiership.

Raiders by 14- Raiders to continue their winning streak here against the Sea Eagles.

Titans by 2- This is the game of the round or at least one of the games of the round, with the winner 100% guaranteed a finals spot. The Titans to just win in an absolute belter here. It's interesting to see how Hayne is going to go at fullback for the Titans in this one.

Sharks by 2- The Sharks are really struggling at the moment. But they'll break their 3 game losing steak with a tight win over the inform Roosters side.

Warriors by 10- Warriors have been ordinary in the last 2 games. But with both teams a mathematical chance of making it to the finals, the Warriors to come up on top and end the Tigers' season for good.

Rabbitohs by 20- Reynolds did play for the Rabbitohs but for only 25 minutes when it was 0-0. The Rabbitohs found a way to beat the harks without him for the rest of the game. Not sure if he is going to play here although he is named. But I think that the Rabbitohs are goimg to smash the Kinigts here. It has been a really tough season for the Knights, and the Rabbitohs are in form.

And finally... the mighty Dragons by 2- The Dragons were horrible last week, particularly in the second half. But I'm not going against my team and my pick is for us to bounce back in a close one.

Awesome. That's done. Good luck to everyone's teams this week and good luck with everyone's tip this week. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!

St.George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Sorry Reynolds played for the Rabbitohs last week but only for 25 minutes.

Good evening Tippers - slightly damp sort of day/night.
Keep an eye on the mud runners this round.

Mine for Round 25 are:

Cowboys
Storm
Sea Eagle - just for J. Lyon. Never write them off in matches like this at Brooky.
Panthers
Sharks
Warriors
Rabbitohs
Eels

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

We’re getting to the pointy end of the season here people. The penultimate round offers some important clashes this weekend. Game on!

Cowboys - Both these outfits seem to be in average form at the minute. Yes I know this is at Belmore but the Doggies will probably miss Big Sam not being there. That, and the fact that I reckon the Cowboys are better than their recent form suggests, has me leaning slightly towards the Cows. Yee-Hah!

Storm - Huge game this one! Since Round 6, the Storm Troopers have only lost twice. Dude! If they win here, that’ll be enough to secure the premiership. I’m thinking this is what’s gonna happen. Storm for me.

Raiders - The Raiders are flying and will continue on their merry way this week you would think. Shame about Jamie Lyon but that’s life. The Manly faithful know and Jamie understands. It’s all good in the end. Will it be enough to spur those Sea Eagles onwards to victory? Sorry but methinks not. Raiders in this one.

Titans - I think I read somewhere that Jarryd Hayne will be at fullback in this game. Sounds good to me. Both these teams are travelling OK at the moment and trying to pick one is proving harder than I thought. Wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if the Panthers pinched this one but based on the toughness of the Titans, Newbie is tipping the Gold Coast to just get up in this one.

Roosters - This might be closer than some may think. Given their form over the last month, I’m not that confident about the Sharks. Mind you, they are playing at home and they’re possibly due for a form reversal. I remember when my Beautiful Boys were awesome a few years ago and sides were worried about playing us (ah, glory days indeed) but go to Shark Park and they’d smash us. That always used to drive me crazy! Anyhoo, are the Sharks gonna bounce back at home or will they continue to fade? Will the Mighty Roosters get 3 in a row for the first time this year? Looks like Newbie is the only one here that thinks so! Go you Roosters. Begurk! Begurk!

Warriors - The Tigers a bit of a mess without Tedesco and they have to travel across the “dutch”. In the absence of any further qualification whatsoever, I’ll say the Warriors by at least 10.

Rabbitohs - Went back and checked and saw that the Bunnies, in the last 3 weeks, beat the Sharks, lost to the Stormers by a point and then smacked the Warriors at Mt Smart. I’d like to tip the Knights before the season’s end but just can’t bring myself to do the deed in this one. Bunnies for me.

Eels - I have absolutely no idea with this one. Neither of these teams are yelling or waving at me and getting my attention to indicate they’ll be winning this. Eels or Dragons? Eels or Dragons? Seeing as it’s at Parramatta Stadium, let’s go with Baggy’s BOYS.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points!

P.S. Who coined the phrase, "coined the phrase"? Hmmm…

LAST ONE ON THE COUCH
Another nervous week balancing on the couch but I should be OK (here’s hoping anyway) with this week’s pick. Can you put me down for the Rabbitohs please Coach. Thanks mate…

Coach Potato's picture

Newbie, Mark, and 'a'a' - you have voided this week's tipping by all taking Souths.

If anyone wants to change please do. Maybe try and put emphasis on trying to win, rather than just focusing on not losing.

Personally, I think the Knights could surprise in that game anyway. Inglis going all soft at the ground where he started his junior career.

a's picture

Okay put me down for Warrirs coach

GaryChesterUK's picture

Some great games this week! Exciting stuff!

Cowboys by 16
Storm by 16
Raiders by 6
Titans by 1
Roosters by 4
Warriors by 10
Rabbitohs by 12
Dragons by 2

I have had a good bet on Cowboys HT/FT & Storm HT/FT in a double - Pays just under 4/1 - Should pay for my sunny bank holiday weekend drinkathon.

Good luck all :)

The Thinker's picture

Good luck GaryChesterUK...and good luck on the weekend.

Newbie,
If I haven't mentioned it before I'm a big fan of the questions you pose at the end of your tips.

All the best

OK Coach please change my couch tip to Eels

newbie from perth's picture

G’day Coach,

Just rocked into work (5.30am mind you) and come across your comment re sitting on the couch. Oops, was that one of the rules with being here? Apologies for not paying enough attention bro’. I’ll go back through previous round comments and have another look tonight when I get home so I don’t eff up next time. Well, that’s assuming I get past this week. Big thanks to our friend “a” for putting his hand up. Big thanks to Mark as well. Much appreciated boys!

Thanks too Boss re “like” with the curious (some would say silly) questions I pose each week. They’re “cosmic” questions for us all to ponder. Well actually they’re purposely structured “comedic” musings gained from right across the web. There, my secret’s out! And you all thought Newbie was somehow phenomenally philosophical (or on some sort of weird illegal substance).

OK gotta go now. There’s a coffee brewing with my name on it and I’ll need to open the gates for the plebs soon. Thanks Coach! Thanks “a”! Thanks Mark! Cheers.

newbie from perth's picture

Hi again Coach,

Sorry mate, didn’t realise there was only 3 of us left standin’. My bad for not reading all comments each round. OK, reckon that’s why you mentioned what you did. The 3 of us can’t have the same pick. Makes sense. Thanks again bro’ and onya for running this for us. I reckon I’ve lasted this long by pure ass! Having great fun and love being able to brag to the boys at work about my prowess (ha-ha). There’s a couple of blokes here who’ve read your posts from time to time and they love ya! Keep stirring the pot and making people think and consider. Cheers bro’.
