Round twenty four selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

As we approach the finals there will be many games that have a significant bearing on the make-up of the top four and the top eight. This game is definitely one of them. The Bulldogs are in fourth place currently and four points clear of fifth, so you'd think they were safe, but in the next two weeks they play the two teams that are in the best position to overtake them. After this game the Broncos face the Storm, so successive losses for them in the next fortnight sees them in danger of dropping to the ugly end of the top eight. It's a big game folks. Everyone loves a turnaround story and the Broncos need to turn around a 26 point loss in round 16 if they are to keep moving forward. That's a lot of points, so what's changed between then and now? A few useful additions to the seventeen to begin with - this time around they'll have Thaiday, Glenn, McCullough and Kahu. Mind you, the Bulldogs are adding Josh Morris and Eastwood to their seventeen - very handy additions indeed. The other important change has been the form of the home side. Their defence was a real issue, but in the last two weeks there has been significant improvement. The Dragons could muster just one try in the 76th minute, while the Eels scored just three last week (and one of those was in the 77th minute when the game was over). That's not perfect and that's not top-flight opposition, but it's better than it was. That improvement in defence is important because I still have a question mark over the Bulldogs attack. In their last four games they've scored just 47 points. They're often winning, so I can't be too critical, but they'll need to find another gear if they want to make an impression at the business end. We saw about 45 minutes of the best of the Broncos last week, and that was enough to rack up eight tries. If their goal-kicker was on target a half century was in the offering. With the return of Kahu we may see an improved showing on that front. I've been waiting for the Broncos to find their mojo as we approach September and it's almost there. It looks like the game of the round, and The Thinker is actually getting off the couch and dragging himself to the game on Thursday. Get there if you can.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Broncos 20 defeated Bulldogs 10

Penrith Panthers vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – Pepper Stadium

It's crunch time for the Tigers. WIth their heartbreaking loss to the Titans last round I think they'll need to win their last three games to make the finals. None of their last three games are easy, but this one looks the least hard. These sides met in round 17 and the Tigers prevailed 34-26 at a neutral venue. This time we're in Panther country and the Tigers don't have James Tedesco. In that last meeting Tedesco was so dominant he forced the hand of NSW coach Laurie Daley in two ways:

  • Tedesco was a must-include at fullback for NSW
  • Bryce Cartwright wasn't ready for representative football...not yet at least

The absence of Tedesco on Friday night is a game-changer for mine. The Tigers have won their last three games at Pepper Stadium but they haven't been there since 2013. That means most of the players in both sides wouldn't have been around back then. Panther coach Anthony Griffin was pretty scathing of his sides performance in round 17, and they've been going swimmingly in recent weeks. A win doesn't quite guarantee the Panthers a top eight finish, but they're so very close. A game worthy of your eyeballs.

Verdict – Panthers by 7

Result - Panthers 40 defeated Tigers 10

Newcastle Knights vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

After gigs on the Gold Coast and in Sydney the Jarryd Hayne tour stops in Newcastle before making its way back to the Gold Coast and then up to Townsville. Whether the tour continues beyond that is up to the Titans, but they're in the top eight right now and that draw with the Sharks in round 21 just might be the difference between being there and being in Bali. With the Titans on an odd number their points differential isn't important but winning is. Given the circumstances this isn't the sort of game they'll be taking lightly.

Verdict – Titans by 16

Result - Titans 26 defeated Knights 6

Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Brookvale Oval

Two teams with a rich history in recent years, but while the Sea Eagles drift off the pace the purple machine keeps on keeping on. With the nutmegging of Trbojevic last round the Sea Eagles season officially ended, and their only motivating factor this weekend is to stick a fork in an old foe. I doubt that's enough. What's worse the Storm lost last week. If I told you the Storm don't lose two games in a row I would be lying...actually it's more of a fib. If you back the Storm to win following a loss you won't be right every time but you'll be right most of the time. If this game were in Melbourne I'd be picking purple by 50. The venue tightens the margin, but it doesn't change the result.

Verdict – Storm by 13

Result - Storm 38 defeated Sea Eagles 18

North Queensland Cowboys vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

As they say in North Queensland - what's going on with the Cowboys eh? And I'll take myself back to North Queensland and respond in kind - I don't know eh? Whatever is wrong needs to be righted very quickly. Note their impressive points differential, which helps their cause if they are to claw their way back into the top four, and just about ensures they get a home game in week one of the finals if they don't. The Warriors appeared on target for a finals berth until they forgot to show up against the Rabbitohs. Clearly they can bounce back, but the trip from Auckland to Townsville doesn't help. The Cowboys have lost just once at home this season - that was without Thurston and against the Storm. It's time the defending premiers steady their ship, but this won't be easy. Back the total points overs I say - this looks like one of those Cowboys 34 - Warriors 26 type of games.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Cowboys 34 defeated Warriors 6

Canberra Raiders vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

Welcome back to rugby league Semi Radradra - when he wakes up on Sunday morning it will be 0 degrees. His inclusion adds some intrigue but the most notable absence is Josh Hodgson for the Raiders. The wily pom was a deadset chance of jagging the Dally M this year, but a suspension (minus three points) and missing a game will make it hard. Baptiste steps into the dummy half role and he's more than adequate. The Raiders have knocked off the top two teams in successive weeks and have looked great in the process - last week their first try against the Storm was the fastest try all season. With the Olympics on at the moment they are, for the trivia buffs among you, the United Nations of the NRL. They have players whose heritage includes Portugal, Turkey, PNG , England, Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand and the Cook Islands. I guess all those nations have embassies in the capital. The Raiders in form and on a Sunday afternoon in Canberra. Lock it in.

Verdict – Raiders by 20

Result - Raiders 28 defeated Eels 18

Sydney Roosters vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

The Roosters are up and down like Ms Thinker on her wedding anniversary. Gutsy against the Broncos, woeful against the Panthers and red-hot against the Cowboys. That would suggest they're due to go down again, but it's hard to see them losing to the Dragons. I'm not sure where the Roosters have been all season, but they appear to be in a mini-battle with the Rabbitohs at the wrong end of the ladder. Meanwhile the Dragons are stuck in that dead zone where they can't make the eight and they can't win the spoon. Granted they pulled a game out of nowhere last week but that was the local derby and I suspect they played that game like it was their grand final. I expect their thoughts will be elsewhere this weekend. This is the Roosters last home game of the year. The joint won't be packed to the gills but the tricolours will give their most dedicated fans an enjoyable afternoon.

Verdict – Roosters by 22

Result - Roosters 42 defeated Dragons 6

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Cronulla Sharks – Monday night – ANZ Stadium

Is the bubble bursting? The team with the longest winning streak all season haven't won a game since they beat the Knights four weeks ago. They've conceded 62 points in their last two games and while the loss to the Raiders was understandable, conceding 32 points to the Dragons is baffling to say the least. Prior to that the Dragons had scored more than 20 points just once all season (and even then they lost). They look punch-drunk, and now they face a rejuvenated Rabbitohs who clocked up more than 40 points against the Warriors in New Zealand last week. If the Chooks rack up a big win on Sunday afternoon the Bunnies need to respond, and I think they will. Take note Raiders fans...a top two finish isn't out of the question.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4

Result - Rabbitohs 12 defeated Sharks 6

  • PANTHERS vs Tigers

Yeah Coach the halves in the past have all been little guys punching above their weight.
Look at Kimmorley, Johns, Langer, Lockyer and Toovey.
The new interchange rules were supposed to get the monsters out of the game but they have just gotten fitter.

mark ashford's picture

Tiger, glad to hear you know Rocket...hope you two are mates.
You had me worried there for a while.

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
It's only a 25 year gap if you don't count all the people you haven't counted. Brad Fittler...Trent Barrett...Scott hill....john Sutton is 190. Greg Inglis won a Churchill medal in the 6....he's 195.

I'm sure I could come up with more.

Coach Potato's picture

I think I said 25 didnt I?

Please though research away and find me the last high class halves pairing where the smallest was 92kg.

Yes Fortress - we'll keep the spirit alive, just like Brazil did, today.
They came to The Games and Gold Medal match with pressure all over them, after being knocked out of World Cup, mind you in Brazil by no other, than Germany. Today was get back.

I'll be tipping Wednesday this week, as I have a wedding to attend at Pokolbin (Hunter Valley) and wont get back until late on Saturday.

@Coach - yes mate, many thanks for The Coaches Couch Comp, it put a bit of extra interest into things and creative judgement among us all. Added lots of fun, to see who departed first or next, for the transit lounge.

Cheers - Big Pete

Cheers all and try and have a great week.
Big Pete C Eagle.

Evenin Fortress.

Hear ye, hear ye - I'll drink to that "The Hottest Cheerleaders".
Mate, I'd even lick their sweat.
Oh ok!, Mark A included as he love an ale and gets a bit thirsty as well.

Tigerholic seems to like The Tiger Ale.
Rocket loves an in-flight ale, so I'd guess its Tiger Ale courtesy of Tiger Air for him.

Cheers and a beer lads - Big Pete.

The Thinker's picture

It took me less than a minute

Trent Barrett - 94 kilos
Shaun Timmins - 103 kilos

Sounds like you've given up on Te Maire Martin all of a sudden. It wasn't long ago you were telling us he was the future of football....now you've shunted him for a ball-playing backrower who was filling in until Martin gets back.

Martin is nearly 20 kilos lighter than Cartwright...he better hit the gym.

Coach Potato's picture

Not just any old halves pairing, I said high class

Coach Potato's picture

Te Maire 'Martin has never played half for Penrith. He only wore the number 6 Jersey at a time when Wallace had some problems remembering he was actually hooker.

Te Maire can play a number of positions, and have never labelled him as a half. I'm sure he will be in the 17 soon. Problem is the age old thing about not changing what's not broke, akin to not driving the Lamborghini because the Porsche still goes. Personally, Blake makes errors in a game that Martin wouldn't .

Coach Potato's picture

I spoke about this earlier in the year.
I told Penrith they better let Martin play else another team will allow him to.

He left Tigers because he thought there wasn't opportunity to play first grade there. My god, look where he finds himself now.

Tamou still to slot in somewhere next year and reshuffle the team further. Cartwright has already moved out of the forwards to possibly make that easier but clearly this team, not even a finals game under their belt, already has such an oversupply of talent to accommodate.

Coach Potato's picture

Whare an injury risk throughout the year and I'd say he'll be offered a handshake. McKendry is making way for younger guns, and he might get a shake of the hand too. We also started the year with Soward and Segeyaro.

The plight of a Penrith junior is already grim for years to come if any have visions of making the local first grade team. A SuperAcademy as mentioned previously, will be simply churning out top class players for the rest of the competition.

Coach Potato's picture

Forgot Peter Hiku. Currently he doesn't fit either.

fortresseagle's picture

if u thought the nrl refs were pathetic, and take a look at the umpire in the aussie spain basketball bronze medal match. with nine seconds left on the shot clock, and the aussies clinging to a 1 point lead, the spanish drove to the basket, the umpire than calls a foul on the aussies to the disgust and amazement of the aussie players. he sennt spain to the foul line but replays show there was no obstruction at all not enough to be given a fopul . the spainsh got the required 2 points to win by 1 point...........a disgracefull decision by an inept umpire who decided the game. it casts my mind back to the game that broke my teams back when we were on a 4 game streak and hanging on with guts and determination matt the dog checchin awards a penelty to the rorters parramatta, after he and his fellow ref already called a knock on against parramatta. the player knocked on and toupu then came through but the knock on was already made what happened after that had nothing to do the with play on the 5th and final tackle the mighty eagles robbed and the boomers robbed what a farce these refs and umpires have become rorting in every sport its bout time the tab and gambling was totally banned from sport and lets have the best team and the day winning.

the mighty eagles will be back and the boomers will be back in the fiuture for glory mark my word.

the fortress telling it as it is !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steel Panther's picture

You forgot my old favorite Thinker....the Big O!!

So it looks like we've already found the Premiers for 2017 and 2018...Panthers and Tigers respectively.....

Coach Potato's picture

Might have been a crook decision Fortress but noone apart from the players themselves are to blame for them being in this match and not the big one.

a's picture

Yes that was pathetic

Coach Potato's picture

Olsen Philipina ?? Give us a break Panther.

Hows that NZ team travelling.
Pre-season favourites weren't they?

The Thinker's picture

Not enough class in that pair coach?

Barrett played 15 tests for Australia. Timmins played nine. They both played in the halves for NSW. Timmins famously slotted a winning field goal for your mob in golden point.

And you're already putting your Penrith pair ahead of them after what .... A handful of games together at club level.

The Thinker's picture

You better get in touch with the people who run the official panthers website coach....it's less up to date than this one. In the player profiles section they have Cartwright and Martin in the following positions:

Second rower
Five eighth

Amateurs.

Coach Potato's picture

At C!ub level, they were an average pair.

Again I need to ask, why do you need to stand up for everyone else whenever I will say something in favour of my own team?

Sounds like a control issue - because you must realise we are all adults and don't need to be spoken for.

fortresseagle's picture

The fortress home of the great queenslander himself cheery on top Evans !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steel Panther's picture

Coach if you've ever read any of my posts you'll see I'm the Warriors biggest critic and I have two eyes when it comes to my team. I'm not a "through good and bad times" supporter. As a fan I pay good money to watch my team and to have them continually dish up pathetic displays like they did on Saturday is a disgrace. You wouldn't see 10 dropped balls in an Under 6s game. Your point about being pre season favourites pretty much sums it up. Yea they were and as usual they failed to deliver......another "next season will be our season" chalked up....

The Thinker's picture

You seem a little sensitive there Coach.

You were talking about the Clearly/Cartwright halves combination as some sort of future blueprint for successful NRL clubs.

It's entirely possible they aren't even the future blueprint for Penrith. Moylan isn't a big man, but just about everyone expects him to move into the halves and be the next Darren Lockyer.

I'm not having a go at Penrith. Every club would love to have Cleary and Cartwright on their books. I'm having a go at your thesis.

All the players are getting bigger. Humans are getting bigger. Playmakers are getting bigger too.

I disagree with you and I said so. That's all it is. I could point to a thousand examples of you doing exactly that to others.

If you don't think Barrett and Timmins are quality that's up to you. They played 505 NRL games between them so they can't be too bad. Timmins played in the 6 for an entire Origin series on one leg. And they won the series. The Blues have tried about 400 playmakers since then without a lot of luck.

mark ashford's picture

Thinker is right about the players getting bigger.
Watched a "classic match" on Fox the other day.
Think it was from the late 80's.
Looked like a team the size of Darren Lockyer playing a team the size of Andrew Johns.
Extraordinary size difference to todays teams.

a's picture

Warriors can still make the finals you know

mark ashford's picture

"a" The Warriors can certainly make the finals if they toughen up mentally.
Their last two games are at home against the Tigers and Eels both are winnable.
If the Titans at home beat the Panthers then they are in for a chance.
The Tigers also have a slim chance needing to win their last two and other results go in their favour.
Very interesting two weeks coming up.

mark ashford's picture

Coach if you feel "picked on" by Thinker then it's perhaps that you praise your Panther players ad nauseum.
Rarely is there a word from your keyboard about any other player.
I can understand you won't praise QLD or VIC players being a NSW man but what about the Raiders, Sharks, Dogs or anyone else.

Steel Panther's picture

Mark....yes an interesting couple of weeks ahead especially in the bid for the 8th spot. I said a couple of weeks ago I think we have our top 8 already. The Warriors loss to Souths last week was extremely costly as they have now put their destiny in the hands of others. The Warriors need the Titans to lose their last two games while winning both theirs. This makes the Titans desperate this weekend knowing they travel to Townsville in the last round. Not all is lost for my team but it's a far from ideal self inflicted position they find themselves in.

Coach Potato's picture

Just wondering is Ithat I say so much that you need to balance the other side of the coin more often. If I spoke less you wouldn't have to do so much balancing .

mark ashford's picture

Coach don't want you to say less. Your passion is admirable.
Just a little more "balance" may be good.

mark ashford's picture

Kasiano has taken the early plea and will miss 2 weeks.
Who are the beneficiaries? certainly not the Broncos but the Cowboys and the Rabbits.
Corey Parker has a face full of stitches and may not be at his best if he even plays. So Storm benefit as well.
Refs didn't even blow a penalty. OK it was in the 77th minute so hard to give the Broncs an advantage.
Kasiano should be gone for the year.

Coach Potato's picture

If the NRL had any integrity it would not be possible for Kasiano to plead guilty. On the field he protested it was an accident. That he didn't see Parker. It doesn't sound possible that he can now plead guilty. If he's allowed to and he clearly is, the game's hierarchy shows again how poor they can be.

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans

I've updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp. Amazingly the only change to the NRL ladder was 14th and 15th place swapped. Every other team stayed exactly where they were. Mind you, our top 8 looks almost in place. Almost.

As for the tipping comp, plenty of us were waiting on the result tonight for a potential perfect round, but it was just Tigerholic and that knucklehead The Thinker that got 8 from 8 in the end. Well done you two.

And the tipping comp is closer than ever.....sheeeesh. I'm going to have to be extra careful with my marking over the next few weeks.

Rick currently sits at the top and he just won the Olympics competition. Surely we can't let him win both comps. Surely (Rick....I'll be in touch so I can get your $50 NRL shop voucher to you. A special thanks again to Mark Ashford for contributing to the prize. Outstanding sir).

I'll have the round 25 page published on Tuesday night and my previews and tips should be published by lunchtime on Wednesday.

All the best

Sharks are in trouble

Coach Potato's picture

Streak Tables week 24

# Did I say three weeks ago that a stat was showing Sharks still had it all to do. Yes I did. So if the Sharks are slipping in form and only the top 3 scores win the Premiership, then is it already a race in twp?

#Only just dawning on me that the Warriors Golden Point win has broken what would currently be a six game winning streak for Penrith. If only it had gone the other way, that day Panthers would now be on 30 comp points, and would have just hit a streak score of 10. So close yet now not possible. Best they can get to is 9.

#If you need 10 to make top 4 and neither Bulldogs nor Cowboys c an reach 10, does that mean streak theory is set to predict the following? :
a/ Cowboys to beat Bulldogs then lose to Titans and finish on 32
b/ Bulldogs to lose their last two to finish on 32
c/ Broncos to win their last last two to finish on 34 and claim 4th.
Surely not.

1 STORM 16 0
2 SHARKS 15 2
3 RAIDERS 12 4
4 BRONCOS 10 7
5 BULLDOGS 9 2
6 EELS 8 7
7 COWBOYS 7 3
8 PANTHERS 7 6
9 TITANS 7 7
10 WARRIORS 7 7
11 TIGERS 7 8
12 SEA EAGLES 7 12
13 DRAGONS 6 6
14 RABBITOHS 6 15
15 ROOSTERS 2 13
16 KNIGHTS 0 19

mark ashford's picture

Yes "a" Sharkies did not do themselves any favours tonight.
Rabbits forwards dominated, Fifita looks like he spent the day at MacDonald's. Gallen wouldn't have made any difference.
Being beaten by bottom of the table teams must be a worry.

mark ashford's picture

Coach your streak theory is very interesting but I think fails to take into account such things as SOO, injuries, form loss and perhaps most importantly recovery of form.
All teams throughout the year have ups and downs as proven by the Storm who have the best streak but have now lost a game in round 23
Teams that have the will to win and go that extra bit will win.
Not just because they have won so many on the trot.

Coach Potato's picture

Barrett was arguably as overrated as ex Bronco and Dragon teammate Mundine. Numb nuts personified.

Sure they both made a Grand Final, but otherwise spent much of their career making stuff-ups. Plenty of comedy capers that day too.

Dragons finally broke free from his shackles in 09, and immediately won the minor Premiership, and then the comp the next year. He won't go down in my books as any Hall Of Famer.

My point wasn't just about size.
My point is these two seem to have it all, ascwell the size asset.
My point is that Panthers are one of few teams showing any kind of innovation out on the field. Other teams will start taking notice soon enough. When teams are winning, other teams try and cooy. That's the evolution I was referring to. There's no holes in that thesis.

Only the one that judged the Panthers stuttering start to the season as something Cleary should have been held accountable for. if the season had started in June, Penrith would easily be in the top 4. That tells me enough of how things have improved.

Steel Panther's picture

Impressive round Thinker especially tipping the Bunnies. Loving your work. How can a team be undefeated in 16 straight then all of a sudden look devoid of ways to win?? Well done too Tigerholic. Will see you this weekend in Auckland!!

a's picture

Sharks will not win the premreship

Coach Potato's picture

Dragons of 2009, not the same kind of streak - there longest 7, but won 16,,lost 4 up to round 22 then lad three straight losses, some say Parra let them win round 26, and then lost two straight semis. Lost five of their last 6.

If Cronulla keep playing the way they are playing, they are looking at losing their last 5 of the season + 2 semis.

Coach Potato's picture

Raiders seem destined to feed on Shark first week.
Only thing to decide if it's in Canberra or Sydney.

Would Canberra get a home Prelim after that? Surely they do.
Interstate and International teams get one.

Doggie's picture

Hey Mark Ashford. One eyed again. At your judiciary, Thaiday should have missed the last two origins for a lifting tackle. Parker was hanging onto his leg to stop Kasiano getting to the next play. Akin to sticking your finger in someones mouth then whinging they got bitten.

Doggie's picture

By the way, good win nonetheless.

mark ashford's picture

Hey Doggie. No one even suggests the judiciary is perfect or at the least consistent.
We could all quote dozens of cases where they were too lenient or too tough.
If Parker was hanging onto the leg (and he may well have been) the refs should have blown a penalty.
It's simply too dangerous to lash out with a boot.

tigerholic's picture

Cheers Steel Panther

The Warriors will have far too much for my Tigers this weekend. I'm glad in a way that I'll be on Fraser Island where the reception is non existent so I won't have to see the bad news until next week.

Have a great week ahead of footy, hope your team gets up:)

Is the NRL going to do something about the level of refereeing and bunker decisions and bunker processes, if we want this game to be the best in the world we need fans, we will lose fans if this does not change.
