Round twenty four selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

As we approach the finals there will be many games that have a significant bearing on the make-up of the top four and the top eight. This game is definitely one of them. The Bulldogs are in fourth place currently and four points clear of fifth, so you'd think they were safe, but in the next two weeks they play the two teams that are in the best position to overtake them. After this game the Broncos face the Storm, so successive losses for them in the next fortnight sees them in danger of dropping to the ugly end of the top eight. It's a big game folks. Everyone loves a turnaround story and the Broncos need to turn around a 26 point loss in round 16 if they are to keep moving forward. That's a lot of points, so what's changed between then and now? A few useful additions to the seventeen to begin with - this time around they'll have Thaiday, Glenn, McCullough and Kahu. Mind you, the Bulldogs are adding Josh Morris and Eastwood to their seventeen - very handy additions indeed. The other important change has been the form of the home side. Their defence was a real issue, but in the last two weeks there has been significant improvement. The Dragons could muster just one try in the 76th minute, while the Eels scored just three last week (and one of those was in the 77th minute when the game was over). That's not perfect and that's not top-flight opposition, but it's better than it was. That improvement in defence is important because I still have a question mark over the Bulldogs attack. In their last four games they've scored just 47 points. They're often winning, so I can't be too critical, but they'll need to find another gear if they want to make an impression at the business end. We saw about 45 minutes of the best of the Broncos last week, and that was enough to rack up eight tries. If their goal-kicker was on target a half century was in the offering. With the return of Kahu we may see an improved showing on that front. I've been waiting for the Broncos to find their mojo as we approach September and it's almost there. It looks like the game of the round, and The Thinker is actually getting off the couch and dragging himself to the game on Thursday. Get there if you can.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Broncos 20 defeated Bulldogs 10

Penrith Panthers vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – Pepper Stadium

It's crunch time for the Tigers. WIth their heartbreaking loss to the Titans last round I think they'll need to win their last three games to make the finals. None of their last three games are easy, but this one looks the least hard. These sides met in round 17 and the Tigers prevailed 34-26 at a neutral venue. This time we're in Panther country and the Tigers don't have James Tedesco. In that last meeting Tedesco was so dominant he forced the hand of NSW coach Laurie Daley in two ways:

  • Tedesco was a must-include at fullback for NSW
  • Bryce Cartwright wasn't ready for representative football...not yet at least

The absence of Tedesco on Friday night is a game-changer for mine. The Tigers have won their last three games at Pepper Stadium but they haven't been there since 2013. That means most of the players in both sides wouldn't have been around back then. Panther coach Anthony Griffin was pretty scathing of his sides performance in round 17, and they've been going swimmingly in recent weeks. A win doesn't quite guarantee the Panthers a top eight finish, but they're so very close. A game worthy of your eyeballs.

Verdict – Panthers by 7

Result - Panthers 40 defeated Tigers 10

Newcastle Knights vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

After gigs on the Gold Coast and in Sydney the Jarryd Hayne tour stops in Newcastle before making its way back to the Gold Coast and then up to Townsville. Whether the tour continues beyond that is up to the Titans, but they're in the top eight right now and that draw with the Sharks in round 21 just might be the difference between being there and being in Bali. With the Titans on an odd number their points differential isn't important but winning is. Given the circumstances this isn't the sort of game they'll be taking lightly.

Verdict – Titans by 16

Result - Titans 26 defeated Knights 6

Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Brookvale Oval

Two teams with a rich history in recent years, but while the Sea Eagles drift off the pace the purple machine keeps on keeping on. With the nutmegging of Trbojevic last round the Sea Eagles season officially ended, and their only motivating factor this weekend is to stick a fork in an old foe. I doubt that's enough. What's worse the Storm lost last week. If I told you the Storm don't lose two games in a row I would be lying...actually it's more of a fib. If you back the Storm to win following a loss you won't be right every time but you'll be right most of the time. If this game were in Melbourne I'd be picking purple by 50. The venue tightens the margin, but it doesn't change the result.

Verdict – Storm by 13

Result - Storm 38 defeated Sea Eagles 18

North Queensland Cowboys vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

As they say in North Queensland - what's going on with the Cowboys eh? And I'll take myself back to North Queensland and respond in kind - I don't know eh? Whatever is wrong needs to be righted very quickly. Note their impressive points differential, which helps their cause if they are to claw their way back into the top four, and just about ensures they get a home game in week one of the finals if they don't. The Warriors appeared on target for a finals berth until they forgot to show up against the Rabbitohs. Clearly they can bounce back, but the trip from Auckland to Townsville doesn't help. The Cowboys have lost just once at home this season - that was without Thurston and against the Storm. It's time the defending premiers steady their ship, but this won't be easy. Back the total points overs I say - this looks like one of those Cowboys 34 - Warriors 26 type of games.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Cowboys 34 defeated Warriors 6

Canberra Raiders vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

Welcome back to rugby league Semi Radradra - when he wakes up on Sunday morning it will be 0 degrees. His inclusion adds some intrigue but the most notable absence is Josh Hodgson for the Raiders. The wily pom was a deadset chance of jagging the Dally M this year, but a suspension (minus three points) and missing a game will make it hard. Baptiste steps into the dummy half role and he's more than adequate. The Raiders have knocked off the top two teams in successive weeks and have looked great in the process - last week their first try against the Storm was the fastest try all season. With the Olympics on at the moment they are, for the trivia buffs among you, the United Nations of the NRL. They have players whose heritage includes Portugal, Turkey, PNG , England, Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand and the Cook Islands. I guess all those nations have embassies in the capital. The Raiders in form and on a Sunday afternoon in Canberra. Lock it in.

Verdict – Raiders by 20

Result - Raiders 28 defeated Eels 18

Sydney Roosters vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

The Roosters are up and down like Ms Thinker on her wedding anniversary. Gutsy against the Broncos, woeful against the Panthers and red-hot against the Cowboys. That would suggest they're due to go down again, but it's hard to see them losing to the Dragons. I'm not sure where the Roosters have been all season, but they appear to be in a mini-battle with the Rabbitohs at the wrong end of the ladder. Meanwhile the Dragons are stuck in that dead zone where they can't make the eight and they can't win the spoon. Granted they pulled a game out of nowhere last week but that was the local derby and I suspect they played that game like it was their grand final. I expect their thoughts will be elsewhere this weekend. This is the Roosters last home game of the year. The joint won't be packed to the gills but the tricolours will give their most dedicated fans an enjoyable afternoon.

Verdict – Roosters by 22

Result - Roosters 42 defeated Dragons 6

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Cronulla Sharks – Monday night – ANZ Stadium

Is the bubble bursting? The team with the longest winning streak all season haven't won a game since they beat the Knights four weeks ago. They've conceded 62 points in their last two games and while the loss to the Raiders was understandable, conceding 32 points to the Dragons is baffling to say the least. Prior to that the Dragons had scored more than 20 points just once all season (and even then they lost). They look punch-drunk, and now they face a rejuvenated Rabbitohs who clocked up more than 40 points against the Warriors in New Zealand last week. If the Chooks rack up a big win on Sunday afternoon the Bunnies need to respond, and I think they will. Take note Raiders fans...a top two finish isn't out of the question.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4

Result - Rabbitohs 12 defeated Sharks 6

St.GeorgeillawarraDragonsfan4ever's picture

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Broncos by 12- The Broncos are back and are going to beat the Buldogs here to keep it going.

Panthers by 14- The Panthers to get a big win over the Tigers here. The Panthers are just in magnificent form at the moment and they'll keep it going here. The Tigers without Tedesco won't make it to the finals although they have Brooks back, they'll lose big here.

Titans by 24- The Titans to smash the Knights here.

Storm by 1- Storm to just beat the Sea Eagles here in an absolute thriller.

Cowboys by 16- The Cowboys to get a big win over the Warriors here.

Raiders by 14- No Hodgson, no worries, the Raiders to keep the streak going here with a big win over the Eels here.

Dragons by 2- The mighty Dragons to just beat the Roosters here.

And finally... The Sharks by 10- With no Adam Reynolds for the Rabbitohs which will effect their kicking game a lot, the Sharks to get back into the winners circle here.

Awesome. That's done. Good luck with everyone's teams this week and good luck with everyone's tips. Cheers!!!!!!

BigPeteBx's picture

Good work Gary with throwing in your thoughts/tips.
You'll be there next season - Thinkers Comp needs consistent weekly tippers.

EPL has kicked off. I was reading over an article the other night which showed a comparison of NRL Clubs to who they would be in EPL.
Quite an interesting read. Yes Manly and Man Utd were paired together as clubs that everyone loves to hate.

Cheers - Big Pete

Good to see the broncos got some mongrel back, convincing win over the dogs, on fire for finals footy.

mark ashford's picture

Any thing to say Coach.
Broncos were stronger, faster and smarter.
Yes the Dogs were bigger but didn't help.
Big Sams kick to Corey's face was a dog act.
Do you think Des will praise the Broncos?

Coach Potato's picture

Good win by the Broncos in what was another dour affair.
It that's the Bennett plan, to now convert them into a Dragons style team, I think it might work at against a number of teams. Structured defence against teams that structure their sets of six before they happen. The Broncos are doing well against those teams. Its a style that's pulled them out of a hole. But what to do against the ones that play with less structure and more creativity. Chaotic styles that often confuse a structured defence. That's the test.

Don't get me wrong. I think the Dragon-ised Broncos are now able to match the Storm and Roosters in coming games. That could be good enough to steal 4th place. Just not convinced a Dragon-ised team can win it this year.

mark ashford's picture

Jesus Coach. You now compare the broncs to the dragons style??????
You have lost your mojo my friend. What a pathetic statement.
Broncs play their own game....what a crap statement

The Thinker's picture

Short memory there Coach. Seven days ago the Broncos scored 6 tries in 33 minutes against the Eels.

They did what they had to do to win tonight....and they were very solid.

80% completion rate and just 7 errors all night. They always looked like the winner tonight and they were playing a team that's won 7 of their last 8.

They are still a premiership threat.

The Thinker's picture

Here are the last five Broncos games in season 2015:

* R22 - Lost 16-18 to the Bulldogs
* R23 - Won 32-6 over the Dragons
* R24 - Lost 10-12 to the Roosters
* R25 - Won 47-12 over the Rabbitohs
* R26 - Lost 8-15 to the Storm

And here are the last five games for the Broncos in season 2016:
* R22 - Won 12-8 over the Dragons
* R23 - Won 38-16 over the Eels
* R24 - Won 20-10 over the Bulldogs
* R25 - Storm ?
* R26 - Roosters ?

I think a huge Thurston dummy was thrown by telling of support for Roosters and Cowboys.

Not much doubt that posts are all about the Broncos.

I understand about trying to promote the page as pro-NRL, not pro-Brisbane / pro-Qld, but fail makes on that score abound daily.

Broncos are back

Again we are nearing the end of another season , I hope you all return next season because I sure will be doing the same as I did this season .

GaryChesterUK's picture

Hi Pete, Yeah I'm quite an avid NRL fan now so may well get involved next year! I do always wonder which NRL clubs are historically popular/unpopular/well supported etc etc. I didn't realise Manly were so unpopular - whats the reason?

Another thing, whilst the NRL is miles ahead of Super League, what does baffle me is the lack of ground made when NRL teams get a penalty, in the first half today the Dogs had a penalty about 40 out and kicked into touch pretty much in the same spot. I know its frustrating if a penalty stays in the field but so many NRL penalties make hardly any ground! Our mugs in the Super League tend to gain 30 yards or so on average I'd say!

The Thinker's picture

No show and go from me Coach. Most of my comments about the Broncos are responses to your comments about the Broncos. If you want to hear less about them you know what to do.

I will add something interesting about the Broncos though, and those who dislike them (and there are many) should take note:

I happened to meet David Gyngell last year. Who the heck is that I hear most of you say? David Gyngell is a league tragic, a Roosters tragic and until recently was the CEO of Nine Entertainment. He negotiated the free to air broadcasting agreement between the Nine Network and the NRL. He's probably most famous for getting into a punch up with Jamie Packer on a Sydney street some time ago.

I mention his name because the topic of the NRL broadcast deal came up. He's the reason the Broncos are on Thursday or Friday night nearly every round. He's been in the media business for decades and if he's not the smartest person in the media game in this country he's on the podium. He believes that the success of the Broncos contributes about 35-40% to the value of the broadcast rights package. That's right. One team in a 16 team competition is worth 35-40% of the money the competition gets from the FTA broadcaster.

The NRL competition is dependent on the broadcast deal, and the NRL gets a better broadcast deal because of the Broncos. All the teams in the NRL are dependent on funding from the NRL...and that funding comes from the broadcast deal.

So hate them if you must, but they're helping to fund your club.

Steel Panther's picture

I understand the Warriors sell the highest number of replica jerseys Thinker.....?? Not quite in the same league (no pun intended) as Brisbane's contribution to the NRL but surely it has to count for something.....lol

The Thinker's picture

Steel Panther,

Funny you should mention the Warriors - the three most important clubs in the NRL, from a broadcasting point of view, in order:

Broncos, Storm, Warriors

Even with all the replica jerseys the Warriors punch above their weight.

fortresseagle's picture

Very strong win by the broncos over the grubs the bulldogs. Sam kasinanos kick to Parkers face was a dog act a dirty foul act. He said sorry ok but he knew what he was doing he must think were all mugs the big blob.

Nothing better but to knock off the cheats the storm at the fortress tommorrow the boys have pride and will be playing for Jamie Lyon a true legend a mighty eagle going to miss you killer and the his last game against Canberra next week at the fortress will be packed out to send the greatest centre of the modern era out on a winning note.

Have a great arvo and evening everyone !!!!!!!!!

The fortress home of the killer the Lyon king!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steel Panther's picture

It's just a pity Thinker that the Warriors off field value doesn't convert to the playing field.......

mark ashford's picture

Don't despair Steel, your Warriors have proved themselves a very capable team this year.
You have recorded wins this season against Knights, Roosters, Dogs, Dragons, Broncos, Titans and Panthers some of those twice.
You have the hardest road trips of any team.
13 trips across "the ditch" including Townsville and Perth.
Don't forget a lot of NZ's best players are contracted to Aussie teams.
In a Rugby Union mad country I think your guys do pretty well.

Coach Potato's picture

?so why defend the Broncos because someone doesn't like them?
Wouldn't being fair / without bias mean coming to the defence or all teams equally? Why do the Broncos deserve so much saving.
I think that case has more holes in it than a box of Krispy Kreams.

More than interesting to know that the Darius Boyd and Bevan French knock-forward-regather tries both favoured Darius's teams - Qld and Broncos. Being told they were both correct is no different to hearing Archer defend the indefensible.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Thinker, I detest the Bronco's, but as I said to my mate as we cleared the gates from the Milton end of Suncorp, there are few prettier sights than that ground looming out of all the seats. I do love Suncorp, but advocate just as fiercely for suburban grounds for the PEOPLE to watch the game at their local. And your right, the Bronco's put 34,000 bums on seats against a team with nothing to play for, that's something that no Sydney club can do regularly. Hoping with the new Pirtek development that we can build that type of ground swell within the community to challenge the Bronco's for Friday nights on the cold hard cash side of the equation.
The PEOPLE rate the Bronco's highly with both T.V. ratings and at ground attendance, a winning combo.

a's picture

Cowboys will be back tomrrow

mark ashford's picture

Coach your Broncos/Bennett hate is all consuming.
Where did this come from?
Your Panthers have beaten the Broncs twice this season.
Isn't that enough to sooth your ego.
Thinker stating facts, not defending the Broncos has fired you up again.
Your Panthers have had many decisions go their way as do most clubs.
Take a chill pill mate and just enjoy the footy.

Coach Potato's picture

Gary from the United Country Broke Away.

Here is a 2 1/2 minute history lesson in Australian Rugby League and it's tribal culture.

Going back to the 60s and 70s, even 80s, if you were good enough to play first grade, you played for your local team, whoever that might be. Club rivalry, much like soccer in your neck, was built on territoritorial behaviour, mostly through the fact that your local team truly represented the area.

Manly many consider, broke the mould. In lots of ways would show as a club ahead of its time. They decided to bring players to their club from outside the local area. Many die-hards saw it akih to using the Lord's name in vain - or saying the F word in earshot of your mum, or worse, your old man. In other words, not the done thing.

Manly being from the wealthier side of town, many concluded that it all came down to the lure of dollars, and they would forever become known as the Silvertales. Almost unanimously, other teams were united in hating Manly for "stealing" players from their own team. What's more , it coincided with Manly's firsr successful period.
Western Suburbs better known for fibro clad housing starting tagging themselves the Fibros in answer to the Silvertails, and a fierce rivalry was born. Not that Wests won many scoreboard battles.

Truth is, the other teams soon resorted to the "if you can't beat 'em, join en" practice of buying up players themselves including the odd pom.

It's been decades since the Silvertale tag got coined, and teams these days all buy players from wherever,, but somehow Manly remain persecuted, in hindsight for being fore-runners, but at the time, as I say,for doing not the done thing.

1982,a decade after Manly's first Premiership saw the entry of the first Qld team, the Brisbane Broncos.

The very same year, the State of Origin was born.

To any New South Welshman at the time, the hatred for anything Qld was human instinct. After all, Rugby League tribalism is all about territory, and who was this team from Qld doing trying to win the NSWRL comp? Much in the same regard as Manly, the Broncos team was literally the State of Origin run-on side. They were hated for having that kind of advantage over many other smaller clubs, and similarly, much like Manly, the Broncos went through an unbeatable period and fans from all over united in hating Brisbane for fielding the State team, not just for their six fingers.

So that's me. That's how I see what it is about Manly and the Broncos. No offence to either. Back then it was the way things were. Rght now it still is what it is.

Baggy

Western Sydney deserves a world class rugby league stadium. In fact...it deserves two.

ANZ...for the big games, and a smaller 25000ish seat venue.

Pirtek makes perfect sense...because they play the round ball code there too.

GaryChesterUK's picture

Cheers Coach. I'll take that on board, though I'm sure there will be those on the forum that don't agree with some things that you said :)

Speaking of the Wests, poor poor defence from them today, the amount of tackles the panthers are breaking is rare to see in the NRL

Coach Potato's picture

Thinker, don't bother.
Good or bad, don't really care what your summary says

#NoNeedForMouthJustEyes

mark ashford's picture

Gary, Coach's comment reasonable accurate except for his reference about the introduction of the Broncos and State of Origin.
Prior to Origin football there were many QLders playing for NSW teams.
The NSW clubs had "poker machines" whereas QLD did not.
NSW could offer good money for good players so a lot of QLDers were playing for NSW clubs.
We had a yearly battle where NSW V QLD did not rate much as QLD was flogged by a NSW team containing many QLDers
This changed with the introduction of State of Origin.
Where QLD has dominated for years.
There is a genuine NSW/QLD hatred about Origin and Coach for some reason also hates the Broncos.
NSW thinks it owns Rugby League in this country, a bit like Man U. on your territory.

Baggy_Gee's picture

That is a massive assistance in getting a good stadium. But while a pair of good venues is a great thing, Penrith proved tonight that 14500 at a small intimate stadium is a great atmosphere. Better than 14500 triple spaced to make ANZ look full.

a's picture

Wow what a win for Panthers

mark ashford's picture

You NSW people make me laugh. Have a look at the Storm, Cowboys, Titans, Broncos crowds and you're crowing about 14500
In RL most populated city. Having a lend fellows.

Apart from that well done Coach your Panthers were a dominate force tonight. Will go deep into the finals.

Coach Potato's picture

Mark, I got my stats wrong. Woops not again.

Broncos formed about a half a dozen years after Origin started.
But that's where I would say the hatred come from.

6 years of this mid season game where you hated that other State, and then a maroon coloured team joins the comp, as if to wave their State colour around the place. They were practically the State team themselves, and who was their leader? None other than King Wally, the most hated of them all. NSW club team fans have long regarded Wally and his Broncos as the Qld team. When teams came up against the Broncos, it was as if they were taking on Qld. Fans really have had no choice about it their emotions. Broncos and Qld, we see them as the same thing - and as I say, for a long tome, they were. Its just natural territorial behaviour. We all display it. It's normal human instinct and I don't think it's something to discourage.

Club and State tribalism. It's something to relish, not harness.

Coach Potato's picture

Ha.
I wonder if it's because I told people to shut their mouths, or whether their mouth is snap shut all by itself because you wouldbt know there was a game played tonight.

You choose to break the mould, Mark.
Integrity is certainly a handy personal quality.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Not crowing about the crowd, just pointing out that it's better to pack them in a small ground than a large. Being a broncos fan is effecting your comprehension Mark. That 22500 at suncorp on Thursday night would have felt empty. 33000 was comfortably full.

Coach Potato's picture

You do make a great point Baggy.

How sad that the Sharks will lose vital home-field advantage throughout the finals series. Interstate teams finishing 5th and 6th could host a home final, but not possibly the minor premier.

In the lead up to the Grand Final, "all" games should be played at the clubs home ground. The AFL system rewards this to the higher placed team, and ia regarded as a right. Smaller grounds count when it comes to home ground advantage. Name any team that wanted to play away in front of those 14k tonight?

When it comes to the Grand Final. It deserves to be on thw biggest stage.

My views are not contradictory.
The lead-ups including prelims should be home ground games.
The big one should be played at the big one.

Thanks Tiger.
Integrity is appreciated on this site.

Coach Potato's picture

It's not all over Tigers.

Know that most footy experts aren't expert mathematicians.
Telling you that 28 points with a minus 70 differential won't be enough points is just rubbish.

If you are the only team left on 28 points, I'm pretty sure they don't worry what your for and against is.

There's a lot that has to happen for that to eventuate but just relates to Tigers winning two games by any score, and other teams losing.

Ironically, and sadly, these buffoon experts have already got you thinking you need to beat Warriors by 50 and then do the same to the Rsiders. Go into the last two games with that caution to the wind mindset and you probably won't win either.

Someone needs to pull your team aside, put their hands on your upper arms, shake you one by one, and have you realise you need two wins. The rest is up to the other teams. There might only be one team on 28.

fortresseagle's picture

Penrith clinical in there thrashing of the tigers would tedesco made a difference I don't know. But the way the panthers played the tigers could of scored a few more but in my mind still not won.

The panthers very much the dark horse and a panthers vs broncos grand final would set up a fiery game on the field and on this site could happen.

The mighty eagles against arch rivals the storm should be a cracker would love us to knock em off the boys to lift for the killer the Lyon king come on boys let's give him the double win and send him out a winner a champion player a champion bloke

Go get em boys!!!!!!!!!!

Sheesh Coach....you told me not to comment on the game, then you criticize for me not commenting on the game. I'm glad you're not my wife. :-)

The Panthers have played 22 games this year and I've tipped them to win 14 times. They've won 12.

I've had two long range season bets on the NRL this year. I backed the Broncos to win the Premiership and I backed the Panthers to finish in the top eight at $3.50. I mentioned it on this site at the time, I told you all they were under-rated and that price was generous. If you want to back them now to make the top eight, the price is $1.01.

I'm not anti-Panther, and they were good last night.
