Round twenty four selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

As we approach the finals there will be many games that have a significant bearing on the make-up of the top four and the top eight. This game is definitely one of them. The Bulldogs are in fourth place currently and four points clear of fifth, so you'd think they were safe, but in the next two weeks they play the two teams that are in the best position to overtake them. After this game the Broncos face the Storm, so successive losses for them in the next fortnight sees them in danger of dropping to the ugly end of the top eight. It's a big game folks. Everyone loves a turnaround story and the Broncos need to turn around a 26 point loss in round 16 if they are to keep moving forward. That's a lot of points, so what's changed between then and now? A few useful additions to the seventeen to begin with - this time around they'll have Thaiday, Glenn, McCullough and Kahu. Mind you, the Bulldogs are adding Josh Morris and Eastwood to their seventeen - very handy additions indeed. The other important change has been the form of the home side. Their defence was a real issue, but in the last two weeks there has been significant improvement. The Dragons could muster just one try in the 76th minute, while the Eels scored just three last week (and one of those was in the 77th minute when the game was over). That's not perfect and that's not top-flight opposition, but it's better than it was. That improvement in defence is important because I still have a question mark over the Bulldogs attack. In their last four games they've scored just 47 points. They're often winning, so I can't be too critical, but they'll need to find another gear if they want to make an impression at the business end. We saw about 45 minutes of the best of the Broncos last week, and that was enough to rack up eight tries. If their goal-kicker was on target a half century was in the offering. With the return of Kahu we may see an improved showing on that front. I've been waiting for the Broncos to find their mojo as we approach September and it's almost there. It looks like the game of the round, and The Thinker is actually getting off the couch and dragging himself to the game on Thursday. Get there if you can.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Broncos 20 defeated Bulldogs 10

Penrith Panthers vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – Pepper Stadium

It's crunch time for the Tigers. WIth their heartbreaking loss to the Titans last round I think they'll need to win their last three games to make the finals. None of their last three games are easy, but this one looks the least hard. These sides met in round 17 and the Tigers prevailed 34-26 at a neutral venue. This time we're in Panther country and the Tigers don't have James Tedesco. In that last meeting Tedesco was so dominant he forced the hand of NSW coach Laurie Daley in two ways:

  • Tedesco was a must-include at fullback for NSW
  • Bryce Cartwright wasn't ready for representative football...not yet at least

The absence of Tedesco on Friday night is a game-changer for mine. The Tigers have won their last three games at Pepper Stadium but they haven't been there since 2013. That means most of the players in both sides wouldn't have been around back then. Panther coach Anthony Griffin was pretty scathing of his sides performance in round 17, and they've been going swimmingly in recent weeks. A win doesn't quite guarantee the Panthers a top eight finish, but they're so very close. A game worthy of your eyeballs.

Verdict – Panthers by 7

Result - Panthers 40 defeated Tigers 10

Newcastle Knights vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

After gigs on the Gold Coast and in Sydney the Jarryd Hayne tour stops in Newcastle before making its way back to the Gold Coast and then up to Townsville. Whether the tour continues beyond that is up to the Titans, but they're in the top eight right now and that draw with the Sharks in round 21 just might be the difference between being there and being in Bali. With the Titans on an odd number their points differential isn't important but winning is. Given the circumstances this isn't the sort of game they'll be taking lightly.

Verdict – Titans by 16

Result - Titans 26 defeated Knights 6

Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Brookvale Oval

Two teams with a rich history in recent years, but while the Sea Eagles drift off the pace the purple machine keeps on keeping on. With the nutmegging of Trbojevic last round the Sea Eagles season officially ended, and their only motivating factor this weekend is to stick a fork in an old foe. I doubt that's enough. What's worse the Storm lost last week. If I told you the Storm don't lose two games in a row I would be lying...actually it's more of a fib. If you back the Storm to win following a loss you won't be right every time but you'll be right most of the time. If this game were in Melbourne I'd be picking purple by 50. The venue tightens the margin, but it doesn't change the result.

Verdict – Storm by 13

Result - Storm 38 defeated Sea Eagles 18

North Queensland Cowboys vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

As they say in North Queensland - what's going on with the Cowboys eh? And I'll take myself back to North Queensland and respond in kind - I don't know eh? Whatever is wrong needs to be righted very quickly. Note their impressive points differential, which helps their cause if they are to claw their way back into the top four, and just about ensures they get a home game in week one of the finals if they don't. The Warriors appeared on target for a finals berth until they forgot to show up against the Rabbitohs. Clearly they can bounce back, but the trip from Auckland to Townsville doesn't help. The Cowboys have lost just once at home this season - that was without Thurston and against the Storm. It's time the defending premiers steady their ship, but this won't be easy. Back the total points overs I say - this looks like one of those Cowboys 34 - Warriors 26 type of games.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Cowboys 34 defeated Warriors 6

Canberra Raiders vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

Welcome back to rugby league Semi Radradra - when he wakes up on Sunday morning it will be 0 degrees. His inclusion adds some intrigue but the most notable absence is Josh Hodgson for the Raiders. The wily pom was a deadset chance of jagging the Dally M this year, but a suspension (minus three points) and missing a game will make it hard. Baptiste steps into the dummy half role and he's more than adequate. The Raiders have knocked off the top two teams in successive weeks and have looked great in the process - last week their first try against the Storm was the fastest try all season. With the Olympics on at the moment they are, for the trivia buffs among you, the United Nations of the NRL. They have players whose heritage includes Portugal, Turkey, PNG , England, Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand and the Cook Islands. I guess all those nations have embassies in the capital. The Raiders in form and on a Sunday afternoon in Canberra. Lock it in.

Verdict – Raiders by 20

Result - Raiders 28 defeated Eels 18

Sydney Roosters vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

The Roosters are up and down like Ms Thinker on her wedding anniversary. Gutsy against the Broncos, woeful against the Panthers and red-hot against the Cowboys. That would suggest they're due to go down again, but it's hard to see them losing to the Dragons. I'm not sure where the Roosters have been all season, but they appear to be in a mini-battle with the Rabbitohs at the wrong end of the ladder. Meanwhile the Dragons are stuck in that dead zone where they can't make the eight and they can't win the spoon. Granted they pulled a game out of nowhere last week but that was the local derby and I suspect they played that game like it was their grand final. I expect their thoughts will be elsewhere this weekend. This is the Roosters last home game of the year. The joint won't be packed to the gills but the tricolours will give their most dedicated fans an enjoyable afternoon.

Verdict – Roosters by 22

Result - Roosters 42 defeated Dragons 6

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Cronulla Sharks – Monday night – ANZ Stadium

Is the bubble bursting? The team with the longest winning streak all season haven't won a game since they beat the Knights four weeks ago. They've conceded 62 points in their last two games and while the loss to the Raiders was understandable, conceding 32 points to the Dragons is baffling to say the least. Prior to that the Dragons had scored more than 20 points just once all season (and even then they lost). They look punch-drunk, and now they face a rejuvenated Rabbitohs who clocked up more than 40 points against the Warriors in New Zealand last week. If the Chooks rack up a big win on Sunday afternoon the Bunnies need to respond, and I think they will. Take note Raiders fans...a top two finish isn't out of the question.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4

Result - Rabbitohs 12 defeated Sharks 6

Wally Lewis - round twenty-four selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • BRONCOS vs Bulldogs
  • PANTHERS vs Tigers
  • Knights vs TITANS
  • Sea Eagles vs STORM
  • COWBOYS vs Warriors
  • RAIDERS vs Eels
  • ROOSTERS vs Dragons
  • Rabbitohs vs SHARKS

Coach Potato's picture

I'm sure they will if they beat Penrith next week.
If not, maybe not.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Great effort by the panthers coach cleaned up another bottom of the competition side they are a real threat this year just like you told us ????

Coach Potato's picture

A bottom of the competition side certainly made mince meat of the Premiers last week didn't they?

Are you saying that's a form line?

Rocket Ryan's picture

This is the NRL there is talent in all sides coach being able to consistently deliver is the want the cowboys are consistently better than the roosters this year one off the pace the other up and bingo a upset of opinion I am of the opinion your panthers cannot win the flag thats only my opinion the test is coming .

Good Saturday afternoon to you all.

Dont know if u r all aware, but there is a site called Team Uggs that sells slip on sheep skin type ugg slippers (TUGGS).

The great thing is that they are doing them in your favourite NRL Clubs. So drop a hint for Fathers Day. They retail at $59.99 and NO, I'm not marketing for them, just letting my Tipper Friends know about them.

More of a Summery item to me, as we'd freeze our ankles off here with them.

Cheers and my community service done, for this week.
Talk later and Manly to win by 2 pts at Brooky, later today.
Big Pete

Coach Potato's picture

Rocket, did you write that from fortress's phone because that was a 61-word sentence that didn't say too much.

Somewhere in there it talked about consistency being the key. Panthers have been just about the most consistent team week in week out all year, so if that's what you say is needed, then there's no doubt the Panthers worry you a whole lot.

a's picture

Yes Panthers are good at beating Broncos

fortresseagle's picture

Baggy not an open cheque book are you on the turps mate or a screw loose you were caught for salary cap breeches getting players under false pretences.

Surely baggy your not keeping up with the rorts your team committed or you have been sleeping under a rock.

Fair dinkum baggy it's very hard for you to come to terms with your open cheque book club what a joke comment you made and what a joke club you follow!!!!!

Please coach don't insult my intelligence weather you believe it or not I have a fair understanding of the game. My comments are straight to the point and my opinions u may not agree but I'm intiteled to my opinion ok. The has bagging and crap the media and commentators go on about they think that everything they say is gospel, they know no more than me or many others on this site.

Anyway coach you should be happy with your win enjoy your weekend.

Come on boys let's give it to the king cheats the storm go the mighty sea eagles!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Potato's picture

I have no doubt you know your stuff Fortress,. Got keep up the interclub banter though.

No chance on finals for Manly now and Panthers going well. That equals a poor visitor turnout. No matter the difference will get made up in extra Panther fans.

Was interesting to work out when the last time Panthers scored 120+ in a three game period. Was round 24, 25, 26 in 2010. Beat teams 9, 13, and 14. So similar to this year's 10, 15, and 16.

What's different is there's still two more weeks before finals and will be against a better standard opposition. We will go to the finals with a couple of tough games under the belt. Win or lose they will be better preparation than the way the draw fell in 2010.

mark ashford's picture

Well the Titans march on. Sorry to see Ryan James out there but don't think a suspension would have helped the Knights.
No Tedesco certainly helped the Panthers last night but again don't think it would have made a difference to the result.
Coach gets angry when commentators say the Tigers played poorly, thus taking away from his teams win and I don't blame him.
IMO the Panthers have a team of players who each show amazing individual strength. Gets them going forward, making breaks and winning games.
I'm not going soft Coach but credit where credit is due.
Hope we meet again some time in the finals.

Coach Potato's picture

Panthers are destined to play a Qld team in week 1.
Which one, and where is the only thing not sorted.

No matter. We will play anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Coach Potato's picture

Mark,
Integrity is a show of strength, not a sign of weakness.

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Coach but as I said credit where credit is due.
Cartwright, Mansour, Peachey, Moylan, Cleary, Campbell - Gillard and the xdragon (can't recall his name) all play well above their weight.
You have a team Coach, a very good team.

mark ashford's picture

Sorry Fortress and BigPete, your Manly threw everything they had at the Storm tonight. Great game of footy.
Smith, Cronk and Munster just too good.
Nothing to be ashamed about.

Steel Panther's picture

Warriors have made 5 handling errors in the first 21 minutes. How the hell can you win games with that effort. It could be a cricket score tonight!!!

Coach Potato's picture

Tigers - Warriors game next week will be winner has a chance , loser is out.

mark ashford's picture

Tailspin and "a' your Cowboys were the dominate team in every respect.
Congrats on a great win.

a's picture

Yes the Cowboys are back baby they will play Bulldogs for a top 4 spot

Warriors and Tigers face of in sudden death the winner will have a chance of knocking of the loser of the Panthers and Titans match

Coach Potato's picture

Ummm watcha been smokin 'a'? Must be good stuff.
Anyway Tigers play Raiders and Warriors play Eels round 26.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Mark you heaped plenty of praise on the panthers credit fot being flat track bullies when the Dynamite dreams blow up you will be covered in debris called integrity

tigerholic's picture

Rocket

Have you swallowed a "how to write I'm a dummy comments" book? Even fortress makes more sense, stop trying to sound like you are half an educated type, you are only an old hay covered farmer trying to make it in the big league.

Just stick to your one finals and out team, at least we may read your posts.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Panthers will be 1 final and out not broncs you start dreaming of ways to not back your side next year cause we have heard em all from you this year tigerholic my foot.

The Thinker's picture

Thinker on the Cowboys v Warriors game:
"Back the total points overs I say - this looks like one of those Cowboys 34 - Warriors 26 type of games."

At least I was half right.

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Mark - I didn't get to see the game, but felt something might bring luck back at Brooky.
Your kind supportive comments are appreciated.

Good HARD win by Brazil (Football) this morning.

I like the suggestion you put up back in Round 23 about Thinkers identity. That of course, is up to Thinker to decide on.
I'd like the same suggested with our Coach. He sounds like a retired bookmaker, an ex maths teacher (Chalky) or maybe Bureau of Statistics
"statistician".

@Thinker - may I ask Thinker, did you ever say you came from Newcastle area (Waratah/Mayfield) and if so, do I seem to have located that a person by your name played with St George....or is that just pure coincidence.

Cheers and have a nice day.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello Gazza from Chester.
Re yours of Fri 9.15am, whilst I was at work.

Yes Coach just about rounded it all up with his evaluation of Manly from bygone years.
However, Manly set the precedence for what exists today and without doing that type of player business in sport , rugby league would still be in closets, today.
Re ground made from kick for touch (awarded penalty) - usually it is a possession thing, if they cant convert for goal depending on the differential and all that jazz. Better to get another 6 tackles and a possible try than kick longer and lose possession.
Others will have their version, of course.

Cheers and keep well
Big Pete

tigerholic's picture

Rocket

How would you rate your performance this year on this site, give us one of your political no brainer answers.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Good tipster has not had any luck cannot stand the panthers.

Coach Potato's picture

Which game did you hate Panthers more Rocket :
23 - 22 or 31 - 12?

Coach Potato's picture

# Looks like the Olympic page has closed. Two things
Sorry Rick, got prizes and comps mixed up. Your prize pending correct weight is two x $25 vouchers as far as I recall. Enough to buy a beanie or too.

# Last One On The Couch could be over today.
Mark is safe with the Titans, whilst 'a' and Newbie need Roosters to get up. Should the Dragons win, Mark is the winner.

Coach Potato's picture

....and thanks to everyone who has been part of these ones and had a bit of fun along the way.

Coach Potato's picture

I think I've worked it out if no other expert has - why the Cleary / Cartwright halves combination is working.

Cleary is 6"0 tall and 92kg
Cartwright is 6"3 and 106kg

Penrith are showing the rest where the game is heading with undoubtedly the biggest set of halves in the competition.

It's no wonder Cleary holds his own in defence as well as his ability to cop a bit of roughing up from the other team.

Compare heights and weights with Stuart and Daley who dominated 89/90.

Stuart 5"9 83kg
Daley 6"0 92kg

Our halfback is Daley size.

christine's picture

Coach thanks for coming up with the couch comp & the Olympic comp as it gave us all something else to do keep em coming & again coach thanks for your contribution to this site as well ok .

mark ashford's picture

Tiger I would rate Rocket rather highly.
He's got a good sense of humour.
Supports his team ferociously and enjoys the banter.
What more could you ask for?

mark ashford's picture

Says it all Coach. While we're at it how big is Mansour? another very strong player.

Coach Potato's picture

Mansour only 6"0 and 98kg.
There's plenty bigger wingers going round but you'd never know it.

Coach Potato's picture

If you were thinking he was bigger Mark, hope that hasn't ruined your man-crush.

mark ashford's picture

I like his beard!

mark ashford's picture

I'd like to join Christine in thanking Coach for coming up with the two extra comps. A bit of fun for all.
Congrats to Rick for winning the Olympic gold comp.
Thinker has rejected my poor attempt to unveil him....back to the drawing board.
Thinker I'll need those bank details.

The Thinker's picture

Coach,

It's an interesting theory but your team is 7th.

There are six teams higher than yours - the Raiders are the only team in that group with a big pair of halves.

The Titans are behind you by a point...and their halves are tiny (unless you count the NFL player).

The Thinker's picture

Mark
I'll contact you by email to discuss the comp prize.

Well done Rick. I'll contact you too.

All the best

Coach Potato's picture

You might forgive young Cleary, his 1st grade career is only 11 games old, and the Cleary/Cartwright pairing is only 10 games old.

Cleary's 1st grade record stands at 7 wins from 11, as well as 1 game going to Golden Point.

The Cleary/Cartwright combination record stands at 7 wins from 10 as well as the Golden Point game.

Very tough to mark them against half a season they weren't there.

Coach Potato's picture

Fast forward into the future when all you see throughout the comp are skilful ball playing forwards wearing the number 6, and everyone knows it traced back to 2016.

mark ashford's picture

Eels just keep amazing me. Nothing to play for but nearly knocked off the Raiders at home. Thought the refs didn't do the Eels any favours.
Raiders laying in the tackle time and time again.

Where has this Roosters team been all year?

Rick's picture

...............................Thank you Coach for your congrats back on the Olympic page yes looks like 8 it is after these long two weeks and I am happy to have won :)
I have enjoyed everyone's comments and what a great idea of yours Coach with these extra comps in which anyone can join really adds a bit of fun to the footy season.
Finally to Mark Ashford and Thinker a big thank you to you both ????????.

mark ashford's picture

Actually Coach I think it goes back a bit further than that when a bloke called Wally Lewis was playing.
Don't get too excited Coach, there's a way to go.

a's picture

Wie should do one for the Para omplyics to

a's picture

For the couch Como next week I can pick Warriors Tigers Knights Rabbitohs Eels or Dragons wait they are all playing each other so I have some thinking to do here

Coach Potato's picture

Yes you are right, Mark.
It traces 25 years further back to the Daley, Kenny, and the King.

That does tell though of a couple of decades gap.

fortresseagle's picture

Tiger are you telling me you know more bout footy than me I don't think so mate if u read through the posts

Rocket is fine he is untitled to his opinion.

And I enjoy your posts as well tiger .

The fortress home of the hottest cheerleaders!!!!!!!

tigerholic's picture

Hey Mark

Yes I agree with you about Rocket, its hard for me to admit but I know Rocket personally and that is why we feel that we can give each other a bit more than the norm, it has been a good year.

Even with the Tigers season hanging by a thread of Rockets oldest G-String, I look forward to the next few years as the young guns develop and mature into the games best.

Tigers will win the premiership 2018

Have a good week
