Round twenty six selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

While the Roosters were impressive winners over the Broncos not so long ago, one has to ask what's in it for them this time. They can't catch the Bunnies on the ladder and the Knights can't catch them. Theoretically they can go past the Eels into 14th place, but that's not much of a carrot. Meanwhile the Broncos could, theoretically, lose a home final with a loss. They could also, theoretically, move into fourth spot with a win. So the Broncos have a carrot and a stick. Note that the Chooks will be without three of their best back-rowers in Cordnor, Taukeiaho and Aubusson. They face an opponent with an All-Australian back row. One of those back-rowers, club captain Corey Parker, is playing what could be his last game at Suncorp. The Broncos are celebrating the game as such. That could be the biggest carrot of all.

Verdict – Broncos by 16

Result - Broncos 24 defeated Roosters 14

Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

The way I assessed the Thursday night game seems a perfectly cromulent method to assess the Friday night game too. The Bunnies are currently 13th and cannot possibly finish any lower. There is some chance they could take 12th spot, if they really want it. Do they really want it? I suppose they can say they finished the season with four straight wins. That's something. The Bulldogs will know if they can get past the Broncos before this game begins, but the results from the Panthers and Cowboys games are still to come. A loss isn't such a big issue for the Bulldogs - a Panthers v Bulldogs final is likely to end up at a neutral venue anyway (Sydney Football Stadium). A win on Friday night could be worth something though. If the Broncos or Cowboys lose they move to fifth, and if they both happened to lose they move to fourth. That's worth the effort...surely. The Dogs have lost two in a row but their opponents on those occasions (Broncos and Cowboys) are, I think, a level above the Bunnies. I also think playing the Knights can be bad for a team in the week that follows. This contest will be harder, and it will feel harder. A little bit too hard if you ask me. I give the Bulldogs next to no hope of making a grand final this season, but they can win this.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result - Rabbitohs 28 defeated Bulldogs 10

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Jubilee Oval

The team with the worst points differential in the competition takes on the team with the second worst points differential in the comp. Lucky for me I'm taking the kids to Sea World on Saturday afternoon, so I don't have to watch this piece of pooh disguised as a football game. The Dragons get to say goodbye to Ben and Benji on the weekend. The Knights can't wait to say goodbye to this whole season. If they couldn't make an effort in the Old Boys game last round what hope have they hear. Normally I don't expect the Dragons to score many points. I'm willing to make an exception.

Verdict – Dragons by 40

Result - Dragons 28 defeated Knights 26

North Queensland Cowboys vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

The Titans will approach this as a must-win game, although that isn't necessarily the case. The Tigers will have to beat the Raiders for the Titans to miss out on a finals berth. The Cowboys will know their fate by the time they take to the field on Saturday night. They can't move higher than fourth, but there is a very real chance they could drop to sixth with a loss. A win and they are rewarded with a final in Melbourne or Sydney, while a loss means they are punished with a final in Townsville. In fact, there's some chance they could end up playing the Titans again in a weeks time. Matt Scott is out and he's close to irreplaceable in that role so those that step into the breach will need to lift. Hopefully the crowd can help on that front. The Titans overall record against the Cowboys is pretty good (8 from 16) but they've never won in Townsville. Given the Cowboys record at home this season I suspect the Titans will just fall short again. But what a game...there'll be plenty of sore bodies in the days that follow this battle.

Verdict – Cowboys by 7

Result - Cowboys 32 defeated Titans 16

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – AAMI Park

The Sharks are one team with a playing style that has troubled the Storm this season. The Sharks did it in round four, and the Raiders and Broncos have, in recent weeks, proved it wasn't a fluke. The primary task is to extract the foot of Cameron Smith from the accelerator. More often than not he manages to control the speed of the game. He couldn't do that last week, and it frustrated him so much he even got marched ten metres at one stage. Line speed in defence and swift ball movements in attack are the key, and the Sharks can do that. The Sharks did that in round four, and while a 14-6 scoreline looks like a dour victory the Sharks could have won that game by much more. So I'm giving them a big hope here, and the Sharks would love to have the J.J. Giltinan shield in their empty trophy cabinet. But I can't tip them. The Storm have never lost to the Sharks in Melbourne, and they very rarely lose two games in a row at home. There's no AFL in Melbourne this weekend, and the Storm often give us their best when they are the only show in town. With so much to play for, I'll back the experienced men in purple and the experience of their coach to get them home. Again...what a game. How good is the football on Saturday night peoples? Wow!

Verdict – Storm by 1

Result - Storm 26 defeated Sharks 6

Wests Tigers vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

I can't be the only one that would love to see The Viking Clap in the first week of the finals, but it isn't going to happen. The Raiders could move into the top two with a win (if the Sharks lose), but they'll be away from home next week (Sydney or Melbourne) no matter what [Attention tipsters: the information here is not correct. The Raiders can host a final with a top two finish. See the comments for more details...apologies for the incorrect information]. The Tigers, like most of us, will be watching the Cowboys vs Titans game on Saturday night. If the Titans win, this game becomes a lot less meaningful. At this point I'm leaping to the conclusion that the Tigers can make the top eight with a win. The Tigers proved they can win without Tedesco last week and I think they can win again. Much depends on what happens before kick-off on Sunday, but right now I'm backing the Tigers in an upset.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result - Raiders 52 defeated Tigers 10

New Zealand Warriors vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Did you ever have a crazy girlfriend that was a lot of fun but so freaking unpredictable that you never had a clue what was really going on? The Warriors are my crazy girlfriend. The most frustrating team in the NRL will remain forever thus, and I'm not sure what it's going to take to change them. On Sunday they are free from any pressures or expectations and they'll probably win this game in a canter. If they do I'll look at them and I'll shake my head in dismay. Why can't you be like that every week? Why? The Eels have nothing to play for but I've been saying that for weeks. If only the Warriors could harness the discipline and effort the Eels have shown through adversity...they'd be top four at least. I'll tip the Warriors but nothing would surprise me in this game. The Eels at $2.85 are definitely backable. Warriors huh! Lucky for me I never married them.

Verdict – Warriors by 14

Result - Eels 40 defeated Warriors 18

Penrith Panthers vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday night – Pepper Stadium

The Panthers can't lose 7th spot, and by the time Sunday night rolls around they'll know if they can move any higher. Even Coach Potato wouldn't think the Panthers can move past the Cowboys, but there's a very slight chance they can move past the Broncos. Getting past the Bulldogs is slightly more likely, but even then they'll probably be playing the Bulldogs in the finals at a neutral venue anyway. There's a lot of unknowns at play right now, but what I do know right now is that this is the Panthers last game at home this season, and I expect them to perform accordingly. Don't be surprised if they jump the gates, spring to a 20 point lead and then rest some players in the second half. They do have a short turnaround into the finals compared to most. Campbell-Gillard is out for the season and he's a good one, but that Panthers bench isn't short of talent this year. As for Manly, this is a season that well and truly got away from them. They'll be getting away too. I suspect their bags are already packed.

Verdict – Panthers by 22

Result - Panthers 36 defeated Sea Eagles 6

Wally Lewis - round twenty-six selections (in bold)

Bit disappointed Mitchell Aubusson is not playing.

Wonder if the Roosters will make a play for Rein,or maybe Moses?

Morning Fortress,
Also posted in Round 25 after I finally got internet connection back.

I don't know if you backtrack and check previous round posts or not, but....
Thinker did a post at 6.41pm last night (30.8.2016).
Summer good time for a mixture of banter. BBL Cricket will be stronger as well. A-League kicks off in October and EPL is already in swing.

Being a person playing for sheep stations in Non-Tippers Comp, I may be going against Sea Eagles in last round. They couldn't do it for King at Brooky, so doubt they'll get it together out at The Grave Yard. Panthers are going well and have a lot more in reserve, that they're not showing. Reserve fuel for finals and they need to win Round 26....rain, hail or shine. Rain is predicted and I know the birdies like water.

Have a great day mate.
Big Pete

LAST MAN STANDIN’

G’day Coach (and everyone else),

Sitting here in the office and it’s pouring down over here in Perth at the moment. Well it is here in Henderson anyway. Got to thinking about my options here and jumped on and saw my friend Mark hasn’t posted yet so thought I might get on nice and early.

From basically the 2 games I have to choose from, I reckon my best chance is in the Warriors vs Eels game. Mark reckons “the Eels going OK” and he’s right. Then again, last normal season game at home for the Warriors and thinking they might wanna go out on a win. Which way to turn? Sheesh …

Coach, can you put me down for the Warriors please. In the tie-breaker game, can I jump onto the Dragons. Sorry Mark but got no choice. Good luck with your main pick brother.

Thanks again Coach for running this and win or lose, I had a ball.

P.S. If you don’t pay your exorcist, do you get repossessed? Hmmm …

mark ashford's picture

Coach. Think I understand. Can I take Roosters as main pick then Knights as back up.
It had to come to this at some stage.
Good luck Newbie.

newbie from perth's picture

@ Mark Ashford

First off, apologies for getting in early and grabbing the Dragons in the tie-breaker.

Second, you’ve picked my Beautiful Boys to beat yours? Really? I would’ve thought you had a better chance going with the Bunnies. My (possibly) flawed logic:

Roosters to beat the Broncos – might be a bit of an ask.
Tigers to beat the Raiders – ditto.
Souths to beat the Doggies – not totally out of the question I would have thought.

Not being privy to all the latest news and gossip about the ins’n’outs in NRL happenings/clubs etc might have me thinking along the wrong lines but still … I am “Newbie” after all.

Anyhoo brother, good luck to you too and for the Roosters vs Broncos Blockbuster this week. Cheers.

P.S. Why is the word "abbreviation" so long? Hmmm …

Here are my Tips

Broncos by 10 I think Broncos are going to finish in 5th here

Bulldogs by 4 I think Dogs will come in finals strong here

Dragons by 12 I think Dragons will finish up a season with a win

Cowboys by 8 I think Cowboys will finish in the top 4 here

Storm by 6 I think Storm will finish in 3rd here

Raiders by 4 I think Raiders will finish 2nd and end Tigers season

Warriors by 6 I think Warriors will finish up with a win

Panthers by 10 I think Panthers are going to finish with 5 wins in a row here

That means the finals will mean

September 9th game
Broncos vs Titans

September 10 evening game
Storm vs Cowboys

September 10 Night Game
Raiders vs Sharks

September 11th game
Bulldogs vs Panthers

You must think they just might?

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Broncos by 18- The Broncos to finish off the season with a big win over the Roosters which based on my other tips, puts Broncos to finishing 5th.

Rabbitohs by 7- I think that the Rabbitohs will upset the Bulldogs here which makes them finishing 12th and bulldogs finishing 7th based on my other tips.

Dragons by 26- If we lose this one, it'll be a disgrace to this great club. For me, the hopes for the Knights in this one is Nathan Brown's side coming up with the win against his former club that he both played and coached, and also Nathan Ross back for the Knights who has been one of the Knights' best this season. Otherwise, I can't see why we can't beat the Knights in this one. We will do it for Ben Creagh and Benji Marshall in convincing fashion. And plus, we have a magnificent record against the Knights and finally, we are playing at home at UOW Jubilee Oval which means that based on my other tips, we'll finish 11th and the Knights will of course finish the wooden spooners.

Cowboys by 8- Cowboys to beat the Titans here. Which'll mean that the Cowboys will finish at 4th and the Titans will finish 8th based on my other tips.

Storm by 2- The Storm to secure the minor premiership here in an absolute thriller.

Raiders by 8- The Raiders to end the Tigers season here. Which'll put them at 2nd and the Tigers at 9th.

Warriors by 4- Warriors to just beat the Eels in a close one.

And finally... Panthers by 14- The panthers to finish this season with a big win at home.

Awesome. That's done. Good luck with everyone's teams this week and with everyone's teams this week for that may be there final time playing this season. And just to finish off, congratulations to Big Pete for definitely getting the win in the non tipsters ladder this season, it ended up being us to this season lol. Well deserved, especially considering yiou came later on in the season than I did. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

It’s the last round of the regular season and it all starts with my Beautiful Boys up against the Broncos. Sheesh, talk about getting thrown in at the deep end. Oh well, better to get it over and done with early. The sooner they finish the sooner they can head off somewhere for a holiday. Just hope history doesn’t repeat itself and some of the boys actually behave themselves this time. I reckon the Roosters should ban all phones when they travel to wherever they’re going to. Then again, stupid behaviour doesn’t rely on someone having a phone to “capture the moment” does it? Please, please don’t post anything on Facebook boys! Anyway, enough of that, let’s get stuck into the tips for this, the last regular weekend of games. Finals footy fast approaching … Woo-Hoo!

Broncos - with this being at Suncorp, what they did last week and some of our players MIA, it’s painful to admit but it’s all pointing to an easy win at home for the Broncos Thursday night. I’ll be in front of the telly tomorrow night and just hope we don’t get done by too much. Maybe the Broncos will only go ¾ pace to save themselves for the finals. Yeah, right. Ouch!

Rabbitohs - gee, haven’t Souths improved of late. Gee, haven’t the Doggies been “average” of late. Basing my extensive form study of this clash purely on those first two statements, who the hell can I trust? Will the Bunnies somehow lose the great vein of form they’re in at the moment or will the Doggies somehow bounce back? As an avid punter on the Sport of Kings (horses), I tend to lean on the theory of good current form wins a lot of races so I’ll have to go the Rabbitohs here.

Dragons - both these mobs are pretty awful at the moment but the Dragons are much better than the poor ol’ Knights. Plus they’re farewelling whats-his-name (BM) and they’re playing at Kogarah. Dragons to win this but really hope the Knights give ‘em a scare.

Cowboys - this might be real close and everything to play for. I admire the Titans hardness but not Greg Bird. This is at 1300 and JT’s a champion. Good enough for me. Ride ‘em Cowboys! Yee-Hah!

Storm - the Sharks hadn’t won in a month but then they smashed the Roosters. I must admit my Beautiful Boys are not in the same class as the Storm so I’m not reading too much in the Sharks' big win last week. The Storm however, lost to a red hot Brisbane outfit and will definitely not want to drop another one and miss out on the silverware. Nah, Storm Troopers for me, especially at home with the crowd right behind them.

Raiders - the Green Machine just keep on ticking the boxes. Hard to see them dropping this one and missing out on possibly finishing second on the ladder. The juggernaut to continue I reckon.

Warriors - both these teams have had a somewhat disappointing year. Warriors with their form and Baggy’s BOYS with the penalties handed down from those on high. Nothing to play for really. Even though they have some outs, I reckon the Warriors might just sneak in here at home. Not really confident but I’ll give the Warriors one last chance.

Panthers - the Panthers will absolutely smack Manly this week. Looked up some stats and I see that since round 11, the Panthers are ranked second in attack and Manly have conceded 38 and 44 in their last two games. Plus they’ve lost their last four. Should, in theory, be a no-brainer here. Penrith for me.

For those interested in the Boss’ use of the word “cromulent” in his assessment of the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs game, this is what it means:

“Cromulent” is an adjective that was coined by David X. Cohen. The meaning of “cromulent” is inferred only from its usage, which indicates that it is a positive attribute. Dictionary.com defines it as meaning fine or acceptable.

So, there you have it. So endeth tonight’s lesson…

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points!

P.S. Can cannibals be arrested for drunk-driving if they’ve eaten someone who was drunk? Hmmm…

2013 Bronco's coach - Made September
2014 Bronco's coach - Made September
2015 Gap year - Noone wanted you
2016 Panther's coach - Made September

At the Broncos, success was demanded. Making the semis not good enough. Everyone knows of course, there has been no addition to the trophy cabinet since they sacked you.

Now that you are a Panther, better get used to anything you or your team achieves insultingly referred to, by so-called experts, as over-achievement. 100% September record but you wouldn't make the top 10 in coach ranks.

Sounds like you're with the right team now.
Better to be at the place where you can prove people wrong.

The Thinker's picture

Morning Coach,
There must be 20000 jokes on the interwebs about the Sharks having an empty trophy cabinet, and less than half of those jokes are mine.

And they actually have a trophy....they won an AMCO Cup in the 1970's.

The jokes are still funny though.

As for the current Panthers coach...he's a top bloke and a very good footy coach...although the Broncos didn't make the finals in 2013. In his first year as coach the Broncos were 3rd, in his next three years 8th, 12th and 8th.

In his last three years with the Broncos they lost more games than they won.

That doesn't make him a bad coach though....he's actually a good fit for the Panthers because he's great with the younger kids coming through the system.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Your right coach 2016 is a remarkable achievement by hook.

mark ashford's picture

Internet is playing up so comments will be sporadic.
Coach I don't think Roosters will beat the Broncs.
You had to set the final pics as you did, so no problem.
Cheers all good luck to your teams.

Jack Starky's picture

Sorry thinker if the Raiders finish top two they would host a finals match at GIO Stadium in week one and you would get your Viking clap.

If they win this match they would have a week off and move into the preliminary final in week three of the finals series. This game would be played in Sydney at either ANZ or Allianz Stadium.

If they lose in week one they would host another home final in week two of the finals series.

The Thinker's picture

Morning Jack

I hope you are right. Happy to be wrong on that one.

The Thinker's picture

Looks like you are right Jack. My mistake. Preliminary finals are in Sydney unless the teams that have earned home advantage are the Storm, Cowboys, Broncos or Titans....I think. My head hurts.

That certainly gives the Raiders much more to play for...if the Sharks lose.

Sbee's picture

Why would it be a reward for Cowboys to play a final in Sydney or Melbourne and a punishment to get a Final in Townsville? That doesn't make any sense to me...

The Thinker's picture

Sbee,
You are right..it doesn't seem like much of a reward.

What the Cowboys really want is to finish top four, and then knock off the top team in the first week of the finals.

If they do that, they get a week off, and (unless I'm wrong again) they then get to host a preliminary final in Townsville. That's the real reward.

He's Made September every year as a coach.

Cmon. It made the stat look better without lying.
You should be proud of me.

I realise all coaches made it to September in 2013.
But add the other 3 legitimate finals appearances and it's not a bad record for a guy who's call up at the Broncos was the equivalent to the naming of Peter Taylor in the Australian cricket team. He proved his worth in time also.

I think the omen hanging over the Sharks this year is that they are not celebrating their 50th. Whether it's just generations of bad math teachers in the Shore, who knows.

Not wanting to celebrate, to me though, is an omen that they won't be celebrating come year's end.

Panthers on the other hand are celebrating the 50th, and equally I take that as an omen for season's end.

The Thinker's picture

It was a fair effort Coach...but I've sent it to the bunker for review and they can't possibly award you a try for that. :-)

I'll be online for much of the game tonight....if anyone feels like arguing with me about anything
