Round twenty six selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

While the Roosters were impressive winners over the Broncos not so long ago, one has to ask what's in it for them this time. They can't catch the Bunnies on the ladder and the Knights can't catch them. Theoretically they can go past the Eels into 14th place, but that's not much of a carrot. Meanwhile the Broncos could, theoretically, lose a home final with a loss. They could also, theoretically, move into fourth spot with a win. So the Broncos have a carrot and a stick. Note that the Chooks will be without three of their best back-rowers in Cordnor, Taukeiaho and Aubusson. They face an opponent with an All-Australian back row. One of those back-rowers, club captain Corey Parker, is playing what could be his last game at Suncorp. The Broncos are celebrating the game as such. That could be the biggest carrot of all.

Verdict – Broncos by 16

Result - Broncos 24 defeated Roosters 14

Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

The way I assessed the Thursday night game seems a perfectly cromulent method to assess the Friday night game too. The Bunnies are currently 13th and cannot possibly finish any lower. There is some chance they could take 12th spot, if they really want it. Do they really want it? I suppose they can say they finished the season with four straight wins. That's something. The Bulldogs will know if they can get past the Broncos before this game begins, but the results from the Panthers and Cowboys games are still to come. A loss isn't such a big issue for the Bulldogs - a Panthers v Bulldogs final is likely to end up at a neutral venue anyway (Sydney Football Stadium). A win on Friday night could be worth something though. If the Broncos or Cowboys lose they move to fifth, and if they both happened to lose they move to fourth. That's worth the effort...surely. The Dogs have lost two in a row but their opponents on those occasions (Broncos and Cowboys) are, I think, a level above the Bunnies. I also think playing the Knights can be bad for a team in the week that follows. This contest will be harder, and it will feel harder. A little bit too hard if you ask me. I give the Bulldogs next to no hope of making a grand final this season, but they can win this.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result - Rabbitohs 28 defeated Bulldogs 10

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Jubilee Oval

The team with the worst points differential in the competition takes on the team with the second worst points differential in the comp. Lucky for me I'm taking the kids to Sea World on Saturday afternoon, so I don't have to watch this piece of pooh disguised as a football game. The Dragons get to say goodbye to Ben and Benji on the weekend. The Knights can't wait to say goodbye to this whole season. If they couldn't make an effort in the Old Boys game last round what hope have they hear. Normally I don't expect the Dragons to score many points. I'm willing to make an exception.

Verdict – Dragons by 40

Result - Dragons 28 defeated Knights 26

North Queensland Cowboys vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

The Titans will approach this as a must-win game, although that isn't necessarily the case. The Tigers will have to beat the Raiders for the Titans to miss out on a finals berth. The Cowboys will know their fate by the time they take to the field on Saturday night. They can't move higher than fourth, but there is a very real chance they could drop to sixth with a loss. A win and they are rewarded with a final in Melbourne or Sydney, while a loss means they are punished with a final in Townsville. In fact, there's some chance they could end up playing the Titans again in a weeks time. Matt Scott is out and he's close to irreplaceable in that role so those that step into the breach will need to lift. Hopefully the crowd can help on that front. The Titans overall record against the Cowboys is pretty good (8 from 16) but they've never won in Townsville. Given the Cowboys record at home this season I suspect the Titans will just fall short again. But what a game...there'll be plenty of sore bodies in the days that follow this battle.

Verdict – Cowboys by 7

Result - Cowboys 32 defeated Titans 16

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – AAMI Park

The Sharks are one team with a playing style that has troubled the Storm this season. The Sharks did it in round four, and the Raiders and Broncos have, in recent weeks, proved it wasn't a fluke. The primary task is to extract the foot of Cameron Smith from the accelerator. More often than not he manages to control the speed of the game. He couldn't do that last week, and it frustrated him so much he even got marched ten metres at one stage. Line speed in defence and swift ball movements in attack are the key, and the Sharks can do that. The Sharks did that in round four, and while a 14-6 scoreline looks like a dour victory the Sharks could have won that game by much more. So I'm giving them a big hope here, and the Sharks would love to have the J.J. Giltinan shield in their empty trophy cabinet. But I can't tip them. The Storm have never lost to the Sharks in Melbourne, and they very rarely lose two games in a row at home. There's no AFL in Melbourne this weekend, and the Storm often give us their best when they are the only show in town. With so much to play for, I'll back the experienced men in purple and the experience of their coach to get them home. Again...what a game. How good is the football on Saturday night peoples? Wow!

Verdict – Storm by 1

Result - Storm 26 defeated Sharks 6

Wests Tigers vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

I can't be the only one that would love to see The Viking Clap in the first week of the finals, but it isn't going to happen. The Raiders could move into the top two with a win (if the Sharks lose), but they'll be away from home next week (Sydney or Melbourne) no matter what [Attention tipsters: the information here is not correct. The Raiders can host a final with a top two finish. See the comments for more details...apologies for the incorrect information]. The Tigers, like most of us, will be watching the Cowboys vs Titans game on Saturday night. If the Titans win, this game becomes a lot less meaningful. At this point I'm leaping to the conclusion that the Tigers can make the top eight with a win. The Tigers proved they can win without Tedesco last week and I think they can win again. Much depends on what happens before kick-off on Sunday, but right now I'm backing the Tigers in an upset.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result - Raiders 52 defeated Tigers 10

New Zealand Warriors vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Did you ever have a crazy girlfriend that was a lot of fun but so freaking unpredictable that you never had a clue what was really going on? The Warriors are my crazy girlfriend. The most frustrating team in the NRL will remain forever thus, and I'm not sure what it's going to take to change them. On Sunday they are free from any pressures or expectations and they'll probably win this game in a canter. If they do I'll look at them and I'll shake my head in dismay. Why can't you be like that every week? Why? The Eels have nothing to play for but I've been saying that for weeks. If only the Warriors could harness the discipline and effort the Eels have shown through adversity...they'd be top four at least. I'll tip the Warriors but nothing would surprise me in this game. The Eels at $2.85 are definitely backable. Warriors huh! Lucky for me I never married them.

Verdict – Warriors by 14

Result - Eels 40 defeated Warriors 18

Penrith Panthers vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday night – Pepper Stadium

The Panthers can't lose 7th spot, and by the time Sunday night rolls around they'll know if they can move any higher. Even Coach Potato wouldn't think the Panthers can move past the Cowboys, but there's a very slight chance they can move past the Broncos. Getting past the Bulldogs is slightly more likely, but even then they'll probably be playing the Bulldogs in the finals at a neutral venue anyway. There's a lot of unknowns at play right now, but what I do know right now is that this is the Panthers last game at home this season, and I expect them to perform accordingly. Don't be surprised if they jump the gates, spring to a 20 point lead and then rest some players in the second half. They do have a short turnaround into the finals compared to most. Campbell-Gillard is out for the season and he's a good one, but that Panthers bench isn't short of talent this year. As for Manly, this is a season that well and truly got away from them. They'll be getting away too. I suspect their bags are already packed.

Verdict – Panthers by 22

Result - Panthers 36 defeated Sea Eagles 6

Wally Lewis - round twenty-six selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • BRONCOS vs Roosters
  • BULLDOGS vs Rabbitohs
  • DRAGONS vs Knights
  • COWBOYS vs Titans
  • STORM vs Sharks
  • Tigers vs RAIDERS
  • WARRIORS vs Eels
  • PANTHERS vs Sea Eagles

Yes that game did take 120 minutes or so.

Oh no. Did you hear James Graham post match? Joey asked what he thought the 3 straight losses could be put down to. He basically said he didn't know, and then said ....... "It is what it is". I can only echo the sentiment.

doggie's picture

big pete, my days in burraga were limited to a few school holidays when I was about 12 to 14 yrs old. my uncle was a classic pitt street farmer. lawyer looking for a tax break. great times for me and my brother though.

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening Doggie - yes Bulldogs will need to lift themselves after tonights swim in the park. Love that chip pinchers bit - but I think that is more seagulls than eagles but nevertheless, they are found near beaches.
So you got your singing repertoire from Marty did you. I work with a Robins but only one B.
I know Crow Hawkins. I recall Ross Gibson came from Lithgow Shamrocks didnt he. I knew a Jenny Arnold from Oberon as well.
I know a Peter Cosgrove who lives here in Bathurst now. But then I knew Cosgroves from Bathurst days and they moved out to Oberon.
Yvonne was around my age and I think they were at Shooters Hill.
Johnny Adams - what cub did he play with to play for Australia.
Pouring rain here and floods predicted. Looks like being overnight rain and most of weekend.
Keep well and we'll chat again.

The Theories Series
-------------------------

Theory #1 - That the top four teams after round 5 consistently make the finals, and the bottom 4 after round 5 consistently ...don't.

So let's jump into the Delorian and fly back in time some 21 weeks...back.....back..wayyy.....back...

Submitted by Coach Potato on Mon, 04/04/2016 - 8:26pm

Counting chickens half an hour early, but the way things are, after round 5

The top 4 is
---------------
Broncos
Storm
RAIDERS
Cowboys

Can you believe it? Raiders 90% chance of playing semis.

Bottom 4
-----––----
Manly
Dragons
Knights
Roosters

15% chance of playing semis.

So the Round 5 theory.
100% correct a mundo.
That's all the synopsis you need.

And so concludes Part I ...... of the Theories...Series.

doggie's picture

genius coach.......where's your tab ticket

Coach Potato's picture

Hey I don't think money gained needs to be the proof of the theory.

As for reminiscing. glad you enjoy it doggie, bdcause after next week that's all you'll have.

Not about theories, about retribution.

Would be a perfect reminder for the current team if Panthers finish 6th and get to play away again.

The Thinker's picture

Well done with the theory Coach.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Doggie - the theory turned out well for Coach.
He did extra well.

His new name for The Finals is Einstein Potato - eyes everywhere.

@Coach - top effort there mate.

Keep well all - have a very nice Fathers Day tomorrow.
Whether u r or yr not - I'm sure you've been a father in some way or another.

High tide hasn't washed you away has it mate.

Sent you one last night, but either you've changed your ISP or you've got a filter on, or something has changed that Thinker hasn't been informed of, so he can update his database of member details.

Cheers - Big Pete from a very windy Bx

...........................................Hi Thinker speaking of emails, I sent you a different one to perhaps try a few days back ?

fortresseagle's picture

Tough game Sunday they will give it there best shot.

Mark ashord and rocket your mob starting to warm up very good win over chooks came back strong and now aim to win the title going to be tough but bennett will have them primed .

Hope the sharks win tonight should be very close .

The cowboys and raiders should also win close matches .

Chat soon big Pete will keep in touch.

Fortress eagle in da house!!!!!!!!

christine's picture

If the raiders win & do manage to secure a home ground final I would love to see that viking clap it would be the pinnacle for me .

Rocket Ryan's picture

The mind boggles to me the viking clap would sound like something most vikings hoped to avoid.

christine's picture

You obviously didn't see the viking clap .

christine's picture

Thinker do you have any footage of the viking clap from that particular raiders game in ? & if so can we see it pls .

Tailspin's picture

I'm pissed, I think the bloody Knights were robbed.

tigerholic's picture

Hey Rocket

Did you ever get over the CLAP that you had in Thailand????

Coach Potato's picture

You're right Tailspin. Knights dudded. Plenty at stake that game. Newcastle get up and it could have been a Broncos beanie heading North. How ironic that the game trialling the Captain's challenge, offered nothing to challenge apart from the last play where Dragons got a penalty for dropping the ball. Something that can't be challenged.

Alas, the Knights went down one last time, and that means a Roosters beanie is heading West.

Regardless of the Warriors game now, Newbie is ...

The Last One On The Couch.

a's picture

Cowboys are in the top 4 yes

BigPeteBx's picture

Fortress - do get that address fast. I sent you one to yours, but it appears that the address who have given, has failed.

Been out with my crew tonight as well. Tomorrow is different as daughter works....so Fathers Day isn't really together. Loved the couple of Hahn Super Dry's I had.

I'm sure the boys wont get walked or worked over out at The Graveyard.
Broncos are quiet sleepers mate. Never know what they will pull.

Yes, we'll keep in touch.

Cheers - Big Pete

newbie from perth's picture

G’day Coach,

Just back in from visiting some friends and decided to check up on the scores and lo and behold, I see the Dragons got up, albeit by 2 points. I’m too much of a tight you-know-what to shell out for Foxtel and GEM don’t show any games on Saturdays. Only get Thursday night, Friday night and Sunday arvo games. So instead of watching the Dragons & Sharks, we get that great classic drama/romance movie from 1952 entitled “The Quiet Man” starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. Mind you, I seem to remember that it wasn’t such a bad a movie anyway. Showing my age now peeps!

So, not getting to watch the Dragons and Knights, I can’t comment on the Knights getting robbed/dudded. I might go off and have a look out there in the great ethernet and try and find some highlights or something.

Big, big thanks for putting up the beanie Coach. Bronco supporter colleague at work reckons the Roosters are “giving them away for free” after our effort this year so it may not cost you anything in the end. Geez, the pressure would have been on had those Knights actually got up eh? Interesting to see the eventual outcome in the Warriors game.

OK, gotta skedaddle now but before I go, a big ‘thank you” to everyone who got involved in the “last one standing” and to Mark and “a” for changing their picks 2 weeks ago. Appreciate it fellas. Thanks again Coach, you da man! Cheers.

P.S. Boss, should I drop you or TLH an address (to pass on to Coach) where this precious piece of cutting edge fashion apparel can be sent to?

P.P.S. Happy Fathers Day tomorrow to all you dads out there. To all you sons, do the right thing and go see ya old man, even if it’s only for 20 minutes or pick up the phone and give him a call. Like mine, you’ll miss him when he’s gone! Word!

A friend who knows the true identity of Newbie just sent me a text and pointed out there was a slight error in my previous post last night. Indeed there was. I should have said “to all you sons and daughters”. I was actually thinking “children” but wrote “sons” instead. To all those wonderful daughters out there, my unreserved apologies. But hey, you don’t have time to be sitting down reading this, you have someone to call or visit eh?

Happy Fathers Day to all you dads! Peace!

mark ashford's picture

Hi Guys
Still no internet (damn Telstra) at my bros for fathers day.
Happy days to all the dads!
No internet/no fox only seeing free to air.
Comments will be sporadic for a while.
Congrats to Newbie winning Coach's comp.

BigPeteBx's picture

Morning Mark - Happy Dads Day to you Mark and all out there.

I will always use Telstra, even though yes, they have their comms issues. The other providers just use their lines/mains etc. I wont use Optus cheaper or not.
Excuse the French, pricks of things sold an unknown low life shit a SIM card under my daughters name, as he hacked her identity from her mobile phone number. Eventually got into her bank account and got a large sum, but thankfully, so far we don't think he's got the funds she was awarded for her Uni scholarships. Optus don't seem to want to get involved and keep passing her off to the next. So I've said "get something done about it or we go to the Telecommunications Ombudsman".

I believe 4 Corners did a segment on their show last week about computer hacking. I did a NSW JP's Identity Theft Course a few years ago and anything is possible and capable of these days.

We are in a world of greed, hunger and litigation folks. Beware!!!!!

Well done Newbie on your recent win. I know a fellow who is a mad Roosters supporter and lives in a suburb called Pinjarra over there in WA.

Cheers and keep well all - Big Pete

christine's picture

Good on ya newbie well done mate for winning coach's comp .

The Thinker's picture

Greetings everyone,

For those of you with accounts (and in tipping competitions) can I ask that you add an up to date email address to your profile on this site?

It's only so I can touch base with people and give out prizes. You won't be spammed by anyone (unless you just post your email address straight into the comments page - if you do that you'll be spammed by everyone).

If you aren't sure how to check that your email address is valid. Sign in on this site, then click on your user name at the top right of the screen where it says 'Hello The Thinker' or 'Hello Newbie from Perth'.

Once you've clicked that, click the edit button, then you'll see the email address we have for you. If that address is fine, you don't have to do a thing. If it isn't just add an email address that you use.

No spamming from me...I promise.

All the best

Ive done it

Baggy_Gee's picture

Interesting stat ATM, all the points from the Raiders have come from players with a first name starting with J. Tim grant ruins it for the "all points" coming from a player starting with J.

Great way to finish the year Tigers, EMBARASSING

My finals prediction times are

Friday Night
Broncos vs Titans

Saturday Afternoon
Storm vs Cowboys

Saturday night
Raiders vs Sharks

Sunday afternoon
Panthers vs Bulldogs

newbie from perth's picture

Thanks for the congrats Mark, BIG Pete and Christine. You’ve made me feel all warm and fuzzy. Cheers.

@ BIG Pete – mate, great to know there’s an aquaintance of yours who supports the Mighty Roosters. Just so you know, I wouldn’t class Pinjarra as a “suburb” of Perth. I’m old enough to remember going on Sunday drives to the “country” and Pinjarra would be on the way. Mind you, it’s only about 90 clicks from Perth so maybe it will be a suburb in the true sense of the word one day. The rate at which Perth is spreading out, it’ll be sooner rather than later!

OK, gotta go as the Warriors and Eels game is just about to start (just gone 2pm here in WA) and I need to make myself a cappuccino and settle down on the couch. Cheers…

P.S. Just saw the score tigerholic. Don’t despair brother. Keep the faith. Every “success” has to be paid for by some “pain”. Trust in your boys to come good again…

Coach Potato's picture

If the Panthers can get passed the Dogs they face the loser of Raiders Sharks to get into a prelim. Both games week 1 and 2 could be in Sydney.

25/1 hey?

mark ashford's picture

YooHoo looks like my Telstra Turbo stick has finally woken up and I'm back in business.
Big "HI" to all the tipsters out there, apologies for my absence.
Coach thanks for the comp glad our most distant tipster won it.
If "a"s prediction is right happy to play the Titans in week one.
How could Ennis escape that shoulder charge?
Nothing to do with it being his last regular game in the NRL.

mark ashford's picture

Coach you've gotta get past Manly first.

Coach Potato's picture

No we don't . Nothing will change win or lose. Panthers will be in two minds, keep up the momentum or save yourself for next week. Whatever happens today won't mean much either way. There's nothing to gain.

Coach Potato's picture

How close that the Last One comp went to Golden Point effectively, and coming down to the tie-breaker Dragons v Knights and that dud call.

Coach Potato's picture

Titans finish 8th on 27 and Parra show they would have made it on 28

Coach Potato's picture

Conflict over use of ANZ by Swans and GWS has pushed the Bulldogs Pamthers game back to next Sunday. Why not then allow Penrith to play at home FFS?

mark ashford's picture

Coach being off air I missed some results.
Yes you meet the Dogs and the Broncs meet the Titans.
Pray for no injuries in the Manly game tonight.
My Broncs will find you out no matter when.

mark ashford's picture

Coach, the finals look good for QLD teams.
How about that you NSW droolers.
3QLD teams and a VIC team in the final 8
SOO QLD 9 NSW 1
Say what you want fools, you wont beat us.

mark ashford's picture

Looks like the Panthers are flogging the Sea Eagles.
Some ridiculous score at half time.
Coach you may be right that your team has a real shot this year.
Just try and avoid the Broncs on the way through.

Coach Potato's picture

Sounding like you're doin your best to make a hypocrite of yourself, Mark.

Thinker, got anything to say about the Panthers tonight? I trust you will be fair in your assessment once more.

Coach Potato's picture

100/1 Tailspin. Hope you had more than $2 on.

The Thinker's picture

I didn't watch the game Coach. From the final result it looks like they performed as most of us expected to.

Did they rest players in the second half like I suggested they might?
I see they did most of their scoring early.

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans

I've updated the NRL ladder for the final time. Congratulations to the Melbourne Storm on the minor premiership - the team that keeps on keeping on.

And a big viking clap for the Raiders - not a lot of people had you in the top eight and you've finished second. Wow.

Rick rejoins Footy Chick in the lead in our tipping comp with 7 from 8. Chooks and SeaEagle47 were the others with 7 this week.

I'll have the week one finals page published as soon as possible and my previews and selections will be published by lunchtime on Wednesday.

All the best

Coach Potato's picture

Peachey had stints off through the second half and Wallace stayed off after 53 minutes.

I trust you will see the next match.

Coach Potato's picture

Sorry Finals Fans I said I would launch the Finals Tipping Comp tonight but don't think it's fair as most would have tuned out til next week's preview page is open.

Will start it off then.
That sounds like Tuesday or Wednesday.
