Round twenty three selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

Manly are two wins adrift of four other teams vying for finals spots, and in their last four games they face top eight teams playing well. Coach Trent Barrett all but conceded that their campaign this year was over...and it is. Once the coach has given up, the players have every excuse in the world to give up too (unless they're desperately seeking a new contract). Jamie Lyon returns and they'll lift for his testimonial game at Brookvale, but that selection is for another day. The Dogs are talking. Woof! Woof!

Verdict – Bulldogs by 10

Result - Bulldogs 20 defeated Sea Eagles 16

Brisbane Broncos vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

When last they met it was the very first game of the season, when the Broncos prevailed (17-4) at Pirtek. Foran was a late withdrawal before the game, and Norman got injured before half time and never returned. Since then the season has only gotten worse for them both. While the Eels last start victory over the Sea Eagles showed they haven't given up completely, they had their share of luck to get there. The 50-50 calls are less likely to go their way away from home. Abolutely no-one should be backing the Broncos to win this game at $1.22, but they are the team to tip. There were positive signs last round, and those that have written them off this season should note that the Sharks lost, the Cowboys lost, the Storm scraped home at home and the Bulldogs had their share of challenges getting over the Knights. Broncos...not finished just yet.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result - Broncos 38 defeated Eels 16

Wests Tigers vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – Campbelltown Stadium

Critics of Jarryd Hayne and his return on the Gold Coast take note - he's good for business. The Titans loss to the Warriors last week was the highest rating show on Foxtel ever - not bad for an expansion club and a team from New Zealand. I'm not sure how many of those 396,000+ will be glued to televisions on Saturday, but it's worth a look. Robbie Farah was probably wrong when he said he was at least as good as Cameron Smith, and Jason Taylor was probably right when he said the Tigers were a better team without him. They've won three games on the trot, and every win has been convincing. Given their last start win over the Cowboys, you would expect these young Tigers will be starting to believe that they deserve to be playing finals football this year. This season might be one season too early, but it's great to see a young side giving it a shake. If Hayne was rusty in his first game back then his best will be very good indeed. I'll assume he improves this week, and I'll assume the Titans are a more cohesive unit this week too. Will that be enough to beat an in-form Tigers in daytime conditions at home? Not quite.

Verdict – Tigers by 2

Result - Titans 19 defeated Tigers 18

New Zealand Warriors vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – Mt Smart Stadium

Every season the Warriors get on a run, and this season their run has arrived later than it usually does. I blame climate change. I'm not sure what's causing the steady decline at South Sydney but this once mighty side has lost nine games in a row. Yes they put up a fight against the Storm last week, but I'm declaring that performance a one-off. Prior to that they got beaten by 50, and teams that get beaten by 50 often bounce back next start. Bounce is what they did, and now it's time they bounced back down again. The Warriors have beaten two top eight contenders in a row, and any losses in recent times have been in extra time. You can never say the Warriors are a certainty, but I feel like saying it.

Verdict – Warriors by 14

Result - Rabbitohs 41 defeated Warriors 22

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – UOW Jubilee Stadium

Somewhere out there is a planet whose inhabitants believe the Dragons can win on Saturday night, but it's not this planet. Perhaps it's where Johnny Ray went - there were times when he did seem like he was from another world. I've felt for a while that the Sharks peaked too early this season, and their last two performances may indicate that to be true, but they're better than the Dragons. They're so much better than the Dragons. If the Sharks went into this game assuming the two points were already theirs, I could give the Dragons a slight hope, but given the Sharks comprehensive loss last start, that won't be the case. Joel Thompson, Tyson (you can't tough this) Frizell and Josh Dugan return for the Red V, but I doubt it matters. I think the Sharks win by 30, and I can't believe the bookies have them at $1.25. I like that...gamble responsibly.

Verdict – Sharks by 30

Result - Dragons 32 defeated Sharks 18

Newcastle Knights vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

The Knights have an old boys game up their sleeves, but this isn't it. It's not even next week when Jarryd Hayne heads to the Hunter. The Panthers are level with two other teams on the ladder but ahead on points differential. This game gives them an opportunity to stretch that lead further, and that differential could be very important indeed when we call time on the last game in round 26. Hook knows it, and he has a team capable of racking up a score. $1.17 for the Panthers. I actually like that more than the Sharks at $1.25.

Verdict – Panthers by 34

Result - Panthers 42 defeated Knights 6

Sydney Roosters vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

If there is a crazy result this round (and nearly every round has one) then this game could be the game. The Roosters barely tried last week, and its very likely they're too busy getting their end of season holidays organised to be worried about winning football games. If that is the case this game is over already, but it's possible the Chooks can find a reason to win this. That reason - to finish ahead of the Rabbitohs on the ladder this season. That's all I've got. Pearce and Waerea-Hargreaves return for the tricolours, and the Cowboys are without Granville in that all important role. His absence may slow the Cowboys down in attack just enough. We are the Roosters...the red white and bluesters.

Verdict – Roosters by 2

Result - Roosters 22 defeated Cowboys 10

Canberra Raiders vs Melbourne Storm – Monday night – GIO Stadium

Josh Hodgson isn't better than Cameron Smith, but he's a lot better than Robbie Farah, and he might be the best English rugby league player in the world right now (I know...that's a small world, but still). There's every chance they'll be vying for the Dally M this year (unless Ben Barba or Jason Taumalomo get in the way). The Raiders proved (to many) they're a contender this season with their win over the Sharks. Now they get a chance to back up that impressive left jab with a stunning right hook by knocking off the team on the top of the ladder for the second week in a row. A win for the Storm and they maintain their lead over the Sharks - a loss and they probably drop to second. A win for the Raiders and they stay in third - a loss and they probably drop to fourth. It's an important game and it's the game of the round, so who do you want on your side in those clutch moments? Answer: Cameron Smith.

Verdict – Storm by 1

Result - Raiders 22 defeated Storm 8

Wally Lewis - round twenty-three selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • BULLDOGS vs Sea Eagles
  • BRONCOS vs Eels
  • TIGERS vs Titans
  • WARRIORS vs Rabbitohs
  • Dragons vs SHARKS
  • Knights vs PANTHERS
  • Roosters vs COWBOYS
  • Raiders vs STORM

Te Maire Martin.
2nd week in NSW cup.
This week will be 3rd. Still not named.
What are we bloody waiting for?

Oh yeah. Your old team the Tigers are visiting Penrith next week.
I see. Show them exactly what they said goodbye to.

Nice one.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Cotton wool wrapped for the start of next year Coach? He still is a nipper really.

So my tips this week.

Bulldogs - One team is nearly dead duck, the other is pushing to stay in the 4. Should be only one result, Judas being back is like Gallen being back for the Sharks. Good Talisman, but a ball magnet that sometimes gets in the way. Dogs by a lap (maybe 2).

Eels - Finally the round has come, I'll be there Friday night ready to watch the BOYS do us proud and take it to the Bronco's up in Vegas. We can hold the line as we have proven this year and we'll have to. I see the Bronco's struggling later this campaign, but if the BOYS start and stay strong we can start that slump now.

Titans - Not sure about their 5/8, might vanish as there is a spot on the women's track cycling team after this mornings crash. But apart from that the Titan's are closing out the season well. A loss to the Warriors nearly doesn't count as they are either to hot to handle or luke warm. The Tigers are the same, but a wonderful win over the Cowboys might take it out of them.

Warriors - Get the Bunnies at home, they would be licking their lips at the thought. A bit of momentum back in the team, a team that should be competing better than they are. Warriors to go 2/2.

Sharks - Finally the loss that they needed. With a air of fragility about the team after the streak has been broken, should refocus them and sharpen them up. A great game to hone an attack as well as improve their defence to hold the Dragons to nil.

Panthers - Everything except the last 10 minutes finally came together for the Panthers. This is good because the Knights are starting to get some starch into their game and will be better for the close loss last week to the Dogs. Closer than people might think, but Panthers

Cowboys - I want as I always do to back the not Cowboys, but like the Sharks, a loss to an unlikely team will get them fired up. The Roosters haven't been able to string much together this year, good win over the Bronco's, a loss of nearly the same to the Panthers. A next time Gadget, next time, season for the Roosters.

Raiders - The Raiders have been putting good points on teams and the Storm have been winning. I'm backing the points to win this game, Should be nice to watch the Raiders take it to the Storm and get up for a fine win.

Coach Potato's picture

Baggy, he"s two years and one month older than Cleary.
How o!d does he require to be?

Coach Potato's picture

Trying to view things outside myself just impossible when I say what a dynamite Grand Final was 91 - Panthers v Canberra.

The prospect of a 3rd Grand Final, with another 18 year again leading them. Dreams of Dynamite.

Coach Potato's picture

Not even in the finals yet.
A long way ahead of myself.

Coach Potato's picture

Manly need to win 8 in a row to win the comp, six of those away.
Four straight to make the 8, then four straight finals.

A bridge too far? You would have to think so, but for one more week, I think they can keep the candle flickering. Tom Trbojevic holds the key. Beating a player one on one, slipping a ball away. Things that Hasler's men can't be coached to defend. I see that as the difference.

Manly will get to say next week they need 7 from 7, and get to ask again whether that is a bridge too far.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Dynamite dreams that have a habit of blowing up coachy boy interesting that you have elevated cleary and martin into the top line of halfs long way to go yet plenty of young halfs look the goods early only to succumb to the weight of expectation i have only to put the tigers pair up as an example

mark ashford's picture

Here are my tips

Bulldogs by 6 I think Bulldogs are going to win and end Manly's season

Broncos by 12 I think Broncos are going to win easy

Titans by 1 thats was a 50/50 for me I think Titans are going to win in a thriller

Warriors by 8 I think Warriors are going to win and continue Rabbitohs misery

Sharks by 10 I think Sharks are going to win against Dragons

Panthers by 14 I think Panthers are going to continue Knights horror run

Cowboys by 6 They will find form against the Roosters

Raiders by 2 I think Raiders can beat anyone and will beat Storm here

And Coach please put me down for Panthers this week

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Man, these Thursday night starts are starting to do my head in! Newbie’s safe world of “routine” has taken a hammering lately. Is it Wednesday or Thursday? Why am I “late night shopping” on a Friday? Oops, sorry, it’s actually Thursday. Well not tonight it’s not but it will be tomorrow (I think). Sheesh, I reckon I should just get into it and try and improve on last week’s embarrassing tipping effort. Let’s go peeps…

Bulldogs - the Doggies should have just a wee bit more class you would think. Manly had a win over here (only just) in atrocious conditions, beat the Bunnies and the Knights (sorry to those fans out there but not exactly great opposition) and then lost to the Eels. Not good enough formlines for me. I’ll go the Dogs.

Eels - yeah, I know I place a lot of importance on the Broncos playing at Suncorp but I’m goin’ crazy this week and tipping Baggy’s BOYS to get up here.

Titans - the Tigers have been pretty good lately (especially last week) but methinks the Titans might burst their bubble this week. Jarryd gets his second run and things might just start working a little better. The Titans will want to atone for last week’s loss and maybe the Tigers are due for a bad one, who knows? Titans for me.

Warriors - have no idea what either the Bunnies or the Storm were doing last week but I do know both sides were “out of character” so to speak. Can’t see the Bunnies repeating last week’s form against a pretty good Warriors outfit at Mt Smart. Warriors for me here. Peow! Peow!

Sharks - will the Sharkies bounce back from last week? Of course they will. While they were a chance, the Dragons couldn’t get up against the Broncos last week (when I reckon they should have) so I don’t think they can get up over the Sharks.

Panthers - the Panthers were pretty good against my Beautiful Boys last week (or were we crap?) and the poor ol’ Knights should, in theory, get done here. They had a crack in the second half last week against the Dogs so they might not be a “pushover” in this one. The Panthers need to be wary here but I’ll stick with them to get the job done.

Roosters - I’m gonna go freakin’ crazy again and tip my Beautiful Boys to cause an upset (sorry “a”). Good to see the Boss has also gone crazy. Why am I tipping my boys? What have I based my decision on? Purely and solely on the fact that we have Pearce and JWH back. Not much of an argument I know but still. I’ll be an absolute legend (and the Boss too) if it comes off so maybe I’ll just sit and hope. Begurk! Begurk!

Storm - this would have to be the best match up this weekend in Newbie’s book. Raiders knocked off the league leaders while the “new” league leaders got one hell of a scare. Don’t underestimate those Raiders. The form they’re in at the moment suggests this will be an exciting game (hopefully). When in doubt, keep with the proven class. Stormers for me.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points!

P.S. Do butterflies remember life as a caterpillar? Hmmm…

LAST ONE ON THE COUCH
I’ve just realised I’ve picked the same as our friend “a” every single week. Promise I’m not copying you “a”. It’s just how it’s turned out bud. Great minds think alike? Anyway, Coach, I think I might go your boys this week. Can you put me down for the Panthers please. Thanks mate…

Cheers

fortresseagle's picture

But lose this week end tigerhollic and the finals could be a hard road to climb,

In my opionion jason Taylor is a disgrace never was a good player isn't really a good coach. The tigers very talented team he might think he is vindicated by there recent form but it's not his coaching that has them winning, nor is it that Robbie farah isn't there it's the players themselves lifting because Robbie would of spoken to them and told them to get the job done. The players have the upmost love and respect for Robbie only they can do nothing about it and jason Taylor has gagged them, I would say if any player spoke up against Taylor he too would get the axe so shutting up is there only choice meaning that Taylor is a coaches equivalent of adolph hitler only not as good looking.

That's my opinion..........

Great game on offer tonight our season on the line after matt checcine the dog disgracefully have his team parramatta the sympathetic and pathetic victory.

The boys will give the dogs a run for there money but what a future and talent we have won't be long before we are lifting that trophy again ..............

Proud of you boys never give up go for it the mighty sea eagles !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doggie's picture

Hey fortress, i asked before but got no answer. Is turbo tom a local? Is he available for NSW cause i think hes the next GI.

Go you mighty sea eagles!!!!!!!6

fortresseagle's picture

Keep your hands off him he is nsw through and through.

St.George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Hello everyone my tips for this week are:

Bulldogs by 7- Alright, alright, the Bulldogs haven't been convincing side, but yes they are a definite top 8 side but are they a top 4 side? I'm not convinced that they are. But, I think that the Bulldogs will steamroll over the Manly pack and also show some of their great attack as well. In what this match is considered as a "grudge match".

Broncos by 4- The Broncos to get the win. They have been disappointed in recent times. Only just edged out the mighty Dragons in the wet last Thursday night. They'll only just beat the Eels this week who have been resilient for pretty much the whole season and it'll continue that way for the Eels but they won't come away with the win here.

Tigers by 8- The Tigers beat the Cowboys last week without Brooks last week. Littlejohn done a great job containing Thurston last week. And although the Titans have Hayne playing in the starting line-up at five-eighth playing in the West of Sydney where he grew up. The Tigers to get the win over the Titans. Just to say, Hayne played very well last week considering that he hadn't played for two and a half years. He showed off some of his Gridiron skills as well last week under the high ball. But the Tigers to continue their run.

Warriors by 4- warriors to just get the win here. The warriors have plenty to play for whilst the Rabbitohs don't. I think that desperation of wanting to make the finals will be the winner here. And that team for this game is the Warriors.

Yes... the Dragons to upset the Sharks by 6- Yes, yes, yes. The Dragons to absolutely shock, surprise and upset the Sharks here. We get Dugan, Frizell and Thompson back for this one. We have got together our best line-up here since about just say round 16 or round 17. This is a local derby where form doesn't matter. A packed house at UOW Jubilee Oval. The Dragons to get a tight, yet surprising win here. This may sound surprising, but I think that we'll actually score some points in this one.

Panthers by 22- Look the Knights have really been trying over the last few weeks. They haven't been blown off the park by 50 points at all in the last few weeks. Which is a good sign for them. But they'll get a big loss here against an inform panthers side who do have plenty to play for and will put on a clinic here.

Cowboys by 10- The Cowboys got blown away last week. They'll bounce back here against the Roosters, who have been really disappointing this season coming 15th with only 4 wins.

And finally... the Raiders by 4- Not sure if Austin is playing for the Raiders in this one. He's named but not certain to play. My tip in this one is the Raiders in a close one on Monday night to keep their streak going whereas the Storm to get a rare loss this season here. It'll be only their 4th loss this season here.

Awesome. That's done. Good luck to everyone's teams this week. I really hope that the Dragons muscle up especially in attack to get a win. Also good luck with everyone's tips. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

St.George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Soryry, the Bulldogs haven't benen a convincing side ov er the last few weeks.

St.George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Look for the Dragons, no matter how we win, the main thing is that we win. But it would be really good for Dragons to get a wig win here which they obviously won't. It'll be a tight win for us I think.

St.George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Big*
