Round twenty three selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

Manly are two wins adrift of four other teams vying for finals spots, and in their last four games they face top eight teams playing well. Coach Trent Barrett all but conceded that their campaign this year was over...and it is. Once the coach has given up, the players have every excuse in the world to give up too (unless they're desperately seeking a new contract). Jamie Lyon returns and they'll lift for his testimonial game at Brookvale, but that selection is for another day. The Dogs are talking. Woof! Woof!

Verdict – Bulldogs by 10

Result - Bulldogs 20 defeated Sea Eagles 16

Brisbane Broncos vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

When last they met it was the very first game of the season, when the Broncos prevailed (17-4) at Pirtek. Foran was a late withdrawal before the game, and Norman got injured before half time and never returned. Since then the season has only gotten worse for them both. While the Eels last start victory over the Sea Eagles showed they haven't given up completely, they had their share of luck to get there. The 50-50 calls are less likely to go their way away from home. Abolutely no-one should be backing the Broncos to win this game at $1.22, but they are the team to tip. There were positive signs last round, and those that have written them off this season should note that the Sharks lost, the Cowboys lost, the Storm scraped home at home and the Bulldogs had their share of challenges getting over the Knights. Broncos...not finished just yet.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result - Broncos 38 defeated Eels 16

Wests Tigers vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – Campbelltown Stadium

Critics of Jarryd Hayne and his return on the Gold Coast take note - he's good for business. The Titans loss to the Warriors last week was the highest rating show on Foxtel ever - not bad for an expansion club and a team from New Zealand. I'm not sure how many of those 396,000+ will be glued to televisions on Saturday, but it's worth a look. Robbie Farah was probably wrong when he said he was at least as good as Cameron Smith, and Jason Taylor was probably right when he said the Tigers were a better team without him. They've won three games on the trot, and every win has been convincing. Given their last start win over the Cowboys, you would expect these young Tigers will be starting to believe that they deserve to be playing finals football this year. This season might be one season too early, but it's great to see a young side giving it a shake. If Hayne was rusty in his first game back then his best will be very good indeed. I'll assume he improves this week, and I'll assume the Titans are a more cohesive unit this week too. Will that be enough to beat an in-form Tigers in daytime conditions at home? Not quite.

Verdict – Tigers by 2

Result - Titans 19 defeated Tigers 18

New Zealand Warriors vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – Mt Smart Stadium

Every season the Warriors get on a run, and this season their run has arrived later than it usually does. I blame climate change. I'm not sure what's causing the steady decline at South Sydney but this once mighty side has lost nine games in a row. Yes they put up a fight against the Storm last week, but I'm declaring that performance a one-off. Prior to that they got beaten by 50, and teams that get beaten by 50 often bounce back next start. Bounce is what they did, and now it's time they bounced back down again. The Warriors have beaten two top eight contenders in a row, and any losses in recent times have been in extra time. You can never say the Warriors are a certainty, but I feel like saying it.

Verdict – Warriors by 14

Result - Rabbitohs 41 defeated Warriors 22

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – UOW Jubilee Stadium

Somewhere out there is a planet whose inhabitants believe the Dragons can win on Saturday night, but it's not this planet. Perhaps it's where Johnny Ray went - there were times when he did seem like he was from another world. I've felt for a while that the Sharks peaked too early this season, and their last two performances may indicate that to be true, but they're better than the Dragons. They're so much better than the Dragons. If the Sharks went into this game assuming the two points were already theirs, I could give the Dragons a slight hope, but given the Sharks comprehensive loss last start, that won't be the case. Joel Thompson, Tyson (you can't tough this) Frizell and Josh Dugan return for the Red V, but I doubt it matters. I think the Sharks win by 30, and I can't believe the bookies have them at $1.25. I like that...gamble responsibly.

Verdict – Sharks by 30

Result - Dragons 32 defeated Sharks 18

Newcastle Knights vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

The Knights have an old boys game up their sleeves, but this isn't it. It's not even next week when Jarryd Hayne heads to the Hunter. The Panthers are level with two other teams on the ladder but ahead on points differential. This game gives them an opportunity to stretch that lead further, and that differential could be very important indeed when we call time on the last game in round 26. Hook knows it, and he has a team capable of racking up a score. $1.17 for the Panthers. I actually like that more than the Sharks at $1.25.

Verdict – Panthers by 34

Result - Panthers 42 defeated Knights 6

Sydney Roosters vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

If there is a crazy result this round (and nearly every round has one) then this game could be the game. The Roosters barely tried last week, and its very likely they're too busy getting their end of season holidays organised to be worried about winning football games. If that is the case this game is over already, but it's possible the Chooks can find a reason to win this. That reason - to finish ahead of the Rabbitohs on the ladder this season. That's all I've got. Pearce and Waerea-Hargreaves return for the tricolours, and the Cowboys are without Granville in that all important role. His absence may slow the Cowboys down in attack just enough. We are the Roosters...the red white and bluesters.

Verdict – Roosters by 2

Result - Roosters 22 defeated Cowboys 10

Canberra Raiders vs Melbourne Storm – Monday night – GIO Stadium

Josh Hodgson isn't better than Cameron Smith, but he's a lot better than Robbie Farah, and he might be the best English rugby league player in the world right now (I know...that's a small world, but still). There's every chance they'll be vying for the Dally M this year (unless Ben Barba or Jason Taumalomo get in the way). The Raiders proved (to many) they're a contender this season with their win over the Sharks. Now they get a chance to back up that impressive left jab with a stunning right hook by knocking off the team on the top of the ladder for the second week in a row. A win for the Storm and they maintain their lead over the Sharks - a loss and they probably drop to second. A win for the Raiders and they stay in third - a loss and they probably drop to fourth. It's an important game and it's the game of the round, so who do you want on your side in those clutch moments? Answer: Cameron Smith.

Verdict – Storm by 1

Result - Raiders 22 defeated Storm 8

Wally Lewis - round twenty-three selections (in bold)

Streak Tables won't change much after tomorrow.
Canberra with a win will reconfirm it's between 4 teams.
If Canberra lose however, they need to win their last three to get to 12. Basically means their season depends on winning Monday night.
Win and they are true contenders. Lose and they may just lose the contender tag.

Broncos would move to 10 and into top4 contention with a win next week. A game that suddenly takes on huge significance.

Cowboys can't miss the finals with 28 (surely), but they drop out of the top8 streak table with another loss next week.

1 STORM 16 0
2 SHARKS 15 2
3 BULLDOGS 12 2
4 RAIDERS 11 4
5 BRONCOS 9 7
6 EELS 8 5
7 COWBOYS 7 3
8 TIGERS 7 6
9 TITANS 7 7
10 WARRIORS 7 7
11 DRAGONS 6 6
12 PANTHERS 6 6
13 SEA EAGLES 6 11
14 RABBITOHS 4 15
15 ROOSTERS 0 13
16 KNIGHTS 0 19

Looks like I am going to have to think about what to do in the comp next week

Tailspin's picture

I thought Cowboys were absolutely shit today, and last week, piss poor defence, heaps of errors and JT has lost the plot, They played like there was a bit of match fixing going on. Very disappointing to watch.

a's picture

We will beat the Warriors next week

Tailspin's picture

I bloody hope so a, but they had want to start playing to achieve another win.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Dynamite dreams of the coach pototo again well done coach took a while to get over a team that can't even spell win back to pepper next week and the Dynamite dreams continue.

Coach Potato's picture

Olympic intermission to say what a laugh.

Qld teams never get beat. They only play badly.
Calling his own team a bunch of crooks as the only explanation.
Weakness of character shining bright.
How appropriate that name Tailspin is now.

Steel Panther's picture

Tailspin & a....despite how poorly the Cowboys were yesterday they were no where near as poor as the Warriors were on Saturday night. I was at the game and for a team clinging to a top 8 spot to dish that sort of performance up was a disgrace but certainly not a surprise. Nothing like a game against the Warriors to play your team back into form.

I can't see the top 8 changing now.....

tigerholic's picture

Gidday Tailspin

As good as JT is, what was the go with him questioning the ref like he was, he stopped playing whilst he remonstrated with the ref, he looked a lot like the grub Cameron Smith.

At least you know the Cowboys have the players to bounce back.

a's picture

Paul Gallen is the worst but

tigerholic's picture

Morning Coach

I am going to go out on a limb and say the Tigers will give the Panthers a run for their money on Friday night. Luke Brooks will be back and we might even trot Robbie Farah out, Tigers to march back into the top 8 with a win at Pepper Stadium.

mark ashford's picture

Coach I think you're being a bit tough on our mate Tailspin.
The Roosters played their best game this year and the Cows didn't.
Was a throw away line about the match fixing from a disappointed fan.

Tiger there doesn't seem to be a lot of Storm fans on his site so I'll defend Cam Smith. He's no grub mate. Questions refs in a respectful manner as do most captains. Want to see grubs have a look at James Graham and Paul Gallen.

tigerholic's picture

Mark

Fair comment, JT lowered his standard yesterday.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Tiger
Yeah how can you predict this season.
Roosters/Rabbits playing like busted arses and suddenly start knocking off top teams.
Broncos early GF favourites struggling to win a game.
Panthers, Tigers, Eels consistent (forget the cap) and now here come the Titans.
Sharks stumbling, Raiders & Storm firing.
Cowboys who knows. As with Warriors & Sea Eagles.
Bulldogs a worry. Dragons struggling.
Only consistent team this year the Knights.
Hope I didn't miss anyone!

mark ashford's picture

Tiger
Just heard on the radio that Robbie has definitely done a deal with the Rabbits for next year.
If true, I hope it's right. Good for the Rabbits and good for Robbie.
Will stop the Taylor/Farrah dispute so good for the Tiges too.

a's picture

Yeah Gallen Graham and Ennis also question the ref

mark ashford's picture

"a" and Tailspin.
Don't worry too much about your Cowboys.
JT not himself on the weekend, still getting over that hammy.
Warriors at home this weekend should see you back on track.

a's picture

You right we will get back on track

Tailspin's picture

Don't worry, guys, the marsh mellow coach is only looking for a bite, and he wont get it from me. Qld teams do get beat coach all the time, I bet you would still bag Qld players even when Australia is playing, you have issues. And I didn't call my team crooks, I said that's what it looks like. No weakness here mate, we will see by end of season where the teams sit and then we will see who's is the weakest. You bag every QLD team, so I'm not surprised by your comment. Maybe its a flu the Broncos had that is spreading through QLD, watch out Titans, you could be next.

Coach Potato's picture

Wow Tailspin, you did so extra well not to bite back!??

Shi, I thought only one Wally visited the page this week.

Tailspin's picture

Ouch coach stop it, it hurts sooo bad

mark ashford's picture

Ryan James is going to Sydney to contest his offense.
I've watched the tackle many times and James goes in with a swinging arm.
Why not just tackle the guy with two arms. Same result, Tedesco is tackled, but doesn't end up with a broken jaw.
Why swing the arm in? James meant to hurt Tedesco.
What does this do to the Tigers hopes of playing finals.
Just how hard must you hit a bloke with your forearm to break his jaw in two places?
Shame on the judiciary if they let this go.

mark ashford's picture

Jesus Coach if your Panthers have a stumble you are gunna cop it big time.
Hope you've got thick skin!

Tailspin's picture

Marsh mellow has gone all quiet mark, you must have scared him off.

Coach Potato's picture

Give it up, Butt-Rotater.
You can't win.
The more you say, the worse you look.
Your team lost.
Try saying something sensible, else keep playing the fool.
The choice is yours.
Losers, after all, can please themselves.

tigerholic's picture

Hey Coach

That last comment of yours was actually very funny, I didn't get it the first time I read it and then it him me "Butt-Rotater" funny.

Canberra played excellent footy tonight, so glad I tipped them. They have to be considered real contenders from this point on, what do you all think?

Ryan James fighting the charge for his high shot on my man Tedesco, he has just taken over from Cameron Smith as the games number one grub.

christine's picture

I know I put a bet on sharks to win the grand final but I would really like to see Canberra take it all the way .

mark ashford's picture

OH Coach better hope your Pennies beat the Tiges.
The Cowboys sit so far ahead of you in every respect.
Cows 28 - Panthers 26
5th spot Panthers 7th spot
For and against 138 in front
Not to mention the Broncs
6th spot Panthers 7th
For and against 51 points in front.
The Broncos have a good chance of beating the Dogs as have the Cowboys of getting over the Warriors.
I'd just worry about an inform Tigers Coach if I was you instead of throwing shit.

mark ashford's picture

Tigerholic/alcoholic your continual attacks on our Australian Captain are becoming boring and show your poor judgement, perhaps low iq and complete lack of sense.

mark ashford's picture

Tigerholic.
Yes the Coach's barb was hilarious, nothing less than what I'd expect from Mr Potato Head.
Not surprised it took you a while to get it.

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans. I've updated the tipping comp and the NRL ladder - after a round of upsets the only change in the NRL top eight was the 9th placed Titans swapping places with the 8th placed Warriors.

In a tough round for tipsters the best score by any of us was 5 from 8, although quite a lot of you managed to do just that.

I'll have the round 24 tipping page published tomorrow night, and I'll have my previews and tips published by lunchtime on Wednesday.

Coach Potato's picture

For and against is one thing, but if Panthers can keep doing what they're doing, they finish on 32 - and the question about who finishes the hhigher simply becomes will Broncos and/or Cowboys finish on 32 or more as well?

Easier said than done but Panthers could go to the finals on the back of 5 straight wins, and iif Golden Point in NZ happens to go the other way, 8 straight. A team on that kind of streak will happily play anyone, anywhere, anytime.

a's picture

Cowboys will win next week

The Thinker's picture

Potato Man may be getting a little ahead of himself at the moment - in the last fortnight his team has beaten the teams running 15th and 16th. At the same time the Raiders have beaten the teams running 1st and 2nd.

Prior to beating the Knights and Roosters, the Panthers lost to a team that might sneak into the top eight, they beat a top eight side in an appalling form slump and got flogged by the Sharks when they had five Origin players unavailable.

I expect them to make the finals...then it gets harder.

tigerholic's picture

Mark

You only defend Cameron Smith because he is a Queenslander, did you watch the game last night, his tactics every week are the same as his persona, grubby.

Have a great day

tigerholic's picture

Rocket Ryan

Where are you, I would have thought that with your ponies on the comeback trail you would be all over this site.

Steel Panther's picture

If Keiran Foran is serious about fixing his mental health he won't sign for the Warriors.......

Doggie's picture

Everyone seems to be writing of the dogs. Although i agree they are not winning convincingly they are still winning. Cowboys have lost a couple in a row, Sharks haven't won for three weeks, Storm lost last night, Broncos get first win for over a month. I think Dogs are a playmaker short to be a real threat but you cant discount Hasler or the Dogs in finals footy.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Ah Cam Smith, I love Ricky for calling Cam and the Storm on the rubbish tactics that they brought into the game with giving penalties away on the line. But also love how when it doesn't suit the Storm, they have a cry. Here's to Cam Smith, Grub #1 in a game that contains Josh Renyolds, Michael Ennis, and Sam Thaiday.

tigerholic's picture

Good call Baggy, watch out for Mark Ashford, he gets a little touchy when Cam Smith is named as a Grub.

I agree 100%

a's picture

Here is the updated ladder for the people in the non tipping competition

BigPeteBx 106

Islander 101

Dragonsfan4ever 100

That puts BigPeteBx up by 5 but still anyones game

Coach Potato's picture

Blah blah blah.

However far the Panthers make it this year, they are destined to, at the hands of teams that lost through playing badly.
The most informed rugby league commentators on this page refuse to buckle and this is all you will get.
Not here to argue. If that's how it has to be, so be it.
Like King Bennett says, it is what it is.

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
You're playing the Tigers this weekend. The last time you played the Tigers you lost, and this is what your coach had to say:
"Our worst game this year".
"We invited them into the game".
"We're better than that".

Translation - the Tigers won because we played poorly.

When the Panthers lost to the Warriors:

"Our guys didn't execute right".
"We turned the ball over 3 times in Golden Point".

Translation - the Warriors won because we played poorly.

Coaches say it all the time. Often its true.

The Panthers are playing well at the right time of the season and they deserve to make the finals, but here's the thing.

This year they've played sides currently in the top eight on ten occasions. They've lost seven. Of the three they won, two were by a single point, and the other was the big win over the Broncos.

The Raiders are the only side in the top five they played twice during the regular season. They played the Sharks once...and lost. They played the Storm once...and lost. They played the Bulldogs once...and lost. They played the Cowboys once...and lost.

Now I know you'll say they were competitive in all those games...and they were....but they still lost, and you can't lose in the finals and win the premiership.

They are going well...but they have to lift. If you want to call that an unfair criticism that's up to you. I call it an observation. I have no reason to have a skewed view of how the Panthers are going...but you do.

tigerholic's picture

Bammm, God dammm, take that Coach. The thinker has come out and gone for the knockout in the first 30-40 punches.

Well said Thinker, that post took some thought and perhaps a little frustration and pent up holding back, reminds me of the footy in the 80's, no holds barred,

Coach, if the Tigers beat the Panthers this Friday night, I should get a wild card entry back into the Couch cop, what do you reckon.

Coach Potato's picture

Well I do see games won by, say less than 6, as virtual golden point games themselves. Tight games that could have gone our way without batting eyelids too heavily. Wins against Broncos and Raiders, plus them close ones against Sharks , Dogs, and Cowboys.

Consider Panthers mindset if they were to travel to Townsville , only going down by 5 last time , compared to the higher placed Dogs mindset of reversing a 36-0 result.

Noone has to win all the lead up races to the Melbourne Cup, they just have to show they are capable of matching it. Whether they do or not, I'm mighty happy to currently have a sense they are truly capable without having to come up with porky pies and fairytales.

Coach Potato's picture

Not sure what we need to do to lift?

Maybe we needed to beat Broncos by 30+ not just 19,, Roosters by 40+ not just 20, and Knights by 82+ not just 36.

Pick it up Panthers. Noones impressed.
