Round twenty three selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

Manly are two wins adrift of four other teams vying for finals spots, and in their last four games they face top eight teams playing well. Coach Trent Barrett all but conceded that their campaign this year was over...and it is. Once the coach has given up, the players have every excuse in the world to give up too (unless they're desperately seeking a new contract). Jamie Lyon returns and they'll lift for his testimonial game at Brookvale, but that selection is for another day. The Dogs are talking. Woof! Woof!

Verdict – Bulldogs by 10

Result - Bulldogs 20 defeated Sea Eagles 16

Brisbane Broncos vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

When last they met it was the very first game of the season, when the Broncos prevailed (17-4) at Pirtek. Foran was a late withdrawal before the game, and Norman got injured before half time and never returned. Since then the season has only gotten worse for them both. While the Eels last start victory over the Sea Eagles showed they haven't given up completely, they had their share of luck to get there. The 50-50 calls are less likely to go their way away from home. Abolutely no-one should be backing the Broncos to win this game at $1.22, but they are the team to tip. There were positive signs last round, and those that have written them off this season should note that the Sharks lost, the Cowboys lost, the Storm scraped home at home and the Bulldogs had their share of challenges getting over the Knights. Broncos...not finished just yet.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result - Broncos 38 defeated Eels 16

Wests Tigers vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – Campbelltown Stadium

Critics of Jarryd Hayne and his return on the Gold Coast take note - he's good for business. The Titans loss to the Warriors last week was the highest rating show on Foxtel ever - not bad for an expansion club and a team from New Zealand. I'm not sure how many of those 396,000+ will be glued to televisions on Saturday, but it's worth a look. Robbie Farah was probably wrong when he said he was at least as good as Cameron Smith, and Jason Taylor was probably right when he said the Tigers were a better team without him. They've won three games on the trot, and every win has been convincing. Given their last start win over the Cowboys, you would expect these young Tigers will be starting to believe that they deserve to be playing finals football this year. This season might be one season too early, but it's great to see a young side giving it a shake. If Hayne was rusty in his first game back then his best will be very good indeed. I'll assume he improves this week, and I'll assume the Titans are a more cohesive unit this week too. Will that be enough to beat an in-form Tigers in daytime conditions at home? Not quite.

Verdict – Tigers by 2

Result - Titans 19 defeated Tigers 18

New Zealand Warriors vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – Mt Smart Stadium

Every season the Warriors get on a run, and this season their run has arrived later than it usually does. I blame climate change. I'm not sure what's causing the steady decline at South Sydney but this once mighty side has lost nine games in a row. Yes they put up a fight against the Storm last week, but I'm declaring that performance a one-off. Prior to that they got beaten by 50, and teams that get beaten by 50 often bounce back next start. Bounce is what they did, and now it's time they bounced back down again. The Warriors have beaten two top eight contenders in a row, and any losses in recent times have been in extra time. You can never say the Warriors are a certainty, but I feel like saying it.

Verdict – Warriors by 14

Result - Rabbitohs 41 defeated Warriors 22

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – UOW Jubilee Stadium

Somewhere out there is a planet whose inhabitants believe the Dragons can win on Saturday night, but it's not this planet. Perhaps it's where Johnny Ray went - there were times when he did seem like he was from another world. I've felt for a while that the Sharks peaked too early this season, and their last two performances may indicate that to be true, but they're better than the Dragons. They're so much better than the Dragons. If the Sharks went into this game assuming the two points were already theirs, I could give the Dragons a slight hope, but given the Sharks comprehensive loss last start, that won't be the case. Joel Thompson, Tyson (you can't tough this) Frizell and Josh Dugan return for the Red V, but I doubt it matters. I think the Sharks win by 30, and I can't believe the bookies have them at $1.25. I like that...gamble responsibly.

Verdict – Sharks by 30

Result - Dragons 32 defeated Sharks 18

Newcastle Knights vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

The Knights have an old boys game up their sleeves, but this isn't it. It's not even next week when Jarryd Hayne heads to the Hunter. The Panthers are level with two other teams on the ladder but ahead on points differential. This game gives them an opportunity to stretch that lead further, and that differential could be very important indeed when we call time on the last game in round 26. Hook knows it, and he has a team capable of racking up a score. $1.17 for the Panthers. I actually like that more than the Sharks at $1.25.

Verdict – Panthers by 34

Result - Panthers 42 defeated Knights 6

Sydney Roosters vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

If there is a crazy result this round (and nearly every round has one) then this game could be the game. The Roosters barely tried last week, and its very likely they're too busy getting their end of season holidays organised to be worried about winning football games. If that is the case this game is over already, but it's possible the Chooks can find a reason to win this. That reason - to finish ahead of the Rabbitohs on the ladder this season. That's all I've got. Pearce and Waerea-Hargreaves return for the tricolours, and the Cowboys are without Granville in that all important role. His absence may slow the Cowboys down in attack just enough. We are the Roosters...the red white and bluesters.

Verdict – Roosters by 2

Result - Roosters 22 defeated Cowboys 10

Canberra Raiders vs Melbourne Storm – Monday night – GIO Stadium

Josh Hodgson isn't better than Cameron Smith, but he's a lot better than Robbie Farah, and he might be the best English rugby league player in the world right now (I know...that's a small world, but still). There's every chance they'll be vying for the Dally M this year (unless Ben Barba or Jason Taumalomo get in the way). The Raiders proved (to many) they're a contender this season with their win over the Sharks. Now they get a chance to back up that impressive left jab with a stunning right hook by knocking off the team on the top of the ladder for the second week in a row. A win for the Storm and they maintain their lead over the Sharks - a loss and they probably drop to second. A win for the Raiders and they stay in third - a loss and they probably drop to fourth. It's an important game and it's the game of the round, so who do you want on your side in those clutch moments? Answer: Cameron Smith.

Verdict – Storm by 1

Result - Raiders 22 defeated Storm 8

Wally Lewis - round twenty-three selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • BULLDOGS vs Sea Eagles
  • BRONCOS vs Eels
  • TIGERS vs Titans
  • WARRIORS vs Rabbitohs
  • Dragons vs SHARKS
  • Knights vs PANTHERS

The Thinker's picture

The Hasler interview after this game will be interesting if the dogs lose.

a's picture

It is impossible to kick a field in extra time

mark ashford's picture

Manly unlucky. Gotta get rid of golden point. Players offside on both teams. All over the ruck. Refs too scared to blow penalties. It's become a joke.
Dogs won't make the finals.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Agree it is a joke bad luck brooky boys

Rocket Ryan's picture

Fortress what did you think they gave all they had.

Coach Potato's picture

Cmon Broncos, ya just having a Grand Final size whingey-poo.

But the solution clearly is Golden Try.
Meaning, you're not allowed to take field goals or penalty goals in the extra time. Only a Try wins it. Either that happens, or it staya draw.
Penalties can still get blown and it's not all over.

I know it's the answer.

Tailspin's picture

Sorry peoples, forgot to let you know what I picked,
Dogs by 4, wow how good was that :)
Broncos by 10

fortresseagle's picture

they gave it there all in the end we just fell short we were the better team.i know you shoudnt say that when u lose but evans missed the field goals by inches.forget the refs no use we all know there pathetic.

but rocket it was a close dramitic match and we now look to finish on a winning note with the finals out of reach.

the future looks very bright with tom turbo and his bro emerging as future greats, hope we get a 5/8 to partner cherry-evans who knows buit im proud of them for never giving up .

hate golden point BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good luck everyone to your teams in the finals hope the refs dont decise the outcomes and the better team takes glory should be very interesting dont know who will take the title.

as the finals near we can all then make our predictions anyone who makes the toop 8 is in with a chance it just comes down to who plays better on the day.............................

going to drown my sorrows by hopefully watching the aussies win more gold so with that nite to everyone.

back at the fortress next week to take onn the raiders playing for pride then king lyons final brooky game vs the storm will be packed out .

well done the mighty eagles love you for ever the fortress home of the great manly warringah sea eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tailspin's picture

I friggin hate golden point during normal games, its bullshit. It absolutely spoils a good game of footy, should be 1 point each and a draw. It only came in when QLD kept winning the origin on a draw, NSW - freddy fitler cried that hard that they got rid of it and brought in the golden point rule. If that's not a true statement please enlighten me.

Coach Potato's picture

Timing checks out. Golden point started in 03 and Origin decider 02 finished 18-18. Whether that's what it was about - not sure but it must have been one of the points raised.

NSW won for three years after, so a Golden Origin might have made it a run of four.

Here's the thing.
NSW win 03 , 04, 05 and then there's a kid they call GI and he's about to be picked to play for NSW.

Not bloody fair the Cane Toads cry, so something gets fixed to prop up the damn competition. So much so, it reverses the trend for a decade.

Hope you are all just a little bit enlightened now.

Coach Potato's picture

Not sure if I get it.

Panthers would rather keep Te Maire Martin in NSW Cup than play him against the metal-less Knights. Wouldn't it be the perfect time , still a few weeks before finals? You gonna bring him back on finals Eve??

Ahh. I see Panthers.
Playin' p-p-p-pokerface.
Play him the last 20 minutes in NSW Cup on Saturday.
Take him on the bus to Newcastle on Sunday.
Name him when you get there.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Maybe he is in the form that the tigers saw you also wanted cartright to play origin this year a little impatient for success are we coach.

Doggie's picture

Morning all. Were the dogs lucky. Yes. Did manly blow their chances. Yes. Should never have got to golden point. Lyon missed an easy penalty that the ref gave to square up from last week. Great game though.

Coach Potato's picture

Too forward thinking.
Try telling anyone that Cartwright doesn't get a NSW jumper.

Try telling anyone within a year that Nathan Cleary and Te Maire Martin also aren't playing rep footy in some way.

Coach Potato's picture

You got your own problems Rocket.
Last bit starts with Day
First bit sounds a lot like Fry.

a's picture

I think they should do what there doing in the finals just do the full 10 minutes of goldern point

Baggy_Gee's picture

No I think he's doing a Stirling job at the broncos. Looking forward to seeing him in fine form tonight.

mark ashford's picture

Tailspin you are 100% correct my friend.
QLD won I think 2 origin series that were drawn only because they were the previous winners.
A bit unfair you might say (if you are a NSW supporter) should have been recorded as a drawn series.
Coach is dreaming again about Inglis and conspiracies but I refuse to go there.
If Broncs don't win tonight then they may as well start planning "mad Monday"
Forwards, Hunt and Milford need to step up or it's goodnight Irene.
Anyway golden point was introduced to try and stop it happening again.

mark ashford's picture

Last two lines of my previous should have appeared after "drawn series"

Coach Potato's picture

You are right Mark.
Only to draws in Origin, both deciders in 99 and 02.
The fact that rules say the previous winner retains the trophy, let's not blur the lines - this doesn't mean as a default that Qld won those series. They will always go down as drawn series.

Things were dead even. Split down the middle. Not to be decided by rubbish extra time. Everyone shook hands after those games and was happy. Amazing that the two times there was not a struck match between the States, are the very games that are judged to be no good to anyone.

Rocket Ryan's picture

On my way to suncorp we will flog those roarters fortress dont you worry have got your parra gear on baggy or are you sneaking in the back door.

Coach Potato's picture

Love Rockets pre game pep compared to his afters.

Tailspin's picture

Thanks mark, and I'm pretty sure that wanker Gus Gould had a hand in it too.

Tailspin's picture

Have you got anything to add on the subject Thinker, or even King Wally might have some imput.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I'm upstairs in the Milton room Ryan. We're loud, proud and ready to give as good as we get. As much as I detest the Broncos I do love suncorp as a venue. Good views good facilities and easy to get into. CARN THE BOYS.

Coach Potato's picture

Bit hard to be a wanker without having a hand in it somewhere.

mark ashford's picture

Yes Coach I would have been happy with a drawn series each time.
IMO golden point is a real problem. Clubs with sharp shooters will prevail.
But what happens in the finals? When there's a draw.
Do we replay games?
Haven't got time for that.
Golden try is one answer but what if it doesn't happen.
Maybe mid week replays would work and the fittest team wins.
Worth looking at.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy Enjoy the game mate. Glad you're at Suncorp to see my Broncs win.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy. Your coach should get "Coach of the year" mate.
He may have had some inkling of the cap problems but (I think no involvement) and continued on to get the Eels where they are.
No Foran, no Norman no Peats and you're still winning.
Well done but I hope you lose tonight.

Coach Potato's picture

Interesting to see how Broncos will go against a better team than Souths or Dragons.

mark ashford's picture

Yes Coach must admit I'm a bit concerned. Is this the end?
Many players need to improve to beat the Eels.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Tell him he's dreaming.

Coach Potato's picture

Forget about internal problems, they just don't look like a bunch of guys that like each other that much.

Kinda like workmates that you have no issue with, just that you wouldn't ever go out together outside of work. Just not your types. Could be wrong. It's just the impression I get.

Coach Potato's picture

He was trying to catch the ball you fools.

I was Really M who would run towards the defence and throw the ball over and catch, causing the rule which says thats against the rules.

It's never been a knock-on though.

Not until August 12, 2016.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Ref is on the take. And Sutton has no clue.

Coach Potato's picture

Sorry Dally M who invented the toss over play.
That was hardly what French did. Was a try.

Hey King Wally, you must love being sandwiched in between Snorkella and Lockyer.
When was the last time out of the whole panel, you had the most hair?

mark ashford's picture

Ah Coach you know the rules better than the refs. You must be a genius.
The Broncs are playing better than the Eels.
Both teams making mistakes.
The Broncs to sneak ahead in the second half.

Tailspin's picture

Hey Mark, in finals it should be extra time till someone scores a try, no more field goals.

mark ashford's picture

Hair has something to do with this?
have a look at Mark Guyer

Rocket Ryan's picture

Big win here tonight coachy boy give martin and cleary a copy of the game 6 and 7 tearing it up pretty sure baggy left early broncos looked real could couple of lucky trys early then nothing don't know about Arthur coach of the year mark in attack they looked clueless

Go broncos

mark ashford's picture

Sorry Baggy your Eels flogged.
If Corey had his boot on would have been by ten more.
All the Broncs stood up.
Very proud of the boys.
What say you Rocket? Are we good or are we unbelievable!
No comments Coach...a bit worried maybe.

a's picture

Yep you guess it the Broncos are back baby

Rocket Ryan's picture

Easy win for panthers this week no worries for coach there.

mark ashford's picture

Yeah Rocket I was trying to be kind. Eels have performed way above expectations considering what has happened this year.
BUT the Broncs are back baby big time.
Look who the Eels have beaten this season, plenty of big names.
Next,, will be the doggies at home, another win. Then the Storm away, could be a problem.
We'll be there mate when it counts.

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
Broncos were good tonight.

mark ashford's picture

Why isn't Coach commenting about Brad Arthur not congratulating the Broncos. Seems like a big thing for you Coach.

mark ashford's picture

Thinker, did you feel comfortable just saying the Broncs were "good" or were you just trying to keep Coach happy?

Rocket Ryan's picture

Tigerholic better watch out the panthers might roll out temarny martin next week what would you do then.

The Thinker's picture

Mark,
I suspect the Broncos are on an upward spiral. They can win the comp this year.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Wow talking about getting ahead of oneself. I stayed till the bitter end Ryan, unlike a lot of supporters on both sides. A few rough calls went against us. That French try should have been given, as that try where Issac was pulled back should have been denying. Sutton has lost his bottle, our edges were once again soft and filthy that we let Milford through the center a few times without ACTUALLY hitting him. Oh well we were done by the better side, I think that period where Flash dropped the ball, Pritchard got it back only for Flash to cough it straight back up killed us. Ah well, the well used phrase this year for Parra, wait till this mess is over and we have most our team back.
