Round eleven selections

Cronulla Sharks vs North Queensland Cowboys – Thursday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

I'm assuming, and it's an important assumption, that Thurston won't be playing on Thursday night (tipsters take note that he's named on an extended bench). Michael Morgan reminded Origin selectors he was available with a scintillating performance against the Bulldogs – having Granville and Coote makes a world of difference. I expected the Cowboys pack to struggle against the Bulldogs but I was clearly wrong. This week they have to step up once again and they'll take confidence out of the performance last week. They're in this, but back-to-back away wins against big packs seems a big ask to me. Given their overall record at Shark Park (33% win rate) I'm leaning, reluctantly I have to say, to the home side. The Sharks aren't playing anywhere near their best but they keep doing enough to win. If they improve Paul Gallen could be lifting another premiership trophy. I did a little vomit in my mouth as I wrote that. Bleugh!

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks by 4

New Zealand Warriors vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – FMG Stadium (Waikato)

The Warriors will be pleased to be home where they've won their last three games and lost only once all season, although home for them in round eleven is in Waikato and their record in New Zealand away from Mt Smart isn't flash. These sides met in round four and the Dragons won convincingly but a few things have changed since then. Foran pulled out of that game during the warm-up which wouldn't have helped. Let's assume he gets through the stretching drills this weekend. Matulino is a very handy addition on the Warriors bench given the Dragons formidable forwards. No Mannering though...which is a concern. The round four Dragons included Widdop, Dugan and Aitken, and what's left of their backline needs to find a way to score points. They were arguably the better side against the Sharks in round ten but couldn't win. Scoring points has been an issue for the Dragons in recent seasons and I'm concerned they may be drifting that way again as the season wears on. That said, I'm tipping them in what is apparently an upset. I think that Dragons pack will simply bulldoze over the top of the Warriors on Friday night. Paul Vaughan should, on form, be wearing an Origin jersey this season – but for which team? He was born in Canberra, played all his junior footy in Canberra and started his professional career with the Raiders. I better give Kevvie Walters a call – I may have found Queensland a very good prop forward.

Verdict – Dragons by 4

Result – Dragons by 16

Brisbane Broncos vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Wests Tigers have won just five games against the Broncos in their history but, rather surprisingly, four of those wins were at Suncorp. If they win again they'll be winning without Mitchell Moses whose transition to the Eels starts this weekend. The other big three have been named. Jimmy the Jet is back for the Broncos and Ben Hunt has been named on an extended bench. I'm sure Hunt would like an opportunity before the Origin squads are named so don't be surprised if he gets the call up. The Broncos have lost just once at home this season – to the Cowboys in extra time. Better teams than the Tigers have walked away from Suncorp with their tails between their legs this season. I expect the Tigers (who do have tails) will be doing the same. I mentioned it somewhere in the comments somewhere but I'll mention it here too. Matt Gillett is the best forward in the game right now. I exclude Cameron Smith from the group I define as 'forwards' on a technicality. Smith is however, the best accountant in the game...ever (apologies to Geoff Toovey).

Verdict – Broncos by 10

Result – Broncos by 36

Gold Coast Titans vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

Last week the Titans conceded 36 points to the Melbourne Storm and they still won. It was an astonishing scoreline for a couple of reasons. Firstly, teams don't score 36 points and lose too often (that's the third highest losing tally ever) and secondly, the last time the Storm conceded 38 points or more was way back in round four of 2014. Now this wasn't some Origin depleted Storm side either, and for that reason the Titans have to come away from that game feeling ten foot tall and bullet proof. Manly flew the boxes against the Broncos shortly thereafter but then went back into the boxes for the last 65 minutes. They back up from an away game in Brisbane with an away game on the Gold Coast. Would they stay up here for the whole week or travel home in between? Either way it's a logistical challenge. Tom Trbojevic is unavailable and he isn't the be-all and end-all of the Sea Eagles attack but he's a very important cog. At Brookie this would be a toss of the coin decision, but on the Gold Coast it's the Titans for me.

Verdict – Titans by 8

Result – Sea Eagles by 20

Parramatta Eels vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

I used to have a bit of a theory about the Raiders – that theory being they usually lose when everyone expects them to win. They reminded us last weekend that the theory still has legs. Whether they respond to that wake-up call with a more typical Raiders performance this weekend remains to be seen. The Eels are without Corey Norman for a while, but this is still a competitive side and there are some handy inclusions this week in Bevan French, Beau Scott and Brad Takairangi. The other big inclusion is Mitchell Moses with a mid-season switch from the Tigers to the Eels. He's named on an extended bench but it wouldn't surprise to see him thrown straight into a starring role. In any case I'm with the Raiders and a form reversal, and a big game from Josh Papalii for his club and the Origin selectors. If both teams bring their best it's the game of the round.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result – Raiders by 6

Newcastle Knights vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Panthers realise they have to turn up to play on Sunday afternoon, given the Knights astonishing win over the Raiders in round ten. Mind you, the Panthers are a $1.28 favourite, and that's skinny for a team running 14th playing away from home. While I won't be backing them I will be tipping them. A standing ovation for the Knights and their victory last weekend...and how good are their fans for continuing to push through the turnstiles? You can only applaud their effort and resilience. Winning two in a row isn't beyond them, but a competitive loss looks more likely.

Verdict – Panthers by 4

Result – Panthers by 10

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Everyone: How good were the Roosters last weekend?

The Thinker: They were good. They were very good.

Everyone: What was wrong with the Bulldogs last weekend?

The Thinker: They were wrong. There were very wrong.

Verdict – Roosters by 20

Result – Roosters by 6

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday night – NIB Stadium

There are no shortage of teams with a poor record against the Storm, and unfortunately for the Bunnies their record is close to the worst. 26 times they have met for 22 purple victories. Sadly for the Bunnies the Storm are coming off a loss, and I almost never tip against the Storm if they are coming off a loss. I mentioned earlier how rare it is for the Storm to leak as many points as they did against the Titans, and Bellyache will be drilling them on their defence all week. With the ball in hand the Storm were fantastic. Providing they hold their form in attack, and improve their defence they are close enough to a good thing. I can't possibly take $1.28 about the Panthers when I can take $1.38 about the Storm. Gamble responsibly.

Verdict – Storm by 16

Result – Storm by 8

Mr Thinker, what's your view on JT joining the Roosters coaching team? He's worked before with Trent Robinson so it's a nice fit. Also a few extra years experience has helped. I've always rated JT as a terrific footballer, with coaching smarts. I feel, his people skills need developing. What do you think, spending a few years with Trent may help those people skills and back to a head coach position? Cheers from Mr Awesome

Fortress's picture

I think Jason Taylor is a jinx from his north Sydney days,no people skills or player management skills, the way he handled a tigers legend Robbie Farah was disgusting don't rate him at all he should retire gracefully hopeless and inept to say the least and he looks like a dried up prune echhhhhhhhhhhhh surely the chooks can do better than him where ever he goes he leaves the place in a wreak echhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that's my opinion enough said !!!!!!!!!

Cheers from the fortress!!!!!!

Johnny Awesome's picture

I agree Mr Fortress, the way Farah was treated was pretty ordinary. In saying that, I think he has learn't a lot from that experience. Mate, he's got a good football head just needs to develop people relations and Trent Robinson is not a bad choice to mature. Fairdinkum, in JT's playing days, he was a tough little player, very much in Tooveys mode, but a step down in calibre. I remember a game, when he was playing for Norths and he played the whole second half with a broken ankle. Don't write him off Mr Fortress, I'm sure he has his regrets as well and a young family to boot. Cheers mate from Mr Awesome

pabdul's picture

disagree trent robinson is a very smart man. your right as far as being the head coach Taylor can fall out with players but only because those players thought they were above him. but the roosters now have the old firm with fitzgibbon controlling the forwards and Taylor running the backs throw in their kicking games and Robinsons is on a winner . this last happened in 2013 and we know what happened then.

a's picture

I don't really like Jason Talyor Trent Robison is too good for him

christine's picture

Well I don't like either of them , out with the old in with the new ...

pabdul's picture

moses to play for parra this week

pabdul's picture

i dont like Nutella but its a winning formula

Johnny Awesome's picture

Yes Mr Pabdul, I agree Roosters have a very balanced coaching arrangement now, step 1 done and dusted, step 2 take it on the field. I wouldn't use Parramatta as a yardstick, they were very ordinary. In saying that Roosters are travelling under the radar still, I'll be interested to see how they get hit at State of Origin time? Cheers from Mr Awesome

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi all,
Fairdinkum, Dugan going to Cronulla, Packer going to Wests, any other bad for the Dragons?
Cheers from Mr Awesome

pabdul's picture

u sure dugan to sharks st george is a much better hospital than Sutherland

christine's picture

Pabdul Storm are a protected species things go in there favour just because they are storm , roosters used to be that way too a few years ago but these days it isn't quite the case & i'm not saying it to offend anyone so don't think I am but if I don't like Jason taylor or trent robinson that's my opinion & i'm entitled to my opinion just like anyone else & I except the fact you are too remember coach isn't on here now we are entitled to our own opinions not just someone else's & that the same applies to me too as well as you or anyone else & my main gripe with roosters isn't really robinson as such it's the board politis gets what politis wants even if they shouldn't I mean if a player gets banned it's for a reason it either an off field indiscreation or on field incident but that doesn't mean because you have money you get your own way just because you want them to play ...

christine's picture

Pabdul what i'm saying to you is politis has more money than the nrl so what politis wants politis gets so who is running the show really the nrl or politis , it's not personal i'm not saying it just because your a roosters fan okay it's not the team I have a problem with as such or the players even though I agree with you about blake ferguson I personally think he's a grub & I don't know how anyone had a child with him that seriously creeps me out ok I just wanted to make that clear what I was referring to was politis more so than the coach ...

mark ashford's picture

Hi Guys & Gals
On the Jason Taylor thing, thought he was a great player and goal kicker in his time at Norths.
Since going into the coaching ranks maybe his ego clashed with Farrer's ego and others.
Ego _v_ Ego = no go.
Another round of difficult pics, with favourites Storm and Raiders going down last week.
Let's leave Coach out of this he'll come back when and if he's ready.

christine's picture

Mark the point was we are all entitled to our opinions it wasn't anything to do with coach as such it was just the way I worded what I had to say ok no harm done ...

mark ashford's picture

Hi Chris
Yes no harm done.
Coach has left a few of us (you probably most of all) with a hangover or two, and he never brought a drink.
I am so pleased to see you offering opinions, predictions and whatever else you want to say about our great game.
No doubt in the past you were afraid to comment because of him.
Never be afraid of bullies just have your say.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi all,
For all it's worth Mr Coach Potao actually had a real go at tidying up his comments. I remember him being sorry for upsetting folk with his ruse of playing the bad guy. Remember folk, it's good to meet people and have a forum of discussion but guess what, don't take stuff too personally, our real lives start when we leave this screen. Cheers from Mr Awesome

mark ashford's picture

Yes Johnny A
Coach did make an attempt and I believe a genuine one to "tidy up" his comments.
If he was serious why isn't he still here?
I for one would welcome him back maybe he just needs to be a bit more sensitive when replying to some of the posters here.
My friend Rocket Ryan and I enjoyed our Panthers/Broncs rivalry and of course State of Origin.
As you say reality is when you turn off your "puter" but for some this is an important part of life.
You know, people who aren't well, or rely on this site for entertainment. Or some that just don't have a partner not talking about me of course.
Any QLD, RL, FISHING ladies out there????

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hello Mr Mark Ashford, mate, you end finding Ms right when you least expect it. By the way all, I reckon Cronulla and Nth Qld plus Titans v Manly are the matchup of the round for me. Cheers from Mr Awesome

a's picture

Yeah I think Coach will come back when he ready maybe he might have matured and be a better person I think we should leave it up to him

christine's picture

Johnny awesome people such as mark , "a" , newbie, even tigerholic can vouch for it I for one copped most of the grief & harassment from coach & it's a rugby league website no one has to put up with that & mark I actually have a migraine right now since I even mentioned his name not joking talking about a lingering risidule effect but seriously with the ms I do get a lot of migraines I have actually named it the coach affect ...

Fortress's picture

I totally agree with you Christine can't stand Taylor, and the NRL should run the NRL not individuals or players or former players for example Phil gould who thinks he is the gospel and thinks he knows it all how annoying is he ouchhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

OK this is going to be quick because I'm sick of talking about another know it all Johnny awesome he was a fake OK I'm glad his gone because when he is on here the mood changes now everyone is happy for example "A" can now have the confidence to run his own comp couldn't do that when he was around and he bagged it out when he came back and another example christine is happier than ever not been bullied by a ego -maniac sorry that's how I feel and nothing and no one on the face of this earth or universe will make be believe other wise. I'm just saying what most of us think of him on this site he loves the attention so that's my opinion you see others have and will always bring him up because he was a rat a fake not just me that thinks like this OK!!!!!

OK johnny we all have an opinion my thoughts and feelings are shared by many go back and read the past posts mate I'm just over the moon he is gone!!!!!

Great round of footy coming up all starting to get very interesting indeed !!!!!!

Off to the gym chat soon from the fortress where its better to be real than be a fake !!!!!!!!!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Johnny A
I'm keeping my options open. No doubt there is a woman out there who will love me. She will probably be blind, uncaring and a ferocious NSW supporter...I'm thinking of placing an ad.
Christine forget about Coach he can't get to you anymore.
Just keep yourself well, enjoy this site and keep posting.
PADBUL I'm expecting a comment or two. Maybe you have a sister or a close friend who may suit.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Mr Mark Ashford, now that's funny. Personality counts and genuineness goes along with it, it'll happen. Anyway, have move like a bush fire with a tail wind. She who I obey has arrived. Cheers from Mr Awesome

a's picture

Yeah I glad Coach is gone everyone can have an opinion without it getting called bullshit

mark ashford's picture

Yes "a" it's all a little bit more relaxed now. Which it should be.
Will your Cowboys get over the Sharks tomorrow night?
After their performance last weekend away to the Dogs I think so.
Cowboys to win by 12

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi Christine and Mr 'a' one last call, sorry you got so affected by Mr Coach Potato, if it's any consolation, I truly believe he didn't realise the affect he had until it was a tad late. I really believe everyone makes mistakes and deserves to be forgiven. None of us are perfect. Also, if people carry scars this can take longer. Anyway, you have a great site here to talk footy and other stuff thanks to Mr Thinker, how great is Australia hey, democracy, freedom of speech and footy. Have to move quicker than a one eyed mouse watching 10 mouse holes. Catch up later, cheers from Awesome

christine's picture

I think Parramatta / raiders will be a good game this round too , is pappali back for raiders or not ? if he's back johnny awesome then you have a chance they will win because pappali & rapana are a great combination ...

christine's picture

Has anyone apart from me noticed Spartan warrior doesn't actually post any tips I for one have noticed it ?

mark ashford's picture

Johnny A
thanks for your comment yes things can happen a bit late but we must forgive if we can. Forgiveness is a huge thing and should be embraced.
OH and I think you meant a "one eyed CAT" watching numerous mouse holes.....surely... unless of course it was a gay mouse?

Hey big Pete my fellow mighty eagle will be fixing up my e-mail mate sorry been very busy but I will get around to fixing it then I will be in the boss man the thinker and we will finally meet up,maybe go for a ride on the eagle "turbo" cat its very fast mate goes through water like tommy turbo goes through the defence.

Then a big, big, big, lunch I love my food and of course exchange stories and facts of our mighty eagles.

Keep well buddy I think we will beat the Titans this week they would be very angry and an angry eagle can be very devastating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

Sorry big Pete will be in touch with the boss man the thinker very soon.

Cheers buddy!!!!!!!!

a's picture

Yeah I think Cowboys will get over the Sharks on thrusday night

christine's picture

Mark we have one saving grace josh papalii is allowed to play origin now we are just sweating on jt ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Love how the coach is the villain of the jt Vs Farah debacle. There is two sides to every story and Robbie drinking on the scoreboard was the one to pull the heart strings. Love to hear jt's side of it. But not fussed about Moses running out as one of the BOYS, we invested in Jamal and it's time to at least blood him. Aim for the future, and not the past performance of another team.

a's picture

I don't think JT should be playing this weekend

BigPeteBx's picture

Evenin Pabdul - I think Dugan is odds on to land in any hospital, where his team plays at.
Bugger me he takes some knocks and one would have thought all those tattoo's were a protective covering.

BigPeteBx's picture

Pabdul -
Moses to play for parra this week & Noah to lift The Raiders of the Canberra Ark.

BigPeteBx's picture

Pabdul/SBAB - if Nutella is a winning formula.
Have you tried Promite?
It turns the iron in your blood to lead in your you know where.

She's cool Fortress and I look forward to it, as soon as the weather is back to Summer and I have some time on my side.
I got a fair swag of emails arrive today, so best answer a few before the sack. Several funnies that I cant get to paste on this site as they are graphic form.
Big week on my agenda here mate.
Keep well - Big Pete

Mark A - Pabdul has all the answers and he reads the Courier Mail.
His imagination never fails.

Morning Awesome J.
Enjoy it On the Buses.
Is Stan and Blakey there?
A Little Ray of Sunshine comin your way today mate.....humming.

Wont be in Canberra sorry. That is also FA Cup Final weekend from London (Wembley). Cold enough here, without going to your place.
But I will be in Bx Town if you happen to be coming over to watch Raiders v's The Pussies on June 1oth Round 14. It is as I've mentioned before here, one of Penrith's home games, that they bring here annually, for country people to support, as Panthers has a base here in their licensed club and vested interests with rugby league (Group 10) and juniors etc.

We'll catch up in the Summer with or without the Breeze....humming
I bet Pabdul is, when he rises.

Cheers and have a nice sunny day. Minus 1 here yesterday morning mate.
