Cronulla Sharks vs North Queensland Cowboys – Thursday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium
I'm assuming, and it's an important assumption, that Thurston won't be playing on Thursday night (tipsters take note that he's named on an extended bench). Michael Morgan reminded Origin selectors he was available with a scintillating performance against the Bulldogs – having Granville and Coote makes a world of difference. I expected the Cowboys pack to struggle against the Bulldogs but I was clearly wrong. This week they have to step up once again and they'll take confidence out of the performance last week. They're in this, but back-to-back away wins against big packs seems a big ask to me. Given their overall record at Shark Park (33% win rate) I'm leaning, reluctantly I have to say, to the home side. The Sharks aren't playing anywhere near their best but they keep doing enough to win. If they improve Paul Gallen could be lifting another premiership trophy. I did a little vomit in my mouth as I wrote that. Bleugh!
Verdict – Sharks by 4
Result – Sharks by 4
New Zealand Warriors vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – FMG Stadium (Waikato)
The Warriors will be pleased to be home where they've won their last three games and lost only once all season, although home for them in round eleven is in Waikato and their record in New Zealand away from Mt Smart isn't flash. These sides met in round four and the Dragons won convincingly but a few things have changed since then. Foran pulled out of that game during the warm-up which wouldn't have helped. Let's assume he gets through the stretching drills this weekend. Matulino is a very handy addition on the Warriors bench given the Dragons formidable forwards. No Mannering though...which is a concern. The round four Dragons included Widdop, Dugan and Aitken, and what's left of their backline needs to find a way to score points. They were arguably the better side against the Sharks in round ten but couldn't win. Scoring points has been an issue for the Dragons in recent seasons and I'm concerned they may be drifting that way again as the season wears on. That said, I'm tipping them in what is apparently an upset. I think that Dragons pack will simply bulldoze over the top of the Warriors on Friday night. Paul Vaughan should, on form, be wearing an Origin jersey this season – but for which team? He was born in Canberra, played all his junior footy in Canberra and started his professional career with the Raiders. I better give Kevvie Walters a call – I may have found Queensland a very good prop forward.
Verdict – Dragons by 4
Result – Dragons by 16
Brisbane Broncos vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium
The Wests Tigers have won just five games against the Broncos in their history but, rather surprisingly, four of those wins were at Suncorp. If they win again they'll be winning without Mitchell Moses whose transition to the Eels starts this weekend. The other big three have been named. Jimmy the Jet is back for the Broncos and Ben Hunt has been named on an extended bench. I'm sure Hunt would like an opportunity before the Origin squads are named so don't be surprised if he gets the call up. The Broncos have lost just once at home this season – to the Cowboys in extra time. Better teams than the Tigers have walked away from Suncorp with their tails between their legs this season. I expect the Tigers (who do have tails) will be doing the same. I mentioned it somewhere in the comments somewhere but I'll mention it here too. Matt Gillett is the best forward in the game right now. I exclude Cameron Smith from the group I define as 'forwards' on a technicality. Smith is however, the best accountant in the game...ever (apologies to Geoff Toovey).
Verdict – Broncos by 10
Result – Broncos by 36
Gold Coast Titans vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium
Last week the Titans conceded 36 points to the Melbourne Storm and they still won. It was an astonishing scoreline for a couple of reasons. Firstly, teams don't score 36 points and lose too often (that's the third highest losing tally ever) and secondly, the last time the Storm conceded 38 points or more was way back in round four of 2014. Now this wasn't some Origin depleted Storm side either, and for that reason the Titans have to come away from that game feeling ten foot tall and bullet proof. Manly flew the boxes against the Broncos shortly thereafter but then went back into the boxes for the last 65 minutes. They back up from an away game in Brisbane with an away game on the Gold Coast. Would they stay up here for the whole week or travel home in between? Either way it's a logistical challenge. Tom Trbojevic is unavailable and he isn't the be-all and end-all of the Sea Eagles attack but he's a very important cog. At Brookie this would be a toss of the coin decision, but on the Gold Coast it's the Titans for me.
Verdict – Titans by 8
Result – Sea Eagles by 20
Parramatta Eels vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium
I used to have a bit of a theory about the Raiders – that theory being they usually lose when everyone expects them to win. They reminded us last weekend that the theory still has legs. Whether they respond to that wake-up call with a more typical Raiders performance this weekend remains to be seen. The Eels are without Corey Norman for a while, but this is still a competitive side and there are some handy inclusions this week in Bevan French, Beau Scott and Brad Takairangi. The other big inclusion is Mitchell Moses with a mid-season switch from the Tigers to the Eels. He's named on an extended bench but it wouldn't surprise to see him thrown straight into a starring role. In any case I'm with the Raiders and a form reversal, and a big game from Josh Papalii for his club and the Origin selectors. If both teams bring their best it's the game of the round.
Verdict – Raiders by 4
Result – Raiders by 6
Newcastle Knights vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium
The Panthers realise they have to turn up to play on Sunday afternoon, given the Knights astonishing win over the Raiders in round ten. Mind you, the Panthers are a $1.28 favourite, and that's skinny for a team running 14th playing away from home. While I won't be backing them I will be tipping them. A standing ovation for the Knights and their victory last weekend...and how good are their fans for continuing to push through the turnstiles? You can only applaud their effort and resilience. Winning two in a row isn't beyond them, but a competitive loss looks more likely.
Verdict – Panthers by 4
Result – Panthers by 10
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium
Everyone: How good were the Roosters last weekend?
The Thinker: They were good. They were very good.
Everyone: What was wrong with the Bulldogs last weekend?
The Thinker: They were wrong. There were very wrong.
Verdict – Roosters by 20
Result – Roosters by 6
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday night – NIB Stadium
There are no shortage of teams with a poor record against the Storm, and unfortunately for the Bunnies their record is close to the worst. 26 times they have met for 22 purple victories. Sadly for the Bunnies the Storm are coming off a loss, and I almost never tip against the Storm if they are coming off a loss. I mentioned earlier how rare it is for the Storm to leak as many points as they did against the Titans, and Bellyache will be drilling them on their defence all week. With the ball in hand the Storm were fantastic. Providing they hold their form in attack, and improve their defence they are close enough to a good thing. I can't possibly take $1.28 about the Panthers when I can take $1.38 about the Storm. Gamble responsibly.
Verdict – Storm by 16
Result – Storm by 8

I know, spoke to Brad and Ken during the first year there. There was a feeling in the room that it was going to turn around and there were people above them were working hard to make change, now with that crap last year, we are starting to do the dance again. It'll be a good year in the end.

I have to say well done to manly & raiders tonight both teams did well but I would have liked raiders to win by a bigger score not convinced they've turned the corner yet & baggy gee sorry for your loss parra will come good again ...

Good morning all,
Yep Baggy Gee, injuries to Nathan Brown and Michael Jennings didn't help your cause. It was a close game and Canberra finally got through a close one though unconvincing. I think Parramatta are in good shape and that dangerous combination between Guthrrson and Moses will only get better. A lot of potential there. I really rate Brad Arthur as a coach. She'll be right mate. By the way Christine, you make a valid point, the Raiders current games are quite scrappy, looking a lot like a Bulldogs outfit, gritty but not fancy, Ricky keeps trotting out the same line, don't expect us to win by much and there will be more of what we saw last night. Look that's fine, if as a coach he's changed tact, but I feel he's gone the other way too far. I understand after three losses the Raiders would have been cautious and just wanted a win. Ultimately they need their confidence back and get back to some more exciting footy. I think it will come, they've got the monkey off their back now.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

I'll agree, after three losses including a blow by the Knight's ( how good would they be feeling). He might be taking it on a game by game process, doesn't matter if you win by a point or a ton, winning is winning. Rebuilding the faith/confidence in the team, but style wise he like attacking football with brilliant football minds.

Hey Pabdul - easy on the plane and candies.
Loved John Candy in Uncle Buck!
I love Adelaide, but a quick, too short a trip for you mate.
Hope it is working out ok, coz family issues or whatever, often come along at short notice or in doses, thereof.
Sounds like your weekend has taken off (scuze pun).
Just see what sort of persuading you can give the hostess with the mostess, to televise this arvos's game for you on in-flight tv.
We enjoyed a few last night, on our annual dinner outing.....especially watching highlights of the days NRL, on Matty Johns' Late Show at one of the 7 pubs that are within three blocks walk of where I live.
Take it steady Bro, regards to Paula.

Good early afternoon Fortress and Mark A.
A great win by Manly yesterday to make up for the previous week.
Long way to go, but as Bennie would be telling Broncs - you need to make sure of the early season and must win games, as it could be the difference in making the top 4 or playing eliminations stuff, come September.
@Mark - life is what you make it. If you've enjoyed doing what you've been doing, keep at it, as the stresses of life wont be so great.
If you shop about and are rather observant with the your style and easy on conversation - a little lady might just head your way.
The longest "cruise" I've ever done was Port Melbourne to Devonport and on the return home, the waves Rocked the Boat....humming.... that much that many passengers returned to their cabins. The big cruise ships are much different and there is always events happening.
I'd say to keep your Qld traditions alive, you'd be lazing about the pool with a pina colada and sunnies with no need for binoculars.
Never know what you meet on a cruise, or at a singles club.
Good luck!!
@Awesome J - has been an eventful round Kandos. Crisp air here with sun shining, so far. I get this feeling that Knights might topple Panthers this arvo, will be close. Remember that Knights are at home again.
Mighty Eagles played like dynamos yesterday, away from home. Catch-up on last weeks game. Still getting over it mate. 14 nil at the break with a big enough lead to win The Melbourne Cup and the stayers came from behind and collected the chaff and carrots.
Have a great day.

Christine, find out the company and see what facilities they have and can offer. It's a great way to see places and enjoy the process of getting there. Once you leave port you don't stop so each time you look it's a new place. Well worth investigating if they can make it as easy as possible for you.

hi everyone look i dont post to often. And i dont like to get involved in all the bickering and fights, that goes on sometimes on this site.Fortress is only stating fact, the game does have its problems maybe the powers to be should fix up the mess.He was good enough to give that poster baggy gee some advice, and i feel it was great advice,he should ask the questions of his club, to why there has been probs and poor performance.
we all love our clubs its normal, but facts are facts, and fortress is asking the qustions, that so many are scared to state regarding whats going on in our game.
i have read alot of the fortressess posts, he is very passionate, wears his heart on his selve, and loves his club but also loves his rugby league and the game.
i have met him, and he is very, very funny speaks his mind and says it as it is, He has always been that way, very spirited, and he always says to me he loves the site, and well most of the people on here.
just a big shout out to big pete, and the the rest of the footy lovers,im sure we can all get along and agree to disagree.

Hi all,
Firstly Big Pete, just got of the phone to my folks in Kandos. Did you know that kandos cement was the best cement in the country, it left Blue Circle for dead. Thats an inbiased opinion. Also, 30 % of the Sydney Opera house was built with Kandos cement and thats the only part of the Opera House that hasn't needed maintenance, another unbiased opinion. Now, onto footy all, gee I enjoyed that game between the Roosters and Bulldogs, it was another ripper. Now State of Origin, its time to forget Farah in the hooking role and plan for the future. i reckon Cameron McInnes firstly, followed by Apisai Koroisau could do the job. Cheers from Mr Awesome
Submitted by pabdul on
sorry mate the best cement is from naromine
Submitted by Johnny Awesome on
Hi all,
Eagle Rocks and Fortress its all good, I think there were a few movies many years ago, "Me, myself and I, Me Myself and Irene, Me, Myself and Her, Me Myself and Mum and lastly Me...Myself. Now you either go for the three's company version and have a party or you stick to your dynamic duo version. It's all good either way.
Cheers from Mr Awesome.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
But with a huge project like the Opera house shouldn't it be widamine?
Submitted by Johnny Awesome on
Hello Mr Pabdul,
I think you are referring to concrete producing companies mate. They don't produce the cement, they buy in cement and make concrete and make no mistake its jolly good concrete. Great area around Narromine, Dubbo, Wellington region. That whole area is like home to me, love it. Kandos Cement which sadly closed 2 years ago opened up in 1914. the main ingredients for cement are as i remember, limestone, sandstone, shale, iron, clay, and gypsum as the setting agent. The Kandos region which is an old volcanic region, you can still see the old volcanoes, had these materials in abundance. I worked as an apprentice and then a tradesman at the Kandos Cement Factory. Sadly, imports finally killed off Kandos cement which gave me my trade.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

Greetings football fans,
I've updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp. Plenty of high scoring efforts in round eleven but congratulations to SeaEagle47 and Newbie from Perth who both managed 8 from 8. Outstanding work gentlemen.
Scott M has been joined at the top of the tipping leaderboard by some knucklehead called The Thinker.
Just four games in found 12. I'll have the tipping page published on Monday night and will have my previews and selections published on Wednesday.
