Cronulla Sharks vs North Queensland Cowboys – Thursday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium
I'm assuming, and it's an important assumption, that Thurston won't be playing on Thursday night (tipsters take note that he's named on an extended bench). Michael Morgan reminded Origin selectors he was available with a scintillating performance against the Bulldogs – having Granville and Coote makes a world of difference. I expected the Cowboys pack to struggle against the Bulldogs but I was clearly wrong. This week they have to step up once again and they'll take confidence out of the performance last week. They're in this, but back-to-back away wins against big packs seems a big ask to me. Given their overall record at Shark Park (33% win rate) I'm leaning, reluctantly I have to say, to the home side. The Sharks aren't playing anywhere near their best but they keep doing enough to win. If they improve Paul Gallen could be lifting another premiership trophy. I did a little vomit in my mouth as I wrote that. Bleugh!
Verdict – Sharks by 4
Result – Sharks by 4
New Zealand Warriors vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – FMG Stadium (Waikato)
The Warriors will be pleased to be home where they've won their last three games and lost only once all season, although home for them in round eleven is in Waikato and their record in New Zealand away from Mt Smart isn't flash. These sides met in round four and the Dragons won convincingly but a few things have changed since then. Foran pulled out of that game during the warm-up which wouldn't have helped. Let's assume he gets through the stretching drills this weekend. Matulino is a very handy addition on the Warriors bench given the Dragons formidable forwards. No Mannering though...which is a concern. The round four Dragons included Widdop, Dugan and Aitken, and what's left of their backline needs to find a way to score points. They were arguably the better side against the Sharks in round ten but couldn't win. Scoring points has been an issue for the Dragons in recent seasons and I'm concerned they may be drifting that way again as the season wears on. That said, I'm tipping them in what is apparently an upset. I think that Dragons pack will simply bulldoze over the top of the Warriors on Friday night. Paul Vaughan should, on form, be wearing an Origin jersey this season – but for which team? He was born in Canberra, played all his junior footy in Canberra and started his professional career with the Raiders. I better give Kevvie Walters a call – I may have found Queensland a very good prop forward.
Verdict – Dragons by 4
Result – Dragons by 16
Brisbane Broncos vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium
The Wests Tigers have won just five games against the Broncos in their history but, rather surprisingly, four of those wins were at Suncorp. If they win again they'll be winning without Mitchell Moses whose transition to the Eels starts this weekend. The other big three have been named. Jimmy the Jet is back for the Broncos and Ben Hunt has been named on an extended bench. I'm sure Hunt would like an opportunity before the Origin squads are named so don't be surprised if he gets the call up. The Broncos have lost just once at home this season – to the Cowboys in extra time. Better teams than the Tigers have walked away from Suncorp with their tails between their legs this season. I expect the Tigers (who do have tails) will be doing the same. I mentioned it somewhere in the comments somewhere but I'll mention it here too. Matt Gillett is the best forward in the game right now. I exclude Cameron Smith from the group I define as 'forwards' on a technicality. Smith is however, the best accountant in the game...ever (apologies to Geoff Toovey).
Verdict – Broncos by 10
Result – Broncos by 36
Gold Coast Titans vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium
Last week the Titans conceded 36 points to the Melbourne Storm and they still won. It was an astonishing scoreline for a couple of reasons. Firstly, teams don't score 36 points and lose too often (that's the third highest losing tally ever) and secondly, the last time the Storm conceded 38 points or more was way back in round four of 2014. Now this wasn't some Origin depleted Storm side either, and for that reason the Titans have to come away from that game feeling ten foot tall and bullet proof. Manly flew the boxes against the Broncos shortly thereafter but then went back into the boxes for the last 65 minutes. They back up from an away game in Brisbane with an away game on the Gold Coast. Would they stay up here for the whole week or travel home in between? Either way it's a logistical challenge. Tom Trbojevic is unavailable and he isn't the be-all and end-all of the Sea Eagles attack but he's a very important cog. At Brookie this would be a toss of the coin decision, but on the Gold Coast it's the Titans for me.
Verdict – Titans by 8
Result – Sea Eagles by 20
Parramatta Eels vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium
I used to have a bit of a theory about the Raiders – that theory being they usually lose when everyone expects them to win. They reminded us last weekend that the theory still has legs. Whether they respond to that wake-up call with a more typical Raiders performance this weekend remains to be seen. The Eels are without Corey Norman for a while, but this is still a competitive side and there are some handy inclusions this week in Bevan French, Beau Scott and Brad Takairangi. The other big inclusion is Mitchell Moses with a mid-season switch from the Tigers to the Eels. He's named on an extended bench but it wouldn't surprise to see him thrown straight into a starring role. In any case I'm with the Raiders and a form reversal, and a big game from Josh Papalii for his club and the Origin selectors. If both teams bring their best it's the game of the round.
Verdict – Raiders by 4
Result – Raiders by 6
Newcastle Knights vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium
The Panthers realise they have to turn up to play on Sunday afternoon, given the Knights astonishing win over the Raiders in round ten. Mind you, the Panthers are a $1.28 favourite, and that's skinny for a team running 14th playing away from home. While I won't be backing them I will be tipping them. A standing ovation for the Knights and their victory last weekend...and how good are their fans for continuing to push through the turnstiles? You can only applaud their effort and resilience. Winning two in a row isn't beyond them, but a competitive loss looks more likely.
Verdict – Panthers by 4
Result – Panthers by 10
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium
Everyone: How good were the Roosters last weekend?
The Thinker: They were good. They were very good.
Everyone: What was wrong with the Bulldogs last weekend?
The Thinker: They were wrong. There were very wrong.
Verdict – Roosters by 20
Result – Roosters by 6
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday night – NIB Stadium
There are no shortage of teams with a poor record against the Storm, and unfortunately for the Bunnies their record is close to the worst. 26 times they have met for 22 purple victories. Sadly for the Bunnies the Storm are coming off a loss, and I almost never tip against the Storm if they are coming off a loss. I mentioned earlier how rare it is for the Storm to leak as many points as they did against the Titans, and Bellyache will be drilling them on their defence all week. With the ball in hand the Storm were fantastic. Providing they hold their form in attack, and improve their defence they are close enough to a good thing. I can't possibly take $1.28 about the Panthers when I can take $1.38 about the Storm. Gamble responsibly.
Verdict – Storm by 16
Result – Storm by 8

Baggy and johnny awesome your both welcome to your opinions but I'm sorry I totally disagree u both want to settle for mediocrity well that just says a lot to both your clubs performance over the last 20 years and please don't come back and tell me that one premiership between both your clubs in the last 35 to 40 years is not mediocre im merely pointing out fact I think your both upset because both your clubs don't measure up to make the top 8 league its not my fault or any body else's the stats show that ,so if you both think the game is going great guns, the bunker is just terrific and the refs are just making the odd mistake well then I seriously question weather you are both watching the same game the rest of us on this earth are watching than you both living in LA LA land !!!!!!!!
Cheers the fortress telling it as it is !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm hearing ya Mr Baggy Gee. There are some tries that are so obvious, they could blow the whistle there and then. However, it's the the fear of obstruction, offside. From the kick the refs are gun shy about. You can't really blame them, they're virtually damned if they do and damned if they don't. I reckon being a NRL ref is probably the most unappreciated job in the game from the spectators to players alike. It's been like that since time began. Cheers from Mr Awesome

This is what I was trying to get at, if there was a punishment for the howler that the bunker is there to prevent it would improve performance. But on the flip side, if there is a grey area, a "flat" pass, that charge down that James Graham executed on Josh Renyolds a few years back, the NRL has to come out all guns blazing and look after the ref that made the call. It should only be the really bad game changing calls that get belted not the heat of the moment ones.

Still thinking that we need a proof of concept and the 2 tier system works well, lets say that Rockhampton get moved from 2nd tier to first tier at the expense of the Tigers (Sorry tigerholic, just picking a random team.) Imagine the players that would get a boost coming out of that rich RL area. We could find a few new greats who due to cost of moving or lack of exposure would have other wise stagnated. I like the tier system and the possibility of relegation to spur the clubs to bringing it each and ever week.

The jokes on you johnny awsome I am relaxed buddy just stating facts Buddy don't be so blind not to see the truth I'm just passionate and love the game yes there are good things bout the game but the overall picture is bleak needs a makeover if u want me to put it in another way mate, the true passionate supporters of the game are walking away in droves most times half full stadims ,when it used to be packed every weekend, sorry mate its not the same game I grew up with its too much bout the dollar, the magic and aura has gone out of the game.

Good evening Baggy Gee, Fortress and Johnny A.
Great discussion on what you call a Tier System - brings tears to my eyes, to see a club demoted.
You have all had good thinking in this.
I strongly believe in promotion and relegation just like English Football (soccer). I recall so clearly that there was a club called Watford and owned by Sir Elton John. They were coached/managed by a former Liverpool player in John Toshack. They went from Division 4 to Division 1 (now Premier League), in four consecutive years...going through each division as they went. They bought well, judged well, managed well and played extra well.
NRL needs two or four extra clubs here. It's been said before.
A-League is the same, as people get sick of seeing clubs play each other 5 times in a 10 team comp, as A-League does.
Maybe in NRL have a 20 team comp and each one plays each other once, then the comp splits or bottom so many teams - drop back.
Whatever......let the brains trusts work it out, as to what is best for clubs and the logistics of it and in particular, if it will work for paying spectators.
Conversation continues........go to go out to dinner.
Keep well, keep thinking and keep the game honest.

Pete, the biggest problem I see is that if a team is bumped down then the player walk out and the firing of Coaches would be unstoppable. It would be the same as the EPL where if there is a period of a few weeks without success (no matter the reason, players illness/injury, national duties) Coaches and Managers get fired at the drop of a hat. But the flip side is watching a side like Watford climbing, investing in local talent, juniors and then getting repaid in kind once they made it to the top of the heap. That's what we love about the game, seeing the Bulldogs who hadn't won in 60 years get up in a great grand final. Its about the reward for hard work, smart management and keeping the faith.

Wow some excellent suggestions from Baggy, Johnny Awesome, Big Pete and Fortress.
Don't agree with all of it but would love to see more intervention (quickly) from the bunker.
#9 has said bunker can't rule on forward passes because of the positioning of their cameras. RUBBISH look at SOO we have flying cameras suspended above the ground.
Maybe we could have the touchies with a shoulder/helmet camera.
Or just have their eyes replaced with cameras you know Terminator style.
Seriously guys we have the best game of football in the world.
Sure our refs will make a mistake or two, they are human.
Why not just grab a beer and sit back and enjoy.

Go back to suburban grounds. Only the AFL will always sell out their main ground week in and week out. We just have to accept that ANZ is deader than the Dodo, or Manly's chance of winning the premiership this year. No one wants to sit in a ground that is only 10% full, and still pay full price. But lets go back to smaller ground and let the Broncos sell out Suncorp each week as they are the only team that can.
Submitted by mark ashford on
Baggy if we had 2 NRL teams in Brisbane/surrounds we would sell out both games each weekend provided they were on alternate weekends.
Titans have struggled with crowds because of their poor performance (in recent years) and the fact that the Gold Coast is filled with xVictorians who love their AFL but have not accepted the Suns.
Fox and #9's coverage have reduced Sydney's numbers at games as well as the entry fee and the cost of a pie or a beer.
Very expensive for a Dad to take his 3 kids to the footy today.
I don't know the answer do you?

I know Mark, I know. WE all complain that the Broncos get all the Friday night games, but lets be honest, they pack the ground, it's great. If ANY other team could do it they would get a share of those games. Friday night and Saturday night packed houses in Brisbane would be just great and make those two teams very successful as the NRL wouldn't have to contribute to their running costs. Hopefully we can do similar when the Parramatta sports park is open and we have the Wanders playing there as well. we'll see.

Good evening BG - I think, in most sports, its a two way street.
Coaches are hard enough to come by as it is. Good coaches are like hens teeth. Results are one thing in a very open competition, but nurturing younger players to blend with older experience players, is another.
I've often said in sports I've been involved - "don't crucify players before they are hanged", because you'll never put another pair of boots on them.
I saw it done once, when an under 17 player was thrown into 1st grade and he had hell belted out of him.
Players can walk, but doesn't mean to say they'll be in greener pastures. Some regret it, when opposed to players who are smarter/skillful, or on better conditions.
What evolves from it all is, if you stick to your digs and hang in there, the good times will roll in, before you know it. Patience and Perseverance with a capital P.
Cheers and good tactics when we are the observers.

True, and we have all seen young players ruined by being kicked up to early. We have also seen some great players start young and go on to greatness. I was lamenting the knee jerk reaction that many main stream team use when there are a few losses strung together. Take Man U, after Sir Alex left it was a revolving door policy with both managers and coaches, not really the guys hired to do the jobs fault, just very big shoes to fill.

David Moyes wasn't the man for Man Utd and wasn't given a real good chance. Louis van Gaal was the seat warmer, waiting for Jose M to enter at OT. All on big bucks, like them all in EPL and Europe.
Sir Alex was very successful and still monitors over the team squad.
He has a presence.
But Baggy, u r correct in how coaches on many a loss, are stuck on a shelf like Humpty Dumpty was on a wall. When they fall, they are out the door. Player revolts go on within clubs, it just takes that fire to be ignited and then its curtains.
Even Pep Guardiola (Man City) can see how difficult it is to manage in EPL and he came from the very strong Spanish League.

Hahaaaaaahaaaa caught your bluff baggy u or coach will never get rid of me from this site yes were all entitled to our opinions but don't blame me for the last time that your side hasnt won a comp since the mid 80's maybe its the owners the people that run the club that have stuffed up.
My top 8 premiere clubs was based on fact, performance titles won overall consistancy over the last 20 years and your club just does not cut it that's all.
Rocket Ryan it was a training run if the broncs kept the foot down it would of been 60 and yes ur right there is the elite top 8 and the bottom top 8 mate great win!!!!!
Just wanna say the passionate supporter of our game is dieing,I'm never going to go away because I believe we can bring it back to where it was people just have to see there are problems, yes it will always survive but we the people who love this game can make it great again.

Suncorp is an outstanding facility, and it helps that I can walk there in about ten minutes to get to the game, and stop at a few nice watering holes on the 90 minute walk home...but I do still like the old suburban grounds too.
If you go really suburban on a Sunday afternoon you can still park your car on the sideline for $5. Bring your own esky....crank up the ABC radio and listen to the NRL...Buy a burger or pie to support the local club...and with a bit luck you jag the meat tray raffle.
Then kick a ball around with the kids after the game. Fantastic way to 'waste' a Sunday afternoon.

Agree Christine but even you have said there are problems in the game that are destroying it for example drugs, gambling low crowds, bunker, refs, poor administration ect......we have to get with the times and step it up soccer and the afl are destroying the NRL in Sydney ,rugby league needs a life line we need to iron out the crap so we get back to the top it can be done with wise heads and people who love the game not just take and not give back.
Its funny pabdul doesn't love manly but he still respects them many times he has come on here and spoken well of former great players he has a gift and way of words but never hate, and why then can me and pabdul still respect one another even though we may not love one another's clubs to put it simply we understand one another and we are passionate about the game .
So why then the only 2 posters I have ever only been at war on this site coach and baggy pants why is it then that it lacks respect the answers are in past posts that people turn a blind eye to.you see its a game they play they before Ii have made no bad comment start it up by slandering me and my club but they try to cover it up by brinimg in another topic in the same post making people believe something else trying to fool everyone but they have never fooled me both of them are fake sorry but the past posts paint the story and quite frankly both of them fail as footy supporters !!!!!
Mark Ashford,rocket,big Pete,Christine "a", tailspin,johnny awesome,newbie,tiger,pabdul
Mary s how come then all these people I have respect for because they are real ,have a genuine love for the game and respect, not just making things up to fool everyone I've read all past posts and its all there in black and White.
I'm sorry the same can't be said of the other 2 posters it seems to me they are mates not just on here but away from here both act and think the same only baggy puts on the nice act just to deflect his mates hate and lies its a double act its been going on here for a long time that's why I'm that way towards the both of them because I don't trust there posts.
That's my final take on the matter everyone from now on I'm going to go back to my new idea of a two teir system and I really believe it would work ,............

Hello all,
Mr Thinker, you painted a perfect Sunday arvo. Yep, that's what footy is all about. Christine has a point regarding the cost of going to the footy. For a family of four, you are looking at a minimum of $120. The best way to support footy and your team, is to become a member. Memberships start as little as $60 and the merchandise you get is worth that anyway. I have two seats for all the Raiders games, guess what, Ibe got a mortgage and bills like everyone else. It costs me $500 a year for the inner bowl. I have a payment plan with the Raiders at $50 per month for 10 months. That's around $12.50 a week , three cups of coffee. Guess what, I don't do the coffee thing every day now and it covers my seats. I make my own coffee. The point I'm making is that you can support rugby league for as little as $60 a year or buy a seat or two and that equates to $20 per game per person for me. That's how I do it and it's affordable. It's all relative. $20 to watch 5 hrs of footy live, take your cut lunch, drinks but no cans and it's a bargain methinks Cheers from Mr Awesome

Whats up Doc!!!!
So try my situation in the country areas of the west.
Need to train/coach it and return. Overnight stay in Sydney.
Get to venue and return by Sydney Buses.
Yes we have a car, but test the patience on extra busy Sydney overflowing roads/highways/motorways. That's where a lot of the idiots are - not on this site.
Can be a costly venture, even if you wanted to do that a few times a year. I just purchase the NRL gear as my support. When the NRL improves their manner of operating, I will think about a change.
Some clubs have a "basic" membership, but it still contains tickets to games. I haven't been to a game since Manly played Souths at Brooky back in around late 70's. I stood next to George Piggins and Paul Sait, as they were waiting for reserve grade to finish and they'd dart back to dressing sheds to finish getting ready. Memories.....keep them alive. Just like going to the local game and getting involved with all afterwards. It was cheaper then, but didn't carry the risks like today and some of the "fruit loops" that are allowed to run amok in society.
As previous poster/bloggers have said.....it is too costly to go to a match with a few family members. Cost of food/drink etc.????
Clubs don't have the manpower to run canteens, so in come the contractors to do it. We see the exact same manner here at V8 and other car race events. The locals kept it fresh - heavens knows how old the stuff is that the "fly-by nighters" stock and carry.
Tell me Fortress - whats the deal at Brooky with manning canteens/kiosks etc. No doubt the Club runs the booth, if/when they are allowed to have it available.
Good subject posted by all. We should get a tribunal going here and thump the ear-holes of NRL Fat Cats.

They all line each others pockets & what happened at eels with the board of directors isn't the only club they all do it it's just eels got caught out but mark my words all cubs are doing it just as all players want to be paid more because it's never enough but give them the same job as a window cleaner or a retail shop worker & see how much they complain then I agree with mark they get paid way to much & the juniors would love to be paid a third of what the first graders get I mean how to pay a player $ 1 million when they haven't even played a game is crazy ...

Baggy Gee - the Parramatta Complex should be good and had to happen. The Cumberland Oval/Parramatta Stadium/Pirtek Stadium setup, had to be improved on, or lose West Sydney Wanderers FC (football/soccer).
I said it here last season, that Phil Gould was quoted as offering Penrith Park/Pepper Stadium for WS Wanderers home games, so they could be accommodated. I would have done the same, as that club certainly carries some supporters, even though I am a sky blues supporter. They've been around longer but Wanderers are built from the foundations of several of the former NSL Clubs like Marconi, Sydney United, Blacktown Demons,Yugal and yes they have a very loyal ethnic following. I don't mind seeing the flares and the colours, as long as its kept within means and no accidents occur from it.
I'd like to see St. George/Wollongong admitted in the next phase of increasing clubs or a St George/Sutherland Shire club. We are talking about the grass roots of early soccer in this country here.
If NRL doesn't look over its shoulder and scrap the salary cap - lookout for soccer and afl and even rugby union. Don't laugh - just look at what the rah rahs did with scoring some r/league players to their codes. Still hasn't been a lesson learnt. Yes folks and David Gallop has gone from NRL and now head of Aussie Soccer. Maybe he learnt his lesson and speaks another language with what you can do with funding $$$$$$$ and sponsorship support.
Gotta go - talk tonight or tomorrow. Out for dinner again......b/day teas.
Cheers - Big Pete

Afternoon Mark A.
What a score and that can happen in time, to many more with a top 8 being rich, happy and loaded with star players.
I felt for the Tigers, but not the ship-jumpers.
For one, if I was in the position - Woods would have had his haircut.
Reminds me so much of Raging Bull Robinson, Geoff did work much harder and his hair was thicker and tidier. Look what happened with Russell Fairfax and his locks. I've said that before this week.
This is part of cleaning the look of the game up. Oh c'mon civil liberty and equal rights whingers....throw your two-bobs worth in.
Ok, I wont pick on the players again because their recognisable tattoo's, are just as dirty.

Ummm….what? Cleaning the game up means Woods getting a hair-cut? Hmmm…at the risk of being labelled as an ‘civil liberties whinger’, I’m going to have a whinge about civil liberties!
Its not the army, man! These guys are not in prison. They’re not playing polo in front of the queen. They’re playing footy. Who gives a sh*t about their hair? I’m not watching a game of footy to get all emotional about their hair. If I want to do that, I’ll switch over to beach volleyball.
