Round seventeen selections

Parramatta Eels vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

For the Eels to win they simply have to match the Bulldogs up front. Luckily for them they faced a similar task in round 15 when they confronted that enormous Dragons forward pack. Now the Dragons came out on top in every major statistical measure in that game, except the most important one of all – the score. The Eels won that game and won it comfortably thanks to the kicking games of Norman and Moses, coupled with the fact that when they did get opportunities with the ball they knew how to convert them. On this front the Dragons failed, and on this front the Bulldogs have been failing for a while. The most points the Dogs have managed in a game this year is 24, and they haven't scored more than 20 since round seven. Their strength is up front, and their up-front is weakened by the absence of Graham and Eastwood. You can never say the Eels are rolled gold certainties, because they are one of those teams that can drift in and out of games, and occasionally not turn up at all. If they turn up, even for half of this contest, they should win. Cameron King gets a starting run (or is that a running start) at hooker for the Eels, replacing the ridiculously unlucky Kaysa Pritchard. Given I've been talking him up for a few years now I'll be watching his performance keenly. Good luck son.

Verdict – Eels by 10

Result – Eels by 1

Gold Coast Titans vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – Cbus Super Stadium

The Dragons jumped out of the blocks when season 2017 kicked off but they've been struggling for quite some time now. Since round 8 they have beaten just two teams, and those two teams are currently battling each other to avoid the wooden spoon. Both their wins over the Tigers and Knights were by four points. Since round 8 the Titans have also, in a happy coincidence, beaten those two teams. Importantly, the Titans victories were slightly more comprehensive (Knights by 30, Tigers by 12).  They've also beaten the Storm during that period, and there aren't many teams that can claim that scalp. Paul Vaughan is out with a calf injury and he's been close to the Dragons best. His absence evens out the forwards contest and the Titans are averaging more than 21 points a game in attack. The bookies can't split these two but I'm leaning to the home side.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result – Titans by 10

Brisbane Broncos vs Melbourne Storm – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Storm have been in very good form away from AAMI Park, but the second-placed Roosters did knock them off in golden point last weekend in Adelaide. While there is some doubt about Smith returning this Friday night, Cronk, Slater, Chambers and McLean should all be back. The Broncos soldier on without their captain (Boyd), and it looks like Bennett will be using Hunt off the bench in a utility role. These sides met back in round 3 and it was the Storm that prevailed in Melbourne by 14-12. While the scores were close it was the Storm that always looked the dominant side on the park – only an incredibly gallant and resiliant Broncos defence kept the scores as close as they were. The man who usually organises the Broncos goal-line defence (Boyd) isn't there, so Jordan Kahu has been handed quite the task there. The Broncos have lost just once at home all season (way back in round one) but the Storm have an extraordinary record (75% win rate) at this ground. The last time they played at this venue they actually lost (to the Titans) but I'm fairly confident they'll get the points this time. They didn't quite win last week but they aren't a side that lose two games in succession too often. If Smith plays its Storm by 8, and if he doesn't its...

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Storm by 30

Sydney Roosters vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday afternoon – Central Coast Stadium

Are the Sharks on the ropes? In games against poor opponents they've been falling over the line by narrow margins, and when they've played better opponents they've fallen short. Last week they were so short they wouldn't get a ride at a theme park. There's plenty of firepower in their backline and their goalkicker doesn't know how to miss, but they've scored just 100 points in their last six games, and a lot of those games were against some pretty average teams. Here they face the team running second, and a team that have scored 161 points during the same period. In round 14 the Roosters played the Tigers at Campbelltown and won 40-18. One week later the Tigers travelled to Sharkie Parkie and only just fell short. I expect the Sharks to improve after that humbling loss to the Sea Eagles last week but I certainly won't be tipping them.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Sharks by 32

Manly Sea Eagles vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – NIB Stadium

If you're going to take one of your home games away from home it makes perfect sense to ensure that your opponent is put out much more than you are – and so it goes that the Sea Eagles take their game against the New Zealand side to the West Coast of this enormous continent. Kieran Foran returns for the Warriors this weekend and there's no doubt this side has improved in recent weeks. Improved yes, but not enough to win this. The Sea Eagles have won 6 of their last 7, and their only loss was a competitive one to the Broncos at Suncorp. That's top four form frankly, and hardly anyone had the Sea Eagles pencilled in as a top four side this season.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 10

Result – Sea Eagles by 4

Canberra Raiders vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

So last week I was wrong about the Raiders and I was wrong about the Cowboys, and I was wrong suggesting the weather would beat the Broncos last weekend. Surely that just means I'm due to get something right? Right? Anyways I've had another look at this dismal Canberra weather and when this game kicks off there will be dog bowls in Canberra freezing over. I spent a fair chunk of time in Townsville and that's not the sort of weather people in Townsville get to experience too often. Bravo to the Cowboys with their win over the Panthers at home, but Canberra at this time of year is an entirely different planet. If the Raiders don't start performing soon Ricky Stuart will be on another planet too.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result – Cowboys by 13

Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium

This won't be the best game of NRL in round seventeen, but it could prove to be the most interesting. 15th plays 16th and the two points on offer could prove the difference and determine who needs to make room in the cutlery drawer. The Knights are actually the favourites and this could be the only time that happens all year. Will the pressure of expectation get to them? They've certainly competed almost every week and we can expect the same here, particularly at home on a Sunday afternoon. I just have a sneaky suspicion that the Tigers will be up for this game, and a win here gives them an opportunity to make some sort of statement. 'We beat the Knights' isn't much of a statement...but at least it says something. I'm with the Tigers, but I'm sure I'd enjoy this game a lot more if the Knights prevailed.

Verdict – Tigers by 2

Result – Tigers by 21

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

These sides met back in round six and it was the Bunnies that prevailed by a single point. Take note that back then the Panthers were without Moylan, Mansour and Peachey. Since that game (in round six) the Bunnies have won just the once...against the Tigers. Meanwhile the Panthers have won four of their last five and went down narrowly to the Cowboys in Townsville last weekend. Sam Burgess is a welcome return for the Rabbits and this Panthers pack will need to bring their boots, but I'm keen on the black cats and $1.65 looks fair shopping to me. Panther responsibly.

Verdict – Panthers by 10

Result – Rabbitohs by 28

Good evening all
Tips in early this week. But remember a fool rushes in where wise men fear to tread.
Tips are from the heart and maybe not from the head.
Just been enjoying a feed of whiting and sand crab from a neighbours fishing trip.
Washed down with a glass or two of Sauv Blanc.
Will no doubt explain my tips when the real results are in.

Baggy_Gee's picture

If that's your excuse for a rough round then I'd give up the tipping and enjoy the meal. Sounds like a lovely meal on a mild winters night. Slow cooked stew and dumplings here beside the wood fire.

I feel we are looking at a storm / roosters grand final ...

Not if the might eagles have anything to do with it Christine we are playing above anyones expectations mate and Phil Gould I'm his column the other day paid a glowing tribute to them he said quote a serious contender and threat for the title,he always said that Trent Barrett is so far coach of the year, there magnificent thrashing of the defending premires was stunning and we are now in the top 4 who would of thought ,but I always belived in my club gutsy, powerful, skillfully brilliant there attack and defence on song even the sharks coach paid tribute to the mighty eagles saying that on that form they would win the comp, its along way to go i know but we down here in gods country have this magic feeling and no matter happens I an so proud of my team and club the magnificent the never say die attitude the spirit of the mighty manly warringah sea eagles!!!!!!!!!

Were back baby yeeeeeeeeeh

Russell's picture

I think Manly will go a long way this year, however I was watching 360 last night and they mentioned that Manly may have a depth problem, so I guess if all players can stay on the park they will do well

Baggy_Gee's picture

And it will be a test of their mental strength Russell. Sometime an injury breaks a teams spirit as well as the depth, we'll see how they do in Perth this weekend to assess the impact of Sironans out.

christine's picture

Fortress I did not for one minute say manly isn't doing well infact I would say if any team was going to throw a spanner in the works to there being a storm / roosters grand final it is manly but I have to wonder how roosters will still play to the same level now they have off loaded the players they have recently

Sa-wat-dee krup,

Thursday night kick-offs are back again this week so let’s get into it…

Eels - Baggy’s BOYS have won 3 of their last 4 whereas the Doggies have only managed the one. The Eels had a nice win against the Dragons and have now had the last 2 weeks resting up. The Doggies are plain average at the moment and I get the impression they’re finding it hard (or have forgotten how) to capitalise on their opportunities. The Slippery Ones for me.

Titans - Yes, the Dragons did win last week but they had to come from behind against the Knights to do it. Doesn’t engender a lot of faith I’d have to say. What effect will Vaughan being missing have on them? The Titans had a comfortable 12 point win against the Tigers last week and weren’t too shabby from what I saw. That’s good enough for me so I’ll be tipping the Titans in this one.

Storm - Looks like the Storm will be getting back Smith, Cronk and Slater while the Ponies are still without Milford and Boyd. Must admit Storm were a tad unlucky last week against my BBB considering who they had missing. Add in the returning 3 already mentioned plus their impressive away record and Newbie has to go the Storm Troopers here. Didn’t realise the Storm have won the last 6 straight against the Ponies at Suncorp. Sheesh!

Roosters - I watched last week’s game between the Sharks and Manly and even though I tipped Manly, I thought the Sharks would’ve put on a better show than they did. Have they gone off the boil or was it simply post-origin tiredness? I’m a bit worried by the fact that the Sharks have beaten my BBB in our past 5 matches though. Then again, winning runs always come to an end sooner or later don’t they. I’m banking on my BBB to carry on from last week and get up in a potential thriller here. Begurk! Begurk!

Manly - Fortress, can anyone stop this Manly roll? They’ll be playing over here in Perth and if my memory serves me correctly, they do pretty well when running around NIB. They should be a lot fresher than the poor ol’ Warriors too. What a horror road trip that is eh? Add the fact that the Warriors have lost in all 5 appearances here and the tip gets a whole lot clearer. Manly were just too impressive last week for me not to tip ‘em. They should get the job done fairly easily for Mr Fortress.

Cowboys - I’m still a firm believer that the Cowboys can win games without JT. That was proven last week. The Raiders have lost three games in a row and seem to missing that certain something. Weighing up the relevant recent form, I see a bit more “merit” in the Cowboys form. The boys from Dodge City for me. Giddy Up!

Knights - The Knights have been playing some decent footy of late and even though I tipped against them last week, I wouldn’t have minded seeing them get up over the Dragons. One of those things I suppose. The Tigers never looked like threatening last week but I think Tedesco is coming back this week (not sure) so that might help. Mind you, they’re not scoring a lot of points in their games lately and that has me thinking. The Knights have been knocking on the door for a long time now and have been unlucky a couple of times too. I reckon the door will open this week. Shine up the armour all you Knights fans, Newbie is tipping your guys to get up this week.

Rabbitohs - Poor ol’ Penrith must’ve been gutted by last week’s result. Now they have to front a Bunnies side fresh from 2 weeks off and a returning Sam Burgess. I like how they played against the Ponies at Suncorp and their win against the Titans before the bye. I’ll tip the Fluffy Ones (especially given their record against the Panthers at ANZ) to round off the weekend’s games.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.

P.S. Could crop-circles be the work of a cereal killer? Hmmm…

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Eels by 2- This will be a great clash between these two rivals. Eels to win in a close one. Bulldogs will play tough and gritty I reckon but the Eels to prevail though.

Dragons by 8- We escaped last week. An escaping, comeback win against the Knights. Glad McCrone in on the bench in this one. He has being playing horrible for us. Hopefully Mann can play well in the halfback position. Give him time and watch him gel well with Widdop. Sad to see Vaughan out though. I think that we will beat the Titans here with Widdop steering the side to victory.

Storm by 4- Storm too good here. They'll be too classy for the Broncos here. It'll be close.

Roosters by 10- Roosters too strong for the Sharks here.

Sea Eagles by 14- Geez, Manly are in magnificent form. They'll continue it with a big win over the Warriors here.

Raiders by 1- Raiders in golden point. Cowboys will miss Thurston here I believe when they need him most. I would love the Raiders to get back to their exciting brand of football and defending tough as well. The cold will get to the Cowboys I reckon.

Knights by 8- Battle of the bottom teams. Knights showed why they have improved so much last week in the first half. They'll carry that to this week where they'll beat the Tigers.

And finally... Panthers by 10- Panthers too good here. It'll be good to see the Rabbits win though to continue on their form.

Awesome. Good luck with everyone's tips for this week and with everyone's teams for this week. Cheers!!!!!!!

Eels won in golden point

Baggy_Gee's picture

Still doesn't lessen the need. But two points is two points. Not happy Jan!!

christine's picture

Spartan warrior we are your tips you didn't get them in ?

mark ashford's picture

Bulldogs are a team playing dirty football, always trying to hurt opposition instead of playing footy.
Very happy to see the Eels beat them in golden point.
Hasler was a grub of a player (sorry manly) and he's taken it to his coaching. Really hope they get the spoon, you know the wooden one.

Spartan Warrior's picture

Greetings from the Spartan Warrior,
Sorry for my tardiness Lady Christine, I have been engaging myself in new english classes of the evening.Yea,this is so that I may communicate better to thee all. I am refraining from my old english literature to better assist myself with the modernisation. Have you noticed the improvement?
Round 17 tips from TSW

Certainly easier (and quicker) to read Spartan Warrior. The old English literature always took me back to the days of studying Shakespeare at High School - not necessarily my fondest memory! Good to see you still commenting. Cheers.

Fortress's picture

By the way down at the club i was informed that sirro may return a lot sooner than people think he is not out for the year so that's the news he is young fit and strong and like tommy turbo will be back.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Thanks Mary, but don't worry about it. Water off a ducks back. But if possible could you just call me Baggy please.

a's picture

It's okay we can all get a little passionate about our team but just don't step the line like you know who

Mary S's picture

No problem Baggy.

Baggy_Gee's picture

So Mary, think the Cows can go 2 from 2 with out Thurston? Shouldn't be that hard as there were quite a few players who put their hand up and did the job last week.

Baggy_Gee's picture

'A' that's where you are wrong, there is passion and then the is vitriol. The former is to be praised, the latter condemned. And the above is the latter.

Fortress's picture

And by the way Mary is because I'm a passionate mighty eagles supporter that I stand up for myself that I go on and on that's what the big game is all about giving it the best u can and I can't help that his team is inept maybe he should support someone else instead of bagging out the champion clubs this is rugby league passion spirit guts its not lawn bowls fair dinkum !!!!!!!

Spartan Warrior's picture

Greetings from the Spartan Warrior,
Master Fortress, there was an obscure quote that I recall: Sweet talks has the ability to attract one and all. On the contrary, hurtful speech keeps people away.
Aye Master Fortress, The Spartan Warrior knows much of war, it can be a tiring fruitless venture. Words can inflict greater pain than a steel blade of thy sword. A sword can inflict a wound, the wound will heal with a scar. Words callously thrown, can be replayed in one’s memory for many years later and with some, for an eternity. Yea, the old saying of sticks and stones may break my bones and words can never hurt you is only a half truth. Sticks and stones can do the physical damage yet the anguish that words can inflict is far greater than you can imagine.
So Master Fortress, enjoy the success of your great club and equally enjoy them when the success also wanes, but seek not words that may hurt another, seek armistice.
The Spartan Warrior has spoken.

Mary S's picture

Certainly hope the Cows can go through for a win tomorrow night Baggy. The team are certainly going to miss JT and his innate ability to read and feed the play, but like every other team in the comp, there are other good players on the field too. The Cowboys might need to play hard to overcome the bitter cold of Canberra as well as the Raiders!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

As long as they attack hard and keep the Raiders on the back foot they shouldn't mind the cold, its when all you do is defend does the cold creep deep in and freeze the mind and body, same as the rain, you don't notice it until all you do is pick yourself out of the mud, rub it out of your eyes as you try to keep an eye on your man and the ball. They can do it, Great player JT is/was its time for someone to pick up his mantle.
