Round seventeen selections

Parramatta Eels vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

For the Eels to win they simply have to match the Bulldogs up front. Luckily for them they faced a similar task in round 15 when they confronted that enormous Dragons forward pack. Now the Dragons came out on top in every major statistical measure in that game, except the most important one of all – the score. The Eels won that game and won it comfortably thanks to the kicking games of Norman and Moses, coupled with the fact that when they did get opportunities with the ball they knew how to convert them. On this front the Dragons failed, and on this front the Bulldogs have been failing for a while. The most points the Dogs have managed in a game this year is 24, and they haven't scored more than 20 since round seven. Their strength is up front, and their up-front is weakened by the absence of Graham and Eastwood. You can never say the Eels are rolled gold certainties, because they are one of those teams that can drift in and out of games, and occasionally not turn up at all. If they turn up, even for half of this contest, they should win. Cameron King gets a starting run (or is that a running start) at hooker for the Eels, replacing the ridiculously unlucky Kaysa Pritchard. Given I've been talking him up for a few years now I'll be watching his performance keenly. Good luck son.

Verdict – Eels by 10

Result – Eels by 1

Gold Coast Titans vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – Cbus Super Stadium

The Dragons jumped out of the blocks when season 2017 kicked off but they've been struggling for quite some time now. Since round 8 they have beaten just two teams, and those two teams are currently battling each other to avoid the wooden spoon. Both their wins over the Tigers and Knights were by four points. Since round 8 the Titans have also, in a happy coincidence, beaten those two teams. Importantly, the Titans victories were slightly more comprehensive (Knights by 30, Tigers by 12).  They've also beaten the Storm during that period, and there aren't many teams that can claim that scalp. Paul Vaughan is out with a calf injury and he's been close to the Dragons best. His absence evens out the forwards contest and the Titans are averaging more than 21 points a game in attack. The bookies can't split these two but I'm leaning to the home side.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result – Titans by 10

Brisbane Broncos vs Melbourne Storm – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Storm have been in very good form away from AAMI Park, but the second-placed Roosters did knock them off in golden point last weekend in Adelaide. While there is some doubt about Smith returning this Friday night, Cronk, Slater, Chambers and McLean should all be back. The Broncos soldier on without their captain (Boyd), and it looks like Bennett will be using Hunt off the bench in a utility role. These sides met back in round 3 and it was the Storm that prevailed in Melbourne by 14-12. While the scores were close it was the Storm that always looked the dominant side on the park – only an incredibly gallant and resiliant Broncos defence kept the scores as close as they were. The man who usually organises the Broncos goal-line defence (Boyd) isn't there, so Jordan Kahu has been handed quite the task there. The Broncos have lost just once at home all season (way back in round one) but the Storm have an extraordinary record (75% win rate) at this ground. The last time they played at this venue they actually lost (to the Titans) but I'm fairly confident they'll get the points this time. They didn't quite win last week but they aren't a side that lose two games in succession too often. If Smith plays its Storm by 8, and if he doesn't its...

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Storm by 30

Sydney Roosters vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday afternoon – Central Coast Stadium

Are the Sharks on the ropes? In games against poor opponents they've been falling over the line by narrow margins, and when they've played better opponents they've fallen short. Last week they were so short they wouldn't get a ride at a theme park. There's plenty of firepower in their backline and their goalkicker doesn't know how to miss, but they've scored just 100 points in their last six games, and a lot of those games were against some pretty average teams. Here they face the team running second, and a team that have scored 161 points during the same period. In round 14 the Roosters played the Tigers at Campbelltown and won 40-18. One week later the Tigers travelled to Sharkie Parkie and only just fell short. I expect the Sharks to improve after that humbling loss to the Sea Eagles last week but I certainly won't be tipping them.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Sharks by 32

Manly Sea Eagles vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – NIB Stadium

If you're going to take one of your home games away from home it makes perfect sense to ensure that your opponent is put out much more than you are – and so it goes that the Sea Eagles take their game against the New Zealand side to the West Coast of this enormous continent. Kieran Foran returns for the Warriors this weekend and there's no doubt this side has improved in recent weeks. Improved yes, but not enough to win this. The Sea Eagles have won 6 of their last 7, and their only loss was a competitive one to the Broncos at Suncorp. That's top four form frankly, and hardly anyone had the Sea Eagles pencilled in as a top four side this season.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 10

Result – Sea Eagles by 4

Canberra Raiders vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

So last week I was wrong about the Raiders and I was wrong about the Cowboys, and I was wrong suggesting the weather would beat the Broncos last weekend. Surely that just means I'm due to get something right? Right? Anyways I've had another look at this dismal Canberra weather and when this game kicks off there will be dog bowls in Canberra freezing over. I spent a fair chunk of time in Townsville and that's not the sort of weather people in Townsville get to experience too often. Bravo to the Cowboys with their win over the Panthers at home, but Canberra at this time of year is an entirely different planet. If the Raiders don't start performing soon Ricky Stuart will be on another planet too.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result – Cowboys by 13

Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium

This won't be the best game of NRL in round seventeen, but it could prove to be the most interesting. 15th plays 16th and the two points on offer could prove the difference and determine who needs to make room in the cutlery drawer. The Knights are actually the favourites and this could be the only time that happens all year. Will the pressure of expectation get to them? They've certainly competed almost every week and we can expect the same here, particularly at home on a Sunday afternoon. I just have a sneaky suspicion that the Tigers will be up for this game, and a win here gives them an opportunity to make some sort of statement. 'We beat the Knights' isn't much of a statement...but at least it says something. I'm with the Tigers, but I'm sure I'd enjoy this game a lot more if the Knights prevailed.

Verdict – Tigers by 2

Result – Tigers by 21

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

These sides met back in round six and it was the Bunnies that prevailed by a single point. Take note that back then the Panthers were without Moylan, Mansour and Peachey. Since that game (in round six) the Bunnies have won just the once...against the Tigers. Meanwhile the Panthers have won four of their last five and went down narrowly to the Cowboys in Townsville last weekend. Sam Burgess is a welcome return for the Rabbits and this Panthers pack will need to bring their boots, but I'm keen on the black cats and $1.65 looks fair shopping to me. Panther responsibly.

Verdict – Panthers by 10

Result – Rabbitohs by 28

Wally Lewis - round seventeen selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • EELS vs Bulldogs
  • TITANS vs Dragons
  • Broncos vs STORM
  • ROOSTERS vs Sharks
  • SEA EAGLES vs Warriors
  • RAIDERS vs Cowboys
  • KNIGHTS vs Tigers
  • Rabbitohs vs PANTHERS

Just for my quids worth, Nathan Brown should get coach of the year ahead on Trent Barett. He's turn his team around, they are pushing teams instead of having cricket scores racked up on them I.e. they only lost to Manly by 2, and all they seem to be missing is some senior leadership on the park. That half back who got thrown outfit drugs would have provided that. They will scare a few more teams before the end of the year.

Rocket Ryan's picture

As a broncos fan I want Hunt to play not sure what has been going on in Wayne's mind but we need him in the side from now on. A couple of wingers who can mark their man would he handy, although we were not as good in defence last night as we have come to expect.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Fortress, I have always questioned "great" coaches. People rate Mal as a great coach but he had an incredible group of players. Look at John Bucanhan during that golden period of Australian cricket, he is rated on his playing group. The reason I rate Nathan Brown over Trent Barrett is on the basis that Dane Gagai is the only real big star of the team and he is getting great performance out of his young group, Trent has an established leadership group of players who have multiple years in the NRL. Trent is in the same boat as Ricky was at the Roosters, came into an established team with a consistent playing group. He has yet to do the hard rebuilding years.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I understand the Wayne thing Ryan, it's like us picking Moses up mid year. If he doesn't want to be on the bus then it makes sense, but Hunt has been delivering even though he is off to the Dragons so I would include him as long as he keeps putting in. If he drops off then punt him back to QLD cup or lower.

Hoping a fellow poster has enough rope to hang himself & calling the poster a retard who needs help & has mental issues are definitely two of the worst comments I have seen in the six years I've been on this site. We don't want or need this here & sadly it's spoiling what is a great place to visit, have some fun and talk footy.

Fortress's picture

Like i said all in the family first we had dad coach potoato his gone now we have mum Mary s and now the brother steel panther were in my post am I wrong who in there right full mind would give it to a coach about to win the wooden spoon gosh than u or anyone else could coach them and do a better job.

Once again baggy pants ur wrong Trent has bought along discards from other clubs some like utae who lost form and confidence he had to in still this into a lot of his players look how we started the year but to turn that around and from last year and to turn us into a premiership force is nothing short of magnificent look baggy pants me and everyone on here know u hate manly that's a gimmie to know OK but to tell me that brown has only one good player and the fact they sit close to last and the fact they are trying and the fact that my club sits in 3rd on the ladder with no one giving us a hope in hell of making the 8 let alone a premiership threat,I would have to say that this all adds up to the fact that u hate manly just sat it the results don't lie the ladder doesn't lie its plain simple fact and not u or your dad or your mum or your brother on this site will never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever change my mind or opinion of what is going on here u want me off here and ur suporrting act steel panther both of u were big vocal supporters of spud head and please don't tell me u were not and now because defending my club and myself the both of u want to discredit me and have me chucked off well the both of u should know one thing if that was to happen I'm not the only manly supporter u will have to deal with try manly in general so the both of u grow up face facts and stop trying to make me out to be this bad person which I am not I am defending my club and myself just like anyone else who has the passion and the guts to defend there club !!!!!!!!!!!

I will never ever bend my back or be someone who I am not or talk garbage in truth that is not based on fact !!!!!!

The fortress !!!!!!!

Proud to be a mighty eagle!!!!!!

At the end of the day we all on a great site

Baggy_Gee's picture

It will be a good game between the cellar dwellers, and I really do believe that Nathan Brown is a far better Coach than some others in the game. It is all about if you can get the players to play for you, and he has done that, others on that list do include Wayne, Craig, Shane, they all have teams playing for them. But what do I know?
The Gronk signing out.
Can see shades of grey.
Hoo Rah.

Yes 'a' we are mate, and ur the voice of reason buddy its just a shame that us passionate supporters are put down people trying to mute us so they feel better for them selves what I say is fact its what's going on that's like saying last years grand final between the broncs and cows was not a classic of course it was it was an epic that's like saying a club who hasn't won a title in 40 years has a great record of course they don't,that's like saying that us the successful clubs are team blame for the clubs who are not so hey every club goes out there and gives it there best but why not give credit where its due the mighty eagles were never picked in the top 8 by any expert none mate let alone top 4 I'm proud of them so why is there 2 people on here that can say or do as they please I'll tell you the answer 'a' its because I'm a manly supporter and I think u know that mate anyways enjoy ur nite a and good luck tobyour cows did weekend and I can see u tipped the mighty eagles very good tip I might say !!!!!!

Fortress's picture

Funny that so the manly boys arnt playing for Trent fair dinkum where did this bloke that supports whats the matter come from struth !!!!!

And can anyone tell me what has nathan brown ever achieved in footy player or coach in the NRL he is an average coach that is coaching an average team that is trying there best but with a better coach and o couple of more experienced players or stars they will prosper fair dinkum how hard is that to know !!!!!!!;

a's picture

Thanks Fortress I appreciate your support

Mary S's picture

Hi Steel Panther

You do have an interesting solution for the petulant child that runs off at the mouth at times. He is very determined to deal in facts and truth yet I see I am now ‘mum’ and you are ‘brother’ and therefore related to Baggy in some way. I too, have enjoyed this sight for a number of years and will continue to do so. Perhaps as previously suggested, we need to ignore the disparaging remarks and let it slide” like water off a duck’s back”.

I get that he is extremely passionate about his club Manly and applaud his enthusiasm, but to the extent that it appears more like road rage is of concern.

Now to footy -How do you think Warriors will go in Perth steel panther? It is a big ask after the long travel involved in getting there and Manly have certainly indicated they are seriously on the comeback trail.

Cheers and enjoy the rest of your weekend and whatever footy matches you are able to watch.

Fortress's picture

Mary s u have just recently joined this site if u think ur mate baggy pants is so great well then good on you I tend to differ who the hell are you or him or steel panther to tell me or anyone on this site how to behave so he is so perfect is he look at the comments you have levelled at me so u think that's OK calling me a child saying that I have road rage or is it that I just love my club and defending myself against the hate levelled at my club and me.

So Mary u would give coach of the year to a bloke who is about to win the wooden spoon would u so what is that saying to the rest that its a great achievement to come last ur team has come last but its OK will give u coach of the year for trying come on what tripe.

And u mean to tell me that the manly boys arnt playing for there coach Trent Barrett come on what tripe

Did u have the mighty eagles in the top 4 before before the year started of course u didn't.

So u see that's what ur good mate baggy pants has been so ineptly saying defend him as much as u like but I tell u something ur only defending one thing and that is hate jealousy and plain old fashioned stupidity.

That's not road rage Mary just plain old common sence .

Cheers and enjoy ur evening !!!!!!

Fortress
I've been away from the "puter" for a bit and as requested I've gone back to Baggy's comments.
Fair dinkum mate I can't see where he has bagged your Eagles??
Sure he didn't rapp your victory over the Sharks last week but neither did you offer congrats on his win over the Dogs Thursday night.
Talk about "Coach of the year" is a bit premature. There are plenty of rounds to go and who knows who'll be there.
Fortress you know I admire Manly's success so far this year but I also think the Eels are knocking on the door.
Let's all just, be supportive, positive and respectful.
Being a Broncs supporter the loss last night hurt but wasn't unexpected.
Storm have a great record against the Broncs since 2006 when the Broncs beat them in the grand final.

mark ashford's picture

Fortress
I think that's enough mate.
I abhorred Coach's attack on Christine last year it was unforgivable and totally unnecessary.
You are doing the same to Mary S.
Don't you remember how Coach attacked you?
You didn't like it so why do the same to an innocent Mary S.
I think you are loosing credibility Fortress.

Steel Panther's picture

Hi Mary S or should I just call you Mum...haha.

Ive just watched the game & Warriors got a lot closer than I thought they would but at the end if the day Manly just too good.

That's the Warriors no wins from nine starts in Perth. Happy to see Manly win as that's me tipped 5 from 5 so far.

Now it's Canberra v Cowboys!!
Take care

a's picture

Well done Fortress for the win I tipped Manly so I'm happy now go Cowboys

Fortress's picture

Manly the magnificent down 16-0 with guts skill and determination we win again the trys in the first half on our way to our comeback was breathtaking.

Hats off to the warriors they played well and it was a stunning game of football.this is why I love my footy this is why I love my team and this is why Trent barrett is the coach of the year and this is why the mighty eagles are the story of the year.

What a great game of footy by both teams and the mighty eagles continue there quest for another title.

If passion on this site is a sin if loving ur club is a sin well maybe those people who think sobshoukd not be following the greatest game of all.

Wishing everyone a very good evening from a very excited and stunned fortress eagle!!!!!!!

Cowboys are doing alright at the moment keep up the good work Cowboys

Well done Cowboys for winning 2 from 2 without Thruston

BigPeteBx's picture

Evenin Fortress - how are things going, or should I ask.
I've been a bit absent lately, lots on.
The boys won alright, but not without a last chance holdout.
Four points nothing for us to skite about, as Warriors only needed a converted try and we were doomed. But again, we stuck to our digs.
A win is a win though.

@Pabdul is laying low and might have just dug a deeper hole to lay in.
Who would have seen Sharks do a turnaround from last week and do the same to The Chooks, as what we did to them.

@Awesome J - what the hell is happening to Raiders in a bitterly cold Canberra. Aren't they able to win any more, in freezing conditions. We got minus 7 here this morning and plumbers doing a roaring trade with burst pipes. I've experienced minus 10 here in earlier days. Winter not half over yet.......anything is possible.

@a - credit to Cowboys mate. They conquered tonight.

Mary S's picture

Evening 'a'. Cowboys have come through with great result tonight (31 - 18) - far more than I hoped for. Great night!!!!!!!

Fell asleep and got up well done "a' on your great victory in Canberra they are proving there is life after jt he will be back champions always fight back mate.

Big Pete buddy we were down 16-0 firstly we had to erase the deficit and we did that with magnificently excuted trys in second half badger decided to forget manly some of his decions were mind boggling to say the least but we kicked away then like terriors we defended our line to win I really can't see for the life of me how that wasn't a magnicent win in a stunning game mate i really worried mate now please buddy don't take this the wrong way u are a great manly man u have my full respect but I feel that the hate from 2 posters has put a curse on you come on mate fair dinkum we are in the top 3 celebrate there magnificent rise instead of this negative comments we are the mighty eagles it was a great win and we fought back to claim victory the kiwis also played well and sometimes u have to tough out victory can't win by 50 every weekend take care buddy and stay with the passion and the postive.

Mark asford u as well have my respect mate but I have to say I think that ur misunderstanding my posts just stating fact to be hounest with u mark if I was running this site there would be some on here that would be lucky to earn there stripes we all belong but i feel that a few on here don't understand the game really and what its about footy is more than just kicking and passing the ball u must have that inner passion that inner desire that incredible will to win and that's the same with been a supporter and unfournatly mark we have 2 on here that lack this I'm sorry but they are negitive and for god sake u can feel the hate when stating fact its not about who we love or hate its about what's happened in front of us for example I don't like the storm but that does not mean they are not a champion club i really think for some its hard to understand fact even when its staring at them in the face the resaults don't lie the ladder does not lie and history's records don't lie so for one person on here for me in my humble opinion he basses his facts on things that are not happining its as if he is watching a different sport and if people can't see this well then go ahead and support him that's fine only I can so why shouldn't I like him form an opinion of his lack of understand of the game of rugby leauge.

But mark ashford ur not one of those people u have passion wit a desire and passion and a strong understanding of the inner side of the game and that is not an easy thing to have it has to be in you if u have it u have it if u don't well u just don't and u my good friend have it.

Pabdul I've missed u like crazy ur mob will be back mate keep up ur humor buddy and keep up the power and the passion

Well its back to bed wishing u all a great weekend and may the football gods smile upon you !!!!!!

Johnny Awesome's picture

Good morning all,
Went to the game last night with my daughter. Watched the under 20’s and Mounties play. As a Saints [one] man and Canberra [second], was happy if either the Mounties or the Cutters won. As it stood, the Cutters deserved their win. Big Pete, there was over 10000 of us who came out for Canberra. Mate I grew up in the central west and don’t mind the cold, but my kids and wife are different. Anyway I wrapped up Bubby Loo in two of my jackets, two of my blankets, a picnic rug and she was still shivering, so I had to hold her for the night as well. The point I’m making is that fans like us made an effortto come but sadly only half of the Raiders team did. It’s just not good enough and I’m glad Ricky has finally had an interview that was honest enough admitting that as well. The first 5 mins of the game was the only time as spectators that we could cheer about really, from then on, it was all North Qld. I’m never dirty on Canberra if they put in but get beaten by a better side, but fair dinkum last night wasn’t a good display of that. Being realistic, Canberra’s season is effectively over, they’ll beat my Saints in two weeks’ time, because that’s what Saints do best, help get teams back in form whilst they drop off themselves. It’s a hard life following Saints and Canberra but that’s what true supporters do, follow their club regardless.
Also Christine and others, just wanted to let you know that my daughter is managing her time at school better with the bullying. She’s getting a lot of support from the staff and actually some other people I didn’t expect and that has surprised me. Just recently, she performed in Kulture Break’s dance nation and they’ve been a terrific support as well. I was talking to Francis the founder of KB the other day and he remembers when we became friends 15 years ago and part of KB and Bubby Loo was still in her pram. If any of you are interested, google Kulture Break, it’s come along way and is finally receiving well-earned support from the government as well.
Cheers all from Mr Awesome.

Mary S's picture

Hi Mr Awesome,
Canberra is a beautiful city but can be so, so cold, as I found when visiting relations there in the past.
As a Cowboys fan, I am ecstatic they won last night as there has been so much media on “life without JT’, but I also sympathise with you, and other posters, when the team you support passionately, does not deliver the goods. Raiders have had some good wins this season and were certainly favourites to win the game last night.

On your other news – so pleased to hear that your daughter is getting the support she needs at school. It is never easy to find the right path to combat bullying. I googled Kulture Break and watched their break dance at Erindale (on YouTube) – they are good. Do hope your daughter continues to enjoy association with them.
All the best.

Ah Rocket, how wrong you were, the cowboys are showing plenty of ticker without both captains. Good win by the Boys Mary and a. Thinker, have you got any idea on what is going on with the dragons at the moment?????

ive been really busy with a new job which entails alot more than i signed up for. also i have a pain down my leg and my doc thinks its a sciatic nerve problem ct scan on Tuesday. i did a robert palmer and asked the doctor to give me the news and he said i need to change and lose some weight so for the last week ive been doing a normie rowe and shakin all over. im on the manshake and 4kgs down after a week with 16 to go. been catchin up with the comments i didnt see many from pete he might be on the mo shake. ashford stay brutally honest. fortress you dont need that crap just point to the ladder and mary calling baggy baggy pants was madness.
baggy you remind me of batfink..u cant hurt me my wings are a shield of steel.
also A thanks mate that was a fun comp.

a's picture

Yeah it was a fun comp

Baggy_Gee's picture

Johnny, wow, you and your family really are awesome to brave those conditions. Nice to hear that there was a good turn out as well. I'm with you on the BOYS putting in the effort and losing, that's why I'm still ropeable about Thursday night. If the Dogs had played well enough to come back it wouldn't have been only a 10 point half to them, so we played well enough to stem the bleeding but rubbish enough that we couldn't score even one lousy point ourselves. GAH. But here's hoping that Brad and Ricky get the flogging sticks out and readjust the attitudes.

Pabdul, was worried for a sec, I thought the doc was going to diagnose you with a bad case of the loves. But 4kgs is great and hope it eases the pain. But I think that you might not be a fan of the bat, more of the Mark Hamil character.

pabdul's picture

might as well face it im addicted to league.

The Thinker's picture

Kudos to Johnny Awesome and his daughter for getting to that game in Canberra last night. The two of you are made of stronger stuff than I.

Fortress,

Your passion for the Sea Eagles is welcomed, but I'm drawing a line with some of your comments directed at other people here. They have been removed or edited.

People are allowed to have different views to you and they should be free to share them here, just as you are free to share them here. Calling someone a retard or suggesting someone should hang themselves just because they have a different point of view to yours is just not on. The internet is full of places where you can talk to people like that – but not here.

Eagles are flying high right now. They are surprising just about everyone.....enjoy the ride.

Baggy_Gee's picture

The side to side, it isn't forward, the passes are just so flat. The kicks, to the wing, bring tries that can't be stopped.

MickP's picture

Hi Thinker, are you still tipping the tigers over knights when Tedesco is ruled out?

The Thinker's picture

MickP

Apologies for the late replay....kicking off soon.

Quite a lot of team changes since I tipped the Tigers but I'll stick with them. I'm not remotely conifdent though.

christine's picture

Johnny awesome I haven't been keeping up on the comments posted lately but i'm glad to hear your daughter is doing better at school with the bullying situation & Thinker without actually spelling it out well said we are all entitled to our own opinions even if someone doesn't agree with it ...

Been trawling through all the QLD SoO reps since the boss play -4 SoO games according to wiki, Wally apparently played 38. Just found out that Robbie O'davis played 12, didn't realise that he had so long in two football. Miss him, with his drug habit taken away he was quite a good player.

Rick & lillychino congratulations on getting 10 points in the A game comp I tipped knights today & as you can tell I won't be joining you on 10 points with the way this game is unfolding so I will have my first strike by the end of this game ...

Sadly you have keep track of what is happening next week

I did "a" but I either took eels this week to beat bulldogs or knights to beat tigers they were the only options I had available to me to take now next week I would only have bulldogs or knights or eels over storm so such as life I did all right considering I did make it to 9 points without a strike ...
