Round seventeen selections

Parramatta Eels vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

For the Eels to win they simply have to match the Bulldogs up front. Luckily for them they faced a similar task in round 15 when they confronted that enormous Dragons forward pack. Now the Dragons came out on top in every major statistical measure in that game, except the most important one of all – the score. The Eels won that game and won it comfortably thanks to the kicking games of Norman and Moses, coupled with the fact that when they did get opportunities with the ball they knew how to convert them. On this front the Dragons failed, and on this front the Bulldogs have been failing for a while. The most points the Dogs have managed in a game this year is 24, and they haven't scored more than 20 since round seven. Their strength is up front, and their up-front is weakened by the absence of Graham and Eastwood. You can never say the Eels are rolled gold certainties, because they are one of those teams that can drift in and out of games, and occasionally not turn up at all. If they turn up, even for half of this contest, they should win. Cameron King gets a starting run (or is that a running start) at hooker for the Eels, replacing the ridiculously unlucky Kaysa Pritchard. Given I've been talking him up for a few years now I'll be watching his performance keenly. Good luck son.

Verdict – Eels by 10

Result – Eels by 1

Gold Coast Titans vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – Cbus Super Stadium

The Dragons jumped out of the blocks when season 2017 kicked off but they've been struggling for quite some time now. Since round 8 they have beaten just two teams, and those two teams are currently battling each other to avoid the wooden spoon. Both their wins over the Tigers and Knights were by four points. Since round 8 the Titans have also, in a happy coincidence, beaten those two teams. Importantly, the Titans victories were slightly more comprehensive (Knights by 30, Tigers by 12).  They've also beaten the Storm during that period, and there aren't many teams that can claim that scalp. Paul Vaughan is out with a calf injury and he's been close to the Dragons best. His absence evens out the forwards contest and the Titans are averaging more than 21 points a game in attack. The bookies can't split these two but I'm leaning to the home side.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result – Titans by 10

Brisbane Broncos vs Melbourne Storm – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Storm have been in very good form away from AAMI Park, but the second-placed Roosters did knock them off in golden point last weekend in Adelaide. While there is some doubt about Smith returning this Friday night, Cronk, Slater, Chambers and McLean should all be back. The Broncos soldier on without their captain (Boyd), and it looks like Bennett will be using Hunt off the bench in a utility role. These sides met back in round 3 and it was the Storm that prevailed in Melbourne by 14-12. While the scores were close it was the Storm that always looked the dominant side on the park – only an incredibly gallant and resiliant Broncos defence kept the scores as close as they were. The man who usually organises the Broncos goal-line defence (Boyd) isn't there, so Jordan Kahu has been handed quite the task there. The Broncos have lost just once at home all season (way back in round one) but the Storm have an extraordinary record (75% win rate) at this ground. The last time they played at this venue they actually lost (to the Titans) but I'm fairly confident they'll get the points this time. They didn't quite win last week but they aren't a side that lose two games in succession too often. If Smith plays its Storm by 8, and if he doesn't its...

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Storm by 30

Sydney Roosters vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday afternoon – Central Coast Stadium

Are the Sharks on the ropes? In games against poor opponents they've been falling over the line by narrow margins, and when they've played better opponents they've fallen short. Last week they were so short they wouldn't get a ride at a theme park. There's plenty of firepower in their backline and their goalkicker doesn't know how to miss, but they've scored just 100 points in their last six games, and a lot of those games were against some pretty average teams. Here they face the team running second, and a team that have scored 161 points during the same period. In round 14 the Roosters played the Tigers at Campbelltown and won 40-18. One week later the Tigers travelled to Sharkie Parkie and only just fell short. I expect the Sharks to improve after that humbling loss to the Sea Eagles last week but I certainly won't be tipping them.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Sharks by 32

Manly Sea Eagles vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – NIB Stadium

If you're going to take one of your home games away from home it makes perfect sense to ensure that your opponent is put out much more than you are – and so it goes that the Sea Eagles take their game against the New Zealand side to the West Coast of this enormous continent. Kieran Foran returns for the Warriors this weekend and there's no doubt this side has improved in recent weeks. Improved yes, but not enough to win this. The Sea Eagles have won 6 of their last 7, and their only loss was a competitive one to the Broncos at Suncorp. That's top four form frankly, and hardly anyone had the Sea Eagles pencilled in as a top four side this season.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 10

Result – Sea Eagles by 4

Canberra Raiders vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

So last week I was wrong about the Raiders and I was wrong about the Cowboys, and I was wrong suggesting the weather would beat the Broncos last weekend. Surely that just means I'm due to get something right? Right? Anyways I've had another look at this dismal Canberra weather and when this game kicks off there will be dog bowls in Canberra freezing over. I spent a fair chunk of time in Townsville and that's not the sort of weather people in Townsville get to experience too often. Bravo to the Cowboys with their win over the Panthers at home, but Canberra at this time of year is an entirely different planet. If the Raiders don't start performing soon Ricky Stuart will be on another planet too.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result – Cowboys by 13

Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium

This won't be the best game of NRL in round seventeen, but it could prove to be the most interesting. 15th plays 16th and the two points on offer could prove the difference and determine who needs to make room in the cutlery drawer. The Knights are actually the favourites and this could be the only time that happens all year. Will the pressure of expectation get to them? They've certainly competed almost every week and we can expect the same here, particularly at home on a Sunday afternoon. I just have a sneaky suspicion that the Tigers will be up for this game, and a win here gives them an opportunity to make some sort of statement. 'We beat the Knights' isn't much of a statement...but at least it says something. I'm with the Tigers, but I'm sure I'd enjoy this game a lot more if the Knights prevailed.

Verdict – Tigers by 2

Result – Tigers by 21

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

These sides met back in round six and it was the Bunnies that prevailed by a single point. Take note that back then the Panthers were without Moylan, Mansour and Peachey. Since that game (in round six) the Bunnies have won just the once...against the Tigers. Meanwhile the Panthers have won four of their last five and went down narrowly to the Cowboys in Townsville last weekend. Sam Burgess is a welcome return for the Rabbits and this Panthers pack will need to bring their boots, but I'm keen on the black cats and $1.65 looks fair shopping to me. Panther responsibly.

Verdict – Panthers by 10

Result – Rabbitohs by 28

I can admit defeat when i'm defeated I know I stuffed up my chances this week when I tipped knights because I did have eels available to me but as you said "a" you have to look ahead which I did knowing what games are next week I thought I would be better keeping the better teams I have available for last but it went against me this time ...

christine's picture

I was one point ahead off the thinker but I won't be after this round but I will catch him again , thinker i'm on your heals ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Stupid Knight's, can push better teams, but roll over lay down for the tigers.

Hi thinker i respect u and ur site but of course everyone has an opininon fair enough but sometimes we have to face facts I mean giving coach of the yearvto a bloke that has achieved nothing in the NRL as player or coach because they are trying over a bloke who has a side primed to win the comp is aburd.

I'm sorry thinker but he posted and compared the knights to only one team that's my team why the knights have pushed other clubs and there are other coaches in the running for coach of the year not just one so why does he only mention brown and Barrett I'm sorry thinker its not opininon its hate he can't stand my teams success not just this year but for 4 decades his club hasnt won a title in 4 decades facts are facts he hides his hate behind the lines and I read him like a book but others just can't see it and strangly he gets away with it with fake and act im sorry thinker but that's how I feel mate ,but thanks for your credit to the mighty eagles because u thinker have a footy brain and an inner understsnding of the game I enjoy ur comments and ur site.

Johnny Awesome
Am I allowed to send a message to your daughter?
I'm a father of two boys and one girl.
All grown up now and happy adults.
Thankfully none of my children experienced bullying as far as I know.
If so... to Johnny A's daughter
" hello my friend, you don't know me and I don't know you but I do talk with your Dad on his site.
Sometimes kids say really horrible things about other kids and it's really mean. It may be face to face or social media. What you have to remember is you are special to your Mum & Dad and your pals.
Bullies are jealous people, jealous of what you've got.
So you must have something special. Find it, use it and excel."
Uncle Mark has spoken.

Hey Pab - r u driving the rattlers, as I thought you were in a foremans position.
Lots of drivers I know, put the weight on and its not hard to do.
Nah Bro - not on the mo shake.
Keep well.

christine's picture

Good on you mark for your post to johnny awesome for his daughter...

christine's picture

Mark I'm on my first strike now on 9 points in "a" A game comp but rick & lillychino still have to battle out 1st & 2nd place because they are both on 10 points ok ...

BigPeteBx's picture

No fears Bro Fortress Eagle.
No-one on this site influences my feelings or thoughts.
Yes, the boys came from behind, a great job done to do it. Played harder than they think to coast home by 4, because catch up footy is what it is - catch up and it can bugger ya, in doing so.
Mate, not a magnificent win, more a gutsy win, because I'd have been more at ease to win by 7 - no, not 57. Seven because Warriors could have defeated us at 4 diff. I like games a little more less stressful, when a result is pending or in the balance.
No curses on me mate. I read was is written and ignore where I can and just hope for the life of me and Brian, that you don't get stuck too deep in it all. Please good follower of this site and The Manly Boys - don't go getting baited. Bite your tongue and be you, without attack or a barrage of defence.
Keep Brooky happy - Big Pete

Well the Rabbits just gave the Panthers a RL lesson.
(I did pick the black cats)
I bet Coach is happy he is no longer here.
Fortress your Manly just got home against the Warriors.
My Broncos got smashed by the Storm.
Sharks flogged the Roosters and the Eels beat the Dogs.
Titans beat the Dragons and the Cows beat the Raiders in Canberra.
Don't think we need to talk about the Knights/Dragons.
Who will be there when it counts?

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Christine for your comment. I hate bullying of our kids and will do all I can to fight it. Our kids are our future and we need to protect them when we can.

a's picture

Yes bullying is bad it should be banned

Baggy_Gee's picture

The less we say about the Eels "win" the better. A rubbish game that should have been shut down early with proper play. But listening to the call this afternoon Alex Johnson tore them apart. Did he get his 6th try? 5 in an afternoon is pretty good.

pabdul's picture

big pete its going to be minus 3 tomorrow in the BX.
with the ice forming your going to look like the jenolan caves with stalactites hanging from your mo.

Watched the panthers game and no wonder te marie Martin took off i have had a big laugh at the late coach pototo and his dynamite dreams all blown up again and another year and some promise of might of been disappearing.

I think we still have two people in a battle for first place...so I'll need to come up with some sort of tie-breaker to separate them.

Rick and Lillychino have both won prizes on this site for other comps in the past...they must be very good judges.

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans

I've updated the tipping comp and the NRL ladder. A tough round for the tipsters – Scott M came out on top in round 17 with 6 from 8...a couple of astute tips for the Sharks and the Rabbitohs and he joins some knucklehead called The Thinker at the top of the competition.  Plenty of tipsters still on our tails. Those that are falling off the pace should try and stick it out to the end. There are prizes for the top three, I can't win and I'll also be giving a prize to a random tipster (who keeps turning up) at the end of the season.

The round eighteen page is already published if anyone has to tip early (what with school holidays and what not). I'll have my previews and tips published by Wednesday lunch time.

All the best

Hi all,
-8 this morning in Tuggeranong. My Dad said it was -10 in Goulbourn, fair dinkum, love it. Thanks Mary, Christine and all you other guys for your kind words regarding my daughter. Hi Mary, nice of you to check on KB. They are based in Erindale College. There is a nice story how they moved from school hall to school hall and finally to Erindale college. The Principle of the college originally gave them an area to convert to a dance studio because he liked what KB stood for. It was supposed to be a temporary arrangement, however in the first year of being established, the crime rate dropped by nearly 80% in the region and the school decided it was a good thing, the rest is history Mary. And KB are still there and growing.
I’ve been associated with Kulture Break now for 15 years now in a volunteer capacity and the changes in people’s lives I’ve witnessed have been amazing. But that’s what gives me faith in human nature, is that good stuff that happens everywhere, the positives will always outweigh the negatives. In footy for example, there are unsung people doing great community stuff as well. For example, a Mary Konstantopoulos article showed Kevin Naigama volunteers in a soup kitchen, Suaia Magagi from Parramatta regularly goes to youth centres, Cody walker teaches health in schools around Sydney, Trent Merrin deals with young men as a mentor keeping them on the right path. What about Jake Friend who was caught drink driving and done for assault and has turned his life around and became a role model. Look at Andrew Fifita and the list goes on. Like the Kulture Break motto states, you don’t need to become somebody, you are somebody. And like Mary Konstantopoulos says: ‘Our game is a game that gives people second chances. It gives players the opportunity to change their lives and then help others to make positive changes in their own’. Now that’s footy as well hey.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

No need to thank us mate. We're not only here to talk footy but to support our posters and their families.
Just looked at the KB site and watched the video. So much fun and love.
Your daughter will be a superstar one day mate in whatever field she chooses. Aussie is a great place to achieve your dreams.
