Canterbury Bulldogs vs North Queensland Cowboys – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium
A couple of important inclusions for the Cowboys in Coote and Granville, but the Thurstiest man on their roster won't be there. In one of the more unusual positional changes Asiata shifts from the halves to prop forward. If that's not a first in the NRL it's right next to first. The Cowboys will need all hands on deck in that engine room when they take on this mighty Bulldogs pack. Given that challenge, and the absence of Thurston, it all points to a victory for the home team.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 4
Result – Cowboys by 16
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – UOW Jubilee Oval
It's one of those special rivalires in the NRL but this clash has lost some of its lustre with the injuries to Josh Dugan and Gareth Widdop. The battle of the forwards has me salivating and that alone will keep this game close, but that Sharks backline is intact and, all other things being equal, should outpoint those opposite. Worth watching though, particularly if you like big units belting the cheese out of each other for 80 minutes.
Verdict – Sharks by 8
Result – Sharks by 4
Wests Tigers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium
Finally we get to see Robbie Farah face his old club. I imagine Farah is feeling pretty comfortable with himself given how the Tigers have gone about unravelling themselves. What's more, the Tigers are actually paying most of his salary this season, and what they are paying him would be more than what most of the players actually wearing Tigers jerseys are getting paid. Three of the big four in Tiger Town are playing on Friday night but Aaron Woods isn't, and in this case he's probably the most important of the four. Without Woods the Tigers look set to struggle in the forwards and the consistent (if somewhat predictable) kicking game of Reynolds can help keep the Tigers pinned at the wrong end of the wrong paddock (note this Tigers home game has been taken to the Rabbitohs home ground). It's not particularly funny, but Farah gets the last laugh.
Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4
Result – Rabbitohs by 20
Penrith Panthers vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – Pepper Stadium
Here it is folks – this seasons most frustrating team taking on the winner of the most frustrating team award for the previous ten years in succession. And yet here I am tipping the Panthers again...I must be a very slow learner. There's nothing particularly rational about my choice, other than glass-half full thinking that at some point the Panthers are going to show us something this season, and many of these Warriors are backing up from international duty and another game in Australia. They usually save their worst for us. If they are near their best I'll have this completely wrong.
Verdict – Panthers by 2
Result – Panthers by 8
Melbourne Storm vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium
Both sides lose one key man each with Jesse Bromwich (Storm) and Proctor (Titans) suspended from duty for off-field stupidity. I assume they won't be hitting Caxton Street together for a drink or two after the game. Now I've probably told you all a thousand times that tipping against the Storm is a mugs game, but I'm tipping against the Storm. They've lost just once this season but they're missing some key men in the middle. A lot of these Titans should be nice and fresh and they'll be well prepared for this game. They've struggled with injuries all season but they have so many of their key men available right now they've got Jarryd Hayne playing in the centres. They're rank outsiders and they probably should be, but I'm giving them a live chance.
Verdict – Titans by 2
Result – Titans by 2
Manly Sea Eagles vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium
I'm tipping two upsets at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night. Since round two the Sea Eagles have been taking on top eight teams and have proven to be more than competitive. They beat the Cowboys in Townsville and the Raiders in Canberra. Their only losses during this period were an absolute towelling by the Dragons and a narrow loss to the Storm – that's the top two teams on the ladder right now. Last start they absolutely ran riot over the Rabbitohs, a team that almost beat the Broncos in round eight. They're up to this, paticularly while the Broncos are without Hunt and Roberts. This game gives Mr Cherry-Evans an opportunity to show the QLD Origin selectors what he can do too.
Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4
Result – Broncos by 10
Newcastle Knights vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium
Insert logical reasoning here. None of you would be tipping the Knights so I can say just about anything can't I? My hovercraft is full of eels.
Verdict – Raiders by 16
Result – Knights by 14
Sydney Roosters vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Allianz Stadium
Shaun Kenny-Dowall really dropped the ball last week...which isn't unusual. He's resting this week, and he may struggle to get another contract from here. Mind you, for a backpacker who just turned up from New Zealand and thought he'd give the game a try he's made a pretty reasonable career out of it. It beats picking fruit for a living, which could be his next contract. Note that Bevan French is named on an extended bench so keep watching the skies in case he gets called into the seventeen. I'm a fan. In any case I'm with the chooks on Sunday – every time I look at that Roosters forward pack I start smiling like an idiot. They're so good Aiden Guerra can't even get a start. If the Eels played for 80 minutes I'd be tipping them, but they're likely to switch off in patches and the tricolours won't. That may prove to be the difference.
Verdict – Roosters by 4
Result – Roosters by 38

Hi All,
I've gone for some upsets this round, I hope they pay off!
Bulldogs - Their form is too good and without Thurston, I don't see how the Cowboys can win.
Sharks - The Dragons won't be strong enough without Dugan and Widdop.
Tigers - Even though the Tigers haven't been consistent, the Rabbitohs might still be struggling with the hiding they were given in Round 9.
Warriors - I'm hoping they're fired up from beating the Rossters in Round 9 but we'll see - they're a risky team to tip.
Storm - Even with the loss of Bromwich, I think they have what it takes to pull off a victory against the Titans.
Sea Eagles - I think they have what it takes to upset the Broncos this week.
Raiders - I think they'll want to prove themselves after a couple of losses, the Knights don't have a chance.
Roosters - Even though the Eels have picked themselves up, I don't think they'll be good enough to beat the Roosters.
Good luck everyone!

Agree Mark A about Lang Park.....nothing like old Brooky either.
Penrith Park sounds better than Pepper, because they're far from salt and the water (beach).
These names are heritage with R/League.
Yeah, I know sponsorship and corporate dollars.

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:
Cowboys by 4- Although Thurston is out this week, with the Cowboys getting some key inclusions back, I think that they'll win... just.
Dragons by 2- I'm not going against the Dragons here but if we do win, I think that it'll be very close.
Rabbitohs by 8- The Rabbitohs to get back into form with a win here.
Panthers by 10- Panthers will start their string of wins here I've said it and I'm sticking with it.
Storm by 6- I think that the Storm with be too clinical for the Titans.
Broncos by 8- Broncos to beat Manly here.
Raiders by 14- Raiders to get back into form with a convincing win over the Knights.
And finally... Roosters by 4- Roosters in a close one.
Awesome. Good luck with everyone's teams this week and for everyone's tips this week.
Cheers!!!!!!

Yeah well with medication drugs it's okay but you should only use them for the amount of time the doctor asks you too
Submitted by BigPeteBx on
Yes "a" - I know someone called truce here on the drugs saga that has swept the code off its feet - again.
What I was getting at wasn't the length of time a person was on the medications etc. or having medicine administered to them.
It is what is contained in them.
Codeine was a banned drug in Olympic/Commonwealth Games and several of the mixtures today contains that.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
WADA has an incredible list of banned substances, and this comes back to the crux of the essendon and sharks doping saga. Players have the duty of care to themselves to triple check the ingredients, clubs and official also have that duty of care. So ignorance is not a plausible defence.

Good win for the COWBOYS they can without JT I think they can beat the Sharks next week
Submitted by christine on
Paul Carter should be tested & i'm not refering to cocaine i'm refering to human growth hormone , he wasn't that size when he played for Penrith , titans or souths so I would be testing him if I was an official or wada , no offence there newbie but I noticed the difference when he left souths & started playing for roosters ...

I'm sorry everyone but no one forces anyone to come on this site, and no one forces anyone to leave this site.
I don't think its a good look when people demand people to come back on here what it does it makes them think that without them it's not worthy or the rest of us are not good enough.
I think we should let people decide weather they want to go and stay no one is better than any one else on here were all the samd ,I think its more like if some don't get there own way they leave hoping some of us on here will demand there return and in turn what that does is give them a power trip,
Life goes on folks !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all,
Big Pete, sorry for the late reply, it's easy to lose messages when the round ends. Mate, regarding aches and pains, I don't use any medication or creams. I don't believe in it, I"d rather feel and know my limits then use a mask. I do however take extra vitamin supplements like men's multi, fish oil and glucosamine. My Mum and Dad got me onto it. Mum in particular who has been wheel chair bound for 25 years, she's 85 now and fairdinkum, the fish oil in particular has helped her heaps. Out of interest Big Pete, which team do you follow? Mr Fortress, good to hear from you again. Mate, who was/is your favourite Manly player? My favourite Manly player was Graeme Eadie. In fact, the two Graeme's ie. Eadie and LangLands were my favourite players in my era. Cheers from Mr Awesome

yesterday i was asked to help select a college rep team which was an honour and an eye opener.
about 80% of the kids trialling were islanders it looked like a manu vatavai lookalike competition but even as great as he is he cant play every position. there was a couple of arabic kids but they just fought over who should put up the bomb. on the other field was a soccer trial which had more numbers and more diversity.when i asked them why they prefer soccer most didn't but they or their parents didnt want them to play due to their size differences. i must admit some of the hits resembled the malachi crunch in happy days but i think we need to class players in weight divisions till they mature. the only ones not playing either were the Indian kids who said they had no interest in league and they dont player soccer because everytime they get a corner they'd put a shop on it.

Sorry a, missed the comp, been very busy lately, Go the cowboys, great to see their defence finally pick up. Hey Thinker, I cant seem to fathom why so many picking the Panthers over the Warriors, I know a lot of warriors are backing up after the test but the Panthers are absolutely woeful at the moment and I just cant see them improving, there is definitely something wrong with that club at the moment, does someone know something that I don't?

Hi all,
Anthony Griffin is too good a coach to let Penrith slide too far. If anything, it's been probably a bonus for them, the indifferent start, got the pressure of expectations off their back. On another note Bulldogs look pretty ordinary, sure they'll graft some wins. They are playing predictable footy and fairdinkum they'll be just cannon fodder if they make the eight. Cheers from Mr Awesome

I just want to say in regards to aches & pains don't ever complain if you have pain it means you can be treated but when you don't have pain but you have a problem such as you can't walk properly it can mean you've done something seriously wrong as an example apart from having ms I also have a protruding disc in my back with a vertebrae resting on a nerve which presented as a muscular problem in my thigh & I couldn't walk properly so they couldn't treat me at the time until I had tests done but now it turns out I have ms as well as having a protruding disc with a vertebrae resting on a nerve in my back & I was told at the time pain means you can be treated no pain means you have done something more serious , when I couldn't walk properly before they thought I had put my hips out but it turn out to be a protruding disc in my back with a vertebrae resting on a nerve as well as having ms so next time you have pain don't complain it's a good thing not a bad thing ...

Where's Coach gone? One of the most intelligent posters on this site...
Submitted by Johnny Awesome on
I'm hearing ya Christine and that's why I don't use pain killers or creams to mask a problem. I'd rather know my limits. Sounds like you've been through the ringer but with that positive attitude you have, you are getting on with life. A work colleague of mine has ms and like you, he doesn't let that stop him from living his life. He's a plumber and uses a special frame to not only carry his tools but to help him walk. He's a real inspiration. Sports people get treated like heros, but in reality the true heros are the people fighting adversity every day in their lives and doing it with positivity. Cheers Christine it's always a pleasure to hear your opinion. Kind regards from Mr Awesome

Hi Mr Fortress,
The 70's wss when I started playing league, so both Eadie and Langlands left quite an impression on me as a youngster. Yes mate you are right, so many great players over so many years and the best thing is that it's still happening with the unbelievable talent we have out there. Just a quick reminder St George have more wins than Manly over their playing history against each other. Thought I'd throw that one in mate cheers from Mr Awesome

What is your IQ level, Coach surely was the most divisive poster here.
As for the most intelligent one here well a lot of people would disagree with you. Coach did a lot of Googling and posted lots of stats but upset more people than he should have.
He's admitted to being a "stirrer" but for what purpose?
This site is a "fun" RL site and should stay that way.

"a" and Tailspin and other Cows supporters.
I tipped the Dogs much to my shame. They were hopeless.
The two Morris boys who will no doubt feature in the Blues team were embarrassed by the Cowboys.
The Dogs missed Josh Reynolds big time and they've let him go.
Only player who put his hand up was Josh Jackson and he will be a "blue"
Sharks and Rabbits to win tonight (I hope)

Glucosamine is very good for joints but only buy the supplements with Chondroiton, as it is better. Mark my words Bro. Fish oil very good for your cholesterol and there is a new salmon oil out now, has helped me in ways, not that I am fat or overweight or suffer high cholesterol, but I am cautious. I ran, played soccer, basketball and cricket and quite often had sprains/strains - so I used the rub on liniments and found them good. It doesn't block your skin pores and it works quicker than a pill dissolving.
Hey Kandos Kid - check my avatar out - that is who I support in NRL.
When you asked Fortress about best/favourite Manly player, that is a big question as there are so many with me. But Bozo Immortal Bob Fulton was one of mine. Wombat Eadie was also. Dont forget John O'Neill and Mal Reilly for forwards. Ken Irvine came to Manly (ex Nth Sydney Bears) later in his career and boy was he a flyer on the wing and top try-scorer.
I loved Eric Simms from Souths for his goalkicking ability.
One of my Oberon cousins played with St George. A brother and son of his played with West Magpies. Another cousin, her brother in law is Tony Trudgett. Of all the St George players, I think Changa (without the white boots) was a fave.
Mate, we could talk for years about all this. Best we also meet for a beer one day, when u r about.

Evenin Fortress, should be a cracker Polly, or a double bunger at that.
Some great Manly names you discussed with Johhny A.
We could also talk for years. I'll add Beaver to that list, but we also had some good imports from other clubs came to us. Kevin Junee (Easts and Run for Your Life Sports Stores he owned), Elwyn Walters (Easts), Les Boyd, Paul MacCabe (Wests), John O'Neill (Souths). Dont forget the great Crusher Cleal. But fullbacks were a topic in the day and we had Bob Batty when I started following r/league. Couldn't go past Eric Simms for Souths - a great front on kicker and had his boot toe built up, for the hard hit from long distance.
Memories mate.
Keep well - Big Pete

Evenin Mark A - yes a fun and friendly site here, where acquaintances should be made more often, rather than in-fighting.
Stirring leads to wars, but my associate Manly Fortress, has a duel to clean up on and he stands his ground on all occasions. I tend to just turn the head and ignore it, as time will come when the boot is on the other foot/leg.

Evenin Padbul Bro - something I really detest with on-site blogging/comments, is that you never know who is leading a "double life". At least I know that you and Paula are the real thing (no Russell Morris).....no, not humming - yet.
I know that Fortress isn't Fort Bronx or Apache - he is Brooky Fortress and a fearless warrior.
If Coach is Handy and he isn't Andy - he isn't Waltzing with Matilda, but he might be a Jolly Swagman.....because he disappears a bit, lately.
Then again, he can be forgiven, as it is hibernation time in the garden for potatoes. Until dug-up and sent to a supermarket.
