Round twenty three selections

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

It's never been more important for your team to have a good fullback, and I mean a bloody good fullback. Every player wearing the number one jersey in the NRL this weekend has been racking up tries this season...but one. Will Hopoate, bless him, is in grave danger of facing the nudie run this season. To go along with his 0 tries he has made just one line break this year. It's not a good look, particularly when you consider that the Rabbitohs haven't had a great season either, but their fullback on Thursday night has 17 tries and 13 line breaks this season. Hopoate clearly isn't the only reason the Bulldogs are struggling this year, but he's on the list of reasons. That Bulldogs forward pack is first class, and if your backs can't create tries on the back of that pack something is clearly wrong. This is the fourth successive Thursday night game for the Bulldogs and they have been terrible and terribly boring every single time. Channel Nine must be shaking their heads in dismay.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 8

Result – Rabbitohs by 14

Parramatta Eels vs Newcastle Knights – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

It's not often a team running last would have smiles on their faces, but the Knights dressing shed would be a slightly happier place at the minute. Back-to-back wins for the first time since forever and a bunch of young locals getting better each and every week. There's half a dozen teams in the NRL that could learn a thing or two from the team running last. While they can't win on Friday night, they will give a good account of themselves and that makes this game a heck of a lot more watchable than the Thursday night grind. The Eels are on a roll and have a sweet run into the finals. Top four looks likely now but I think they should try to aim one spot higher. Top four means your first final will probably be against the Storm in Melbourne. I'm sure they would rather play a Sydney team in Sydney.

Verdict – Eels by 14

Result – Eels by 19

Brisbane Broncos vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

Both sides will have plenty to play for in this – assuming the Eels beat the Knights, the team that loses this game slips out of the top four. Right now the Sharks are paying $3.00 to win this game and here are three reasons why they can pull off an upset:

  1. They've played nine games away from home this season and they've won eight of them (their only away loss was that underwater game on the Gold Coast). Those away victories include wins over three genuine contenders this season – Storm, Roosters and Eels.
  2. The Sharks were pretty ordinary last start and they know it. They have a habit of bouncing back from a poor performance.
  3. Paul Gallen is king of the nub-nubs but he's playing his 300th game on Friday night – I expect his team will lift.

The Broncos were great to watch against the Titans, but you have to question the willingness of their opponent in that game. The Sharks will be willing, and I think they are willing and able to pull off an upset. Note the return of Maloney – just on goal-kicking alone he helps the Sharks in what I assume will be a tight contest.

Verdict – Sharks by 2

Result – Sharks by 22

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – UOW Jubilee Oval

Dragons coach Mary McGregor hasn't had much of a fortnight – a loss to the Knights, a $10000 fine, an extraordinary loss to the Rabbitohs and his team have fallen out of the top eight. I've a feeling they'll win here, but mainly because I feel like the Titans have given up. The Titans did beat the Dragons in round 17, but the Titans were well and truly trying then. I could easily have this wrong, but I'm with the Red V in front of their faithful army.

Verdict – Dragons by 8

Result – Dragons by 26

Melbourne Storm vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – AAMI Park

First plays second in the game of the round, but I do feel like there's quite the gap between first and second this season. Two rounds back I raised my doubts about the Roosters credentials and the Chooks got up and won after looking wobbly early on (Thinker shakes fist). Then I decided I must have been wrong about them, tipped them last weekend and they were pretty darn ordinary (Thinker shakes fist again). Perhaps I was right to doubt, but I do note that they are a vastly improved seventeen with Cordnor and Friend back on the paddock. That's not enough for this doubting Thomas though – Cameron 'The Accountant' Smith will note the ladder positions going into this game, he'll crunch the numbers and he'll work out that winning this game all but seals the minor premiership for the purple machine. Smith likes trophies.

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result – Storm by 3

Penrith Panthers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Pepper Stadium

Some games are crunchier than others, and this is a real crunch game for the Cowboys. A loss here and I have them slipping to eighth on the ladder, and the teams in 9th and 10th will be just two points behind. The Cowboys haven't had to spend too much time in Sydney this season (for the sake of an argument I'm calling Penrith as Sydney...close enough surely). This will be just their fourth game in the harbour city and their three previous visits have resulted in two losses (to the Sharks and Roosters) and one win (over the Bulldogs). This is the toughest opponent the Panthers have faced in a while but they have won five in a row. They lost to the Cowboys by just two points in Townsville, and I'll bank on home ground advantage getting them over the line on this occasion.

Verdict – Panthers by 4

Result – Panthers by 8

New Zealand Warriors vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Tallking about the Warriors just makes me cranky so I won't be saying much, but I will say this – Ryan Hoffman is back this week and maybe, just maybe, he can talk his troops into putting in half an effort on Sunday. That's the only glimmer of light I can see for the home side here. Bah!.

Verdict – Raiders by 14

Result – Raiders by 20

Wests Tigers vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

Manly are in seventh place on the ladder and the teams in 6th and 8th are playing each other on Saturday night. If the Cowboys lose the Sea Eagles can move into 6th place with a win. If the Panthers lose the Sea Eagles can put a four point gap on their nearest rival. Either way a win shores up their finals prospects. Their performance against the Roosters indicated that they've found their mojo. Back the total points overs if you're into that sort of thing – this game looks like one of those 44-26 kinda scorelines (weather permitting).

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 16

Result – Tigers by 4

Cowboys have even more injuries damn

Mary S's picture

They certainly put up a gutsy performance tonight 'a' but couldn't pull off the result they (and their fans) wanted. They have hard weeks ahead too. Certainly they are having a really bad time injury wise this year.

Big pete bx Good to hear from you & glad to hear you agree with me & too make it loud & clear with everyone no one ever said it's a manly free zone we don't judge big pete by the team he chooses too follow ( only joking big pete ) so let's just leave the manly situation that happened in the past & move on , so mark I take it you've been doing more tourism for QLD again i'm told lara bingle is going to send you the bikini I hope it arrives there safe , glad to see your back on site & yes big pete i'm doing ok i'm still waiting to hear when treatment will be & this week so far i'm on 3 / 5 which isn't good but I did get the broncos win but I took eels & cowboys over Penrith but that's nrl for you ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

It's coming Pete, it's coming. If the artists impressions are anything to go by a full square ground like most of the EPL ground and Suncorp will make it a solid destination ground for art involved. Still fuming about last night and the weak minds of the BOYS. I'll be better by next week. Mark is right, it's not a Manly free site, it's an everyone free site, free to leave if you have no ability to read and understand that everyone has a valid point. Just annoyed that after they few years the knights have had one of the men who has had a massive input will be over looked because of the ladder results. BAH HUMBUG!!! On a lighter note Manly and the Wobblers Pete? Glutton for punishment I see.

a's picture

Yeah Mary S we are having a horror time with Injuries it will be tough against the Sharks next week

christine's picture

I have to correct myself i'm actually on 4 / 6 which still isn't good but that's tipping for you ...

Mary S's picture

What a sensational 2nd half by the Tigers this afternoon - mind you the result didn't do my tipping comp any good. Well done and all Tiger fans will be jumping for joy - sorry BigPete!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

My comisserations Pete. It's always a bitter pill to swallow.

a's picture

Week done Tigerholic on the Tigers win you must be happy

a's picture

Sorry that was meant to say well done Tigerholic

christine's picture

Well done tigerholic on your tigers getting up today & big pete sorry for your loss ...

Anonymous's picture

Doing the eagles lost
They started fast but finished slow I'm just crazy by the way you lose
Doing the eagles lost

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Mary - Tigers made good of lofted passes, thus intercept.
Manly were their own worst enemies this afternoon - second half.
When 16pts up, they should have gone on with it.............another day and another story - but no excuses for bad mistakes.
Friend of mine was saying that Dogs will win a game before the season ends, and that had me thinking this round, as to why I picked them - but not to be. Hmmmmmmmmmm...........doesn't gel well, if next week is it.
Cheers and have a good week - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Bee Gee , it certainly is a bitter pill.
Tigers must have felt that Benji was already back home with them and ran a good game in second half.
Oh well - I take defeat with our wins, but from here is where they need to be pounding the turf, with the draw they have, prior to finals, if they wish to be there.
Cheers Baggy and have a good week.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening Miss Christine - that is sport/footy. But Manly fell through their backsides this arvo, in second half.

@ Tigerholic - well done mate, TigPies played good footy at Leichhardt, another of the NRL graveyards. I think Benji will go well for Ivan Cleary next season. He still has footy life left in him and good to see him stay in NRL and not head away.

Cheers and have a good week all
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Well Anonymous - I'm not humming either, but at least those who are brave enough here, have a better identity and don't hide behind their mothers nightie.
Eagles are strong enough, they bounce back and learn by their mistakes - even if week in, week out.
Dislike what you like about Manly, they are still skilfull and like to throw the ball around. Look out when they hit their rhythmic form.
In the meantime - try to have a nice week.
Big Pete.

BigPeteBx's picture

Hoiwdy Newbie - nice to see you post ed to me.
Sorry I never got back. I don't read the future and had a not so good week, shall we say this round. Don't have a Time Machine or Tunnel.
But I'd love to help you if I could. Fares are cheaper to The Land of Smiles from yours, for starters.

Manly not so slick in second half today. I'd like to ask what was injected into their half-time oranges. Doesn't sound like Menindee citrus, as it usually isn't sour.

As for DST - it comes from Canberra and many don't like the saving that is made. Not Treasury stuff, but more like Climate stuff, intermingled with Attorney General Dept. I don't know if WA needs it, as on the majority, they are 3 hours behind us in the East, as it is.

Keep well Champ and have a good week.
Your Gunners got up in Round 1 of EPL.
Cheers - Big Pete

Rocket 's picture

Tigerholic is as surprised as Trent and the Eagles.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yeah Rocket - TigPies just kept keeping on and it fell their way.
They wanted it more and believed in themselves.
Certainly a different ball game, when they ran out after halftime.
Cheers and have good week - Big Pete

tigerholic's picture

Evening Folks
A miraculous win from a very committed Tigers outfit today. I along with everyone else expected Manly to be far too good for us, they played that way in the first half as we could only score from a grubber.

Second half was sensational, would love to watch it again. Sorry Big Pete, it is only a speed bump for your boys as you will be playing finals footy regardless.

Sorry for not posting much of late, have been very busy of late. Have a great weekend folks and thanks for the good wishes about the Tigers, still have a smile on my Tigger Face.

christine's picture

Tigerholic Can you answer a ? for me please would benji be returning to tigers if Jason taylor was still there or was there no problem between them ?

Baggy_Gee's picture

I did enjoy listening to the grandstand call when the Tigers scored, then knocked on allowing Manly to score, then Manly knocked on allowing the Tigers to score. Haven't heard that many consecutive tries score since I listened to the Knights score off 4 back to back sets back in 98, 99. They put score on that day.

BigPeteBx's picture

Hey Holy Tiger from The Holy Grail of 2WoomBar.
Tell me , do you usually catch up with Baggy G.
From your old haunts in NSW, Knights are showing they'll be a different unit in 2018.
U r forgiven in being busy and not posting much. We all get those moments.
Towards end of month, I am hoping I can still see to post, as I am in for ophthalmic surgery on one eye and have to wait for the other, that is associated with floaters and fluid behind the eye.
Hahahaha..............I can hear some out there chuckling, about the colours of the eye. No, nothing to do with Manly guys - but a cataract off and having the lens of the eye taken out and being replaced. Amazing what they do and I hope it is a sightful success for me. I'm told that when the lens is replaced, it can take your sight back 10 to 20 years, for the better. So here's to seeing ya.
Cheers and have a good growling week with the tiger in your tank.
Enjoy it, as your have the Chooks at Allianz next week.
Big Pete

christine's picture

Big pete bx Manly will win next week they are playing bulldogs , I hate this time of year the season is almost over & the off season is so boring ...

BigPeteBx's picture

Good evening Baggy G.
Funny how you comment about Grandstand call on radio.
My cousin in Western Sydney (outer P/matta area), does similar with watch tv game and listen to radio.
Don't know who is on their show these days, but David Morrow is an old boy from my place and played r/union here locally. His dad was very, very good at table tennis and loved his horses as well.
Cheers Old Son and keep well - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Not wrong there Miss Christine - a long off-season.
That is why I follow English Football (soccer), some others do also here.
My background as a young fellow was soccer and then I got coaching as well. There are more Arsenal followers than others here.
Australian A-League Soccer, starts in October, I think.
Then there is also BBL Cricket, which I don't mind. It is 20 x 20 cricket - big hitting stuff. Might even get to a match this year in Sydney. Closer to home here.
I have this year gone into an ESPN Tipping Comp as FOX Sports ran a good tipping comp last year, but this year brought in Predictor, where you have to tip the scores of each and every game - every week. Not for some of us.
We will keep in touch, via Thinker site.
Cheers Missy - Big Pete.

a's picture

Don't forget about NBL BigPete what I follow in the off season

BigPeteBx's picture

Good late evening "a".
I hadn't been watching much of our local NBL the past couple of years.
I played a fair bit of basketball in my days. Mainly centre. Also coached, but mainly women's teams.
Was in Adelaide yonks years ago and saw Adelaide Sixers play Brisbane Bullets. Al Green, Leroy Loggins are names that come to mid.
Ken Cole was Sixers coach. Truly one hell of a match that was.
Here in NSW - I would be a Sydney Kings follower, but still have a soft spot for Adelaide.
I guess your being a Bowen Boy, you would follow Taipans would you.
I watch results as they come through, but in NBA I am a LA Lakers man. I started that way and stayed it.
Many were Celtic with Larry Bird running about, in my time.

Best I push on, getting later and past my snooze time, before the grind tomorrow.
Keep well - we will speak more on the topic.
Cheers - Big Pete

Steel Panther's picture

EagleRocks you fronting up with a comment this round?

a's picture

Yes BigPete I do I used to follow Crocs but they gone soo Carins now

Baggy_Gee's picture

Never heard from again after that loss.

a's picture

I also follow the NFL in the off season too BigPete

christine's picture

Big pete bx I know someone else who too had floaters & also pink eye they had their eyes done & their sight is much better, my neighbour has macular degeneration which there is fluid behind her eyes & she also has glaucoma & she has to have an injection in her eye now every couple of months but it used to be every month your lucky you don't have that , it's not pleasant but it's better than not being able to see & it's not cheap they know how to charge that's fore sure anyway all the best big pete ...

pabdul's picture

Just got back from Adelaide where the old man took a turn for the worst but is recovering in hospital at 94 he's only one clean hit over the bowlers head from raising his bat so hopefully he can get there
I was trying to catch up on the comments made first my manly free zone comment was taken out of context which I will explain if anyone needs clarification
Secondly I can't believe not one comment on the roosters v storm game with controversial penalty try great defence and tryouts for hurdles
Third and finally big Pete my wife had the same operation and swears by it so good luck with that but I do know a bloke that had the same operation and went back after a week and asked for a reversal apparently he liked the blurred version of his missus better

a's picture

Yeah that pentaly try wasn't a Pently try it should give been a penalty and maybe a sin bin but not a try

mark ashford's picture

Big Pete.
At age 10 I was hit in my right eye by a small pebble fired from a sling shot from my ever loving brother. A slow growing impact cataract formed and was not able to be removed until I was 35. I only had left eye vision for 25 years. The right eye is not perfect but probably has 95% vision more than sufficient to drive etc. That was 30 years ago and eye surgery is much improved today.
Tiger your Tiges second half was incredible. Pity they haven't done that all year. Sorry for the Manly fans, thought you had that one.
Paddy didn't see the Storm game, was the penalty try a fair call?
Thanks to "a", Chris and others for the welcome back

christine's picture

Thinker tonight on 360 it's been revealed that coach neil henry has been sacked & doesn't even know about it yet & jarryd hayne is staying at the titans now I hope this information is incorrect but it was said by phil rothfield so expect an announcement soon apparently hayne has a habit of getting rid of coaches quote phil rothfield so please don't shoot the messanger í'm just passing on the information that's been said ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

If that's true it will explain why hayne never came back. The NRL are banking on him being the draw card for the team and not performance.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I was just softening the anti manly tilt we have here, the only manly fan who posts win lose or draw is Pete, and he is a decent bloke by my count.

christine's picture

I agree with you baggy big pete is a decent bloke & I don't have any problem with big pete at all he's alright by me & he's never done anything wrong ...

pabdul's picture

How's this even a topic everyone knows Petes a champion bloke
He would only go to jail if kindness became a crime and still the wardens would be lined up to tuck him in

christine's picture

Padbul I was just responding to what baggy was saying because I agree with him in regards to big pete that's all ...

christine's picture

Baggy expect that announcement after Thursdays game becasuse titans are playing eels on thursday & jarryd isn't playing he's got a sore ankle the cat ...

christine's picture

Baggy I also just read a tweet on this very page about it if you look you will see for yourself if the club get rid of neil henry it's going to cost them $400.000 but if they get rid of hayne it will cost them $1200000.00 & it's also being reported by the telegraph as well according to the tweet & ash taylor also has a problem with neil henry but they asked Anthony don the other day if he has a problem with neil henry & he said he doesn't so watch this space & see what comes from it all ...

christine's picture

That was supposed to say $1.2 million sorry about that ...

christine's picture

Sorry my eyes are playing tricks on me tonight when you've got that many 0's they all blur toughter

a's picture

Yeah BigPete is a good person we always got along even at the time I didn't get along with all the other Manly supporters I always got along with him

a's picture

By the way I hope it Hayne who gets sacked not the Coach

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening 'a'.
Who do you follow in NBA and NFL?
I wasn't all that much into NFL, as it took 2 days to play the last quarter - or it felt like it. Not so much into the ice-hockey either, but just depends who is playing.
We'll have a good chat on occasions about NBL and some NBA.
Keep well - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Thank you Christine,
I've heard about those needles in the eye. Much appreciate your thoughts and I'll keep you posted, when it is done. Thanks for giving me the thumbs up with it.
Cheers for now - Big Pete
