Round nine selections

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Wests Tigers – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

It seems a long time ago, but it wasn't, when the Rabbitohs and Tigers were at the top of the table. Both teams won their first two games of the season, and by convincing margins. The Bunnies scored 90 points in their first two outings, but they haven't scored 20 points in a game since. The Tigers scored 70 points in their first two outings, and have scored 20 points in a game just once since. I'm no mathemagician, but if you want to win games you need to be scoring points. Last weekend the Tigers conceded 60 in what will probably be their low water mark in season 2016 - at least I hope it was. We're likely to see a Dead Tigger Bounce on Thursday night but how high can Tigger bounce? These two teams have managed just one win between them in the last six rounds, but at least the Bunnies had a go last Friday night. Clearly the Tigers put the cue in the rack against the Raiders, and that's not rugby league. Not the rugby league I like I tells ya. Neither team can be tipped with confidence but I can't the Tigers full stop.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4

Result - Tigers 30 defeated Rabbitohs 22

Parramatta Eels vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

These sides met back in round three on this night at this venue, and the Eels absolutely dominated. The Bulldogs scored a consolation try to make the score (look) respectable, but all respect was with the Eels that night. Their forwards were expected to crumble under Bulldog pressure but crumble they did not. What makes that performance even more impressive is that they were without Nathan Peats and Manu Ma'u in that game, and both players are lacing on boots on Friday. Semi 'The Big Australian' Radradra scored two tries in round three in one of his best performances thus far. Given his recent call-up to national honours another big game wouldn't surprise. The Bulldogs are hard to get a read on this season - they drift in and out of games like a truck driver 42 hours into a 48 hour shift. If they're on they'll win, but they're on less often than Bert Newton at the minute.

Verdict – Eels by 8

Result - Eels 20 defeated Bulldogs 12

Penrith Panthers vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Carrington Park

Last week I pointed out how much the Panthers were scoring every round. They maintained the pattern in round 8 so I may as well point it out again - 22, 16, 23, 12, 20, 18, 16, 18. It doesn't seem to matter whether they're playing the Broncos or the Roosters, the Panthers score about the same number of points every game. The Raiders usually score more points than that, including in round one when they beat the Panthers 30-22 in Canberra. Now this game isn't in Canberra but it's not in Penrith either. Segeyaro returns this week, with Wallace switching back to the halves to replace the injured Martin. That's a darn good spine the Panthers have there (Segeyaro, Wallace, Soward and Moylan), but it might take them a week or two to gel. The Raiders are outsiders but backable at the price.

Verdict – Raiders by 2

Result - Panthers 19 defeated Raiders 18

Sydney Roosters vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – Allianz Stadium

I've an uneasy feeling saying this, but the Roosters are rolled-gold, lock-of-the-week, get-in-the-queue, red-spot specials this week. Everyone's favourite dog handler is back and he's bringing Waerea-Hargreaves with him. Those two will be desperate to get off the leash and onto the field. Here's to you Mrs Robinson had a bit of a spray after the ANZAC Day game, but let's be blunt - when you let your opponent get out to an 18-0 lead you can't afford a single dud call from an official. Laugh about it shout about it when you've got to choose. Every way you look at it you lose. The Knights have named a squad of 20 for this game so it's hard to know what their team will look like, but they haven't named Mullen and this very young Knights side will struggle without an experienced organiser and playmaker.

Verdict – Roosters by 20

Result - Roosters 38 defeated Knights 0

Manly Sea Eagles vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Brookvale Oval

The big news leading into this game is that Sea Eagles captain Jamie Lyon has announced he will retire at the end of this season so he can focus on representative footy. Hyuk hyuk hyuk....I like that one....well done Thinker old chap. Regardless of whatever sense of occasion the Lyon announcement brings, the Cowboys are too good. Far too good.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result - Cowboys 34 defeated Sea Eagles 18

New Zealand Warriors vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

It looks like those bookies are going to let me back the Dragons again this weekend. Granted they have to travel all the way from Sydney to Auckland, but the Warriors have to travel all the way from Melbourne to Auckland. If this game were in Sydney I suspect the Dragons would be favourites, but the Dragons have won 6 from 9 at Mt Smart. In fact, the Dragons have only lost to the Warriors four times anywhere. Warriors coach Andrew McFadden shook the cage and told everyone to lift their game or else. That didn't work last time and I've no reason to believe it will work this time. Mannering out. Lolohea out. I can't have them.

Verdict – Dragons by 4

Result - Warriors 26 defeated Dragons 10

Gold Coast Titans vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

The Storm haven't unleased in attack too often this season, but they did last week and they did in round two when they played the Titans in Melbourne. Billy Slater was a late withdrawal from that game and the virtually unknown Curtis Scott stepped in to fill the void. A 42-0 victory last round is difficult to ignore, even if the opposition that day was questionable. While the Titans have shown plenty of competitive spirit in recent weeks they've still lost four games in a row. I've no doubt they'll be competitive again this Sunday, but they're facing a team who know how to win the close games better than anyone else.

Verdict – Storm by 1

Result - Storm 38 defeated Titans 0

Cronulla Sharks vs Brisbane Broncos – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

Those in the Shire are getting a little bit excited about their team in season 2016...and that's okay. They're winning games and they're playing with an expansive flair that we haven't seen from Cronulla for many years. But....and there's always a but, the Broncos have conceded just one try in their last three games. Cronulla are one of the form teams in the competition but the Broncos are the form team in the competition. Nikorima will be tested by the Cronulla forwards in the nine jersey as he takes on more minutes, but the return of Alex Glenn for the visitors eases some of my concerns on that front. It's the game of the round and it will go to the wire. Broncos...just

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Sharks 30 defeated Broncos 28

Western Sydney too good for Brisbane in the A-League.
The Wanderers must have taken a leaf out of Panthers' book hey Rocket.

Coach Potato's picture

You make a fair point about Warriors in the comp, Steel.

I don't know exactly what it costs a team to play away but I think I've heard up to $50k. 20 odd people - flights, a few night accommodation, meals. Must be close.

Warriors need to make 12 of these away trips a year. Not a chance of funding that themselves. NRL has funded the Warriors (and Storm) all through their existances. Is that fair? If a club cannot fund themselves, do they have a right to remain in the comp. My response in No.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Hey coach maybe the warriors could have some players you and gus gould will be churing out of that million dollar Academy we have heard so much about that the panthers have they obviously are not using them.

Coach Potato's picture

We are doing what we can inside the salary cap, unlike teams like the Broncos who brazenly act outside the rules then claim supremacy. Don't you have to win to do that?

Coach Potato's picture

You are right in a way though, because Panthers over the next several years are set to churn out (I think thats how most people spell it) dozens of players that the cap doesn't allow us to keep. Ultimately we will be churning out players to fill the rosters of other teams and so more than a bit counter productive.

Rocket Ryan's picture

We saw the bunker gift penrith a win over the eels changing the scrum feed has anyone any idea why they are not changing incorrect decisions that inpact games such as yesterday's roosters saints game ie roosters try or saints goal.

The only consistency appears to be lnconsiste.ncy

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

Hello guys, got 7 last week missed out on the Warriors. It went down to the last match for me. Going for a perfect round this week. So my tips for the possible perfect round is:

Rabbitohs by 10- Dunno if Reynolds is playing but if he doesn't play, it'll make a pretty big difference. Tigers' confidence are down, they're not working well together at the moment, their coach down and was lost for words at half-time last week. Sorry Tigerholic and the rest of the Tigers fans but Tigers will lose here to make it 7 in a row. The good sign will be that they'll improve I think but that's about it.

Eels by 8- This is going to be a cracker. Eels to bounce back and get the win here.

Panthers by 2- Panthers in yet another close game at the chilly Carrington Park.

Roosters by 20- With the return of Pearce, Liu and Warea-Hargraves makes the Roosters almost full-strength and they'll smash the woeful Knights here who play horrific away from home.

Cowboys by 14- Cowboys too good and classy here. Cowboys full-strength and on fire. There 1, 6, 7 and 9 are top-class. Manly got some injuries but also got a couple of players returning which'll help their cause but in saying that, Cowboys too classy so Cowboys for me.

Dragons of course by 8- Warriors too many good players out. Yes, Dragons have Joel Thompson facing a ban and Mitch Rein injured from the last game who's named and if he plays, might not be 100%. Of course I'll pick the Dragons to win here. Defence will get us the win. Warriors too depleted at the moment.

Storm by 10- You know what, Titans haven't played bad in most of their losses in their losing streak at the moment. Titans will definitely compete and challenge the Storm. But based on the way the Storm played last week and the classy players that they have. Don't forget their finesse, the Storm to get the chocolates here. By the way, the Storm have the same game plan which sometimes works, sometimes doesn't like I've said before. I think it'll work here.

Last but not least, the Sharks by 2- Toss of the coin job this one. I had trouble tipping this game. But based on McCullough's injury and the good defender that he is. It'll make a little difference in their defence in the middle or at the ruck. Nikorima replaces him in that position which'll definitely spark their attack, but defence will be a bit different I believe with Nikorima there instead of McCullough. I'm not doubting Nikorima's defence, his defence has improved in recent matches, and he's a great defender Nikorima, but not as great as McCullough who makes much more tackles. Both great attacking teams. Should be a cracking match. Sharks here just, only just.

Fortress eagle's picture

Here are my tips for round 9 I know we have some injuries but we have players comming back we need to win at the fortress soon after a couple of lossess cherry Evans back Api and dylan playing well forward battle wins this game and we have that to match them I smell an upset the mighty eagles to win by 8. The rest sharks the eels the panthers the rabbits the warriors the storm and the roosters good luck everyone and go the mighty eaglesssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Potato's picture

People got all huffy because the Bunker intervened to make a correct call. They didn't get huffy about the call itself, they got all huffy because the Bunker chose to correct the ref. The right call was made and that is what we need more of, correct calls that it, not necessarily needing the Bunker.

Aren't we also so lucky to score the last 17 points against the Broncos. Thank our lucky stars.

a's picture

The Bunker is rubbish

Coach Potato's picture

If only Ted Bullpit from Kingswood Country was still around. He'd sure know what to do with the Bunker.

Coach Potato's picture

Watch for players to be badly injured at Carrington Park, Bathurst. If not this time, then next time. Not because of anything illegal. Because its the once a year Panthers take a game to be played on a substandard field. Even a light drizzle doesnt drain away, and the place is as hard as a rock. So heaven forbid, there's a light drizzle next Saturday. They'll be playing on 1/a slippery surface that's 2/as hard as a rock. If that combination sounds like an issue to anyone, you probably possess some common sense. Wish Panthers powerbrokers had more. Taking games to the country is a great thing. I just don't like Carrington Park. It's dangerous.

Coach Potato's picture

Oh god. Whatever you do don't Google Bathurst weather and look at Saturday's forecast :/

Rocket Ryan's picture

Round 20 seems so far far away but rest assured coach we are waiting and i will make sure i am at the game.

Coach Potato's picture

I'll make sure I take you cry.

Coach Potato's picture

Sorry I meant 'tape'.Damn crook spelling is catching.

Baggy_Gee's picture

It comes back to consistency, it was lovely to see another 2 sin binnings after the Norman one, I feel better about the call, correct as it was. I am OK as well with the Bunker over riding the ref on the field. Now if only we were using the data from the players recorders to generate line on the field to judge quickly offside and the 10M radius. Instant call from the Bunker "10 white offside" would make the game a lot faster and more consistent. Strange how much everyone is using that word these days.

Steel Panther's picture

Another player who should have been sin binned on the weekend was Michael Ennis for his totally unnecessary cheap shoulder charge into the back of Matt Moylan which sparked a flare up after the Lewis hit. How tough charging into someones back. Players who play the game like he does are a blight on the game. He has a partner in crime in Andrew Fifita. Bin these boneheads for acts of such stupidity !!! And to think Ennis was the hooker for NSW in the 52-6 drubbing by Q'land last year. Go figure....

All the bunker has done is made refs more indecisive & rely on someone else to make the call for them & it's just not good enough , we as fans should be getting more than that we certainly pay enough .

chooks's picture

agree Christine. the bunker should be used for looking at tries only. refs and touch judges should go back to making on field decisions. they no longer have the guts to make the hard calls. The Roosters game on Monday was a complete shambles...I teach my boy's to play the whistle and respect the ref but Monday's game would have tested me as well.

Coach your team is playing well but only winning (or losing) by a point or two. When they have some big wins or better still keep the opposition scoreless then you can start pounding your chest.

Here are my tips

Rabbitohs by 8 I thinks Souths will strike back here with a win over Tigers

Eels by 1 It should be a thiller here with Eels to just get home

Panthers by 6 Segeyao back I think Panthers will strike back

Roosters by 16 Roosters welcome back their full strength team if they don't win here their is something really wrong with them

Cowboys by 10 Cowboys should be able to beat the worst team T.H.E B.E.ST T.E.A.M E.V.E.R T.O B.E.A.T T.H.E W.O.R.S.T T.E.A.M E.V.E.R

Dragons by 2 Dragons always beat Warriors that will continue here

Storm by 6 their performance on MONDAY night convince me to tip them

Broncos by 1 Will be a thriller here with the Broncos to win

We seem to be having a few issues this round. If you can't open the tipping form just add your tips in the comments section here and we'll work it all out.

Apologies for the issues. I had to build this page away from home as I'm having some internet issues with my provider.....I suspect that is part of the problem.

WOW Fortress Eagle that's a big call mate. No doubt you have been a club to fear in the past. BUT the Cowboys will give you a hiding. The past is the past and while it's nice to dwell in in it. It has nothing to do with what's happening now.
Rocket, don't be too hard on Tigerholic. His club is doing it tough but will come back.
Coach hates the QLDers save your comments for him. It's fun I do it all the time.
First SOO is June 1...lets see what Coach has to say then.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Mark what's the point of passionately following and supporting your team if the only time you can celebrate/beat your chest is when the drub the opponents? I think getting fired up over a close win/lose is better than trying to get excited by a 53-0 beating of a broken team. I'm proud of the first 64 minutes the BOYS put together last week against the team from PNG. Shattered that we dropped 16 points in the last 10, but we did a hell of a lot better than some other teams that have played them at home.

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Back to the good ol’ days. Got 4/8 and the trusty 50%. Oh well, could’ve been worse I suppose. Anyway, I should get this thing started as I need to go off and start getting things organised for my holiday to Thailand Saturday morning. Taking off at 6.30AM so not a lot of time left to get things tidied up.

Not really worried about letting you guys see what I’m picking as hopefully, you’ll ignore them given my woeful form thus far. Thanks to the Boss and his awesome Helper for weaving their magic and fixing my tips while I’m away. Newbie appreciates it! Cheers.

No time at all to research and ponder on upcoming games but for what it’s worth, here’s my tips. Would love to get back and see I’ve got at least one perfect round but …

This weekend (Round 9)
- Rabbitohs
- Eels
- Panthers
- Roosters
- Cowboys
- Warriors
- Titans
- Broncos

P.S. When crazy people walk through the forest, do they take the psycho path? Hmmm…

Round 10
- Dragons
- Eels
- Panthers
- Cowboys
- Broncos
- Sharks
- Bulldogs
- Roosters

If a parsley farmer loses a law suit, do they garnish his wages? Hmmm…

Round 11
- Rabbitohs
- Cowboys
- Tigers
- Warriors
- Sharks
- Panthers
- Bulldogs
- Eels

Can you plan a surprise birthday party for a psychic? Hmmm…

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Talk to all in about a month’s time. Cheers.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Right, lets get this party started.
Rabbits - Both teams got thumped last start. The rabbits got thumped less. But the "wonderful thing about Tigger is Tigger are wonderful things, Their tops are made out of rubber, their bottoms made out of springs." Which means that any direction JT gives them will bounce off their ears, and an ass kicking will not dent it. It is obvious that JT's days are numbered and that the next poor sap will have the same problems. Thumper to do some thumping.

Eels - Do I really need to explain this one? Love the BOYS, hate the idea of travelling 10 minutes or so to the Dogs home ground for OUR home game. We're not to great at ANZ but the BOYS will lift after putting the Cowboys to the sword for a bit last week.

Panthers - I'll argue that last week is not really reflective of how the Raiders are going. The Knights might have been able to go through that Tiger defence like a packet of salts. When your losing by small margins you tend to look at gaol kickers more than defence and the Panthers I think have the starch to make the Raiders back down to plan ZZ.

Roosters - Flip a coin, Players coming back into the side off set by a very young team. Not sure how well that guy, and Hargraves will go after resting for 1/3 of the season, but the Rooster fans will be praying they bring the thunder and lightning. Rooster SHOULD get the job done for only the second time this year.

Cowboys - There is a chance that Manly can get up at home, but Buckley also had a chance of being rescued. 2 mostly mended players against a team that wins, not a good look.

Dragons - The Warriors are a confidence team. A con-team if you will, while the Dragons are proving that they can play football, just not with the top teams. The Warriors are not a top team and that leaves the Dragons with what should be a nice win over the ditch.

Storm - Likewise sometimes all you have to do is give the great players of our game a sniff to help them back in to form, and I fear that the Storm were being played back into form last week. This isn't particularly great news for the Titans after a bit of a let down in golden kick-a-thon.

Broncos - Nothing would give me more pleasure than the Ponies going down away from home and on a Sunday afternoon as well. But nothing I can see in the team gives me reason to think that might happen. The outs are balanced by the ins and while they comfortably disposed of the Rabbits, the Sharks were pushed by the Panthers. A good game that should keep the Broncos comfortably at the front of the field.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Good news for people interested in the Ladder 5th and 6th will be separated by more than points differential come Friday night.

Fortress eagle's picture

Mark I don't live in the past but cowboy seems to think his club is so great cause they have had 1 and half good seasons we have had 5 decades of it how can I compare a giant of the nrl to a club with 1 title to there name I'm very confident we can win Saturday nite yes the snake and tom are out but we have very good players comming back and I heard Jamie buruer could play a real tough nut we do have the forwards to match them this could be a lot closer than what people think the Cows are due for a loss expect them to be off on Saturday One more thing congratulations to one of the greatest centres of the modern era if not the best the Lyon king what a champion player and a champion bloke going to miss you mate let's hope the boys can send you out a winner u deserve it mate and ivill be at the fortress cheering you and the boys on I know it's going to be a tough game but we can do it and start to make them all take notice big crowd big game and hopefully a great win to the greatest of them all the mighty eagles forever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
