Round nine selections

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Wests Tigers – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

It seems a long time ago, but it wasn't, when the Rabbitohs and Tigers were at the top of the table. Both teams won their first two games of the season, and by convincing margins. The Bunnies scored 90 points in their first two outings, but they haven't scored 20 points in a game since. The Tigers scored 70 points in their first two outings, and have scored 20 points in a game just once since. I'm no mathemagician, but if you want to win games you need to be scoring points. Last weekend the Tigers conceded 60 in what will probably be their low water mark in season 2016 - at least I hope it was. We're likely to see a Dead Tigger Bounce on Thursday night but how high can Tigger bounce? These two teams have managed just one win between them in the last six rounds, but at least the Bunnies had a go last Friday night. Clearly the Tigers put the cue in the rack against the Raiders, and that's not rugby league. Not the rugby league I like I tells ya. Neither team can be tipped with confidence but I can't the Tigers full stop.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4

Result - Tigers 30 defeated Rabbitohs 22

Parramatta Eels vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

These sides met back in round three on this night at this venue, and the Eels absolutely dominated. The Bulldogs scored a consolation try to make the score (look) respectable, but all respect was with the Eels that night. Their forwards were expected to crumble under Bulldog pressure but crumble they did not. What makes that performance even more impressive is that they were without Nathan Peats and Manu Ma'u in that game, and both players are lacing on boots on Friday. Semi 'The Big Australian' Radradra scored two tries in round three in one of his best performances thus far. Given his recent call-up to national honours another big game wouldn't surprise. The Bulldogs are hard to get a read on this season - they drift in and out of games like a truck driver 42 hours into a 48 hour shift. If they're on they'll win, but they're on less often than Bert Newton at the minute.

Verdict – Eels by 8

Result - Eels 20 defeated Bulldogs 12

Penrith Panthers vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Carrington Park

Last week I pointed out how much the Panthers were scoring every round. They maintained the pattern in round 8 so I may as well point it out again - 22, 16, 23, 12, 20, 18, 16, 18. It doesn't seem to matter whether they're playing the Broncos or the Roosters, the Panthers score about the same number of points every game. The Raiders usually score more points than that, including in round one when they beat the Panthers 30-22 in Canberra. Now this game isn't in Canberra but it's not in Penrith either. Segeyaro returns this week, with Wallace switching back to the halves to replace the injured Martin. That's a darn good spine the Panthers have there (Segeyaro, Wallace, Soward and Moylan), but it might take them a week or two to gel. The Raiders are outsiders but backable at the price.

Verdict – Raiders by 2

Result - Panthers 19 defeated Raiders 18

Sydney Roosters vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – Allianz Stadium

I've an uneasy feeling saying this, but the Roosters are rolled-gold, lock-of-the-week, get-in-the-queue, red-spot specials this week. Everyone's favourite dog handler is back and he's bringing Waerea-Hargreaves with him. Those two will be desperate to get off the leash and onto the field. Here's to you Mrs Robinson had a bit of a spray after the ANZAC Day game, but let's be blunt - when you let your opponent get out to an 18-0 lead you can't afford a single dud call from an official. Laugh about it shout about it when you've got to choose. Every way you look at it you lose. The Knights have named a squad of 20 for this game so it's hard to know what their team will look like, but they haven't named Mullen and this very young Knights side will struggle without an experienced organiser and playmaker.

Verdict – Roosters by 20

Result - Roosters 38 defeated Knights 0

Manly Sea Eagles vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Brookvale Oval

The big news leading into this game is that Sea Eagles captain Jamie Lyon has announced he will retire at the end of this season so he can focus on representative footy. Hyuk hyuk hyuk....I like that one....well done Thinker old chap. Regardless of whatever sense of occasion the Lyon announcement brings, the Cowboys are too good. Far too good.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result - Cowboys 34 defeated Sea Eagles 18

New Zealand Warriors vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

It looks like those bookies are going to let me back the Dragons again this weekend. Granted they have to travel all the way from Sydney to Auckland, but the Warriors have to travel all the way from Melbourne to Auckland. If this game were in Sydney I suspect the Dragons would be favourites, but the Dragons have won 6 from 9 at Mt Smart. In fact, the Dragons have only lost to the Warriors four times anywhere. Warriors coach Andrew McFadden shook the cage and told everyone to lift their game or else. That didn't work last time and I've no reason to believe it will work this time. Mannering out. Lolohea out. I can't have them.

Verdict – Dragons by 4

Result - Warriors 26 defeated Dragons 10

Gold Coast Titans vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

The Storm haven't unleased in attack too often this season, but they did last week and they did in round two when they played the Titans in Melbourne. Billy Slater was a late withdrawal from that game and the virtually unknown Curtis Scott stepped in to fill the void. A 42-0 victory last round is difficult to ignore, even if the opposition that day was questionable. While the Titans have shown plenty of competitive spirit in recent weeks they've still lost four games in a row. I've no doubt they'll be competitive again this Sunday, but they're facing a team who know how to win the close games better than anyone else.

Verdict – Storm by 1

Result - Storm 38 defeated Titans 0

Cronulla Sharks vs Brisbane Broncos – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

Those in the Shire are getting a little bit excited about their team in season 2016...and that's okay. They're winning games and they're playing with an expansive flair that we haven't seen from Cronulla for many years. But....and there's always a but, the Broncos have conceded just one try in their last three games. Cronulla are one of the form teams in the competition but the Broncos are the form team in the competition. Nikorima will be tested by the Cronulla forwards in the nine jersey as he takes on more minutes, but the return of Alex Glenn for the visitors eases some of my concerns on that front. It's the game of the round and it will go to the wire. Broncos...just

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Sharks 30 defeated Broncos 28

Elijah Taylor has left Panthers to join Tigers. Ivan Cleary can't be too far behind. Looks like Coach you'll be better off being a Tigers fan from now on ... ;-D

mark ashford's picture

Yes Coach Broncs got a lesson in "DON'T START SLOW" Bennets "Oh they were thinking about the test" is crap. They are supposed to be a professional team and should only have had eyes for the game.
Thought Hodkinson try was a double movement but hey that's the refs and it is what it was called.
I don't like to bag the officials so will take it on the chin.
The Broncs will bounce back...no problem.
Fortress not all us Qlders are Manly haters. In fact I admire that they have featured in the finals so many times in the past 20 years.
That silvertails crap finished with the salary cap.
I do think some of the personal attacks on this site are getting out of hand and would like to see some "chill pills" taken.

Personal attacks are limited to me and Coach OK (kidding of course)

mark ashford's picture

Fortress, one thing more.
Couldn't understand the sacking of Toovey.
Watched him play for Manly and the Blues and there was no tougher player. Bashed and bloodied almost weekly but he always got up to carry on. Never a dive in Tooveys play. Had amazing passion for his club and state.
Always thought he took that passion to his coaching.
Big shoes to fill after Des (that's Dogs Des)
Anyone know where Tooves is now?

Coach Potato's picture

I knew it. I knew there was more to the Jamie Lyon retirement than met the eye. Yes sports fans, as soon as round 26 is done, he's off to join the rest of the athletes in Rio. That's right. He's been training hard and it's all paying off now. He's an Olympic diver. I'm sure he'll win Gold.

mark ashford's picture

Ah Coach Ah Coach...can't we show some respect for one of our senior, better players?
Didn't see the game so can't criticise too much.
BUT Jamie Lyon. Surely is a legend of the game.
Perhaps you would like to put Mr Soward up against him?
No coincidence that he rhymes with coward?
At least JL takes on the line.

Coach Potato's picture

Make peace before the game hey Mark? Then you don't have to cop if there's an upset?

Where were you post-game yesterday and what did Trent Hodkinson have to do with anything. He didn't score a try. I don't think he's scored a try this year. Did you mean Chad Townsend? Sounds similar I know. Was close but no, not a double movement. In any case you can make 167 movements if noone has there hands on you.

The Panthers and The Sharks, both the "Semi-Centurians" too good for you so far. (Even though Sharks + JR still think their 50th is next year)

mark ashford's picture

Coach if the ball touches the ground and then you propel it over the line you don't need any hands on you, it's a double movement.
Unless your momentum carries you over the line.
Thought you would know that.
Yes we've gone down to your Panthers and the Sharks but not by much.
So I congratulate you and the Sharkies supporters.
We only have to wait and see what the rest of the season brings.
Maybe we should all be aware of the Storm, just quietly achieving.
If your Panthers beat the Warriors then I will start to worry
Good luck to your team Coach!
You both have teams to be feared this year

mark ashford's picture

Sorry the last line should have appeared under "Sharkies supporters"

Coach Potato's picture

You're 100% Mark.
100% wrong that is. No one on you, you are entitled to make as many movements as you like.

Maybe the defeat will sit more comfortably now you know this was as fair a try as you will see.

BigPeteBx's picture

I enjoy having a chat here......but not from 1.27am to 3.30am mate.
Do you do shift work Manly Bro?
Or better still, did you stay up to watch Man Utd and Leicester.
A draw, but mate I'm packing it in Fox Sports EPL Tipping comp that I am in. I was 330 points in front and the bloke coming second (who I coached his son years ago) got 445 pts this week and is now only 20 pts behind me.
He stuck his joker on Swansea to beat Liverpool and he go it.

Yeah mate, when at the top of a ladder, there is only one way and that is down. Would be good to meet or to get Thinker to send either of our home email addresses in confidence, with both us approving.
I met Rex Mossop years ago 1972 at Mackay at Federal Hotel when he was making the Tooheys Marlin Fishing advert. But I knew he played rugby with a good Bathurst ex railway mate of mine's dad. Here another blast for you. Rex played rugby and did surf life saving with Manly along with my mates dad and Dempsey Joy and Norman May.

Still in hiding, hey Rocket?
That Groucho Marx face mask ain't gonna work forever.
You make people laugh though which is the main thing.

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks for that Fortress.
Yes I know of the team song. I phoned the club the other day and it comes on as background theme or when on hold. Keep up that clapping Fortress as rugby league has taken a leaf out of English soccer (football) fans book. It actually makes it look as though league fans are really patriotic towards their team. It can only get better and I hope your singing is as good.
Cheers - Big Pete

Coach Potato's picture

You mean they even do the Eagle Rock at 34-18? Bloody party animals those Manly fans.

a's picture

Eels might not play finals football

Fortress eagle's picture

And thanks to you big Pete yeah to have the atmosphere at a big game gets everyone involved and it lifts the team.yeah we can meet can u imagine all the great stories we could tell wow. Coach yes we are party animals down hear at the fortress always a happy Crowd us mighty eagles supporters are what rugby league is all about passion guts deteinatiom never say die and that's what our great team is so it's like a family at the start of the year I had the eagles the sharks and the panthers as threats to the broncos and cowgirls I think still early days yet but those teams could be a threat I'm so finals with proper refs and no injuries the comp winner will come from one of those teams big call but that's my opinion and as always go the mighty sea eaglessssssss!!!!!!!!!

Coach Potato's picture

Radradra's financial winfall for wearing Green and Gold this week should be classed as another 3rd party payment.

How disgraceful that a players first thought about wearing this great Jersey is how much money you get paid.

Coach Potato's picture

The bloke that shouts out "Manly..(clap clap clap)..Manly (clap clap clap) " then repeats first two lines until maroon in face, why doesn't he just use a megaphone? His vocal cords are going to detach sooner or later. He'll be buggered then.

BigPeteBx's picture

Agree with you there Mark - Tooves was a warrior and a great team leader. I know he is a number cruncher (CPA/Accountant) and was back in that market watching the business world go round.
I dont know the firm but seem to recall that they were located near Brookvale. I'm just going off memory from when before he took to coaching.
I read on 2MMM early March 2016, that he was ALSO biding his time, to coach back in NRL.
Cheers - Big Pete in Bx

Baggy_Gee's picture

I go away to work on a public holiday and have more work to catch up here than there.
Agreed Mark, it's fine to take pot shots at people but the line has been crossed, lets get this back to being civil and ribbing on each others teams.
Just kill City Country or make it a proper trial game for the NSW Origin team, as it is it seems to be a, "well mate you missed it this year. Here have a rep selection for C/C." Waste of time and like the all star game and the nines I hate the BOYS playing because the team should be aiming for the premiership, not a meaning less trophy and some cash. Look at poor Manly, 2 nines tournaments, 2 years starting with several serious injuries.
And on both the double movement, was he touched as the arm carrying the ball hit the ground? if so double movement, if he went down and no one was touching him, up and play on. But, damn my eyes, to agree with Gus where are players playing the ball, or running a line suppose to go, they can't vanish, yes there are times when the line run is to make it impossible for the defensive line, like Thaiday vs the Bunnies, he was in front of the ball runner and interfered with the line. But you put him behind the ball player and make him a creditable target, then he just can't stop from full pace. Same as the Panthers player, play the ball can't disappear because it's better for the Raiders if he does. Rubbish.

Coach Potato's picture

"I'm still learning the National Anthem" , Radradra says.

Enough.

TV will be on Friday night, but will be completely happy to watch the AFL.

BigPeteBx's picture

Correct Coach - Happy and friendly "party animals".
Actually I found many a Penrith fan like that after a couple of trips to Penrith over the years. People we were travelling with actually parked the car at Panthers Club when we tripped on in to Homebush for the last night of Athletics at Sydney 2000 Games. A workmate and I also did it, when The Olympic Club presented me with two free tickets to the Dress Rehearsal of Opening Ceremony of Sydney 2000 Games.
Found it very switched on and friendly out there, at that time. Must love their sport like us Country Hicks.

Cheers - Big Pete in Bx

good day to you mark asford i think the club wanted to move in a different direction tooves is a legend of manly always will be the toughest pound for pound player ever he will always be a clb legend i think they wanred a fresh start trent is doinfg a good job he needs time to mould the team almost 16 years of been on top consistantly great in that time mate i agree with you the personal attacke on this site its not good.we aere all very passsionate bout our teams but if u look at cowgirl he comes on here yes his team has done well the last year and half but before they have a resume to rival the giants live the eagles the broncos the storm the bulldogs then he has no case i mean these clubs not have only won many titles but look at there records the eagles have won most comps inn the modern era there semi final and finals records are unequelled wayne benett for a long time has said they are the yard stick for success and records.yet we get this idiot and i mean that with respect telling me his team are so great they won the comp last year great effort yes but history says always hard to win back to back i believe there is a twist to this years comp yet the broncos and the cowgirls have not had the 5 day turnarounds like rthe eagles have had not the injuries we have had when we get our full squad on the park the rep time and state of origin will not hinder us as say the broncs and the cows so i think thats going to be a telling factor yes the broncos and the cows are the favpourites but there is a long way to go and we will see once the rep games are over where everyone stands.anyway the game asuncorp will be a bueaty we get our troops back stewart ,tom jamie bruer, api so full strengh for the first time it will be a great game but we need to win see what happens, big pete thanks for your comments mate yes we can meet we will talk bout it soon enjoy ur day everyone and as i always say go the mighty asea eaglessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Coach Potato's picture

Mark and Fortress Eagle, you both keep reading it all wrong.

Nothing 'a' says is about anyone personally. He talks about his team being the best + doesn't like Manly (a lot). Every footy fan is allowed to think their team is the best, plus have teams they hate with a passion. Tell me I'm wrong.

Fortress, on the other hand, you are often reduced to bad mouthing others. Eg "..yet we get this idiot, and I mean that with respect.."
Really? You respectfully call someone an idiot?!? This is the only personal attacking I am seeing on the page.

Myself, I'll take down someone's team whenever the opportunity arises, give people a stir if their team goes down, but I'm not attacking anyone's character.

Wen it comes to
Referees,
The Bunker,
The NRL itself,
and the Players.

Eg Refs making dud calls, NRL and its unfair practices, players taking dives, claiming tries they didnt score, surely people have a right to their opinions on these ones. This isn't communist China.

I do my share of stirring, but so what? I only ever talk about footy. Calling a ref a crook for a thousand different reasons is not a person attack. It's a pretty strong case based on a zillion examples. Calling a player a cheat because he feigned being obstructed, or being hit in a high tackle. That's not a personal attack. It's just the truth of the matter.

In the end I resolve, people will write what they want. Just know that I can't be, wont be, dragged down to that level of name calling. Other stuff is not attacking. It's just a case of people not agreeing, or not liking what they read. #KnowTheDifference

Tipping is just a game on the side, and doesnt mean anything. Doesn't mean you know more or less than the next. Most games are a toss of the coin. A bit like saying one guy won big on ANZAC Day,and the other guy did his ass, so the first guy must be better at two-up. Tipping is a bit of fun and it doesn't bother me being down the bottom. I know it won't always be that way.

Baggy_Gee's picture

A panthers supporter in the bottom of the tipping table while the Panthers hang on to the bottom of the 8. Coincidence? I think not. :D

The Thinker's picture

Breaking news - The Eels docked 12 competition points and fined $1 million.

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
Panthers into $1.35 to make the top eight - that $3.00 a few weeks ago is looking good now.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Where is the money going? Anyone know?

tigerholic's picture

What would have happened in regards to the punishment for the eels if they only had 6 points this year???

Baggy_Gee's picture

Probably only the 6 points, bit silly based on the fact that the initial punishment was 300k and 4 points. At least Foran now has a year to rebuild that Hamstring.

Hey Thinker, as an expert on all things injury, can you rebuild a muscle that is a chronic problem, or will this plague him his career?

Baggy_Gee's picture

And they are implying that if we keep winning more points will be taken off us.

The Thinker's picture

Baggy,
Hamstrings are possibly the only part of my body in good nick. I've dislocated just about everything else.

I believe the Storm fine was distributed equally among the other clubs...not sure about this one.

Almost feeling sorry for the Bulldogs - who have already played the Eels twice and lost both times.

And could that Cowboys loss to the Eels early in the season cost them the minor premiership or a final at home?

Baggy_Gee's picture

We shall see, but what now for a playing group that has formed into a tight unit? Play for nothing this year and go for the whole kit and kaboodle next year, or make the cut, try for the eight and break up some of the good combinations we have going? I personally would rather write this year off now, and work to 2017 when the cap is going to balloon than lose things like our right edge where Brad is going great with Clint owes-us-a-few tries, or some of our gun young forwards.

Baggy_Gee's picture

And just on a tipping point? Are we tipping the Eels to win and still get our point for the game or is it a free pass to get the point by tipping against them?

a's picture

Eels will not be able to play for any more competition points until it is fixed

Coach Potato's picture

#Baggy, how ironic you talking about where others are on tables. There's lines everywhere but I'll avoid putting the stake through the heart for now.

#How did it not make news until today that Canberra were over the cap in 90 and 91 !??? Panthers should have had two in a row. What a great effort that we beat the bastards in 91 regardless.

#Congrats to Leicester (pronounced Lester) City Football Club. Established 1884, and just won their first title in the top flight , EPL winners 2016. Greatest underdog championship win in the history of sport. 5000/1at one stage last August. No fluke either. Have only lost 3 of 36 games played. They aren't my team, but couldn't be happier for them. Thinker, Panthers 20 odd to one pales into significance.

#Fortress, will see if you continue as you do, as you feel you are doing nothing wrong, or whether you decide to add some class to your act

#Back on Parra, I wonder if Foran's issues are all to do with love and loss, or whether some of it revolves around arguably the one with the biggest 3rd party arrangements, and the magnifying glass about to bring him into focus.

#What next Thinker, Panthers into 5th line of betting?

BigPeteBx's picture

Good point Baggy - I think that needs to be addressed globally across all tipping and gambling sites - Nationally.
But.........I would say, you pick what you wish, but competition points dont get allocated to The Eels. Sounds a bit like Storm when they played for nothing.
Still wrong I feel. The Club should be hit in the pocket and fined hard.
Dont make the players the scapegoats and the supporters who inject their hard earned cash in supporting the Club. It makes you feel like giving up on the season and attending nothing.
This is one occasion The Eels werent too slippery!!!!!

Cheers Eels supporters - I do feel for you, as the sporting element (not admin), just got degraded.

Thanks Big Pete for the update on Toovey. Would love to see him back in the game someday. He was always the "enemy" me being a Qlder but I had great respect for him.
Coach your words on personal attack are correct. We are all entitled to our say just keep it nice.
Also think you might be right about the double movement thing. As long as the player doesn't lose control of the ball.
Fortress I enjoy reading your posts but have you ever heard about punctuation? Makes it very hard to read mate.
No love for Semi in the Aussie team.
Which one of our wingers missed out?...take your pick.

FEEL A LOT for the Eels players and fans. Wrong way to go.
Sack the board etc, fine them, but why punish the fans.
Eels could have been a big threat this year ...now who knows.
Interesting comment about Foran (hopefully wrong).

Well we all get a week off to lick our wounds and improve our picking.
I'm with you Coach bit hard to support Aussie with Semi there but I will. Go the GREEN & GOLD!!!!

BigPeteBx's picture

Good one Mark - Bronco's always bounce back. They enjoy losing through the regular season and take it as lessons learnt when it comes finals time.

There isnt too many Qlders that I know that hate Manly - they seem to like them due to some of the former playing staff that Manly had - bring on Choppy Close, Fatty V, Kerry Boustead, John Ribou, Rowdy Shearer, Owen Cunningham, Dave Brown etc.

Coach Potato's picture

Is there any chance Fortress is a Queenslander ? I think it would be great fun if you were.

No jibes if we are on the same side. Still processing that one.

mark ashford's picture

Yes Big Pete some great Qlders have played for Manly
Fatty one of the most known. (If you watch the footy show it would make you wonder) and now there is DCE how is yet to show his best.
Will be interesting this SOO with a couple of capable halves not available.
Thurston and Cronk (baring injury) should be enough.
They are better than anything NSW can put up IMO.
Fortress the Eagles have a good record against the Broncs at Suncorp will be a great game.
COACH Fortress was born in the shadow of the goalposts at Brookvale.
He was the first baby born in NSW wearing a Manly jumper.

A Qlder ...NO but you've got to admire his passion.
Wish he was a Qlder!
