Round ten selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canberra Raiders – Thursday night – Jubilee Oval

If you put me on the spot and asked me to name the three best teams in the NRL right now I would list the Cowboys, Broncos and Sharks. The Dragons have played all three, and in 240 minutes of football against those three sides they have scored a total of two points. They've scored 20 points in a game just once this season - against the team that were running last. The Raiders have only played one of those top three sides (the Sharks), and while they didn't win they did score 16 points. They've scored 20 points or more six times this season in nine games. Those numbers don't lie, but neither do these numbers - the Dragons have won as many games as the Raiders this season. So what we're left with is a home team that knows how to win in a grind against an away team that knows how to make the ball sing. I like singing.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result - Dragons 16 defeated Raiders 12

Parramatta Eels vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

I had the Eels pencilled in as certainties in this game, and while I still expect them to win there's an X factor at play on Friday night which I hadn't considered previously. Greg Inglis has moved into the halves (with Alex Johnston returning at fullback), and while he hasn't set the NRL alight this season this is the Recognise Round. GI did win a Clive Churchill in the six jersey, and he could easily drag himself off the ropes and give us a game to remember (and another goanna). For the Rabbitohs to win he would need to. The Eels have shown resilience throughout the season already and they'll be galvanised in front of what should be a packed Pirtek. No Foran, no Mannah...no matter.

Verdict – Eels by 8

Result - Rabbitohs 22 defeated Eels 20

Penrith Panthers vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – AMI Stadium (Christchurch)

It's déjà vu all over again with the Panthers, who keep scoring virtually identical totals each and every week. As a rule, 18-20 points isn't enough to beat the Warriors in New Zealand. In fact, the only sides to contain the Warriors attack this season have been the Broncos and the Storm (twice). The Panthers are a notch down from that level, but they're clearly better than the sides the Warriors have either beaten or competed with. The Panthers have lost Whare and Martin for the season, but the seventeen they've named this weekend is the same seventeen that can see them competing in September. This is a bloody good team, and if the key players stay fit and well, I expect the attack to click into gear and the floodgates to open. This looks like just the game to see that happen. Some big bodies return for the Warriors (Matulino, Thompson) on Saturday but there's plenty of forwards in that Panthers seventeen (Campbell-Gillard, Cartwright, Latimore, Fisher-Harris) that look like future Origin players to me eye.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result - Panthers 30 defeated Warriors 18

Melbourne Storm vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

Sometimes a statistic looks plain wrong - so wrong that you go back and check the figures yourself. Here's one of those now - the Storm have won 10 of the 13 games they've played at Suncorp. With a 77% win rate at this venue that puts them a long way in front of the Cowboys (38%) and, dare I say it, quite a way in front of the Broncos (61%). They're also heading north in a rich vein of form, racking up 80 points in their last two outings without conceding a point. Yet in the face of all that evidence I simply can't tip against the Cowboys on Saturday night. For years the Cowboys had their seasons derailed by injuries, but once again they can name their best seventeen this round. This seventeen were good enough to win one of the great grand finals and they're good enough to win this. There's but a handfull of tickets left if you're keen to be there - no doubt the NRL will take notes as they consider where to take the NRL grand final during the ANZ Stadium redevelopment. The game of the round.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Storm 15 defeated Cowboys 14

Manly Sea Eagles vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

There's no doubt the Broncos pack is weakened with the absence of Blair, Glenn and McCullough. Those three (and particularly Blair) play vital roles for the Broncos in defence. Despite that, the Broncos still have four Kangaroos in their starting pack. Wallace and Thaiday step into the starting thirteen while the biggest palindrome in the NRL (Ese'ese) gets a chance to show everyone how big he is and the Thinker gets a chance to find out how to pronounce his surname. Manly are warming into their season but the fact remains that their victories have (mostly) been over the teams that are struggling even more than they are. I'm tempted to back the Sea Eagles with the handicap start, but I can't back them to win.

Verdict – Broncos by 7

Result - Broncos 30 defeated Sea Eagles 6

Newcastle Knights vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

Anyone tipping the Knights to beat the Sharks hasn't been paying attention. The Sharks are $1.18 favourites on Sunday, and while $1.18 rarely looks like value in this competition I'm feeling tempted. Sharks = very good things.

Verdict – Sharks by 22

Result - Sharks 62 defeated Knights 0

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

I assume this is one of those Sunday games Will Hopoate is excused from on religious grounds - that could get very complicated if the Bulldogs make the finals. The Perrett brothers return to fill the void. The Tigers regular fullback is also unavailable for a few weeks with a shoulder injury. More important perhaps is the return of prop forwards Aaron Woods and Tim Grant - when you're facing the Bulldogs you want every prop forward you can get. Woods and Grant will earn their keep on Sunday, but they may find themselves a run short at the business end given their lack of match fitness. The Bulldogs are shorter than they should be, and I'm a little concerned with the inability of their halves to convert field position into points, but I'll tip them here. If they fail to deliver this weekend I may not tip them again.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 2

Result - Bulldogs 36 defeated Tigers 4

Gold Coast Titans vs Sydney Roosters – Monday night – Cbus Super Stadium

One big win over the Knights and the world seems convinced the Chooks are back. They might be, but they might not be either. Mitchell Pearce is a week-to-week proposition it seems, and he has to keep it together for much of the weekend on the Gold Coast before kick-off. We'll see how he goes. The Titans were awful last round but in that round we saw both the Tigers and Warriors bounce back from demoralising losses with impressive victories. I'm punting on the Titans rebounding off that horrible loss to the Storm with a vastly improved performance. They've shown plenty of competitive spirit this season and I'm optimistic we'll see it again. The Titans are underdogs (like Turnbull and Shorten) but sometimes the underdog salutes (like Turnbull.....or Shorten).

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result - Titans 26 defeated Roosters 6

Wally Lewis - round ten selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • DRAGONS vs Raiders
  • EELS vs Rabbitohs
  • PANTHERS vs Warriors
  • Storm vs COWBOYS
  • Sea Eagles vs BRONCOS
  • Knights vs SHARKS
  • Tigers vs BULLDOGS
  • Titans vs ROOSTERS

Greetings football fans....here's the tipping page for those that need to get their selections in early.

I'll have my previews and tips published on Wednesday morning.

All the best

So make yourself unavailable for rep duties and be stood down prior to the game. Eg the weekend before a State if Origin.

Last year Manly had a bye before each of the first two, so rule didn't apply but the Sunday before Origin III, they hosted Cronulla and ran out winners 28 - 16. Jamie Lyin' kicking 4 out of 5. .... Hang on. Manly flying in the face of the NRL by fielding Lyin' . How did they do it?

In 2014, Manly had .... a bye before the first two?! Ok I'm getting with the program now. The weekend before game III, Manly visited the Bulldogs and went down 23 - 16. Lyin' kicking 2 from 3. Yep. Cheated again . This time didn't prosper.

I could go back a decade but I think you get the idea.

What about this year? Two more byes before games I and III. Prior to game II they visit the Gold Coast on the Monday night. Lyin' shouldn't be playing that night, but he will be.

Teams out there are playing according to a rulebook that was tossed in a garbage bin, and there's more ways to cheat than feigning obstruction and going over the salary cap.

Fortress eagle's picture

Coach with all due respect he is entitled to choose weather he wants to play origin or not he made it Clear he wanted to just concentrate on his club games he didn't hide the fact I believe killer is as hounest as your going to get them.i mean look at the way he handled the news about his retirement no fanfare laid back understated past players have acted like they were running the red carpet at the oscars.rocket the only thing on the menu for you buddy is bronco stew don't be too cocky we have all our players back this is going to be very interesting and we do have a great record at suncorp getting bit nervy interesting if ur mob was to lose 2 in a row .expect the unexpected sport can bring heaos of surprises we are not Newcastle we do have match winners over the park and with snake brurer turbo and Api dylan killer matai and cheer Evans on deck forwards all on board I think this could be a lot closer than what the experts think, we have nothing to lose the pressure is on your mob and the refs who are sub standard to say the least, if ur mob win it was expected if my mob wins than we will be 4 points adrift of your top spot very interesting indeed. I have a feeling that your theory bout me getting u pizzas could come back to haunt you cause if we do happen to win than Brisbane in General May call a hunger strike which means more pizzas for the rest of us . Go the mighty eaglesssssssssssssssss

I wunder what brand of crystal ball the Thinker uses when making selections or does he rely on Mrs Robinson for inspiration

Hey a,

Hi Guys & Gals...here's mine for round 10.
Fortress had predicted some upsets and I think he's right. But which upsets are we able to pick?
As a Broncs supporter I'm scared of Panthers, Storm, Cowboys, Manly and Sharks (in no particular order) and maybe a couple of others Eels comes to mind.
COACH I seem to remember something years ago about Jamie Lyon wanting to retire to the bush league but was persuaded by the NRL to continue.
He agreed on the basis he was exempt from rep footy. So this if correct would shoot down your criticism
Anyway bring on round 10
Raiders (could go either way)
Eels (have something to prove)
Panthers (they better win Coach)
Cowboys (big call in Melbourne)
Broncos (a bit scared here)
Sharks (by plenty)
Doggies ( C'mon Tigerholic pick your Tiges)
and
Roosters (for my pal Newbie)

Thanks Thinker & LH....only 16 rounds to go!!!!

Coach Potato's picture

Ok then, so what's the difference between him and the Origin washed up Pearce? He may never be selected to play Origin again (fingers crossed) so why does this rule apply to him?

From the time Lyin' decided not to stay in the Origin kitchen he has never been stood down in this way.

Surely there's an advantage gained by Manly never having this bloke off the field for Manly or injured playing Origin. Surely players can't deliberately do that without there being some kind o penalty. Good on him if he doesn't want to play rep footy, but I think he rule should still apply. Finally envoked. Rested as a consequence of his decision.

THE MATCH WILL BE PLAYED AT SUNCORP STADIUM.

{17:35 Melbourne Storm v Nth Queensland Cowboys}

mark ashford's picture

Oops thank you" mark my words" you are of course correct. My bad.
Will still call the Cows even though there are heaps of Storm fans in Bris
as there are heaps of Cowboys fans as well.
Are you a Storm fan? If so I wish you well!

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

Hello everyone my tips for this week are:

The mighty Dragons by 7- The boys to get the win here in yet a another close game that Dragons will win.

Eels by 24- Yes Eels have a point to prove. They'll really prove a point here. They're playing for points for this game. They do have something to play for. They'll smash the woeful Bunnies here.

Panthers by 4- Panthers in no surprise, a close one.

Cowboys by 8- Cowboys will be too good here. Storm have played very well in the last few weeks. They have a big challenge here against the Cowboys. Cowboys will prove to be too hard of a team to beat for the Storm I think.

Broncos by 10- Broncos to win but not convincingly. Manly might produce an upset. But yeah I'm sticking with the Broncos here.

Sharks by 26- Sharks to smash the Knights here obviously.

Tigers to upset the Bulldogs by 6- Yes like I said, Tigers to upset Bulldogs here in a tight one.

And finally the Roosters by 42- This may come as a surprise not really sure, but I'm picking Roosters to demolish the Titans here. Which'll make things go from bad to worse for the Titans.

Thanks a lot everyone. Before I go, can someone tell me how to I put a picture on my profile on this site? I'm not sure how to do it and I've been wanting to do it for a long time. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Coach the difference is Jamie Lyon made a deal...simple.
Mitch Pearce has had a terrible time off field and has just come back from an enforced 8 week layoff. He has declared himself not ready or not able for SOO.
I admire him for that.
Wouldn't you like some of your Panthers to be there instead?
Maybe make a spot or two available for the Pennies?
SO why can't the guy play for his club? if he thinks he's not good enough for SOO?
Don't flog Pearce..the guy is just trying to do the best for NSW

Dragons Fan Boy
Great question mate I've been trying to put my ugly face up here for years and cant work out how. Maybe it's just too ugly!

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

Hahaha nah I'm sure that isn't the reason. I've tried techniques to do so but it hasn't worked.

mark ashford's picture

Come on someone help us out. If the Thinker is filtering out ugly or not then how do we do it?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Hi everybody! Been a while since I have talked about actual football and not the behind the scenes nonsense that is happening at home (Pirtek). So lets break with tradition and get these tips up.

Dragons - Both teams off a loss last week and both teams getting their attitude back, Raiders with some good attack and the Dragons breaking a massive losing streak before getting ambushed by the Warriors. Just feeling that defence will hold this game and the Dragons have been the far better defensive team over the last few years. The Raiders seemed to panic and crumble when the pressure was on against the Panthers so that would be the blue print to get the win.

Eels - Can't not back the BOYS. Scared that we might be kick starting the Rabbits season with the guys we have off for the week. If Peat's plays then we should be good, but if the Eels bow to the Titans demands for us to keep carrying some of his salary under the cap then we are looking uphill and its pretty bloody steep.

Warriors - Call me mad but the feeling is that the Warriors have something. A few games at home, a few wins, just starting to believe that they can put a performance together, and understanding what needs to happen to make them flow. Panthers won, but home game across the ditch isn't the way I'd like my team to face the Warriors.

Storm - Again with the feeling, the Storm have started to string tough no compromise wins together, and the Cowboys were struggling to get back into the game against the BOYS until Norman's brain fart. Again the moving of the venue to Brisbane helps the Cowboys more than the Storm weather wise, but if this cold snap holds I think both teams will enjoy the night.

Broncos - Form team against a team giving up their home ground advantage. Why would you, but what's done is done. Broncos are going to be to strong for the Manly team on the night.

Sharks - Knock off the front runners and then face the team stone cold motherless last? Always going to be a hard call to back the Knights, but this is the type of game the Sharks love to nearly lose or lose. High expectations from the fans and players alike and should see them boost that +/- for when it become vital at the end of the year.

Tigers - The returns for the Tigers are I think more mental than skill. Great players but the guys who have stepped in weren't mugs themselves. Think Aaron Woods leadership will be instrumental and the Dogs, 50/50 call on which team shows up. The hard part for me was the fact that it will be, like for Brisbane, another home game for the Dogs who get more "home" games than anyone in the competition. Tigers to prove some people wrong.

Roosters - Good win last start, against the Knights, but with everyone back on deck they clicked. Following Coach's streak theory, they might struggle to make the eight, but if a team has the players to prove it wrong it is the Roosters. Should be a interesting game and shouldn't be a blow out.

Coach Potato's picture

Only 3 teams in the last 20 years have scored 40 points in a season, and not been the minor premier.

Parra will have to basically be the minor premier 2016 if you added 12 points back at the end.

Have Parra shown themselves to be that good at any stage this year? Probably glimpses 'yes'. Other times 'no'. The 'yes' times had Foran at half. The 'no' times saw Foran watching from the bleachers. Plenty of 'no' times coming up you would have to think. Would be a tragedy in the making and a sad mirror image of society's dim view towards mental illness if Parra demand that Foran now return.

The big battle for me is the stigma that Parra have to wear each week. There was definitely periods in 2010 when it seemed obvious the Storm were worn out from the constant booing. Kind of like the Adam Goodes syndrome. Storm as good as they were could only finish 6th before their points were frozen.

Parra without Foran need to finish 1st or at worst 2nd. Is that possible. I reckons not.

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Baggy tried your my account thingy but couldn't find it. I guess I'm just an old illiterate bastard with little computer skills. But I'll keep trying maybe one day you can all see how ugly I am!
COACH Parra will be whatever Parra can be. If they get points this weekend (and I hope they do) then look out whoever they play cos these guys will have a point to prove.

Was at Suncorp last year whenwe copped a flogging, backing up again saturday night & I'd be happy as a one legged lesbian on a poco stick if we can turn the tables. Huge chance with Broncos missing Blair, there a bit flimsy up the middle without him. Hey Rocket did you get the job this week as Hoggy the pink pig or are you still on the bench. GO THE EAGLES

Awesome. And we're back for round ten with more rumours coming out today that another couple of NRL clubs are also being investigated for salary clubs breaches. Just looking at playing rosters for each of the teams that are left one of them has got to be Broncos. How they have been able to get away with it for so long, I don't know, but cool I have got my own suspicions. Seriously people I'm not going pretend to understand it but this is what I think been happening the last couple of months with NRL integrity unit at Broncos HQ : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nKNvikVWWsk Yeah ... Let's get on with this week's tips :

Raiders
Rabbitohs
Panthers
Storm
Broncos
Sharks
Tigers
Roosters

Yayness. Thank you Thinker. Thanks everybody. Good luck with all your picks. It's my birthday on Monday so if you don't hear from me next week it means I must of finally committed carbocide with large bucket of fried chicken and bottle of Southern Comfort. I have no regrets. Laters everybody ! ;-D

Souths won their last 9 out of 10 against them.. still no tim mannah or kieran foran.. peats is not gona be on his game.. my guess is refs calls go against eels. Inglis moves into 5/8 where he won his clive churchill medal..burgess will be steam rolling along with GI.. we'll just have to wait and see.

Fortress eagle's picture

Sea eagle 47 how are ya champion always good to have another mighty sea eagles supporter on board. Well mate rocket seems to think that we shouldn't turn up his mob are home and hosed I've told him that if his mob happens to lose that if he takes off into space to drop in his Uranus. I mean the only menu his going to be eating is bronco stew muck made by the local prison kitchen up in brissy the snake is back and we have done well so far for mine the broncos are expected to win the pressure is on them they cracked last week can we see a bigger crack this week we hope as big as Nathan hind marsh's. If we can contriol the ball good kicking game even possession and a fair ref to both sides this could be very interesting indeed we are more than capable if we bring our A game Milford is the key in my mind limit his time u do that than hunt is limited and the 3 there missing is bigger than rocket is making us believe looking forward to chatting more with ya eagle 47 and to you rocket we may shout you a lesbian and pogo stick if ur mob goes down she will have her girl friend u can please yourself with the stick and with pride and loyalty go the mighty sea eaglesssssssssssssssssss

Here are my tips

Raiders by 1 I think it is going to be a thriller here with Raiders to win by 1

Eels by 2 I think Eels are going to strike back after their salary cap and continue Rabbitohs misery

Panthers by 1 I think Panthers are going to win here

Cowboys by 6 The best team ever to win here

Broncos by 10 Broncos should beat Manly here

Sharks by 16 Sharks should win easy here

Bulldogs by 10 Bulldogs should beat Tigers

Rossters by 6 Roosters to continue good form here

Hey everyone, hope you are all doing OK,
I:m going the same as the thinker this week.
But most of all I think the cowboys will give the storm a bit of a touch up.
Also the Titans will want this one more and to make up for last week.
Would be a great double header in Brisbane, dirty that I couldn't make it.
Go QLD.

Coaches Who Not To Tip Round 10 (aka Coach's tips)

1. St George.
Hoodoo broken in fact Dragons have won the last 3.
Also their 1st game at Jubilee this year and next one not scheduled til Round 19. Can you believe that? Empty stadium policy definitely has something to answer for. They'll be a roar first game at "Home Home" this year. All Dragons.

2. Souths.
An Eels outfit reeling from this week's decision including players lost. Not to mention Foran. That loss will be a factor. Without him early in the season they were a rabble. Add to that a sellout at Pirtek and the pressure of a must win. All too much. Sadly, I think so.

3. Penrith.
A team with their heads screwed on playing a team with their heads permanently screwed off. Warriors I think determined to lose so the coach eventually gets sacked.

4. Melbourne. Storm hold an 11-6 win/loss record when playing away against the Cowboys. A home game played away but not in Townsville. Won't be as daunting as Townsville.

5. Brisbane.
Fullbacks coming back from hamstring injuries are always a dodgy proposition. Stewart was out Round 1 and 2 so who knows how long it was crook for in the off season, then it lasts another whole 5 weeks. Now it's ok? All sweet? I wouldn't count on it.

6. Cronulla.
I really wanted to tip the Knights here. Don't know why. Just did. Peer group pressure all too much in the end.

7. Wests.
No other reason. Just gotta get one back on Tigerholic.

8. Gold Coast.
Roosters fans more than just a bit cranky that they finish work @ 5pm, then need to get to the airport & check in by 5:40pm for the 6:10pm flight that arrives Gold Coast at 7:30pm. By the time they get to the game they will have missed the first half and some of the second, and then have to do the opposite to get back for work the next day. Ahh logistical nightmares. It's what dreams are made of.

Add Picture to A/c -

Hey there a, Dragons FB, Mark A and Fortress Eagle (about time you showed your colours Bro). See what I did with the Flag Flying.
That's what you call Flying the Flag!

Now Guys - firstly you need to create your picky or select one from whatever. Say you Google LA Lakers, Manly Sea Eagles, Parra Eels, Penrith Pussycats or whatever logo or graphic.

Pick which one you want to save and save it in one of your computers folders (like My Pictures). Then go and do what you have to with The Thinker site and Edit A/c or Add a Picture. Your home computer File Drive should appear and you just scroll across or down to the picture of the logo/graphic you saved and Add It or Load it.
See how that goes Lads!!!!!
Hope it helps....because I was also trying and bit the bullet and did it last Sunday. It might change later on - but like you long term tippers, you need to show your face or colours.
Not much use blowing a lot of wind and us others not knowing what flag is flying.

Cheers - Big Pete in Bx (West of The Sandstone Curtain)

Come on rocket make u a deal if we win u shout me a hottie if u win I shout you cool were all passionate bout our teams it will be a lot closer than what people think your mob are favourites but we have nothing to lose his hoping for a great game I think this will be the game of the round I just feel it I will be there so rocket don't blast off yet ok . Dr Google on hamstrings ...

Hamstring Strains

The hamstrings are by far the most commonly injured muscles in 100m sprinters, accounting for two-thirds of all injuries in this event. This shows that in maximal speed sprinting, the hamstring muscle group is close to its injury threshold.

Why are the hamstrings so frequently injured in football?

In sports played on big fields like soccer and Aussie Rules, players often have to run at maximum speed and so hamstring strains are always going to be a common injury in these sports. For this reason, rugby league and union wingers are also susceptible.

Why are hamstring strain recurrences so common and is it possible to play with a hamstring strain?

Although hamstring strains differ greatly in their severity, the ‘average' hamstring strain often requires about 4-6 weeks to fully repair, rather than the 2-3 weeks that most people think. Most players can come back before full repair by running with a slightly decreased stride length on the injured side. This compromises speed for protection against the injured hamstring. It is thought that players who are unable to alter their gait during this fragile recovery period are more prone to recurrent hamstring strains.

Coach Potato's picture

Looks like Snake with have a shortened stride this week and not nearly as fast, else he's going to risk re-injury ( as he is well familiar with ).

Fortress eagle's picture

Love the flag big Pete in x box so mageistic so magnificent I will be doing soon myself buddy thanks for the instructions mate nervouse with antisipation for Saturday nite it means a lot mate if we are to make a statement this year just hope the boys make us proud and give it there best shot that's all we ask for. I think sea eagle 47 is doing reverse sycology so not to jinx the eagles of course he wants the mighty eagkes to win they are his team but he thinks if he tips that way then he won't put the mocker on them. I hope I'm rite sea eagle 47 . I never ever ever ever a billon times never tip against my team natter what as the king eagle I have pride and complete confidence in my team just look at there record in the last 16 years or even better since the 70's with that record why wouldn't you. The mighty sea eagles forever.
