Round ten selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canberra Raiders – Thursday night – Jubilee Oval

If you put me on the spot and asked me to name the three best teams in the NRL right now I would list the Cowboys, Broncos and Sharks. The Dragons have played all three, and in 240 minutes of football against those three sides they have scored a total of two points. They've scored 20 points in a game just once this season - against the team that were running last. The Raiders have only played one of those top three sides (the Sharks), and while they didn't win they did score 16 points. They've scored 20 points or more six times this season in nine games. Those numbers don't lie, but neither do these numbers - the Dragons have won as many games as the Raiders this season. So what we're left with is a home team that knows how to win in a grind against an away team that knows how to make the ball sing. I like singing.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result - Dragons 16 defeated Raiders 12

Parramatta Eels vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

I had the Eels pencilled in as certainties in this game, and while I still expect them to win there's an X factor at play on Friday night which I hadn't considered previously. Greg Inglis has moved into the halves (with Alex Johnston returning at fullback), and while he hasn't set the NRL alight this season this is the Recognise Round. GI did win a Clive Churchill in the six jersey, and he could easily drag himself off the ropes and give us a game to remember (and another goanna). For the Rabbitohs to win he would need to. The Eels have shown resilience throughout the season already and they'll be galvanised in front of what should be a packed Pirtek. No Foran, no Mannah...no matter.

Verdict – Eels by 8

Result - Rabbitohs 22 defeated Eels 20

Penrith Panthers vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – AMI Stadium (Christchurch)

It's déjà vu all over again with the Panthers, who keep scoring virtually identical totals each and every week. As a rule, 18-20 points isn't enough to beat the Warriors in New Zealand. In fact, the only sides to contain the Warriors attack this season have been the Broncos and the Storm (twice). The Panthers are a notch down from that level, but they're clearly better than the sides the Warriors have either beaten or competed with. The Panthers have lost Whare and Martin for the season, but the seventeen they've named this weekend is the same seventeen that can see them competing in September. This is a bloody good team, and if the key players stay fit and well, I expect the attack to click into gear and the floodgates to open. This looks like just the game to see that happen. Some big bodies return for the Warriors (Matulino, Thompson) on Saturday but there's plenty of forwards in that Panthers seventeen (Campbell-Gillard, Cartwright, Latimore, Fisher-Harris) that look like future Origin players to me eye.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result - Panthers 30 defeated Warriors 18

Melbourne Storm vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

Sometimes a statistic looks plain wrong - so wrong that you go back and check the figures yourself. Here's one of those now - the Storm have won 10 of the 13 games they've played at Suncorp. With a 77% win rate at this venue that puts them a long way in front of the Cowboys (38%) and, dare I say it, quite a way in front of the Broncos (61%). They're also heading north in a rich vein of form, racking up 80 points in their last two outings without conceding a point. Yet in the face of all that evidence I simply can't tip against the Cowboys on Saturday night. For years the Cowboys had their seasons derailed by injuries, but once again they can name their best seventeen this round. This seventeen were good enough to win one of the great grand finals and they're good enough to win this. There's but a handfull of tickets left if you're keen to be there - no doubt the NRL will take notes as they consider where to take the NRL grand final during the ANZ Stadium redevelopment. The game of the round.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Storm 15 defeated Cowboys 14

Manly Sea Eagles vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

There's no doubt the Broncos pack is weakened with the absence of Blair, Glenn and McCullough. Those three (and particularly Blair) play vital roles for the Broncos in defence. Despite that, the Broncos still have four Kangaroos in their starting pack. Wallace and Thaiday step into the starting thirteen while the biggest palindrome in the NRL (Ese'ese) gets a chance to show everyone how big he is and the Thinker gets a chance to find out how to pronounce his surname. Manly are warming into their season but the fact remains that their victories have (mostly) been over the teams that are struggling even more than they are. I'm tempted to back the Sea Eagles with the handicap start, but I can't back them to win.

Verdict – Broncos by 7

Result - Broncos 30 defeated Sea Eagles 6

Newcastle Knights vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

Anyone tipping the Knights to beat the Sharks hasn't been paying attention. The Sharks are $1.18 favourites on Sunday, and while $1.18 rarely looks like value in this competition I'm feeling tempted. Sharks = very good things.

Verdict – Sharks by 22

Result - Sharks 62 defeated Knights 0

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

I assume this is one of those Sunday games Will Hopoate is excused from on religious grounds - that could get very complicated if the Bulldogs make the finals. The Perrett brothers return to fill the void. The Tigers regular fullback is also unavailable for a few weeks with a shoulder injury. More important perhaps is the return of prop forwards Aaron Woods and Tim Grant - when you're facing the Bulldogs you want every prop forward you can get. Woods and Grant will earn their keep on Sunday, but they may find themselves a run short at the business end given their lack of match fitness. The Bulldogs are shorter than they should be, and I'm a little concerned with the inability of their halves to convert field position into points, but I'll tip them here. If they fail to deliver this weekend I may not tip them again.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 2

Result - Bulldogs 36 defeated Tigers 4

Gold Coast Titans vs Sydney Roosters – Monday night – Cbus Super Stadium

One big win over the Knights and the world seems convinced the Chooks are back. They might be, but they might not be either. Mitchell Pearce is a week-to-week proposition it seems, and he has to keep it together for much of the weekend on the Gold Coast before kick-off. We'll see how he goes. The Titans were awful last round but in that round we saw both the Tigers and Warriors bounce back from demoralising losses with impressive victories. I'm punting on the Titans rebounding off that horrible loss to the Storm with a vastly improved performance. They've shown plenty of competitive spirit this season and I'm optimistic we'll see it again. The Titans are underdogs (like Turnbull and Shorten) but sometimes the underdog salutes (like Turnbull.....or Shorten).

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result - Titans 26 defeated Roosters 6

Wally Lewis - round ten selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • DRAGONS vs Raiders
  • EELS vs Rabbitohs
  • PANTHERS vs Warriors
  • Storm vs COWBOYS
  • Sea Eagles vs BRONCOS
  • Knights vs SHARKS
  • Tigers vs BULLDOGS

Can I offer one last piece of advice Mark? Perhaps something a little less offensive. ;P

mark ashford's picture

With regard to the Bunker. I think I saw a lot of bad calls this week on various matters, but with regard to foul play..
I read a story on the NRL site that Ricky and the other coaches agreed that the bunker should not interfere on foul play matters but leave it up to the on field refs.
As fans, what do we want from the bunker?
Constant stopping of play for adjudications?
Or just ruling on tries?
The tv commentators like to have their two bobs worth and constant slo-mo replays don't help.
No one is perfect and errors will happen even if we had 10 bunkers all reviewing the prior decisions, it still won't be perfect.
Manly's try in the right corner was a try. No forward pass. Could have lifted the guys to who knows what.

Does anyone agree that the refs seem to try and balance out the penalties?
Tigerholic Cam Smith is no "grub". Want a grub? have a look at Gallen , Ennis, J Reynolds (he has improved his game) and many who berate the refs.
Cam has captained his club, his state and his country in an outstanding manner and will one day be an immortal.
I think you look through blue glasses and don't like anyone from outside NSW.

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Baggy-Gee. I'll take it on board.
I'm also a Cowboys/Storm fan would something from there be better?

Rocket Ryan's picture

Well done mark that is a good one I love your colours
Tough game this week for us.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Rocket
Yes mate didn't want to use the same pic as you.
This week will be the big test for the Broncs.
Cowboys at home will be very difficult.
Blair will be back not sure about McCullough or Alex Glenn.
Dare I say....Broncs by a point?

Baggy_Gee's picture

O know we talk about a 16 club competition here, but there is really only one team that matters, and I don't think that they are on your list. Nice to see you got a pic up though.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy, I feel deeply for your Eels mate.
Management & agents should be crucified not the players and fans.
Thought you'd get the Bunnies but hey it was close.
Too many refs calls against you.
If Semi R isn't one of the best wingers I've ever seen I'll stand f------.
It's gonna be hard but there is a chance......keep the faith.
I know the cap is against you but any chance of snagging Hayne?
Maybe could do a Gasnier deal like the Dragons with a heavily end weighted contract.
I've heard Jarrod wont be eligible for Fiji.

christine's picture

Mark I got to say that picture is so you, well done mate .

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Christine...hope you are well!

Coach Potato's picture

Still not getting it are you Mark? Sure it's not any individual players fault, but why should the club get to break the cap but then also get to pick and choose who they keep and who they shed? Barring the 12 points they retain a huge advantage on field over the rest of the comp.

What fairness is being shown towards the fans of the other teams by letting Parra continue. Yes, that's right. None

Coach Potato's picture

Hi Mark, I hear Broncos don't get audited. I suggest they offer Hayne anything they like.

Coach Potato's picture

Balancing the argument, how is the Titans penalty of $300k fine and 4 points suspended not being compared. They broke the cap by as much if not more than Parra. If they didn't you would need to tell me that Prince's house was only a two bedroom fibro shoebox.

It's all too simple. The NRL needs to face a judge and jury. At the moment the only laws they follow are the ones they create on the run.

mark ashford's picture

Coach I get what you are saying but who are the super players currently under contract with the Eels?
Semi sure, Norman is a Broncs let go, Foran has been off the field more than on, so who else?
I think your Panthers prove the point that a team of good players can beat a team filled with so called superstars.
Remember it's 13 on 13 when the whistle is blown.
Doesn't matter how much you are being paid.
Does your pay packet make you so much better?
Are you saying your Panther players are easy beats because they don't get the huge (over the cap money)?
Don't think so.
Of course a club can pick and choose who they keep. As long as they are under the cap.
Isn't that how the Panthers operate or does someone else tell them who they can have in their roster?

Coach Potato's picture

Jennings, and to a lesser extent Gordon. Biggest bucks was paid to Foran. These are definitely the majority of the problem. Why do they all get to stay? Why aren't they all required to settle individually to a salary compliant contract? If their original contracts are effectively deemed illegal why not? If they don't like it , not enough, then guess what - they wouldn't have signed to play with Parra in the first place

Tailspin's picture

Listen, I'm over this salary cap shit, it's all over hopefully and we can get on with the game, the bunker is absolutely shit, you mose well piss the refs and linesman off cause they are too shit scared to make a call
and have 2000 people up in a box so they can stuff it up as well. Why don't we just keep it simple stupid, and make the rules that plain that you cant stuff it up, for #### sake, I'm over all the bad decisions that are stuffing up a great game. People pay good money to watch a fair game and so to do the bloody sponsors. lets get it right NRL.

mark ashford's picture

Coach now I really get it and you are right.
I believe Foran was on 1.5 mil not sure if that was cap money or included 3rd party crap.
If a club gets 6 or 7 mil under the cap how can they pay one player 1.5 of it
Is anyone worth that much?
Question of player greed and management rubbish comes into play.
If the gross bickies weren't offered Foran would still be at Manly.
Yes Coach I now get where you are coming from.

Where is Fortress???
Has he stayed in QLD?
Converted to a Broncs fan?
Come on Fortress I know it was a big defeat but we need you back at Brooky spruiking the mighty eagleeeessss.

Coach Potato's picture

Panthers have won their fair share of wooden spoons. Last year they played round 26 against Knights - where loser took the prize. Plenty of years like this. Not once have I disagreed with their low finishing positions. Had the lost that game it would have sat comfortably with me that we were the worst team.

Didn't make me ashamed of my team at all. Disappointed sure but that's all. If my team loses every game for the rest of the season and win the spoon. That's fine. Doesn't change anything.

Go all quiet because your team is down, says more than any 300 word post ever did.

Rick's picture

...............Happy Birthday JR ! All the best for a great day.

Coach Potato's picture

If anyone's interested in a sneaky peek at Coach's Streak Tables, here they are.

After a year of preaching to anyone and everyone, in case you may still be reading for the first time my theory is about winning and losing streaks. Two of more in a row makes a streak. Single wins (eg win followed by loss don't count). Add together a team's 3 best winning streaks and that's their Streak Score. Same deal for losing Streak Score. A zero score below means a team hasn't lost 2 in a row, or for the other table, hasn't won 2 in a row.

Since the dawn of footballing time, teams have needed a score of 10 or more to finish top 4. Doesn't guarantee top 4, but you need 10+ to get there.

It's also proven time and again that the Premier finishes round 26 with one if the 3 best streak scores.

The opposite is also fairly true with a losing streak score of 10 or more condemning that team to a bottom 4 finish.

Sharks have only once had a score of 10+ not made at least the Prelim. That was last year going out in Finals Week 2.

BRONCOS 7-------0
SHARKS 7-------0
STORM 7-------0
EELS 5-------0
COWBOYS 5-------0
DRAGONS 4-------4
BULLDOGS 2-------0
PANTHERS 2-------2
WARRIORS 2-------3
RAIDERS 2-------4
SEA EAGLES 2-------4
TITANS 2-------5
TIGERS 2-------6

Well done Mark for your picture it sure is nice

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans,

I've updated the tipping comp and the NRL ladder. The Eels are now down in last place with a positive points differential - a mathematical impossibility if not for the salary cap penalty. Almost as bizarrely the Dragons are in 7th but have the second worst points differential in the competition.

As for our tipping comp, Nik has joined Rick at the top - if only Footy Chick were third we'd have a rhyming top three. Top scorers in this round were Coach Potato and Nik with an impressive 7 from 8.

I'll have the round eleven tipping page published late tomorrow night for those who need to tip early. I should have my previews and tips published by around lunchtime on Wednesday.

All the best

Baggy_Gee's picture

Was that a shot across the bows Coach? I'm in it for the long haul come hell or high water. I will tip the Eels every round this season without fail and have already that it will cost me a shot at the top of the table. But lets put the boot on the other foot and ask any of the passionate fans here how they would feel if their team got shafted by both the players managers, board and the NRL. Pretty disappointed and let down, to make matter worse, just after losing Peats to the NRL up the coast, we have to deal with the fact the Hayne, one of the shining lights during the last couple of years, will in all likelihood come back and face us at a different club. You pick two of the more influential Panthers and tell me how you would swallow that, one poached by a NRL owned team, and the other coming back to oppose you. We'll take the hit, do our best to claw our way back up. But lets remember as Mark pointed out there have been massive fraudulent use of back ended deals to get players to come back to, or retain star players.

Coach Potato's picture

Sorry Baggy, was a shot across the the bows out Manly waters way.

Sorry if it somehow skewed up Brisbane waters way and you took a hit. You always comment win lose or draw. Not sure how you would think I was questioning yourself.

Coach Potato's picture

It's a still my view though that although the club's officials are at fault, I find it unbelievable( ie. I do not believe) that the current coach and previous coaches knew nothing about the salary cap situation. They are the ones in charge of recruiting and releasing. They must have known.

Barring all that, my point about Parra and it's fans is that the fairness thing is not just about Parra. It has brought unfairness to the whole comp. Fairness to Parra's fans and letting them play for points brings unfairness to other teams and their fans. I know that there are other teams that surely must be over the cap but I'm only using the "going with what ya know" policy.

Coach Potato's picture

**No, that first line was not meant to be written with an Italian accent

Coach Potato's picture

Here's something to show the steepness of Parra's Mount Everest attempt to make the 8.

Had points been lost by Cowboys or Broncos after round 9 last year, would either of them have made the finals? Answer: No.

Broncos led on 14 points. From round 10 on, they could only manage 10 wins out of the 15 + 2 byes, total 38.

Cowboys sat on 12 points. From round 10 on. they could only manage 11 wins out of the 15 + 2 byes, total 38.

Parra were asked before last week to exceed these efforts and win 12 out of 15.

Mount Everest insurmountable for mere mortals.

Coach Potato's picture

So Hayne wants to represent Fiji at the Olympics.
Why not Australia?

Was he born in Fiji?
Is he a resident of Fiji?
Does he hold a Fijian passport?
Does he hold Fijian citizenship?

Sure he has a Fijian parent, but is that good enough? I say not.

He has no more claim to represent Fiji, than Radradra has to represent Australia.

a's picture

Where will Hayne go to after that

Coach Potato's picture

Forget about Rugby 7s Jarryd, you can still select from long jump, high jump, discus, javelin, shot put, loads of running events, badminton, volleyball, handball, soccer, rowing, kayaking, sailing, archery, equestrian, boxing, cycling, diving, swimming, fencing, hockey, gymnastics, judo, tae kwondo, shooting, table tennis, water polo, weightlifting, or wrestling. ... and in 2 years time there's the Winter Olympics!

tigerholic's picture

Mark
I do have blue blood cursing through my veins, I love NSW and I love the Tigers. I have only picked my team once or twice this year and I'm even hesitant in taking them this week against the lowly Knights.

Cam Smith has always been a grub and he will always be a grub, if he becomes an immortal he will be an immortal grub, if he gets knighted he will be Sir Cam Smith the Grub, if you can't tell by now that I despise Qld than you need to re-read some of my comments.

Rocket, when will you come up with a post that actually has some content instead of all of these little digs at various people. I can see that you love stirring the pot and you take great delight in trying to get Coach to bite.

Bring on round 11.

The Thinker's picture

Responding to Coach,

It's hard to compare the Broncos and Cowboys to the Eels because the Queensland sides lose considerable talent to Origin duty.

Maybe Jennings gets a Blue jersey....maybe.

In any case, if they can't beat the Rabbitohs it is a mountain too high.

Graham's picture

How did Nik get 7 out of 8 in Round 10 NRL when he chose both Raiders and Eels in his selections and both lost their games for this round?
2 incorrect selections I assume would give him 6 not 7 out of 8 for Round 10.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Tigerholic your attack on cam smith is to me more sour grapes from a disheartened blues supporter it worries me not, you would be a sorry sight driving round town in a blues jersey with your tigers number plate too frightened to back your team show some support and ticker back your team they need it, you have become a joke to readers of this site.
You can afford to take them this week!

The Thinker's picture

Thanks Graham....I will check and adjust the scores if I stuffed it up.

And Graham is right. Nik scored 6 from 8...not seven. Thank you again.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Sorry that I mistook your point Coach, still feeling a bit tender about anything involving the BOYS. Todd said a lot of things that were good, but still nothings happening in the wider game, and suddenly a lot of mid season shuffling is happening. Always have and will be an advocate for a trade dead line starting from Mad Monday of the GF, and ending on the first weekend in December. That may mean that the NRL have a 4 month period to audit every club before season kick off. Might be a simple and quick answer.

Coach Potato's picture

2016 had so much promise for the Eels. I think Ricky Stuart and Brad Arthur bought some good players in the last few players.

I wonder how they knew what to offer prospective players. How they knew where the club was positioned re salary cap? I wonder how these coaches entered negotiations not having a clue what they were offering the players? Anyone out there sense there are wolves dressed up as sheep in all of this?

sorry i gave up putting my tips in here seeing as though i wasn't on the table although am currently on 50 in my other comp

Coach Potato's picture

Thinker, Broncos won every game through the entire Origin season last year May 27 to July 8 and Cowboys only lost 1 solitary game. One game between them and neither could take 12 of their last 15.

Does my comparison look any fairer to you now ?

The Thinker's picture

Slightly less unfair Coach, but I accept your point.

a's picture

Will you still submit on here parrafan

Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Hey thinker, just to tell you that you mistaken one of the tipping results for round 10. BroncoSwimmer got 4, not 5 out of 8 and also, you sad that Nik got 7 from 8, but he got 6 from 8. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Sorry my mistake I meant said not sad.

Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Oh never mind, you corrected Nik. But you still need to correct BroncoSwimmer's round 10 result. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!
