Round ten selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canberra Raiders – Thursday night – Jubilee Oval

If you put me on the spot and asked me to name the three best teams in the NRL right now I would list the Cowboys, Broncos and Sharks. The Dragons have played all three, and in 240 minutes of football against those three sides they have scored a total of two points. They've scored 20 points in a game just once this season - against the team that were running last. The Raiders have only played one of those top three sides (the Sharks), and while they didn't win they did score 16 points. They've scored 20 points or more six times this season in nine games. Those numbers don't lie, but neither do these numbers - the Dragons have won as many games as the Raiders this season. So what we're left with is a home team that knows how to win in a grind against an away team that knows how to make the ball sing. I like singing.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result - Dragons 16 defeated Raiders 12

Parramatta Eels vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

I had the Eels pencilled in as certainties in this game, and while I still expect them to win there's an X factor at play on Friday night which I hadn't considered previously. Greg Inglis has moved into the halves (with Alex Johnston returning at fullback), and while he hasn't set the NRL alight this season this is the Recognise Round. GI did win a Clive Churchill in the six jersey, and he could easily drag himself off the ropes and give us a game to remember (and another goanna). For the Rabbitohs to win he would need to. The Eels have shown resilience throughout the season already and they'll be galvanised in front of what should be a packed Pirtek. No Foran, no Mannah...no matter.

Verdict – Eels by 8

Result - Rabbitohs 22 defeated Eels 20

Penrith Panthers vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – AMI Stadium (Christchurch)

It's déjà vu all over again with the Panthers, who keep scoring virtually identical totals each and every week. As a rule, 18-20 points isn't enough to beat the Warriors in New Zealand. In fact, the only sides to contain the Warriors attack this season have been the Broncos and the Storm (twice). The Panthers are a notch down from that level, but they're clearly better than the sides the Warriors have either beaten or competed with. The Panthers have lost Whare and Martin for the season, but the seventeen they've named this weekend is the same seventeen that can see them competing in September. This is a bloody good team, and if the key players stay fit and well, I expect the attack to click into gear and the floodgates to open. This looks like just the game to see that happen. Some big bodies return for the Warriors (Matulino, Thompson) on Saturday but there's plenty of forwards in that Panthers seventeen (Campbell-Gillard, Cartwright, Latimore, Fisher-Harris) that look like future Origin players to me eye.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result - Panthers 30 defeated Warriors 18

Melbourne Storm vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

Sometimes a statistic looks plain wrong - so wrong that you go back and check the figures yourself. Here's one of those now - the Storm have won 10 of the 13 games they've played at Suncorp. With a 77% win rate at this venue that puts them a long way in front of the Cowboys (38%) and, dare I say it, quite a way in front of the Broncos (61%). They're also heading north in a rich vein of form, racking up 80 points in their last two outings without conceding a point. Yet in the face of all that evidence I simply can't tip against the Cowboys on Saturday night. For years the Cowboys had their seasons derailed by injuries, but once again they can name their best seventeen this round. This seventeen were good enough to win one of the great grand finals and they're good enough to win this. There's but a handfull of tickets left if you're keen to be there - no doubt the NRL will take notes as they consider where to take the NRL grand final during the ANZ Stadium redevelopment. The game of the round.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Storm 15 defeated Cowboys 14

Manly Sea Eagles vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

There's no doubt the Broncos pack is weakened with the absence of Blair, Glenn and McCullough. Those three (and particularly Blair) play vital roles for the Broncos in defence. Despite that, the Broncos still have four Kangaroos in their starting pack. Wallace and Thaiday step into the starting thirteen while the biggest palindrome in the NRL (Ese'ese) gets a chance to show everyone how big he is and the Thinker gets a chance to find out how to pronounce his surname. Manly are warming into their season but the fact remains that their victories have (mostly) been over the teams that are struggling even more than they are. I'm tempted to back the Sea Eagles with the handicap start, but I can't back them to win.

Verdict – Broncos by 7

Result - Broncos 30 defeated Sea Eagles 6

Newcastle Knights vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

Anyone tipping the Knights to beat the Sharks hasn't been paying attention. The Sharks are $1.18 favourites on Sunday, and while $1.18 rarely looks like value in this competition I'm feeling tempted. Sharks = very good things.

Verdict – Sharks by 22

Result - Sharks 62 defeated Knights 0

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

I assume this is one of those Sunday games Will Hopoate is excused from on religious grounds - that could get very complicated if the Bulldogs make the finals. The Perrett brothers return to fill the void. The Tigers regular fullback is also unavailable for a few weeks with a shoulder injury. More important perhaps is the return of prop forwards Aaron Woods and Tim Grant - when you're facing the Bulldogs you want every prop forward you can get. Woods and Grant will earn their keep on Sunday, but they may find themselves a run short at the business end given their lack of match fitness. The Bulldogs are shorter than they should be, and I'm a little concerned with the inability of their halves to convert field position into points, but I'll tip them here. If they fail to deliver this weekend I may not tip them again.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 2

Result - Bulldogs 36 defeated Tigers 4

Gold Coast Titans vs Sydney Roosters – Monday night – Cbus Super Stadium

One big win over the Knights and the world seems convinced the Chooks are back. They might be, but they might not be either. Mitchell Pearce is a week-to-week proposition it seems, and he has to keep it together for much of the weekend on the Gold Coast before kick-off. We'll see how he goes. The Titans were awful last round but in that round we saw both the Tigers and Warriors bounce back from demoralising losses with impressive victories. I'm punting on the Titans rebounding off that horrible loss to the Storm with a vastly improved performance. They've shown plenty of competitive spirit this season and I'm optimistic we'll see it again. The Titans are underdogs (like Turnbull and Shorten) but sometimes the underdog salutes (like Turnbull.....or Shorten).

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result - Titans 26 defeated Roosters 6

Wally Lewis - round ten selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • EELS vs Rabbitohs
  • PANTHERS vs Warriors
  • Storm vs COWBOYS

Agree with Rocket and Tiger and (everyone).
The Bunker is shamefully bad.

It is meant to be the epitamy of the application of the rulebook, but just like the ref's themselves, week in week out, they set show to be influenced by a home crowd. Make decisions which are not in the rulebook. It's NRL rulebook on the run.

Does anyone $%&$ing realise though, it's not the Bunker itself. It's the people in it. They adjudicate on 8 games a week. They all need replacing. A fresh set of eyes is all that's needed. Keep the revolving door turning until the right set of judges are found. Right now, the current mob need to be shown the door.

Until then, I'm coining a new phrase.

A horrible call shall be named .... "a Skunker" !

Thanks Christine I wont

Baggy_Gee's picture

Again, any downwards pressure that is not controlled and not from the hands needs to be no try. This rubbish about grounding the ball with the lower left crease of the right buttock as long as the ball is on the ground is not cricket. I feel that the right call was made, same as the Bulldogs forward pass try, but in making a right call they went against the rule book. We definitely need an overhaul of the staff of the Bunker and there needs to be a clear explanation of why there are varying rule interpretations between games on the same weekend.

Where are you sitting

First streak score for Panthers. Only 2 but all streaks start with 2. Need to make it a good one.

Not happy about Panthers winning the odd penalty. Made a lier of me. No doubt though Latu and Soward will get spoken to by team officials quick smart that that crap is not part of the Panthers culture.

Coach Potato's picture

Both De Gois and Beau Scott charged with tripping, what used to be a send off. Neither even penalised onfield. Off field both escape suspension for saying yes I did this. It really doesn't make sense this game.

Coach Potato's picture

Stewart's hammy not sweet. Pretty sour actually.

Manly have lost their last 5 games without him stretching (pardon pun) back over 2 years. Round 4, 2014 the last time they won a game with no B.Stewart.

Looking forward to the LIVE updates from both camps.

Coach Potato's picture

Cmon you guys. I want you to hear you giving it to each other LIVE, one side of the stadium to the other.

When are you going to get another chance like this?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Bit hard to get to excited as a manly player when your down 12 - blot. Just sitting here at home with a lovely back ground soundtrack of a sobbing child trying to get her way and i can almost picture sitting in the manly half of the crowd.

Baggy_Gee's picture

How good was it though to see the Storm get up over the Cowboys as well. Happy camper here, except I also backed the warriors and the Eels. Coach is looking good currently on 5/5

Coach Potato's picture

Spruik the proposed Brisbane Grand Final all you damn like, but the TRUTH is, will Queenslanders support by attending a Grand Final if no Queensland teams are playing? The TRUTH is No.

Baggy_Gee's picture

YOU WANT THE TRUTH?

Coach Potato's picture

THEY CAANT HANDLE THE TRUTH?

Baggy_Gee's picture

I MADE THE CALL!!!!! Lets send the G/F to the Etihad, decent capacity and good viewing as it is more designed for the game rather than marking a square in the middle of the G which will be most of the time at least 20 meters away from the first row.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I kind wish I was down there tonight, seems like good running football.
Either that or sloppy Manly defence.

Coach Potato's picture

Don't forget to submit your 300 word post on the flight home Fortress.

Outclassed again with players injured but is that what you'll be saying week in week out?

Only age 31, but is Brett Stewart permanently busted?
If he is, then Manly is in all sorts.

Coach Potato's picture

Thinker 10 weeks back...

11th - Penrith Panthers
Still rebuilding, but what are they rebuilding? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? I still can't make it out but it doesn't look like a premiership.

Hoping an optometrist has helped with your vision. If not, I suggest you book in a visit.

Coach Potato's picture

Don't you all agree if Manly had won, you would have seen Fortress's victory comment?

Why should we all receive nothing just because they were thrashed?

This from the guy that resorts to name calling others.

Interesting.

tigerholic's picture

Well done coach on picking all 5 winners this week, if only you could show some "CONSISTENCY" week in week out you might be a threat.

Cameron Smith is a grub, no question about it he is King Grub. Did you see the way he cried to the referee when the cowboys were awarded that penalty, he went too far and should have been binned for his approach to the ref, don't forget he was the one who did the same thing after the Alex Mckinnon tackle??

Coach Potato's picture

Are you writing me off Tigerholic ? The way the universe works, there's no doubting now I get to refer to your comment today later in the season.

a's picture

Smith is not a grub Gallen is

christine's picture

I agree with that comment gallen is a grub & so is lussick ...

Coach Potato's picture

Hey, Tigerholic, about that team you claim to be addicted to, must be doing your head in when you will ever tip them for a win in 2016 huh?

Coach Potato's picture

To all the Broncos out there, why aren't you giving it with gusto?

You know Manly would be giving it to you if you lost.

Coach Potato's picture

Ex-Warrior, ex-Panther Elijah Taylor to have his first run in Tigers colours today.

Not the flashest of performers but a good worker.Thats one thing the Tigers are short on. I think you'll see them go ok today.

BigPeteBx's picture

Morning Coach & Fortress -
I'm being honest with you, as a MWRLFC supporter and I think the score says it all.
I was shell-shocked this morning at 12.30am, when I looked up the scores. Didnt see the match or progress scores as I was at a 21st Birthday last night.

Fortress - what happened to them. I thought they were in with a close chance, before the match commenced. That, or they received injuries in the pre-match warmup. Thinking of you guys on the return, as it's going to be a long flight home and a bloody long week.

Keep well - Big Pete in Foggy Bathurst.

Coach Potato's picture

Come back from Jupiter Manly.

Apart from a win against the Sharks, your other few wins have been against cellar dwellers. Whether Stewart and Matai played or not, they didn't have a snowballs chance up @ Suncorp - or anywhere else they might have played.

BigPeteBx's picture

BTW Johnny Ray - Happy Birthday for tomorrow.
Yes, I am also a Taurus.

Do you follow Warriors?
I seem to recall that a comment was made in a post "how does a NZlander get the mail before us" (on the NRL mainland). Going by your photo/graphic - u r a hidden agenda.

Have a great day tomorrow.
Big Pete in Bx (West of The Sandstone Curtain)

BigPeteBx's picture

Morning Mark A -
You were too good on us. Credit where it is due.

Season not half way over yet, but Trent needs to get through injuries (all clubs get them) and get his combinations working.
Benny has Broncos firing on all cylinders, but rep games will see how the backups handle the promotion.
My offsider Fortress, has disappeared off my radar, but he'll check in when he has landed. All good eagles land, or have landed.

Overall, I think the double header was a good promotion of two good matches. I find, if NRL program that a bit more often, their crowds in attendance will exceed. Its also brings together a good mixture of supporters.

Have a good week by the waters.
Big Pete in Bx

Coach Potato's picture

Probably shows what kind of dire straits the Manly club is in financially that they need to give up one their sacred Home games to play at the opposition's ground.

Are they for or against keeping the suburban home ground? This week would have you thinking they couldn't care less. My suspicion is the Manly club's existence is at stake. Giving up home ground advantage the least of their problems.

Dragonsfanboy 2007's picture

What a great win from the boys on Thursday night. But credit to the Raiders to get it to extra time. Also congratulations to the Storm with the win even though there was the offside incident that wasn't called when JT was in position for field goal.

a's picture

Yeah we should have won 16-15

Rocket Ryan's picture

Fortress what did think of that, the eagles were outclassed, I am a bit disappointed we did not put fifty on you, at least you got to visit Suncorp after that dump Brookvale you would of been stunned, I could of done with those pizzas during the Melbourne game it was interesting, but it would of been far too dangerous for you to enter the bronco stronghold armed with only your wits and a manly beanie.

Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Yeah 'a' you're 100% right. But you know what, that's footy. Bad calls, a lot of bad calls. Like for example the Dragons-Raiders game, I have to admit, a lot of calls may have gone our way that shouldn't have. Fortress that's not on calling 'a' a girl. 'A' don't listen to that, you know it's not true. Just saying changed my name again. I'm Dragons fanboy 2007 that I've been using pretty much this whole season.

Thanks Dragons fan no one should be called a girl

Rocket Ryan's picture

Tigers in a dark corner maybe one of the problems was stretchered off.

tigerholic's picture

Rocket Ryan

Your comments come from a dark place, you need to show respect to an injured player, you never know what the outcome will be.

Coach Potato's picture

Pretty poor taste comment.

Farah isn't a tenth of the problem.
Playing a home game away, and calls going to the away team doesn't help.
The problem I see is wingers appearing for all the world to script tries for the opposition. Any winger who defends 20m in from the sideline needs his bank account audited immediately after the game. Tigers just wouldn't stop doing it today. Wasn't easy to watch. I'm definitely not a Tigerholic.

Coach Potato's picture

Fortress, you deserve to call yourself those names.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Tigerholic you and fortress have a few things in common.

Dragonsfan4ever's picture

All good 'a'.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Hmmm have to agree. Never wish a player misfortune or injury. Am very saddened that Robbie is in such a bad way and my prayers go out to him and his family. Tigers must be taking edge defence lessons from the BOYS. Seeing Sami defend in just outside the goal posts on Friday killed me. Argh. Back to the initial thing, let's never celebrate a player injury as it is in horrible taste.

a's picture

Farah might not be playing origin

Coach Potato's picture

Brings to light what a shameful act it was by Josh Reynolds the other week, pretending to be unconscious when he wasn't hurt at all.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Times like these give justification to the bunker to go through and review weather it was an accident or foul play that has landed him into trouble. Definitely a worth while use of the technology. But as long as the reviews happen we are going to get players laying down when a arm hair brushes their face. The annoying part is when they are in the opposition's 20, unless they are properly injured they bounce back up as not to let momentum falter.

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Big Pete. yes the boys went well, but it may have been a different result at Brooky.
I know it's a $$ thing but can't get my head around clubs giving away home ground matches.
A possible 2 points gone for a few bucks. Could mean the difference in making the finals and maybe the premiership.
Fortress & Big Pete what's the story on Brooky???
Thought I read somewhere that a massive upgrade was planned??
I don't think Rocket was being disrespectful or wishing Robbie F to be injured. Robbie has been the most disruptful player at the Tiges for the last couple of years and it's affected the club. It's an ego thing.

mark ashford's picture

Think I've finally managed to upload a picture. Will post this and see.
Thanks to all who offered advice.
