Round ten selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canberra Raiders – Thursday night – Jubilee Oval

If you put me on the spot and asked me to name the three best teams in the NRL right now I would list the Cowboys, Broncos and Sharks. The Dragons have played all three, and in 240 minutes of football against those three sides they have scored a total of two points. They've scored 20 points in a game just once this season - against the team that were running last. The Raiders have only played one of those top three sides (the Sharks), and while they didn't win they did score 16 points. They've scored 20 points or more six times this season in nine games. Those numbers don't lie, but neither do these numbers - the Dragons have won as many games as the Raiders this season. So what we're left with is a home team that knows how to win in a grind against an away team that knows how to make the ball sing. I like singing.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result - Dragons 16 defeated Raiders 12

Parramatta Eels vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Pirtek Stadium

I had the Eels pencilled in as certainties in this game, and while I still expect them to win there's an X factor at play on Friday night which I hadn't considered previously. Greg Inglis has moved into the halves (with Alex Johnston returning at fullback), and while he hasn't set the NRL alight this season this is the Recognise Round. GI did win a Clive Churchill in the six jersey, and he could easily drag himself off the ropes and give us a game to remember (and another goanna). For the Rabbitohs to win he would need to. The Eels have shown resilience throughout the season already and they'll be galvanised in front of what should be a packed Pirtek. No Foran, no Mannah...no matter.

Verdict – Eels by 8

Result - Rabbitohs 22 defeated Eels 20

Penrith Panthers vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – AMI Stadium (Christchurch)

It's déjà vu all over again with the Panthers, who keep scoring virtually identical totals each and every week. As a rule, 18-20 points isn't enough to beat the Warriors in New Zealand. In fact, the only sides to contain the Warriors attack this season have been the Broncos and the Storm (twice). The Panthers are a notch down from that level, but they're clearly better than the sides the Warriors have either beaten or competed with. The Panthers have lost Whare and Martin for the season, but the seventeen they've named this weekend is the same seventeen that can see them competing in September. This is a bloody good team, and if the key players stay fit and well, I expect the attack to click into gear and the floodgates to open. This looks like just the game to see that happen. Some big bodies return for the Warriors (Matulino, Thompson) on Saturday but there's plenty of forwards in that Panthers seventeen (Campbell-Gillard, Cartwright, Latimore, Fisher-Harris) that look like future Origin players to me eye.

Verdict – Panthers by 2

Result - Panthers 30 defeated Warriors 18

Melbourne Storm vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

Sometimes a statistic looks plain wrong - so wrong that you go back and check the figures yourself. Here's one of those now - the Storm have won 10 of the 13 games they've played at Suncorp. With a 77% win rate at this venue that puts them a long way in front of the Cowboys (38%) and, dare I say it, quite a way in front of the Broncos (61%). They're also heading north in a rich vein of form, racking up 80 points in their last two outings without conceding a point. Yet in the face of all that evidence I simply can't tip against the Cowboys on Saturday night. For years the Cowboys had their seasons derailed by injuries, but once again they can name their best seventeen this round. This seventeen were good enough to win one of the great grand finals and they're good enough to win this. There's but a handfull of tickets left if you're keen to be there - no doubt the NRL will take notes as they consider where to take the NRL grand final during the ANZ Stadium redevelopment. The game of the round.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Storm 15 defeated Cowboys 14

Manly Sea Eagles vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

There's no doubt the Broncos pack is weakened with the absence of Blair, Glenn and McCullough. Those three (and particularly Blair) play vital roles for the Broncos in defence. Despite that, the Broncos still have four Kangaroos in their starting pack. Wallace and Thaiday step into the starting thirteen while the biggest palindrome in the NRL (Ese'ese) gets a chance to show everyone how big he is and the Thinker gets a chance to find out how to pronounce his surname. Manly are warming into their season but the fact remains that their victories have (mostly) been over the teams that are struggling even more than they are. I'm tempted to back the Sea Eagles with the handicap start, but I can't back them to win.

Verdict – Broncos by 7

Result - Broncos 30 defeated Sea Eagles 6

Newcastle Knights vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

Anyone tipping the Knights to beat the Sharks hasn't been paying attention. The Sharks are $1.18 favourites on Sunday, and while $1.18 rarely looks like value in this competition I'm feeling tempted. Sharks = very good things.

Verdict – Sharks by 22

Result - Sharks 62 defeated Knights 0

Wests Tigers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

I assume this is one of those Sunday games Will Hopoate is excused from on religious grounds - that could get very complicated if the Bulldogs make the finals. The Perrett brothers return to fill the void. The Tigers regular fullback is also unavailable for a few weeks with a shoulder injury. More important perhaps is the return of prop forwards Aaron Woods and Tim Grant - when you're facing the Bulldogs you want every prop forward you can get. Woods and Grant will earn their keep on Sunday, but they may find themselves a run short at the business end given their lack of match fitness. The Bulldogs are shorter than they should be, and I'm a little concerned with the inability of their halves to convert field position into points, but I'll tip them here. If they fail to deliver this weekend I may not tip them again.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 2

Result - Bulldogs 36 defeated Tigers 4

Gold Coast Titans vs Sydney Roosters – Monday night – Cbus Super Stadium

One big win over the Knights and the world seems convinced the Chooks are back. They might be, but they might not be either. Mitchell Pearce is a week-to-week proposition it seems, and he has to keep it together for much of the weekend on the Gold Coast before kick-off. We'll see how he goes. The Titans were awful last round but in that round we saw both the Tigers and Warriors bounce back from demoralising losses with impressive victories. I'm punting on the Titans rebounding off that horrible loss to the Storm with a vastly improved performance. They've shown plenty of competitive spirit this season and I'm optimistic we'll see it again. The Titans are underdogs (like Turnbull and Shorten) but sometimes the underdog salutes (like Turnbull.....or Shorten).

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result - Titans 26 defeated Roosters 6

Wally Lewis - round ten selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • EELS vs Rabbitohs
  • PANTHERS vs Warriors
  • Storm vs COWBOYS

We see Fortress was on duty! Guarding a place in vain that's keeps getting stormed by anyone that knocks. Gotta admire the poor bloke for trying though.

Yeah we have to admire him for trying

Should be a good one Fortress. Contain Milford and keep our defence right. It will be close. Keep an eye on the weather up there as well.

Cheers mate and have a nice time.

The hamstrings article is correct Coach. Very frail afte rone goes the first time. I ripped a hammy yonks years ago watching a junior soccer team I coached play a semi-final replay. I was standing in shorts, as I had r/league training later that evening. The legs got cold and not long after we started league training I stretched out to fly down the wing and rip.....it went on me.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Fortress - know the feeling being there.
Much like I have said before, back in AMCO Cup days when Western Division (WD) beat Manly in a snowy Orange. I love me Manly, but on that day you had to go for the Country WD Boys. They ended up beating Penrith (The Chocolate Soldiers) in the final at Leichhardt Oval.

Yes, will be thinking and trying to get a glimpse of the match as we have our daughters 21st Saturday night. Her birthday isnt until the following week and is two days after mine Bro.

Cheers mate - Big Pete

JOHNNIE RAY happy birthday mate for Monday. I'll probably forget too.
But have a good one mate not too much of that KFC The booze is OK but that KFC will f--king kill you!
I gotta ask where did you hear that nasty about the Broncs and the cap.
How can a NZD'er get the mail before us?
The Eels are good to go....thank the lord.
There is a bit of sanity in the NRL.
COACH you are buying some very expensive players.
Will YOU be the next club looked at?
You know what they say about people in glass houses Coach

BigPeteBx's picture

So Fortress, after I asked before with long times that you sit up answering "blogs". Do you actually work over at The Manly RLFC.
Its a bit of a hike from Manly near Corso/Beach to Brookie - isnt it.

Got me 2016 poster from the club a few weeks ago. I have a team of Sea Eagles supporters here that support them as well. I try to get a dozen so I can give them one each and it saves the club all the extra postage of sending out individual ones.
Go The Eagles. Hope you have a good seat at the match.

I'm told Coach that The Caxton Pub is like an overloaded saleyard when SoO is on up there. They rock the NSW bus something shocking, as it passes by, on its way to The Cauldron.
Hopefully not like in English Soccer on Monday morning just passed. The Man Utd bus was attacked by West Ham supporters on it's way to Upton Park for the match.

Cheers - Big Pete

Evening Tippers.
Mine for Round 10 - Raiders, Eels, Panthers, Cowboys, Sea Eagles (in a close upset), Sharks, Bulldogs, and Roosters.

Good luck all - Big Pete in Bx

BigPeteBx
Yeah mate we used to be able to give it to the Blues on the run in to the ground near the Caxton pub but the coppers stopped it. Got a bit out of control. Now I believe the blues just sneak in to their defeat and then sneak out.
So much for fun up here in Gods country.

Seriously looking forward to your Manly playing my Broncs.
Gonna be a cracker....may the best team win!

Coach Potato's picture

Cmon I thought this game was free. I gotta park my car up against the window and put the high beams on to get some light onto his bloody pitch.

The Thinker's picture

This Dragons/Raiders game is a little bit embarrassing yes?

mark ashford's picture

Yes Coach had to put the overheads on t see that corner.
What about Blake Austin's nose?
Didn't see it said the ref...what about the f--kin blood...couldn't you see that either? you f--kin idiot

mark ashford's picture

Thinker are you saying the referring is a bit embarrassing or the lack of lighting?

The Thinker's picture

Check the security footage - I want to know if the Dragons have been training in the dark all week.

The Thinker's picture

Mark,
Both....how many times have we heard a referee say you can't make contact with the head?

And here we have a broken nose....and nothing.

Oh...and the quality of the football is terrible too.

mark ashford's picture

I guess as a Qlder I should be happy to see the NSW clubs bash each other but I hate to see playmakers from any teams get flogged and the refs say "oh I didn't see it" must have been having a coffee in the bunker.
Going to bed with my book and M&M's

christine's picture

Yeah in case I too foget to say it to you johnny ray happy birthday for Monday bro , have a drink on me seeing I can't with the ms & don't forget to eat chicken responsibly ...

Johnny Ray's picture

Alright. Not totally hulk out about it but tonight match between Raiders and Dragons was probably it for me this season because personally speaking it's really starting to get me to see so many games this year being decided by so many bad calls by the referee. Bye all. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TzMSfaNXYZg ;-D

Coach Potato's picture

Mark, we don't still have the same 17 players going around from the 2015 Grand Final like the Cowboys still do, so it's big dollars being shed from the Cowboys salary cap here. My question about who's over the cap would have been the opposite. Following all that's happened with Parra, I would think the first clubs to look at would be clubs that are quickly shedding players as fast as paper gets shredded at the Pentagon.

Was Bronco's releasing Copley enough to pay for James Roberts? Ian Schubert please ask and just friggin knock harder next time? When they answer, don't forget to stick your foot inside the door jam so they can't close it. If they say sorry not interested, your answer should be more like, open the door, we have a police warrant to search the premises.

Big Pete I think we are a real chance in this match partisan crowd could give them the edge with ref the key score a couple early control the ball and keep the crowd out of it. Anyway buddy u are a champion shame some others on this site don't have the footy brains like we do but that's the way it goes and mate with that comment chat soon and from both of us big Pete. GO THE MIGHTY SEA EAGLESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Coach Potato's picture

JR, plenty of games you picked right this year have also been the result of dud ref calls but I not once have I heard you whinge about any of those.

If refs calls are only a factor if they affect your tipping, then sounds like not a very balanced point of view.

Coach Potato's picture

Constantly calling someone a girl is not very classy. It's the kind of bullying we all need to stand up to, starting from when we are five and in the playground, through to adulthood, our workplaces, even through to footy chat pages. People unite and stamp this out.

#StandUpToBullies

It will be interesting in how the chips fall. The Rabbits have started that process, Manly beat everyone to the punch earlier in the year, We have given up a very good hooker to the NRL based on the Gold Coast. The domino's are started to fall around the game, hopefully they can install a better system to keep the balance.

Fortress eagle's picture

Yeah coach it an't over yet hoping for major injuries to both the top 2 sides than they will know how it feels you see it's called cama .

christine's picture

The bunker is cr*p they need to get rid of it end of story ...

What a ripper of a finish for the dragons. This round is going to be cracking. Remainder of round tips from me:

Eels
Panthers
Cowboys
Broncos
Sharks
Bulldogs
Roosters

You guys crack me up. Love it. Good luck everyone.

a's picture

Thanks Christine but Fortress has been also calling me a girl and says I been bashing everyone up so he also been giving me a fair share of crap too

tigerholic's picture

Hey Folks
Last nights game was embarrassing. How could the NRL deem that lighting acceptable, if you are Dragons fan you would say that it was OK.

The lighting was that bad that the Bunker could not see and then determined that the high shot on Blake Austin was not a reportable offence which would allow them to advise the dumb arse referee Ashley Klein.\ to take some action.

The No Try to against the raiders in the 8th minute was a try, how many times this year alone have we seen those awarded. With all of the local shows that are on up here in Queensland, I'm sure some of the clowns have second jobs as officious in the bunker.

The bunker has got that bad I would even support Rocket Ryan sitting in the chair, he would need someone sitting beside him with their hand up his back to make him talk but at least he knows footy.

Someone posted about Gods County being north of the border, I almost choked on my first beer tonight. NSW has the cleanest air, friendliest people, better footy players, better beer, what else do you need.

Have a great weekend folks, work for me both days but I will still watch all the games I can.

Cheers and happy birthday Johnny Ray

a's picture

Yeah the Bunker is way to conversial

Jazzy's picture

But we are the Sunshine State! 30 degrees this last week in May. We have the best stadium for RL. We don't need anything else Tigerholic.

Coach Potato's picture

I for one hope to God this Parra team doesn't still make the finals. Not just because they field a team compliments of salary cap breaches, but for the way they play the game - players diving left right and centre for penalties. Makes me sick to the stomach.

If cheating off the field wasn't enough for them, now they need to be bent on cheating their way through a game!? Three more days can't come soon enough for this mob.

Coach Potato's picture

Three more *losses* that is :p

'Spare me *days' - I must have been thinking!

Baggy_Gee's picture

I am disappointed as well by it. But ever since the bunker/video ref started to make penalty calls based on the tackle everyone does it to try and milk that teat. Exactly the same as the Eagle dive a few weeks back in preventing a try, or Purple wearing Captains continually arguing with the ref, all teams are pushing the edge of decency to get that advantage. The part that hurt the most, if they hadn't laid down twice in a row, that charge down try wouldn't have even been a possibility as the defence would have been back pedalling when the kick came.

The Joker's picture

Up the bunnies!!!!! Yeeehaar!

Coach Potato's picture

Come off it Fortress, I don't discriminate. I pay out on all the other 15 teams.

I leave personal stuff out of it. I reckon if I only talk footy but otherwise respect others, that's the way to do it.

Name calling is cheap. You sound like you want to be a leader of people but taking a leaf out of Donald Trump's book ain't gonna have people following.

Coach Potato's picture

Baggy, you are right plenty, if not most teams take the fall, but it's an insult that you tar Penrith with your brush.

They play it tough, and if they win they win and it ain't gonna be because they played for a penalty. It's not part of the Panthers culture. It's very much frowned upon. Sad that I struggle to name another team that doesn't have winning penalties in their gameplan.

Anonymous's picture

Eels need to win 12 from 14 now

tigerholic's picture

Morning Folks

Correct me if I am wrong, referee sends a possible try upstairs with opinion of a try, the only way the bunker can over turn is if there is enough evidence to suggest that the ref made the wrong call. Adam Reynolds no try was a joke, where was the conclusive evidence to go against the referee? Pleeaasse NRL, we need to do something.

Souths had most of the 50/50 calls go against them last night but still scraped home. Can anyone supply me with some fresh clean NSW air during State of Origin time so I can survive all of the bullshit that fly's during this period?

Cheers

Rocket Ryan's picture

The origin bunker now that is a scary thought must admit could not agree with the Reynolds no try .
Never ceases to amaze me how blue supporters shrug off series loss after seris loss and standup the next year big noting, tigerholic any air is good enough for cockroachs remember that only for Dave Taylor you fools would of lost the last decade.

christine's picture

" a " Sorry I didn't realise that was directed towards you I thought he was referring to mark , in that case don't let him get away with it tear him to shreds .
