Round twenty selections

North Queensland Cowboys vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

While being a Sydney-based team is not without its challenges, it also comes with a few advantages. Take the Bulldogs for example - here we are in Round 20 and they've played just three games all season outside of Sydney. One of those games they moved by choice - taking a home game to New Zealand (and picking up a cheque for their troubles). Ten of their seventeen games this season have been at ANZ Stadium, plus another game at Belmore. They lost two of their three games away from Sydney, but they did beat the Storm in Melbourne. They'll need to find that level again to succeed on Thursday. While the Bulldogs have left Sydney just three times the Cowboys have left Townsville nine times, but it's when they play at home they shine. Eight games at home without loss, and there's been some big wins too. Their last home game was a four point win over the Sea Eagles, but that was backing up from Origin duty. They should be nice and fresh on Thursday night, and the timely return of Michael Morgan means this side can start focussing all it's energy on defending their title. That's Everest, but I'm confident they can scale Mt Bulldog on Thursday night.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Cowboys 36 defeated Bulldogs 0

Brisbane Broncos vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

Back in round three these sides squared off in Penrith, where the Broncos racked up four tries in the first half and stopped. The Panthers responded with 17 points of their own, including a field goal in the 77th minute (off the back of a Ben Hunt fumble - Déjà vu) to claim the win. It's difficult to know whether the Broncos fell asleep or the Panthers woke up - perhaps the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Last week the Eels targeted Bryce Cartwright with their big men but he eventually came out the other side. He's not a complete footballer yet, and you can see why Laurie Daley kept him out of the Blues squad for now, but he's close. He's very close. The Panthers as a team are much like Cartwright as an individual. Plenty of talent but very young. I doubt them this year but this group of players look set to create a nice little dynasty in the years ahead. Still, I'm here to talk about Friday night. The Broncos have struggled through their difficult period and while the win over the Rabbitohs wasn't perfect there was enough positives for me to believe they're heading in the right direction.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Panthers 31 defeated Broncos 12

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium

The Warriors travelled all the way to Perth, played in atrocious conditions, played extra time and flew all the way home. Less than a week later and they're heading back to Canberra. Through all of that, the Raiders had a bye. While the forecast looks okay for Saturday it's raining in Canberra today with more to come on Friday. Those Warriors legs will be working mighty hard to get through the going this weekend. The Raiders forward pack is under-rated by most and I'd back them to match the Warriors anyway, but given the circumstances this game has all the makings of a good old-fashioned carve-up. I'm not sure how often the Raiders look at the NRL ladder but a win on Saturday gives them a spot in the top four. Actually I'm hoping they don't realise, that's just the sort of expectation that usually brings them undone.

Verdict – Raiders by 20

Result - Raiders 26 defeated Warriors 22

Gold Coast Titans vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

Greg Bird shored up his title as the most suspended player in NRL history with another suspension last round - he'll be back next week to face his former team-mates at the Sharks. Despite having a busier casualty ward than most clubs the Titans have managed to pull together a strong seventeen. Their dominant victory over the Dragons was an almost flawless performance - a repeat of that and they win again. Just about everyone is waiting for the Eels to drop their bundle but it hasn't happened yet. This week the government had to step in and kick the Parramatta Board to the kerb - surely that's about as low as you can go. I stand and applaud the players that are still there and the coach doing all he can to hold this team together. If they keep this up until the end of the season I will stand and applaud some more. For the sake of their fans I hope they do, but a weekend on the Gold Coast is a risky proposition.

Verdict – Titans by 8

Result - Titans 34 defeated Eels 14

Melbourne Storm vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – AAMI Park

I'll keep this brief - these sides played in Sydney in round 14. Tohu Harris played in the halves, and the Storm won 46-0.

Verdict – Storm by 19

Result - Storm 26 defeated Roosters 10

Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

You have to feel for the Knights. Last week they faced a top two side and were gallant in defeat. This week they face the other top two side. I'm not sure how much gallantry they have left in the tank.

Verdict – Sharks by 34

Result - Sharks 36 defeated Knights 4

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

While the late withdrawal of Benji Marshall last week probably cost me a perfect round (grrrr!) this is the perfect game for a milestone. A milestone it may be but I'm not convinced he'll get the result he would be hoping for. The Tigers are fresh from a bye and they welcome back their trio of Origin stars. On a wet track I'd give the Dragons a chance but that doesn't look likely at the minute. Dry conditions and a daytime schedule lend itself to the Tigers dynamic style. I can't see enough points in the Dragons to stay in the contest. A win for the Tigers and they're on the cusp of a finals berth. Sorry Benji.

Verdict – Tigers by 10

Result - Tigers 35 defeated Dragons 12

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Monday night – Allianz Stadium

I was surprised when the Bunnies didn't challenge the Greg Inglis suspension, and then it dawned on me - perhaps they've given up. I think they need to win the last seven games of the season to get inside the top eight. That means beating the Sharks, the Bulldogs, the Warriors in Auckland and the Storm in Melbourne. Perhaps they've given up. The Sea Eagles clearly haven't. They'll take plenty of positives out of that extra time victory over the Warriors in Perth, and I expect them to carry that momentum through Monday night. Right now you can get $1.75 about Manly on Monday night. I'm tempted (gamble responsibly).

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 8

Result - Sea Eagles 20 defeated Rabbitohs 12

Wally Lewis - round twenty selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • COWBOYS vs Bulldogs
  • BRONCOS vs Panthers
  • RAIDERS vs Warriors
  • TITANS vs Eels
  • STORM vs Roosters
  • SHARKS vs Knights
  • Dragons vs TIGERS
  • Rabbitohs vs SEA EAGLES

Rabs has been great, but his time has come.
Commentary has been going backwards for a while now.
Fresh eyes is what we need.

This is just my opinion though. Nothing personal.

If you would like Rabs to stay, please sign christine"s petition.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Everybody speak quietly we don't want to wake coach he is having a lovely dream Moylan is about to hoist the cup

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening Fortress - hope the young Bro's 18th went well mate.
You've been quiet today, so I assume your resting a heavy feathered head.

Panthers were exceptional against Bronco's mate. They knew what they had to do and were well supported by a Bronco's former coach in A. Griffin. Coach is allowed to live on the laurels of that win, but look out - Manly has a good run home and you never know what is around the corner. Sleeping Giants might be the word, if a fully fit team of players is at the avail.

Freddy appears to be more at home with a comedy sketch down on the sideline/centre-field. I think Lucky Grills and Johnny Garfield were better stand-up comedians. With the Rabs and commentators (NOT Common Taters), he's the best going around and I/we all know, he hasn't been well in the past, as outlined with his push on Mens Health.
The push should be on to graduate understudies of the announcing game, as I detailed before.

Cheers and have a good week - Big Pete

I really hope Titans beat Sharks next oh how I am sick and tired of seeing sharks won all the time

Coach Potato's picture

One things a certainty, it's not going to be Parker.
Sweet dreams that one o-silent-as-a-buddhist-monk since Friday.

BigPeteBx's picture

Evenin E/Rocks and love the graphic.
Let our lads take it week by week and gradually get there, barring injury.

All teams need to watch that, now finals are closing in.
Some clubs will peak and some might fall, so if we look at the bigger picture and the long term gain, we might just happen to get there, well, at least the 8 and many might hate that, because Manly is the club they love to hate.

Cheers - Big Pete

Coach Potato's picture

'a', you know what couldn't be better is if they go along the way to the Prelim or even Grand Final undefeated.

Ths pressure to win their first will be enormous. Feels a lot like Parra 2001. Unstoppable, but in the big one, they fell behind and suddenly had no plan B.

I really hope the Sharks keep winning til it matters the most.

Two teams in their 50th season has an attraction about it.
If only it wasn't just another pipedream.

Coach Potato's picture

Good luck to all the teams still in with a chance at finals.
Surely most luck needed by Manly though.
Win to tomorrow and they need to win 5/6.
Lose tomorrow and they need to win 6/6.

Sure they are in a little form, but it took til round 19 to rack up their first 6 wins.

Nothing personal. Just saying surely they need the most luck of all from here.

fortresseagle's picture

hey big pete ,yeah mate it was abig one, i got up and did a rendition of the eagle rock there would of been at least 500 people there mum and dad got up and did the eagle dance it was so funny, and my bro loved the pressies, got him the eagles tankard like u said, and gave him a card with some cash so he can buy what he needs all in all a great, one of my brothers mates reckons i should audition for australian idol i think he was taking the piss out of me...........but i did use to sing at school and also did plays and sang in karoke contests, i once won one, and came second in another one,but i think idol may be out of my league mate.

anyways bit nervouse bout tomorrows game we should win we have the momentum, just good ball control play for each other and take our chances if we can continue our form of the last 3 weeks than the mighty eagles will power home the mighty eagles by 14

coach u have every reason to enjoy your win, i think mark a is just saying that the past records have the broncs ahead, ,but you totally out palyed them on the nite, and mark ashford hang in there mate i think we are in for a great two months of footy .we could see shocks and twists and turns
yet to come, but i love the passion from both of you, and cowboy well done to your team the big teat is now can they win without your master thurston i think they want to prove they can.

lets keep the passion, lets keep the respect, lets love our clubs and lets keep the dream alive..........................................................................................................

fortress eagle soaring high and mighty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Attention Mark & Baggy

Please read this article from May 2015 before you go beddy-bies citing direct quotes from Arthur ... then tell me again that you don't believe he knew about the club's salary cap situation.

It includes him saying they were no chance of signing Gordon.
(So what is the number 1 for Parra's name again ?)

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-05-28/parramatta-eels-nrl-salary-cap-woe...

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Coach no probs with the Bs stuff. I know what u r getting at.

I write more than R/League that you most likely disagree with.
To me, this is also a Sports Social Site and if I make friends with someone, please let that be, if I ask where they live and they respond - good.
I only ask the once, like I did you twice.

I dislike no-one here, but I dislike some of the trivial crap that tends to exchange and exchange, turn about. No-one I take it, tries to out do the other, in what they write. Some might take offence, as to how it was expressed or written. Like my old friend (much, much younger than me) Fortress - he had typos and comprehension, out of this world, as he was writing a fair bit and obviously rushing to get his lungful out and get his next breath. Such was the case, he realised, when he took his time, he was belting out a few good tunes.

As for Gus' 5 Year Plan etc. It was actually Gus that asked your Talent Coach Matt C to come back to Panthers from Tigers. He runs the academy and as an ex chalky, he will do well with that, as he loves coaching. He started out with Eels, then to Panthers to Tigers and back to Panthers, as Gus didn't even fill the vacant position he left.

So good luck to Panthers in getting the younger players coming through in an academy style setup. Then the real hard yards follows.

Cheers Coach and as they say in sport and coaching - "you're only as good as your last game".
Have a good week - Big Pete

Coach Potato's picture

Granted Sandow leaving freed up dollars for Gordon and Jennings (maybe)

My point is, it clearly shows that Arthur was all over the salary cap situation. There's no doubting it after reading that one.

Bx. Just having a dig. You are a colourful and proud old country bumpkin and I enjoy your stuff.

BigPeteBx's picture

Good late evening "a" -

Long time, no exchange mate.
Confidence breeds confidence champ - but be extra careful on that early prediction of Cowboys winning back to back.
You never know whats around the corner, or slurking up on you.

Cheers and have a good week - Big Pete

Coach Potato's picture

A copy and paste of my round 5 theory post - (from round 5)
(That the top 4 teams after Round 5 are almost guaranteed to play semis , and the bottom. 4 after Round 5 are almost guaranteed to miss out)

The top 4 is
---------------
Broncos
Storm
RAIDERS
Cowboys

Can you believe it? Raiders 90% chance of playing semis.

Bottom 4
-----––----
Manly
Dragons
Knights
Roosters

15% chance of playing semis.

Coach Potato's picture

Best wishes to you Footy Chick

christine's picture

Sorry " a " sharks are going all the way have a look at there run home there hardest game playing is against storm .

christine's picture

I'm staying away from the site for a while until the egos settle down .

mark ashford's picture

Christine don't go anywhere. There's only 6 rounds to go and you won't want to miss anything.
Coach and I enjoy crossing swords occasionally but it's all in fun.
Sometimes gets a bit heated (mainly on my part) but there's no malice intended. Just blokes passionate about their clubs.

Coach I read the link you posted and yes it appears Brad Arthur was well aware of the Eels cap problems over a year ago.
But I don't think it means he was involved in the over payments.
Being aware and being involved are two different things.
If memory serves me right I don't think the Bulldogs, Titans or Storm coaches were sanctioned either.

a's picture

Sign if you want Christine to stay

tigerholic's picture

How many times do we have to beg people to stay, no offence to you Christine but there has nothing but passion shown over the past week or so between Coach and others, Coach may cop more than the average tipster on this site bit he loves it. Of course I would love you to stay but you must do what you feel is right for you, thats what my first 3 wives told me as they left:)

I can feel an upset tonight, the bunnies to be too strong for the fragile eagles. Come on Souths, please show some backbone tonight

a's picture

Too much if you ask me

mark ashford's picture

Tiger yes people can come and go as they seem fit. If it doesn't suit them then we are all free to go/return when we like.
Both the Rabbits and Manly are playing better football now with perhaps Manly slightly ahead. Bookies are favouring Manly but it could go either way.
My tip is Manly but who knows?
C'mon Fortress, Eagle Rocks and BigPete (I know you're at work mate) some support for your team.
Do we have any Rabbits supporters out there....comment.
Christine has left the Rabbits...anyone else?

The Thinker's picture

I was pretty keen on the Sea Eagles tonight. I still am.

The Rabbits got flogged by the Broncos last week....that's not looking like great form at the minute.

christine's picture

I was only going to stay off the site for a few days until mark & coach had finished there testosterone battle , I never said permanently & tigerholic that's what we do on this site we look out for the regulars .

christine's picture

I wasn't staying off site very long just until things calm down ok .

mark ashford's picture

Sorry Christine if I upset you. I know I get a bit carried away at times.
Coach and I will continue our battle until the end of the season.
It's just footy mate. We all love it so stay for the ride.

BigPeteBx's picture

Hahahaha Coach - Country Bumpkin but not overly "old" mate.
Glad you can see the social side of this site. Its just great to meet people in the electronic form, until you happen to meet them in the flesh (personally), if it comes to being.

Remember, that if ever you want to visit here again, give me a call and I will take you around and show you some sites and explain some of the history that makes this place the oldest inland city in Australia.
A great uncle of mine, also worked in railways and took over secretary of AFULE from Ben Chifley when he entered politics. The Chifley's that remain here, are very good friends of mine.

Cheers mate and keep the Aussie Dream alive - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Good evening Miss Christine - why bother for just a few days.
Stay here and keep the boys honest. I know you can take so much, but do as I do, read it and don't get involved unless you really feel you have to, or want to.
Otherwise, stay for the ride and then Summer comes along and what do we do then, to keep this happy family together.
Aaah...... English Soccer (EPL) kicks off in August. Go The Red Devils (Man Utd). Or, there is Big Bash Cricket Twenty/20 (limited overs).

Thinker might have to add a few additional sports tabs here to segregate the codes, that others may wish to discuss/chat about.
We'll make this site multi-national!!!!!!

Cheers - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Hey Marko- how you goin o.

Manly tonight mate. I'll also predict Dylan Walker (Man of the Match) and to have a blinder against his old club. At Allianz Stadium, depends how the wind is blowing as to how those kicks go.

Most burrows around this state mate, are flooded in. Some rabbits might raise their heads. Rabbits Warren not Souths but Parra - he's calling ok and hopefully has a rethink, about calling it a day.

Cheers - Big Pete

Coach Potato's picture

You are right Mark, coaches of other clubs in salary cap trouble have all escaped the microscope. They all should face the jury just the same. Strange how Stuart had a grand plan to rebuild Parra's roster, but left like a scalded cat as shit was about to hit the fan

fortresseagle's picture

Fragile eagles puusyhollic god mate ur hatred is felt all over this site the last 3 weeks the way we have been playing we would of flooded ur inept team run by that skiinny runt jason Taylor who has no respect for the great Robbie farah

The mighty eagles to run riot and belt the rabbits by 14 tigerhollic stop a$$e licking to coach it looks very weak buddy be your owns grow some balls .

Christine stay on ok it's just passion it's what this great game is all about have a laugh and be yourself you will be fine I really enjoy your posts so for me it's Christine to stay.

Big hello to big Pete . Eagle rocks, mark Ashord , rocket , coach ,cowboy and all you great footy lovers out there.

And go you mighty sea eaglesssssss. Soaring high and mighty come on boys you can do it smash em !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

christine's picture

I didn't say it would be permanent but when I post a comment the thinker or tlh deletes what I post .

christine's picture

Why are you delete my comments Thinker or TLH it's not like i'm putting anything bad ?

christine's picture

Thankyou Thinker or TLH at least this time you didn't delete my comment , excuse the wording it was supposed to say that .

Coach Potato's picture

Fortress what does your passion say about the Sharks appeal to play home games week 2 and 3?

On the one hand it's great that the NRL is finally listening to the subur an ground fans, but where does that leave Manly who were made to play away twice in 2014, and Panthers would played an away Prelim as the higher placed teams.

It's great and it friggin stinks all at the same time.

Coach Potato's picture

Settle Eagle , you gotta work on cutting the name calling out of your repetoire. If you want followers, you need to be a bit classier than that.

Remember anyone is free to say anything about other teams. Say what you want back, just minus the name calling. That's the rule on this page.

mark ashford's picture

Hey Fortress I happen to like Jason Taylor!! He's not a skinny runt, may be a bit thin but not a skinny runt.
I'm not a NSW,s man but admire his stance against Robbie.
Robbie, while he may have been a great player has been very disruptive for years at the Tiges.
Jason is trying to take the Tigers to the finals and good luck to him.

Anyway Fortress/Eagle Rock/BigPete your manly is going well, should get the win tonight.

BigPete I've read it's not only raining heaps out your way but now snowing and freezing as well. Gotta take my hat off to you guys in western NSW you do put up with a lot.
Barmy 26 degrees here just north of Brissy. Light winds, no rain and blue skies.
It is hard being a QLDer but we put up with it.
Keep your coats on
cheers

The Thinker's picture

Christine

The only post I deleted from you was the one where you asked why we deleted your post....and I only deleted that post because we didn't any of your posts.

Clear as mud...not sure I've helped.

In any case....we aren't deleting your posts.....unless you decide to start calling people horrible names.....and that probably won't happen.

Stoopid Manly....what are they doing?

mark ashford's picture

Winning THINKER winning! you did tip them

fortresseagle's picture

Great win by the boys 3 in a row great first half had to fight for it in the end souths showed great fighting spirit all you souths fans shpuld be proud of your club .

All in all a solid performance form the boys and now for the knights at brooky coukd be ugly for Newcastle.

Coach sorry bout the name calling but tiger Hollic is a little worried we may come over the top of his beloved tigers yes u are rite stick to the footy talk.

Now back to your post it seems that the panthers will be playing finals footy and even a top 4 spot I believe both manly and Penrith in that year were dudded by an inept system that have an unfair advantage to the other clubs both teams at the time deserved home finals but the powers to be decided against it and robbed both clubs of a chance at the title there has to be a fair balance.

If your club makes the top 4 then yes give them a home final why not if u come first then yes u should have a home final the rest it should be shared around.

I said it in my early posts months ago if u want to go back that the panthers had the team to do damage the balance is there up front as good as any side and they have creative halves I would not be shocked to see a panthers vs sharks decider that is if the mighty eagles have a say in it but look the broncos who are getting criticised only need to bounce back to form and then they will have a big day as well it's very interesting indeed .
It's so engrossing I love it are we going to see a surprise premership winner hang on to your seats folks .
So for now go the mighty sea eagles well done boys keep it up proud and love you all ..............

Fortress eagles loud and proud soaring high and mighty!!!!!!!!!!!!

a's picture

The refs are on Manly side as usual

The Thinker's picture

Evening football fans,

I've updated the tipping comp results - and a standing ovation for Footy Chick with a perfect round. Quite a lot of us got 7 from 8, but those Broncos let us down. Only Footy Chick and one other person picked the Panthers this round (and we all know who that other person is).

And with that we have a three way tie at the top...and they all rhyme. There's still enough rounds left for any number of contestants to make a run at the leaders from here - I'll cobble together some sort of prizes for the top three after the grand final is run and won.

I'll get the NRL ladder updated shortly. I'll have the round 21 page published tomorrow night for those that need to tip early, and my previews and selections should be published by lunchtime Wednesday.

All the best

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Mark - had rain, then blistery winds blowing branches off trees and uprooting them. Icy today and snow about at Oberon, I was told.
Yes mate, all added up, it would freeze the baubels off a Christmas tree.
Dont make me jealous with that Qld lovely days weather.

Eagles got home and we'll take the two points for it. I picked a margin of 6 and if Bunker Boys gave the other disallowed try, the talk is about, seems like we would have still crawled over the line.

As many a pundit would say - "A Win is a Win". Look at the Premiership Ladder and tell me who got the 2 competition points.

Keep well and have a nice week - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Correct Mark - double standards with The Dolphin, to have a dig or get my Brooky Fortress fueled up.

BigPeteBx's picture

Sorry "a" - not as usual mate.
We, like your Cowboys, cops a clobbering at times with penalties and still manage to claw our way home.
Its starting to fall into place for us, as we'v had a bugger of a season with injuries.

So hang onto your high horse and don't fall off, in these next few rounds.

Keep well and keep dry - unless its a NQ Lager you're having.

Cheers - Big Pete

Last One On The Couch - week 6

Still only myself, Rick, and Thinker on the couch, but next week I predict a mass couch pilgrimage. Lots of players have led with their bower cards.

Rocket claims to still be holding a Broncos bower, but I wonder if it's more like trying to hold a nine card in the eucre hand to the end. Only Boozemaster2000, and Broncoswimmer have played the Broncos card well.

Assess yourself, but there are some shrewd card players out there, some who are through without losing a picture card, or as with chess, only sacrificing pawns and the odd knight.

If anyone wants to compare the AFL table to my streak tables, here it is. Remember only top 3 streak scores win the flag and score of 10 or more required to finish top 4.

The real table
1 Hawthorn 56
2 Greater Western Sydney 48
3 Sydney. 48
4 Geelong 48
5 West Coast. 48
6 Adelaide. 48
7 Western Bulldogs. 48
8 North Melbourne 44

Coach's AFL streak table (* means currently on a streak)
1 Hawthorn 14*
2 Greater Western Sydney 11*
3 Geelong 11*
4. Adelaide 11
5 West Coast. 10*
6. Sydney 9
7 North Melbourne 9
8. Western Bulldogs. 8

GWS still a handy $8 for the flag, and hard to think come week 1 they won't be a game away from a Prelim, possibly a home Prelim at that.

That's if you believe in my streak theory of course.

Coach Potato's picture

Well done Manly. Looks like you could afford to drop one game. Just as well considering your finish against Dogs, Storm, Raiders, before final stop - the dreaded trip west to Penrith Park.
