Round twenty selections

North Queensland Cowboys vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

While being a Sydney-based team is not without its challenges, it also comes with a few advantages. Take the Bulldogs for example - here we are in Round 20 and they've played just three games all season outside of Sydney. One of those games they moved by choice - taking a home game to New Zealand (and picking up a cheque for their troubles). Ten of their seventeen games this season have been at ANZ Stadium, plus another game at Belmore. They lost two of their three games away from Sydney, but they did beat the Storm in Melbourne. They'll need to find that level again to succeed on Thursday. While the Bulldogs have left Sydney just three times the Cowboys have left Townsville nine times, but it's when they play at home they shine. Eight games at home without loss, and there's been some big wins too. Their last home game was a four point win over the Sea Eagles, but that was backing up from Origin duty. They should be nice and fresh on Thursday night, and the timely return of Michael Morgan means this side can start focussing all it's energy on defending their title. That's Everest, but I'm confident they can scale Mt Bulldog on Thursday night.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Cowboys 36 defeated Bulldogs 0

Brisbane Broncos vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

Back in round three these sides squared off in Penrith, where the Broncos racked up four tries in the first half and stopped. The Panthers responded with 17 points of their own, including a field goal in the 77th minute (off the back of a Ben Hunt fumble - Déjà vu) to claim the win. It's difficult to know whether the Broncos fell asleep or the Panthers woke up - perhaps the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Last week the Eels targeted Bryce Cartwright with their big men but he eventually came out the other side. He's not a complete footballer yet, and you can see why Laurie Daley kept him out of the Blues squad for now, but he's close. He's very close. The Panthers as a team are much like Cartwright as an individual. Plenty of talent but very young. I doubt them this year but this group of players look set to create a nice little dynasty in the years ahead. Still, I'm here to talk about Friday night. The Broncos have struggled through their difficult period and while the win over the Rabbitohs wasn't perfect there was enough positives for me to believe they're heading in the right direction.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Panthers 31 defeated Broncos 12

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium

The Warriors travelled all the way to Perth, played in atrocious conditions, played extra time and flew all the way home. Less than a week later and they're heading back to Canberra. Through all of that, the Raiders had a bye. While the forecast looks okay for Saturday it's raining in Canberra today with more to come on Friday. Those Warriors legs will be working mighty hard to get through the going this weekend. The Raiders forward pack is under-rated by most and I'd back them to match the Warriors anyway, but given the circumstances this game has all the makings of a good old-fashioned carve-up. I'm not sure how often the Raiders look at the NRL ladder but a win on Saturday gives them a spot in the top four. Actually I'm hoping they don't realise, that's just the sort of expectation that usually brings them undone.

Verdict – Raiders by 20

Result - Raiders 26 defeated Warriors 22

Gold Coast Titans vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

Greg Bird shored up his title as the most suspended player in NRL history with another suspension last round - he'll be back next week to face his former team-mates at the Sharks. Despite having a busier casualty ward than most clubs the Titans have managed to pull together a strong seventeen. Their dominant victory over the Dragons was an almost flawless performance - a repeat of that and they win again. Just about everyone is waiting for the Eels to drop their bundle but it hasn't happened yet. This week the government had to step in and kick the Parramatta Board to the kerb - surely that's about as low as you can go. I stand and applaud the players that are still there and the coach doing all he can to hold this team together. If they keep this up until the end of the season I will stand and applaud some more. For the sake of their fans I hope they do, but a weekend on the Gold Coast is a risky proposition.

Verdict – Titans by 8

Result - Titans 34 defeated Eels 14

Melbourne Storm vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – AAMI Park

I'll keep this brief - these sides played in Sydney in round 14. Tohu Harris played in the halves, and the Storm won 46-0.

Verdict – Storm by 19

Result - Storm 26 defeated Roosters 10

Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

You have to feel for the Knights. Last week they faced a top two side and were gallant in defeat. This week they face the other top two side. I'm not sure how much gallantry they have left in the tank.

Verdict – Sharks by 34

Result - Sharks 36 defeated Knights 4

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

While the late withdrawal of Benji Marshall last week probably cost me a perfect round (grrrr!) this is the perfect game for a milestone. A milestone it may be but I'm not convinced he'll get the result he would be hoping for. The Tigers are fresh from a bye and they welcome back their trio of Origin stars. On a wet track I'd give the Dragons a chance but that doesn't look likely at the minute. Dry conditions and a daytime schedule lend itself to the Tigers dynamic style. I can't see enough points in the Dragons to stay in the contest. A win for the Tigers and they're on the cusp of a finals berth. Sorry Benji.

Verdict – Tigers by 10

Result - Tigers 35 defeated Dragons 12

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Monday night – Allianz Stadium

I was surprised when the Bunnies didn't challenge the Greg Inglis suspension, and then it dawned on me - perhaps they've given up. I think they need to win the last seven games of the season to get inside the top eight. That means beating the Sharks, the Bulldogs, the Warriors in Auckland and the Storm in Melbourne. Perhaps they've given up. The Sea Eagles clearly haven't. They'll take plenty of positives out of that extra time victory over the Warriors in Perth, and I expect them to carry that momentum through Monday night. Right now you can get $1.75 about Manly on Monday night. I'm tempted (gamble responsibly).

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 8

Result - Sea Eagles 20 defeated Rabbitohs 12

Wally Lewis - round twenty selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • COWBOYS vs Bulldogs
  • BRONCOS vs Panthers
  • RAIDERS vs Warriors
  • TITANS vs Eels
  • STORM vs Roosters
  • SHARKS vs Knights
  • Dragons vs TIGERS
  • Rabbitohs vs SEA EAGLES

Coach

Please put me down for the Sharks for the last man standing comp, god I love Thursday night footy.

Have a great weekend folks, happy to see we are all back on track and being nice to each other.

Johnny Awesome's picture

To everyone here, there must be some views on coaching.
My current top ten coaches are:
1. Wayne Bennett
2. Craig Bellamy
3. Shane Flanagan ( solely for the reason I didn't rate the Sharks that much at the start of the season but gee, blind freddy can tell you they can't win all those without good coaching and mentoring)
4. Paul Green
5. Des Hadler
6.Trent Robinson ( one ordinary year doesn't make you a bad coach, he'll be back)
7. Ricky Stewart
8. Michael Maguire ( As per Trent R)
9. Brad Arthur
10. Neil Henry and Anthony Griffin.
Remember from 3rd place down they all pretty even but this ladder in my view.
Now what's left out of an ordinary bunch?
Probably the best would be Andrew McFadden followed by Jason Taylor ( I've rated Taylor low he has no people skills good head but no mentoring. In this day and age you need more than a footy brain to coach a team), Paul McGregor ( nice chap but no vision) followed by Barret and Brown running last. So that's it. Wish Toovey and Cleary could get back in the fold one day Cheers Mr A

Steel panther ur very welcome.
The thing about the eagles and the respect there is between us and the kiwis streched back a long way way back.

Let's look at some of the greats of New Zealand that have graced my great club, mathew ridge, the iro brothers ,craig innis , that's just to name a few and the great gramme Lowe coached the club as well.

We still have them playing in our club, when the eagles travel to New Zealand the respect and support we get is enormous, when the warriors play us at brooky it's always a fun hard game, but the respect both sets of fans have for each other is awesome.

Manly have another nick name I don't know if u remember we are also called Maori warringah so many great kiwis have played for my great club .

Last weeks game was the best of that round great attack, great defence and a dramatic finish all respect to the kiwi boys and good luck this weekend steel panther against the raiders , very tough game in Canberra always cold but I've tipped you r mob to come away with the win I think bunty
Ofea will start to have a cult following. Very strong and mobile and what a great name sure to be the next superstar for New Zealand.

Good luck to you steel panther have a great weekend.

And yes Christine without passion u can't love your team or the game it's what makes us love the greatest game of all.

Anyway, that's why there hasn't been any tips coming in from the Islands. Don't get carried away guys I'm talking about egos.
Hope you guys make peace soon, I'm sure you guys don't want more people leaving this site or deter new ones from joining. On that note, welcome JohnnyAwesome and doggie.

Mr Awesome, for me Brad Arthur would be in the top 4 purely for the way he has kept his playing group together in the face of off field adversity this season.
But that's my opinion, other than that, that list of yours pretty much covers it.

Coach's streak tables after Round 19

Team ... total of best 3 win streaks ... total of longest 3 losing streaks

*Knowing that the Premier somehow always only comes from one of the top three streak scores, there is huge interest in who will be #3. Looks like 7 or 8 teams can still do it. Note Cowboys and Broncos a rung further down the ladder.

*Wonder how Sharks fans react if they, by chance, have to play Bulldogs in a Prelim at ANZ, dudded just like Panthers and Manly in 2014.

1 SHARKS 14 0
2 STORM 13 0
3 EELS 8 2
4 BULLDOGS 8 2
5 RAIDERS 8 4
6 COWBOYS 7 0

Shes cool Coach - welcome back Old Son.
Panthers still going ok for mine.

I'm always later getting my tips in mate. I work and sometimes not home until 5-5.30pm. Then need to clear emails and do errands in case the cook has left me a note.

U know what its all about mate. Actually, where do you live and on a Couch isnt acceptable.

Cheers and keep well - Big Pete

Coach Potato's picture

Shit that was a pretty good crapping on impersonation, Rocket. So good I can't really tell the difference. Your down for Sharks Pete. I mean, if you were an imposter, wouldnt you have gone for someone like Newcastle?

C'mon fess up. Is this really BigPeteX ?

Else do you ever both swap phones with each for a day, just for fun ?

If the real BigPeteX shows up, he can alter the tip, but will need to prove his identity.

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Christine for keep an eye out.
I've just put my tips in. Usually late, especially if its a Thursday game on.
Go to work each day sometimes not home until 5-5.30pm.

Hope u r ok and keep well
Big Pete

Dragonsfan4ever's picture

'A', just to mention you made a little mistake with my tipping score, I'm actually on 81. Sorry if you didn't see, but in a comment I changed my tip from Rabbitohs to Broncos that means that I got 3/6, not 2/6. The week before I had 78 plus the 3 from last round equals to 81. Cheers!!!!!!!

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening Islander - Brad knows what its like to cut his teeth in the big time now. For how he's handled it, I'd rate him, especially being an ex Sea Eagle.

Keep well mate and keep those islands clean.

Good pick up Tigerholic, anyone care to impersonate Broncoswimmer in case we don't hear back by kick off?

BigPeteBx's picture

BTW Coach - I dont crap on!
I try my best to keep within the parameters of the site.
There's been more than some crap flying around here, though.

I like this site, but you might think that because I like people and those you can make friends with, that because I discuss more than League (for which the site was created), that it is crap. No worries, each to his own.
Pity the site didnt have links/categories to other discussion topics in sport or general day to day life.

So, I mix it here, with nice compliments, from people like you.

Keep well - Big Pete

Coach Potato's picture

Crapping on is city talk for Chewing The Cud.
Maybe I should have used the Country version.

BigPeteBx's picture

Water levels are rising here Rocket. But rain has stopped, for now.
Mate - why would you need an Ark when u r a Rocket.
The Ryan - is that first name or surname.

Cheers mate - have adrink by all means but watch the water.

tigerholic's picture

Coach

Seeing as I know our friend Bronco swimmer, put her in for the Sharks if she does not get back to you.

Coach Potato's picture

So fired up BigPete.
Is that you Fortress?

BigPeteBx's picture

So tell me Islander - who do you actually support in NRL - please.
I saw you tipping Manly for a few weeks and thought you might have been one of The Clan.

So going by the Coconut Palm, I figure you must be a Qld'er.

Good luck with it this week and keep well

Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Cowboys by 10- With the origin period, the Cowboys are going to go on a strong run in the latter stage of the season. It start with a win over the Bulldogs here.

Broncos by 16- Broncos are back in form. So are the Panthers with a classic win over the Eels. But I think that the Broncos just got more attacking flair and better defence then the Panthers if you think of it. The Broncos to continue their form with a big win here.

Raiders by 4- raiders to get a tight win at home here.

Eels by 4- The Eels have been great in the past several weeks although they did lose a couple of matches in that period of time. I'm backing the Eels in this one in a tight one.

Storm by 14- Storm to make it four win in a row here and to march on with their battle with the Sharks for top spot, which would be good to see the Sharks win.

Sharks by 36- Knights have been improving week by week, but the Sharks to make it 15 in a row here with a big win over the Knights. It'll be a huge downfall this week compared to last week for the Knights here.

Dragons by 4- Benji is definitely going to play his 250th in this match. Also heard that Farah got sacked by Tigers coach JT. The Dragons to win it for Benji. But, we will do it tough as we have in most of our wins this season.

And finally... Manly by 8- Manly to continue on their merry ways here. I know that Manly still have a huge injury toll, but they have played well in the last couple of weeks with the large amount injuries. And I know that I said that the Rabbitohs will bounce back, but now I'm not so sure about that now with Inglis out for a couple more games which has a big effect on the Bunnies. So yeah my pick is Manly to make it 3 in a row here.

Awesome. That's done. Should be another great round this week with the origin period gone for good. Now it's the battle for the top 8 spot for some teams who either still have a chance for the finals, that are outside the 8, or teams in the 8 who srtill haven't secured their top 8 spot yet. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Sorry for the Cowboys-Bulldogs game, I meant with the origin period done and dusted.

BigPeteBx's picture

Agree with you "a".
Thanks for doing the score matchup with us Also Rans (Unattached) comp.

Yes, and also good to see some showing their colors with a motif/logo.

Cheers - Big PeteBx

fortresseagle's picture

Big Pete nice to hear your in fine voice . Were going for 3 in a row than the knights at brookie great draw they need to focus one game at a time and the rest will folkie

Have a great evening big man.

Thinker, I think whatever the record was for posts before game one of a round especially on a Thursday, just got blown out of the water.

Coach Potato's picture

Thinker, can you recall the last time there was an 18 year old, let alone a star 18 year old 1st Grade number 7 ? I know Fittler played the '90 Grand Final as an eighteener, but otherwise I'm struggling.

Baggy_Gee's picture

So quick question, Does Parra keep anyone out of the top 3 streaks if they get up over the Titans, or is our streak null and void this year?

Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Johnny Awesome, it's great to see you on this site. It's good to see another Dragons fan here. Lastly, I have had trouble with this before, I've asked others for help but I got no success with it now I'm just going to ask you since you are new here and is not a member on the tipping ladder on this site. Please tell me how I add a picture. I want a picture added so I can feel more apart on this site, this also goes to everyone. Nice to talk to you for the first time. Cheers and go the mighty Dragons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dragonsfan4ever's picture

Well you are new here, but you being new here might actually help me with adding a picture Johnny. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!

BroncoSwimmer's picture

hi Coach, didn't realise what I had done, glad Tigerholic was on the ball.
Sharkies please!

Coach Potato's picture

No Baggy, Parra is an interesting one.

Should they improve their streak score and finish 3rd, in my books that leaves only Sharks and Storm that can win.

Seeing as Parra have streaks of 3, 2, and 3 - the only way they get to 9 is to have a other 3 streak.(so then have streaks of 3, 3,and 3).

There's still 2 more top 4 spots for teams that can reach 10. Easy to think who it might be, apart from Parra of course, but still lots of possibilities.

Coach Potato's picture

No worries Broncoswimmer. Chances are fair that you could have been hacked, and your tip sabotaged.

BigPeteBx's picture

Welcome Doggie (ex Wests Fibrons).
The Old Oberon Spud Diggers eh!
Cold at Oberon - NO. Plenty of snow never cold.

I doubt Doggie you want to give any names away. I seem to be familiarised with that area myself.
Do these names ring a bell with you - Jock & Gil Schrader, Butch Rawlings whose sons both played with Wests Magpies with Bruce Gibbs and Allan Latham (ex Bathurst Railway).

If you were there in the day, Craig Bellamy played with Oberon. My mates father was publican at Tourist Hotel Oberon and Secretary of Oberon Tigers RLFC when he secured Craig from Portland.
Another good footballer from Portland was Mal Fitzgerald who Mr Awesome might know. BUT, the best footballer Oberon ever had, was Tony Paskins as both player and coach. The Bonecrushers were the St George of Country Football and won about 8 grand finals straight.

Cheers and hope that brings back some memories for you.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Yeah mate - what about The Wollembi Pine and the Capertee/Lue area with its natural wonders.
The Regent Honeyeater, is being naturalised back into the bush area.

Yes a few Sea Eagles there now as well or as passers by.

Mudgee Dragons used to have Manly and St George play pre-season fixtures at the former Jubilee Oval but they are now over at the Taj Mahal of Glen Willow.

Cheers - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Although you asked Thinker - I recall the great Arko bringing Bozo to Manly (from Wollongong) at age 17, but I cant recall his starting number.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hey Big Pete carpentee also has a great pub called the Capertee pub and. Surprise surprise so does Lue. Well well well Big Pete is this asign? Cheers Mr Awesome

christine's picture

Johnny awesome My father has been a saints supporter since 66 so he tells me , just thought you would like to know .

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
The first name that comes to mind is Tim Brasher. Got the call up from warren Ryan while he was still in high school. Played in the 89 grand final in a very good Balmain side.

Cleary has a way to go before he is that good...but Penrith shouldn't let him go that's for sure.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I would not have called 32-0. Far outside what I have been watching the last few weeks.
