Round twenty selections

North Queensland Cowboys vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

While being a Sydney-based team is not without its challenges, it also comes with a few advantages. Take the Bulldogs for example - here we are in Round 20 and they've played just three games all season outside of Sydney. One of those games they moved by choice - taking a home game to New Zealand (and picking up a cheque for their troubles). Ten of their seventeen games this season have been at ANZ Stadium, plus another game at Belmore. They lost two of their three games away from Sydney, but they did beat the Storm in Melbourne. They'll need to find that level again to succeed on Thursday. While the Bulldogs have left Sydney just three times the Cowboys have left Townsville nine times, but it's when they play at home they shine. Eight games at home without loss, and there's been some big wins too. Their last home game was a four point win over the Sea Eagles, but that was backing up from Origin duty. They should be nice and fresh on Thursday night, and the timely return of Michael Morgan means this side can start focussing all it's energy on defending their title. That's Everest, but I'm confident they can scale Mt Bulldog on Thursday night.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Cowboys 36 defeated Bulldogs 0

Brisbane Broncos vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

Back in round three these sides squared off in Penrith, where the Broncos racked up four tries in the first half and stopped. The Panthers responded with 17 points of their own, including a field goal in the 77th minute (off the back of a Ben Hunt fumble - Déjà vu) to claim the win. It's difficult to know whether the Broncos fell asleep or the Panthers woke up - perhaps the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Last week the Eels targeted Bryce Cartwright with their big men but he eventually came out the other side. He's not a complete footballer yet, and you can see why Laurie Daley kept him out of the Blues squad for now, but he's close. He's very close. The Panthers as a team are much like Cartwright as an individual. Plenty of talent but very young. I doubt them this year but this group of players look set to create a nice little dynasty in the years ahead. Still, I'm here to talk about Friday night. The Broncos have struggled through their difficult period and while the win over the Rabbitohs wasn't perfect there was enough positives for me to believe they're heading in the right direction.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Panthers 31 defeated Broncos 12

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium

The Warriors travelled all the way to Perth, played in atrocious conditions, played extra time and flew all the way home. Less than a week later and they're heading back to Canberra. Through all of that, the Raiders had a bye. While the forecast looks okay for Saturday it's raining in Canberra today with more to come on Friday. Those Warriors legs will be working mighty hard to get through the going this weekend. The Raiders forward pack is under-rated by most and I'd back them to match the Warriors anyway, but given the circumstances this game has all the makings of a good old-fashioned carve-up. I'm not sure how often the Raiders look at the NRL ladder but a win on Saturday gives them a spot in the top four. Actually I'm hoping they don't realise, that's just the sort of expectation that usually brings them undone.

Verdict – Raiders by 20

Result - Raiders 26 defeated Warriors 22

Gold Coast Titans vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

Greg Bird shored up his title as the most suspended player in NRL history with another suspension last round - he'll be back next week to face his former team-mates at the Sharks. Despite having a busier casualty ward than most clubs the Titans have managed to pull together a strong seventeen. Their dominant victory over the Dragons was an almost flawless performance - a repeat of that and they win again. Just about everyone is waiting for the Eels to drop their bundle but it hasn't happened yet. This week the government had to step in and kick the Parramatta Board to the kerb - surely that's about as low as you can go. I stand and applaud the players that are still there and the coach doing all he can to hold this team together. If they keep this up until the end of the season I will stand and applaud some more. For the sake of their fans I hope they do, but a weekend on the Gold Coast is a risky proposition.

Verdict – Titans by 8

Result - Titans 34 defeated Eels 14

Melbourne Storm vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – AAMI Park

I'll keep this brief - these sides played in Sydney in round 14. Tohu Harris played in the halves, and the Storm won 46-0.

Verdict – Storm by 19

Result - Storm 26 defeated Roosters 10

Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

You have to feel for the Knights. Last week they faced a top two side and were gallant in defeat. This week they face the other top two side. I'm not sure how much gallantry they have left in the tank.

Verdict – Sharks by 34

Result - Sharks 36 defeated Knights 4

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

While the late withdrawal of Benji Marshall last week probably cost me a perfect round (grrrr!) this is the perfect game for a milestone. A milestone it may be but I'm not convinced he'll get the result he would be hoping for. The Tigers are fresh from a bye and they welcome back their trio of Origin stars. On a wet track I'd give the Dragons a chance but that doesn't look likely at the minute. Dry conditions and a daytime schedule lend itself to the Tigers dynamic style. I can't see enough points in the Dragons to stay in the contest. A win for the Tigers and they're on the cusp of a finals berth. Sorry Benji.

Verdict – Tigers by 10

Result - Tigers 35 defeated Dragons 12

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Monday night – Allianz Stadium

I was surprised when the Bunnies didn't challenge the Greg Inglis suspension, and then it dawned on me - perhaps they've given up. I think they need to win the last seven games of the season to get inside the top eight. That means beating the Sharks, the Bulldogs, the Warriors in Auckland and the Storm in Melbourne. Perhaps they've given up. The Sea Eagles clearly haven't. They'll take plenty of positives out of that extra time victory over the Warriors in Perth, and I expect them to carry that momentum through Monday night. Right now you can get $1.75 about Manly on Monday night. I'm tempted (gamble responsibly).

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 8

Result - Sea Eagles 20 defeated Rabbitohs 12

Wally Lewis - round twenty selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • COWBOYS vs Bulldogs
  • BRONCOS vs Panthers
  • RAIDERS vs Warriors
  • TITANS vs Eels
  • STORM vs Roosters
  • SHARKS vs Knights
  • Dragons vs TIGERS
  • Rabbitohs vs SEA EAGLES

Here's a topic that may pull Coach Potato out of his shell.

The Rugby League World Cup draw for 2017 has been announced - the tournament will be hosted by Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

Sydney gets two games all tournament - a pool game between England and Lebanon and a pool game between Australia and Lebanon.

That's it. Canberra gets more games than Sydney. Sydney has no more games than Cairns, Townsville, Perth or Hamilton.

Darwin gets a quarter final. Brisbane gets a semi-final and the final. Sydney gets none.

Discuss....

a's picture

Come on coach you can comment

Baggy_Gee's picture

Not to sure what agenda they are pushing, I know they are trying to spread the game outside NSW, but even the AFL keeps the mecca of AFL in Melbourne. Maybe its just the fact that either the balance of power has shifted to more northern clubs having the say at a board level, or channel 7 had some discussion. But it will be a good testing ground for non Brisbane/Australian teams drawing a crowd to Suncorp. Might vindicate what some of us think, no Broncos, no crowd.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Friday night Mark we get that monkey off our back I'll give it to coach from suncorp both barrels he wont be sitting on the couch he will be hidden under it

fortresseagle's picture

My tips for round 20

Mighty sea eagles......the boys starting to fire, the rabbits will put up a fight but the mighty eagles to come home strong By 14

Bulldogs....... This is a real tough one the cows at home but a think they have a few out but thurston is there so always a chance but I'm going the upset Dogs by 4

Broncos............I think the broncos may of turned the corner with the last win,it will be a good game but the broncos to flex there muscles and prevail Broncos by 10

Warriors........great game with the eagles they played well the raiders always tough at home but I'm leaning towards the kiwi boys to take the win. Warriors by 4

Eels.......another hard one to pick the titans at home would be the logical pick but the eels were strong early against the panthers if they play the 80 mts they may edge home. Eels by 2

Storm........this could be the upset of the year I think the roosters could surprise here unlucky against sharks but home ground advantage and more class Storm by 10

Sharks.....14 in a row what a great performance by them tough won last start but they keep winning can't see the knights stopping the streak, sharks will be far too strong. Sharks by 18

Tiger........with all due respects to drag queens supporters how they sit where they sit on the ladder is a mystery devoid of attack and flat as a tack. The tigers have more spark in attack and will streak home. Tigers by 14

That's my tips Everyone may the better teams win and hope your all having a great night......................

Rock on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Potato's picture

A female regular was physically threatened with violence. The name calling trash wasn't enough for this person.

The post was taken down, but the one that harboured those horrendous thoughts freely roams these pages. What's more, he rallied troops. What's even worse, others either don't recall the incident or post as if they don't care.

As it stands, I can't contribute to a page that welcomes people like this. I would love to continue, but morally, there's just no way that will happen.

fortresseagle's picture

Once again I have been put in a position to defend myself.

Anyone that read that post mark ashford and big Pete and whoever read it know it was never directed at Christine never ever.

Mark ashford sent Christine a post telling her how coud she think it was directed at her he also pointed out the constant hatred he posted towards the broncos.

So mark is not telling the truth I don't think so . Ever since I came on this site and posted coach has taken it upon himself to degrade my team and attack my style of thought and attacking my intelligence , if that's not abuse I don't know What is.

Now. A fellow eagles supporter comes on which he accused of been me meaning big Pete must be me or any other manly supporter is me I mean come on.

So is coach steel panther or any other Penrith supporter that comes on hear is he saying that mark ashford is rocket Ryan I don't think so.

I have a mother and sister who I love dearly I have never raised a finger to a women in my life thank god, we have enough violence against women in our game today.

So what we have here is a grown up man that won't give up till he gets his way but why we all have the rights to support who we want I mean what competition would we have if we all went for the same team we would not have one.

Let's talk footy we all have. Difference if opinion we all have. Passion and we all have our rights to be who we want to be not to be constantly put down because some people don't agree with us or hate our clubs.

Football is the topic here hate my team as much as you like does that mean we will stop supporting them.

I'm not perfect I've made mistakes on here but violence towards women never I respect Christine like I would respect my mother.i have never been rude to her never not one post her struggles and her dignity deserves respect and she has mine and I speak hopefully for all on this site.

Football is the topic let's get on with it for god sake.

a's picture

You know that Steel Panther doesn't actually support Panthers he supports Warriors Fortress

fortresseagle's picture

That's fine he supports the warriors strange that with a panther logo but I'm happy to go with that.

The bottom line here is how cam he accuse eagle rocks of Been me so big Pete is me and any others manly supporter he would believe is me I mean fair dinkum can someone please explain.

Everyone that read the post knows it had nothing to do with Christine read mark ashfords post he is in mind one of the most respected people on this site why would he know it himself he was telling the truth.

It's plain and simple coach does not want me on this site he has hated me from day one . Just like he hates my club .

Why the vendetta why the lies he used a lady who only wants a voice on this site who only wants to be respected he couldn't care less about her feelings and lied to make out it was her I made reference to in that post,

Did he care about Christine's feelings and god knows what she thought of me, as he painted me out to be a person of violence towards this lady when through a vindictive assault on me he twisted it to hopefully have me off this site.

I think this is going to far to a point where someone has to step in and stop this disgraceful behaviour it's finished stop now the topic is football this is a football site.

So from this post forward that's all I'm going to be talking about the footy no more coach is not going to change it's a waste of time and I'm over it.

It's round 20 of the nrl , the finals around the corner I think we should all be excited with the great football that lies ahead of us

Let's talk football it's the greatest game of all ..................fortress eagle

a's picture

I think the reasons why coach isn't coming back is because of you fortress

fortresseagle's picture

Ok because of me so u condone his behaviour are you calling mark a liar he lied and used Christine to get rid of me how would you feel been in my position, look it doesn't take Einstine to figure out you and coach have never liked me weather it's jelousey or hatred I don't know.

This behaviour tells me of a mental illness but that shouldn't excuse his behaviour.

He doesn't know me all he does is judge me he hates me and my club you can deny it as much as you like cowboy but you know it and the feeling is mutual.

So what get rid of me and all the manly supporters who he thinks are me anyway I mean who the hell does he think he is he does not run this site , he comments like the rest of us he is not perfect no one is .

My family have said ignore him everyone has so I'm going to

Like I said it's his problem he can work it out with himself I want to talk football so that's it .

Hate me I don't mind hate my club I don't mind but I will always love my club just like you love yours.

Talk football that's final .

Fortress of brookvale .

fortresseagle's picture

Just on the football

My no brainers are: the eagles vs rabbits and the sharks vs the knights

My coin toss games; the dogs vs cowboys and the eels vs titans

And the upset could come from the roosters vs storm

Tough round to pick anyway off to work have a good one everyone

Fortress eagle from the home of the mighty eaglesssssss

Steel Panther's picture

Geez I've been forced into changing my logo.......

The Thinker's picture

Well played Steel

christine's picture

Steel Panther You can have what ever logo you want , no more talk of who said what & who did what I for one have had enough of it it's infuriating & coach you are to stay on site please c'mon your needed on site to keep things in order .

christine's picture

Coach has been on this site longer than you fortress & coach is staying on this site if I have anything to do with it now no more talk of who said what & who did what both of you call a truce even if you don't want to & leave each other alone .

fortresseagle's picture

Christine it's not about the length of time someone has been on this site. I'm sorry but no one can condone that sort of behaviour.he won't come back till he gets me and anyone else that supports manly.im sick and tired of this myself I have said it already let's talk football.

So what I say is come on post to people u want to post to if u don't like someone or someone else's club than move on and dont reply to them.

Simple let's all get along and talk football hope ur having a great day Christine what's been done has been done , this is a footy site let's get on with the game and leave the hate behind. The rivalry is great but we don't need hatred so the past is the past .

So come on and talk footy if u hate me and my footy club that's up to you . But it sounds like Christine wants u back so do it for her not for me. Forget the past it's do be we don't have to like one another coach but we can respect one another and our clubs.

So coach I'm sending an olive branch to you and ask you to grace us with your presence.

Good now that's done let's get on with life and talk footy have a great day Christine and keep smiling ok.

Fortress eagle of brooky.........

Ps . Sorry steel panther didn't mean to upset you I saw the logo and thought u supported the panthers....... So ur a warrior great game last week. Thriller with the mighty eagles .....I have tipped them this week hope they win for you good luck.

Fortress Eagles forever

Johnny Awesome's picture

Tips from the original Johnny Awesome are simply all the home teams and Manly to win. Go the Dragons. Dragons biggest issue is their coach. He has not gelled the forwards with the backs. The half and centre combinations are disjointed. Basically like Einstein said, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Sadly Paul M needs some help. In saying that, what they have on paper is a very reasonable team and maybe this week they can scrape through. Cheers from Mr A

christine's picture

Johnny awesome Let me be the first to welcome you to the site , in regards to dragons I think benji is the problem & I don't no why they haven't off loaded him yet unless it's simply because no one else wants him which is understandable .

tigerholic's picture

Coach

I think we can wipe the slate clean and start fresh, what do you reckon.

I actually miss your posts and would like to see everyone concentrate on the footy, come on Coach and for the record, I am on your side.

BoozeMaster2000's picture

Cowboys vs Bulldogs. I am really looking forward to this one! Should be a great night of footy. There is every possibility that this could be a grand final preview, in my opinion. I’m leaning towards the dogs believe it or not. I think they have a good bit of momentum just now, and the cowboys have been looking a little unsteady of late in my humble opinion. Well, not the invincible machine they looked at the start of the season anyway. But, the thinker says cows, so I’m gonna tip cows too, because I’m just a sheep who is too afraid to stand by my own opinions. But, if the Bulldogs DO win, everyone has to come back on this site and tell me how great I am for pointing out the possibility of a dogs win.

Coach, are we still putting in our on the couch tips? Or is that game finished now? I was 100% sure of winning that game, so seems a shame to stop now. If its still on, please put me down for the Sea Eagles if I haven’t tipped them yet.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Put it in Boozy, I'll follow up come Thursday afternoon.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Who do you count as your BOYS there Boozy? Just a fraction interested in that bit of trivia.

BoozeMaster2000's picture

Cowboys supporter here mate.

mark ashford's picture

OK so we're not quite over this.
1. Fortress's comment was directed at "a" NOT Christine. How you thought it was Christine, Coach is beyond me.
2. It was said as a joke (using a face as a dart board) there was no malice it was just a joke.
3. Thinker runs this site and it's up to him to bar someone if he thinks necessary.
4. We still have freedom of speech in this country (thank God)
5. We should be allowed to criticise clubs, players but not each other (except in a friendly manner) so said the fun police.
6. If you don't like what's being said, you are free to speak out.
7 . Keep your comments accurate, objective and certainly not abusive.
8. Racist, sexist or otherwise derogatory comments are barred. AND the fairer sex are more than welcome here.
9.Anyone who doesn't like what's being said are free to leave or return as they wish.
10. You must support your club/state no matter what, with passion.

There we have the 10 commandments for the Thinkers site (please with no disrespect for any religious beliefs)
Well the first two aren't relevant but I tried.
So I'll add two more.
New 1. Enjoy your footy remember it's only a game.
New 2. Love this wonderful country and gamble responsibly.

a's picture

Come on coach comment I agree with Christine Coach was here 1st so he should stay

BoozeMaster2000's picture

11. Always brush your teeth BEFORE you put on your tie.

12. Saying 'I'm sorry', and saying 'I apologise' means the same thing EXCEPT when you are at a funeral.

christine's picture

Mark that about sums it up but I break one of those rules I don't support my state I live in nsw but I support qld & i'm not going to change it for anyone .

a's picture

Here are my tips

Cowboys by 6 its a tough one for the Cowboys but the best team ever will win

Broncos by 10 I think Broncos are going to win 2 in a row here

Raiders by 4 I think Raiders are going to win here at home

Titans by 6 I think Titans are going to be finals contenders here

Storm by 12 Roosters will give Storm a run for their money but Storm will win by 12 here

Sharks by 62 last time they played Sharks won 62-0 it will be the same scoreline here

West Tigers by 2 I think Tigers are going to end Dragons season here

Rabbitohs by i I think Rabbitohs are going to win in a thriller here

and Baggy or Coach put me down for Sharks this week

fortresseagle's picture

Well said mark ashford the Ten Commandments Moses would be proud of you.

Very cold and wet I'm sydney hope it drys up for the weekend really looking forward to the games, most games could define a lot of teams season.

Mark I feel that now the broncos are not the bookies favourites could work for them the pressure of expecting them to win is now released I think this spells danger.

Hello to big Pete and eagle rocks and all you footy lovers out there.

Off to the gym smile everyone life's too short.

Fortress eagle from the sands of manly beach grains of gold!!!!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Boozy love it mate.
After a big night on the p-ss Iv'e been known to put on my clobber, then do the teeth, then shave and then shower. Couldn't find the tie.
Not a good look when you get to work.
With people asking "is it raining?"

Chris you support who want to. Tiger lives in QLD but is a BLUES man.
It's all about your passion.

BigPete Thinker is a Maroons supporter but supports the Roosters at club level. Told us about 3 million posts ago.
Better get to my picks for this week.

christine's picture

I'm taking the same this week as the thinker for my tips & for the couch comp coach put me down for tigers .

mark ashford's picture

OK down to the real reason we are here.
Cowboys, at home too good
Broncos, for the same reason
Raiders, could surprise us all
Titans, at home and going well
Storm, too much class
Sharks, by how much?
Tigers, no Robbie but doesn't matter
Manly, they are on a roll

Coach/ Baggy I'll take the Sharks for the couch thing.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Thank you Christine for your warm welcome. Sadly, I wish we could blame it all on Benji but they losing worse when he is not there. Give me Ivan Cleary or Geoff Toovey as a coach for the Dragons and lose Mary. Nice as Mary is he is devoid of ideas. Under Cleary or Toovey the Dragons would get some back. Thank you Christine and hello to all the others who inhabit the site cheers Mr A

BigPeteBx's picture

Like it all Mark - 10 Commandments for The 12 Apostles.

You forgot one thing - Ginger BEER
BoozeMaster excluded, as he appears to make a mess of things.

We can all have what we like and the esky choice is what ever colour you wish. I dont mind those SoO Qld XXXX ones as seen in their dressing shed. But better a blue one for me.

No wine until the game is over - women excluded as some only tipple.
Then the whining can start.

Plenty of water here today folks - 37mm of rain and floods are occuring.

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Mark for the word on Thinker.
To follow Chooks he must have had some former NSW allegiance - did he.

I think by chance Tiger said he came from around Raymond Terrace (Port Stephens area). Nice country there - always nice near the water, but we're getting heaps of it here at the moment.

Mate sorry, but I wasn't here 3million posts ago.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes welcome J A - hope you enjoy the friendship that is here.
R u a Sydney Dragon (Carlton, Ramsgate, Kogarah or Rockdale area).
Or one like a few I work with. One very vocal and others who only show their face when winning.

So nice that you also mentioned Cleary and Tooves. Both ex Sea Eagles.
But I know where u r coming from. I would say in time, that Cleary might just return to Brooky.

mark ashford's picture

Mr A Can I also welcome you to the site after our much loved Christine.
The Dragons are going through a tough time mate.
Not sure if Mary is the problem or recruitment or whatever.
If it's Mary then you could not go wrong with Tooves.
Never been a more passionate player/coach in the NRL.
As you're new I'd better say I'm a Broncs / QLDer as bad as you can get.
BUT I love to see this comp as even as it can get and the best man wins.

Anyway Johnnie Awesome, welcome and good luck to your Dragons.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I'm actually an original Mudgee Dragon. Grew up in Kandos played rugby league in Mudgee. I played in the days scrums were scrums and you gave your own player an uppercut to get him motivated. Been following the St George Dragons all my life. Cheers Mr A

BigPete Monica was on a CNN White House report and they filmed her in a Chinese restaurant where the specialty was deep fried duck's bills.
She looked at the camera and said "that bill was the sweetest thing I've ever eaten"
The director called "cut" and walked away.
Monica put on weight and the rest is history.

Enjoy your week!

Things I'm Still Working Through

# ok so I got a female threat mixed up with a male threat. Still not really called for though. Thinker himself classed it as profane so the least you might expect if you got a reprimand like that would be something more than standing one's ground.

#Need to be clear, I'm not calling for anyone to be banned here. The issue is about me and whether I continue to contribute. What I do shouldn't affect anyone else.

#Has anything actually changed in a week? Curiously yes. There's been a huge change in writing attituses since deletion of that post which is commendable I must say.

#Would this page live on without me?
No doubt yes but would need a new replacement to stir the pot, to continually raise discussion points, provide weird stats and theories, games and the like. No, I better face it. I'm not very easily replaced.

I better stay.

mark ashford's picture

Johnny A. It's great to have a fair dinkum Dragons supporter/player here.
If you remember those scrums then you remember the great heritage of your club. What was it 10 premierships in a row? (pre cap days)
Gasnier (not the FOX nephew) and all those great players.
Look forward to your comments mate.

mark ashford's picture

COACH you egomaniac YES may I be the first to say WELCOME BACK!!!

Johnny Awesome's picture

I live in Nations Capital now. Came here in 1985. Apparently I classified as a local now, you need to serve at least 30 yrs here to qualify. Anyway, Raiders are my number 2 team. I'm happy with what Ricky Stewart is trying to create here. It's a home culture but different to the Storm. Whereas the Storm developed a siege mentality and player bond with defend our pride at all costs, Ricky is trying to create a culture of player bondage but he is gearing to a family orientated culture. I like that. Ricky is a family man himself and he may have critics but he knows how important close family ties can help a player. The other advantage is that he is attracting quality players to club. Yep the Raiders have a bright future and will be competive and who knows one day be title contenders.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Here are ten of my favourite players from my era I liked for the mighty Dragons. Graeme Langlangs, Stevey Morris, Golden boots Henry Tartner, Teddy Goodwin, Rid Reddy, Steve Edge, Billy Smith, Barry Beath, Craig Young, and Mark Coyne.

mark ashford's picture

COACH now I'm over my initial happiness.
I must say you add a lot to this site and if you look at the previous posts everyone wants you here.
I will always fight about Panthers/Broncos dominance and that's how it should be.
Fortress is posting well and now we can all get on with supporting our clubs.
Baggy did a good job of filling in while you were away.

You had to come back anyway as there is unfinished business between our clubs.
Friday night at Suncorp, Ponies to trample the Black Cats. 20 to 12

Sorry about typos in previous messages. Phone typing is for the teenagers these days :-)

The Thinker's picture

BigPeteBx,
I've been around a while, and when I was a kid I followed both the BRL and the NSWRFL.

I was born in Redcliffe so I supported the Dolphins up here, but I had no geographical ties with Sydney at all.

I ended up supporting the Roosters because Arthur Beetson (a former Dolphin) was their at the time. Plus I liked their colours and that classic V jersey. I was five...it made sense at the time.

The Chooks were quite a team in 1974/75*, but I was too young to remember them, so my first Roosters premiership I can remember was in 2002 - I waited decades for that one.

As for the Dolphins, I didn't see a premiership from them until 1994. Again, decades of waiting, and by then the Broncos and the expansion of the Sydney competition had well and truly changed the rugby league landscape in this part of the world.

* regarding that 1974/5 Roosters side. They were an extraordinary team - I would say the most dominant club team in my lifetime.

In 74, a points differential for the season of +315 - when a try was only three points. Only one other team had a higher differential of more than +100. They didn't concede a try in the preliminary final or the grand final.

In 75, they lost just two games all season, and won the grand final 38-0.

And they were pretty to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUKBLDAx-eI

mark ashford's picture

Johhnie A...you're showing your age there mate, as a QLDer can't recall a lot of those players but sure they went well.
Yeah Ricky has been probably one of the most castigated coachs in the NRL. He's now doing good things with the Raiders and hopefully in the near future he will get a result.
He played well for the Raiders and NSW....a reward would be nice.
