Round twenty selections

North Queensland Cowboys vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

While being a Sydney-based team is not without its challenges, it also comes with a few advantages. Take the Bulldogs for example - here we are in Round 20 and they've played just three games all season outside of Sydney. One of those games they moved by choice - taking a home game to New Zealand (and picking up a cheque for their troubles). Ten of their seventeen games this season have been at ANZ Stadium, plus another game at Belmore. They lost two of their three games away from Sydney, but they did beat the Storm in Melbourne. They'll need to find that level again to succeed on Thursday. While the Bulldogs have left Sydney just three times the Cowboys have left Townsville nine times, but it's when they play at home they shine. Eight games at home without loss, and there's been some big wins too. Their last home game was a four point win over the Sea Eagles, but that was backing up from Origin duty. They should be nice and fresh on Thursday night, and the timely return of Michael Morgan means this side can start focussing all it's energy on defending their title. That's Everest, but I'm confident they can scale Mt Bulldog on Thursday night.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result - Cowboys 36 defeated Bulldogs 0

Brisbane Broncos vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

Back in round three these sides squared off in Penrith, where the Broncos racked up four tries in the first half and stopped. The Panthers responded with 17 points of their own, including a field goal in the 77th minute (off the back of a Ben Hunt fumble - Déjà vu) to claim the win. It's difficult to know whether the Broncos fell asleep or the Panthers woke up - perhaps the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Last week the Eels targeted Bryce Cartwright with their big men but he eventually came out the other side. He's not a complete footballer yet, and you can see why Laurie Daley kept him out of the Blues squad for now, but he's close. He's very close. The Panthers as a team are much like Cartwright as an individual. Plenty of talent but very young. I doubt them this year but this group of players look set to create a nice little dynasty in the years ahead. Still, I'm here to talk about Friday night. The Broncos have struggled through their difficult period and while the win over the Rabbitohs wasn't perfect there was enough positives for me to believe they're heading in the right direction.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Panthers 31 defeated Broncos 12

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium

The Warriors travelled all the way to Perth, played in atrocious conditions, played extra time and flew all the way home. Less than a week later and they're heading back to Canberra. Through all of that, the Raiders had a bye. While the forecast looks okay for Saturday it's raining in Canberra today with more to come on Friday. Those Warriors legs will be working mighty hard to get through the going this weekend. The Raiders forward pack is under-rated by most and I'd back them to match the Warriors anyway, but given the circumstances this game has all the makings of a good old-fashioned carve-up. I'm not sure how often the Raiders look at the NRL ladder but a win on Saturday gives them a spot in the top four. Actually I'm hoping they don't realise, that's just the sort of expectation that usually brings them undone.

Verdict – Raiders by 20

Result - Raiders 26 defeated Warriors 22

Gold Coast Titans vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

Greg Bird shored up his title as the most suspended player in NRL history with another suspension last round - he'll be back next week to face his former team-mates at the Sharks. Despite having a busier casualty ward than most clubs the Titans have managed to pull together a strong seventeen. Their dominant victory over the Dragons was an almost flawless performance - a repeat of that and they win again. Just about everyone is waiting for the Eels to drop their bundle but it hasn't happened yet. This week the government had to step in and kick the Parramatta Board to the kerb - surely that's about as low as you can go. I stand and applaud the players that are still there and the coach doing all he can to hold this team together. If they keep this up until the end of the season I will stand and applaud some more. For the sake of their fans I hope they do, but a weekend on the Gold Coast is a risky proposition.

Verdict – Titans by 8

Result - Titans 34 defeated Eels 14

Melbourne Storm vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – AAMI Park

I'll keep this brief - these sides played in Sydney in round 14. Tohu Harris played in the halves, and the Storm won 46-0.

Verdict – Storm by 19

Result - Storm 26 defeated Roosters 10

Cronulla Sharks vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

You have to feel for the Knights. Last week they faced a top two side and were gallant in defeat. This week they face the other top two side. I'm not sure how much gallantry they have left in the tank.

Verdict – Sharks by 34

Result - Sharks 36 defeated Knights 4

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

While the late withdrawal of Benji Marshall last week probably cost me a perfect round (grrrr!) this is the perfect game for a milestone. A milestone it may be but I'm not convinced he'll get the result he would be hoping for. The Tigers are fresh from a bye and they welcome back their trio of Origin stars. On a wet track I'd give the Dragons a chance but that doesn't look likely at the minute. Dry conditions and a daytime schedule lend itself to the Tigers dynamic style. I can't see enough points in the Dragons to stay in the contest. A win for the Tigers and they're on the cusp of a finals berth. Sorry Benji.

Verdict – Tigers by 10

Result - Tigers 35 defeated Dragons 12

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Monday night – Allianz Stadium

I was surprised when the Bunnies didn't challenge the Greg Inglis suspension, and then it dawned on me - perhaps they've given up. I think they need to win the last seven games of the season to get inside the top eight. That means beating the Sharks, the Bulldogs, the Warriors in Auckland and the Storm in Melbourne. Perhaps they've given up. The Sea Eagles clearly haven't. They'll take plenty of positives out of that extra time victory over the Warriors in Perth, and I expect them to carry that momentum through Monday night. Right now you can get $1.75 about Manly on Monday night. I'm tempted (gamble responsibly).

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 8

Result - Sea Eagles 20 defeated Rabbitohs 12

Wally Lewis - round twenty selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • COWBOYS vs Bulldogs
  • BRONCOS vs Panthers
  • RAIDERS vs Warriors
  • TITANS vs Eels
  • STORM vs Roosters
  • SHARKS vs Knights
  • Dragons vs TIGERS
  • Rabbitohs vs SEA EAGLES

Nice memories Thinker. Yes they did well in 74/75 but had won nothing before that for years or after for as many years.
Being a Redcliffe boy why not just switch to the Broncs after all they were doing better than the Roosters on entry.

Rightio,
Cowboys - I agree with Boozy here, the Cowboys have felt soft recently, not their usual couldn't pull the skin of custard soft, but mentally soft. I can't put it down to anything concrete, I'm going to tip them but wouldn't be at all surprised if they got beaten this Thursday.

Broncos - I hate weeks where I tip 66% of the QLD teams, but the issue I see with the Panthers is their attack. I know they ran 4 easy tries inside 15 odd minutes against the BOYS last week, but when Manu went home to the right edge and Beau when back to where he belongs in the second row, the points stopped. The Bronco's edge defence is a hell of a lot better than Sunday gone, might be an interesting game in the end. Unless Hunt drops a few sitters and that will be that.

Raiders - High scoring game, best way to bill this. The Raiders can really stack on the points, so can the Warriors, but the converse, who can defend for the 80? I'm not a believer yet in the Warriors, their attack yes, their ability to win, no.

Eels - The best part of the weekend, Saturday night on the coast, Brad is back to vs his old team, and Jennings is out. Sad that it is through injury, but its good we are replacing a superstar with a great team man. Bevan will get a lot of (hopefully) good service, but that right edge will be sorely tested all night. The BOYS can do it.

Storm - Watch the early game and tune in for the score. Will be closer than last time, and the Storm like the Sharks were pushed by a more desperate team. Will it change the result this weekend, not an iota.

Sharks - The two teams wwwaaaayyyyy out front of the compertition get to swap opponents from last week. The Knights will feel that they can get the job done after going close last week. My feeling is that the Sharks need a lose to refocus them for the end of the season, forget the record, focus on the Premiership.

Tigers - The Tigers aren't crap, and with Robbie apparently out, they get even better. But i think it will be more the Dragons missing on game day more so then the Tigers blowing them off the park.

Manly - Rough one to finish off with. Both teams under performing, Manly with the better running in the last few weeks. About all I can think of.

Coach I'll have the Raiders if I haven't taken them yet this last man standing please.

tigerholic's picture

Welcome back Coach, can we please have the official updated version of the last man standing comp, just in case someone like Rocket takes the same team twice.

Robbie Farah may have played his last game in first grade for the Tigers, he must be the most expensive reserve grader running around.

Once again, welcome back and I agree that the posts have been much better. I have to this weekend take a few roughies if I want to catch Rik, Nik and the thinker, so for all of those out there who still follow my tips I will have them up tomorrow.

Go the Tigers

Hey, does anyone remember May 2000 when the Raiders beat the Wests Tigers at Canberra Stadium in the snow, I do. I recall a Raider getting tackled approximately 10 m out from the Tigers goal line and sliding in for 10m a try on the icy slippery ground. The Wed before we played tennis in the snow at Weston Creek. Cheers Mr A

I don't mind the tankard idea either. Handy to tie them to you belt loop on duds for summer bbq's, but then, what the heck - most just drink straight from the stubby/can anyway.
Much like Mark A guzzling away and then settling in on some red (wine that is).

Plenty of H2O falling freely up here as well Fortress.

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Thinker- very much liked reading your biography there.
So the Big Artie was the reason ay. Even though he was a Balmain Tiger before Chooks.

I saw the Grand Final at SCG that Saturday afternoon between The Berries (then - now Bulldogs) and The Roosters. Chooks sure was a dynamic team. Goldie Locks Russell Fairfax at No 1 coming from r/union, knew the role well.

Cheers - Good Luck on weekend

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Yay, the Coach is back! Sort of knew you wouldn’t be too far away mate. Like others have said, we miss (need) the agitation (footy) and besides, where’s all the stats on streaks and stuff gonna come from if not from you? I’m definitely too lazy to do it myself so …

Can’t believe I’ve tipped the same as the Boss and the King. Has me slightly mystified. Am I getting the hang of this? Will the men in black suits have to “silence” me because I know too much? Have the Boss and the King made a couple of suspect choices? Aaaaargh! All too much for Newbie to contemplate. I’d rather think about the meaning of life and whether there will be a second coming. Actually the second coming is quite intriguing seeing as Newbie is an atheist. Peace!

OK, enough rambling, another weekend of footy is upon us so let’s get into it …

Cowboys - Given their previous form playing at 1300 Smiles, I give the Doggies a chance in this one. On the other hand, beating the Cowboys on their home turf is no easy job. The Cows go into this game with their best line-up for quite a while I think, so that’s gonna make it tougher as well. Even though the Doggies have won 3 out of the last 4 at 1300 Smiles, I still reckon the Cowboys should get the job done here. Yee-Hah!

Broncos - If the Broncos can do what they did last week, they should be able to get over the top of the Panthers this week. Yes, the Panthers did beat the Eels last week but they had to do it tough. I don’t think there’s enough of a formline in that effort for Newbie to tip them here. I’ll stick with the Broncos.

Raiders - I’m wondering how the Warriors will front up after last week’s disappointment over here in Perth. How much was taken out of them physically and mentally? The Raiders on the other hand won 3 on the trot then had last week off. I’m seeing some of the Raiders boxes getting ticked and will have to give them my “tick of approval” this week. Raiders for me.

Titans - Even though I thought the Eels’ effort last week wasn’t all that bad, I think the Titans’ effort was just a little better. Yes, the Eels have had some trouble off the field but it’s going to take a toll on the players sooner or later and maybe the BOYS won’t have their minds fully on the job this week. I’ll play safe and go the Titans but an Eels win wouldn’t be totally out of the question though.

Storm - I reckon the boys in purple got a bit of a wake up call from those Knights last week and unfortunately my Beautiful Boys have to contend with the consequences of that this week. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we are getting better each week and we were half decent last week against the Sharks. Will it be enough though? Damn! Doctor Smith (from Lost In Space) couldn’t have summed it up better … “oh the pain, the pain”.

Sharks - First versus last. Yeah, the Knights showed some ticker last week but my first comment says it all. Sharks for me.

Tigers - Gee whiz, this is hard. Both will be desperate to win this. Seeing as the Dragons have no Josh (I think) and the Tigers had a rest last week, I’ll plonk it all on the Tigers (sorry Johnny Awesome and welcome to this rather interesting site).

Manly - Gutsy win in crappy conditions last week by Manly (I feel your pain JR). I think I read somewhere that the Bunnies have now lost 6 in a row. I reckon their streak will continue. It still amazes me how bad they’ve become (no, I haven’t forgotten my Beautiful Boys are even worse). Just cannot make a case for Souths here. Manly should win this you would think.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! I’m off to make myself a Chai Latte and vape myself some Razzleberry and Menthol. Cheers.

P.S. What is a picture of a thousand words worth? Hmmm…

LAST ONE ON THE COUCH
Coach, no choice really, can you pencil the Sharks in for me this week? Thanks mate…

Hey BigPeteBx yes Kandos was cement country. Portland cement was owned by blue circle and located in Portland closer to Lithgow and near the Wallerang power station. Lithgow surrounded by coal region. Kandos cement was originally called Australian Portland cement. The name Portland refers to the grade and type of cement produced. Kandos cement was founded in 1914 at the start of World War One. As such Kandos the town was formed. The letter of Kandos is the first letter of the six founding members. It was originally called Candos but the C was changed to a K because the name was already taken in WA. Mate, I have some stories. Did my Fitting and Machining apprenticeship there born and bred in the region, went to school there, and gee you had to grow up tough. Rysltone only 3 mile away away where the crow flies was our sister town. It's got history dating back to the 1800's gold rush and settler period. Think about though. Around 1200 people in Kandos but we got 2 pubs, and RSL club, golf club, two motels, two hotels, and wait for it an Olympic size swimming pool. The era I grew up was tough. There were no precipitators on the cement factory stacks so the whole town was covered in dust. Kandos oval ground in those days was as hard as a 2 dollar steak, So not only did you have to combat the conditions which could also be as cold as an ex wife's heart but you had to play against blokes who were tough and mean. Yep these blokes were ready to beat you senseless on the field then tell the ref aw don't blame me he fell off his horse. After the game battered and bruised it was back to the Kandos pub with no animosity to relive the game. Yep great memories. Cheers Mr A. Sorry for typos, not that glad a taper on phones.

Johnny Awesome,

Regarding the game in the snow in Canberra. I do indeed remember that game.

The Raiders had a Fijian winger - Noa Nadruku - it was the first snow he'd ever seen, and he had to go out and play footy in it. And here it is:

Thanks for the link 'The Thinker' and how good was Noa in his day hey

The Thinker's picture

Actually Johnny Awesome....my memory is clearly failing me.

Nadruku had retired by 2000......I've probably confused him with Lesley Vainikolo (aka The Volcano)......oops!

I am a four year veteran on this site and most people know I live in Auckland and follow (not support haha) the Warriors. Prior to 1995 I supported Eastern Suburbs. I love the game and don't care what teams are playing I just enjoy watching a good game of footy.

Good luck to all!!

Johnny Awesome's picture

Yes I had realised this, but I was being respectful of the chain of command here. I think 1997 was his last stint with the Raiders. He should have retired then me thinks. Cheers Mr A

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi Christine your father had good taste, probably grew up in my era or later. I started following the Dragons in 1969 after getting our first B|W TV set to watch NEIL Armstrong walk on the moon. I still remember sitting around the old HM tv (his masters voice brand). My Dad and Mum who still reside in the same house in Kandos still have that old TV in the shed. Great memories when reflecting on your childhood Christine. Cheers Mr Awesome

The Thinker's picture

Well played Mr Awesome. Well played indeed.

Doggie's picture

Hi all. Been checking out this site for three years now and never posted but seeing afew new names i thought i would introduce myself. Lived in darwin for 26yrs now but originally aSydney boy. Western suburbs, spitting distance from Lidcombe Oval. Grew up watching the likes of Tommy Raudonikas, Les Boyd, John Dorahy, Dallas Donnelly etc. Great Days on the hill. Go for the mighty bulldogs now though. I think i might be the only dogs supporter on hear.

Doggie's picture

Hey Johnny Awesome, know your area well. Did a lot of pig hunting at Sunny Corner, Dark Corner, Newnes etc. Also had a season playing for Oberon. Good part of the world but after so many years in Darwin i woulnt handle the cold now.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Yes Doggie a great part of the country isn't. Sunny and Dark corner are a stones throw away from Bathurst and you can through to Kandos through some other nice Hamlets as well like Cullen Bullen, Ben Bullen, Running Stream and Ilford via Cherry tree hill. For those thinking its a hill, a hill in the country is actually a a very high mountain. Great fruit priduce and walnuts on Cherry Hill. Gee, Newnes huh? I remember the Ol' Newnes pub don't know if it's still there. You can climb down the mountain to get to Glen Davis as well. Cheers Mr Awesome

Sorry meant great country isn't it. Cheers.
