Austrilia will win

mark ashford's picture

Hi all you off season ramblers.
Good to see Coach hasn't lost any passion now the NRL season is over.
Winx's win is the Cox Plate was amazing...what a champion horse.
I don't follow the GG's but that was something else.
Just like some others I was surprised at the Broncs purchase of Benji.
Surely they need some size in the forwards before an end of career half.
I believe he will play mainly for a feeder club and be available when the regular halves are on origin duty.
Anyway Wayne is a crafty bloke who no doubt knows more than we humble posters know.
Over the off season I'm fishing, chasing red claw crayfish, going to the beach, family BBQ's etc.
Give it a go Coach....very therapeutic.
Best wishes to all my fellow posters here.

Marshall was on 600k at the Dragons, turned his nose up at their offer of $300k for 2017. Little did he know he wouldn't get another offer until he pawned himself to the Broncos for $100k.

I guess the Broncs assume $100k is peanuts so who cares if it doesn't pay dividends. What I don't think has been thought through too well is the fact this guy has stunted rather than sparked the attack of the team he has played for in recent years. He has made a great habit of his ineffectual play helping his team concreted to the bottom 8, more often the bottom 4. If the Broncos are happy to pay peanuts to see what happens here, all the fans that don't like Broncos are cheering just as hard.

If Peanuts is what the Broncos think of it, then Good Grief will be their weekly catch cry.

Coach Potato's picture

We bought Mitch Rein ?!!! My god. Broncos you wanna swap for Benji?

Fair dinkum NRL club scouts. If you aren't bloody good enough to keep a contract at the Dragons, that means you're not much chop. Surely.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Nah, It just means the Dragons have found the two books in the cupboard.
Book 1, Show to the NRL
Book 2, NEVER show to the NRL
They must be trying to balance the books. Mitch Rein was one of their more penetrative players last season.

mark ashford's picture

Coach I'd rather have Mitch Rein than Benji.
Don't think you'll see much of Benji in the Broncs "a" side.
Maybe Wayne is trying to see if he has any "Pom" in his ancestry.

Steel Panther's picture

Didn't your mob pick up Trent Merrin from the Dragons last season Coach? He went pretty well didn't he?

Coach Potato's picture

Steel Panther, please argue apples and apples. Merrin didn't leave because he wasn't offered a contract.

He left for more money, while the two we have mentioned were shown the door by the Dragons and had to go somewhere else for much less. My argument about players who arent good enough to stay at the Dragons stands.

Rein isn't 20% of the player Wallace is. Hard to believe that Club bigwigs may think different.

Coach Potato's picture

While the first game Saturday mornibg Australia v Scotland will mean nothing, I mean players who arent good enough for State of Origin will be playing and too good for the Scots - the second game, Sunday morning, England v New Zealand is the actual playoff for a finals spot.
With no semis played (all teams would bloody make it wouldn't they), it means this game may as well be a Prelim final. The winner has to beat Scotland to make it, whike the loser would need to beat Australia.

The Thinker's picture

Great comment there Coach.

I'll be watching both games with interest, but for very different reasons.

Coach Potato's picture

If you think NZ were foxing against Australia last time, and what great sports psychology at work if they were, then $4 to take the title is nice value.

The other thing that can't be discounted is the crowd support. Think about it. Do you think the Poms will be cheering for Australia should Great Britain not be there? Or do you think they be vehemently cheering against them? Yeah, I think so too.

$4 huh.

The Thinker's picture

Coach

When Brisbane hosted the 2008 World Cup final between the Kangaroos and the Kiwis there was a traveling band of English supporters - thousands of them.

They all cheered for the Kiwis like they were their own. I expect they'll do the same at home...but there'll be more of them.

Coach Potato's picture

Like their own huh?

Like it was the Rest Of The World v Australia?
Dontcha think that would be an exhibition event to savour maybe once every couple of years?

A team made up of the best Great Britain, NZ, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and PNG. Let's see if anyone with any push wants to steal my idea.

Doggie's picture

Trouble with that idea Coach is the fact that NZ are ranked 1 in the world so technically it should be Kiwis vs rest of world.

Coach Potato's picture

The US don't always have the top ranked golfer, but that neither stops, nor detracts from the holding of Ryder Cup or President's Cup events now does it?

The best indigenous players in any one year are never the best team ever put together, neither do they claim to be, but they annually challenge the best of the rest in the NRL don't they?

Who said you need to be the best to lay down the challenge.

GaryChesterUK's picture

Hi guys, thought I'd pop in ahead of the 4 nations, I've obviously missed lots of comments over the last couple of months! So i'll get involved with them!

- Super League GF. I (kinda) support Wigan, backed Warrington, not the best of games but enjoyable all the same!

- World Club Series - How come Storm arn't in it? I don't understand.

- Aussies V Rest of the World game. - That would be good, maybe a charity game every couple of years or something.

Now for the 4 nations.

Aussies will probs win it quite easily, I have a sneaking suspicion that England will beat NZ on Saturday and the final will be Aussies v England - All things being well I will be there, only negative is it being at anfield :(

Aussies 32 - England 12

Lets see if i'm right

Coach Potato's picture

# Super League Finals need an overhaul Gary, what about this :
Top 6. Top 2 teams get a week off. Other four teams p!ay for a place in the Prelim eg 3 v 5, 4 v 6. Both top 2 teams guaranteed a home Prelim. Then the Grand Final. Only a three week finals series, but anything's better than a ten week finals series. Where did they get the thought that this would be good for anyone?

# right again Gary. Broncos trip to England at the NRL's expense and at the expense of Storm's playing instead may give you a clue as to how much pull this club has. Others on this page will no doubt disagree 100% but we know who they support.

# Thanks Gary, one vote for the Aussie v World game, one vote against.

# Sam Burgess is the biggest clue as to the English playing ranks. He's been the most out of form forward of 2016. James Graham hasn't done a thing either. Too bad you have to ditch the Brit tag for a month. The combined English /Scottish team aka Great Britain would have been a better chance. England on their own? I think the bloody Scots will give them a test. I think the Aussies are in for a shock. I think they have some key players who don't cope so well with the crowd against them.

# Don't forget the Melbourne Cup Gary. Final field and barrier draw would be out by Saturday breakfast your time.

Doggie's picture

Didnt say i dont support it coach. Would be great concept. On the WCS, i think i read a while back that Storm and Bulldogs didnt want to play. Dont know about Raiders or Panthers though.

Coach Potato's picture

Storm and Bulldogs aren't the Boss. None of the teams are the Boss.

The problem is the NRL who doesn't want to show who is.

Coach Potato's picture

Wouldn't matter if the Bulldogs did wish to go, they weren't good enough.

Did the the Grand Final Runner-up + two Prelim losers all say no before Broncos said we'll go ? I really have to doubt that.

Coach Potato's picture

What did I say Maloney?
15 forward passes through the finals helped Cronulla win the title.
1 forward pass wasn't allowed on the international stage.

Thank God for that.

Coach Potato's picture

How refreshing to see the rules apply.

Coach Potato's picture

Kick em from anywhere in Australia, our James, but the Pommie ball appearing slightly rounder, and he can't even fluke one from the sideline, and only scrapes it in from any closer in.

Coach Potato's picture

Jake Friend , the forward pass.
Didn't thjnk it would cut it on the international stage.

GaryChesterUK's picture

I think the ref tonight (Not a bad ref one of the best over here) Was lenient and allowing Scotland to hold on too long in the tackle, I often think this is the case where the team have no chance of winning.

As easy as Aus liked but still worth watching. I still think England will nick it tomorrow, looking forward to catching it should be a good crowd in.

As for the super league finals, I agree it needs a change of format, not sure how best to do it but your suggestion would be better than what we currently have.

I'm afraid the Melbourne Cup is a bit boring for me! I prefer jumps racing, though we have a course in Chester which is the oldest in country - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zh8JCSeev5k - They have been racing horses there since 1539. A hell of a day out in the summer!!

*Oldest racecourse in the world

The Thinker's picture

Slept in but I've recorded the game. Watching it now pre-Derby Day.

Coach Potato's picture

Bernard Sutton in the video ref box, takes 8 slow mo's to overturn a suspected shoulder charge from the Poms where the contact was from his two hands. The Pommie crowd must be thinking 'who is this idiot?'
The Aussies and Kiwis in the crowd must be replying 'You don't want to know Pom but at least you know his name.'

Coach Potato's picture

Sam Burgess throws one out his ass, a reverse Krygios, to cost his team the game. How fitting.

The guy that looks like Frankenstein, offers a trick on Halloween Eve. The Kiwis confused, they think it is a treat.

Coach Potato's picture

Again refreshing to see the Pommy ref take no rubbish from the NRL players. Isaac Luke pretending he was stripped was rewarded with a simple scrum - lost ball.

The one time he referred one to Bernard Sutton - the easiest of calls took 5 minutes. No doubt they'll think twice of needing a bozo's help next time.

Coach Potato's picture

Still sorting out the pretty colours, Thinker ?

The Thinker's picture

I am....it's a head scratcher this year

Coach Potato's picture

Yes, including about 18 shades of blue.

The Thinker's picture

Given that I am completely baffled by the Melbourne Cup this year, it would be virtually irresponsible of me to compile a thorough form guide.

If, by chance, you still want to know what I think, my ruminations are focusing on the following four horses:

Wicklow Brave
Heartbreak City
Oceanographer
Hartnell

Do with those what you will. Ignoring them completely isn't a bad idea at all. Gamble responsibly.
2nd.

Coach Potato's picture

My Melbourne Cup score-a-tron ratings are in.
Something must have gone screwy somewhere.
It's picking a 125/1 chance on top.
Last year this same ratings chart included the first two across the line from the top 8 in the list, and yours Truly Cool-ly Duely went Hoolie Doolie when the box exacta paid the Moolie, and made everyone Drooly.

Like The Thinker , please take my tips with many grains of salt.

Regardless, I will again box the top 8 in the exacta, and see what 3 1/2 minutes brings.

Personally, I think Grand Marshal and Jameka are the ones going great, and both love the wet.

Super ironically, I have a feeling Oceanographer may prefer dry land.

1 Pentathlon 39.5
2 Grand Marshal 35.5
3 Beautiful Romance 35.5
4 Qewy 34.5
5 Jameka 34.5
6 Big Orange 34
7 Oceanographer 34
8 Gallante 32.5
-------------------------------
9 Heartbreak City 32
10 Almandin 32
11 Secret Number 32
12 Assign 31
13 Hartnell 31
14 Bondi Beach 31
15 Grey Lion 30
16 Wicklow Brave 29
17 Sir John Hawkwood 28
18 Rose Of Virginia 28
19 Exospheric 27
20 Excess Knowledge 26.5
21 Who Shot TheBarman 26
22 Almoonqith 23.5
23 Our Ivanhowe 23
24 Curren Mirotic 19.5

Coach Potato's picture

Man of the Match playing for your country but no doubt he will not leave the bench against the Kiwis next week.

Granted it wasn't Australia's best side, but think about this. There were plenty of first choice players amongst them, Smith and Cronk included, and this guy got Man of the Match over all of them. Logic dictates that you fit him into the backline somewhere. Anywhere. Even a bench warmer would be ok. Sadly backs are not high on the list for interchange selection these days. You would think the Bulldogs Panthers semi this year would have taught selectors far and wide, a lesson. Morris goes off injured but they only have forwards on the bench. One injury to a winger, and they were stuffed. How embarrassing if we see Kangaroo forwards having to replace backs. How embarrassing if Jake Friend is the utility player picked instead. He is hardly the best dummy half, and doubt he could replace a single other position on the field.

GaryChesterUK's picture

Big Orange is a big fancy over here, I like the jockey so i've had a little dabble, hopefully will wake up to some good news!

With regards the 4 nations, WD New Zealand, pretty sure the ozzies ain't too worried though watching that game? The only hope for England is Aus give NZ a good going over then rest a few for the Eng game, they would still be big favs tho!

Coach Potato's picture

Looks like the top8 was no good.

Looks like the next few on the list went ok.
Maybe the dotted line was where I was meant to start.

Coach Potato's picture

Scotland aren't even dignified with a price to beat England.
The first option available is the line at 34.5
Australia couldn't get required 45 in front, so no guarantee England will get 35 ahead.

If you like Scotland for a boil over you can either take the line - which I think is pretty safe, or split a bet between 1-12 ($21) and 13+ ($126).

Remember there was a large period of the game where the Scots outscored the Aussies (35th to 68th minute).

The Thinker's picture

England v Australia for the prize. It's hard to get enthused about the prospects for the Poms....unless Mr Bennett has some golden wizard riding a unicorn up his sleeve.

Coach Potato's picture

Australia only have to lose it would seem to have an English/Australia final.

Not still say the Aussies would throw an International, but I see value in not exactly trying your hardest against the Poms. I'd say they would be the preferred opponent.

The host nation has also never failed to make it to the final, so history is with the Poms winning this week.

Certainly stranger things have happened this week haven't they?

a's picture

Aus will win

Coach Potato's picture

Western Bulldogs $67 at the end of the regular season just four weeks before the Grand Final.

Cronulla as much as $13 through the season.

Donald Trump also $13 at one point.

$100 on this 3 leg multi and you would have been $1.1M better off.

Poms $4 to beat Australia and $12 to win the title huh?
I wonder.

Coach Potato's picture

Yes I must have abnesia too.

There was one Australia (ARL only) v Rest of World game played back in 1997.

Played at Lang Park and Brisbane players not qualified to take part. No wonder it didn't take off.

Surely worth more than a tainted one year trial by angry jury.

Here is 27 minutes of highlights for anyone interested.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Love the Beaver, but now days that try would have been given. No control, but should have been awarded just for the fact that a second rower made the ground and had a dig. Love the Aus team, Joey at 9, Tooves and Fiddler in the halves. Reckon they would give a Smith lead team a fair beating.

Coach Potato's picture

Australia (ARL) v Australia (Super League).

Or Newcastle (ARL) v Broncos (Super League)

Why didn't these ones ever happen?
-No doubt would have involved parties speaking to each other to organise.
-Maybe neither prepared to accept loss.
-Neither group were overly concerned about the fans.
-Maybe A, B, and C.

Coach Potato's picture

Scotland with 38.5 start ar $2 to take line honours for the third time in a row

England to beat Australia at $4.60 and make the final

$9.20 for the pair.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Got to say the cricket is a bit underwhelming, bringing back memories of that Ashes a few years back where we lost 3 by an innings and plenty

Steel Panther's picture

I'm surprised you've brought up the cricket Baggy. Almost as embarrassing as the Kiwis performance against Scotland at the weekend. I see we've undeservedly snuck in to the final thanks to the Kangaroos this morning.
