Regarding the stats on assault rates, you fail to include the report rate, my guess a mere 5%.

The real rate of assault 20 x higher than we ever know.

The victims, not about having trouble remembering the triple-O number, but just too darn scared to speak out, knowing it would be bad news for them if they do.

It's the hidden stats that need to be analysed this time.

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
i actually did mention the under reporting.

As for Inglis, there was no report from his partner and no call to the police from his partner. The Victorian police actually didn't know who he was....all they knew was they had an injured white woman and a young aboriginal man.

Perhaps that goes some way toward explaining why this incident played out like it did.

OK, Todd did a good job replying honestly to the Boss's email, Todd did a exceptional job of dealing with the alleged Eel's digressions, and Todd has in my eyes done a pretty good job last season with the exception of kicking the bunker staff out the door for lousy performances, and getting a ref's boss with a pair that clank.

TODD IT'S TIME TO STEP UP AGAIN AND AUDIT EVERY SINGLE TEAM AND EVERY SINGLE PAYMENT AFTER THIS LAST ADMISSION FROM THE BULLDOGS!

The fact that a breech of $100000 has been self reported by the Bulldogs is proof that no team, no manager and no board (The BOYS are the one exception ;P) have the self control to work within the frame work of the rules. It is time that we take that power off them, allow the coach to recruit who he wants, but all salary cap budgets are held by the NRL. No third party's, no bonus's, no houses, no boats, no dodgy invoices being paid into the wrong account. This would still allow clubs to buy talent, build for the future, whatever Wayne's plan with Benji is, but it will allow the supporters of the Knights to know they are competing on a level playing field with the Sharks. Todd the time has come to show that you understand that the game is bigger than the 16 CEO's that want more control to do it their way, by their rules. It is still the peoples game and the fans deserve to know that justice will be served to all clubs the break the rules. Big hammer time Todd.

Coach Potato's picture

I take your point Thinker, but it just cant get it out my head, only a few years ago, Inglis approaches the ref in defence of one his players who lashed out at one of the opposition. "Cmon sir, it was just a bitch-slap".

Throw away line, or a tell tale signs all those years ago he was guilty as all hell.

Coach Potato's picture

#Yes under reporting. Got it.
Speed reading pitfall.

# Baggt, the salary cap would be far easier for both players and clubs to manage if it was negotiated as a percentage rather than a dollar figure.

100% of the cap is 100% right?
Each player and his agent would negotiate not primarily for X amount of dollars, but for X percentage of the salary cap.

A marquee player might be able to negotiate maybe 8 - 10% of the cap. Lesser players, a lesser percentage 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5% .... you get the idea. Anyway, it all just needs to add up to 100% or less.. Club might run on 100% of their cap or a lesser percentage and so have a little money in the salary cap bank for a rainy day.

At no time, though will a club be allowed to run at above 100% of the cap. If players were required to register their % with the NRL, it would be all transparently clear.

Essentially, when players argue for more dollars, they are, in fact arguing for a percentage o the cap, but if it was literally managed in percentage terms, it would make it easier for everyone.

Who would listen to me though? Should I write a letter to Todd and change my name to Thinker&Son ?

Ingles is not guilty

Before you go throwing good money after bad on Penrith for 2017 let me jog the goldfish memory of some.

2014 Made the Prelim and only then went down by 6 points. 6 points from a Grand Final.

,2015 Round 26 15th placed Penrith played 16th placed Newcastle and a win for either team would have given the spoon to the other. Newcastle led by 4 at the 45 minute mark. Panthers got home but that was 35 minutes from the Wooden Spoon.

2016 Made finals week 2 in yet another horrible finals refereeing performance. An equal share of the calls and they were half a chance. The Viking Clap used unsuccessfully to put off Cleary before his sideline conversions, the worst thing I've seen from a Rugby League crowd. Still, to get to the Grand Final, needed to win his game then beat the Storm in Melbourne.

Almost a Grand Final to almost the wooden spoon, then back to the finals.

2017 your guess is as good as mine. Only difference is I hope they stay in the finals hunt another yea and lots of footy fans out there hope not.

Well of tackle zero is right they will lose to Raiders

The Thinker's picture

Off topic, but as we reach the end of the year I was thinking about the sporting highlights for 2016. I think I can come up with three that will stand up as the sort of things we may not see again for the rest of our lives....so that makes them pretty special. In all three cases these are the culmination of a sporting record over a career or a season rather than a sporting moment, but they are all pretty darn astonishing.

In no particular order:

* Leicester City - EPL season 2015/16. In this era this sort of thing just isn't meant to happen...and I still can't quite understand how it did. Not only did they win, but they lost just three games all season. Never again.

* Usain Bolt - the triple triple. We thought he might do it. Almost all of us hoped he might do it. He did it...and he did it easily. That's gold for the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay in three successive Olympics. Never again.

* Michael Phelps - 23 Olympic gold medals. Just to put this tally in perspective, there are five athletes tied for second place on the all time list for gold medals - and they are all sitting on nine (for the trivia buffs those five are Latynina, Nurmi, Spitz, Lewis and Bolt). So his total is way more than double the tallies of some of the greatest athletes in history. Never again.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Just on the QRL thing. The QRL is worried about grass roots RL but the 2 power clubs in QLD have endorsed the motion to get rid of John. It's a case of the right hand having no clue or influence over the left hand.

Coach Potato's picture

Queensland Rugby League are deeply interested in Country NSW. In particular, the region starting just south of Forster and stretching all the way up to the border. It's team is the East Coast Dolphins. Because it's region starts from the Tweed downwards, it's proximity to Gold Coast and Brisbane lends itself massively to be the stomping ground of Broncos and Titans talent scouts. More money offered to Country NSW would naturally include more money for the East Coast Dolphin region.

Greg Inglis has long convinced the QRL, that theres something in the Nambucca River that runs through Macksville. Anything special that might come out of the area in the future, they want their grimy hands on.

So maybe you're catching on now.
Make sure the kids first graded footy is in Queensland and in doing so artificially create eligibility for future State of Origins.

Like I summed up a few posts back.

Mind your own (f-ing) business QRL.

Coach pototo all your ravings about penrith make me laugh head down to the big leagues club and look into your trophy cabinet lot of dust in there get royce simmons to clean it up instead of retelling the story of his grand final try.

Coach Potato's picture

Really?

Runners up Medals count as silverware up Brisbane way?
We won in 2003, and you won in 2006.

There's not a whole lot of difference between cabinets gathering dust.

Glad to hear you still post and can still be so easily made look the fool.

Come...on....

Surely there is a conflict of interest when 14 clubs speak out against club funding, while the two that don't are NRL owned Gold Coast, and NRL currently the financial caretaker of Newcastle.

Surely these two clubs are not voicing their own opinion, but rather only and always only that of the NRL itself, and surely... that... is a conflict of interest.

Coach Potato's picture

When untold secrets tell the story.

In the attached article is this sentence in reference to 14 clubs taking a stand against the NRLs stalling tactics on funding.
"...The Knights and Titans did so because they are owned and funded by the NRL. Nobody knows why Queensland did....."

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/nrl/teams/john-grant-to-stay-arl-com...

Queensland, meaning, the rest of Queensland - which more pointedly is just the Broncos, the Cowboys, and the Maroons.

So it's clear and no argument , Gold Coast and Newcastle, not to mention the Referees Association are in a bedful of conflict of interest with the NRL, since they all bloody "are" the NRL.

So has the rest of Queensland made deals , demands or ultimatums to the NRL/Refs Assoc. to save John Grant? It's only a question borne from logical deduction. The safest assumption one could reasonably come to is, yes.

ICAC please come and help sort these millions of questions.

Hi guys , it looks like nothing has changed on this website , have a great Christmas everyone & a happy new year , don't do anything I wouldn't do & for those who can't be good be good at it & may the football gods be good to all of us in 2017 , most of all spare a thought for the people out there that aren't so fortunate as all of us ... can't wait for nines .

Greetings football fans

Not too many of us are hanging around the locker rooms at this time of the year, but for those of you that are I hope you enjoy the silly season with whomever you choose to be silly with.

Stay safe, have fun and try to stay back the full metres.

All the best

MERRY CHRISTMAS to all.

Regardless of which religion you follow, or don't follow, the fact remains that this is what it's called.

Does Ramadan require it's name to be changed by non-Muslims?
Not that I know of. As far as I am aware, non-Muslims totally respect the fact that Muslims celebrate their Ramadan. Why doesn't it seem to work both ways?

Former roosters player in a bad situation who couldn't keep out of trouble on Christmas day , have a safe new year to you Thinker & your family as well as TLH ...

Coach Potato's picture

Jobs in sports journalism, these days, dont neccesarily require any knowledge of the game and it's players.

John Tobin, being tabloid headlined as a former NRL player, is so ridiculously and laughably false. He played his last game for the Roosters in 1987.

A National competition - the NRL, was not born until 1998.

Please, nameless sports journo from Channel 7, tell us all how this guy was a former NRL player. We will obligingly roll around on the ground laughing at whatever you come up with.

I also suggest you scrub up and stop embarrassing yourself.

Hello ALL at The Thinker site and Off-Season Ramblings blogs.

Best wishes to you all for 2017 and may it be a much kinder year to you, your family and friends.

I do hope you all had an enjoyable festive season. When we place retail aside - Christmas is a nice time of the year to be around family and friends or just a few nice cold ones to appreciate a good brew or whats brewing.

NRL isn't too far off and I can assure you that I am taking in lots of A-League and EPL at the moment. Sydney FC is having a good run leading the competition to date. I wont say how well they are going, as I don't wish to spoil their standing.

I was in Sydney back in November to see Julio Iglesias Concert and he still goes well for 73. If none of you have ever been out to NRL Central at Moore Park - go there and have a look at the museum they have.
I was shown around SCG when visiting a close rel and passed by (walked) NRL Central and decided to see what makes this place tick. Wow an excellent display, trophies galore even The Amco Cup sits there proudly.

Thinker, Coach and all my very close friends, enjoy the rest and keep up the great work you have all done to keep the site so highly rated.

If the Summer's heat has been too much for you, I do sympathise with you.

Cheers, be good, keep well and keep kickin - Big Pete

Fittler - Origin legend - age @ debut 19
Inglis - Origin legend - age @ debut 19
Even yourself, Laurie Daley - Origin legend, you were age 19.

Why is Nathan Cleary, age 19, not ready?

Think of which State team dominated when the above joined their respective teams. Coincidence or Not? I'm a vote for Not.

Imagine if selectors had said Fittler, Inglis, and yourself had not been ready?

All were to given a chance, and good enough to take it.

None required to wait in a queue like young public servants looking for a promotion over older ones.

Give Cleary a chance.
He will take it with both hands. Both feet even.

He is 19.

The Thinker's picture

Morning Coach....Happy New Year.

He looks ready. I imagine he would handle the occasion because he's pretty darn composed....and his Dad has always been a very composed chap.

One thing I will mention (because I like arguing with you) is that Fittler, Inglis and Daley weren't playmakers when they debuted for NSW. There is a lot more pressure on playmakers, particularly NSW playmakers, because they do like swapping them in and out like laundry.

Inglis debuted on a wing. Daley was in the centres. Fittler was on the bench. I think he did slot into the 6 in one of his early Origins but he was usually in the centres.

All three are (at least) modern day greats of the game and (probably) near enough to all-time greats. So you are putting Cleary in a pretty solid group there.

Is he up to that class? I think he could be. I hope so.

Coach Potato's picture

Put your house on NSW giving Pearce yet another chance to proof himself not good enough. The selectors aren't losing their jobs as far as I know, and these old men of the game don't become bold, forward-thinkers overnight.

a's picture

Yeah Perace could be playing orgin

Coach Potato's picture

Just thinking back Thinker, weren't they also putting Fittler, Daley, and Inglis amongst a pretty solid group at a stage where they hadn't yet proven themselves. Daley had made a Grand Final the previous year, but both Fittler and Inglis would only play a Grand Final 3 months after their Origin debuts and so who was to know that? Who's to say Origin didn't set them on track for October? Maybe Mr Hindsight knew.

Roberts went to the Broncos and lost his too.
Now Marshall is off to the Broncos to "find" his spark?
Hardly seems the place does it?

So many similarities Mundine and Krygios.
Both have all the moves and the swaggers and oversized mouthpieces, but not that much fight.
Pretty ironic for the one that's a boxer.
