Round seven selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Note the 4pm kick-off on Good Friday folks – this game has a habit of sneaking up on me (and starting without me...rude). Both sides head into this game off the back of last round victories, although the strength of the opposition is questionable in both cases. In some ways these two clubs have similar issues – both have big forward packs but lack the creative playmakers to capitalise. Adam Reynolds has a very reliable kicking game but it's almost too reliable – there's not a lot of X factor in his play. While they got the win against an under-strength Panthers they only just got there. All too often they seemed hellbent on going around the Panthers. Now perhaps they were playing to a game plan, and they did win, but a repeat of that style is just too predictable to get past the Bulldogs. Cody Walker though, did show some flourishes so perhaps the Bunnies have a work in progress there. Having criticised the team in the red and the green the Bulldogs attack doesn't have me salivating either. All the interest (for me) lies in the battle of the forwards. The winner on that front wins the game, and I do lke that Bulldogs engine room. The other Reynolds (Josh) to score the match-winner.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 6

Result – Bulldogs 24 defeated Rabbitohs 9

Newcastle Knights vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Knights continue to compete but winning seems a bridge too far. Their only win this year was against the Titans when just about everything went wrong for their opponent. Plenty went wrong for the Chooks in round five – their defence was barely there against the Broncos, but you would expect their coaching staff to focus us on that in the lead up to this clash. There's certainly nothing wrong with the Roosters attack, so that should click into gear at some point during the 80 minutes. My gut feel – a low scoring first half and the tricolours class with the ball to shine brightly in the last quarter of the game.

Verdict – Roosters by 14

Result – Roosters 24 defeated Knights 6

Brisbane Broncos vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

I'm having one bet this weekend, and it's a slightly unusual one – I'm backing the Titans with a 16.5 point start at $1.53. While I expect the Broncos to prevail I've a sneaky feeling the Titans are going to pull a competitive effort out of their collective rear ends on Good Friday. Peats and McQueen are back for the Titans, and there's a few ex-Broncos in that Titans line-up (Taylor, Copley and Wallace) who will give their all. The Broncos are without Ben Hunt, and I'm not entirely convinced that the Broncos playmaking duo of Milford and Nikorima will work. I have to go with the Broncos on class alone, but don't let me talk you out of tipping an upset here.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Broncos 24 defeated Titans 22

Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland

Unfortunately for the Sea Eagles the Storm don't lose two games in a row very often. The last time that happened was in 2015 in rounds 14 and 15 during the Origin period of the season. Note that Munster and Bromwich (Jesse) have been named on an extended bench but it would be a surprise if either are playing this weekend. The Storm played in atrocious conditions in their round five loss and if there's one team you don't want to face in the wet it's the Sharks. They'll be back near their best this weekend. The Sea Eagles were surprisingly awful against the Dragons. Let's hope that was a one-off rather than an indication of where their season is heading. Both sides take to this game with under-strength forward packs but Bellamy will give the purple forwards a simple game plan and the best brains in the business will win the game from there..

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 30 defeated Sea Eagles 26

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

While most of the teams I had pencilled in for greatness in 2017 are letting me down, the Raiders are starting to look like the side we all hoped they could be. Competitive losses against the better sides and dominant victories over the poorer sides sees them sitting on the cusp of the top four. Meanwhile the Warriors are on the cusp of the top eight after successive victories at Mt Smart. Their challenge now, as it always has been, is to win a game in Australia. They haven't done that in season 2017 thus far, and I'm not enthused about them breaking their duck in Canberra.

Verdict – Raiders by 10

Result – Raiders 20 defeated Warriors 8

St George Illawarra Dragons vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – WIN Stadium

Few if any would have thought the Dragons would be on the top of the NRL ladder at any point this season. Five wins from six starts and a very healthy points differential – this is a side that is putting opponents to the sword. To think their coach was expected to come under a ton of scrutiny this season but the critics have put their mouths in their pockets for now. There's no reason to doubt them this weekend either – playing at home against a team without their co-captains and their first-choice fullback and hooker. It's hard to measure how much Thurston is worth to the fortunes of the Cowboys but the short answer is 'heaps'. The Dragons have racked up 89 points in the last three rounds while conceding just 28, and they've done that against teams that have been beating other teams. I'm expecting more of the same.

Verdict – Dragons by 16

Result – Dragons 28 defeated Cowboys 22

Penrith Panthers vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Pepper Stadium

In round five the Storm beat the Panthers 28-6. In round six the Sharks beat the Storm in Melbourne 11-2. In round seven the Sharks face the Panthers, and the Panthers are the favourites. Granted the Panthers have most of their first grade squad returning on Sunday afternoon, but are we to assume they can just turn on a good performance like a tap? We haven't seen much of that thus far. The Panthers haven't beaten a good side yet this year and the Sharks are heading west with their best seventeen. To borrow a phrase from the great Phil Gould (before he starts borrowing some of mine) – what am I missing here?

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 28 defeated Panthers 2

Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

Here's another game where I feel like the market has it wrong. The Eels have lost four games in a row and, to be frank, haven't looked like winning. The Tigers competed well against the Storm two weeks ago and then followed that up under the new coach with a surprise victory over the Cowboys in Townsville. Those two performances tell me the effort is there. Mitchell Moses gets to prove he is serious about putting in for the Tigers this season against his next club. Even if Tedesco and Woods are going somewhere else they'd want to show their next club how good they are. And given the neutral venue the Eels don't even get any home ground advantage. I'm wrong occasionally and I'll probably be wrong here too, but the Tigers for me in what is apparently an upset.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result – Eels 26 defeated Tigers 22

Wally Lewis - round seven selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • BULLDOGS vs Rabbitohs
  • Knights vs ROOSTERS
  • BRONCOS vs Titans
  • Sea Eagles vs STORM
  • RAIDERS vs Warriors
  • DRAGONS vs Cowboys
  • PANTHERS vs Sharks
  • EELS vs Tigers

Your only bet for the round is looking good at half time Thinker.
Well done again.

Fortress's picture

Like sands in the hour glass so are the days of our lives seriously who ever wants to stay then stay who ever wants to go then go no player is bigger than footy no person is bigger than the thinker site.

Life goes on everyone !!!!!!!!!

Hope the easter bunny has been kind to you all .

Cheers from fortress eagle!!!!!!

Tailspin's picture

Hey, coach. I am not on here all the time, got a life and kids, but I will banter with you, just for shits and giggles.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Not sure where my comment disapeared? Just agreeing with Christine regarding the loyalty factor and uselessness of contracts. Up until now Coaches would deal behind the scenes but not openly admit the targeting of players with contracts, but Nathan Brown has been open enough unlike others to admit contracts now didn't mean much as Christine said earlier on. Excerpt from NRL........However, Brown insists he can still convince a high-profile player to fast-track the club's rebuilding stage, and suggested their next target may not even be off-contract this year.Just because the player's on contract doesn't really mean a great deal today," Brown said following the Knights' loss to the Sydney Roosters on Friday.
Cheers all from Mr Awesome

Happy Easter Coach,

It's obviously up to you if you want to stay or go, but you have brought much of the attention that has come your way on yourself.

You've been quite happy to have a go at almost everyone here, including me, dozens of times. You have also said many times that it's just banter and you expect people to come back and have a go at you in return. Now you're asking me to pull people up for doing it.

You haven't made this any easier...for you, or for me.

As for the F word...I've explained why I'd rather not see it here. There's plenty of ways you can say what you want to say without using it. I use 'freakin' all the freakin time.

If someone invited me to dinner at their place and I was sitting there swearing my head off and they asked me not to swear what do I do? Do I keep on swearing? Do I get up and leave?

And while one magistrate may have deemed it okay, swearing in public is still against the law in most states of Australia, including the three that have NRL teams.

Most online newspapers in this country wouldn't publish comments from readers with swearing in it. Most callback radio stations won't cop it either. If you find that unacceptable you are welcome to start your own footy tipping website, newspaper or radio station and swear as much as you like. But if you do, you will be the one paying the bills to keep it going, and you'll be the one spending your Easter weekend dealing with people who aren't happy with the way you are doing things.

I'm heading off to catch a fish with the kids...try not to kill each other before I get back,

pabdul's picture

i like giving it to people but i down like swearing it changes my opinion of them straight away. i dont like it when i see f@#k coz u still read it as a swear word in your head.its like a no nudity sign and a person is wearing see thru clothing they'll get away with it but will still offend the majority

Coach Potato's picture

Thanks for the time taken out from fishing to write the several paragraphs. Feels like the only inkling that my contributions over the last few years were worth anything at all to this page.

Even up until yesterday I was still allowed to be called an arsehole, yet all along it's not been my go to attack the person at the other end, (only the words they use). Calling someone a hypocrite, refers only to the words people use, nothing else. Strangely fortress's slagging off at Baggy is still fine, so who knows what the go is anymore.

Here is where the hypocrisy has been laying, and will have to lie dormant.

Thanks everyone.
Hope you liked the stats, my different views on the game, things you may not have otherwise thought about. There's plenty more to share, but only stuff that you'll now never see.

Signing off.
The Coach.

pabdul's picture

a hypocrite is the person saying the words like a liar is the one lying. i agree with u regarding fortress (soon to be tin shed if manly loses at home again) but baggy just laughs it off and i respect that.

christine's picture

Close the door behind you .

The Thinker's picture

Coach,

You demanded an apology from a contributor for pointing out the entirely accurate fact that Benny Elias was born in Lebanon. You carried on like this person committed a war crime when all he did was state a plain fact. You got on here and called this person a racist...on absolutely no grounds. Your entire argument for claiming this fell over in about three seconds but it never occurred to you to apologise or take it back. Has this contributor been here recently. No, he hasn't.

You had a go at Chooks who has been here for years and never given anyone any grief. All he did was offer a suggestion regarding the rules of the game and you treated him like an idiot. Is Chooks still putting his tips in? No, he's not.

There are many others that have emailed me asking me to punt you altogether...and I haven't. I've actually supported you here, even though there are plenty of occassions where you have had a go at me. For everyone that emails me, there are hundreds that don't. They just leave.

Website traffic to this website is down since you started all your little battles with everybody. Whatever income I get from running this website barely covers the cost of running this website. The prizes come out of my own pocket.

Your presence here costs me time, money and grief. Do you ever ask yourself why everyone singles you out? They don't know you, so it can only be based on your contributions to the site. Your contributions annoy people, hundreds of people, and you sign off like your leaving this site poorer for your departure,

Good bye.

Thinker Go & enjoy your easter fishing break with your family , you've earnt it & deserve it happy easter & happy easter to TLH for all he does on this site to keep it going for all of us to ...

Goodbye coach you were off side too much thinker has benched you.

The Thinker's picture

I'll pay that one Rocket.

Happy Easter Christine.

christine's picture

Rocket ryan You should follow the Thinkers tips he is doing better than me this year not a jibberas like coach who lets face it is a stats man ( he's probably a bloody accountant ) ...

a's picture

Heck Rocket Ryan even Im doing better than a jibberas like Coach

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Mark A - FullBull knows the locations.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Chooky - it doesn't look good in reading and when hearing it used about, we just tend to know its language, but of the not nice type.

I bet your favourite after shave is FCUK.
NO Pabdul, it has no inference to the "f" word either. Its just the way it looks and the way some decipher it.

FYI - I think it has something to do with French Connection UK.
It's Pommy a/shave and not of The Bazza McKenzie type.

Enjoy your Easter, where chickens once sat atop of easter eggs.

christine's picture

Now coach has gone can we try one last time to get Johnny Ray back on board & the joker & chooks & anyone else we have lost from the site please Thinker or TLH ???

a's picture

Yes we also we to get the Guru back on to

BigPeteBx's picture

Lately in NRL Rocket, tipping can be a matter of all over the shop/ballpark. Teams are so unpredictable.

Never fear, Coach knew what he did, was good and was opening up new avenues or subject titles to us. A bit of trivia as we went along on the journey. Very Panthers and NSW Blue ruled.
I know he hated Manly, he gave me a serve early in the peace, like a few here that I know have spelt it out, on occasions.
Hardly did I read the word disliked. But credit where credit is due, to all teams - I feel.

I'm sure Coach will get over what has taken place as for 7 - 10 days there, I thought he may have been suffering calicivirus of the four-legged nature. Panthers are running on cold lately and sure needed some injections.

Coach doesn't need to leave the site, we just need to be wary of what we write and that it doesn't offend. Even my team-mate Fortress will heed that and I know he will re-read his jottings, before he saves, because that way, we really digest what we write, when it is often off the cuff.

Keep well all you Thinker bloggers and enjoy the fishing Thinker.
I thought you might have done that for Good Friday and netted a motza of fish and then walked on water.

christine's picture

The Thinker can look at doing stats if the Thinker or Tlh has time to but I understand they may not have the time to do so we will leave it up to them .

pabdul's picture

big pete i promise to reply to your msg once i get it decoded.
by the way manlys left edge is woeful today

Christine 's picture

Padbul the only person that's a hypocrite is the person calling someone else a hypocrite .

a's picture

And I think we all know who that is

Fortress's picture

What a magnificent game of footy that's why I go for the mighty eagles we were gone but we fought back and could of won.

Well done to the storm who many believe are the favourites to take the comp but the eagles came back and we nearly won a classic game.

Thats why many believe this is the greatest rivalry in the modern. Era another great contest.

We will be in the semi finals this year a young side doing great things.

Proud of the boys for never giving up great things ahead.

Hope all u manly haters watched the game it was a ripper to the end.

Go the might sea eaglessssssss

a's picture

I'm 4 from 4 if the Thinker submits my tips

Fortress's picture

Just want to say well done to the thinker its the right decision we don't have to love one other but resoect .

The comment levelled at Benny Elias was nothing short of a disgrace and I for one am glad now his gone nothing but trouble and poor Christine copped most of it.

Yes he had his supporters on here but I wonder those who did support him were just feeding him what he loved.

Life goes on folks a great site and the footy will live to fight another day so to the thinker site!!!!!!!!

pabdul's picture

could of won
nearly won
didnt win

christine's picture

Fortress & Pig Pete bx so close but sorry for your loss guys, hope you enjoy the rest of your easter ...

a's picture

I couldn't agree more with you Fortress and what he did to Chooks was also awful disrespecting his opinion and also he was awful to Christine just because she had a disability doesn't mean he had to pick on her and he had said some mean things to me why did I ever try to keep Coach on the site because how he thank Christine when she keep him on the site but he treated Christine like garbage so I glad Coach is gone and hopefully we get Johnny Ray Guru Joker Chooks back

christine's picture

To all the regulars on this site & visit this site I hope you all have a happy easter no matter were you are & I too am 4 from 4 ...

pabdul's picture

fortress that was brilliant getting in before the haters to make out it was ok to lose to what u believe is the greatest rivalry.
the dagger would be twisting in your heart the pain unbearable right now coz your a true supporter. meanwhile i need to get back to moonwalking in the aisles.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Dam its a good job i have learned not to peak early its just a matter of timing my run umm
Could be 1 and 3 only for the broncs

a's picture

I'm 5 from 5 but I tipped against Cowboys I don't think I want to be 6 from 6

Fortress's picture

Padpul its never OK to lose biddy but when ur team never gives up keeps going to thevend then its just as great of course I wanted us to win but the storm are not a dunce team picked by many to win the comp and to be down 18_0 and cone back and almost win well I'm proud of them a true supporter would think the same way as me padpul don't worry we will be there the talent and potenial is emmence won't be long when the mighty eagles are holding the trophy aloft this year next year were coming to get it .

Big Pete great comeback by the boys got to be proud they really gave them a heart attack.

Christine keep smiling OK .

Thanks "a" good luck to your side going your side in upset the players comming in will want to prove a point.

Enjoy ur easter and the footy everyone .

From the one and only fortress eagle of the mighty sea eaglesssss

pabdul's picture

well fortress i admire your passion. your team is a bit like your spelling it can improve but still makes a valid statement

christine's picture

I hate when storm play they are ( sorry mark ) so finally drilled it's the same routine week in week out I find watching storm play boring I loose interest during their games when they play & they do get away with things other teams wouldn't & so do roosters , those two teams are a protected species I did see an eels v storm game at pirteck not live but eels were just about to get awarded a penalty & billy slater who is not captain went over to the ref & had a quiet word with him then got awarded the penalty instead & the penalty clearly should of gone to eels not storm , storm make up their own rules to suit themselves ...

Fortress's picture

So coach couldn't help himself having a dig at me to help his old mate baggy pants,if we all go back to past posts it was baggy pants who started to slag me and my team out so coach reckons that's OK.

Coach if ur still reading on the site u are a first rate drip a trouble maker u never owned this site and quite frankly I'm glsd to see the end of you so are many others its funny what cama can do u have no respect for Christine you have always given me a hard time due to hatred of manly so now I will say.......its time to go coach
R.I.P

If someone wants to bag out my club or me than they should expect it back I just wanna talk footy so if baggy pants wants to join coach on the sidelines then what a wonderful world it would be.

Big Pete I will contact thinker and give u my personal e_mail mate.

Cheers everyone!!!!!!!

'a' we will be proud of the way the Cowboys came back tonight from 28 - 4 at half time, to be beaten 28-22 at the final call when you consider the number of great players that are missing through injury. Good on you Cowboys!
Hope all are enjoying your Easter break.

Yes I am sure am Mary S I think we should be able to beat the Knights next week

Thanks Thinker for putting my tips in

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hello Mr Thinker, your last comment was certainly an eye opener. It's easy for people to come on and not realise the amount of work it takes to run a site, the expense involved as well and you do it well Mr Thinker. I guess the magority of folk like myself work to live with the lucky few living to work so for me it's a diversion from my life. I love footy, grew up playing it in the central west so an outlet like this is appreciated Mr Thinker. In footy, what happened on the field stayed on the field back in my day, sadly that didn't occur here because of a persons stubborness. I tried earlier on to placate the angst by lightening things up. I never believe in taking sides, when that happens, walls are built. Instead by showing an open door, always leaves a place of sanctuary which you did Mr Thinker. Your final comment Mr Thinker has put it all to bed and it should be a reality check for others, cheers mate. I got attracted to this site by your Bio Mr Thinker, you've got old school humour with modern day thinking. I hope this site gets the success your efforts and smarts deserve. Cheers from Mr Awesome

tigerholic's picture

Morning Folks
I joined this site a few years back and I was attracted to all of the football talk and the tips from everyone, since then things changed a bit and little wars broke out between a few regulars and some of the new comers, some of the arguments were fun and some were not.
I remain a true believer in this site because I love my footie, I am honest in that I don't like Queensland, Manly, Brisbane, Cowboys, Melbourne and the number one grub "Cameron Smith", I respect the views of all that post and I hope that those of us that remain on this site can remain civil but passionate, even though I have feelings they are way below the surface and normally can't be reached.

As far as Coach goes, your stats were interesting, your Last Man Standing Comp was good, your posts were plentiful and sometimes too much, but in respect for Thinker and this site and the rest of the tipsters and viewers both young and old, the Thinker has not needed to refer to the "Bunker" Coach, you have stepped in to touch once too often, you have been banned, take care Coach.

Thinker, I respect the decision that you made, I love your site and I will abide by the rules.

Happy Easter

tigerholic's picture

Fortress
Your boys almost pulled off a remarkable comeback, you must be happy with the way they never gave up and I agree with you that they will be in the semis this year for sure.
I can't wait to see the Trbojevic brothers in NSW jumpers, they will be fantastic.
"a", you were oh so close as well, your boys were outstanding in a game that everyone expected the Dragons to win easily.

Well done to everyone who has 6/6 so far this week, looks like the perfect round will go off, Happy Easter to all.

Cheers

pabdul's picture

its funny how people see things different. they were good comebacks but not remarkable as they failed to reach
their goals. i thought it was more remarkable how the storm and dragons held on for a win.

Smithy0591's picture

So I don't tip here but I do tip at my local and put a small wager on each week. Its about the only gambling I do.

This week I changed my mind and had bulldogs, roosters, broncos and storm to win by 7-12..... FFFFFFFFFFFUUU....!!!!!!

So if sharkys and tigers get up im going to be absolutely spewing as that would have been 8/8 for me.

Happy easter trendsetters.

christine's picture

Mark You've gone quiet since coaches departure , what's going on ?

a's picture

Yes tigerholic we did pretty good

PS I found this when I was looking for Wally tips I found it In 2012 I glad it became popular over the years yes there were wars but what Coach did was too much his comments were over the top so I hope him leaving was for the better and I think it was

BigPeteBx's picture

Pabdul - I saw the early score and said what on earth............, then had to out and saw final score when I returned and thought, at least they know how to comeback.
I doubt you would call the fortress - tin shed, on that performance. Because The Storm might have been considered a "light shower" in the second half, going by that final margin.
Keep well and enjoy Easter Day.

BigPeteBx's picture

Morning Fortress - hope u r enjoying yr Sunday mate.
It is a good sign for them to come back like that. Though it doesn't always happen like that. Good signs to come when finals come about. Many wont include Manly in their 6 and some their 8.

But if we can escape injuries and deduct what SoO might bring, then the young'ens might just surprise themselves.
I don't have Foxtel or PAY, so rely on progress scores, as the come to hand or Live Scores where I view.

Cheers and enjoy your Easter Sunday
Big Pete
